SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Flora and Fauna: Four Seasons in the Washington DC Area with Eva Lanyi
DESCRIPTION:For the past year or so\, Eva stayed close to home for her photography adventures. Exploring local gardens and natural areas for plants and animals to photograph was incredibly rewarding. She was able to capture nature in all four seasons and experience the changes it undergoes with time’s passage. Starting and ending with spring\, her slideshow will take you on the journey with her. \nEva has been interested in photography since childhood and still has her first camera\, a Kodak Brownie Starmatic. She dabbled in film photography for many years until about 10 years ago\, when she got serious with her first digital camera. Now she spends much of her spare time enjoying photography and improving her skills.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Old Post Office
DESCRIPTION:In January\, our club will visit the sites around the Old Post Office and Clock Tower. This is a wonderful winter destination for urban landscape\, architecture\, and street photography. \nWe’ll begin our tour by gathering along 12th Street NW in front of the Woodrow Wilson Plaza where some may find their first shots of the morning. Following our usual meet and greet\, we’ll move indoors to escape the cold January morning. We’ll enter the Old Post Office using the public entrance on 12th St. A hallway outlining the history of the building will lead us to an elevator that will take us to the top floor of the main building with a view of the renovated hotel atrium. The exhibit continues to the clock tower elevator where we’ll go up to witness the views from on top of the third tallest building in Washington DC. \nWhen we’re done peeping at rooftops and the outdoor temperatures have warmed up\, we’ll return to the street for some external shots including views of The Capitol down Pennsylvania Ave. We’ll also go on the hunt as we wander our way around the Woodrow Wilson Plaza picking out the nooks and crannies created by all the paths in and out. \nDepending on the outcome from our meet and greet discussions\, we may decide to visit one of the nearby restaurants for lunch. There is also an indoor food court in the Reagan building. \nA lot of renovations have occurred since our last visit in 2008: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2007-2008-Field-Trips/Oldpostoffice/ \nEquipment: \n\nStandard and wide angle lenses will work well for those who want to focus on architecture and street photography. Consider a longer lens if you want to pick out some city landscape details.\nTripods are welcome though it may be a little tight inside the clock tower.\nIt’s January in DC\, dress accordingly for outdoor exploring. Sidewalks may be icy in the morning as the low Sun will likely be blocked by buildings.\n\n When: \nSaturday\, January 21\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet near the elevator access to Federal Triangle metro along 12th Street NW. \nDirections: \nThe Old Post Office and Clock Tower (aka Waldorf Astoria) is located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue\, N.W. in Washington\, D.C.. \nThe metro has a blue/orange/silver line station (Federal Triangle) located directly across the street from the Old Post Office and should be strongly considered. \nParking and tickets: \nYou’ll find multiple parking lots off 11th St\, 12th St\, and E St. one block North. These lots can be considered pricey at $12+. \nThe Old Post Office Pavilion and Clock Tower are all free to visit and do not require tickets. \nCOVID precautions: \nThis event has a mix of indoor and outdoor photo opportunities. We anticipate the risk will be relatively low. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy of Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Denise Silva – Theme: “Street Photography at Night”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Street Photography at Night” within the past three (3) years \nStreet Photography at Night: \nFor this theme “street photography” is defined as a photograph featuring (1) the human condition\, or (2) the relationship or interaction between people and their surroundings. There should be a person in the image\, although that person need not be the subject of the photo. A street photo example could be a candid\, semi-candid or spontaneous (but not staged) photo of a person (or persons) in a public\, private or open place doing something other than posing for you to take their picture. This is also night photography meaning the image should be taken after sunset and before sunrise. \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge is Denise Silva. \nBIO: \nDenise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. The evenings watching slideshows set the seed. 35-years later those seeds took root and inspired Denise to embrace photography and more specifically travel photography and Road Runner Photography Tours was born. \nDenise has been recognized as one of the Top 200 Women Photographers Who Inspire by Nature Photo Guides and has had multiple articles published in Extraordinary Vision (EV) Magazine\, and is a featured artist in Breakthrough Photography’s Guide to Night Sky Photography. \nHer passion is to share her knowledge of photography\, while introducing people to the amazing landscapes\, wildlife\, and people all over the world. \nShe has contributed multiple articles to Fujifilm X/GFX USA website and has been interviewed by Peggy Farren\, of Understanding Photography\, on Overcoming the Challenges of Street Photography (Check the interview out here). \nRecognitions: \n\nThree images published in Black & White Magazine\, 2021\, Smartphone issue.