As we begin our last month in this club year, I think I can speak for everyone in saying that it has been an amazing year. The programs; workshops, education and training; competitions; members gallery and forums; field trips; exhibits; website, newsletter; members resource; welcoming committee; portfolio project; have all provided inspiration, education and kinship. I am grateful to the multitude of volunteers and board members who have shared their time and talent to make NVPS the best club in the area.
The weekly meetings have been running extremely smoothly thanks to our VP Operations, Brian Payne and his team of merry men: Jeff Hancock, Kip Holdridge, Jim Norman and Paul Uhler. Andy Klein, our Facilities and EOY Coordinator made sure we had a roof over our heads. Curtis Gibbens and Beth Morris kept us awake with caffeine, and Tom Brett (and Beth) gave us a sugar high.
For those that have enjoyed the fruits of their labor, please remember to thank the people who give so generously of themselves. For those that have volunteered their time and talent, pat yourselves on the back – WELL DONE!
Please plan on coming to our Program night to hear Bert GF Shankman on May 3rd. Before the program, voting on proposed competition rules changes and the elected slate of officers for the 2011-2012 club year will be held. We need a quorum – so hope you can make it.
Also, you don’t want to miss the end of year (EOY) banquet and the results of the EOY competition on Friday, June 10th at the Westpark Hotel in Tysons Corner. Awards, food, spirits, camaraderie and great door prizes will abound. Bring your significant other(s), friends, relatives, etc. for a look at the best of the best images from the year and a fun evening.

Rules Changes
Proposed Changes to Competition Rules for 2011-2012 Club Year
On February 8th the NVPS board met and discussed how our current rules were serving the membership. Many members of the board agreed that there had been a lot of confusion for members, judges and Competition VP’s concerning the restricted and unrestricted categories. Category and class entry data was also analyzed. A Competition Rules Committee was appointed consisting of Georgette Grossman, Chair; Bob Friedman and Willa Friedman (current VP’s Competition), and Tom Burden and Melanie Marts (next year’s VP’s Competition). The Competition Rules Committee presented their proposal to the board on March 8th and it was accepted by the board. An additional proposal concerning time constraints on capture for competitions was brought forward by Bill Prosser and was also accepted by the board. An informational presentation was announced and presented to the membership on April 5th.
The membership will vote on these proposed changes to Competition Rules at the May 3rd meeting.
1. Change competition categories and classes from current to:
Category |
Classes |
Color Prints |
Novice and Advanced |
Digital Images |
Novice and Advanced |
Monochrome Prints |
Combined one class |
(the current restricted categories will go away)
2. Members must compete in the same class (novice or advanced) for all categories and if they are promoted in one category, they will be promoted in all categories
3. One competition per year (non-themed) will not be subject to the 2 year time constraint for image capture. The VP’s Competition will announce in advance which month the no-time-limit competition will be.
So that the membership is informed and has the opportunity to study the proposed changes, I am posting the following documents:
Please plan on coming to the NVPS meeting on the first Tuesday in May (May 3) to vote on the rules as well as the NVPS slate of officers.

Expressionist Interpretations
Bert GF Shankman
Tuesday, May 3, 7:30 PM
Please join us for the last Program of the year! The May meeting speaker will be fine art photographer Bert GF Shankman of Olney, Maryland. Mr. Shankman creates expressionistic interpretations of flowers grown in his gardens. His works have been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally.
Biography
Mr. Shankman is a fine art photographer whose specialty is flower photography. He grows his floral subjects at his home in the many gardens he tends. With his work close at hand, he photographs his subjects in all phases of development and in all kinds of weather. His images entail the use of a tripod to get multiple exposures for each composition. He also varies the focus points and the amount of light on his subjects. This enables him to compose an image controlling the clarity and the tones of the picture to correspond to his visualization of the final product. His intent is to use the flowers to evoke a wide range of emotions. All of his works are limited to editions of 25.
In 2009 Bert was chosen by the review committee of the Lishui Photo Festival to speak and present his works in a solo show in Lishui, China. The Lishui Photo Festival is a biennial photography festival held during the last week of November. Mr. Shankman was one of approximately 100 invited photographers from the U.S., Europe and China. He has also spoken to numerous photography clubs in the Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia area.
The talk will start with a few pictures showing the Lishui Photo Festival. Then Mr. Shankman will describe how he uses Focus Stacking in the creation of pictures including those for the festival. He will also talk about the different focus stacking software available today.
Personal Note
On a personal note, I want to thank the membership for the privilege of allowing me to serve as your VP Programs for the last four years. It has truly been a rewarding experience to be part of an organization with such a highly engaged and talented group of members.

