DESCRIPTION:Prints (Virtually): Exploring Delaware with Deb and Art Rose\nArt and Deb have enjoyed having two “home” states; one in Alexandria Virginia\, and the other in Bethany Beach Delaware. The two locations are polar opposites\, yet complement each other beautifully. \nAlexandria offers the bustle of historic Old Town\, Northern Virginia\, and DC museums and landmarks. They enjoy photographing local places such as Huntley Meadows\, Dyke Marsh\, Mason Neck\, Conowingo Dam\, Battlefields\, and Shenandoah. \nBethany Beach offers the quiet of the ocean\, natural vistas\, and a slower paced lifestyle. They enjoy photographing sunrise on the beach (well\, Deb more so than Art at 5 AM)\, native birds\, and sunsets on the Bay at the Ocean View VFW. \nWith their international travel on hold during the pandemic\, and closure of museums and other sites in Virginia\, they spent more time in Delaware exploring the “First State”\, and made some delightful photography discoveries. They explored many sites including the capitol buildings in Dover\, National Wildlife Refuges of Prime Hook and Bombay Hook\, Assawoman Wildlife Areas\, Great Cypress Swamp\, Delaware Botanical Gardens\, James Farm Ecological Preserve\, Abbott’s\, Warren and Double Mills\, Slaughter Beach\, and Lavender Fields. \nArt and Deb’s interest in photography began over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, Art as a chemical engineer and Deb as a pediatric physical therapist\, they have been living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography. Past travels through North\, Central and South America included the Panama Canal\, Galapagos\, Ecuador\, Peru and Machu Picchu. Travels through Europe and Asia included Singapore\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Hong Kong\, Italy\, Greece and Malta. They enjoy all types of photography encountered on their travels: landscape\, street\, wildlife\, architectural\, night sky and every flavor in-between. \nMembers of NVPS since 2018\, Art and Deb enjoy learning and developing creative skills to enhance their photography. Deb blends watercolor painting and brush effects with her photography to create photo artistic pieces\, and Art enjoys applying new techniques to landscape\, wildlife and still-life photos. \n“We see photography as a way to connect with others\, capture the experiences of new places\, and discover different perspectives of familiar places”. \n   \n  \n  \nDigital: Patterns and Graphics with Wayne Guenther\n  \nWayne Guenther\nWhen Wayne joined Gallery West (Alexandria VA) artist’s cooperative in 1995\, he was an artist without an identity\, a style.  Wayne shot whatever he liked\, and never examined why he liked the subject or settled on a particular composition.  That gradually changed as he created new work monthly and received a lot of feedback about the “graphic nature” of his subjects and compositions.  By 2001 Wayne had a second solo show that was nearly all graphic interpretations of furniture\, and his statement started with “I like angles\, lines and curves\, so furniture is a natural subject”.  Wayne’s third solo show at the gallery in 2003 was based entirely on interpretations of stairs\, which have lines and curves of course.  Jumping 18 years to today\, Wayne has become a “generalist” in that extensive travel has given him so many subjects to photograph\, but his underlying compositional instinct is still graphic based.  This digital presentation will show examples of this result. \nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions. \nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic.  He switched to the micro-four-thirds system in 2014 and uses Olympus E-M1 bodies and a combination of Olympus and Lumix/Panasonic lenses. \n

DESCRIPTION:Portfolio Project:  The second final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Cynthia Keith as our reviewer for the final fifteen participants in this years group. \nCynthia L. Keith is a native Washingtonian. Her love of photography started in a journalism class at Walt Whitman High School and over the years has led her to scenic locations from Alaska to Maine in search of landscape images. Her specialty is garden landscape photography\, a marriage of her vision for the grand landscape and intimate flower portraits. \nCynthia has been a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club since 1992 where she has exhibited\, participated in numerous presentations\, and served on multiple committees. She is a frequent judge at camera clubs in the greater Washington area. \nOutside of photography\, she has a BA in Music and an MBA from the University of Maryland and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Cynthia has worked for several financial firms in the Washington\, DC area during her career as an investment manager. She is past president of the Washington Association of Money Managers and the CFA Institute in Washington.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Brookside Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Brookside Gardens is part of the Wheaton Regional Park and is operated by Montgomery Parks. This award-winning 50-acre public display garden has a wide array of subjects to satisfy the landscape and garden photographer. The location boasts excellent water features such as a small pond with reflection terrace and a Japanese tea house\, a brook connecting the pond to Pine Lake (further south)\, and an aquatic garden. May and early June are especially colorful months for Maryland and Virginia so we can expect many of the various gardens maintained by the park to be in full bloom. \nAdmission to the gardens is free and no permits are required for non-commercial photographers. Brookside Gardens asks that photographers not disturb the gardens\, block paths\, or interfere with other visitors’ enjoyment of the gardens.  (Brookside Gardens Photo Policy) \nWhat: \nThis outdoor venue will give us a very colorful way of keeping our social distancing up while we ride out the COVID variants. We’ll meet at the visitor’s center where we can say hello and get caught up. Groups can break off to start capturing wider landscape shots found by walking south of the visitor’s center (follow trails leading to your right). Or if you’re more inclined to start working the garden vignettes\, follow the trails east of the visitor’s center (generally trails that lead to the left). Either way\, you can’t lose. \nUnfortunately\, the conservatory building is closed. That means there will be no access to the greenhouse or the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. When they reopen\, it is recommended you return and pay the small fee to enter. \nSunrise is expected at 5:56 a.m (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 18-200mm should satisfy most needs. A macro lens is also recommended.\nTripods are allowed provided they don’t destroy the gardens or get in the way of other visitors.\nHandheld toys such as lights\, crystal balls\, reflectors\, and diffusers are welcome (keep a low profile to avoid any suspicions that we know what we’re doing).\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, May 15\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.\nRain date on Sunday\, May 16\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. \nThe visitor’s center opens at 10a.m. \nWhere: \n1800 Glenallan Avenue\nWheaton\, MD 20902 \nWe will meet outside the visitor’s center (main parking lot) at 7a.m. for a brief meet and greet. \nPlenty of free parking is available at the main entrance/visitor’s center. Nicol specializes in portrait photography with an approach that balances authenticity in studio craft with a refined finishing style to bring out and preserve the beauty of the subject’s character. \nHer photographs have been published in the Photographer’s Forum Best of Photography Annual\, The Journal of the Royal Photographic Society\, and numerous exhibition books. DESCRIPTION:Program \nIn this presentation\, Mike will show images from his 2017 two-week driving adventure around southern Spain. Photos from the following areas will be shown: \n\nBarcelona: Street photos along La Rambla; Also\, several buildings designed by architect\, Antoni Gaudi\, including his home\, and the Sagrada Familia cathedral will be displayed.\nMalaga: The medieval Moorish palace\, Alcazaba\, and views of the city from the hilltop ruins of Castillo Gibralfaro.\nGrenada: The Alhambra Palace.\nCordoba: The Roman Bridge\, The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba.\nCadiz: Festival of the Virgin of Rosario Coronada\, Cathedral by the Sea.\nSeville: Cathedral of Seville; Royal Alcazar of Seville.\nCosta del Sol: Nerja and Marbella.\n\nExamples of Roman\, Gothic and Moorish influences will be presented. \nBIO \nAs a teen\, Mike learned a few basic photo tips from his father\, an artist and photographer. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that\, played with several digital point-and-shoots.  However\, his interest became more passionate after purchasing a basic DSLR in 2006. \nMike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. He held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including President in 2013. He received several distinguished service awards and multiple competition awards thru the years including image of the year. \nBefore COVID\, Mike volunteered weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, and as an event photographer for charitable organization’s such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \nMike says that joining NVPS was a significant step in furthering his interest in photography.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Maine with Mike Kane & Digital: Passion for Architecture with Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Maine with Michael Kane\nMike Kane will present a sampling of images from his explorations of the mid-coast of Maine. \nPhotography started early for Mike\, while in high school he picked up an Argus C3 rangefinder and began teaching himself how to make images. He moved onto using a Minolta SRT-101 during his college years while dabbling in his own darkroom but life soon brought a career and children which left little time for exploring with his camera. \nFollowing a 30 year career in local government\, Mike bought a digital camera to reacquaint himself with photography. He joined NVPS in 2009 to meet other photographers and to learn as much as he could about digital photography. \nHis passion for photography grew\, he graduated from the Washington School of Photography in 2011 and had success selling his fine art prints and instructing introductory classes in digital photography. \nIn 2013 Mike and his wife left Northern Virginia for the mid-coast of Maine where he has a small real estate photography business and ample opportunities for expanding his personal catalog of images and prints. \nWith being able to re-connect with friends on Zoom\, Mike re-joined NVPS in 2020. \n  \n  \n  \nPassion for Architecture with Judy Guenther\nJudy Guenther specifically loves the many opportunities provided by architecture: rotundas\, stairs\, bridges\, cultural icons\, specific architects\, skylines\, cathedrals\, exterior\, interior\, reflections\, details\, abstracts and cultural. She has narrowed down the focus of her presentation tonight to the architects Frank Gehry\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, and Santiago Calatrava\, rotundas\, stairs\, and cultural buildings. \nJudy joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer and enjoys post-processing and creativity. She has spent this period of Covid isolation without travel by working on photos from past travels. Judy is a member of the Art League at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria\, the Maryland Federation for the Arts\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Group. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects including architecture\, landscapes\, abstracts\, colors\, nature\, wildlife and cultural portraits. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: Fountains: A man-made ornamental structure\, that pumps water. No shortage of fountains locally but anywhere in the world is fine. Rain or shine\, day or night\, literal or abstract. \nDENISE SILVA – WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER IN VIRGINIA \nDenise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. Haupt Garden sits at the center of the city block framed between 12th St. and 7th St. SW and Independence Ave and Jefferson Dr SW.  Included in this block are a number of iconic and unique structures including (but not limited to) the Smithsonian Castle\, Arts and Industries Building\, and Hirshhorn Museum.  Between these structures\, the Smithsonian maintains a variety of gardens and outdoor vignettes including the Haupt Garden\, Moongate Garden\, Mary Livingston Ripley Garden\, and more.  This spot is a gem on The Mall of Washington DC and ideal for our purposes allowing us to spread out. \nYour field trip coordinators have chosen a date in mid-April in hopes of avoiding any potential leftover crowds caused by the cherry blossoms.  At the time of this writing\, all museums are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Also in the news are the renovations planned for the Haupt Garden and immediate area.  However\, we have received word\, the construction planned for 2021 will now begin in 2023. \nWhat: \nIn this field trip\, we’ll tip toe through the tulips while gawking at the architecture.  The Smithsonian Castle and the Enid A. DESCRIPTION:Nic Stover created the Psychology of Photography as a way to help photographers think of ways to think beyond the basics of taking pictures and into the world of creating images. The Psychology of Photography explores 5 different areas that encompass the bigger part of the artistic and creative process. \nFirst\, we will look at Sensations and Perceptions which is how do we perceive the world and make order out of it\, we will also look at Beliefs and Creativity\, finding some of what we believe in and how do we create.  But no part of perceptions and beliefs are complete unless we look at Expression and Interpretation the parts of us that is about how do we interpret scenes and develop them (and ourselves) through processing. The final portion is about our Formulation and Evolution where we explore what kind of photographer\, we are\, want to be\, and where we are going. With the final piece being Reflection and Refinement of how we can put ourselves and our processes into a state of constant renewal. \nThrough our time together with Nic we will look at how are we drawn to patterns\, shapes\, lines\, and what do they mean to our subconscious. We will also explore some of the different schools of psychology and how the brain forms thoughts and how you can work with that\, examine some of the models of creativity and how we can look to follow and understand where we are in the creative process and understand that there are definable stages of our growth that we experience as photographers. \nAbout Nic Stover \nNic Stover was raised in the high mountains of Western Colorado on a single magazine subscription to National Geographic and only 5 television channels\, where the only shows his family regularly watched were Nature (PBS) and the Tour De France. It was here that his love for adventure\, the outdoors\, and photography took shape. \nStover is based in San Luis Obispo\, California and focuses on landscape photography classes and workshops encouraging his class participants to Develop their skills\, Explore their capabilities\, and to Create meaningful work. \nNic Stover Photography exists to help photographers understand the unique perspectives that assist in the discovery of their capabilities\, while enabling a deeper connection with themselves and others through creative expression.  Through his classes\, webinars\, tutorials\, and presentations Nic works with people of all ages\, backgrounds\, experiences\, and desires focused around a dialog on how we can thrive in our own unique creative and artistic process. \nHis landscape photography work has taken him across the globe — from the backcountry of Greenland\, to the windswept mountains of Patagonia\, and the frigid extremes of Alaska.  His portfolio of work encompasses desert\, ocean\, night\, and mountain photography.  Nic also enjoys showcasing the amazing the places that are unique to the Central Coast\, from sea caves to sand dunes\, and its dramatic coastal landscapes. \nAdditional information can be found at www.stoverphoto.com

