SUMMARY:Field Trips: Summit Point Raceway
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE (9/7/21): Summit Point has agreed to waive entrance fees for NVPS members and asks in exchange that we provide some of our best shots to use for social media (with credit). We would like to supply a list of the members who will attend and ask you to email the field-trip coordinators (contact information can be found at Board Contacts) by Thursday\, September 16\, 2021 if you will attend. \nUPDATE (9/7/21): The Drift Nirvana event has been moved to another date but there will still be an exciting motorcycle event on September 19. The Porsche Club of America event will also take place and\, although private\, can apparently be seen through the gate. \n\n  \nPhoto Credit: Kevin Egan\nBrush up on your panning skills and get ready for some high speed fun!  We’re heading to Summit Point Motorsports Park for some car and motorcycle action.  Summit Point has three tracks and there will be events on all three: (1) Drift Nirvana 2.0\, in which cars “drift\,” or skid\, leaving smoke in their wakes; (2) a motorcycle event; and (3) a Porsche Club of America event.  This will be a chance to get the cars and motorcycles in focus with a nice background blur or get some nice motion blur on the vehicles.  We should also be able to get close-ups of cars and motorcycles. \nWhat: \nSummit Point Motorsports Park is a road racing and driver training facility located in Summit Point\, WV.  It is about a 1.25 hour drive from Merrifield\, Virginia. \nThe events are as follows: \n\nSummit Point Circuit: Porsche Club of America Potomac – Rock the Summit (private)\nPotomac Pad:            Drift Nirvana – Team V2.0\nShenandoah Circuit:  Evolve GT Track Days (motorcycles)\n\n Equipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. \nTripods can be used but are not necessary\nBring water\, snacks and sunscreen (there are restrooms and a snack bar)\nA travel chair can be used since no one is permitted on the bleachers\n*A reflective vest is required and we must supply our own.  They can be purchased from Amazon for $13\n\nWaivers will need to be signed in order to be on the grounds \nWhen:Sunday\, September 19\, 2021 from 8:30 am – 12 p.m.  \nEvents normally run from 9 a.m. to 12 or 1 p.m.\, but there may be an afternoon session so you may opt to stay for the day.  The Shenandoah Circuit is subject to a “quiet hour” for church from 11 a.m. – noon.  \nThe Drift Nirvana fee is $10/spectator.  There is usually no charge for the motorcycle event and the Porsche event is private (and no charge)\, but you can see it from outside the gate. \nWhere:We’ll meet in the parking lot of the red building just beyond the entrance to the park at 8:30 a.m. so we can be positioned for the 9 a.m. start times.  There appear to be two entrances on Motorsports Park Circle. We will meet at the first one off Summit Point Road.  You should see the building immediately after turning onto Motorsports Park Circle. \nThe rules and regulations for the park are here: \nhttps://summitpoint-raceway.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Park-Rules-and-Regulations.pdf \nSummit Point Motorsports Park201 Motorsports Park CircleSummit Point\, WV 25446 \n We hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training - “That is So Old” by Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nThe club competition in January will have the theme of “Old”.  For September\, long time club member\, Ginger Werz-Petricka will address some of the possibilities for meeting the criteria of the theme.  \nOld (Competition Date: January 18\, 2022): People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: \n\nHaving lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples.\nMade or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. \n\nNo dead\, or dying\, flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old\, but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nFor this presentation Ginger will be discussing the possible pitfalls of photographing for a concept as opposed to a subject.  She will be showing images of her own as well as those of several other club members while discussing what makes an image depict ‘old’\, how does an image read and what has impact. \nBiography: \nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009.  Over the years she has been involved with Education and Training\, and Members Gallery\, but is mostly known as co-chair of the Portfolio Project.  Her photography often reflects her interest in shape and texture\, with a love of dramatic light.  She also has a special interest in photographing the abandoned\, old buildings in particular.

