SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Wabi Sabi with Lisa Cuchara
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThis program will explore the beauty of imperfect and/or unconventional subjects. As nature photographers we often seek out the flowers\, leaves and such that are perfect\, with no blemishes or defects. This program highlights subjects that are not perfect\, such as flowers that have character\, double headed flowers\, decaying fall leaves\, the deformed coneflower that stands out as flawed and hence different and beautiful\, rust as it creates abstract patterns amidst the decay\, etc. We will also explore the concept of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of everyday life\, things that might be overlooked. As purveyors of rust and decay we appreciate the perseverance and beauty of “life after humans” as cars and equipment falls apart and succumbs to oxidation and decay. Wabi-Sabi teaches us to find beauty in everyday life. It is a kind of anti-aesthetic\, an alternative to the dominating discriminatory ideas we hold about beauty. “Wabi means a beauty of elegant imperfection. Sabi means aloneness. Together\, they suggest the beauty of ‘the withered\, weathered\, tarnished\, scarred\, intimate\, coarse\, earthly\, evanescent\, tentative\, ephemeral.’ ~ Crispin Sartwell\, Six Names of Beauty. It is a way of honoring that everything is impermanent\, and we are always in a state of both becoming and falling away. It is used to describe a particular philosophy that beauty can be found in the old\, the everyday\, the imperfect. Wabi Sabi applies to more than nature and the seasons of change and decay\, but it also to the “Life after Humans” arena or UrbEx (urban exploration). As a side note\, the term Wabi Sabi can also be part of the social movement of embracing imperfection of your physical traits as a human being\, especially with respect to self-perception and celebrating imperfection in a society that encourages people to be perfect and pressures people to be flawless.  \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisa Cuchara\, PhD — OM SYSTEM Ambassador\, Seeker of Light\, Time\, Pixels\, and Creativity. In a world that rushes by in blinks and heartbeats\, Lisa Cuchara slows time with her lens. A Master Craftsman\, a Master of Artistry\, and a Master of Photography (PPA)\, she weaves wonder from pixels and light\, balancing science and soul as only a true alchemist of imagery can. With a heart tuned to nature’s quiet chorus\, Lisa sees beyond the obvious — catching the iridescent flutter of a hummingbird’s wing\, the secret stillness of dew-kissed flowers\, the noble decay of forgotten places. Birds and blossoms\, rusty relics\, frogs with stories in their eyes — all become muses for her storytelling soul. Whether in the hush of a forest or the echo of an abandoned space\, she doesn’t just catpure photographs of what things looks like — she captures what they feels like. A fieldwork sage and a digital darkroom poet\, Lisa transforms ordinary moments into storytelling landscapes. Photography\, for her\, is mindfulness in motion — a way to inhale the world slowly and exhale its beauty through art. Her eyes catch what others miss; her camera remembers what time forgets.Alongside her husband Tom\, a fellow kindred creative spirit she met through photography\, Lisa co-runs a studio sanctuary in Hamden\, CT. Together they teach light painting\, macro\, still life\, flowers\, and the magic of post-processing — blending technique with imagination\, offering not just instruction but inspiration. Their work has graced galleries\, calendars\, magazines like Wild Bird\, ABA Birding magazine\, Birder’s World\, and Adirondack Life\, and even the cover of a novel. Their books — Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things and The Frog Whisperer — celebrate both texture and tenderness in photography\, urging readers to see the world as a canvas of marvels. Lisa and Tom are tireless educators and generous mentors\, presenting across the globe in person and online. Their motto — “Creativity is contagious\, pass it on” — speaks to their mission to spark joy\, curiosity\, and vision in others. Subscribe to their YouTube channel\, sign up for photo tips and photo event announcements\, and explore more offerings at www.LisaTom.Photos. So whether you’re looking to capture the shimmer of a dragonfly’s wing\, the fleeting movement of a bird catching a fish\, or master the mysteries of light and shadow\, Lisa welcomes you to a journey where creativity blooms and pixels dance. Because when you learn to see the unseen — like Lisa — every day becomes a work of art.

