{"id":6825,"date":"2015-02-12T21:44:20","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T02:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/?p=6825"},"modified":"2017-04-25T20:51:23","modified_gmt":"2017-04-26T00:51:23","slug":"march-24-2015-members-gallery-prints-by-fran-bastress-and-digital-images-by-kip-holdridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/march-24-2015-members-gallery-prints-by-fran-bastress-and-digital-images-by-kip-holdridge\/","title":{"rendered":"March 24, 2015: Member&#8217;s Gallery\u2013Prints by Fran Bastress and Digital Images by Kip Holdridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Prints \u2013 Fran Bastress<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6826\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Fran-Bastress_headshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6826\" src=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Fran-Bastress_headshot-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fran Bastress \" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fran Bastress<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fran has been involved in photography for decades as a hobbyist but, like many NVPS members, had a hiatus while tending to family and career.\u00a0 She initially became engrossed after buying a secondhand Hasselblad and taking a photography course in Boston, where she developed her darkroom skills.\u00a0 Her walls are covered with the black and white pictures she took during her years in New England, and some themes in those photos continue in her work today: the natural world and landscapes that incorporate water and things related to the sea.\u00a0 These interests attracted her in recent years to Canada\u2019s Atlantic Provinces, including New Brunswick where she took the Andre Gallant\/Freeman Patterson\u2019s photography workshop.\u00a0 Fran credits it with heightening her ability to see the world around her.<\/p>\n<p>It was an Annie Leibovitz exhibit in 2006 that prompted Fran to reengage in photography and enter the digital age.\u00a0 She shelved her old Canon Rebel, bought a 30D, and took courses from<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6827\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Monk-in-Bhutan-Doorway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6827\" src=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Monk-in-Bhutan-Doorway-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"Monk in Bhutan Doorway\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Monk-in-Bhutan-Doorway-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Monk-in-Bhutan-Doorway-671x1024.jpg 671w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Monk-in-Bhutan-Doorway.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monk in Bhutan Doorway<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eliot Cohen. \u00a0She recently moved from a Canon 7D to a 5D Mark III.\u00a0 She does her own printing and matting and has participated in workshops and tours.\u00a0 But now, she and her husband do extensive research and networking to create their own photography tours.\u00a0 With extended family in Vermont and Phoenix, they\u2019ve traveled repeatedly to the Northeast and Southwest, but during 2015 they plan to focus on the Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>Fran has been an NVPS member since 2010 and is grateful for all the information and encouragement she has acquired from the club, and she credits it with reigniting her passion for photography.\u00a0 She serves on the board as secretary\/historian and is participating in the Portfolio Project.\u00a0 Last year she was awarded print of the Year (Class 3) for her <em>Monk in Bhutan Doorway<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the prints on display are ones that placed in NVPS competitions, as well as those juried into other exhibits: ArtSpace Herndon, Nature Visions, including their traveling exhibits, and Joe Miller\u2019s Abstract Exhibit.\u00a0 Later this year Fran has a solo exhibit scheduled.\u00a0 She\u2019s recently updated her website and suggests visiting it to see the photo slideshows with musical accompaniments: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visionsbyfran.net\/\">www.visionsbyfran.net<\/a><\/p>\n<p>_________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<h1>Digital Images &#8211; Kip Holdridge<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6829\" src=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge02-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"Holdridge02\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge02-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge02.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Kip Holdridge learned \u201cthe basics\u201d of photography at a young age. At 6 years old, his mother taught him the mechanics of using an SLR camera and the rules of composition. After a childhood behind the lens, Kip and photography slowly grew apart as after school activities took up more of his time. After finishing college and starting a career, he found his way back to photography with a little nudging from his mother. He purchased his first DSLR in early 2008 and joined NVPS in the spring of 2009. Kip was the recipient of the NVPS \u201cPhotographer of the Year\u201d and \u201cImage of the Year\u201d awards in the Novice Unrestricted Digitally Projected Images category for the 2010-2011 competition year and the \u201cPhotographer of the Year\u201d award in the Advanced Digitally Projected Images category for the 2012-2013 year.<\/p>\n<p>Kip\u2019s photography can be seen online at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/krhphotography<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Great American Horse Drive<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6828\" src=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge01-300x130.jpg\" alt=\"Holdridge01\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge01-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Holdridge01.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In a small town in Northwest Colorado, history and traditional endure in one of the largest annual horse drives in the country. A herd numbering over 400 strong, one of the largest in Colorado, is driven from their winter range to a ranch through 60 miles of countryside over two days. Kip\u2019s presentation will chronicle several years of the horse drive, including the herd, riders, and working cowboys and cowgirls in action.
