“When I have a camera in my hand, I know no fear.”
Alfred Eisenstaedt
French-born American Photographer
I want to start my article by recognizing Mr. Joseph “Joe” Adolph Miller who left us to be with the Lord on January 3, 2023. An incredibly talented photographer and member of NVPS (where he served as President), he left an indelible mark on NVPS and the photographic community of Northern Virginia. The annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit (2023 will be the 13th year of this contest) is a true testament to Joe’s love for photography. Going back to 1997 Joe (working with Dave Carter and Ed Funk) created the Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs (NVACC) which helped to promote communication and cooperation among the various area camera clubs. Through NVACC judges were trained and 25 booklets (including Field Trips Guide Book for Photographers) were created for the betterment of every club and photographer in the area. His Center for Photographic Arts offered special workshops, seminars, critiques, and classes for member camera clubs. Joe, you were an impactful and fearless photographer, and you will be missed.
February should be a great month for NVPS and I encourage you all to attend each week.
On February 7 we welcome back Brian Zwit who will present “Storytelling, Videomaking, and Photography,” where he explains the advantages, disadvantages, and differences between still photography and filmmaking, and how to incorporate filmmaking into your story telling.
On February 14 Education & Training will have the first of two interim Portfolio Project Reviews. This should be a great evening and I want to thank our Portfolio co-chairs, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Brenda Wilson, joined by Deb Rose, for your hard work and dedication to this valuable program.
Our monthly field trip is scheduled for February 20 and includes a visit to the Library of Congress in downtown Washington. To learn more about these programs and events visit the NVPS Events Calendar on our website.
On February 21 we welcome Jennifer King who will be judging our non-themed competition. If you have questions or need guidance, please see the Rules of Competition.
For Member’s Gallery on February 28 Nancy Dubiell and Bill Vanderpool will be presenting “East Africa―Again” and Clark Barker will be sharing “Italy’s Adriatic Coastal Towns.” The evening will conclude with the Member’s Forum presentation by Kathryn Mohrman titled “Tribal Angola.” Not only will you be carried away to some exotic locations, but you will be “blown away” by the wonderful photographic skills exhibited by Nancy, Bill, Clark and Kathryn.
See you on Tuesday night and keep those shutters clicking!