SUMMARY:Members Forum (In Person): Introduction to DxO Processing Software with Gary Rubin
DESCRIPTION:Bio/Description: \n\n\n\nGary Rubin\n\n\n\nGary Rubin is a 2nd-year member of NPVS. His photography journey began in middle school with his dad’s Minolta SRT-101. He shot primarily black-and-white film through high school and into college\, where he was a photographer and photo editor for his college yearbook. He set photography aside for a few years after college and later made the move to digital photography about 20 years ago to document and share his kids’ activities and adventures with family members. About 10 years ago\, Gary began to return to photography as a hobby\, shooting wherever family activities and vacations took him.   \n\n\n\nAs with many digital photographers\, Gary did a majority of his processing using Adobe Lightroom. Following an Adobe price increase around 2020\, Gary began looking for subscription-free processing options and came across DxO PhotoLab and related products. DxO’s excellent denoising capabilities filled a need when processing high-school sports photos\, with DxO’s purchase of the Nik Collection tools also contributing to Gary’s decision to give DxO a try. Five years later\, Gary is a happy user of DxO PhotoLab and Nik Collection tools and administers a 3800-member Facebook group for DxO users.  \n\n\n\nDuring this Member’s Forum\, Gary will provide an introduction to DxO’s PhotoLab\, PureRaw\, and Nik Collection software tools. He will also provide a discount code should anyone be interested in purchasing DxO software.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) (Prints) A Talk on the Wild Side with Eva Lanyi
DESCRIPTION:Eva was about 11 years old when her parents gave her a camera\,  a Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  With it\, she learned the basics of photography\, and then went on to use her father’s old steel Voigtlaender camera (she still has it\, too) for more formal photography training.   In 2013\, she started learning digital photography and processing\, an ongoing effort that has happily occupied much of her time since then.  NVPS has been integral to her photo education.  She has served as coordinator for Education and Training and\, currently\, for Members’ Gallery. \n\n\n\nNature photography\, including all kinds of wildlife\, is Eva’s favorite subject\, because she enjoys being outdoors as much as possible.  She also wants to contribute\, in an admittedly small way\, to preserving the natural world through her images.  So much of it is under threat. \n\n\n\nIn the last few years\, Eva has especially enjoyed photographing animals and birds in ways that demonstrate how much they communicate without words as we understand them. Anger\, fear\, love\, and fun\, for example\, are some of the sentiments they seem to express in their own ways.  Her prints will illustrate the eloquence of animal and bird language as she has experienced it.

SUMMARY:Education & Training (In Person): Working the Scene in Landscape Photography with Judy Graham
DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life. She retired March 1\, 2018\, after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 with the goal of meeting local photographers\, doing more local photography\, and learning more about the art of photography. Judy has served in various Board positions for NVPS\, including President for the 2021-2022 club year. \n\n\n\nJudy is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in recent years she has expanded her travel to include such places as Alaska\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Ireland\, and Norway. She does not let the cold or bad weather stop her. \n\n\n\nJudy joined the Capital Photography Center as an instructor in September 2022. She shares her passion for landscape photography and teaching novice to intermediate photographers though the Year of CPC program. \n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nIn landscape photography\, “working the scene” refers to the process of carefully exploring and adjusting various elements within a location to capture the most compelling image. It involves moving around\, experimenting with different angles\, perspectives\, and focal lengths\, and considering the changing light conditions. Judy’s E&T presentation will explore various techniques from moving your feet to changing your lens to achieve your creative vision. To demonstrate the methods\, she will share with us a personal project she completed this spring. \n\n\n\nAll photos by Judy Graham:

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Getting Creative with the Cyanotype Alternative Photographic Process with Mary Louise Ravese
DESCRIPTION:Mary Louise Ravese\n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nCyanotype is a simple photographic printing process that creates an archival blue and white print. The cyanotype process was invented in the 1840s and is relatively easy and inexpensive to do at home. The chemicals involved are even safe enough to be rinsed down the drain once diluted. In the basic process\, organic material (paper\, fabric\, etc.) is coated using a light sensitive solution of iron compounds. Objects and/or film negatives are placed on the material and then exposed to UV light (sunlight or UV lamp) to develop the image. In the final step\, the exposed material is rinsed revealing an archival white print on a “Prussian Blue” background. \n\n\n\nA lot of creativity can be interjected into this basic process to produce even more interesting one-of-a-kind prints. For example\, the color of the print can be altered by adjusting the proportions of the chemical mix\, by toning the rinsed print\, or by working with a variety of additives like vinegar\, or