January 23rd, 2010 - Portfolio Critique
NVPS Portfolio Project Update

January 23rd, 2010 - Portfolio Critique
To all Portfolio Participants participating in the 01/23/2010 Critique:

The Portfolio Critique will be held at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts at 4811 Catharpin Road, Gainesville. (We will send out a reminder and directions nearer to the critique date.) We will plan to start at 1:30 PM and finish around 4:30 PM. We plan to:

• Overview the project and remaining calendar.
• Discuss each and all portfolios taken in the order
• Have a short break.

We anticipate the following for each portfolio critique:

• We will show and ask the Artist to read or paraphrase their Artist Statement
• Show each portfolio image (about 5 sec. each)
• Display the entire portfolio on one screen to facilitate discussion of overall portfolio.
• Joe will comment on coherence of portfolio and adherence to the Artist Statement
• He will then discuss the 2-4 images he thinks are the strongest, discuss the images he believes are the weakest, and explain why.
• The maker-artist will be given time to ask questions about portfolio and Joe's comments.
• After all portfolios are individually reviewed, we will open up for a general conversation about portfolio project.
• Quit at 4:30 PM

Currently there are 12 people signed up to participate. Given about 2.5 hours for critiquing this means each participant will receive at least 10 - 15 minutes of feedback. (This number of people and duration for each person's critique is approximate and may change by January 23.) During your time, if you wish, you may ask Joe and/or the audience questions about your portfolio or specific images; so you might give some thought beforehand what questions about your portfolio you have.

Please upload your images to the website in your portfolio folder, these will be the images used in the critique.  Alternately you can email Scott Musson your portfolio images no later than January 19 to Scott Musson nospam!#*&^#)type address - don't copy spam protection(*@.@nospamscottmusson.com" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 153); ">scottmusson@nospam!#*&^#)type address - don't copy spam protection(*@.@nospamscottmusson.com.  Please try to have your images uploaded to the web site by Jan 19th, this will allow Joe time to review your portfolio and in turn you'll benefit from Joe having time to review your portfolio ahead of time. Also it will allow for review by others before the critique. Limit the draft set for the critique to between about 12 and 18 images. If you would like to have a few more than 18 images , please contact us first before submitting them. The digital set should follow this procedure:

• Title the email "Portfolio Project."
• Size images no larger than 1024 pixels horizontal and 768 pixels vertical.
• Use a naming protocol: last name-blank-image number from 01 to total.)

Note: If you haven't requested access to the Portfolio Gallery on the NVPS website, please refer tohttp://nvps.org/main/meetings/portfolio/november_08_2009_portfolio_pro/ under the heading Getting access to the NVPS Portfolio Photo Gallery.

If you have any questions about the January 23rd critique, please contact Bill Prosser (prosserwm@nospam!#*&^#)type address - don't copy spam protection(*@.@nospamaol.com) or Scott Musson (smusson@nospam!#*&^#)type address - don't copy spam protection(*@.@nospammindspring.com)

Bill and I offer our thanks to Joseph Miller for the generous offering of his time, his facility "the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts" and his expertise in critiquing our portfolios.

Getting access to the NVPS Portfolio Photo Gallery

To get access to the NVPS Portfolio Gallery send your NVPS Gallery user id  to Scott Musson smusson@nospam!#*&^#)type address - don't copy spam protection(*@.@nospammindspring.com (I don't need your password).  When you do, I'll give you access to see the other portfolios and create a place for your portfolio to be uploaded. I'll also provide you rights to comment on others portfolios and  send you instructions on how to upload images to your new folder.
If you don't have a user id, it's very simple to register, just go to http://nvps.org/gallery and click "Register".

If you need help in any way, just let me know. I would also be happy to upload your images for you, just email them to me and name them including a number so I know what order you would like them to appear.

Your first image in your gallery should be your artist statement, just paste the text of your artist statement into an empty image. This is very important since people will be critiquing your portfolio based on your artist statement. This is one of the reasons why it's important to develop your artist statement first.

Remember you can send your artist statement to Bill or Scott for feed back if you like.
