Ron Taylor, NVPS President

Welcome to Spring!   As I write this we are enjoying our second snowfall of the year.  It’s a particularly well-behaved snowfall, covering mainly trees, shrubs, and lawns and avoiding roads – perfect for photographers.

We begin March with a presentation by Robert Fawcett titled “Chasing the Stars – Capturing the Night Sky.”   Bob is a retired government employee who spent 26 years as a Forensic / Scientific / Technical photographer.  He will provide a presentation of capturing the Milky Way month by month, highlighting the season from January to October.

Our Education and Training meeting will feature the second preliminary review of Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  Ginger Werz-Petricka, Willa Siegel, and Brenda Wilson, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project this year, will offer additional feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented.

The judge for our March competition will be Mark Van Bergh.  Mark’s photographic interests are varied, ranging from a passion for nature and wildlife photography to travel, people, weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other events.  He has received several awards for his photography, including a first place in the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival Photography Competition.   Mark is currently co-coordinator of the National Zoo’s Photo Club. There is no theme this month.

Remember that we have revised the rules of competition for this year only, and have included the revised rules on the website.  To find them go to the website’s “Home” page, click on “(Member Menu)” and “Competitions->Rules of Competition”.  Please review the rules carefully before you submit your images.

Our field trip will be held at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Many of you a are familiar with Huntley Meadows, but if you are not, you are in for a treat.  Extensive woodland trails, boardwalks through the wetlands, and an observation deck allow for close viewing of the abundant and diverse wildlife.

Kieulan Nguyen and Kieu-Hanh Vu will offer Members Gallery presentations on Macro Photography and the FIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong, China, respectively.  Colena Turner will present a Members Forum titled “Egypt: Cairo and Points South.”

I look forward to seeing you at the meetings.  Stay safe and well.

Ron