SUMMARY:Programs: Seeing Out of the Box: Abstract Photography Opportunities in the DC Area with E. David Luria
DESCRIPTION:Put your thumb and forefinger together into a small circle\, hold it up to one eye\, close the other eye. Look through that circle: that’s how your camera lens sees the world\, just a small\, tight area\, no peripheral vision.  \nAnd it is also the “secret sauce” of abstract photography technique\, which is the subject of E. David Luria’s presentation on September 7 entitled “Seeing Out of the Box: Abstract Photography Opportunities in the DC Area”. \nDavid maintains that unique abstract images surround us everywhere\, in our own backyard\, on the sidewalk\, in the ribbed patterns of a fallen leaf\, on tie-dye T-shirts\, in a stack of bicycles or nested chairs\, in rug patterns\, on mural art\, graffiti\, on wallpaper\, in glass reflections\, in stained glass windows\, and in art museums.  Abstract photography enhances our photo portfolios with  colorful\, wild and crazy images\, He also maintains it helps train our brains to think out of the box\, look at problems in new ways AND to come up with those clever “Aha!”  answers to crossword puzzle clues!  Best of all\, no special equipment is needed for abstract photography: a phone is fine! \nIn this Zoom talk David will show us examples of abstract shots he has done around the DC area\, explaining when and where he got the shots\, so that club members will be inspired to go out\, squinting through the circles of their thumbs and forefingers. to find similar jewels of art wherever they may be! \nDavid Luria is a professional architectural photographer and founder of the popular Washington Photo Safari program (www.washingtonphotosafari.com) . \nSince the program began in 1999\, David and his 11 fellow instructors have trained over 39\,200 amateur photographers from 50 states and 53 countries in 29 different areas of photography\, such as travel\, architecture\, nighttime\, portraits\, event\, street\, nature and wildlife photography and in Lightroom and Photoshop post-processing techniques.  Training an average of 5 photographers every day\, 365 days a year for 22+ years\, his 6\,000 small-group safaris have taken place in 186 different locations in 11 states\, 30 cities\, and 8 countries around the world\, including photo cruises in the Caribbean and in Europe. Several NVPS members have participated in his safaris \nDavid’s Washington Photo Safari has received hundreds of 5-star reviews on all major search engines\, and it benefits from high customer loyalty\, with about one-third of all his clients coming back as repeat customers\, year after year\, 750 of them participating in an average of 9 safaris apiece. In 2019 it was ranked among the top two Best Photography Services in the DC Area by the readers of City Paper. Trip Advisor now rates Washington Photo Safari at No. 3 out of 89 outdoor activities in Washington DC. \nBorn in Hamburg and raised in New York City\, David has lived in his adopted city of Washington DC for more than 50 years\, and so he claims to know where all the good pictures are! He has photographed over 3\,500 apartment\, hotel and restaurant properties in the DC area\, plus dozens of events and conventions\, and he is a frequent speaker at local camera clubs\, including ours. His work can be viewed at www.edavidluriaphotography.smugmug.com. \nAn honors graduate of Amherst College and a US Army veteran\, David is fluent in Spanish\, French\, German and English\, spent 32 years as a senior executive working for international non-profit organizations like CARE\, Inc\, worked 6 years in Colombia and Panama\,   and studied photography with a protégé of famed French photographer Henri Cartier- Bresson at the Parsons School of Design in Paris\, France. He claims his proudest achievements are his 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Marines with the Silent Drill Platoon march for “Pass in Review” during a Tuesday Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial\, Arlington\, Va.\, June 8\, 2021. The hosting official for the evening was Mr. Robert D. Hogue\, counsel for the Commandant of the Marine Corps\, and The Honorable Kirsten E. Gillibrand\, U.S. Senator for New York\, was the guest of honor. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jason Kolela)\nYour field trip coordinators are excited to bring you this summer-time field trip.  The Sunset Parade occurs every Tuesday evening from late May to early August at the Marine Corps War Memorial.  This free event provides an opportunity to listen to “The Commandant’s Own” US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and witness the precision drills performed by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. \nWhen the show is over\, there are even more opportunities to capture iconic shots of the Lincoln Memorial\, Washington Monument\, and US Capitol Dome from the base of the Netherlands Carillon.  I also feel the Marine Corps War Memorial is a very photogenic subject too. \nWhat: \nThe Army has their Golden Knights.  The Navy has their Blue Angles.  The Air Force has their Thunderbirds.  Only the Marine Corps has a land based performance such as this.  Let the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps and Silent Drill Platoon impress you with a demonstration of their skills and training.  Did I mention it’s FREE? \nThe performance starts at 6:45pm and runs for one hour.  After the performance\, I highly recommend the short 5 minute walk South to the base of the Netherlands Carillon to get some iconic shots of the Washington monuments lined up.  Then when you’re done with that\, why not go back to the Marine Corps War Memorial and take some shots around there.  I find that monument very photogenic\, especially after sunset. \nMasks are not required to attend provided you’ve been fully vaccinated.  It’s difficult to judge how many people will attend these performances\, but I the memorial sits on a large plot of land so outdoor physical distancing should be possible. \nMore information is found on the USMC website: https://www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/Sunset-Parade/ \nand here: https://dcphotoguide.com/marine-corps-sunset-parade-iwo-jima-memorial/ \nSunset is expected at 8:17 p.m. (EDT) \nMaster GySgt. Keith Martinez\, drum major\, “The Commandant’s Own\,” U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps\, conducts the Marines during a Tuesday Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial\, Arlington\, VA\, June 15\, 2021. The hosting official for the evening was Brig. Gen. Lorna Mahlock\, Director\, Information\, Command\, Control\, Communications and Computers\, and Ms. Gwynne Shotwell\, President and Chief Operations Officer of SpaceX\, was the guest of honor. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jason Kolela)\nEquipment: \n\n24-70 will give you a nice wide shot with the memorial\, but I suspect you’ll get more use out of a 70-200 for full size individuals and small group shots.