Paul Herholz\"_MG_2178_nvps_web\"<\/span><\/h3>\n

Paul will be presenting prints from his August 2012 trip to Iceland.\u00a0 With a few exceptions they are all taken in the Highlands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was a member of a photo tour consisting of himself, three other participants, the pro and his wife.\u00a0 They lived in a cottage and the wife did the cooking (magnificently).\u00a0 No TV or radio for a week.\u00a0 Just conversation.\u00a0 He thought it was a nice change from “normal” life.<\/span><\/p>\n

He scheduled two plus days by himself in Reykjavik a city he found \u00a0fascinating.\u00a0 He wandered the streets most of the time and did more street photography than he had ever done. He will include two montage prints of photos taken in Reykjavik.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iceland is geographically unique in the world. \u00a0He highly recommend it to any landscape photographer as well as he recommends a photo tour of some kind.\u00a0 The interior of the country is difficult. \u00a0He’s not sure that you’d be happy with the results if you made this trip on your own.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has three albums from Iceland on my website,\u00a0www.paulherholz.phanfare.com<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 The largest is called “The Highlands”, another is “Reykjavik”, and finally “Iceland-Memory Pictures”.\u00a0 This is the back story, so to speak.\u00a0\u00a0 His photo bio follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

\"_MG_2681_nvps_web\"My interest in photography has been at both ends of my life, when I was a teenager and now, with not much in the middle.\u00a0<\/span>My formal education was a correspondence course from The New York Institute of Photography and Navy photography training.<\/span>\u00a0As a kid I would load film in the closet and then wait for dark to do printing in the basement.\u00a0 After I got my driver’s license I worked part time in a camera shop during high school and early college.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I was 17 I joined the Navy Reserve and became a photographers mate, using the iconic 4×5 Speed Graphic. When I got my Army commission photography went by the wayside.<\/span>\u00a0For no known reason, I again developed a serious interest in photography about\u00a0four years ago.\u00a0 I’ve always loved travel and now photography is the reason for the trips I take.\u00a0 I have other subject interests but travel photography is primary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self Improvement Project<\/h3>\n

Showing the images created by the participants in the self-improvement project throughout the club year.<\/p>\n

“The objective of these field trips is to improve our photographic vision by learning to recognize and use the building blocks of visual design in creating images. If you\u2019re like me, you have favorite pictures, ones you have taken and those taken by others, but have difficulty articulating what it is that makes them good. Hopefully, these Self Improvement Field Trips will help us in consciously using the elements of visual design to create and understand compelling images.”<\/p>\n

We used Freeman Patterson\u2019s book, \u201cPhotographing The World Around You\u201d (A Visual Design Workshop) as a study aid. Each month there was an assignment, e.g lines, triangles, circles, etc. There were monthly field trip to Green Spring Park.<\/p>\n