Submit images you are using new software to process; images you like but feel may need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images.   You can also ask questions a bit more anonymously using Zoom chat sent by direct message only to E & T coordinator Eva Lanyi. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, March 22\, 2021\, to allow time for Mike Whalen to anonymize the images and for Lynn and Willa to review them before the March 30 meeting. \nYou can submit up to three images.  Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Egypt: Cairo and Points South  with Colena Turner
DESCRIPTION:Colena Turner will entertain NVPS members on March 24th with a talk and pictures of the eleven-day trip she took with her husband to Egypt. From the look of the pictures below this is sure to be an exciting and informative presentation. \nSince high school\, Colena has enjoyed taking pictures.  With her film camera\, she became the family photographer for get-togethers.  In 2003\, she purchased her first digital camera and has expanded her interests to nature\, macro\, abstract\, portrait\, event and street photography.  Colena has used several Nikon DSLRs including D90 and D7100.  In 2016\, looking for a lighter and smaller camera to take on a cruise\, she purchased a Fujifilm X-E2.  She has since added a Fujifilm X-T2 to her camera bag and subsequently sold all of her Nikon equipment. \nShe joined NVPS in February 2012 and has served as coordinator for Members’ Gallery and Ask Me A Question table.  As a volunteer photographer\, Colena has shared her talent with the Professional Woman’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, Library of Congress National Book Festival\, Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, Honor Flight and Reston Association.  For the past ten years\, she has served in the Photography Ministry at her place of worship\, Heritage Fellowship Church.  Colena continues to learn about the art of photography through workshops. \nPhoto credits go to Gwen Flowers for Colena’s beautiful headshot.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Macro Photography with Kieulan Nguyen & Digital: FIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China with Kieu-Hahn Vu
DESCRIPTION:Macro Photography with Kieulan Nguyen\nFlower photography is one of few things that Kieulan loves to photograph.   The shapes\, the vibrant colors\, the textures that she always looks for when she takes pictures of flowers.  For the last few year\, Kieulan has evolved her macro photography from traditional floral photography using selective focus to high key flower photography on a light box and especially during 2020 due to Covid 19 she has picked up a new way to express the beauty of flowers that she captured and then digitally painted them in Photoshop. \nKieulan considers herself as a beginner of floral digital artist and continues to expand her love for flowers.  From taking a picture of a flower and then painting it some how she feels she has come a complete cycle of her creativity in creating a beautiful flower image. \n    \n  \nFIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China with Kieu-Hahn Vu\nKieu-Hanh’s presentation is a compilation of her photos from her FIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China in 2017.  Shandong is known as the hometown of Confucius and Mencius.  This photo meeting consists of more than 320 photographers from over 40 countries and regions around the world.  They gathered in Shadong\, China to photograph the traditional culture\, and the natural landscape of Ji’nan\, Tai’an\, Jining\, Liaocheng\, Zaozhuang\, Zibo\, Weifang\, and Qingdao. \nWhile photographers usually learn to take pictures first and then learn how to edit their pictures using post processing tools\, Kieu-Hanh went the unconventional route.  She first learned about the editing tools when she took a computer graphics course in college\, and because she was so interested in those editing tools\, she began learning about photography so that she could apply her skills.  She first picked up a point-and-shoot camera\, and joined the Vietnamese Photographic Society (VNPS) in 2006 to learn how to take pictures.  She has since moved on to several SLR digital cameras\, and currently uses a Canon 7D Mark II.  She is also a member of Photographic Society of America (PSA) and the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).  Since 2009\, she has been a frequent speaker at VNPS’s educational programs\, as well as contributed her written articles on photography techniques.  For the past seven years\, she has also been part of the judging panel in several photo contests and portfolio projects at this camera club. \nKieu-Hanh has been a member of Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) since 2008.  She considers herself as an avid amateur photographer.  She uses photography as ways to relax and to reduce the stress from her hectic lifestyle.  Her main interest is nature photography and photojournalism.  When creating an image\, she tries to convey an idea\, message\, or thought in her image.  Kieu-Hanh has won numerous competitions and awards for her photographs at international\, national\, and local competitions. \nKieu-Hanh is currently working as a Systems Analyst in Washington DC.  She lives with her husband in Fairfax\, Virginia.