spices like turmeric. The texture of the print can be enhanced by adding things like salt or soap bubbles during the exposure stage. Layering objects on the light sensitive material can increase the 3-dimensionality of the print. Even how the light sensitive solution is applied to the material can create visual interest with different brush stroke edge effects. \n\n\n\nIf you enjoy the process of seeing an image develop in the traditional darkroom\, then you’re going to love experimenting with the alternative photographic process of cyanotypes. Furthermore\, you’ll have fun getting photographic-like results even without a camera. For those interested in taking the process further\, photographs of a cyanotype print at different stages can be blended together in Photoshop to create stunning composite images. \n\n\n\nPhotographer Mary Louise Ravese of Bella Vista Photography is always on the lookout for ways to be creative with her photography practice. In this presentation she will discuss her foray into the cyanotype process for a new fine art photographic project. In the process you will get insights into how different effects are achieved and perhaps be inspired to try making cyanotypes of your own. To celebrate “World Cyanotype Day” on September 27\, she will be offering a weekend workshop on creating creative cyanotype prints. For more information visit her website www.BellaVistaPhotography.com.  \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nMary Louise is a fine art photographer who draws inspiration from a variety of visual arts to produce photographs often described as “painterly”. For the past 25 years\, she has traveled the world in search of her favorite subjects – landscapes\, nature close-ups\, interesting architectural details and abstracts. \n\n\n\nMary Louise’s photography is in private\, university and corporate collections in over 40 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows\, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars\, magazines\, books and websites including the National Parks Magazine and various projects with National Geographic maps. In 2020 she was awarded the distinction of “Master Artisan in Fine Art Photography” by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen\, in recognition of achievement in the three benchmarks of excellence in craftsmanship\, resolved design and unique voice. \n\n\n\nMary Louise has been a speaker at photography conferences and is a regular competition judge and speaker for photography clubs from the Carolinas to the Royal Photographic Society in England. She enjoys teaching photography at all levels and leads online and in-person classes\, as well as photography workshops. DESCRIPTION:Date Confirmed: August 16\, 2025 \n\n\n\nCalling all members that have been looking for a chance to try out “Dark Sky” photography but do not have a “Dark Sky” where you live! The August field trip is to Sky Meadows State Park\, Turner Pond entrance\, an International Dark Sky Park where “Astronomical Observation” is allowed between dusk and 2:00 AM any clear evening. This is a “learning” field trip\, especially for those of us that have not done Dark Sky photography before. As many of us will be new to this genre of photography\, we will be doing our research on camera techniques\, tips\, and tricks to prepare for our mini-expedition!When:Sat 16-Aug-2025\, orSun 17-Aug-2025\, orFri 22-Aug-2025\, orSun 24-Aug-2025This field trip requires clear weather\, so we have identified four dates to maximize the chance of finding a clear night. The table includes both the time of sunset and the time that night (“true dark”) begins. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Smithsonian Air and Space Museum - Udvar-Hazy Center
DESCRIPTION:Photo taken by Seton Droppers\n\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting summer indoor field trip to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center\, home to one of the most impressive aviation and space artifacts collections in the world. From the awe-inspiring Space Shuttle Discovery to the sleek SR-71 Blackbird\, there are endless photographic opportunities featuring historic aircraft\, spacecraft\, and stunning architecture. \n\n\n\nBest of all—no need to worry about the heat or rain since this is an indoor facility with ample lighting and plenty of visual inspiration. It’s a great chance to experiment with composition\, reflections\, and wide-angle storytelling. \n\n\n\nMore information about the museum can be found here:https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, July 19\, 2025\, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.(Rain or shine—this one’s indoors!) \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet just inside the front entrance\, past security\, near the John L. Plueger Family Welcome Center (the information desk) at 10:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nWhere:Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center14390 Air and Space Museum ParkwayChantilly\, VA 20151Google: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mYCM5exRwYB3dK6s5 \n\n\n\nMuseum Map: https://airandspace.si.edu/multimedia-gallery/hazymapweb-2022-01-1png \n\n\n\nCost:Admission is free.Parking is $15 per vehicle\, payable with your ticket inside the museum or by card at the exit gate. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nPhoto by Seton Droppers\n\n\n\n\nThe museum’s hangars are expansive\, so a wide-angle lens (e.g.\, 14-24 or 24-70) is highly recommended.\n\n\n\nA telephoto lens (e.g.\, 70-200) can help capture details in aircraft suspended overhead.\n\n\n\nNot just aircraft and large displays\, many smaller displays are available… Move in and get close!\n\n\n\nTripods and monopods are not permitted\, but handheld shooting is easy with available light\, though you may find this a good time to experiment with higher ISO.\n\n\n\nThe facility is climate-controlled but wear comfortable shoes—there’s lots of ground to cover.\n\n\n\nThere is a food court on-site if you’d like to grab lunch after the shoot.Restrooms and water fountains are available throughout the museum.\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us for a cool (literally!) and inspiring morning of photography. \n\n\n\nSeton Droppers and Christopher Fedorchak \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2025-2026 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPhoto by Seton Droppers

