SUMMARY:Education & Training: Preliminary Portfolio Review—Group 1 (Changed to Zoom from In-Person owing to weather conditions)
DESCRIPTION:SCHEDULE CHANGE — E&T will be held over Zoom this evening due to the weather conditions.  See the Tuesday eBlast for the Zoom link.  Dinner and a Meeting is also cancelled. \n\n\n\nDuring this review the portfolio co–chairs\, Ginger Werz–Petrick\, Willa Friedman\, and Fred Krebs\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement. \n\n\n\nSelf–analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. The Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 11. Final reviews will be April 8 for the first group and May 20 for the second group.

SUMMARY:Program - (Zoom) Diptychs and Triptychs with Kai McBride
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nThere is something deceptively simple about the creation of a diptych: just put any two photographs next to each other. Add a third photograph and you can call it a triptych. But is that all there is? If you take one photograph and cut it into three parts and present it together\, is that a triptych? What’s happening for the viewer when they are presented with multiple photographs that they are asked to digest all at once? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation Kai picks apart the photo-to-photo dynamics that can be used in making compelling multiples. He shows how you can explore themes\, tell stories\, and present a visually cohesive narrative in a diptych or triptych. Grounded in the visual language of historical religious art\, the contemporary photographer can express symbolic relationships in their work that are not possible in a single photograph.Following this talk you will want to explore your own archive to create new sophisticated pairings–even from different bodies of work. In addition to helping you think in multiples\, these techniques are useful when editing and sequencing photographs for an exhibition or book. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nKai McBride\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKai McBride is a photographer\, teacher\, musician\, and maker based in Santa Fe\, NM. After receiving his MFA in Visual Arts in 2008 he has been teaching photography courses at the College and University level\, including ten years at Columbia University in New York. Since relocating to Santa Fe\, Kai splits his time between teaching online photography courses for StrudelMediaLive and building and expanding his off-grid cabin on the Glorieta Mesa. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In-Person) - Planes\, Trains\, and Automobiles (but mostly Planes) with Jeff Hancock
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening of tips\, tricks\, and photography as Jeff Hancock shares his love for transportation options enjoyed by John Candy and Steve Martin in the 1987 comedy.  Don’t worry\, you won’t miss any holidays with your family as we visit airshows\, train museums\, drift events\, and more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeff Hancock has been a detachable lens photographer since 1987.  His first professional gig was for a Surfer in Hawaii who paid him $20 for a roll of film and he’s been underpaid ever since.  He’s now the official photographer for the Office of Historic Alexandria\, The Mike O’Meara Show Podcast\, Die Laughing Productions\, and Dangerboy\, a rock and roll cover band.   \n\n\n\nNone of this pays enough for him to quit his day job in Data Visualization.   He photographs everything in front of him that looks interesting and sometimes seeks out interesting things to stand in front of to make photographs. He’s been a member of NVPS since 2007.   \n\n\n\nYou can see his work\, paid and otherwise\, at https://www.jeffhancockphotography.com/

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person): Historic Cape May\, New Jersey with Janice Kane
DESCRIPTION:Cape May\, New Jersey is a quaint\, historic town located at the southern tip of New Jersey.  It was founded in 1609\, originallyas hunting grounds. It soon became a hub for the East Coast whaling industry. In 1761\, it became the first seashore resort in our country.  After a fire swept through the town in the late 1800’s\, new buildings were constructed in the “modern” Victorian Style.  It is those homes that are the center of this presentation. Preservation efforts have allowed Cape May to retain much of the architecture constructed during that time and that has resulted in its present-day charm. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice and her husband Jake have three daughters and three grandchildren.  Her daughters and grandchildren are her favorite subjects to photograph! \n\n\n\nHailing from a large Philly family\, Janice loved to take photos of their many family events.  She especially enjoyed taking family photos at the beach\, particularly a small town just North of Cape May.  When comparing her images to others she had seen\, Janice realized she needed to learn more about her camera\, photo composition\, and editing. Upon retirement\, she finally had more time to dedicate to improving her photography.  Her education began with taking an Introduction to Photography course at Northern Virginia Community College. She also tookseminars from local photography centers along with reviewing online tutorials.  All came up short in addressing Janice’s growing interest and desire to improve.  By searching the internet for photography clubs\, Janice learned of NVPS.  Janice became a member of NVPS in January of 2019. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, Janice signed up for the mentorship program.  