SUMMARY:Education & Training (In Person): A Photographic Exploration of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:The spectacular Cliffs of Moher – Fran Bastress\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nFive NVPS members traveled to Ireland in 2024 to photograph its landscapes\, waterscapes\, cities\, ancient and sacred sites\, and—for some of them—the land of their ancestors: Jim & Jerri McDermott\, Mike Whalen\, Fran Bastress\, Ginger Werz-Petricka. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThese members will share information in the presentation about their experiences\, including major expenses\, camera gear\, and pros and cons of their styles of travel. Their diverse travel styles included: \n\n\n\n\na photo trip by bus with a professional photographer\, \n\n\n\na self-guided driving tour\, and\n\n\n\na nationally known tour company trip by bus.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThey covered much of Ireland between them\, and their photos have been compiled into a slideshow representing the best of the Emerald Isle. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are planning to travel to either Ireland or Northern Ireland\, this presentation should help you decide which areas to visit\, because each of its chapters represents photos from the six different geographical regions. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Photographers And Their BIO’s:\n\n\n\nJim and Jerri \n\n\n\nJim and Jerri McDermottJerri and Jim McDermott have been members of NVPS since (at least!) 2010\, and credit the club and its members for opportunities to grow as photographers and have a lot of fun doing that. Jim has served in a number of volunteer positions for the club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike\n\n\n\nMike WhalenMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. He joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. His photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel\, and abstract photography. He currently uses Sony equipment and post-processes with Lightroom\, Photoshop and Topaz Labs products. For this trip he took a Sony a6700 APS-C camera and 3 lenses: 18-50mm f/2.8; 10-18mm 2.8; and a 70-200mm f4. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFran\n\n\n\nFran BastressFran has been a member of NVPS since 2009\, served on its board for two years\, and placed in various competitions\, including at Nature Visions where she received the 2018 People’s Choice Award in Photo Art. In recent years she has been creating large bound photo books\, including A Journey in Ireland: Scenes from the Emerald Isle. Although devoted to Canon cameras for years\, she converted to the OM-1 in 2022. For post-processing\, Fran uses Lightroom and Photoshop\, along with Topaz and Nik plugins. She credits NVPS for her development as a photographer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger\n\n\n\nGinger Werz-PetrickaGinger joined NVPS in 2009 at a point in her life when she really needed to find a creative outlet.  She has been interested in photography since high school after receiving a Minolta SRT-101 for Christmas.  Her first DSLR was a Canon 6D that she still loves\, but for travel in particular the weight has become a problem.  Today she carries two Olympus mirrorless bodies\, the OMD mark 11 and the OM-1. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Few Of Their Images :\n\n\n\n\nKylemore Abbey – Co. DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nNancy will discuss her trips to see the aurora borealis\, and what she learned on each one.  The presentation will include information on gear\, camera settings\, and editing aurora photos.  And a little science from a layperson’s perspective. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNancy Galib has been a member of NVPS since 2021. She has been taking photographs for most of her life\, but much more so in the past seven or so years. She started out with a Kodak Instamatic camera when she was a teenager\, moved on to a rangefinder\, and then an SLR during the film–only era. But digital photography and post–production tools  were game changers. It’s so much easier to experiment without the expense of getting rolls of film developed. Her photography really took off after a photo trip to Alaska in the winter of 2017 when she learned about shooting raw files and post–processing with Lightroom and Photoshop. She loves the creativity that it gives her to convey what she feels. Nancy has taken several photography trips since then to places like Yellowstone\, the Southwest\, and most recently\, Botswana. Each trip brings new skills\, new ways of seeing the world around her\, and new friends. Her photography doesn’t yet have a particular style\, and she is not drawn to one particular genre. She sees photography as a journey of learning\, seeing\, and connecting with the world around her.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Digital\, In Person) - iPhone Photography:  The Things You See! with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith his iPhones\, Greg Smith has often captured spur-of-the-moment events\, but also taken landscapes\, portraits\, and anything else that is picture worthy.  And quite a bit that is not.  Greg has found that often the iPhone’s camera settings are excellent as far as the image capture and has used native and Lightroom apps for editing his pictures.  With the iPhone Pro model\, he recently learned from NVPS members that he could even take RAW photos. \n\n\n\nGreg enjoys photographing whatever he happens upon\, primarily birds and landscapes\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity. As he and Gitta travel around the country in their RV trailer\, he has found that taking a quick iPhone picture from the same vantage point as the pictures they took with their Nikons\, Greg is able to capture the location and have it on a map\, making remembering where they took all the pictures much easier.  They have taken multiple trips to Denver\, the Grand Tetons\, Yellowstone\, and Acadia National Parks\, lots of State Parks\, and many stops in between and along the way.  Yes\, you can use the GPS function with your camera\, but Greg thinks the iPhone has made it even easier. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Smith became interested in photography from an early age when watching his father\, taking many pictures throughout their many family travels.  His dad always considered angles and framed the subjects when he could\, describing what and why as he did so.  Greg got his first SLR\, a Minolta\, prior to deploying to the Mediterranean with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures. However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy that he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from three blocks away to get it all in!  Many years of photography have followed.  Greg shoots primarily with his Nikon D750\, but he has a great camera in his pocket all the time – his iPhone!