\nFeatured in the 2021\, Lenswork\, Our Magnificent Planet 2021 edition.\nAwarded in Alternative Digital Processes category\, Black & White Magazine\, Looking Forward–Looking Backward 2022. \n\nDenise embraces the idea that everyday above ground is a good one\, so get out and enjoy! Join her and her team for your next adventure! \nFor more information\, go to her website at: https://roadrunnerphotographytours.com/ \n \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training – Anonymous Critique with Stan Bysshe and Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Like most NVPS members\, Stan and Judy have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what was it that caught your eye\, did you convey that vision to the viewer. \nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\nExperiments with new processing techniques\nImages you are considering for competition\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. You also can use Zoom chat to send a direct message only to Education & Training Coordinator Art Rose and he will ask the question or make the comment for you. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 27\, 2022 to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Stan and Judy to review them before the January 10 meeting. \nSubmitting Images \nYou can submit up to three images. \nResize Your Image(s)Size images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically. Image resolution should be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI). Image format is jpg. Color space is sRGB. \nRename your image filename(s)File naming is important. Include the image title preceded with 1-\, 2-\, or 3-. Examples: 1-Fishing Boat.jpg\, 2-Old Dock.jpg\, 3-Hawaiian Sunset.jpg. Files starting with 1- will be highest priority\, 2- medium priority and 3- low priority. Depending on the number of images submitted\, we may not get thru them all so number your most important image with a 1-. Spaces are OK\, but do not use any special characters in the filename. \nNote: Since those critiquing will see the filenames\, do not include your name there\, just the number prefix and image title. \nDrag-and-Drop your images into SmugMug***Look for the drag-and-drop instructions in a December 13th and 20th eBlast to all of the current NVPS members.*** \nQuestions? Contact the Education & Training Coordinator Art Rose\, email information can be found at Board Contacts. \nBiographies: \nStan Bysshe \nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the scuba gear and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography. Still nature remained a driving force behind his images. \nSince joining the club\, Stan has “volunteered” for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, Mentoring and is a past President. This will be his third Anonymous Critique. \nFor the past several years he has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska\, Yellowstone National Park\, New Mexico and Florida. \n \n\nJudy Guenther \nJUDY GUENTHER\, photographer\, enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts. She has won several awards\, most recently the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, The Art League Gallery of Alexandria\, Va.\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Collective. Her web site is www.judyguentherphotography.com \n

SUMMARY:Programs: Finding Your Creative Voice with Colleen Miniuk
DESCRIPTION:Are you bored with your photography? Or maybe you don’t feel like a creative person? Get a creative jolt from outdoor photographer/author Colleen Miniuk as she shares the story of how she transformed from a photographer who liked to take “pretty” pictures into a visual artist who now seeks to make personally meaningful visual expressions from her life experiences. Using her insights from her three artist-in-residencies and 450+ days in Acadia National Park\, she’ll share how you can feed the Wallas model of creativity\, tap into conceptual blending\, and “steal like an artist” to collect new ideas and connect with the landscape in fresh ways. Learn how to rely less on your external surroundings to provide the creative juice and how to confidently bring your own voice to every subject and scene\, no matter where your camera takes you. \nBio: \nColleen Miniuk is a corporate-America-escapee turned full-time outdoor photographer\, writer\, publisher\, instructor\, and speaker from Chandler\, Arizona. Her credits include National Geographic calendars\, Arizona Highways\, AAA Via\, National Parks Traveler\, On Landscape\, and a variety of other publications. After serving three times as an Artist-in-Residence with Acadia National Park\, she authored the award-winning guidebook\, Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When\, Where\, and How. SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Greg Holden - No Theme\, Open
