SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Jean-Pierre Plé – Theme: “Old”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Old” within the past three (3) years \nOld : People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: 1. Having lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples. 2. Made or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. No dead\, or dying flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nJean-Pierre Plé is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to.  He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes\, lines\, or contrast in color or tones.  \nHis photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature\, landscapes\, abstracts and architecture\, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography\, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner.  Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work\, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography.  While he employs DSLR\, mirrorless and iPhone cameras\, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow\, methodical\, and mechanical components of large format.   \nHe is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club.  His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington\, DC area\, including Washington Printmakers Gallery\, Waverly Street Gallery\, Photoworks Gallery\, Nature Visions\, Herndon ArtSpace\, the Joe Miller Gallery\, PhotoWalk in Crystal City\, Touchstone Gallery\, Lowe House Building\, and the Dupont Underground.  His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – “How to Get Your Work Out There” by Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:Georgette’s journey in photography began 15 years ago when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born. Not capturing the cute smiles that she wanted\, Georgette switched from a point’n shoot to a DSLR (Nikon D80) and took classes at Fairfax County Adult Ed with John Gonsalves. Eventually the relationship of aperture\, shutter speed\, and exposure fell into place. John instructed her class to tell a story; fill the frame! She hears his voice whenever she has a camera (or cell phone) in hand!! \nGeorgette captures moments that she wants to remember. Her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, and nature\, but her favorite subject is flowers–close-ups and macros. Currently\, she is photographing with a mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \nGeorgette personally believes that part of photography is sharing your work with others: \n\nat camera club meetings\nat competitions\nat exhibits\nin publications\non social media\non your own website\n\nIn this meeting\, she will explore How to Get Your Work Out There.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – What to “See” in Architecture by Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Judy will discuss her passion for architectural photography including challenges\, edit tips\, what works and doesn’t\, and how to really “work” an architectural subject beyond the snapshot by delving into lines\, patterns\, graphics\, and reflections. \nJudy admits to being primarily a travel photographer. She loves shooting a variety of subjects while traveling\, depending on where in the world she happens to be. From landscapes in the Palouse and National Parks\, to water and ice in Greenland and Antarctica\, to wildlife in South Georgia Island and Montana\, to local portraits and street photography\, and finally to amazing architecture. She didn’t start shooting anything other than snapshots until 10 years ago when her husband\, Wayne\, decided she was ready for a “big girl’s camera.” She has moved from all Nikon equipment to Olympus mirrorless equipment. She also loves using the cameras on her iPhone 12 Pro Max. She has been a member of NVPS since 2015\, is a member of the F11 Women’s Photography Collective\, the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria\, and the Maryland Federation of Arts in Annapolis\, MD. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Capitol Hill Christmas Tree
DESCRIPTION:***Rescheduled to Sunday December 12th due to Saturday weather forecast of wet and windy*** \nThere’s nothing like getting into the holiday spirit than by visiting a giant tree decorated with lights.  In December\, we’ll visit the Capital Christmas Tree and surrounding area for an evening of photographic creativity.  There will be urban landscapes\, architecture\, light painting and more.  The monuments on the East side of the Mall are great at night. \nWhat: \nPhoto Credit: Rena Schild\nThe Capital Dome and Christmas tree will be our primary subjects\, however\, there’s lots of goodies around Capital Hill so feel free to explore the area.  The US Botanical Garden will also have their own outdoor holiday display (https://www.usbg.gov/plan-your-holiday-visit) that will be open until 5pm.  And don’t forget about the East side of the Capital Dome.  If it’s a wet evening\, you’ll likely find interesting (and fun) puddles on the pavement in front of the East side of the Capital.  Across 1st St. you have both the Library of Congress and Supreme Court for even more subjects.  If the Capital Dome is your thing\, maybe also check out the Upper and Lower Senate Park and look South for the dome.  There’s lots to see and do. \nSunset  4:47 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well\, but other ranges will also work if you want to bring more glass. Maybe leave the super telephoto at home.  You don’t want to attract too much attention.\nGenerally speaking\, Capital police won’t allow tripods except on the land around the Christmas tree. National Park police are more forgiving.  If things are busy at the outdoor botanical garden display\, don’t be surprised if someone asks you not to use a tripod.  Politely accept their request and consider it permission to be more creative.