On Sunday, May 18th, we’ll visit a unique National Natural Landmark in Maryland. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is one of the northernmost stands of bald cypress trees and the only large stand of the trees on the western shore of Maryland. A quarter mile long wooden boardwalk snakes around these relics of the past. Distinctive, knobby cypress “knees” emerge from the water near the boardwalk providing many photographic opportunities. On spring mornings, visitors will be serenaded by birds such as the golden-colored Prothonotary warbler and the ground-foraging Louisiana waterthrush. Admission is free. The park opens at 1PM on Sundays and closes at 4:30PM everyday. Here is a link: Battle Creek Nature Education Society – Battle Creek Cypress Swamp for more information. Tom Pratuch will lead anyone who wants to follow, or needs a ride, from Dunn Loring at 11AM that day.