\nConsider bringing longer lenses of 300-500mm to get in tight. Marines like to keep the audience at a safe distance and you might want that extra reach.\nI did not see guidance on USMC website regarding flashes\, but I would ask that you leave the flash at home. Hopefully\, there will be plenty of glorious warm sunset light that comes naturally without distraction.\nTripods are permissible provided they do not impede on the enjoyment of others.\nBring a mask (to keep on hand). Bug spray for those pesky evening gnats.  And a water bottle because it will be warm and humid.\nSeating is not available\, just plenty of grass. Lawn chairs and folding stools are permissible.\n\nWhen: \nTuesday\, August 3\, 2021 from 6pm – 9pmRain date on Tuesday\, August 10\, 2021 from 6pm – 9pm \nWhere: \nLet’s meet in the NW edge of the USMC War Memorial grounds next to the visitor parking lot (38.8910\, -77.0706). \nThere may be porta potties nearby\, but no other facilities will be available at the memorial. \nParking at the memorial is not available on Tuesday nights.  You may get lucky from the limited street parking in the neighborhoods North or West of the memorial.  However there are plenty of paid parking options between the memorial and the Roslyn metro station that will get you within a couple blocks. \nYou may also consider using the Roslyn metro station and walking about three blocks (10-15 minutes).  The Arlington Cemetery metro station also stops nearby a bike path that will wind your way to the memorial (sounds tricky). \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n*Color photographs courtesy Sgt. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Photo By: Rena Schild \nWe’re back with this club favorite\, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.  NVPS frequently visits this destination at this time of year because the lotus flowers and water lilies are in bloom.  If you haven’t got your flower shot for next season’s themed competition\, here is a great opportunity.  If you’re not into flowers\, consider the opportunities to capture images of dragon flies\, birds\, turtles\, frogs\, and more. \nWhat:  \nKenilworth Aquatic Gardens is home to heron\, birds\, dragon flies\, and amphibians.  You’ll also notice the rather obvious shallow ponds filled with lotus and water lilies. \nYou’re welcome to wander along the paths that separate the ponds in search of your next image.  When you’re done \nPhoto By: Steven Glintz \nwith the lotus and lilies\, you can take the boardwalk at the far end of the park out to a viewing platform where along the way you can typically find herons and other birds. \nThis is a very popular destination at this time of year.  Please be patient and locate your subjects while maintaining social distancing from other photographers.  The National Park Service warns that if the park becomes too crowded they may temporarily close the park gates to limit people on site. \nSunrise is expected at 5:52 a.m. (EDT) \nPhoto By: Rena Schild \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. Those with an interest in birding may want to bring a lens with 300+mm range.  A macro lens may also come in handy if you are interested in dragon flies.\nDon’t forget your polarizer and diffuser/reflector.\nTripods are allowed everywhere.\nBring a mask\, the National Park Service requires them.\nBug/tick spray and sunscreen.\nWater – the weather is expected to be very hot and humid.\n\nPhoto By: Steven Glintz \nWhen: \nSaturday\, July 10\, 2021 from 8am – 11am\nRain date on Sunday\, July 11\, 2021 from 8am – 11am \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot to share any updated news.  It’s only a couple minutes walk to the gardens. \nPlease note\, the visitor center\, restrooms\, and water fountain will be closed.  There will be porta potties. \nKenilworth Aquatic Gardens\n1550 Anacostia Avenue\, NE\nWashington DC 20019 \nParking is free. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Shenandoah National Park\, Big Meadow
DESCRIPTION:The drive to the Big Meadows inside Shenandoah National Park from Fairfax is just over two hours.  This area has been chosen for its wildlife\, landscapes\, waterfalls and other diverse nature photography opportunities.  It also happens to be one of the best destinations we can occupy to avoid COVID.\n\nJune is a particularly fortunate time as the fawns should be out frolicking with mamma doe.  The trails surrounding Big Meadows campgrounds have also frequently reported black bears.  The nearby waterfalls may not have as strong a flow\, but they should also provide unique opportunities for those who are looking for a hike to go with their photography.  Others will find many opportunities to pull off the side of Skyline Drive to find inspirations a few hundred feet from the side of the road.  (Skyline Drive is about 106 miles long and takes about 3 hours to drive.  Add in frequent stops and you’re looking at a better part of a full day of shooting.)\n\nThe Shenandoah Valley also makes for a spectacular subject should conditions present themselves for a sunset shot or nighttime astro-photography. In fact\, this field trip offers so much to photograph that you might just want to include an overnight stay at the Big Meadows Lodge or at a nearby accommodation.\n\nBig Meadows Lodge\nSkyline Drive Mile 51\nShenandoah Natl Park\, VA 22835\n\nhttps://www.goshenandoah.com/lodging/big-meadows-lodge\n\nNote: new COVID cancellation policies include no-charge cancellations “by 4:00 pm EDT 2 days before the scheduled arrival date.”\n\nWhat:\n\nAs mentioned above\, this destination is abundant in all things wild\, from wildlife to wildflowers.  On June 12 (or June 13 in case of rain)\, we’ll meet in the afternoon at the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center to plan our late afternoon photography activities.  From there\, we’ll decide if it’s best to trek the Big Meadows loop trail across the road for deer\, explore the campground trails for bears\, or start the landscape hunt early.  We’ve timed this field-trip in hopes of capturing the fawns and cubs that inhabit the Big Meadows area\, but there are opportunities for other nature inspired photography you may not want to miss.\n\nSunrise is expected at 5:49 a.m. (EDT)\nSunset is expected at 8:38 p.m. (EDT)\n\nMilky Way will be visible for most of the night.\n\nMoon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase (4%\, New moon on June 10)  https://www.moongiant.com/calendar/june/2021/\n\n\nEquipment:\n\n Any lens between 18-200mm will satisfy most landscape needs. For wildlife captures\, I recommend 300mm+.  Wildlife are accustomed to humans\, but you still need to keep your distance.\n Astro-photographers should bring fast wide angle lenses.\n( f/5.6 okay\, f/4 better\, f/2.8 even better )\n I never leave the house without a polarizer.  Bring your other neutral density and graduated filters to help balance your exposures.