Shesigned up for the portfolio project and attended as many field trips as possible.  Each provided much-needed guidance in the various aspects of photography. These activities also allowed her to interact with very knowledgeable members from whomshe continues to learn. \n\n\n\nShooting family functions and portraits continues to be her main focus.  As a beach lover\, she particularly enjoys taking surfers\, boaters\, and water fowl.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: U.S. Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:NVPS January 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn January\, NVPS will visit the tropical conditions inside the U.S. Botanical Garden located at the foot of Capital Hill on Independence Ave.  Exhibits at the Garden range from roses to orchids\, the rain forest of the Mid-Atlantic\, endangered plants and the latest in home gardening. The indoor galleries display flora of the jungle\, desert and primeval settings. This diversity of form and color will provide outstanding photographic opportunities.  Admission is free. \n\n\n\nThe Botanical Garden has a photographic policy which prohibits the use of tripods unless you have a permit.  There are a limited number of tripod permits available.  If you plan to use one\, you must get prior approval by contacting Victoria Gesell at victoria.gesell@aoc.gov.  Permit reservations must be requested at least one week in advance.  Permits on the day of our trip may not be available\, but check with the visitor’s desk for approval. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.usbg.gov/visit/photography-and-art-policy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Garden entrance at the opening time of 9:45 AM for a short meet and greet before the Garden opens at 10am.  We’ll take images of the plants and scenery inside the Garden for a couple of hours and then take a break.  Across the street at the Smithsonian American Indian Museum is the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe.  We’ll meet there at 12:30pm for some coffee and snacks. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n• Bring your favorite close up or macro lens.  A 24-70mm will also be useful for indoor shots.  Be mindful that the Garden is a popular destination in the Winter so bring your patience as well.   \n\n\n\n• The Garden maintains high humidity in some areas and mists the plants with water.  This leaves the plants wet and shiny.  You can cut the shine and pop the colors if you remember to bring your polarizer. \n\n\n\n• Be mindful when transitioning between exhibits.  Bring your microfiber cloth or official NVPS spud to help keep your lens free of fog. \n\n\n\n• Use of a tripod requires a permit.  See above. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, January 25\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm  \n\n\n\nSunday\, January 26\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm (in case of bad weather) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet at 9:45am outside the Garden’s entrance facing The Mall / Maryland Avenue SW.   \n\n\n\nThe US Botanic Garden does not have any official parking available.  Parking on Maryland Avenue SW is restricted\, especially if Congress is in session.  You will find metered street parking in the area\, including across Independence Ave.  Metro is great alternative.  The Orange\, Blue\, and Silver lines will all take you to Federal Center SW which is a two block walk on Third Street NW\, South of the Garden. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In Person) Storytelling in Portrait Photography with Catherine Wang
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStorytelling in portrait photography is the art of conveying a narrative or emotion through a single image. It involves capturing more than just the subject’s appearance–using expressions\, body language\, environment\, lighting\, and props to create a deeper\, meaningful connection. Each element in the photograph works together to evoke a sense of story\, inviting the viewer to interpret and engage with the subject’s experiences or emotions. In my presentation\, I will share insights from my experiences photographing a diverse range of individuals\, illustrating how to achieve exceptional results through a step-by-step approach. A key focus will be on the strategic use of props–such as vintage accessories\, musical instruments\, or personal artifacts–to add depth and context to portraits\, thereby enriching the storytelling aspect of the images. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nCatherine Wang is an International award-winning photographer based in DMV area\, specializing in portrait\, still life\, architecture\, and dance photography. Her work was also exhibited in many countries\, such as UK\, Switzerland\, Canada\, Germany\, Japan\, etc. With 8 years of experience\, Catherine has developed a unique style that blends contemporary aesthetics with classic techniques. \n\n\n\nCatherine’s journey into photography began in 2016\, when she got her first Nikon DSLR camera. Her skills took off in 2020 when COVID-19 started\, allowing her to work remotely and giving her more time to dive into photography. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines\, including Photo Vogue\, 1x.com etc. \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not behind the camera\, Catherine enjoys reading\, teaching photography workshops and mentoring aspiring photographers. She believes in the power of photography to tell stories and evoke emotions\, and she is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of her craft.

SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) Theme - Motion with Judge Deborah Loeb Bohren
DESCRIPTION:The offspring of two photographers\, I’m convinced my passion for photography is imprinted on my DNA and I can’t remember when photography wasn’t a part of my life. \n\n\n\nFor me\, the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light. I wield my camera like a paintbrush and think of my work as visual alchemy: the transformation not of matter into gold but rather of light\, color and line into images. Minimalism\, abstraction\, multiple exposure and ICM are essential tools of my alchemy. These work in ways that are simultaneously controllable and unpredictable\, allowing me to challenge reality and capture a feeling or impression rather than the reality of what lies in front of my lens. Patience\, experimentation and the benevolence of the photography gods are also integral to my work. \n\n\n\nMy work is part of individual and corporate collections\, including the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center\, and has been exhibited across the US and internationally at New York’s Soho Photo Gallery\, the Sohn and Cousen Rose galleries in Massachusetts\, and at the Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable\, Kent\, among others.   \n\n\n\nwww.travelinglensphoto.com

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Fireworks & Old Town at Night
DESCRIPTION:Want to enjoy shooting fireworks without fighting crowds or heat?  This field trip will give you that opportunity.  Every Saturday through the end of the year there is a fireworks show at National Harbor.  The show\, which begins at 5:30 p.m.\, lasts 5-10 minutes\, and will give all levels of fireworks photographers a chance to get shots of the fireworks with the Capital Wheel and National Harbor in the background. We will photograph the fireworks from across the river at Jones Point Park.  After the show is over we will drive a mile up the road and meet at the northwest corner of King and S. Fairfax Streets\, where we’ll start our walk to photograph Old Town at night\, which will be decked out for the holidays.  \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, December 14 from 5:15 – 8:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, December 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. (without the fireworks\, meet in Old Town) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nJones Point Park \n\n\n\nJones Point Drive\, Alexandria\, VA \n\n\n\n(free parking: park as close to the water as possible; we will meet at the fishing pier visible from path underneath the Wilson Bridge next to the water’s edge) \n\n\n\nOld Town Alexandria \n\n\n\n(park at the Market Square garage at 108 N. Fairfax St. – $5 weekend flat fee – and walk out to the corner of King and S. Fairfax Streets; we will meet there) \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nFor the fireworks\, a 24-70mm or a 28-300 or similar lens will work well.  (No wide angle is needed given the distance we will be from the fireworks). Either will also work for the Old Town shots unless you want to shoot handheld\, in which case you should bring a prime with good glass. Tripods are necessary for the fireworks and encouraged for Old Town.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In-Person): The Illinois Forest Preserves with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:During the post-World War II era of the late 20th century\, the northern suburbs of Chicago saw dramatic development of residential and commercial construction. To preserve portions of the natural forest which originally covered the land\, the Illinois Forest Preserves were created by the various counties in the area.  As I grew up there\, the forest preserves always impressed me with their state of natural\, undeveloped character. Through the seasons\, the forest areas changed their colors in the fall\, were covered in winter snow\, were inundated with spring rain and provided a lush canopy of green in the summer months. When my parents moved to a retirement community near the Des Plaines River in 2008\, I began to photograph this portion of the preserves during my periodic visits. Over ten years\, I captured images of the preserves and the river in all states of weather and seasons.     \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when my dad converted a coal bin (we now had gas heat) to his darkroom.  However\, my interest really took off in college.  I’ve been a member of NVPS since 2018 having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with our grandson and his family.  My past work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork and LensWork’s “Seeing in Sixes”. I’ve been a Canon shooter forever – I still have my FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person): Journey to the Subcontinent of India with John Olsen
