June 18th-19th, 2011 - Field Trip: Big Meadows - Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah National Park - Big Meadows June 18-19, 2011 Big Meadows is a section of Shanandoah National Park containing a lodge, campground, eating facilities, a visitor center, hiking trails, waterfalls, and usually deer with fawns this time of year. You can capture many images in one day, but if you want to be sure you are out and ready early in the morning, information for staying overnight is avaiable below. TENTATIVE AGENDA FOR SHENAHDOAH NATIONAL PARK FIELD TRIP Saturday - June 18 6:00 AM - Meet at The Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows (between Mile Markers 51 and 52). Plan to use your longer lens to capture images of the fawns that frequent the area. If you would rather shoot sunrises, you might want to go to the Old Rag Overlook between Mile Markers 46-47. Although you will not be with our group, but there are great sunrise shots on the eastern side of Skyline Drive as you enter the park, starting at Hazel Mountain Overlook, Mile Marker 33. Breakfast and Lunch are on your own. There is food avaiable at the Wayside Resturant (next to the gas station) in Big Meadows. 1:00 PM - Meet again at the Byrd Visitor Center or drive your car and meet the group at Fishers Gap Parking Lot, Mile Marker 49.4 (look for sign saying "Rose River Loop/Dark Hallow Falls") by 1:15 PM. We will walk down the Rose River fire road and proceed to Dark Hollow Falls. (This hike is less than 2 miles). 5:30 PM - Dinner at Spottswood Dining Room. If you wish to eat with the group, meet in the lobby of the resturant by 5:20 PM. It will be first-come, first-served, as they do not take reservations. 7:00 PM - Meet at the Visitor Center to wait for fawns and watch and shoot the sunset from Tanner's Ridge Overlook (just south of the Visitor Center on the right side). Other good spots to veiw sunsets are: Black Rock Summit (the trail is from the Big Meadows Parking Lot, close to the cabins) Naked Creek Overlook (at approximately Mile Marker 53) The Point Overlook (at Mile Marker 55.2) Sunday - June 19 6:00 AM - Meet at the Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows, unless you would prefer to shoot the sunrise 11:00 AM - Meet at Wayside Resturant and hike to Lewis Falls from Mile Marker 51.4.