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Upperville Colt & Horse Show & Lunch at Stan’s
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Rena Schild\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis event is so much fun that we’re making it a club tradition!  Please join us in the beautiful Virginia countryside for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.  Established in 1853\, it is the oldest horse show in America.  There are multiple areas of competition with beautiful horses and riders of all ages. In addition to the main attraction there are artisans and other vendors and great people-watching.  And on Sunday there will be a car show with beautifully maintained antique and muscle cars.  There is pretty much something for everyone to photograph\, and parking and admission are free! \n\n\n\nPhoto by Rena Schild\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore information about the show can be found here: https://www.upperville.com \n\n\n\nAnd after the show Stan Bysshe has generously invited us for lunch and socializing at his home in Marshall\, VA.  He will also welcome club members who would like to attend the lunch without going to the horse show.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, June 7\, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. –12:30 p.m.(horse show) and 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. (lunch). (The horse show starts at 7:30 a.m. and generally goes until late in the afternoon\, so feel free to arrive early. \n\n\n\nRSVP: \n\n\n\nKindly email nvps-field-trips@googlegroups.com by June 4\, 2025 if you plan to join us for lunch at Stan’s house\, and let us know how many people are in your party.  This is to give Stan a rough idea of how many guests he can expect.  \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nUpperville Colt & Horse Show \n\n\n\n8300 John S. Mosby Highway \n\n\n\nUpperville\, VA \n\n\n\nParking is at the far end of the showgrounds.  See the map below for the parking marked as “General Admission.” There should be law enforcement on the street to direct you if needed.  We will meet near Gate 2 (also marked on the map). \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nYou will be shooting subjects both near and far\, so either a long-range lens (28-300\, for example) or two lenses (24-70 and 70-200\, or ideally 300mm+\, for example) would serve you well. \n\n\n\n*No flash photography is permitted \n\n\n\nIt may be hot and sunny\, so bring water and sun protection \n\n\n\nThere are porta-potties throughout the showgrounds. \n\n\n\nHere is a map of the showgrounds: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPhoto by Rena Schild\n\n\n\n]

SUMMARY:Members Forum (In Person) - On the Road Again with Greg and Gitta Smith
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nIn the Fall of 2019 Greg and Gitta Smith purchased a travel trailer just before COVID. Fortunately\, many State Parks recognized that RVs were self contained and did not need to use the bathhouse amenities and were open during Covid. This enabled them to discover many wonderful state parks in Virginia\, West Virginia\, and; and the surrounding beauty they inhabit. Some of these parks gave them wonderful photography opportunities. In 2021 they ventured on their first cross -country trip to Colorado where their son\, daughter-in-law and granddaughter live.  It was an amazing experience seeing parts of our beautiful country that one cannot experience when traveling by air. They have since visited National Parks such as Rocky Mountain National Park\, Grand Tetons National Park\, Yellowstone National Park\, and Acadia National Park along with a few National Monuments\, and many state parks. They have enjoyed photographing landscapes\, flora\, birds\, and other points of interest. Their purpose in this presentation is to give you a glimpse of our beautiful country and locations along the way. \n\n\n\nGitta and Greg Smith\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nGreg and Gitta Smith have been members of NVPS since 2020. They both have an eclectic interest in what they photograph.  Gitta prefers landscape\, macro\, and wildlife. Greg leans towards street\, architecture\, and landscape.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Images by Greg and Gitta Smith:

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person) - Safari with David Kravitz
DESCRIPTION:During his high school years\, David Kravitz had his own dark room and enjoyed exploring black and white film photography. Then life intervened. After college\, graduate school\, and a 40-year academic career\, he has returned to photography\, as he always intended\, though he has left film for digital. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAlthough David’s interests are wide-ranging\, his primary love is nature photography\, especially when combined with travel. This presentation is drawn from the ~25\,000 photos he took when on two back-to-back safaris with Pangolin Photo Safaris in May and June of 2024\, primarily in Botswana