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, I traveled to India for the first time\, to celebrate my daughter and son-in-law’s wedding. My member’s gallery is a visual narrative of my journey to modern India\, one of the most diverse countries in the world\, reflected in its religions\, ethnicities\, and customs across a population of 1.4 billion people. My prints tell the story of the people I met\, the places I visited\, and the emotions that I experienced during my journey to the Subcontinent of India. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Life is a journey\, not a destination.” My photographic journey began almost 50 years ago. After meeting new friends\, who were photo enthusiasts\, including past NVPS President Fred Siskind\, and seeing an exhibit of Ansel Adams photographs\, I was hooked on photography. My first camera was an Olympus SLR. I shot 35mm b&w film and color slides\, and had my own darkroom. I have enjoyed all genres of photography including nature\, birds\, landscapes\, sports\, events\, travel\, and family portraits.  \n\n\n\nAs my family grew\, time available to persue photography became limited. After retiring from the federal Government in 2015\, I resumed my interest by joining the NVPS and the OLLI Photo Club (OPC). Along with fellow NVPS member\, Ed Marion\, I am a co-coordinator of the OPC which is a part of the Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University. Much thanks to all of the NVPS members who have been guest speakers at our OPC monthly meetings and partnered with the OPC to photograph the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics in 2023 and 2024.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In-Person) - Yellowstone 98 with Wayne Wolfersberger
DESCRIPTION:98% percent of the visitors to Yellowstone never see 98% of the park! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe average visitors spend two days visiting Yellowstone\, with all their time on roads connecting them to the big-name features such as Old Faithful\, Yellowstone Falls\, Mammoth Hot Springs and some other geyser basin features. They seldom stop to even view some other features along the way in their rush to get to the next “big thing”. They “hike the board walks around some of the geyser basins but little else in their rush to “see it all”. There is so much more to see and do in the worlds first national park that is 2.2 million acres of treasures. I will share some the “undiscovered gems” that are simply over looked. This will be from my perspective as a Yellowstone Ranger and as a photographer\, including boating\, hiking\, and even a little camping or sleeping on your boat docked at the public marina at the largest natural freshwater lake in the country. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWayne is an ecologist-naturalist\, educator\, and photographer with a master’s degree in education. Over his career\, he worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service\, the National Park Service\, and the Navy Photographic Center. He has spent 45 years in science education in public schools and universities. He has taught a variety of photography classes\, led photography tours\, and has presented educational nature photography programs in the Mid-Atlantic region\, the UK\, and Australia. He has received multiple awards from Natures Best\, NANPA\, and several other photography organizations. His photos have been published in a variety of media and appeared in fine art exhibits as well as stock around the globe. \n\n\n\nwww.waynewolfersberger.com

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Great Falls MD (South End)
DESCRIPTION:Great Falls is a DMV treasure and a favorite place for landscape photography. In November we will photograph the Potomac River and C&O Canal on the southeast end of the Maryland side of Great Falls.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will park in the (free) parking lots across from The Old Angler’s Inn and head over the Angler’s Footbridge and down to the shore of the Potomac River\, which at that point provides a beautiful wide view of the river and the shores beyond it. We will then walk northwest along the C&O Canal and take advantage of the landscape and wildlife photo ops that the canal provides.  We will make our way back toward the parking lot on the same path. For those who would like to get something to eat afterwards\, we will meet at Market on the Boulevard\, a deli 3.6 miles down the road from the parking lot.  \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday November 16 from 8 -11 a.m. (post-trip gathering at 11:15 a.m.) \n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, November 17 from 8-11 a.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nGreat Falls National Park \n\n\n\nStart at parking lot across from Old Angler’s Inn (10801 Macarthur Blvd\, Potomac\, MD) \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nA walkaround or landscape lens will work well. A wide angle lens (camera or phone) would be nice for river and footbridge shots. If you would also like to photograph birds on the canal\, you can bring a longer lens\, although the birds will be relatively close.     \n\n\n\nParking is free and there is no admission fee at this end of the park. There is an upper and lower parking lot across from Old Angler’s Inn\, and restrooms at the lower lot. We will meet by the restrooms.  \n\n\n\nThe walk down to canal and river is moderately steep and the paths are not paved\, so hiking footwear is recommended. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025 \n\n\n\nPhotographs courtesy of Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Long Exposure Photography with Kimxuan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Wikipedia:  Long-exposure\, time-exposure\, or slow-shutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring\, smearing\, or obscuring the moving elements. Kimxuan will also go over the technique on how to capture fireworks in a creative way by using the Long Exposure method. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKimxuan studied photography in college when the photography world was still using film and darkroom to process photos. Fast forward\, Kimxuan joined NVPS in 2019. She had received several Monthly Competition and Year End awards. SUMMARY:Program - (Zoom): Photographing in a Foreign CountryProgram with Frank Van Riper
DESCRIPTION:Frank will discuss photographing in a foreign country and include images made by him and his wife in Umbria\, Venice\, Paris\, England\, and Japan. Among other things\, Frank will discuss how he gets people to let him photograph their daily lives and activities\, the best times to shoot on the street\, why the most popular tourist attractions often are the worst venues for great photography—and  how to loosen someone up even when you don’t speak the language. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Van Riper is an award-winning documentary and fine art photographer\, journalist\, author and lecturer whose work has been published internationally.  \n\n\n\nHis photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery (Washington\, DC) as well as in the Portland Museum of Art (Portland\, Maine.) His 1998 book of photography and essays\, Down East Maine/A World Apart\, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the silver award for photography from the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington.  \n\n\n\nHis latest book is Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980\, which immediately became an Amazon bestseller. His previous book\, done in collaboration with his wife and professional partner Judith Goodman\, was Serenissima: Venice in Winter\, a coffee table collection of black and white photographs and essays\, published in 2008 both in the US and Italy.  Their next collaboration—and their first book in color–is The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria and its Ancient Neighbors. (Fall\, 2025) \n\n\n\nVan Riper was a member of the New York Daily News Washington Bureau for 20 years\, serving as White House correspondent\, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. He was a 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard. In 1982 he partnered with his wife in commercial and documentary photography. In 1992\, Van Riper became photography columnist of the Washington Post\, where his column\, “Talking Photography\,” appeared for 19 years. It now is now available at www.TalkingPhotography.com.  \n\n\n\nA popular teacher and lecturer\, Van Riper is on the faculty of PhotoWorks at Glen Echo Park\, Md.\, and has lectured and/or taught in the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program\, the Maine Photographic Workshops\, the University of Maine at Machias and at other colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Here Comes the Judge with Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Stan Bysshe will offer thoughts on selecting and processing images that you are considering for entry in competitions and illustrate those ideas by working on some anonymous images submitted by club members. \n\n\n\nLike most NVPS members\, Stan has entered countless photo competitions and has had numerous favorite images shot down by judges.  It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it.  But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo and what it was that caught your eye; did you successfully convey that vision to the viewer?   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you have an image that you would like Stan to anonymously review\, please send a RAW out-of-the camera file no later than October 1. A separate email with upload instructions will be sent to members.  Note that he might not be able to get to all the submitted images. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand-me-down Nikkormat.  But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated too underwater nature.  By 2010 it was time to hang up the scuba gear and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography.  Still nature remained a driving force behind his images.  Since joining the club\, Stan has “volunteered” for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, and Mentoring and is a past President.  For the past decade he has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska\, Yellowstone National Park\, New Mexico\, and Florida.