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: Open within the past three (3) years \nThe judge is Greg Holden. \nBIO: \nGreg Holden is a photographer from Longmont\, Co who uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. He enjoys creative photos of little scenes often overlooked by others rather than postcard landscapes. Although he won’t pass by a chance to photograph a beautiful landscape or a tranquil sunset\, he’d rather be exploring abandoned places and capturing the details of the layers of paint and rust on a discarded automobile. He finds inspiration from master photographers and a wide range of subjects\, such as: the close-up beach studies by Minor White\, the early portraiture of Steichen and Stieglitz\, and street scenes by Andre Kertesz. He enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography and continues to speak and judge\, virtually\, at clubs throughout the MD and VA areas. \nYou can see Greg’s work on his website imagesunderfoot.com

SUMMARY:Education & Training – My Approach to Landscape Photography with Judy Graham
DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham has been fortunate to do some amazing things in her life\, but the time she spends doing landscape photography\, remains at the top of her list. Judy’s E&T presentation is about her approach to the art\, covering topics such as her gear and accessories\, camera settings\, time of day for best results\, various composition techniques\, and challenges in the field. This presentation is sure to provide useful information for novice and intermediate photographers\, and advanced photographers will similarly find useful information about how she sees compositions. \nBIO: \nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life. She retired March 1\, 2018\, after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 with the goal of meeting local photographers\, doing more local photography\, and learning more about the art of photography. Judy has served in various Board positions for NVPS\, including President for the 2021-2022 club year. \nJudy is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in more recent years she has expanded her travel to include such places as Alaska\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Bolivia\, Patagonia\, and the Canadian Rockies and Yellowstone\, in winter. She does not let the cold or bad weather get in her way. \nMost recently Judy joined the Capital Photography Center as an instructor. She will be sharing her passion for landscape photography and teaching novice to intermediate photographers the principles of composition in the field.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Unspoiled-South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:South Georgia Island is famous as the destination for Ernest Shackleton\, the explorer whose expedition ship was crushed in the Antarctic ice in November 1915. The story of how he got to South Georgia and returned to rescue his entire crew is the stuff of legend. The island is in the middle of nowhere\, 870 miles east of the Falklands which themselves are about 300 miles East of South America. Both are under British Overseas Territory rule\, with about 3500 inhabitants on the Falklands and 8 to 40 seasonal researchers on South Georgia\, \nOur National Geographic expedition departed Ushuaia\, Argentina in March 2016 and stopped in several remote areas in the Falklands for bird viewing (mostly penguins) and landscapes before steaming two days further east to South Georgia Island. There we cruised for seven days\, going ashore numerous times via zodiac boats as the wildlife and scenery presented opportunities and as the weather allowed. With no predators the wildlife is unconcerned about humans and we could advance to prescribed minimum distances\, although the penguins frequently came quite close on their own. Then we had a rough three days plowing through heavy seas to visit Port Stanley\, Falklands\, and an interior sheep farm before another day at sea to return to Ushuaia and our flight home. \nThis presentation will describe this journey and include photos of penguins\, albatross\, and other birds\, seals\, and scenery from these desolate but incredibly beautiful and pristine islands. \nBIO \nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style. In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, has placed in numerous NVPS monthly competitions\, and was awarded their Class Three Digital Photographer of the Year designation in 2017. \nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic. He switched to the micro-four-thirds system in 2014 and uses Olympus E-M1 bodies (currently Mark III) and a combination of Olympus (12-40mm f2.8 Pro; 40-150mm f2.8 Pro; and 17mm f1.7)\, Panasonic/Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4\, and Sigma 56 f1.4 lenses. \nHis web site is www.wayneguentherphotography.com