SUMMARY:Members Gallery (Prints) (In Person):  In Search of Big Cats with Don Little
DESCRIPTION:Black Leopard by Don Little\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThere is something compelling about big cats. It is easy to be drawn in by their gaze. Their majestic appearance and nature are awe-inspiring\, and it is thrilling to see and try to capture moments of as they live their lives hunting\, playing and resting.  Don Little undertook a somewhat unpredictable journey last year to try and find and photograph one particular leopard\, a melanistic (black) leopard in Kenya.  Black leopards are quite rare and this one leopard is really the only one in Africa that you may have a chance to photograph as her home range overlaps with a camp in Laikipia and she is less shy than others. While Don only had a few brief encounters with her (in mostly low light…)\, it was an amazing experience. As with many wild animals\, you are often dealing with early morning or evening low light and trying to balance shutter speed\, aperture and ISO for the best quality photos. Every encounter with a big cat is thrilling\, being able to capture a few images is a plus. Don is looking forward to the next opportunity to see these amazing creatures in the wild again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon Little\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nDon began his photography journey in high school with an old twin reflex of his Dad’s. His photography grew largely from his travels exploring other counties and love of nature. Starting mostly with travel and landscapes and in recent years he has shifted more to wildlife. He joined NVPS a few years ago looking for kindred spirits and hoping to improve his photographic results beyond the “postcard” photos of the past. \n\n\n\nA goal has emerged in recent years to photograph many of the big cats in the wild. He has managed to get 5 of the top 7 big cats in recent years (tigers\, lions\, jaguars\, pumas and leopards). The sixth\, Cheetahs\, should be an easy fix with the right Africa trip. While the seventh\, snow leopards\, will take a bit more of an effort and luck… \n\n\n\nAdditional Photos by Don Little:\n\n\n\n\nKanha Tiger\n\n\n\nPantanal Jaguar\n\n\n\nPatagonia Puma

DESCRIPTION:Greg Holden is a photographer from Longmont\, Cowho uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. He enjoys creative photos of little scenes often overlooked by others rather than postcard landscapes. Although he won’t pass by a chance to photograph a beautiful landscape or a tranquil sunset\, he’d rather be exploring abandoned places and capturing the details of the layers of paint and rust on a discarded automobile.   \n\n\n\nGreg enjoys searching used bookstores for photo collections and has over 180 books (as of Oct 2023) on and about photography.  He finds inspiration from master photographers and a wide range of subjects\, such as: the close-up beach studies by Minor White\, the early portraiture of Steichen and Stieglitz\, and street scenes by Andre Kertesz.  He enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography and speaks at camera clubs near his home in the greater Denver area\, but also speaks and judges virtually to clubs across the US. You can see Greg’s work on his website imagesunderfoot.com

DESCRIPTION:The final review for group one of the Portfolio Project will be held with Frank Van Riper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Van Riper is an award-winning documentary and fine art photographer\, journalist\, author and lecturer whose work has been published internationally.  \n\n\n\nHis photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery (Washington\, DC) as well as in the Portland Museum of Art (Portland\, Maine.) His 1998 book of photography and essays\, Down East Maine/A World Apart\, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the silver award for photography from the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington.  \n\n\n\nHis latest book is Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980\, which immediately became an Amazon bestseller. His previous book\, done in collaboration with his wife and professional partner Judith Goodman\, was Serenissima: Venice in Winter\, a coffee table collection of black and white photographs and essays\, published in 2008 both in the US and Italy.  