November has us shifting our attention and our cameras to the changing colors and temperatures of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month I am reading Austin Kleon\u2019s book, Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered<\/em>. Austin writes about being discovered and how we can successfully share our creativity; however, we first need to nurture our creativity in a positive way. He writes about how to create an online presence and how to put ourselves out there to engage and \u201cbe discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I interpret Austin\u2019s \u201cbeing discovered\u201d as more commercially focused, I believe we first need to \u201cbe discovered\u201d by our own group of peers, and when I say \u201cbe discovered\u201d, I really mean to \u201cbe seen\u201d. When we are seen by a group of peers and colleagues, we belong. Belonging is an important component to creativity and developing our skills and passion as photographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austin writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great ideas are often birthed by a group of creative individuals\u2014artists, curators, thinkers, theorists, and other tastemakers\u2014who make up an \u201cecology of talent.\u201d If you look back closely at history, many of the people who we think of as lone geniuses were actually part of \u201ca whole scene of people who were supporting each other, looking at each other\u2019s work, copying from each other, stealing ideas, and contributing ideas.\u201d Good work isn\u2019t created in a vacuum, and….creativity is always, in some sense, a collaboration, the result of a mind connected to other minds.1<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This embodies our NVPS mission in creating a community of photographers for learning and sharing. Being a member of NVPS not only nurtures our creativity, it also moves us to find an outlet to share our art once we create it. This month reflects on how you share your photography with your family, friends, and in community. Who do you want to share it with? Why? NVPS offers many outlets for sharing and building your creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would not have such a rich community of support for learning and growing without the hard work of our volunteers and, for each of you, our members. Thank you to all our volunteers who plan and make the magic happen and thank you for being a member of NVPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