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Four Season in the Appalachian Highlands with David Lattanzi
DESCRIPTION:For a few weeks every year\, nature photographers converge on the Appalachian Mountains to capture the beautiful fall foliage. Yet this unique region offers year-round opportunities for image making\, as Dave hopes to convey to you. \nDave Lattanzi got into photography over 20 years ago after finding his mother’s old Canon AE-1\, primarily to impress his girlfriend. His love of photography has lasted far longer than that relationship. His photographic journey started with traditional black and white darkroom processes that still influence the way he shoots today. \nHe has a love of both nature and travel photography\, often in combination. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world with his camera\, having visited 50 states\, 5 continents\, and more countries than he can count. But his heart belongs to the West Virginia highlands\, and he is devoted to capturing the unique beauty of those lands. He counts Fay Godwin\, Bruce Percy\, Clyde Butcher\, and Galen Rowell among the myriad photographers that have inspired him over the years. He has been a member of NVPS since 2018. You can see more of his work at lattanziphoto.com \n

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeida – Theme: “Prepared Food”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Prepared Food” within the past three (3) years \nPrepared Food: \nFor this theme you should make images of prepared food that is good enough to eat\, whatever it may be – a plate of fried fish\, a soufflé ready to collapse\, a steaming bowl of pea soup with home-made bread\, etc. This food must be cooked or prepared and ready to eat. Creative presentation of the food is encouraged. No images of raw\, unprepared food not ready to be eaten. \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge for this competition is Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeida. \nBIO: \nAlain is a professional photographer\, photojournalist\, artist\, food blogger\, and creator and owner of his own photography and travel business\, Thru Alain’s Eyes\, LLC. He was born and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, and spent nearly 18 years there working as a photojournalist for various media entities\, photographing high-profile cultural and social events like the visits of President Barack Obama and Pope Francis\, The Rolling Stones concert\, and Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel runway show. He was also selected by the US Embassy to be the official photographer at their embassy re-opening ceremony with Secretary of State John Kerry. \nIn September 2014 he began a blog entitled “Taste of Cuba” with the goal of sharing Cuban culinary trends and traditions with the rest of the world. It featured his photographs and stories of the chefs and cuisine that are shaping Cuba today. Alain believes that food brings us all closer together. Whenever he travels\, he prefers eating where the locals eat. If you really want to experience a place\, experience its food—those are the ingredients that define a people\, and every dish can be a lesson in culture. \nWith the renewal of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States\, he began to offer his services as a local guide for photography and culinary tours in Havana and other parts of Cuba. In 2018 he moved to the United States and is now based in Bethesda. Starting in March 2019 he began designing\, organizing\, and guiding his own tours and road trips for small groups visiting his beloved homeland. When he is not leading tours to Cuba\, he works as a freelance photographer in the Washington area\, offering photography and video services for theatrical productions\, school events and activities\, and graduation and family portraits. With his background in photojournalism\, he excels at creating compelling and authentic photos that capture your attention. \nHe loves exploring the world around him and telling the stories of those he meets during his travels.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Smithsonian's National Zoo