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, December 11\, 2021 from 4:00pm – 7:30pmRain date on Sunday\, December 12\, 2021 from 4:00pm – 7:30pm \nWhere: \nPhoto Credit: Steven Glintz\nThere should be plenty of free parking at the end of Maryland Ave. (near the US Botanical Gardens).  If that lot is full\, try for the other lot at the end of Pennsylvania Ave.    If you’re still out of luck\, there is limited parking to the North along Louisiana Ave. (on the way to Union Station). \nWe’ll meet in front of the US Botanical Gardens building at 4:00pm.  That gives us an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company prior to the photo shoot.  It also gives us the option to capture a sunset if one materializes.  If you arrive early to explore the US Botanical Garden’s outdoor display\, please take a break and say “Hi\,” we’d love hear from you. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe photos below are by Steven Glintz.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – “Street Photography” by Bob & Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nThis is a redo of our presentation in 2018.  Even tho we were in the middle of the pandemic there were still lots of possibilities. \nWikipedia says “Street photography is photography conducted for art or inquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places”. We have been doing that for a number of years.  The key word in the definition is: “public”; it need not be on the street. \nOur presentation will explain what you can do legally in public spaces\, as told by lawyers and court decisions. You do have the right to photograph in public places. \nThe “decisive moment” will be explored as shown by Henri Cartier-Bresson and other photographers\, famous\, not so famous\, and us! It’s not always what it seems. \nAlso\, getting over the reluctance to take street photos or fear of getting punched in the face will be discussed including safe and friendly places for street photography. There are interesting places where you can practice street photography\, sometimes even with the cooperation of your subjects. \n Bob & Willa Friedman Biographies: \n As a teenager\, Bob started his photography journey with a darkroom in his parent’s basement\, which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when we bought our house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools\, and her images were published in a fourth grade textbook.  \nIf selling a few photos makes us pros\, then we are pros. Otherwise we are advanced amateurs. We have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada. We have also had extensive courses in Photoshop. We have been members of NVPS for 12 years. \nOur subjects are varied\, but Bob does street photography and Willa finds reflections everywhere. Both use Fuji cameras with various lenses. \nOur current job is retirement — doesn’t pay very well but it is a lot more fun than the “W” word. We have multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. and have prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area and in many private collections.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Harper’s Ferry
DESCRIPTION:Many parts of West Virginia peak their fall colors in the first few weeks of October.  We’ll be visiting Harper’s Ferry after what would be considered peak season\, but that’s okay.  The sun will be lower in the sky and that can help accentuate textures and create interesting light and shadows in and around town.  This field trip may be a black and white photographer’s bread and butter\, so to speak. \nWhat:  \nPhoto Credit: David Crooks\nArchitecture photographers may find St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church interesting.  The church appears to be open now so feel free to go inside.  Landscape photographers may find sweeping vista shots from locations higher up like Jefferson Rock.  Those same photographers looking for more of a workout may try for the Maryland Heights trail (accessible via B&O Railroad Bridge) which takes you to a commanding view of the town.  The trail takes a few hours to complete\, but it can be rewarding.  Of course\, there’s all the alley ways and nooks and crannies around the downtown area.  There are lots of attractions just outside town as well including Piney Run Waterfall at Potoma Wayside Park so consider snooping around the area before you leave for the day.  For this field trip\, we’ll concentrate around downtown. \nSunrise  6:52 a.m. (EST)Sunset  4:58 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\n24-70mm is my favorite walk about lens and will serve you well in these conditions.\n70-200mm is another favorite for landscapes\, candid street photography\, and detail shots.\nTripods are welcome\nBring a mask if you plan to use the shuttle or go into any buildings. You can bring water or buy a bottle from a shop.\n\nPhoto Credit: Mike Whalen\nWhen: \nSaturday\, November 13\, 2021 from 9:30am – 12pmRain date on Sunday\, November 14\, 2021 from 9:30am – 12pm \nWhere: \nWe’ll gather at Arsenal Square at 9:30am.  The drive from Alexandria to Harper’s Ferry is about 80 minutes by way of I-495\, I-270\, and Rt.340. \nUnlike many other parks operated by the NPS\, Harper’s Ferry has an entrance fee of $20 per car ($10 per individual).  You can also get in with a Harpers Ferry Annual Pass ($35) or an Annual (aka inter-agency) Park Pass ($80\, with discounts for Seniors and Military). \nSee https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm for more information on passes. \nLimited parking is available downtown.  Your best bet may be the train station parking lot which hosts 80 spots\, but that lot will fill up fast.  There are smaller lots along Shenandoah St. (Alt.Rt.340)\, but if memory serves\, that involves a lot of walking to get to the good stuff.  Alternatively\, you can park at the Visitor’s Center (171 Shoreline Drive\, Harpers Ferry\, WV 25425) and ride the shuttle which should let you out near our meetup spot. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n\n\nPhoto Credit: David CrooksPhoto Credit: Mike Whalen