DESCRIPTION:Ginger will talk about her two trips to Sitka Alaska to photograph humpback whales practicing bubble netting to feed on the herring that gather along the coast of Baranof Island each year in March to spawn.  She will talk about the logistics of photographing the whales\, other wildlife opportunities in the area for that time of year\, the human fishing industry\, and the beautiful landscapes of the area. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBIO:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger joined NVPS in 2009 at a point in her life when she really needed to find a creative outlet.  She has been interested in photography since high school after receiving a Minolta SRT-101 for Christmas.  Her first DSLR was a Canon 6D that she still loves\, but for travel in particular the weight has become a problem.  Today she carries two Olympus mirrorless bodies\, the OMD mark 11 and the OM-1. \n\n\n\n“One of the first questions I always seem to get is ‘What kind of photography do you do?’    My answer is ‘all kinds’.  Any subject is fair game if it’s interesting to me.  That said\, and as much as I love all kinds of wildlife\, I just started seeking out animals as my subjects a few years ago…and I’m still not a bird photographer.  I greatly admire all my friends in NVPS who take such amazing wildlife shots.  I think it’s been seeing your images through the years that opened my up to giving it a try.  Now\, I’d be willing to go to Sitka every year to see the whales.”

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person) (Digital) Wildlife\, Landscape\, Macro: My Photo Journey with Nancy Galib
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been taking photographs for most of my life\, but much more so in the past 7 or so years.  I started out with a Kodak Instamatic camera when I was a teenager\, and moved on to a rangefinder\, and then an SLR during the film-only era.  But digital photography and post-production tools were game changers.  It’s so much easier to experiment without the expenses of getting rolls of film developed.  My photography really took off after a photo trip to Alaska in the winter of 2017\, when I learned about shooting raw files and post-processing with Lightroom and Photoshop. I love the creativity that it gives me to convey what I feel. I’ve taken several photography trips since then — to places like Yellowstone\, the Southwest\, and most recently Botswana.  Each trip brings new skills\, new ways of seeing the world around me\, and new friends.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy photography doesn’t yet have a particular style\, and I am not drawn to one particular genre. I see photography as a journey of learning\, seeing\, and connecting with the world around me. My photos encompass wildlife\, landscape\, macro\, abstract\, and everything in between.  The wildlife photos will be primarily of the incredible birds and animals I saw along the Chobe River and in the Okavango Delta last fall\, but will also include birds and animals a little closer to home.  I was captivated by the colors and patterns in Alaska and U.S. national parks\, and my landscape photos from these places will include both beautiful mountain scenery as well as the abstract patterns I saw around me.  Flowers and insects will make up most of the macro images\, many of which were taken in my neighborhood or in local parks.  \n\n\n\nI look forward to continuing this journey!

SUMMARY:Members’ Gallery - (In-Person) (Print):  The Fun of Handmade Books with Tana Ebbole
DESCRIPTION:We seldom think of making  our own photography books from scratch.  It is wonderful to be able to make a book with an online company and get back a lovely final product. \n\n\n\nBut leaning and making your own by hand is also fun and fascinating. It allows the photographer to have complete control over the entire process.  This opens many possibilities for various types and styles.  As well as having choices of the binding materials and designs.  Not to mention the paper used for the images to be displayed upon. \n\n\n\nI’m not an expert but have enjoyed taking classes and making several books.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGaetana (Tana) Ebbole\, an Arlingtonbased photographer\, seeks interesting flowers\, plants\, landscapes\, architecture and interior scenes to photograph.  She finds the solitude and peace of being outside in nature\, interesting architecture or working in her ad hoc studio help her to achieve total focus and a place of total enjoyment.  Her goal is to capture an image in such a way that others will be excited and touched as she was by what she saw in that moment. She finds the creative process of finding the scenes to capture through producing a printed image fascinating.  Her interests include landscapes\, flora\, rural and urban settings\, and scenes created in her ad hoc studio.   \n\n\n\nShe has been selected in juried national\, regional and local competitions and is a member of NVPS and the Art League’s Gallery 75. \n\n\n\nAll images are printed with archival ink on archival paper. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWebsite: Tanaebbolephotography.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram: TanaEbbole