Extensive woodland trails\, boardwalks through the wetlands\, and an observation deck allow for close viewing of the abundant and diverse wildlife. March conditions can be unpredictable as we transition from winter to spring. SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Mark Van Bergh – No Theme
DESCRIPTION:Mark Van Bergh is a Washington\, D.C. area attorney and photographer.  His photographic interests are varied\, ranging from a passion for nature and wildlife photography\, to travel\, people\, weddings\, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other events.  Beyond the Washington beltway\, Mark’s photographic pursuits have taken him throughout the United States\, including many of our National Parks and wildlife refuges\, to Canada\, Costa Rica\, Europe (east and west)\, many sub-Sahara African nations (Botswana\, Kenya\, Namibia\, Rwanda\, South Africa\, Tanzania and Zambia)\, Japan\, China\, Iceland and Antarctica.  Mark has had photographs displayed at the Foundry Gallery in Washington\, the Washington School of Photography\, and photographic retailers.  He has a number of photographs in the coffee-table book Focus on Africa: Wildlife\, Conservation and Man.  Mark has received several awards for his photography\, including a first place in the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival Photography Competition and third place in a juried show of mid-Atlantic regional photographers.  Mark is currently co-coordinator of the National Zoo’s Photo Club\, does presentations on nature and wildlife photography to Washington area camera clubs\, judges local camera club competitions\, and has written for an on-line nature photography magazine. \nA resident of Arlington\, Virginia\, Mark’s websites can be found at: www.markvanbergh.com and www.markvanbergh.zenfolio.com.  He can be reached by e-mail at: mvanbergh@comcast.net or by telephone at (703) 298-4870. \n

DESCRIPTION:Second Preliminary Review\, Portfolio Project – features the preliminary review of the second half of this year’s Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  We have an amazing variety of subject matter and approaches\, some of which have been inspired by the pandemic restrictions surrounding us. Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Willa Siegel\, and Brenda Wilson\, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project will offer their feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented: the artist statement\, how it reflects the portfolio content\, and the cohesiveness of portfolio images. The preliminary review gives a good opportunity to focus upon the artist statement\, and whether it clearly and concisely tells the viewer what the subject is\, why the artist selected this subject\, and how the goal of the project was accomplished.

SUMMARY:Programs: Chasing The Stars - Capturing The Night Sky with Robert Fawcett
DESCRIPTION:Chasing the Stars – Capturing the Night Sky – a visual presentation of capturing the Milky Way month by month highlighting the season from January to October. Emphasis is placed on the importance of planning to capture in camera a perceived nightscape for a star filled sky (composition). As part of the planning aspect\, Robert will discuss the apps for scouting locations\, positioning and time of day. He will also discuss choosing the right camera equipment\, lenses for a night of shooting along with various types of low-level lighting to employ on your night time experience. As a preface\, Robert will talk about various post-processing techniques to help make decisions on shooting methods for quality night sky images. \nRobert W. Fawcett (Bob) – Retired from 31 years of Government service\, 26 of those years as a Forensic / Scientific / Technical Photographer. Growing up in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania the interest in photography began early with his father taking the family on weekend drives through the country\, taking in the scenery down back roads never explored. Little did Robert know back then it would become a career that would take him on a journey to places around the globe. That journey began in Washington\, D.C. in October of 1985. As he continues the journey\, his plan is to share with others his passion for photography and pass along the experiences from the days of film to the current digital world. From the beginning and up until present Robert have always been a true believer of shooting in a manual mode\, using the three things of what photography is: ISO\, Aperture and Shutter. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum –Planning Travel for Photography with Wayne & Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Travel Planning\nWayne and Judy Guenther found their love of travel when stationed in Germany with the Army in the early 1980’s and subsequently squeezed in trips around work requirement and singing engagements.  In 2009 Judy retired and joined the already-retired Wayne\, and since then they have visited 47 countries\, Antarctica\, and have taken three trans-USA and one Canadian Maritimes road trips. In 2019 they travelled a total of 22 weeks.  Their favorite destination is a toss-up between New Zealand and South Georgia Island\, but their favorite country\, visited numerous times\, is France. \nTheir trips fall into two broad categories: (1) Group trips and (2) Self-Planned trips. Both categories require planning\, and they have found a variety of resources which have made their trips rewarding.  The tools and resources they use are applicable to all the planning types\, varying in their importance.  Regardless of the category or destination. they always look for photographic interest and have a camera handy.  