SUMMARY:Members' Gallery (In Person) (Print) - "Bring Your Printed Material" Day for Everyone
DESCRIPTION:January 2025 Calendar by Eva Lanyi\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nBecause it was so popular last year\, Members’ Gallery would again like to invite everyone to share their printed photo art\, images\, and projects on May 27\, the last Tuesday meeting of the 2024-2025 year.  Each NVPS member is encouraged to bring up to four prints or photo projects created in any manner of their choosing.  Books\, calendars\, greeting cards\, framed images\, matted images; unframed or unmatted images; images printed on (but not limited to) alternative media such as wood\, metal\, canvas\, and acrylic are just a few of the possibilities.  Why not coffee mugs or fabric? \n\n\n\nThe evening will give NVPS members a chance to share their creativity and ideas for showcasing their images outside the computer. \n\n\n\nThe club will provide wooden stands for matted or framed prints\, and any other media that require them.  Questions?  Please email Members’ Gallery Co-Chair Eva Lanyi at nvps-members-gallery@googlegroups.com.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Examples of Printed Material:\n\n\n\nBook covers from Tana Ebbole’s October 2024 print presentation on handmade books :

SUMMARY:Final Portfolio Project Review (In-Person) - Group 2 with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:The final review for group two of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit as our reviewer. Brian\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. While still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filmmaking his favorite subject is the human condition—telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. In addition to his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life.Brian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non–profits including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid–Atlantic. He is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend hisLightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and other photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. \n\n\n\nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful\, but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking andjust enjoy life. Brian’s website is Brian Zwit

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:NVPS May 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\nVisiting the nation’s monuments at night is the best time of the day to experience them. Our May field trip will return to this favorite where we’ll have the opportunity to photograph the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool at sunset. We’ll also photograph the World War II Memorial and Washington Monument at the blue hour and tour the other monuments as time permits including the Vietnam War Memorial\, Korean War Memorial\, and more. This is a wonderful field trip for all levels\, especially beginners as most shots are done using manual controls. However\, there is far too much to see in one night so be prepared to return on your own. \n\n\n\nTripods are allowed in most outdoor areas\, however\, if a park ranger asks you to move or pick up your tripod\, it will be because you’re set up in a high traffic area. Tripods are not allowed anywhere inside of or on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or Jefferson Memorial. \n\n\n\nSunset is at 8:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nLenses in the range 24-200 will be most useful.\n\n\n\nGraduated filters are a great tool for capturing sunsets.\n\n\n\nA sturdy tripod along with remote shutter / cable release will be useful to keep the camera steady for long exposures.\n\n\n\nFlash and or flashlight is optional.\n\n\n\nWear your best walking shoes.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 17\, 2025 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p. m \n\n\n\nRain date on Sunday\, May 18\, 2025 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet next to 17 St. SW at the World War II Memorial. We’ll chat\, assess the weather\, and coordinate the evening’s schedule based on participant interests. If the weather cooperates\, we’ll photograph the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool set in front of a wonderful sunset. During the blue hour\, we’ll photograph the World War II Memorial itself and the Washington Monument. Then we’ll walk toward the Lincoln Memorial and stop at any memorials along the way. We’ll finish our field trip at the Lincoln Memorial which will provide us views of the Washington Monument and Capitol Hill as well as the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Rosslyn skyline. Members not interested in the sunset photo-op or extensive walking will be able to meet up with the group at the Lincoln Memorial after 9pm. \n\n\n\nMetered parking is normally in effect from 7am-8pm on Ohio Dr. SW. The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total). However\, reports indicate construction in the area and street parking on 22nd Street NW (next to Einstein statue) might be a better alternative. The parking lots A\, B\, and C along Ohio Dr just past the 14 St. overpass are also an option.  \n\n\n\nThose who wish to ride the metro will be able to use blue and orange lines servicing Foggy Bottom and Smithsonian stations which are the nearest stops on our field trip. Note that the blue line’s Arlington National Cemetery station may be a good alternate but it closes at 10pm. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025 \n\n\n\n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy Steven Glintz.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS galleries: \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2021-2022-Field-Trips/Monuments-At-Night-April-2022 \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2020-2021-Field-Trips/DC-Monuments-Sep-2020/ \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/DC-at-Night/