Their next collaboration—and their first book in color–is The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria and its Ancient Neighbors. (Fall\, 2025) \n\n\n\nVan Riper was a member of the New York Daily News Washington Bureau for 20 years\, serving as White House correspondent\, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. He was a 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard. In 1982 he partnered with his wife in commercial and documentary photography. In 1992\, Van Riper became photography columnist of the Washington Post\, where his column\, “Talking Photography\,” appeared for 19 years. DESCRIPTION:Oftentimes photographers spend much time forcing their scenes to fit the rules (which yields technically “perfect” but perhaps boring photographs) rather than arranging the subject matter based on emotional responses and human perceptions. This insightful and educational presentation\, outdoor photographer/writer Colleen Miniuk goes beyond reviewing the predominant composition rules and shares how we can leverage the reasoning behind human perception (not rules!) to help elicit specific responses from our viewers. Hear how subject matter placement\, the use of different types of lines\, relationships between shapes\, and other visual language help us arrange our scenes to communicate meaning and messages more effectively with our audiences. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColleen Miniuk is a corporate-America-escapee turned full-time freelance outdoor photographer\, author\, educator\, and motivational speaker from Chandler\, AZ. Through her work\, she aims to inspire adventures in the Great Outdoors and encourage others to live their most fulfilling life\, “the big Life with a capital L\,” with or without a camera in hand. Her work has graced the pages of publications such as National Geographic\, Arizona Highways\, AAA Via\, On Landscape\, National Parks Traveler\, and a broad variety of other outlets. We’ll discuss how to plan your trip and how to think creatively about the opportunities that abound there. \n\n\n\nDavid Lattanzi\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nDavid Lattanzi got into photography 25 years ago after finding his mother’s old Canon AE-1\, primarily to impress his girlfriend. His love of photography has lasted a lot longer than that relationship. His photographic journey started with traditional black and white darkroom processes that still influence the way he shoots today. He has a love of both nature and travel photography\, often in combination. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world with his camera\, having visited 50 states\, 5 continents\, and more countries than he can count. He counts Fay Godwin\, Bruce Percy\, and Clyde Butcher among the many photographers that have inspired him over the years. He has been a member of NVPS since 2018. DESCRIPTION:Portrait By Benita Mayo\n\n\n\nColena’s passion for photography began in high school when a family friend gave her a film camera. She quickly became the go-to photographer for family gatherings. In 2003\, she upgraded to her first digital camera\, the Nikon Coolpix E4300. Over the years\, she used several Nikon digital SLRs\, including the D90 and D7100. Thirteen years later\, seeking a lighter camera for a cruise\, Colena purchased a Fujifilm X-E2 and became an immediate fan. Since then\, she’s added the Fujifilm X-T2\, X-T5\, and X-T30 to her collection and sold her Nikon gear. \n\n\n\nColena’s main passion lies in capturing people in various settings. Over time\, her interests have also grown to include abstract\, macro\, and nature photography. Her work has been featured in juried exhibitions such as the Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions and the Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibit. \n\n\n\nColena became a member of NVPS in February 2012 and has held various roles\, including coordinator for the Members’ Gallery\, the Ask Me A Question Table\, and Board Secretary/Historian. She credits the Club with fostering her ongoing growth and passion for the art and craft of photography. As a volunteer photographer\, Colena has contributed her skills to organizations such as the Professional Woman’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, the Library of Congress National Book Festival\, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, and Honor Flight. In 2016\, the Reston Association recognized her with the Adult Volunteer Group of the Year Award. For the past twenty years\, she has also been actively involved in the Photography Ministry at Heritage Fellowship Church. \n\n\n\nFor the March Members’ Virtual Gallery\, Colena will showcase images captured during a Street Photography workshop in Cuba. One of the featured images\, titled “Reflection\,” was published in CubaSeen Issue 09\, a bilingual art zine that highlights works by both Cuban and American artists.