\n Tripods are allowed everywhere.\n Don’t forget a spare battery and memory card(s).\n Bring a light jacket for higher altitude temperatures and comfortable shoes.\n Bring a mask and some personal hand sanitizer\n\nRemember\, fuel is available near the visitor center\, but it can be a bit expensive.  Be sure to fuel up prior to entering the park as there only three gas stations along the drive (milepost 24\, milepost 51\, and milepost 79).\n\nWhen:\n\nSaturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\nRain date on Sunday\, June 13\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\n\nWhere:\n\nWe will meet outside the Harry F. Byrd\, Sr. Visitor Center (main parking lot) at 4pm for a meet and greet.  We’ll also discuss the conditions and review plans for the late afternoon and evening.\n\nThe visitor center will be staffed outside by rangers from 9am – 5pm.  The building itself is not expected to be open.  Restrooms are expected to be open at the visitor center.\n\nParking is free at the visitor center\, however Shenandoah National Park charges a fee to enter.\n\n $30 / car provides unlimited entry for the vehicle and all passengers for the next seven days.\n $0 if you have either a Shenandoah Annual Pass or America the Beautiful (aka inter-agency pass)\n\nWe hope you can join us!\n\nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021\n\n*Wildlife photos by Stan Bysshe\n*Landscape photos by Alan Goldstein

SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition and Awards Banquet with Judge Jean Pierre Plé
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our very last meeting of the 2020 – 2021 season\, NVPS End-of-Year Awards Night! Since we unfortunately cannot get together for an actual dinner and happy hour\, it will be held virtually (via Zoom). We will have the full program of awards\, just no food. Any eating and drinking will be on your own! \nThe official program will begin at 7:00 pm with an expected social time to begin at 6:30 pm. \nJean Pierre Plé has been chosen to judge winning images from the 2020-2021 NVPS competitions for the end-of-year competition. \nJean-Pierre is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to. He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes\, lines\, or contrast in color or tones. \nHis photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature\, landscapes\, abstracts and architecture\, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography\, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner. Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work\, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography. While he employs DSLR\, mirrorless and iPhone cameras\, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow\, methodical\, and mechanical components of large format. \nHe is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club. His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington\, DC area\, including Washington Printmakers Gallery\, Waverly Street Gallery\, Photoworks Gallery\, Nature Visions\, Herndon ArtSpace\, the Joe Miller Gallery\, PhotoWalk in Crystal City\, Touchstone Gallery\, Lowe House Building\, and the Dupont Underground. His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Yellowstone with Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS for ten years. He has served on multiple committees and is a past President. Over the years he has given numerous presentations ranging from Underwater photography to Shooting in Crappy Conditions. His April Members Forum talk will be on photographing  Yellowstone National Park in the winter. \nOver the past seven years Stan has been a guide on sixteen photo tours to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem which includes YNP and the Grand Tetons National Park. His last four trips were during the winter season\, and this rapidly became his favorite time of the year to visit the park. While this is by far and away the most challenging season to be in Yellowstone\, it can be the most rewarding. \nStan will talk about why Yellowstone in the winter is such a magical place\, how and where you can get the best images\, some techniques for shooting in the winter and how to try and stay warm in a region that routinely records the lowest temperatures in the lower forty eight States. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Exploring Delaware with Deb and Art Rose & Digital: Patterns and Graphics with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Prints (Virtually): Exploring Delaware with Deb and Art Rose\nArt and Deb have enjoyed having two “home” states; one in Alexandria Virginia\, and the other in Bethany Beach Delaware. The two locations are polar opposites\, yet complement each other beautifully. \nAlexandria offers the bustle of historic Old Town\, Northern Virginia\, and DC museums and landmarks. They enjoy photographing local places such as Huntley Meadows\, Dyke Marsh\, Mason Neck\, Conowingo Dam\, Battlefields\, and Shenandoah. \nBethany Beach offers the quiet of the ocean\, natural vistas\, and a slower paced lifestyle. They enjoy photographing sunrise on the beach (well\, Deb more so than Art at 5 AM)\, native birds\, and sunsets on the Bay at the Ocean View VFW. \nWith their international travel on hold during the pandemic\, and closure of museums and other sites in Virginia\, they spent more time in Delaware exploring the “First State”\, and made some delightful photography discoveries. They explored many sites including the capitol buildings in Dover\, National Wildlife Refuges of Prime Hook and Bombay Hook\, Assawoman Wildlife Areas\, Great Cypress Swamp\, Delaware Botanical Gardens\, James Farm Ecological Preserve\, Abbott’s\, Warren and Double Mills\, Slaughter Beach\, and Lavender Fields. \nArt and Deb’s interest in photography began over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, Art as a chemical engineer and Deb as a pediatric physical therapist\, they have been living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography. Past travels through North\, Central and South America included the Panama Canal\, Galapagos\, Ecuador\, Peru and Machu Picchu. Travels through Europe and Asia included Singapore\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Hong Kong\, Italy\, Greece and Malta. They enjoy all types of photography encountered on their travels: landscape\, street\, wildlife\, architectural\, night sky and every flavor in-between. \nMembers of NVPS since 2018\, Art and Deb enjoy learning and developing creative skills to enhance their photography. Deb blends watercolor painting and brush effects with her photography to create photo artistic pieces\, and Art enjoys applying new techniques to landscape\, wildlife and still-life photos. \n“We see photography as a way to connect with others\, capture the experiences of new places\, and discover different perspectives of familiar places”. \n \n  \n  \nDigital: Patterns and Graphics with Wayne Guenther\n  \nWayne Guenther \nWhen Wayne joined Gallery West (Alexandria VA) artist’s cooperative in 1995\, he was an artist without an identity\, a style.  