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Ink & Silver: Photography and the Printed Book with Stephen Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Until the advent of the omnipresent little screens in everyone’s pocket\, the way most viewers experienced photography was through books\, magazines\, posters\, and other ink–based technologies. This presentation examines how that happened (although it was neither quick nor simple)\, and offers thoughts and how the consumption of images will continue to change how we make our photographs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephen Greenberg\, MSLS\, PhD is an historian\, rare book librarian\, teacher\, writer\, and photographer originally from New York City\, but for many years he was based in suburban Maryland. He recently retired after nearly thirty years with the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine at NIH\, and continues to teach book history–related courses at the University of Maryland at College Park

SUMMARY:Education & Training (In Person): A Photographic Exploration of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:The spectacular Cliffs of Moher – Fran Bastress\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nFive NVPS members traveled to Ireland in 2024 to photograph its landscapes\, waterscapes\, cities\, ancient and sacred sites\, and—for some of them—the land of their ancestors: Jim & Jerri McDermott\, Mike Whalen\, Fran Bastress\, Ginger Werz-Petricka. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThese members will share information in the presentation about their experiences\, including major expenses\, camera gear\, and pros and cons of their styles of travel. Their diverse travel styles included: \n\n\n\n\na photo trip by bus with a professional photographer\, \n\n\n\na self-guided driving tour\, and\n\n\n\na nationally known tour company trip by bus.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThey covered much of Ireland between them\, and their photos have been compiled into a slideshow representing the best of the Emerald Isle. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are planning to travel to either Ireland or Northern Ireland\, this presentation should help you decide which areas to visit\, because each of its chapters represents photos from the six different geographical regions. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Photographers And Their BIO’s:\n\n\n\nJim and Jerri \n\n\n\nJim and Jerri McDermottJerri and Jim McDermott have been members of NVPS since (at least!) 2010\, and credit the club and its members for opportunities to grow as photographers and have a lot of fun doing that. Jim has served in a number of volunteer positions for the club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike\n\n\n\nMike WhalenMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. He joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. His photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel\, and abstract photography. He currently uses Sony equipment and post-processes with Lightroom\, Photoshop and Topaz Labs products. For this trip he took a Sony a6700 APS-C camera and 3 lenses: 18-50mm f/2.8; 10-18mm 2.8; and a 70-200mm f4. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFran\n\n\n\nFran BastressFran has been a member of NVPS since 2009\, served on its board for two years\, and placed in various competitions\, including at Nature Visions where she received the 2018 People’s Choice Award in Photo Art. In recent years she has been creating large bound photo books\, including A Journey in Ireland: Scenes from the Emerald Isle. Although devoted to Canon cameras for years\, she converted to the OM-1 in 2022. For post-processing\, Fran uses Lightroom and Photoshop\, along with Topaz and Nik plugins. She credits NVPS for her development as a photographer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger\n\n\n\nGinger Werz-PetrickaGinger joined NVPS in 2009 at a point in her life when she really needed to find a creative outlet.  She has been interested in photography since high school after receiving a Minolta SRT-101 for Christmas.  Her first DSLR was a Canon 6D that she still loves\, but for travel in particular the weight has become a problem.  Today she carries two Olympus mirrorless bodies\, the OMD mark 11 and the OM-1. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Few Of Their Images :\n\n\n\n\nKylemore Abbey – Co. Connemara – Jim McDermott\n\n\n\nDoonagore Castle – Co. Clare – Jerri McDermott\n\n\n\nDunluce Castle Ruins – Northern Ireland– Mike Whalen\n\n\n\nIrish Bagpiper\, Blarney Castle – Co. SUMMARY:Member's Forum (In Person): Aurora Photography with Nancy Galib