DESCRIPTION:NVPS November 2022 Field TripPlease join us for an autumn morning safari around the zoo. The Smithsonian’sNational Zoo is a popular destination renowned for its wide assortment of exoticanimals. One of the best features of the National Zoo is the relatively naturalenvironments curated for each animal. Most of these photogenic animals you’ll meet are ready and willing to pose for your camera. Our task will be to capture their best in the warm morning light among the most natural backgrounds we can find. We’ll walk the outdoor exhibits starting with the Asia Trail. Then we’ll walk down Olmsted Walk (the main thoroughfare) downhill to visit the primates and Great Apes. When we’re done contemplating what it would be like if apes ruled over the Earth\, we’ll complete the downhill trek to the Great Cats exhibit to get some of our best shots of the lions and tigers. The surrounding area also offers lots to capture before we begin our hike back uphill. Traveling the American trail\, we’ll complete our loop starting with the otters and bears and finishing with the elephants. Unfortunately\, zoo staff is still working on the birdhouse which is scheduled to open in 2023. \nCheck out the results from our past field trips in 2017 and 2014:https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/Zoo/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/National-Zoo-September/ \nEquipment:· Tripods are welcome. Please be mindful of where you set up.· Bring your longest lens because some exhibits can be pretty deep. 200mm is capable\, but 300mm or higher is best to fill the frame with your subject. Those without long lenses will find subjects among the humans and smaller exhibits\, so don’t skip out. · Comfortable walking shoes for walking. The zoo is built on a hill and we’ll be covering up to two miles.·When:Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, November 13\, 2022\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nWhere:We’ll meet at the Visitor's Center just inside the Connecticut Ave. entrance. This is the best location to start our safari as it’s right next to our first destination. Please note that the outdoor zoo exhibits will be open prior to our scheduled meetup so feel free to come early and snoop around nearby exhibits. Indoor exhibits open around 9 am. \nDirections:If you plan to drive\, be aware that entrance to the parking lots is limited to Connecticut Ave. only. You cannot gain entry from the Harvard St NW entrance of the Rock Creek Pkwy. That said\, Rock Creek Pkwy is still the best road. Just take the CathedralAve NW exit before the Beach Dr. NW split. The National Zoo is metro accessible\, though it's a little extra walking. If you want to walk downhill to the zoo\, take the Red line to Cleveland Park. The Woodley Park-Zoo stop is a little closer to the main entrance\, but it requires an uphill hike. \nParking and tickets:Tickets to the zoo are free but reservations are required. Parking is free to members\, but non-members need to purchase tickets for their vehicle which will include free ticket(s) to the zoo. If you want free parking\, you will need to purchase a premiere levelmembership before you reserve your tickets to this field trip. Coordinators will monitor the weather and provide guidance by Tuesday\, November 8\, 2022\, based on weather predictions. \nCOVID precautions:This event is outdoors\, the zoo paths are generally wide\, and the zoo is limiting timed tickets to prevent enormous crowds. Masks are not required by the zoo. You are likely to come into close contact with other humans in the outdoor exhibits as well as indoors. We anticipate this event will be relatively low risk. However\, there is a high risk of fun. Should you crack a smile or laugh\, please notify your coordinators immediately of your case of euphoria. \nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023* Photographs courtesy Rena Schild and Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Education & Training – How to Make (Realistic) Composites with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:The online world is replete with photographic composites: many funny\, most poorly done. Gary is going to walk you through the process that will help you create believable composites. When a composite is believable the emotional impact is magnified. He will address and demonstrate such topics as perspective\, color\, saturation\, shadows and other elements. \nBio: \nGary\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for nearly 30 years. He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens\, bathrooms\, and choosing paint colors. He is presently involved in commercial real estate investment. \nHe started taking photographs of his daughter’s sporting events about 10 years ago\, and discovered that post-processing the images provided a welcome creative outlet. Then and today\, he has never stopped being an ardent student of Photoshop. Its potential never ceases to amaze. \nHe received the Best in Show award at Nature Visions in 2019\, Best in Show (Photo Art Division) at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions in 2022\, and the Ollie Fife Award in 2022 from the NVPS. His photographs of Civil War battlefields have appeared in Hallowed Ground\, a publication of the American Battlefield Trust. \n.His other hobby is powerlifting where he has competed nationally – but due to aches and pains\, no longer competes.