President's Message

February 2013

The Photography show that Bob and I saw in New York several months ago,
Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop will be coming to the National Gallery of Art shortly. I enjoyed this show very much and look forward to seeing it again.

This exhibition, sponsored by Adobe, shows the history of photo manipulation from the very beginning of photography.  Whatever your point of view about the use of Photoshop, this show will put photo manipulation in to context.  The exhibition examines the use of manipulation for aesthetic presentation and its effect on historic truth.  It is also fun and enlightening!  This is a show that you must see.

February 17–May 5, 2013 in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, Ground Floor.

Monthly Program

February 5th: Chuck Veatch — Windland Smith Rice International Photography Contest

February's program will be a presentation by a longtime friend of NVPS, Chuck Veatch, who'll be speaking about the Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Photography Contest and the winning images. Many of the images shown will be in the exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History which opens in June. Chuck will discuss how the judging process works and demonstrate some creative ways to present images.

One of our region's top photographers, Chuck Veatch was a former member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, and judged our 2008-2009 Year-End Competition. Chuck has attended workshops with Freeman Patterson and the Rocky Mountain School of Photography

Chuck has given presentations and judged contests at the North American Nature Photography Association's National Convention, the New England Council of Camera Clubs, the Meadowlark Photo Exposition, and Washington-area camera clubs. He is involved in all aspects of Nature's Best magazine and Nature's Best Photography Contests, including photo selection and editing for the exhibits at The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

Education & Training

February 12th: Jim Jenkins — Portrait Lighting

On February 12 we have an Education and Training session on Portrait Lighting with Jim Jenkins, a professional lighting instructor who also presented last year.

In this session we will be working through single and two light portraits with minimal lighting equipment. The focus will be controlling light with reflectors and found surfaces and sources of light as well as working with existing available light. As an example, we will be doing a portrait photo using only two light sources and using a simple, inexpensive 5 in1 reflector for a background.

We would like to have 4-6 volunteers who will have a chance to try the set ups using their own camera and a single speedlite flash unit. The built in on camera flash won’t work for this so bring your flash unit with directional control (tilt/rotate) if you would like to try. Also, if you would like to volunteer, please know how to put your flash in the manual mode and adjust the output. The set-up we will use is not camera brand specific so Canon, Nikon Sony etc. are all fine for this. We will be discussing direction, color, quality and intensity of light sources among other topics. If you would like to volunteer to have a chance to try all this out, please let Roger Lancaster (roger “at” thelancasters.us) know asap. First come, first served.

We also need a few folks to volunteer as “models” who can pose for the various exercises (no pay unfortunately). Let Roger know if you are willing to do this. No special clothing or makeup required.

Competition

February 19th: Competition — Judge Victoria Restrepo

Co – Vice Presidents of Competition Mike Kane and Mike Whalen are pleased to welcome judge Victoria Restrepo for the club’s February 19, 2013 monthly club competition. About Victoria Restrepo:

Victoria is an accomplished professional photographer as well as an artist, with over 30 years of experience; she specializes in fine art, nature and travel photography. She studied fine arts in Colombia and photography at The New England School of Photography, in Boston. She has worked as a Commercial Photographer and as a photography and Photoshop teacher.

She was born in Colombia, South America, a magical place where mountains, gigantic rivers, desserts and rainforests run into the oceans. This fierce nature and the vibrant colors from her native Country are always present in her work. She works with light, her imagination and her own memories creating imaginary still lifes and landscapes, mixing photography, painting, and digital art.

Photography has always been around her. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather and her great-great-grandfather were some of the earliest photographers in South America and the Caribbean. The smell of the photographic chemicals, and the magical darkness of her family lab marked her life forever.

Victoria speaks at camera clubs, judges photographic competitions, and has an art studio for children. You can find out more about Victoria and her fine work at: http://www.vrestrepo.com/

You are invited to join judge Victoria Restrepo for dinner at Chili’s in Tyson’s Corner at 5:30 PM on Tuesday February 19, 2013. If you would like to join us please RSVP to Mike Kane (michaelaustinkanephoto ‘at’ gmail.com) by 5:30 PM on Monday, February 18th.