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nNancy will discuss her trips to see the aurora borealis\, and what she learned on each one.  The presentation will include information on gear\, camera settings\, and editing aurora photos.  And a little science from a layperson’s perspective. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNancy Galib has been a member of NVPS since 2021. She has been taking photographs for most of her life\, but much more so in the past seven or so years. She started out with a Kodak Instamatic camera when she was a teenager\, moved on to a rangefinder\, and then an SLR during the film–only era. But digital photography and post–production tools  were game changers. It’s so much easier to experiment without the expense of getting rolls of film developed. Her photography really took off after a photo trip to Alaska in the winter of 2017 when she learned about shooting raw files and post–processing with Lightroom and Photoshop. She loves the creativity that it gives her to convey what she feels. Nancy has taken several photography trips since then to places like Yellowstone\, the Southwest\, and most recently\, Botswana. Each trip brings new skills\, new ways of seeing the world around her\, and new friends. Her photography doesn’t yet have a particular style\, and she is not drawn to one particular genre. She sees photography as a journey of learning\, seeing\, and connecting with the world around her.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Digital\, In Person) - iPhone Photography: The Things You See! with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith his iPhones\, Greg Smith has often captured spur-of-the-moment events\, but also taken landscapes\, portraits\, and anything else that is picture worthy.  And quite a bit that is not.  Greg has found that often the iPhone’s camera settings are excellent as far as the image capture and has used native and Lightroom apps for editing his pictures.  With the iPhone Pro model\, he recently learned from NVPS members that he could even take RAW photos. \n\n\n\nGreg enjoys photographing whatever he happens upon\, primarily birds and landscapes\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity. As he and Gitta travel around the country in their RV trailer\, he has found that taking a quick iPhone picture from the same vantage point as the pictures they took with their Nikons\, Greg is able to capture the location and have it on a map\, making remembering where they took all the pictures much easier.  They have taken multiple trips to Denver\, the Grand Tetons\, Yellowstone\, and Acadia National Parks\, lots of State Parks\, and many stops in between and along the way.  Yes\, you can use the GPS function with your camera\, but Greg thinks the iPhone has made it even easier. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Smith became interested in photography from an early age when watching his father\, taking many pictures throughout their many family travels.  His dad always considered angles and framed the subjects when he could\, describing what and why as he did so.  Greg got his first SLR\, a Minolta\, prior to deploying to the Mediterranean with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures. However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy that he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from three blocks away to get it all in!  Many years of photography have followed.  Greg shoots primarily with his Nikon D750\, but he has a great camera in his pocket all the time – his iPhone!

SUMMARY:Members Gallery (Prints) (In Person): In Search of Big Cats with Don Little
DESCRIPTION:Black Leopard by Don Little\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThere is something compelling about big cats. It is easy to be drawn in by their gaze. Their majestic appearance and nature are awe-inspiring\, and it is thrilling to see and try to capture moments of as they live their lives hunting\, playing and resting.  Don Little undertook a somewhat unpredictable journey last year to try and find and photograph one particular leopard\, a melanistic (black) leopard in Kenya.  Black leopards are quite rare and this one leopard is really the only one in Africa that you may have a chance to photograph as her home range overlaps with a camp in Laikipia and she is less shy than others. While Don only had a few brief encounters with her (in mostly low light…)\, it was an amazing experience. As with many wild animals\, you are often dealing with early morning or evening low light and trying to balance shutter speed\, aperture and ISO for the best quality photos. Every encounter with a big cat is thrilling\, being able to capture a few images is a plus. Don is looking forward to the next opportunity to see these amazing creatures in the wild again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon Little\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nDon began his photography journey in high school with an old twin reflex of his Dad’s. His photography grew largely from his travels exploring other counties and love of nature. Starting mostly with travel and landscapes and in recent years he has shifted more to wildlife. He joined NVPS a few years ago looking for kindred spirits and hoping to improve his photographic results beyond the “postcard” photos of the past. \n\n\n\nA goal has emerged in recent years to photograph many of the big cats in the wild. He has managed to get 5 of the top 7 big cats in recent years (tigers\, lions\, jaguars\, pumas and leopards). The sixth\, Cheetahs\, should be an easy fix with the right Africa trip. While the seventh\, snow leopards\, will take a bit more of an effort and luck… \n\n\n\nAdditional Photos by Don Little:\n\n\n\n\nKanha Tiger\n\n\n\nPantanal Jaguar\n\n\n\nPatagonia Puma

SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) - Theme: Texture with Judge Greg Holden
DESCRIPTION:Greg Holden is a photographer from Longmont\, Cowho uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. He enjoys creative photos of little scenes often overlooked by others rather than postcard landscapes. Although he won’t pass by a chance to photograph a beautiful landscape or a tranquil sunset\, he’d rather be exploring abandoned places and capturing the details of the layers of paint and rust on a discarded automobile.   \n\n\n\nGreg enjoys searching used bookstores for photo collections and has over 180 books (as of Oct 2023) on and about photography.  He finds inspiration from master photographers and a wide range of subjects\, such as: the close-up beach studies by Minor White\, the early portraiture of Steichen and Stieglitz\, and street scenes by Andre Kertesz.  He enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography and speaks at camera clubs near his home in the greater Denver area\, but also speaks and judges virtually to clubs across the US. You can see Greg’s work on his website imagesunderfoot.com

