RSVP for the Photoworks Masters Lecture Series by sending an email to\u00a0photoworks.gallery &#8220;AT&#8221; gmail.com.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll send you a confirmation email, with instructions for payment.<\/p>\n<h3>Frank Van Riper<\/h3>\n<p>Internationally acclaimed photographer, journalist and author <a href=\"http:\/\/gvrphoto.com\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Van Riper<\/a> will kick off the Master Lecture series on Saturday, Oct. 25th with a lavishly illustrated talk entitled \u201cPhotographing in a Foreign Country.\u201d Frank, who leads photography workshops in Maine, Umbria and Venice with his wife and professional partner Judith Goodman, is the author of five books, including the international bestseller Serenissima: Venice in Winter. In his talk Frank will combine gorgeous landscape and documentary photography with practical hints on how these photographs were made. This lecture follows Frank\u2019s first Photoworks lecture last Spring, entitled \u2018See the Light\u2019 that drew back-to-back sold out audiences.<\/p>\n<h3>James Steele<\/h3>\n<p>Acclaimed landscape photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photographybysteele.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Steele\u2019s<\/a> arresting black and white landscapes have been compared to those of the late masters Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Working primarily in medium and large format, Steele&#8217;s &#8220;scapes&#8221; of land, sea&#8211;and the human body&#8211;represent the finest in traditional and digital photographic imagery. Jim, who will lecture on November 1, has studied with Cole Weston, George Tice, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenneson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joyce Tenneson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christopherjames-studio.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christopher James<\/a>, Carson Graves, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthacasanave.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martha Casanave<\/a>. Besides teaching at Photoworks, Jim has taught at the Art League School in Alexandria, Va., at the Smithsonian, as well as at VISARTS. His work can be seen in studio #343 at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Old Town.<\/p>\n<h3>Frank &#8220;Tico&#8221; Herrera<\/h3>\n<p>The most senior of the speakers in the Photoworks Master Lecture Series, <a href=\"http:\/\/glenechopark.org\/frank-tico-herrera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank \u2018Tico\u2019 Herrera<\/a> has been teaching at Glen Echo since Photoworks began more than 40 years ago.\u00a0 An unsurpassed black and white darkroom printer, in 1985 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to document clusters of Roman crosses that were being erected all over West Virginia by a millionaire businessman as part of a religious mission called \u201cCast Thy Bread.\u201d This effort, as well as Tico\u2019s large format, black and white photos, generated both news and controversy. Besides showing \u201clots of pictures\u201d and telling &#8220;lots of stories&#8221; during his appearance on November 8, Tico will discuss \u201cthe effect(s) on the vernacular landscape by the introduction of dogma-laden symbols and vice-versa.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Karen Keating<\/h3>\n<p>Rounding out the Master Lecture Series on November 15th will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karenkeating.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karen Keating<\/a>, an acclaimed documentary photographer and author.\u00a0 Keating, who also is the Director of Photoworks, as well an award-winning 25-year darkroom photography teacher at Washington\u2019s Field School, will present \u201cSnapshots of Photo History&#8211;Process &amp; Personalities.\u201d\u00a0 The lecture will cover the highlights of photography\u2019s 175 years:\u00a0 from early processes, to important personalities like &#8216;Father of Photography&#8217; Alfred Stieglitz, to Farm Security\u00a0 Administration (FSA) photographers of the Great Depression, to war photographers from the Civil War to the present.