Wayne shot whatever he liked\, and never examined why he liked the subject or settled on a particular composition.  That gradually changed as he created new work monthly and received a lot of feedback about the “graphic nature” of his subjects and compositions.  By 2001 Wayne had a second solo show that was nearly all graphic interpretations of furniture\, and his statement started with “I like angles\, lines and curves\, so furniture is a natural subject”.  Wayne’s third solo show at the gallery in 2003 was based entirely on interpretations of stairs\, which have lines and curves of course.  Jumping 18 years to today\, Wayne has become a “generalist” in that extensive travel has given him so many subjects to photograph\, but his underlying compositional instinct is still graphic based.  This digital presentation will show examples of this result. \nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions. \nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic.  He switched to the micro-four-thirds system in 2014 and uses Olympus E-M1 bodies and a combination of Olympus and Lumix/Panasonic lenses. \n

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Brookside Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Brookside Gardens is part of the Wheaton Regional Park and is operated by Montgomery Parks. This award-winning 50-acre public display garden has a wide array of subjects to satisfy the landscape and garden photographer. The location boasts excellent water features such as a small pond with reflection terrace and a Japanese tea house\, a brook connecting the pond to Pine Lake (further south)\, and an aquatic garden. May and early June are especially colorful months for Maryland and Virginia so we can expect many of the various gardens maintained by the park to be in full bloom. \nAdmission to the gardens is free and no permits are required for non-commercial photographers. Brookside Gardens asks that photographers not disturb the gardens\, block paths\, or interfere with other visitors’ enjoyment of the gardens.  (Brookside Gardens Photo Policy) \nWhat: \nThis outdoor venue will give us a very colorful way of keeping our social distancing up while we ride out the COVID variants. We’ll meet at the visitor’s center where we can say hello and get caught up. Groups can break off to start capturing wider landscape shots found by walking south of the visitor’s center (follow trails leading to your right). Or if you’re more inclined to start working the garden vignettes\, follow the trails east of the visitor’s center (generally trails that lead to the left). Either way\, you can’t lose. \nUnfortunately\, the conservatory building is closed. That means there will be no access to the greenhouse or the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. When they reopen\, it is recommended you return and pay the small fee to enter. \nSunrise is expected at 5:56 a.m (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 18-200mm should satisfy most needs. A macro lens is also recommended.\nTripods are allowed provided they don’t destroy the gardens or get in the way of other visitors.\nHandheld toys such as lights\, crystal balls\, reflectors\, and diffusers are welcome (keep a low profile to avoid any suspicions that we know what we’re doing).\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, May 15\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.\nRain date on Sunday\, May 16\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. \nThe visitor’s center opens at 10a.m. \nWhere: \n1800 Glenallan Avenue\nWheaton\, MD 20902 \nWe will meet outside the visitor’s center (main parking lot) at 7a.m. for a brief meet and greet. \nPlenty of free parking is available at the main entrance/visitor’s center. Additional parking is also available at the conservatory entrance on Glenallen Avenue. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \n  \n* Photographs courtesy of Rena Schild.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Maine with Mike Kane & Digital: Passion for Architecture with Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Maine with Michael Kane\nMike Kane will present a sampling of images from his explorations of the mid-coast of Maine. \nPhotography started early for Mike\, while in high school he picked up an Argus C3 rangefinder and began teaching himself how to make images. He moved onto using a Minolta SRT-101 during his college years while dabbling in his own darkroom but life soon brought a career and children which left little time for exploring with his camera. \nFollowing a 30 year career in local government\, Mike bought a digital camera to reacquaint himself with photography. He joined NVPS in 2009 to meet other photographers and to learn as much as he could about digital photography. \nHis passion for photography grew\, he graduated from the Washington School of Photography in 2011 and had success selling his fine art prints and instructing introductory classes in digital photography. \nIn 2013 Mike and his wife left Northern Virginia for the mid-coast of Maine where he has a small real estate photography business and ample opportunities for expanding his personal catalog of images and prints. \nWith being able to re-connect with friends on Zoom\, Mike re-joined NVPS in 2020. \n  \n \n  \nPassion for Architecture with Judy Guenther\nJudy Guenther specifically loves the many opportunities provided by architecture: rotundas\, stairs\, bridges\, cultural icons\, specific architects\, skylines\, cathedrals\, exterior\, interior\, reflections\, details\, abstracts and cultural. She has narrowed down the focus of her presentation tonight to the architects Frank Gehry\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, and Santiago Calatrava\, rotundas\, stairs\, and cultural buildings. \nJudy joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer and enjoys post-processing and creativity. She has spent this period of Covid isolation without travel by working on photos from past travels. Judy is a member of the Art League at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria\, the Maryland Federation for the Arts\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Group. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects including architecture\, landscapes\, abstracts\, colors\, nature\, wildlife and cultural portraits. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Enid A. Haupt Garden / Smithsonian Castle
DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s Enid A. Haupt Garden sits at the center of the city block framed between 12th St. and 7th St. SW and Independence Ave and Jefferson Dr SW.  Included in this block are a number of iconic and unique structures including (but not limited to) the Smithsonian Castle\, Arts and Industries Building\, and Hirshhorn Museum.  Between these structures\, the Smithsonian maintains a variety of gardens and outdoor vignettes including the Haupt Garden\, Moongate Garden\, Mary Livingston Ripley Garden\, and more.  This spot is a gem on The Mall of Washington DC and ideal for our purposes allowing us to spread out. \nYour field trip coordinators have chosen a date in mid-April in hopes of avoiding any potential leftover crowds caused by the cherry blossoms.  At the time of this writing\, all museums are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Also in the news are the renovations planned for the Haupt Garden and immediate area.  However\, we have received word\, the construction planned for 2021 will now begin in 2023. \nWhat: \nIn this field trip\, we’ll tip toe through the tulips while gawking at the architecture.  The Smithsonian Castle and the Enid A. Haupt Garden will be the epicenter of this field trip\, but you are welcome and encouraged to explore other vignettes including the Arts and Industries Building\, the Moongate Garden\, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, and all the spaces in between.  Each destination offers engaging subject matter. \nPlease note\, tripods are not allowed on Smithsonian grounds (https://gardens.si.edu/plan-your-visit/#photo).  I have been approached by security while carrying a tripod to question my intentions and remind me of their policy.  Most in security are nice about it\, but I recommend for your comfort\, leave the tripod home or in the car trunk. \nSunrise is expected at 6:39 a.m. \nEquipment: \nMost any lens between 24-200 will satisfy your needs.  Consider a macro lens as well if you have steady hands and or electronic stabilization. \n** Remember\, tripods are not allowed on Smithsonian grounds ** \nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 10\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a. m \nRain date on Sunday\, April 11\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet outside the gate to the Haupt Garden bordering Independence Ave. at 7am for a brief meet and greet. \nOne of my favorite free places to park is outside the US Botanical Garden on Maryland Ave.  However\, you can pay for street parking at the electronic kiosks\, available on Jefferson Dr. in-front of the Smithsonian Castle.  There is typically a three hour maximum. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz \nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \nField Trip Coordinators contact information can be found at Board Contacts. \n* Photographs of the castle and gardens courtesy of NVPS member Steven Glintz.

SUMMARY:Programs: Psychology of Photography with Nic Stover
DESCRIPTION:Nic Stover created the Psychology of Photography as a way to help photographers think of ways to think beyond the basics of taking pictures and into the world of creating images. The Psychology of Photography explores 5 different areas that encompass the bigger part of the artistic and creative process. \nFirst\, we will look at Sensations and Perceptions which is how do we perceive the world and make order out of it\, we will also look at Beliefs and Creativity\, finding some of what we believe in and how do we create.  But no part of perceptions and beliefs are complete unless we look at Expression and Interpretation the parts of us that is about how do we interpret scenes and develop them (and ourselves) through processing. The final portion is about our Formulation and Evolution where we explore what kind of photographer\, we are\, want to be\, and where we are going. With the final piece being Reflection and Refinement of how we can put ourselves and our processes into a state of constant renewal. \nThrough our time together with Nic we will look at how are we drawn to patterns\, shapes\, lines\, and what do they mean to our subconscious. We will also explore some of the different schools of psychology and how the brain forms thoughts and how you can work with that\, examine some of the models of creativity and how we can look to follow and understand where we are in the creative process and understand that there are definable stages of our growth that we experience as photographers. \nAbout Nic Stover \nNic Stover was raised in the high mountains of Western Colorado on a single magazine subscription to National Geographic and only 5 television channels\, where the only shows his family regularly watched were Nature (PBS) and the Tour De France. It was here that his love for adventure\, the outdoors\, and photography took shape. \nStover is based in San Luis Obispo\, California and focuses on landscape photography classes and workshops encouraging his class participants to Develop their skills\, Explore their capabilities\, and to Create meaningful work. \nNic Stover Photography exists to help photographers understand the unique perspectives that assist in the discovery of their capabilities\, while enabling a deeper connection with themselves and others through creative expression.  Through his classes\, webinars\, tutorials\, and presentations Nic works with people of all ages\, backgrounds\, experiences\, and desires focused around a dialog on how we can thrive in our own unique creative and artistic process. \nHis landscape photography work has taken him across the globe — from the backcountry of Greenland\, to the windswept mountains of Patagonia\, and the frigid extremes of Alaska.  His portfolio of work encompasses desert\, ocean\, night\, and mountain photography.  Nic also enjoys showcasing the amazing the places that are unique to the Central Coast\, from sea caves to sand dunes\, and its dramatic coastal landscapes. \nAdditional information can be found at www.stoverphoto.com

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique with Lynn Cates and Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Willa Friedman \nLynn Cates \nTake this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are using new software to process; images you like but feel may need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images.   You can also ask questions a bit more anonymously using Zoom chat sent by direct message only to E & T coordinator Eva Lanyi. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, March 22\, 2021\, to allow time for Mike Whalen to anonymize the images and for Lynn and Willa to review them before the March 30 meeting. \nYou can submit up to three images.  Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued. Beyond that\, Lynn and Willa will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease attach your images to an email and send it to critique-2020@nvps.org\, sized the same as for competition:  jpeg images with \na maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend the resolution of your jpeg images be 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI) for best results on Zoom.  If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions? Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi. Her contact information can be found at Board Contacts.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Macro Photography with Kieulan Nguyen & Digital: FIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China with Kieu-Hahn Vu