This Member’s Forum will talk about decisions of where\, when\, and how to travel\, and tools and resources that they have found useful to that end. \n  \nBios for Wayne and Judy Guenther\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne sang in local performing ensembles for many years\, one of which rehearsed on Tuesday nights\, so he didn’t join NVPS until 2015. He was awarded the Class 3 Digital Photographer of the Year designation for 2016-2017 and was judged Best in Show for his landscape photo in the 2018 Nature Visions exposition. \nJudy Guenther shared her love of travel and adventure with Wayne\, but her latent interest in photography didn’t begin to blossom until 2009 when she moved from her point-and-shoot to a Nikon D90 and enthusiastically embraced both retirement travel and the enjoyment of finding interesting subjects.  Wayne obligingly passed along more equipment and advice (why does the aperture get smaller when the number get bigger was never satisfactorily answered)\, and near-constant practice and two Allison Shaw week-long classes and one with Nevada Wier quickly honed her skills.  Her latent artistic esthetics came into their own with even more travel that introduced new subjects like wildlife\, landscapes\, abstracts\, and architecture.  Like Wayne\, she retired from the singing group that conflicted and joined NVPS in 2015. She has received awards both in Nature Visions and NVPS\, is an active member of The Art League in Alexandria\, Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis\, and the F11 Women’s Photography group. \nBoth Wayne and Judy converted to the Micro Four-thirds system in 2014 and use Olympus E-M1 cameras with a variety of Olympus\, Lumix\, and Sigma lenses. \nWinterthur\, Delaware

DESCRIPTION:Gems of the Canadian Rockies\nPhoto Credit: Rena Schild \nOver 20 years ago\, Jack had watched a PBS show on some of the great lodges from around the world where he first saw images of the beauty surrounding Chateau Lake Louise\, thus creating an entry to his world travels bucket list. So\, in 2019\, he and his wife Susy made plans to stay at the Chateau and to further explore the Canadian Rockies. Their plans centered around bus tour to the great resorts of the Canadian Rockies which included stays at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge\, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise\, and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel\, also known as the “Castle of the Rockies”. What he learned on the trip was that the beauty around Chateau Lake Louise that first attracted him to the area extended throughout the entire Canadian Rockies. The pictures shown tonight are just a small sample of the widespread mountain beauty that they experienced on their journey. \nJack’s photography journey began with his first 35mm film camera\, a Minolta X-370\, back in the 1980s. He enjoyed his photography for several years\, mostly while traveling\, until his interest waned in the early 2000s as the digital transition began. His interest in photography was renewed when he picked up his first digital camera\, a Nikon P610 in 2015\, in anticipation of a European River Cruise. He enjoyed the freedom of the digital medium and certainly all the auto features on his point-and-shoot bridge camera. \nAfter Jack retired from his years in the software engineering industry in late 2018\, he needed to find something to pass his time so he thought about photography. His searching for photography clubs brought him to his first NVPS club meeting in September 2019. Since then\, it has been a good whirlwind of activity. He was fortunate enough to have an image juried into NatureVision and  has received a couple of ribbons in the NVPS monthly competitions. The club has been very encouraging\, and he believes he has grown his skills by upgrading his camera to a Nikon D7500 with an 18-300mm zoom lens. moving fully onto manual\, learning better composition\, and venturing into post-processing. He is enjoying all the benefits of the club and learning from all of the extraordinary talent in it. \nJack is still trying to figure out what he likes to photograph\, but he certainly likes taking pictures of big landscape vistas and capturing his travels from around the world. \n   \n  \nAbandoned Places\, Abandoned Spaces – with Karol and John Murray\nKarol in the Woods! \nKarol finds herself drawn to abandoned places. She’s not sure why\, but finds herself wondering what it was like when they were functioning\, who lived or worked there\, and why they were abandoned.  She began dragging John along on fieldtrips and he caught her fascination with such empty spaces.  Fortunately\, Karol hasn’t abandoned him on any of these trips – yet. \nFor this collection\, we wanted to share photos from some of our favorite haunts in this genre\, including images from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum\, Eastern State Penitentiary\, Ellis Island\, A. Hoen & Co. Lithograph Building\, and other abandoned places and abandoned spaces. \nKarol and John Murray have been involved in photography in one form or another since the early 1970s but did not get “serious” until more recently.  John started with a Mamiya Sekor and shot friends\, family\, sunsets\, and travels when he was in the Navy.  He even had a darkroom in the basement.  Karol shot mostly our children but has a good eye\, won several photo contests\, and even got a picture on a magazine cover. \nAfter a long pause from photography\, Karol joined NVPS in 2013 and became enthralled by her ability to see things differently and capture her vision digitally\, using a Nikon D7200.  John eventually got tired of being her Sherpa and began taking pictures about five years ago – first with a Nikon point and shoot that Karol bought him for Christmas and now with a mirrorless Fujifilm.  Together they have travelled far and wide taking pictures to satisfy creative urges and document their adventures.  They mostly shoot landscapes and architecture but will stop along the side of the road if something catches their eye. \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Photography Thru the Eyes of a Biologist – Lessons Learned with Dennis Govoni
