Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.

Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.

We will have an early admission, 9:30. We will be given a highlight tour from 9:30-10:00. We will be far enough inside the prison so other visitors shouldn’t bother us for a while.

We are getting a discount price of $11 per adult, $10 per senior. The tripod fee is $5 instead of $10. YOU MUST COME WITH EXACT CHANGE AS WE HAVE TO PAY IN ONE LUMP SUM UPON ARRIVAL.

Drive time from Virginia is 2 hours, 22 minutes according to Google maps without traffic.

Directions from the South or East:

• Take I-95 to Exit 22 (Old Exit 17) and follow Interstate 676 West.
• Get off at “Art Museum/Benjamin Franklin Parkway” Exit.
• At the top of the ramp, turn right onto 22nd street.
• Pass the Philadelphia Museum of Art (on your left) and continue five blocks north, to Fairmount Avenue.