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique by Bill Millhouser and Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\nExperiments with new processing techniques\nImages you are considering for competition (note: there are no guarantees you will win but the critique may help)\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. You also can use Zoom chat to send a direct message only to Education & Training Coordinator Lynn Cates and she will ask the question or make the comment for you. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Friday\, October 29\, 2021 to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Bill and Stan to review them before the November 9 meeting.  \nSubmitting Images \n\nYou can submit up to three images.\nPlease prioritize them for review by naming them as follows:number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.”(Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued.  Beyond that\, Bill and Stan will critique as many images as time allows.)\nDo not put your name or the word “title” in the title of your images.\nSize your images the same as for competition:\n\njpeg images\nsRGB workspace\nMaximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\n127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI)\n\n\nInclude “Anonymous Critique” in the subject line of your email\, and the name of each image in the text of the message.\nIf you send your images from Mac email\, be sure to select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner.\nSubmit your images to David Crooks at his email address provided in the October 15th and October 21st NVPS eBlasts.  Also\, please note that David’s email address is in the “Notices” section of all NVPS eBlasts beginning October 21st.\n\nQuestions?  Please contact the Education & Training Coordinator Lynn Cates (contact information can be found at Board Contacts.) \nBiographies: \nBill Millhouser  \nBill became interested in photography in the early 1970s\, starting with a used Yashica SLR moving on to a series of Canon film SLRs. In 2001\, Bill dove in the digital age and bought the Canon D30\, which had a rather modest 3.25 megapixel sensor and a blazing 3 FPS frame rate. \nSoon after retiring in 2010\, Bill attended his first photographic workshop in Costa Rica\, which exposed him to the wonderful variety and color of tropical birds and the proper use of big telephoto lenses (both on a tripod and handheld)\, the use of fill flash\, and the complexities of multi-flash setups to capture the beauty of the region’s many hummingbirds. His keen interest in wildlife and bird photography has since led him to visit many locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region\, the West Coast\, New Mexico\, Florida\, Belize\, Central and South America\, as well as several trips to Africa\, \nSince joining NVPS\, Bill has served as the Field Trip Coordinator\, Co-VP of competition\, and President of the Club. \n  \n\nStan Bysshe \nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the fins and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land based photography. Still nature remained a driving force behind his images. \nSince joining the club\, Stan has volunteered for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, Mentoring and is a past President. For the past several years he has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska and Yellowstone National Park. \nThis is his second Anonymous Critique\, and like most NVPS members he too is still searching for that magic image recipe that captures a viewer’s eye.

SUMMARY:Programs: The Six Principles of Art for Photographers with Richard Bernabe
DESCRIPTION:Alaskan brown bear in late evening light\, Lake Clark National Park\, AlaskaAfrican elephants at a water hole just after sunset\, Etosha National Park\, Namibia\n\n\nFor his presentation this evening\, Richard Bernabe will answer the following question\, “What’s the secret to improving your nature\, wildlife\, or travel photos?” \nRichard says that you can better hone your composition skills\, develop a keener eye for natural light\, and express your moments in nature in more emotional tones and you will certainly create more compelling images. You could also learn from the design principles used by master painters and artists through the centuries in creating their timeless masterpieces. These Six Principles of Art (sometimes listed as Principles of Design and/or contain as many seven or even eight components) are the guiding precepts in what makes art and design more aesthetically pleasing to the human eye and brain Richard will discuss each of these principles and teach you how to apply them to your photography. \nRichard Bernabe is an internationally-renowned nature\, wildlife\, and travel photographer as well as widely-published author from the United States. His passion for adventure has been the driving force behind his life’s quest to capture the moods and character of the world’s most amazing places\, from Africa to the Amazon to the Arctic and countless places in between. \nZebra fur patterns\, Serengeti National Park\, Tanzania\nEditorial clients include National Geographic\, The New York Times\, Time\, Audubon\, The BBC\, The World Wildlife Fund\, National Parks\, Outdoor Photographer\, and many others. Corporate clients include Canon\, Patagonia\, Orvis\, REI\, Apple\, Microsoft\, American Express\, and more. \nRichard was named one of the “Top 30 Influential Photographers on the Web” by the Huffington Post and included in the “20 Photographers Changing the World Through Social Media” by Influence Digest.  Richard is a global influencer in the fields of photography\, travel\, and wildlife conservation with more than 1 million social media followers. \nMore information can be found at https://richardbernabe.com \n\n\nThe Dark Hedges in early dawn\, Northern IrelandLate evening skies reflected in beaver pond along Duck Brook Road\, Acadia National Park\, Maine USA