DESCRIPTION:Dennis’ presentation is really a journey of how he became a photographer purely through “desperation” and how this affected him over the years in taking photographs. The journey starts with recognition that there is diversity in nature\, that there are discernible patterns and that details are important. Then you have to determine how to best photograph it to create an image that reflects the elements of that subject. While documenting nature is part of this\, you have to find a way to take an image that has the “Oh\, gee wiz” factor.  This presentation will review some images from a variety of subjects that explain my approach as a biologist. \nDennis is an avid nature photographer who has been photographing the natural world for over 50 years. His introduction to photography occurred in undergraduate school while taking a plant identification course. He enjoyed this so much that he continued to do photography through graduate school and beyond. \nDuring his tenure as an Associate Professor of Biology at Virginia Wesleyan College\, Dennis often taught photography during the college’s two week January term in both black and white and color (using the Cibachrome direct print-to-print method). \nSince retiring he has expanded his interest beyond plant photography to include scenics and wildlife and has traveled extensively along the eastern United States and to such far away places as India and the Far East. \nDennis is also a Getty stock photo contributor since 2012 and has images published in Photography Week and recently in The Atlantic and other multi-media outlets. \nHis current equipment includes both Canon and Sony.

DESCRIPTION:Retrospective 2019 with Sid Stone\n2019 was a busy travel and photography year for Sidney and his partner Joanna. During 2019 they traveled to Nova Scotia\, Palm Springs\, Vermont\, Australia and Philadelphia. Some of the travel was related to Jo’s job and Sidney got to tag along getting a lot of free time to explore the locals and take pictures. \nSidney will take us back to the “normal” days of 2019 and perhaps add a few shots from his younger days. \nSidney has been photographing seriously since about the age of 9 starting as many did with a Kodak Brownie. Although he recalls taking some pictures with his father’s Kodak Bantam camera that used 828 film. Sidney still has that camera. His love of darkroom work was triggered as he watched his father develop prints in a make shift kitchen darkroom. He thought it was magic to see an image appear on white paper placed in a tray of chemicals. This love of the darkroom led to countless hours spent in darkrooms at his high school\, college\, apartment with the window covered\, a kitchen\, a converted bathroom\, and basement darkrooms. \nOne of Sidney’s particular photography loves is shooting sports. In high school and college is was an official school sports photographer shooting football\, baseball\, swimming\, golf\, basketball (nothing better than sitting on the hardwood under the basket!). When his son Dan became his high school’s football manager Sidney spent Saturday afternoons walking the sidelines and end zones snapping action shots. After shooting about 20 rolls of Ektachrome each game\, getting it processed and scanned he went digital choosing Canon over Nikon. He still has his original Minolta SR-1 and has been recently shooting with it. \n   \nGeometrical Shapes with Kathryn Mohrman\nKathryn Mohrman \n“Geometry is the foundation of all painting\,” said Albrecht Durer\, the famous painter and printmaker of the German Renaissance. In fact\, geometry is the foundation of all forms of art\, from sculpture to photography. Almost any artistic work can be analyzed in terms of curves and straight lines\, ovals and rectangles. \nThe photographs in this exhibit emphasize the fundamental geometry of architecture. My eye is drawn to the shapes of bridges and facades and domes and stairways. As I travel in various countries I am attracted to the people\, of course\, but also to the monuments they have created in stone and steel and glass. From New York City to Istanbul\, Ireland to Uzbekistan\, I marvel at the creativity of various cultures across the centuries as they combine various shapes in their buildings in different and intriguing ways. \nKathryn Mohrman became seriously interested in photography about a decade ago\, when she received her first “real” digital camera for a safari in Botswana. She then became fascinated by the options available with manual controls instead of automatic–and the rest is history. \nShe joined NVPS in 2015 when she retired from a career in academia. She has served as secretary/historian of the club and has participated in various anonymous critiques and member displays. \nHer work has emphasized the different cultures she has visited in her travels around the world\, although this exhibit does not have humans in any of the images. In recent months her travels and photography have been limited to locations close to home\, but she has used her time productively with online classes and webinars on Photoshop\, creativity\, and compositing.