As the new season begins for NVPS it is time to launch a new Portfolio Project.  A portfolio is a collection of images with a common theme: Snow Landscapes, Birds, Barns, Passages, etc. Creating a portfolio is an excellent opportunity for any photographer to hone their skills and learn the art of self-critique.  Your portfolio will be a collection of photographs representative of your skills and accomplishments. Club members of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Hopefully, you logged in to the September 1st meeting for Nikhil Bahl’s excellent presentation on ‘Photographic Voice and Vision’.  Several times during the evening Nikhil showed us a good image, then a better one of the subject, followed by an even better one.  This idea of working a subject and concept to gain the best images you can is the crux of the Portfolio Project.

To see what members have done in past years go to the NVPS Portfolio Project Gallery.  Here you can see member’s portfolios as far back as 2008.  One of the fun and exciting aspects of the portfolio is the scope and variety of subject matter.  It has been an honor and treat over the years to see what our members think up for their projects.

One important aspect of Portfolio is that it is not a competition.  These projects are a personal journey, and although we will be having a preliminary review to offer suggestions and a final review to present your finished projects to the club, your work is not compared to the others. Each portfolio is reviewed on its own merits.

You can find a detailed description of the project at the Portfolio Project Page along with all the information on how to proceed.  As we will be meeting on-line for the foreseeable future we will have everyone sign-up by email to portfolioproject-2020@nvps.org.  Co-chairs this year are Ginger Werz-Petricka, Willa Siegel and Brenda Wilson.  Brenda is one of our newer members, and if you haven’t met her yet, please make a point of saying Hi when you see her on Zoom.  Brenda is retired from Boeing where she worked as a program manager and was heavily involved in the space program at NASA.  Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to see some of her rocket images soon. Willa is a long time NVPS member where she served as program manager for many years.

Looking forward to seeing your Portfolios!

Ginger Werz-Petricka, Willa Siegel, Brenda Wilson