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Alaska Brown Bears with Len Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Alaska Brown Bears presentation is a collection of photos taken by Len Johnson during a photography workshop led by Tom and Cree Bol in July 2022. This was a 7-day adventure that started in Anchorage Alaska. The 8-person group of photographers flew in Piper Cub planes to Salmon Creek Lodge in Lake Clark National Park. We landed on the beach in front of the lodge and stayed there for six days. \nEach day was a new adventure as we traveled in open carts pulled by 4×4 vehicles in search of roaming bears. We also walked out on the beach behind the lodge and came within 30 yards of the mother bears strolling with their cubs. The bears were grazing on sedge grass and digging in the beach sand for clams. Even though we were extremely close to the animals\, they never appeared to feel threatened by the photographers\, and we also felt secure in our distance. Most often a mother bear had two or three cubs near her. Our workshop included early morning expeditions and afternoon sessions that lasted until dusk. \nThe trip ended with a helicopter flight to the Kink Glacier where we landed on the tundra. We debarked from the helicopter and strapped spikes to our boots to give us traction on the ice. The scene was both desolate and beautiful as we carefully walked across the ice. Actually\, it felt like we were walking on the moon! \nThis was a “bucket list” adventure that I look forward to sharing with NVPS and hope it makes you want to experience it yourself. \nBIO \nAfter graduating with a BFA degree in graphic design from the University of Illinois\, Len served three years in the U.S. Army as a photographer during the Vietnam War era. Upon completing his enlistment commitment\, he joined a 3-person design firm in Washington\, D.C.\, where he worked for seven years. He began his business career when he purchased the firm from the owner upon his retirement. Len operated his firm JDG Communications (JDG)\, for 30 years. JDG tripled in size and became an award-winning brand development and integrated marketing firm with national accounts. Government agencies selected his firm for high-profile federal programs\, including the FTC Do-Not-Call launch campaign\, the SBA Business.gov website launch\, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Centennial celebration\, and the rebranding of the U.S. Agency for International Development. \nThe growth of the business with its talented team and valuable government contracts made JDG an acquisition candidate for other integrated marketing firms in metropolitan Washington\, D.C. In 2009 he sold his firm to Sage Communications (Sage). \nHe has been a member of NVPS since 2014 and appreciates the opportunities it provides for learning from experienced professional photographers’ presentations and competition critiques. He also values the friendships he has made through NVPS meetings and events.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Africa\, its Culture\, Stories\, and Amazing Wildlife: A Different World with Patricia Deege
DESCRIPTION:The African bush is a world that many of us aspire to visit but perhaps will never see. Patricia’s travels there began in 1989\, with subsequent visits in 2013 and 2015. Some changes were evident during that time period\, but the excitement and fascination of seeing the multitude of wildlife in its natural environment never fades. This story takes you from the jungles of Botswana\, to the vast open spaces of Kenya’s Massai Mara\, the majesty of Victoria Falls\, the marvels of Kafue National Park in Zambia and Huange in Zimbabwe\, and finally the street life of Arusha in Tanzania. \nPatricia Deege’s Bio: \nA native of England\, Patricia’s artistic journey began in childhood with watercolor painting and a box camera. \nNow retired and a serious amateur photographer\, she has been a member of Vienna Photographic Society (since 1997)\, Northern Virginia Photographic Society (since 1999)\, League of Reston Artists and the Vienna Arts Society. She participates regularly in exhibits and competitions\, winning many awards\, among them “Best in Show” at the Claude Moore Photography Exhibit in Herndon\, the prestigious Nature Visions Expo in Manassas\, and the Vienna Town Photography Show. She was twice awarded “Photographer of the Year for Vienna Photographic Society. She has been published in the International Library of Photography\, several magazines such as Shutterbug and Outdoor Photographer\, and in camera club newsletters and websites. She rarely leaves home without a camera and often finds opportunities to photograph in unexpected places; she enjoys creating slideshows and videos which illustrate her travels. \nFrom her place behind the lens\, she has learned the art of seeing the unexpected and often unnoticed\, and the fascination for photography has greatly enriched her life. Imparting that fascination to even just a few other people has made all the efforts worthwhile. \nNature’s MiraclesPatricia Deege