DESCRIPTION:Macro Photography with Kieulan Nguyen\nFlower photography is one of few things that Kieulan loves to photograph.   The shapes\, the vibrant colors\, the textures that she always looks for when she takes pictures of flowers.  For the last few year\, Kieulan has evolved her macro photography from traditional floral photography using selective focus to high key flower photography on a light box and especially during 2020 due to Covid 19 she has picked up a new way to express the beauty of flowers that she captured and then digitally painted them in Photoshop. \nKieulan considers herself as a beginner of floral digital artist and continues to expand her love for flowers.  From taking a picture of a flower and then painting it some how she feels she has come a complete cycle of her creativity in creating a beautiful flower image. \n \n  \nFIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China with Kieu-Hahn Vu\nKieu-Hanh’s presentation is a compilation of her photos from her FIAP Photo Meeting in Shandong\, China in 2017.  Shandong is known as the hometown of Confucius and Mencius.  This photo meeting consists of more than 320 photographers from over 40 countries and regions around the world.  They gathered in Shadong\, China to photograph the traditional culture\, and the natural landscape of Ji’nan\, Tai’an\, Jining\, Liaocheng\, Zaozhuang\, Zibo\, Weifang\, and Qingdao. \nWhile photographers usually learn to take pictures first and then learn how to edit their pictures using post processing tools\, Kieu-Hanh went the unconventional route.  She first learned about the editing tools when she took a computer graphics course in college\, and because she was so interested in those editing tools\, she began learning about photography so that she could apply her skills.  She first picked up a point-and-shoot camera\, and joined the Vietnamese Photographic Society (VNPS) in 2006 to learn how to take pictures.  She has since moved on to several SLR digital cameras\, and currently uses a Canon 7D Mark II.  She is also a member of Photographic Society of America (PSA) and the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).  Since 2009\, she has been a frequent speaker at VNPS’s educational programs\, as well as contributed her written articles on photography techniques.  For the past seven years\, she has also been part of the judging panel in several photo contests and portfolio projects at this camera club. \nKieu-Hanh has been a member of Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) since 2008.  She considers herself as an avid amateur photographer.  She uses photography as ways to relax and to reduce the stress from her hectic lifestyle.  Her main interest is nature photography and photojournalism.  When creating an image\, she tries to convey an idea\, message\, or thought in her image.  Kieu-Hanh has won numerous competitions and awards for her photographs at international\, national\, and local competitions. \nKieu-Hanh is currently working as a Systems Analyst in Washington DC.  She lives with her husband in Fairfax\, Virginia.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Portfolio Project: 2nd Preliminary Review
DESCRIPTION:Second Preliminary Review\, Portfolio Project – features the preliminary review of the second half of this year’s Portfolio Project (PP) submissions.  We have an amazing variety of subject matter and approaches\, some of which have been inspired by the pandemic restrictions surrounding us. Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Willa Siegel\, and Brenda Wilson\, co-chairs of the Portfolio Project will offer their feedback on key aspects of each portfolio presented: the artist statement\, how it reflects the portfolio content\, and the cohesiveness of portfolio images. The preliminary review gives a good opportunity to focus upon the artist statement\, and whether it clearly and concisely tells the viewer what the subject is\, why the artist selected this subject\, and how the goal of the project was accomplished.

SUMMARY:Programs: Chasing The Stars - Capturing The Night Sky with Robert Fawcett
DESCRIPTION:Chasing the Stars – Capturing the Night Sky – a visual presentation of capturing the Milky Way month by month highlighting the season from January to October. Emphasis is placed on the importance of planning to capture in camera a perceived nightscape for a star filled sky (composition). As part of the planning aspect\, Robert will discuss the apps for scouting locations\, positioning and time of day. He will also discuss choosing the right camera equipment\, lenses for a night of shooting along with various types of low-level lighting to employ on your night time experience. As a preface\, Robert will talk about various post-processing techniques to help make decisions on shooting methods for quality night sky images. \nRobert W. Fawcett (Bob) – Retired from 31 years of Government service\, 26 of those years as a Forensic / Scientific / Technical Photographer. Growing up in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania the interest in photography began early with his father taking the family on weekend drives through the country\, taking in the scenery down back roads never explored. Little did Robert know back then it would become a career that would take him on a journey to places around the globe. That journey began in Washington\, D.C. in October of 1985. As he continues the journey\, his plan is to share with others his passion for photography and pass along the experiences from the days of film to the current digital world. From the beginning and up until present Robert have always been a true believer of shooting in a manual mode\, using the three things of what photography is: ISO\, Aperture and Shutter. When mastered one can be in total control of light and the vision in your mind to capture the creative images you desire. \nAdditional information on Robert Fawcett can be found at one of the following links: \nFawcett Photography Adventures\nwww.meetup.com/Fawcett-Photography-Adventures/ \nFawcett Photography\nwww.facebook.com/rfawcettfoto/\nwww.instagram.com/rwfawcett/ \nFine Art America\nwww.rfawcett.com \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum –Planning Travel for Photography with Wayne & Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Travel Planning\nWayne and Judy Guenther found their love of travel when stationed in Germany with the Army in the early 1980’s and subsequently squeezed in trips around work requirement and singing engagements.  