The following are he biographies of he members presening on January 24h:
A reired Sae Deparmen Foreign Service Officer, John has been an enhusiasic amaeur phoographer since his high school days in Monana. Inroduced o serious phoography by a family friend, he pursued he hobby passionaely hroughou his adul years while on various diplomaic assignmens in Washingon, DC and abroad, including China, Burma, Swizerland, Singapore, Turey, Brazil. Iniially John used Nion cameras and a Rollieflex o creae film images and explore he myseries of he darroom.. Ten years ago he convered o a digial SLR and currenly uses a Nion D300 (favorie lens a Nior 18-200mm) and edis primarily wih Phooshop.
Over he years John’s primary subjec ineress have been his large family and he unique scenic opporuniies presened by overseas assignmens. He is woring on a projec o scan his archive of negaives and slides produced in hose days. Of lae John has focused his aenion on images in naure and his surrounding world ha conain appealing absracions and srong design elemens. Subjec maer is secondary; John’s goal is o recognize and carve ou “recangles of beauy” and “aesheic vialiy” in our complex, everyday visual world.
Though he has aen a number of film and digial phoography courses in he Washingon area (Smihsonian, Corcoran, ec.) he had never been ineresed in exhibiing his wor ouside his home unil joining NVPS in Sepember, 2006. He would classify himself as a fairly silled amaeur wih a drive o use his camera and all available echnology o produce arisic phoographs pleasing enough o hang on his own walls and, perhaps, elsew!
Tuan Pham became involved in phoography very lae in life. He bough his firs SLR, a Nion D-70, when he was approaching 70 years of age.
In 2005 he joined NVPS and has learned a grea deal from he club, paricularly from club members Joe Miller, Corey Hilz, Ed Fun, and Paul Simmons. He has also advanced his nowledge by aending worshops augh by Freeman Paerson, Andre Gallan, and Tony Swee.
Tuan has earned many club’s ribbons including Novice Digial Image of he Year (2008) and Novice Digial Projecion Phoographer of he Year (2009). His firs image was juried ino Meadowlar Annual Exhibiion in 2008. In May 2009 Tuan was promoed from Novice o Advanced in he Digial Projecion caegory and developed a self-sudy worshop called Conemplaive Phoography: Seeing wih Renewed Clariy–an embodimen of Easern conemplaion and Wesern ars, and a manifesaion of he ar of mindful ing and mindful-living. His goal is o creae pleasing images wih a good balance of ing, feeling, and hining
Tuan’s phoography plan is hreefold: (1) o documen he growh of his welve grand children, (2) o use he camera o learn o wihou a camera, and (3) o each a worshop in conemplaive phoography.
In 1995 Tuan oo an early reiremen from inernaional baning and began a par-ime career in conflic resoluion. He has coninued in his career and also eaches a worshop in Buddhis conemplaion o ame disurbed emoions.