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Flower Photography with Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is all about FLOWERS…some photographed in nature\, some in a studio setting\, and some captured in grocery stores with my cell phone! Each flower has its own personality and I love photographing their beauty. \nBio: \nGeorgette Grossman’s love of photography began in earnest when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born in 2006. Before then she had played with point’n’shoot cameras but never understood what was really going on inside the “box.” The following year\, when Ava began to move around faster than her point’n’shoot could capture her smiles\, it was time to buy and learn how to use a DSLR (Nikon D80 was her first). Georgette took a class through Fairfax County Adult Ed. Her first instructor\, John Gonsalves\, was wonderful. He told the class on the first day of instruction that we all had expensive cameras with lots of automatic features\, but we were going to learn how to shoot manual! Initially the class was terrified\, but somehow the concept of aperture\, shutter speed\, and exposure fell into place. Tell a story he would say; fill the frame! Georgette’s journey in photography had begun. \nGeorgette learned about the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) at Meadowlark in February\, 2008 and she joined shortly thereafter. The club was a source of endless people who LOVED photography as much as she did—folks who were willing to share their talents to help her improve her photography. The meetings provided wonderful programs and hands-on workshops that made learning fun. \nGeorgette especially remembers participating in a Portfolio Project where Joe Miller announced that in this day of digital technology almost anyone could take a decent picture\, but it took effort to capture great images. What a true statement! Monthly competition became a way to learn what makes an image better. Watching everyone’s images being critiqued\, became a useful learning experience. \nIn 2010 Georgette was elected the Secretary/Historian for NVPS. She was elected the president of NVPS for the 2014-2015 term and has served as an Advisor to the Board ever since. \nShe photographed with a variety of Nikon DSLR’s but switched to mirrorless Fuji in 2016. Currently she uses the Fuji X-T3 and loves the fact that she can “see” what the image will look like before she presses the trigger. She also photographs with her Pixel 6 cell phone camera. \nGeorgette uses her photography to share her vision of the world with others. She captures moments she wants to remember; her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, nature. Flowers are a favorite. During the COVID pandemic she did not get out to photograph much\, but\, every time she grocery shopped she captured the flowers in the Giant and practiced various post-processing techniques in Lightroom\, Photoshop\, DXO Nik\, and Topaz Studio 2. Some of those images are in her presentation. \nShe had a solo exhibit at Beanetics Coffee Roasters coffee shop in Annandale\, VA. . Her images\, A Man and his Dog and Quiet Lunch were selected for Volume 31 of The Northern Virginia Review\, Spring 2017. Her image African Daisy was the cover image in The Washington Gardener Magazine in 2019. Georgette has exhibited her images at The Art League in Alexandria\, VA\, the Glen Echo Annual Labor Day Art Show\, the ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Exhibit\, Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions Expo annual exhibit\, Washington Gardener Magazine\, and the Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit. Her images can be seen at https://georgette-grossman.pixels.com/.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Abstracts – Just for Fun with Joan Barker
DESCRIPTION:This gallery presentation will showcase how much Joan enjoys using Camera Motion and computer manipulation to create images beyond reality. \nJoan joined NVPS in 2015. Although Joan has always enjoyed photographing family and places she visited\, she was not sure that she would enjoy being a part of a photography club. Joan was using a point and shoot camera at the time and knew nothing about F stop\, Shutter Speed\, or ISO. Needless to say Joan has learned a lot in the past 7 years and now shoots with the mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \nShe enjoys shooting landscapes\, flowers\, and abstracts. She loves doing post processing on the computer as it encourages her creative juices. This naturally led to her interest in abstracts as there are so many opportunities to manipulate an image digitally. During the pandemic\, she joined her churches’ photographic team and spent many hours safely documenting their events both outdoors and eventually inside as well. \nJoan was an educator and taught elementary school before her children were born. After kids\, she chose part time teaching and eventually administration in Early Childhood. \nYes\, Joan is happy she joined NVPS as the group has inspired her to try new techniques and enabled her to enjoy the works of so many excellent photographers.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Eastern State Penitentiary