February 26th: Brian J. Zwit — Finding the Creativity Within You

Photographers have been told for generations that it is the person behind the camera that makes a great image, not the camera. Bookstores have a large selection of books and magazines about cameras, tools and techniques, but fewer selections of books about the people behind the camera or sitting at the computer. While the tools of our trade are important and can ultimately break or make an image, the importance of the non-tangibles in making great image is too often completely ignored or at least not emphasized enough.

Brian J Zwit has been photographing the natural world for close to 40 years. While teaching photography in the classroom and field, Brian has observed hundreds of photographers as they apply their skills and creativity. He has concluded, first, everyone is creative (even if they don't think so) and, second, everyone can learn to be more creative.

The title of Brian's presentation is Finding the Creativity Within You. He will explore what creativity is, how we exercise creativity when taking an image, and how we can all be more creative. Brian promises we will walk away with some concrete exercises for improving our own creativity and increasing confidence in our abilities to help create great images.

The pursuit of nature takes Brian all over the country but his favorite areas of the country to photograph are the west, mid-Atlantic, and northeast. His love of hiking and backpacking takes him far beyond populated areas, into settings which few people visit. His images are in private residences and corporate offices and have appeared in regional magazines and corporate brochures and other materials.

Brian is also recognized for his teaching skills and has taught workshops and classes for Blue Ridge Photography Workshops and camera clubs for over five years. He has college degrees in chemical engineering, law, and photography and extensive training in HTML, PHP, JavaScript, and other computer technologies and applications.

February 26th: Prints — Jan Ponder — Encaustics

Jan Ponder has been a member of NVPS for almost 8 years. Taking part in competitions, fieldtrips, exhibits and portfolio projects. Photography has brought a creative balance to her life. Taking images of nature and using the lens baby and infrared to make things more artistic. Having never been in a dark room she is now expanding her photography with encaustics.

The word encaustics means to burn. It is an ancient art of painting with hot wax. This technique was used in the Fayum mummy portraits in Egypt from around 100-300AD.
Jan’s method for using encaustics with photography is to print the photo on canvas, Japanese rice papers or other absorbent grounds. Adhere the image to a firm substrate such as birch plywood and paint on layers of wax (combination of bees wax and damar resin) to add texture and give it a luminous appearance, sometimes incorporating tinted waxes and colored paint sticks. Trees are one of her favorite subjects. A competent exhaust system is a must for this type of art.

She has taken encaustic workshops in Santa Fe, two in New York and the Torpedo Factory. She also attended the Encaustic Conference in Provincetown MA. In the past year she has shown her work at the Torpedo factory exhibits and Bin Room, Art in City Hall and Gallery West. To check out her work go to her web site. www.janponderphotography.com

February 26th: Digital — Judy McGuire

Judy McGuire became interested in photography and travel when she was 10 and took her first road trip to the western states with her family and her Kodak Brownie camera. She took snapshots documenting family, travels and pets for many years before getting a Nikon SLR for slide photography. In 2007, she switched to digital and now shoots with a Nikon 7000.

Judy is most interested in travel and nature photography and loves to photograph anywhere, searching out back roads as well as obvious sites. She enjoys giving slide shows for various groups and makes calendars and note cards with her photographs. Her work has been juried into Nature Visions and the Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibit, and has been published in Virginia Wildlife Magazine.

In 2001, Judy saw Luella Murri on one of the first Photographers of Northern Virginia programs. She phoned Luella after the show for NVPS information and became a member shortly afterwards. Since then, Judy has enjoyed learning about all aspects of photography from the club's activities.

Judy's show will feature photos of varied subjects taken within the last two years. A number of locations will be spotlighted, many of them in our general area.

Field Trips

February 16th: U. S. Botanic Gardens

Based on the field trip survey last year, many members prefer one day trips to nearby locations. The February field trip will take advantage of one of the most beautiful floral gardens in the United States.

The U.S. Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Avenue, SW, in DC. Their website is http://www.usbg.gov/

Those wishing to carpool can meet at the fire house at 9:15 AM. The garden opens at 10:00 AM. If you wish to take Metro, the Orange or Blue line will take you to the Federal Center SW station. We can meet at the entrance to USBG at 10:00 AM. Admission is free. Tripods are not allowed except by permit, obtained in advance per instructions on the USBG website! Only two tripods are permitted in the Gardens at the same time.

Those wishing to share lunch and lies can meet at the cafeteria in the Museum of the American Indian, just west of the garden about 12:30. You can return to the Botanic Gardens after lunch for more shooting if you wish. Since much of the garden is indoors, the weather should not be a factor. Bring your close up or macro lenses and have fun.