In 2009 Judy retired and joined the already-retired Wayne\, and since then they have visited 47 countries\, Antarctica\, and have taken three trans-USA and one Canadian Maritimes road trips. In 2019 they travelled a total of 22 weeks.  Their favorite destination is a toss-up between New Zealand and South Georgia Island\, but their favorite country\, visited numerous times\, is France. \nTheir trips fall into two broad categories: (1) Group trips and (2) Self-Planned trips. Both categories require planning\, and they have found a variety of resources which have made their trips rewarding.  The tools and resources they use are applicable to all the planning types\, varying in their importance.  Regardless of the category or destination. they always look for photographic interest and have a camera handy.  This Member’s Forum will talk about decisions of where\, when\, and how to travel\, and tools and resources that they have found useful to that end. \n  \nBios for Wayne and Judy Guenther\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne sang in local performing ensembles for many years\, one of which rehearsed on Tuesday nights\, so he didn’t join NVPS until 2015. He was awarded the Class 3 Digital Photographer of the Year designation for 2016-2017 and was judged Best in Show for his landscape photo in the 2018 Nature Visions exposition. \nJudy Guenther shared her love of travel and adventure with Wayne\, but her latent interest in photography didn’t begin to blossom until 2009 when she moved from her point-and-shoot to a Nikon D90 and enthusiastically embraced both retirement travel and the enjoyment of finding interesting subjects.  Wayne obligingly passed along more equipment and advice (why does the aperture get smaller when the number get bigger was never satisfactorily answered)\, and near-constant practice and two Allison Shaw week-long classes and one with Nevada Wier quickly honed her skills.  Her latent artistic esthetics came into their own with even more travel that introduced new subjects like wildlife\, landscapes\, abstracts\, and architecture.  Like Wayne\, she retired from the singing group that conflicted and joined NVPS in 2015. She has received awards both in Nature Visions and NVPS\, is an active member of The Art League in Alexandria\, Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis\, and the F11 Women’s Photography group. \nBoth Wayne and Judy converted to the Micro Four-thirds system in 2014 and use Olympus E-M1 cameras with a variety of Olympus\, Lumix\, and Sigma lenses. \nWinterthur\, Delaware

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Canadian Rockies with Jack Ledgerwood & Digital: Abandoned Places\, Abandoned Spaces with Karol and John Murray
DESCRIPTION:Gems of the Canadian Rockies\nPhoto Credit: Rena Schild \nOver 20 years ago\, Jack had watched a PBS show on some of the great lodges from around the world where he first saw images of the beauty surrounding Chateau Lake Louise\, thus creating an entry to his world travels bucket list. So\, in 2019\, he and his wife Susy made plans to stay at the Chateau and to further explore the Canadian Rockies. Their plans centered around bus tour to the great resorts of the Canadian Rockies which included stays at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge\, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise\, and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel\, also known as the “Castle of the Rockies”. What he learned on the trip was that the beauty around Chateau Lake Louise that first attracted him to the area extended throughout the entire Canadian Rockies. The pictures shown tonight are just a small sample of the widespread mountain beauty that they experienced on their journey. \nJack’s photography journey began with his first 35mm film camera\, a Minolta X-370\, back in the 1980s. He enjoyed his photography for several years\, mostly while traveling\, until his interest waned in the early 2000s as the digital transition began. His interest in photography was renewed when he picked up his first digital camera\, a Nikon P610 in 2015\, in anticipation of a European River Cruise. He enjoyed the freedom of the digital medium and certainly all the auto features on his point-and-shoot bridge camera. \nAfter Jack retired from his years in the software engineering industry in late 2018\, he needed to find something to pass his time so he thought about photography. His searching for photography clubs brought him to his first NVPS club meeting in September 2019. Since then\, it has been a good whirlwind of activity. He was fortunate enough to have an image juried into NatureVision and  has received a couple of ribbons in the NVPS monthly competitions. The club has been very encouraging\, and he believes he has grown his skills by upgrading his camera to a Nikon D7500 with an 18-300mm zoom lens. moving fully onto manual\, learning better composition\, and venturing into post-processing. He is enjoying all the benefits of the club and learning from all of the extraordinary talent in it. \nJack is still trying to figure out what he likes to photograph\, but he certainly likes taking pictures of big landscape vistas and capturing his travels from around the world. \n \n  \nAbandoned Places\, Abandoned Spaces – with Karol and John Murray\nKarol in the Woods! \nKarol finds herself drawn to abandoned places. She’s not sure why\, but finds herself wondering what it was like when they were functioning\, who lived or worked there\, and why they were abandoned.  She began dragging John along on fieldtrips and he caught her fascination with such empty spaces.  Fortunately\, Karol hasn’t abandoned him on any of these trips – yet. \nFor this collection\, we wanted to share photos from some of our favorite haunts in this genre\, including images from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum\, Eastern State Penitentiary\, Ellis Island\, A. Hoen & Co. Lithograph Building\, and other abandoned places and abandoned spaces. \nKarol and John Murray have been involved in photography in one form or another since the early 1970s but did not get “serious” until more recently.  John started with a Mamiya Sekor and shot friends\, family\, sunsets\, and travels when he was in the Navy.  He even had a darkroom in the basement.  Karol shot mostly our children but has a good eye\, won several photo contests\, and even got a picture on a magazine cover. \nAfter a long pause from photography\, Karol joined NVPS in 2013 and became enthralled by her ability to see things differently and capture her vision digitally\, using a Nikon D7200.  John eventually got tired of being her Sherpa and began taking pictures about five years ago – first with a Nikon point and shoot that Karol bought him for Christmas and now with a mirrorless Fujifilm.  Together they have travelled far and wide taking pictures to satisfy creative urges and document their adventures.  They mostly shoot landscapes and architecture but will stop along the side of the road if something catches their eye. \n