DESCRIPTION:Ben Greenberg is a lifelong resident of Virginia and the cities of Richmond and Charlottesville. His passion for photography began in 1970 with the birth of his first son and for 55 years he has pursued his commitment to capturing images from the natural world in Virginia and 20 other states. \n\n\n\nBen’s carefully crafted landscape photographs have won local and national awards and competitions including the international grand prize of Kodak’s newspaper competition\, KINSA. His photographs have been exhibited in numerous individual and group shows. His landscape and wildlife images are currently represented in several Virginia galleries and shops.  \n\n\n\nBen takes great pride in creating photographic images of the highest quality in color and black and white. He uses the best of traditional and digital technology in creating and printing his photographs. His photographic prints and all materials used in their presentation meet the highest archival quality standards. \n\n\n\nBen thoroughly enjoys teaching classes and workshops and mentoring individuals. He is also very active in making presentations of his landscape and wildlife images to groups\, including camera clubs. His presentations include emphasis on Virginia images\, panoramic photography\, as well as his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. \n\n\n\nIn March 2014 Ben published his first photography book\, Natural Virginia.  A coffee table size book (10×17\, 240 pages and 122 images)\, Natural Virginia features panoramic color landscape and wildlife photographs from throughout the state\, celebrating its natural beauty and the need for its preservation. DESCRIPTION:During this review the portfolio co–chairs\, Ginger Werz–Petrick\, Willa Friedman\,and Fred Krebs\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement. \n\n\n\nSelf–analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. The Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 11. Final reviews will be April 8 for the first group and May 20 for the second group.

The fear of missing a prized image because a particular camera\, lens\, or even a tripod was left behind lingers in the back of our minds.  \n\n\n\nBut bringing too much stuff creates its own issues. Dragging large\, unwieldy luggage through airport terminals\, loading it in and out of shuttles\, and even getting it all from the curb to the hotel room can require herculean patience. \n\n\n\nThere is a middle ground. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum (In-Person): Brief Introduction to Infrared Photography with George Hogeman
DESCRIPTION:George was inspired by a colleague to take up infrared photography in 2017 while they were both in India. They took black & images of Indian landmarks and scenery.  Such images feature dark skies and bright trees and shrubs. Unseen detail comes out of clouds.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorge will demonstrate how infrared images may be created with a regular camera or even a cell phone using a simple infrared filter.  The next step up is using a converted camera with an internal infrared filter.  In a converted camera\, the internal filter that blocks infrared light which would otherwise blur the image and is replaced by a new filter that allows infrared light as well as part of the visible spectrum to pass to the sensor.  One advantage of a converted camera with an internal filter is that one can use a variety of lenses without worrying about external filters.  \n\n\n\nA full spectrum conversion entails removing the internal infrared filter without replacing it.  Instead one must use an external filter to block a portion of the visible spectrum.  Such images look bizarre as if from another planet\, but a red-blue channel swap using Photoshop or other software can make the colors more aesthetically pleasing. George will demonstrate making a such a channel swap. Yet other filters such as a chrome IR filter can make pleasing images without requiring a channel swap.  \n\n\n\nMost flexible is a full spectrum conversion which requires using one of a variety of external filters. That can be limiting in that your choice of lens may be limited by the availability of filters to fit different lenses.  \n\n\n\nGeorge will bring in a variety of converted camera and filters and has a variety of images to share.

DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham\n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nJudy has been fortunate to travel to some amazing places in her pursuit of landscape photography\, and occasionally she transforms into a wildlife photographer. Her member’s gallery consists of images from Norway\, New England\, Isle of Skye in Scotland\, the Northwest\, Caddo Lake in Texas\, and the Badlands in South Dakota and Utah. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life.  She retired March 1\, 2018 after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 and has served in numerous positions\, including as President. Her goal for joining was to meet local photographers\, do more local photography\, and learn more about the art of photography. Her goals have been met 10 times over! \n\n\n\nJudy loves to travel and is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in more recent years she has expanded her travel to even include some very occasional wildlife photography. \n\n\n\nJudy currently shoots with a Canon R5 mirrorless system. \n\n\n\nAs for the future\, she has several trips planned\, including her 5th trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon\, Ireland\, Slovenia\, Italy and Hawaii.

DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo themes\, similar from a certain perspective — though some may call theater mere artifice\, it also serves as our meager attempt to grasp the nature of Nature. And as the photographer attempts to capture the natural beauty of a perched bird or a lone tree or a rippling river reflection\, he also attempts to capture the actor’s\, choreographer’s and scene designer’s representation of human nature.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nGeorge Bradshaw\n\n\n\nGeorge Bradshaw inherited a photo gene from his father who freelanced in the ‘30s and ‘40s. But the gene did not express itself until 2015 when\, in retirement\, he bought a Canon 70D; and has been having a blast with photography ever since. George caught the bug to photograph theatrical performances during an OLLI class at George Mason University\, where he observed actors “getting into character” at a moment’s notice\, transitioning to unmistakably separate personae – George wanted to capture these otherwise fleeting moments of nature and art. \n\n\n\nIn 2018 George joined the NVPS and now volunteers on the editorial staff. He especially enjoys the NVPS Education & Training programs\, which\, along with all the other NVPS activities\, continually drive him forward to “see” his world and discover meaningful compositions.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Washington DC’s National Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:NVPS February 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\nWashington DC’s National Cathedral is a great destination at any time of year.  The building’s Gothic revival architecture and nearby garden offer a variety of subjects.  On a sunny morning in the Winter\, when the sun is low in the sky\, the cathedral’s nave and arcade light up in a dazzling array of colors.  The South arcade will be the most brilliant in the early morning.  The North arcade doesn’t get as much light\, but the other sides more than make up for that.  You will also find the rose windows light up over the North\, South\, and West entrances.  The light shining through the stained glass windows lasts well into the early afternoon and is constantly moving. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet on a sunny Saturday morning to tour the facility.  After paying our admission\, we’ll explore the nave\, high altar\, and Southern arcade where most of the light will shine.  Our group will hunt down compositions for a few hours and then take a break at the Open City at the National Cathedral cafe (https://www.opencitycathedraldc.com/).  Inside\, we can relax and enjoy a warm beverage or snack as we chat and share what we’ve  witnessed.  (Be sure to keep your ticket stub for re-entry.) \n\n\n\nAs this is a working church\, please be respectful to others who may be there on business. Shy your camera away from parishioners to respect their privacy. Sometimes\, the cathedral offers a noontime service. If there is a 30-45 minute service and you are in the nave\, you may be asked to stop taking pictures.  This is normal. Try exploring the crypt downstairs. Take the elevator up to explore the South and North towers.  Explore the architecture outside\, or have a beverage or snack at the cafe. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGeneral Admission tickets cost $15 if purchased in advance and $18 if purchased onsite. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement. \n\n\n\nSelf–analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. The Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 11. Final reviews will be April 8 for the first group and May 20 for the second group.

DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nThere is something deceptively simple about the creation of a diptych: just put any two photographs next to each other. Add a third photograph and you can call it a triptych. But is that all there is? If you take one photograph and cut it into three parts and present it together\, is that a triptych? What’s happening for the viewer when they are presented with multiple photographs that they are asked to digest all at once? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation Kai picks apart the photo-to-photo dynamics that can be used in making compelling multiples. He shows how you can explore themes\, tell stories\, and present a visually cohesive narrative in a diptych or triptych. Grounded in the visual language of historical religious art\, the contemporary photographer can express symbolic relationships in their work that are not possible in a single photograph.Following this talk you will want to explore your own archive to create new sophisticated pairings–even from different bodies of work. In addition to helping you think in multiples\, these techniques are useful when editing and sequencing photographs for an exhibition or book. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nKai McBride\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKai McBride is a photographer\, teacher\, musician\, and maker based in Santa Fe\, NM. After receiving his MFA in Visual Arts in 2008 he has been teaching photography courses at the College and University level\, including ten years at Columbia University in New York. Since relocating to Santa Fe\, Kai splits his time between teaching online photography courses for StrudelMediaLive and building and expanding his off-grid cabin on the Glorieta Mesa. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening of tips\, tricks\, and photography as Jeff Hancock shares his love for transportation options enjoyed by John Candy and Steve Martin in the 1987 comedy.  Don’t worry\, you won’t miss any holidays with your family as we visit airshows\, train museums\, drift events\, and more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeff Hancock has been a detachable lens photographer since 1987.  His first professional gig was for a Surfer in Hawaii who paid him $20 for a roll of film and he’s been underpaid ever since.  He’s now the official photographer for the Office of Historic Alexandria\, The Mike O’Meara Show Podcast\, Die Laughing Productions\, and Dangerboy\, a rock and roll cover band.   \n\n\n\nNone of this pays enough for him to quit his day job in Data Visualization.   He photographs everything in front of him that looks interesting and sometimes seeks out interesting things to stand in front of to make photographs. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person): Historic Cape May\, New Jersey with Janice Kane
DESCRIPTION:Cape May\, New Jersey is a quaint\, historic town located at the southern tip of New Jersey.  It was founded in 1609\, originallyas hunting grounds. It soon became a hub for the East Coast whaling industry. In 1761\, it became the first seashore resort in our country.  After a fire swept through the town in the late 1800’s\, new buildings were constructed in the “modern” Victorian Style.  It is those homes that are the center of this presentation. Preservation efforts have allowed Cape May to retain much of the architecture constructed during that time and that has resulted in its present-day charm. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice and her husband Jake have three daughters and three grandchildren.  Her daughters and grandchildren are her favorite subjects to photograph! \n\n\n\nHailing from a large Philly family\, Janice loved to take photos of their many family events.  She especially enjoyed taking family photos at the beach\, particularly a small town just North of Cape May.  When comparing her images to others she had seen\, Janice realized she needed to learn more about her camera\, photo composition\, and editing. Upon retirement\, she finally had more time to dedicate to improving her photography.  Her education began with taking an Introduction to Photography course at Northern Virginia Community College. She also tookseminars from local photography centers along with reviewing online tutorials.  All came up short in addressing Janice’s growing interest and desire to improve.  By searching the internet for photography clubs\, Janice learned of NVPS.  Janice became a member of NVPS in January of 2019. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, Janice signed up for the mentorship program.  Shesigned up for the portfolio project and attended as many field trips as possible.  Each provided much-needed guidance in the various aspects of photography. These activities also allowed her to interact with very knowledgeable members from whomshe continues to learn. \n\n\n\nShooting family functions and portraits continues to be her main focus.  As a beach lover\, she particularly enjoys taking surfers\, boaters\, and water fowl.

Life here unfolds with a calm simplicity\, where daily activities bring contentment and joy. The images in this presentation are chosen to convey the uniqueness of this “Simply Beautiful” country\, as seen through the photographer’s lens. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nDidem Lenz is a photography enthusiast whose journey began in 2005 at a photography workshop in Paris\, France. There\, she acquired basic photography skills and an introduction to stock photography while exploring Paris with fellow photographers. Inspired by the experience\, she purchased her first SLR camera and joined iStock as a contributing stock photographer. Since 2022\, Didem has been a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, continuing to hone her skills and share her photographic vision.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: U.S. Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:NVPS January 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn January\, NVPS will visit the tropical conditions inside the U.S. Botanical Garden located at the foot of Capital Hill on Independence Ave.  Exhibits at the Garden range from roses to orchids\, the rain forest of the Mid-Atlantic\, endangered plants and the latest in home gardening. The indoor galleries display flora of the jungle\, desert and primeval settings. This diversity of form and color will provide outstanding photographic opportunities.  Admission is free. \n\n\n\nThe Botanical Garden has a photographic policy which prohibits the use of tripods unless you have a permit.  There are a limited number of tripod permits available.  If you plan to use one\, you must get prior approval by contacting Victoria Gesell at victoria.gesell@aoc.gov.  Permit reservations must be requested at least one week in advance.  Permits on the day of our trip may not be available\, but check with the visitor’s desk for approval. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.usbg.gov/visit/photography-and-art-policy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Garden entrance at the opening time of 9:45 AM for a short meet and greet before the Garden opens at 10am.  We’ll take images of the plants and scenery inside the Garden for a couple of hours and then take a break.  Across the street at the Smithsonian American Indian Museum is the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe.  