DESCRIPTION:Image by Jeff Hancock\nIt’s time to visit a very old favorite\, Eastern State Penitentiary. This former prison (1829-1971)\, turned museum and historic site once housed notorious criminals as bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. \nThe prison is modeled after a hub and spoke plan. Vaulted cell blocks resemble the church nave while the cells themselves were designed for isolation and penance. Photographically\, this destination offers architecture\, decrepit walls\, peeling paint\, and crumbling sky-lit cells. Visit the barber’s chairs (two of them)\, the surgery\, medical wing\, and more. \nPhotography policy: https://www.easternstate.org/visit/site-rentals/photography-filmmaking \nCheck out the results from our past field trips in 2019 and 2015:https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/FieldTrips-2018-2019/Eastern-State-Penitentiary-April/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/Eastern-State/ \nImage by Bill Millhouser\nEquipment: \n\nTripods are permissible provided you have paid for the photography equipment pass with your admission.\nWide angle lenses are ideal\, but considering the narrow spaces\, an ultra-wide will also work well for certain architectural shots.\nComfortable walking shoes for walking. The interior is surprisingly long\, but the facility does offer the occasional bench to pause.\nBuildings do not have climate controls so dress accordingly to the outdoor season.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, September 24\, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m*No rain date scheduled \nWhere: \nImage by Steve Glintz\n2027 Fairmount Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19130 \nDriving time will be nearly 3 hours and will pass through tolls for tunnels through Baltimore and the JFK Memorial Hwy. (non-MD E-ZPass tolls estimated at $3×2 + $8) \nOur group will gather outside the main entrance across from OCF Coffee House (opposite to the corner at Fairmount Ave and N. 21st St.) for some socializing. Arrive early for a bit of coffee and pastries at the a fore mentioned coffee house. \nOnce paid\, we’re free to roam the facility. Please consider joining us for lunch at 1pm. We’ll decide on the location\, which will be on Fairmount Ave within one block of the prison. \n“Restrooms on site are limited to a three-stall restroom trailer with flush toilets and running water (located near the start of your tour) and two port-a-potties (located near The Big Graph at the end of the main tour route)” – https://www.easternstate.org/safety \nParking and tickets: \nImage by Georgette Grossman\nFree parallel parking on streets around the block that border Eastern State have a 3 hour limit. Be sure to read the street signs as spots opposite the side bordering Eastern State are not free. Do not anticipate parking in this zone for more than 3 hours (even if you find another spot on the block)\, you will get a ticket. \nThere’s also a parking lot in the adjacent block (between N.23rd and N.22nd Streets). For $14\, you can park here for up to 12 hours. \nAdmission tickets are $17 ($15 seniors\, $13 students). There is a $2 surcharge if buying your tickets in person. Photography equipment pass (admission for your tripod): $10. If we can muster 15+ members we can get $11 tickets ($10 seniors\, $8 students) and $5 equipment passes. ** \n** If you are attending\, please email fieldtrips (contact information can be found at Board Contacts) by Saturday September 10h. Steven will keep a tally on the members who have signed up and notify everyone via email on Tuesday September 13th if we have met the minimum requirements and who has signed up. Only members on Steven’s list will be eligible for the discounted admissions on the day of the field trip. If your name is not on the list\, please contact Steven directly (instructions will be provided). \nImage by Steven Glintz\nCOVID precautions: \nThere are photogenic locations both indoors and out. We are not anticipating huge crowds\, but some indoor spaces are narrow so you may be in close contact with people outside your normal bubble. With variants of the virus on the rise\, you may want to carry a face covering just in case. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy of Steven Glintz\, Georgette Grossman\, Jeff Hancock\, Bill Millhouser\, and Mike Whalen \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage by Mike Whalen\n\n\n\nImage by Steven Glintz