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) - Bring Your Camera and Prints
DESCRIPTION:Mixing things up a bit\, our regular Education and Training meeting on October 8 will be an in-person\, “Bring Your Camera and Prints” meeting at the firehouse.  Let’s do shots! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNow that you have printed your best images for competition\, we will start with a 10-minute presentation on matting by Bob and Willa Friedman.  After that\, it is all hands-on (deck)!  We will have mat cutters\, so bring your pints and mat board and get those prints matted and ready for competition. \n\n\n\nWe will also have several stations set up to encourage you to try something different with your camera\, including bringing out the texture in common items (e.g.\, fossils\, corks\, fabrics\, and shells) and photographing water in motion.  If you have something that you think others in the club might enjoy photographing\, please bring it!  We will have lights\, but bring your flash too\, as it may come in handy. \n\n\n\nNotes: \n\n\n\nDuring the 5th Tuesday Education and Training meeting on October 29\, Stan Bysshe will offer thoughts on selecting and processing images that you are considering for entry in competitions and illustrate those ideas by working on some anonymous images submitted by club members.  If you have an image that you would like Stan to anonymously review\, please send a RAW out-of-the camera file no later than October 1.  A separate email with instructions will be sent to members. Note that he might not be able to get to all the submitted images.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: The Old Town Farmers' Market
DESCRIPTION:The Old Town Farmers’ Market held in front of city hall is the oldest farmers’ market held continuously at one site in the country.  The market as well as the block around City Hall offers lots of photographic opportunities for the street and urban photographer.  Vendors will be tending to their stalls\, shoppers will be scrutinizing the wares\, and others will be out for a stroll making this area a fun and target rich environment.  There’s even more to see as you walk down King Street to the waterfront. \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the South East corner of the market (intersection of King St. and N.Fairfax St.) for our usual meet and greet.  We’ll explore the area around the market for a bit and then take a break at a nearby restaurant\, la Madeleine (one block to the West).  Once rested\, you’ll have a choice between venturing down to the waterfront or staying around the market.  Feel free to join the trek or stay as long as you like. \n\n\n\nOur club had a wonderful time when we last attended the market back in September 2019. \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/Old-Town-Alexandria-Sep-2019 \n\n\n\nWhere:301 King St.\, Alexandria\, VA \n\n\n\nFree underground parking is available at the Market Square Garage until 12:30pm.  Access the garage at 108 N. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In-Person) - Kyoto Gardens: Tips for Fall Foliage Photography with Don Smith
DESCRIPTION:Don Smith spent his first 18 years in Omaha but has since lived in most parts of the United States and several countries in Asia and Europe. He was a journalist and taught Japanese and Korean history before taking a government job that allowed plenty of travel (and photography) opportunities. Mr. Smith first picked up a camera in grade school and dabbled in picture-taking over the years but gradually got serious about photography after buying his first DSLR in Bangkok in about 2004. He has been to Kyoto several times before but last year was his first chance to visit with a decent camera (and without small children). Don and his wife\, Tomoco\, will be heading far west into retirement in 2025. \n\n\n\nDon Smith will share suggestions on local travel and photography logistics\, and discuss his favorite autumn gardens based on a trip to Kyoto he made November 23 – December 7 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMr. Smith was a Canon shooter until he found his DSLR getting heavier every year and switched to the mirrorless Fujifilm system\, and he now shoots an XH-2. He loves travel photography\, landscapes\, and everything interesting. He has benefited tremendously from the education and fellowship that NVPS offers since joining the club in 2014. He has managed to lose his files from China and Australia\, but a sampling of his work from East\, South\, and Southeast Asia; Western\, Central\, and Eastern Europe; Israel; and North America is available at https://donsmith.smugmug.com/.