Portfolio Project

The initial critique was scheduled for January 29th with Sherwin Kaplan. While it is late in the cycle, you can still participate. The Portfolio Project is a nine month project that started in September and running through May 2013. Club members of all skill levels are encouraged to participate in this project. A Portfolio may include some images already taken, but primarily new images taken over the program year. The goal is to conceive a theme, craft an artist statement, capture images, and then present them as a portfolio.

The participant's goal is to create a portfolio of their best images, primarily collected between June 2012 and May 2013, exemplifying the objectives of the theme described in their Artist's Statement. These should be images one would be proud to share with others for years to come.

The beginning stages of the project entail picking a theme or concept and writing an Artist's Statement explaining what he or she is trying to accomplish with the project. For more details visit the website:
http://nvps.org/main/meetings/portfolio/nvps_portfolio_project_artists/.

In the beginning stages, some members may work on several themes, eventually refining to one subject over others. If you follow this model, it is helpful to draft an Artist Statement for all potential portfolio themes.

The NVPS web-site contains numerous articles and examples in the "Portfolio Project" link:
http://nvps.org/home/?cat=14

This year's coordinators are Ginger Werz-Petricka (vze39dgt" at "verizon.net) and Ken Barnett (ken.barnett" at "gmail.com). If you have questions or need help with your portfolio, feel free to contact us at portfolio@nvps.org. Need inspiration? Be sure and visit the Photo Gallery and see the truly impressive portfolio projects from years past.

Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC)

The Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) is an informal entity started in 1997 by Joseph Miller with the assistance of Dave Carter and Ed Funk. Its purpose is to promote communication and cooperation among area camera clubs. NVACC is made up of Member Clubs and Associated Member Clubs.

NVACC publishes a calendar of area member club events that can be found at http://www.nvacc.org/Calendars.html

This Fall, NVACC is hosting a seminar on camera club judging for those who want to become qualified to judge camera club competitions or just want to learn more about what judges look for in competition. More details are listed under the Events section earlier in this newsletter.

NVACC has a free, downloadable series of 25 guide books for photographers, which provide information about nearby areas that camera clubs might wish to visit. See their booklets at:

Editor's Note

Have you seen Ian Plant's new FREE eBook, 20 Indispensable Photo Tips? If not, the details on how to get your copy are on his blog. The link is available in Ian's workshop listing earlier in the newsletter. Ian has crafted a nice set of photography tips and presented them in a very enjoyable format. Ian's work represents the state of the art in media for photo books. His recent books look great on my iPad and computers. And the electronic books are there whenever you want to reference them. It truly is a brave new world.

Most serious photographers share a fantasy about creating their own photo book. Remember the movie, Bridges of Madison County? Even the National Geographic photographer played by Clint Eastwood talked about making his own photo book but suggested no one would buy it. The sad reality is that 99% of all photography books just do not sell enough to return their costs. Publishers consider these books to be "vanity press." Publishers say these are more about the ego of the author and are sales dead ends.

If you want to publish your own book, there are many publishers willing to help you out, but only in a way where their profitability is guaranteed. At fees ranging from $3,000 TO $30,000 and up, publishers will help photo/authors pull together a magnificent book and deliver the copies to their address. At that point, the author is on his own. Sadly, I know two people who have hundreds of copies of their wonderful books, sitting in boxes in their garage. (How many photo books did you buy over the past few years?)

eBooks and books on demand offer a way to get there. Georgette Grossman's November presentation included a number of publishing alternatives and they are listed within the copy of her presentation store in the Members Resources section of the NVPS website: http://nvps.org/home/?cat=17

So what is your experience? I created three photo books over the past six years and eventually self-published using Blurb. AMACOM published my most recent technical/business book, a collection of articles on strategic workforce planning. It is selling globally in both electronic and hard copy versions with good promotion on Amazon and in stores. As an author, the difference is remarkable. In the words of Billy Pilgrim, "So it goes..."

Comments, requests and submissions are solicited and welcomed. They should be sent to editor@nvps.org or given to me at a regular meeting. I test each issue of the newsletter using Internet Explorer, Safari and Google Chrome to ensure the layout and embedded links work correctly. If you encounter a problem reading FotoFax on your system, please let me know.