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Louise is founder and owner of Bella Vista Photography in Raleigh\, NC. For over 25 years\, Mary Louise has specialized in photography from locations across the U.S. and throughout the world. Her favorite subject matter includes country landscapes\, nature close-ups\, interesting architectural details and abstracts. She draws inspiration from a variety of visual arts to produce photographs often described as “painterly”. Her photographs are about intriguing juxtapositions of vibrant colors\, contrasting tones\, distinctive shapes\, and unique textures. Her ambition is to incorporate the beauty of painting in the clarity of photography. \nTrained in the use of both 4×5 and 35mm cameras\, today Mary Louise shoots with full-frame DSLR cameras\, producing photographs in color and black and white. She studied photography through the University of California\, Berkeley and Santa Cruz extension programs\, and the Washington School of Photography. She is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association. She is also a juried member of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen where in 2020 she was awarded with the distinction of “Master Artisan in Fine Art Photography” by a jury panel\, in recognition of achievement in the three benchmarks of excellence in craftsmanship\, resolved design and unique voice. Her fine art photography is in private\, university and corporate collections in over 40 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows\, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars\, magazines\, books and websites including various projects with National Geographic maps. \nMary Louise is a regular speaker and competition judge for photography clubs in the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic region. DESCRIPTION: \nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurves by Mike Whalen\nMost photography is based on capturing real\, easily recognizable subjects such as a people\, places\, or things. Abstract photography is different. Instead\, the objective is to look for simpler visual elements such as: shapes and colors; lines and curves; textures\, tones\, and patterns. These simple elements become the dominant points of interest in abstract photos. \n \n\n\n The sources could be either naturally occurring or man-made\, and of any size. Frequently\, small areas of larger physical objects can make interesting abstracts. The images could be found as-is\, staged or generated in-camera. They could also be further altered within a computer via post-processing to produce even more dramatic results. \n \n\n\n The scope of  abstract photography is quite broad and definitions may vary depending on who you talk to or what you read. To add even more confusion\, images could be totally abstract – having no connection to physical reality\, or partially abstract – by mixing both physical and abstract elements together in the same photo.   \n \n\n\n This presentation will show a broad variety of both abstract and semi-abstract images\, and in many cases\, how they were created will be described. All images are photographs or derived from photographs.\n \n\n\n Bio\n\n\n As a teen\, Mike learned a few basic photo tips from his father\, an artist and photographer. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that\, played with several digital point-and-shoots.  However\, his interest became more passionate after purchasing a basic DSLR in 2006.\n \n\n\n Mike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. He held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including President in 2013. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Cruising the Southern Caribbean with Kevin Linde
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Linde will be discussing and presenting images from a time when he cruised the southern Caribbean. \nKevin was born and raised in Johannesburg\, South Africa and moved to Canada in 1992 where he met his wonderful wife\, Debby. In 1998 they moved to Northern Virginia with their 2-year-old son\, Ryan. Their second son\, Jared\, was born in 1999 when they moved into their current house in Fairfax. The boys are now in college\, with one at the University of Alabama and the other at George Mason. They also have two dogs that are wonderful photography subjects. Kevin currently work as a physical therapist at his own private clinic\, which he founded in 2003\, in Fairfax City. \nKevin became interested in photography about 13 years ago when he bought his first Canon DSLR. Prior to that he had a Pentax SLR\, which he owned for about 5 years prior to switching to digital. Kevin learned the basics with this camera but was never that interested in photography. The change to digital provided instant feedback\, which allowed him to learn beyond the basics a lot faster. Kevin also enjoyed the post processing which he is constantly learning to this day. \nKevin currently uses Canon equipment that he has accumulated over the years. His favorite subject to shoot is motor racing\, which is influenced by his interest in the sport. Not far behind is anything else interesting to shoot. The great thing about photography is that you can take a photo of almost anything out there and make it something unique. \nKevin has been a member of NVPS for only one year but has enjoyed meeting some wonderful people and some great photographers. Kevin enjoys sharing his photos but also enjoy seeing the great talent of others. He is not sure at this point in time where his photography may take him\, but until then\, he will continue to learn as much as he can and will never stop learning.