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Florida\, for the Birds with Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Florida\, for the Birds. \n As a nature photographer\, Stan is continually striving to improve his bird photography. From Warblers to Raptors\, one recurring helpful strategy has been to seek out target rich areas to practice capturing avian behavior. Florida is certainly one of those areas. It would be impossible to cover all the places Stan has visited in Florida but he will cover some of his favorite spots and share some of the tricks he has picked up during his adventures. \nBio \nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the fins and when he joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land based photography. Still nature remained a driving force behind his images. \nAt NVPS Stan has served on multiple committees and is a Past President. He has given multiple talks to NVPS and to several local photo clubs as well.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Whimsy\, and Other Odd Bits with Tim Brown
DESCRIPTION:Tim’s Gallery\, Whimsy\, and Other Odd Bits\, is a collection of photos of the kinds of things you don’t see every day. \nTim Brown entered the world of photography gradually after several decades of a life with no apparent artistic interest or talent. Occasional attempts to capture interesting scenes on film\, especially in the desert southwest\, rarely succeeded. The three key threshold events that most significantly advanced Tim’s photography skills and interest are: \n\nGetting a digital camera in 2004\, which enabled unlimited experimentation.\nGetting Adobe Lightroom in 2016\, which provided new life for many pictures previously thought to be worthless.\nJoining the Northern Virginia Photographic Society in 2018\, which opened up an avenue to helpful feedback that boosted both enthusiasm and results.\n\n

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Love is in the Air with Bob Friedman
DESCRIPTION:The gallery that Bob will share with us are photos of people showing love. \nBob Friedman – Bio \nAs a teenager\, Bob started his photography journey with a basement darkroom he inherited from his brother. He enjoyed printing and did his first composite when he was 17 years old.  He put a friend’s girlfriend’s head on a nude model.  We thought it was funny but the girlfriend did not and they broke up. \nThe first thing he did when he bought a house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \nHe joined the Art League about 8 years ago and has been juried into many monthly shows and even received a Best in Show in an exhibit. \nHe has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, He has also had extensive courses in Photoshop. He has been a member of NVPS for over 15 years. \nHe has multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, D.C. and has prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area\, a Congressional office and in many private collections. \nHis current passion is street photography.  Difficult in these times\, but possible as shown in his photos in NVPS Members Gallery. \n

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Greg Holden – No Theme\, Open
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: Open within the past three (3) years \nGreg Holden is a photographer from Longmont\, Co who uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. Greg enjoys being outside hiking in parks and looking for nature’s creations to photograph.  He looks for interesting patterns or textures in trees and rocks to form creative photos that make the viewer think.  It is these little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his creativity.  Although he won’t pass by a chance to photograph a beautiful landscape or a tranquil sunset\, he’d rather be exploring abandoned places and capturing the details of the layers of paint and rust on a discarded automobile. \nGreg is president of his camera club in Colorado\, the St. Vrain Photographic Society.  He enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography and continues to speak and judge\, virtually\, at clubs throughout the MD and VA areas. SUMMARY:Willing Warriors Project – Open House For NVPS Members
DESCRIPTION:I’m pleased to report that the Willing Warriors Retreat has invited all NVPS members to attend an open house on October 14\, 2021\, at 10:00 am. For new members\, Willing Warriors is a retreat in Haymarket\, VA providing an extended weekend for our veterans and their families recovering from service-related injuries. The facility is located at 16013 Waterfall Road\, Haymarket\, VA\, and the web site is Willing Warriors. For the past two years\, NVPS club members have been contributing photographs to decorate the walls of the two houses that comprise the retreat. To date we have installed approximately 95 images in the PenFed house thus completing this facility. We have also installed the first photographs in the Lang house. The open house event will include a presentation of the history of the Willing Warriors Program and a tour of the PenFed and Lang houses allowing you to see the installed work and the locations for future contributions. \nFor the Lang house the following types of images are still desired:• Flower fields or closeups • U.S. “Country” towns or villages• U.S. old barns or buildings• Images of U.S. cities• Regional images of the DC urban areas• Modern U.S military (all services) images for a collage in the game room • Two large images of open subjects • U.S. Waterfalls \nAs a reminder\, donated photographs should be matted and framed to be no smaller than 11×14 dimensions (16×20 and 18×24 framed sizes are very desirable). There are walls that could benefit from more significantly sized images so\,  if the photographer wishes\, larger images such as canvas wraps or metal prints would also be useful.  \nIf you have several pictures to consider\, please send JPEGs in the NVPS electronic format (127 ppi\, horizontal images to be 1400 pixels wide or vertical images to be 1040 pixels tall) to me at willingwarriors@nvps.org. I can then review them with the retreat’s representative to confirm selections.  \nWhen you have a finished a piece\, just contact me at the above email to arrange a time and location for an exchange. Photographs of installed images are sent to the contributing photographer and posted in the NVPS Willing Warriors Gallery to share with all our members. \nThe contributions from NVPS have been much appreciated by the Willing Warriors staff\, directors and most importantly the veterans and their families. \nThanks again. \nJim SinsheimerNVPS Willing Warriors Project Coordinator

These techniques include photographing flowers on Lightbox\, multiple exposures both in Camera and via Photoshop\, applying textures to floral images\, selective focus\, blurred backgrounds\, compositional elements\, backlighting\, and bokeh! This program also includes tips on processing colors which are considered difficult to photograph\, like red and purple. \nArtist Statement: \nMy goal as a photographer is to get people to slow down\, unite with the natural world and absorb the beauty of flowers\, create an oasis in this rapid\, constantly demanding stressful daily life. There is no better way to escape this running-around than spending time looking through a lens. I want to set people on a path of inspiration\, hope\, joy\, and love that comes from an appreciation of these tiny treasures all around us. It gives me immense joy in taking you down a beautiful journey into flowers through my lens where you admire and observe flowers with a whole new perspective and create art that lasts far longer than the flower itself. \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Local Photography Sites with David Crooks
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, David created the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group which\, now has over 2\,000 members. The Group features at least two monthly field trips. This presentation is based on David’s new book\, “Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Guide Book.” In it\, he describes 25 locations the Meetup Group frequently visited over the past six years. \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. From his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and far away\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives\, David pursues his love of photography. \nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia to be closer to work. He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \nOn January 15\, 2015\, David decided to create a local photography Meetup. He knew there were many great places to photograph the wildlife along the beltway near his home. Over six years later\, the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group has over 2\,000 members and he leads about two field trips a month. With the pandemic lockdown starting in the middle of March 2020\, he continued to meet with the members of the group with online meetings to continue the social aspect of the group. As the parks opened up\, the Group started back with at least two field trips a month by wearing masks and social distancing in addition to having online presentations. \nDuring the pandemic\, David wrote the “Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Guide Book” based on his Meetup group and describes the locations visited in the past six years. The book is available in both paperback and as an ebook/Kindle version. \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: A Photographic Potpourri with George Bradshaw
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Ed Marion \nA Photographic Potpourri \nThe venerable stew\, which has been with us since at least the 13th millennia BC\, inspired this Member’s Gallery – a mixture of favorite themes whose commonality is based solely upon the photographer’s interests.  Themes will include Things in the Sky\, The Beauty of Nature\, A Touch of Architecture\, A Dollop of Drama\, Snippets of Astronomy\, and more.  \nGeorge Bradshaw’s Photo Bio \nGeorge inherited a photo gene from his father who freelanced in the ‘30s and ‘40s.  But the gene did not express itself until 2015 when\, in retirement\, he bought a Canon 70D; and has been having a blast with photography ever since.  His interests are eclectic\, in the sense that he hasn’t the discipline to focus.  And his compositions have been called whimsical\, which he firmly believes is a compliment.  \nThis most fascinating of all hobbies has opened up the DC area for George.  Despite being a near lifelong Fairfaxian\, he has explored many more local venues in the past few years than in the past few decades.   And George’s bucket list includes getting outside the area to visit his father’s old haunts in NYC where he plied his freelancing.  \nGeorge joined the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Photo Club in 2015 and became its webmaster.  The OPC has given George many wonderful opportunities to learn about and have practical experience with the photographic arts.  And as the OPC is affiliated with George Mason University\, the experience has included photographing dress rehearsals for Mason’s School of Theater – quite a technical and artistic challenge\, as well as a fulfilling activity.  In 2018 George joined the NVPS and is now the Society’s eBlaster.  He especially enjoys the NVPS Education & Training programs\, which\, along with all the other NVPS activities\, continually drive him forward to “see” his world and discover meaningful compositions. \n