Member Portfolio, Presentation and Critique
Ed Funk
May 10, 7:30 PM
The Workshop meeting on May 10th will be the final step of this year's Portfolio Project. At the meeting, Portfolios will be displayed, critiqued and discussed. In addition members will be provided an opportunity to have images reviewed and discussed informally by three other critics.
All Portfolio Project participants will display printed Portfolios and be available to discuss them with attendees. There will be a slide show of approximately 15 images from each of the portfolio participant, which will be accompanied by comments by this year's critic, Ed Funk. (Ed is a long-time member of the club and one of our best judges. You can read more about him at: www.edfunkphotography.com/Background.html) The critiques will emphasize the portfolio as a whole rather than comments on individual images (although, there may be comments on individual images as appropriate to illustrate their impact on the portfolio). After the critic reviews all the portfolios, attendees will be able to look at and discuss individual portfolios with their makers.

In Search of Artistic Personality–Zen-Through-the-Lens
Tuan Pham
May 24, 7:30 PM
At the May Forum Tuan Pham will open his albums for you to see how his artistic personality has evolved. He credits the NVPS portfolio projects for the inspiration and accidental encounter with Zen Art. As you probably know, Zen art is never intended for pure utility or pure aesthetic enjoyment. It is also to train the mind and bring it into contact with ultimate reality. Tuan will share several collections, including Old Man’s Bird Photography, Mo-Jo’s Drama, Drive-by Shootings, Simple is Super, Photographs from Intuition, and Forever Young.
Biography
Tuan Pham joined NVPS in 2005, after a basic course in photography and acquiring his first DSLR with social security proceeds. He is a seasoned meditation practitioner and amateur nature photographer, with a score of ribbons to his credit, eight images juried into the Meadowlark/Nature Vision 2011, and one to represent NVPS at the 2011 George W. Glennie Nature Competition. Tuan learned photography largely by reading books and magazines, and occasional workshops on creative vision with Joseph Miller, Freeman Patterson, and Andre Gallant, among others. He also draws inspiration from the works of Zen Master John Daido Roshi, Minor White, French impressionist painter Claude Monet, and Japanese haiku Master Matsuo Basho. Photography helps him see deeply without the camera and gives him great joy, particularly when photography and Zen touch to spark a serene inner setting and profound attunement to the present moment.