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) - No More Rules: Human Perceptions in Composition with Colleen Miniuk
DESCRIPTION:Oftentimes photographers spend much time forcing their scenes to fit the rules (which yields technically “perfect” but perhaps boring photographs) rather than arranging the subject matter based on emotional responses and human perceptions. This insightful and educational presentation\, outdoor photographer/writer Colleen Miniuk goes beyond reviewing the predominant composition rules and shares how we can leverage the reasoning behind human perception (not rules!) to help elicit specific responses from our viewers. Hear how subject matter placement\, the use of different types of lines\, relationships between shapes\, and other visual language help us arrange our scenes to communicate meaning and messages more effectively with our audiences. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColleen Miniuk is a corporate-America-escapee turned full-time freelance outdoor photographer\, author\, educator\, and motivational speaker from Chandler\, AZ. Through her work\, she aims to inspire adventures in the Great Outdoors and encourage others to live their most fulfilling life\, “the big Life with a capital L\,” with or without a camera in hand. Her work has graced the pages of publications such as National Geographic\, Arizona Highways\, AAA Via\, On Landscape\, National Parks Traveler\, and a broad variety of other outlets. She has penned several award-winning books\, including Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers; The Current Flows: Water in the Arid West\, and Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When\, Where\, and How (after serving thrice as Acadia’s Artist-in-Residence). Her first adventure travel memoir\, So Said the River: Life\, Loss\, and Pie on the Colorado\, was published in July 2024. She writes an online photography advice column called “Dear Bubbles.” She leads photography workshops (including all-women sessions called Sheography™)\, teaches classes\, and offers one-on-one mentoring. SUMMARY:Member's Forum (In Person): So You Want to Visit the Colorado Plateau? with David Lattanzi
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nThe Colorado Plateau in the American Southwest is one of the great photographic destinations and has something for everyone. We’ll discuss how to plan your trip and how to think creatively about the opportunities that abound there. \n\n\n\nDavid Lattanzi\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nDavid Lattanzi got into photography 25 years ago after finding his mother’s old Canon AE-1\, primarily to impress his girlfriend. His love of photography has lasted a lot longer than that relationship. His photographic journey started with traditional black and white darkroom processes that still influence the way he shoots today. He has a love of both nature and travel photography\, often in combination. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world with his camera\, having visited 50 states\, 5 continents\, and more countries than he can count. He counts Fay Godwin\, Bruce Percy\, and Clyde Butcher among the many photographers that have inspired him over the years. He has been a member of NVPS since 2018. DESCRIPTION:Portrait By Benita Mayo\n\n\n\nColena’s passion for photography began in high school when a family friend gave her a film camera. She quickly became the go-to photographer for family gatherings. In 2003\, she upgraded to her first digital camera\, the Nikon Coolpix E4300. Over the years\, she used several Nikon digital SLRs\, including the D90 and D7100. Thirteen years later\, seeking a lighter camera for a cruise\, Colena purchased a Fujifilm X-E2 and became an immediate fan. Since then\, she’s added the Fujifilm X-T2\, X-T5\, and X-T30 to her collection and sold her Nikon gear. \n\n\n\nColena’s main passion lies in capturing people in various settings. Over time\, her interests have also grown to include abstract\, macro\, and nature photography. Her work has been featured in juried exhibitions such as the Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions and the Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibit. \n\n\n\nColena became a member of NVPS in February 2012 and has held various roles\, including coordinator for the Members’ Gallery\, the Ask Me A Question Table\, and Board Secretary/Historian. She credits the Club with fostering her ongoing growth and passion for the art and craft of photography. As a volunteer photographer\, Colena has contributed her skills to organizations such as the Professional Woman’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, the Library of Congress National Book Festival\, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, and Honor Flight. In 2016\, the Reston Association recognized her with the Adult Volunteer Group of the Year Award. For the past twenty years\, she has also been actively involved in the Photography Ministry at Heritage Fellowship Church. \n\n\n\nFor the March Members’ Virtual Gallery\, Colena will showcase images captured during a Street Photography workshop in Cuba. One of the featured images\, titled “Reflection\,” was published in CubaSeen Issue 09\, a bilingual art zine that highlights works by both Cuban and American artists.
