Member’s Forum: (In-Person) – Photographing the American Trackside with Suzy McIntire

Bio:
Suzy McIntire joined NVPS in 2019, and is club secretary for 2026-27. She shoots primarily with a Fuji X-T5, and loves her 17-40mm f/1.8 Sigma lens. Suzy enjoys street photography— capturing little-noticed moments in everyday life and the humor that sometimes comes with it. She’s also partial to human-created vernacular landscapes. For several years she has been photographing from moving vehicles, usually trains, as a way of finding otherwise-inaccessible scenery and higher vantage points, always to discover what people are doing in their particular worlds.
In her presentation, Suzy will show landscape photos of the U.S. taken from 18 different Amtrak trains (such as the Empire Builder, Sunset Limited, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Floridian, and Southwest Chief) through 35 states, and answer questions about shooting from moving vehicles. She’ll display a silicone lens hood for keeping reflections off the window glass, and describe how to deal with dirty windows and motion blur. And, of course, there will be a few photos of trains and everyone can ask about long-distance train travel!
Description of the Presentation: Photographing the American Trackside
“You can still see the iconic American landscape from the train,” Suzy says, “fantastic agricultural scenes in particular. But much of the trackside is marvelously decayed, slow to change, and regional.” She finds it a more interesting, less-homogenized America.