Roger Lancaster
May 24, 7:30 PM
Roger has been a member of NVPS since February 2009 and enjoys both the educational and camaraderie aspects of the club. He is humbled by the many extremely skilled photographers he has met in the club and aspires to be as good as they are, although he may not live that long!
A native of British Columbia, Canada, Roger’s early photographic experience was very much influenced by his grandfather who was a photo journalist for a small town newspaper and took countless photos of Roger as a young boy. Roger’s first camera was a gift from his grandfather; an old Kodak box camera. As a young adult he was given a Pentax 35 mm model, and relished time in the darkroom of his neighbor, although the results of his work were less than stellar. The raising of 2 kids limited his photography to the typical shots a proud parent takes at concerts, soccer games, and trips to amusement parks.
Late in his career as an association executive, he purchased a Sony Mavica camera with a 0.3 megapixel sensor, where images were shot and stored on 3 inch disks (you could get 10 images on a disk). The first attempts at digital photography really grabbed his attention, especially with the realization that you could take as many photos as you wanted to, and it didn’t cost you a cent to get them developed! In fact, the biggest obstacle he had to overcome in his initial attempts at digital was the hesitation in taking a lot of photos… a throwback to predigital days when you had to make absolutely sure you got the perfect shot…after all, the cost of film and the cost of processing was pretty high!
Now hooked on digital, he then purchased a Canon Powershot 3 megapixel point and shoot camera, then a 5 megapixel Canon point and shoot…and finding he was really hooked, switched teams to Nikon and bought a D70, his first DSLR camera. That camera is now used by his daughter and her family, and he now shoots with a Nikon D300. He loves his 18-200 Nikkor lens, but you can also find in his kit a 50mm 1.8, a 70-200 2.8, and a Sigma 10-20. Recently he purchased a 28-85 Nikkor lens for $25 at a yard sale and ran away as fast as he could before the seller realized that he had just given it away!
Roger considers himself an eclectic photographer, telling people that he shoots whatever strikes his interest at the time…although he admits that a well-shaped tree or a scenic landscape during a sunrise will grab his attention every time. Retirement in 2008 has brought him the time to pursue the hobby he loves. He tries to get out on shoots at least once a week, and if he doesn’t, his family makes plans for an intervention. His plans in the near future include Twin Falls State Park in West Virginia and the annual family summer trek to Surfside Beach SC with a side trip to Huntington Beach State Park just down the road from the beach.
During his time in the club he has enjoyed the competitions immensely and was honored to be Novice Monochrome Photographer of the Year last year, while one of his photos won Novice Color Print of the Year and another won Honorable Mention in the Best of Year Enhanced Photo category. He has also had photos juried into the Nature Vision Expo and the new Meadowlark Photo Exhibition, which is part of the Foto DC contest.
While he sees in the monthly Members’ Gallery absolutely marvelous works of art, he is both humbled and honored to be able to show you the results of his work. Please enjoy!
Digital Presentation
Dan Ward
May 24, 7:30 PM
Dan Ward uses photography in an effort to capture images that touch people by capturing decisive moments of intense emotions such as love, joy, sorrow and contemplation. He began his photography career as the head photographer for his high school newspaper over 40 years ago and honed his visual skill while traveling the world as a trumpet player in the US Navy jazz band, the Ambassadors and the US Navy Rock Band, Fly in the Soup. He polished his skills in photography classes at the University of North Texas and has continued developing his eye while working as a human capital executive and people strategy consultant. After moving to northern Virginia in 2003, he became active in the Loudoun Photo Club and shifted his membership to NVPS in 2010.
Dan shot medium format and 35mm until he began the migration to digital in 2001. His first love is street photography, although he also has a passion for nature photography. He is a confirmed Nikonoholic and currently uses a D7000 as his primary camera, although he occasionally uses a Holga “to keep from becoming too dependent on technology.”
Dan has received awards in a variety of photography shows including the Ellipse Gallery’s Best Photos of the Last 75 Years, Claude Moore Nature Photo Expos, Nature’s Vision 2010, several Meadowlark Nature Photo Expos (Kodak Sponsor’s Choice award 2006), On Your Own Time art shows in Dallas (People’s Choice Awards in 2004 and 2006) and various community art shows in Virginia, Texas, Connecticut and Arizona. His astrophotos have been published in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines as well as David Levy’s bestseller, The Sky.
For the past four years, he has been involved in “phoetry” – a process of combining photos with poetry in a way that integrates the two mediums so that the end result is greater than the sum of the parts, and not just simply an annotated photo or illustrated poem. He is the co-author of two phoetry collections published by Blurb books, Emerge and Plane of Life. The Atrium Gallery in McLean featured a show of his most recent phoetry collaboration in the fall of 2010. Samples of his work are available on line at danlward.com
Dan’s presentation tonight is on “Phoetry.” He will show a few examples of the evolution of the process and include recent works.

Manfrotto 303SPH Sperical Panoramic tripod head kit. The Manfrotto 303SPH QTVR Head Kit is a multi-row (spherical) panoramic photography head. It has two sliding plates to position the camera over the panoramic axis of rotation, plus a sliding plate which rotates around the front/back tilt axis. This allows the camera to be rotated on both horizontal and vertical axis around the camera/lens nodal point, so multi-row panoramic photo sequences (cubic VR photos) can be taken accurately and easily. Costs $650 new. Make me an offer. Fred Chitty 703-493-8530 or email chittyfc "at" bp.com.
This will be my last issue as editor. Beginning with the Summer issue, I will turn responsibility for the newsletter over to the very capable hands of Dan Ward. The job has been a learning experience for me. I appreciate all of the article and photo contributions over the years.
