Bill Prosser’s Maing Sraegy  For 8.5 x 11 phoo paper:

I mae all my images, docor boh porrai and landscape, wha is ed longes dimension 10 inches. I hen decide wha sandard sizes I end o prin and a leas wo maes of each size, loo one for porrai/verical and one for landscape / horizonal orienaions. For me, I for inner openings of 10 x 5, 6, 7, 7.5, and 8; plus 8 x 8; excep I usually 1/8 inch smaller openings–e.g., 9 7/8 x 7 7/8–o mae i easier o ma. I usually choose ouer dimensions of plus 5 inches (2.5 inches per side) or 6 inches (3 inches per side)–e.g., 7 7/8 x 9 7/8 inner and 13 x 15 ouer. I whie maes wih bacings from: hp://www.maesandmore.com/.  They are very inexpensive and have done a good job for me. For compeiion prins ha I do no inend o sell, I non-archival whie. For images ha I migh wan o sell I usually purchase archival, rag maes. When I ma he prin I use an archival “plasic-ype” ape for boh joining he bacing o he over-ma and hanging he picure on he bacing ma. I follow sandard maing echnique

For larger prins o mee he 20 inch maximum for NVPS Compeiion:
I calculae prin size by saring wih 20 inches as maximum ouer ma size. I subrac he oal of he mae b (e.g. 5 or 6 inches) and hen do jus as above bu wor wih, in my , a maximum of 15 inches longes dimension for porrai and landscape. I hen wo or more 15 x 7, 8, 9,  10, 11, and 12–minus he 1/8 each dimension for he inner opening. (You may find ha you don’ need all hese sizes.) I wor wih an Epson R1800 priner, which has a 13 inch carriage, and seldom prin wider han 12 inch prins.
I recycle/reuse my maes for compeiion unil hey ge diry or banged up enough o no saisfy compeiion sandards.
