{"id":23663,"date":"2021-11-15T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/?p=23663"},"modified":"2021-12-09T16:43:10","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T21:43:10","slug":"december-12-2021-field-trips-capitol-hill-christmas-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/december-12-2021-field-trips-capitol-hill-christmas-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"December 12, 2021: Field Trips: Capitol Hill Christmas Tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>***Rescheduled to Sunday December 12th <\/b>due to Saturday weather forecast of wet and windy***<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing like getting into the holiday spirit than by visiting a giant tree decorated with lights.\u00a0 In December, we&#8217;ll visit the Capital Christmas Tree and surrounding area for an evening of photographic creativity.\u00a0 There will be urban landscapes, architecture, light painting and more.\u00a0 The monuments on the East side of the Mall are great at night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23661\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rena_Schild-Capitol-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23661 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rena_Schild-Capitol-1-300x294.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rena_Schild-Capitol-1-300x294.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rena_Schild-Capitol-1-768x752.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/nvps.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Rena_Schild-Capitol-1.jpeg 981w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Rena Schild<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Capital Dome and Christmas tree will be our primary subjects, however, there&#8217;s lots of goodies around Capital Hill so feel free to explore the area.\u00a0 The US Botanical Garden will also have their own outdoor holiday display (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbg.gov\/plan-your-holiday-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.usbg.gov\/plan-your-holiday-visit<\/a>) that will be open until 5pm.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t forget about the East side of the Capital Dome.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s a wet evening, you&#8217;ll likely find interesting (and fun) puddles on the pavement in front of the East side of the Capital.\u00a0 Across 1<sup>st<\/sup> St. you have both the Library of Congress and Supreme Court for even more subjects.\u00a0 If the Capital Dome is your thing, maybe also check out the Upper and Lower Senate Park and look South for the dome.\u00a0 There&#8217;s lots to see and do.<\/p>\n<p>Sunset\u00a0 4:47 p.m. (EST)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well, but other ranges will also work if you want to bring more glass. Maybe leave the super telephoto at home.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to attract too much attention.<\/li>\n<li>Generally speaking, Capital police won&#8217;t allow tripods except on the land around the Christmas tree. National Park police are more forgiving.\u00a0 If things are busy at the outdoor botanical garden display, don&#8217;t be surprised if someone asks you not to use a tripod.\u00a0 Politely accept their plenty of free parking at the end of Maryland Ave. (near the US Botanical Gardens).\u00a0 If that lot is full, try for the other lot at the end of Pennsylvania Ave.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you&#8217;re still out of luck, there is limited parking to the North along Louisiana Ave. (on the way to Union Station).<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll meet in front of the US Botanical Gardens building at 4:00pm.\u00a0 That gives us an opportunity to enjoy each other&#8217;s company prior to the photo shoot.\u00a0 It also gives us the option to capture a sunset if one materializes.\u00a0 If you arrive early to