We’ll meet there at 12:30pm for some coffee and snacks. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n• Bring your favorite close up or macro lens.  A 24-70mm will also be useful for indoor shots.  Be mindful that the Garden is a popular destination in the Winter so bring your patience as well.   \n\n\n\n• The Garden maintains high humidity in some areas and mists the plants with water.  This leaves the plants wet and shiny.  You can cut the shine and pop the colors if you remember to bring your polarizer. \n\n\n\n• Be mindful when transitioning between exhibits.  Bring your microfiber cloth or official NVPS spud to help keep your lens free of fog. \n\n\n\n• Use of a tripod requires a permit.  See above. \n\n\n\nWhen:  Saturday\, January 25\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm  \n\n\n\nSunday\, January 26\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm (in case of bad weather) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet at 9:45am outside the Garden’s entrance facing The Mall / Maryland Avenue SW.   \n\n\n\nThe US Botanic Garden does not have any official parking available.  Parking on Maryland Avenue SW is restricted\, especially if Congress is in session.  You will find metered street parking in the area\, including across Independence Ave.  Metro is great alternative.  The Orange\, Blue\, and Silver lines will all take you to Federal Center SW which is a two block walk on Third Street NW\, South of the Garden. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025

DESCRIPTION:Mary Louise is founder and owner of Bella Vista Photography in Raleigh\, NC. For over 25 years\, Mary Louise has specialized in photography from locations across the U.S. and throughout the world. Her favorite subject matter includes country landscapes\, nature close-ups\, interesting architectural details and abstracts. She draws inspiration from a variety of visual arts to produce photographs often described as “painterly”. Her photographs are about intriguing juxtapositions of vibrant colors\, contrasting tones\, distinctive shapes\, and unique textures. Her ambition is to incorporate the beauty of painting in the clarity of photography. \n\n\n\nTrained in the use of both 4×5 and 35mm cameras\, today Mary Louise shoots with full-frame DSLR cameras\, producing photographs in color and black and white. She studied photography through the University of California\, Berkeley and Santa Cruz extension programs\, and the Washington School of Photography. She is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association. She is also a juried member of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen where in 2020 she was awarded with the distinction of “Master Artisan in Fine Art Photography” by a jury panel\, in recognition of achievement in the three benchmarks of excellence in craftsmanship\, resolved design and unique voice. Her fine art photography is in private\, university and corporate collections in over 40 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows\, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars\, magazines\, books and websites including various projects with National Geographic maps. \n\n\n\nMary Louise is a regular speaker and competition judge for photography clubs in the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic region. In addition\, she has spoken at photography conferences such as the annual Nature Visions Photo Expo in Northern Virginia and the Florida Camera Club Council annual meeting in Ft. Meyers\, Florida. Each element in the photograph works together to evoke a sense of story\, inviting the viewer to interpret and engage with the subject’s experiences or emotions. In my presentation\, I will share insights from my experiences photographing a diverse range of individuals\, illustrating how to achieve exceptional results through a step-by-step approach. A key focus will be on the strategic use of props–such as vintage accessories\, musical instruments\, or personal artifacts–to add depth and context to portraits\, thereby enriching the storytelling aspect of the images. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nCatherine Wang is an International award-winning photographer based in DMV area\, specializing in portrait\, still life\, architecture\, and dance photography. Her work was also exhibited in many countries\, such as UK\, Switzerland\, Canada\, Germany\, Japan\, etc. With 8 years of experience\, Catherine has developed a unique style that blends contemporary aesthetics with classic techniques. \n\n\n\nCatherine’s journey into photography began in 2016\, when she got her first Nikon DSLR camera. Her skills took off in 2020 when COVID-19 started\, allowing her to work remotely and giving her more time to dive into photography. DESCRIPTION:The offspring of two photographers\, I’m convinced my passion for photography is imprinted on my DNA and I can’t remember when photography wasn’t a part of my life. \n\n\n\nFor me\, the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light. I wield my camera like a paintbrush and think of my work as visual alchemy: the transformation not of matter into gold but rather of light\, color and line into images. Minimalism\, abstraction\, multiple exposure and ICM are essential tools of my alchemy. These work in ways that are simultaneously controllable and unpredictable\, allowing me to challenge reality and capture a feeling or impression rather than the reality of what lies in front of my lens.
