SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Tribal Angola with Kathryn Mohrman
DESCRIPTION:(Kathryn’s Program Perspective) \nWe visited seven tribes in southwestern Angola\, people who are living as their ancestors have for hundreds of years.  These people are painfully poor in an economic sense\, but rich in culture and tradition.  My goal in sharing these photos is to convey the dignity of the people we encountered. I was especially intrigued by the women we met as I learned to distinguish among the tribes based their sense of beauty.  It was amazing to see the effort they took in creating elaborate hairstyles or wearing thousands of beads as an everyday matter. \nMy fondest memory\, however\, is not captured in any of these photos.  One morning I slept late in my tent so I was the only person from the tour group in camp.  In my search for coffee I discovered a local family warming themselves around the log fire.  With my coffee cup I sat in one of the camp chairs near where they were crouched down.  \nOne of the women started talking to me—of course I didn’t understand her language but I could hear the kindness in her voice.  So I started talking to her–of course she didn’t understand my English but I hope she could hear the kindness in my voice.  For ten minutes we “conversed” and built a fleeting bond that underscored our common humanity. \nBIO: \nAfter more than 30 years as a teacher\, administrator\, and college president\, Kathryn Mohrman turned to photography as her main focus in retirement. Her love of travel has allowed her to explore cultures across five continents and to share her experiences with the viewers of her images.  Since most people will not have an opportunity to travel to Bhutan or Cambodia or Angola\, she considers her photographs as an extension of her years in teaching as she seeks to instill a sense of our shared humanity. \nwww.jadeforestphotography.smugmug.com

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Italy's Adriatic coast towns with Clark Barker
DESCRIPTION:Scenes from Clark and wife Joan’s last overseas pre-covid journey to Rome\, Malta\, and the Adriatic Coast of Italy by small ship\, ending in Venice. \nBio: \nFollowing college and gainful employment Clark purchased a Minolta SRT101 which was mostly used to produce slides.  After a couple more Minoltas\, a digital 8 megapixel Olympus and several Canons he went mirrorless with a Canon R5 the first day it was available.  Clark’s photographic experience has mostly been as a tourist taking snapshots of interesting places visited and photos of his son and daughter when they were children.  After retirement Clark and wife Joan took several overseas trips with organized tour groups. \nClark joined NVPS in 2015 and was the class two color print Photographer of the Year for 2016-2017.  NVPS membership has led to vastly improved comprehension of shutter speed\, aperture and ISO.  He uses Lightroom/Photoshop CC and Topaz for postprocessing.   \nHe enjoys taking travel photos\, especially landscapes\, but has more recently begun exploring other types of photography such as wildlife and macro. \nPhotos on the 2019 trip to Malta and Italy were taken with a Canon 5D mark III camera.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): East Africa - Again with Nancy Dubiell and Bill Vanderpool
DESCRIPTION:Even though we have been to East Africa before\, we welcomed this\, our fifth trip.  Although the land is the same\, the people and the animals are always different.  This trip\, with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)\, included Kenya\, Tanzania\, and Rwanda. \nBIO:    \nNancy and Bill have been members of NVPS since\, well\, since the Washington Gas days. They started getting more serious about photography as their travels commenced\, first within the States and then overseas.  This was their 22nd trip with OAT. \nThey started with slides and\, as they transitioned to digital\, kept the old habit of trying to get the image right in the camera\, with minimal post processing.  Most of their photography is of their travels.  Bill likes street photography and Nancy leans towards landscapes.  Both enjoy wildlife photography. \nAfter a long dry spell of traveling due to Covid\, they have recently started back with a summer trip to Ireland and this one of 3 ½ weeks to Africa.  They are already signed up for at least one trip this year and another in 2024.  Both use Canons and have recently changed to the Tamron 18×400 as their “all-in-one” travel lens.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Library of Congress
DESCRIPTION:Our February field trip will be to the largest library in the world.  The Library of Congress is not only home to over 38 million books\, 14 million photographs\, 8 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts\, the Thomas Jefferson building also happens to be DC’s most glamorously decorated interiors. \nThe Thomas Jefferson building\, as it has been known since 1980\, originally opened November 1\, 1897 and was the first public building in DC to be built with electricity installed.  The Italian Renaissance inspired design was decorated by more than 40 American painters and sculptors demonstrating contemporary American culture and technological ingenuity.  The secret is out and today’s 1.6 million annual visitors are frequently amazed at such a facility.  Photographers will not only be inspired by the architecture\, color\, and design\, they will also find various hidden details scattered throughout.  The Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson building is an amazing spectacle not to be missed. \nWe’ll visit the Jefferson Building on President’s Day when they traditionally open the Main Reading Room to the public.  Although the library staff could not verify these plans\, we know there will be lots to see regardless of whether they open the Main Reading Room or not. \nPlease familiarize yourself with their photography policies: \nhttps://www.loc.gov/static/portals/visit/documents/PhotographyGuidelines.pdf \nCheck out the images from earlier field trips: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/Library-of-Congress-February-2020/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/LOC-022017/ \nTickets: \nVisiting the Library of Congress’ Jefferson Building now requires timed tickets for entry.  Tickets become available 30 days in advance.  To reserve your ticket\, follow the directions at the following link: \nhttps://loc.usedirect.com/LOC/ \nEquipment: \n\nMany of your images will be taken with a standard or wide angle lens. DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Brenda Wilson\, joined by Deb Rose\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement. Self-analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. \nThe Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 14. Final reviews will be April 11 for the first group and May 16 for the second group. SUMMARY:Programs: Storytelling\, Videomaking and Photography with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Humans have been sharing stories since they first learned to speak. However\, how we tell those stories has changed over time. We started by painting our stories on the walls of caves and then learned to write and paint and later invented photography and filmmaking. Story Telling at 24 Frames Per Second will cover the advantages\, disadvantages\, and differences between still photography and filmmaking as well as why and how to incorporate filmmaking in your story telling. It’s a journey and\, if for nothing else\, one that will improve your still photography. \nBIO \nBrian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. \nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes\, and when filmmaking\, the human condition\, telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. While having his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic. Brain is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy to understand ways \nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking and just enjoy life.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – In Search of Hummingbirds from Peru with Kimxuan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Kimxuan traveled to Peru to photograph birds with her fellow photographers for 12 days in February of 2022. In Peru\, there were about 400 species of birds to photograph. However\, for this presentation\, Kimxuan will only concentrate on the hummingbirds that she was able to photograph. Some of them were the most sought-after birds in the world\, including the most spectacular of all hummingbirds\,  the Marvelous Spatuletail.     \n\n\n\nKimxuan Nguyen studied photography in college when the photography world was still using film and darkroom to process photos. Fast-forward\, Kimxuan joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) in 2019. She had received several Monthly Competition Awards and Year End Awards. Some of the awards were Advanced Color Print of the Year\, Advanced Color Digital Image of the Year (twice) \, Photographer of the Year\, Photographer of the Year – Versatile Advanced\, and Ollie Fife Award. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Kimxuan is the Lead Instructor for Advanced Level class and an Assistant to the President of the Vietnamese Photographic Society (VNPS). She wrote and contributed photography lessons as well as lessons on portfolio projects. She also served as part of the judging panels for VNPS. In addition\, Kimxuan has received the Portfolio Project of the Year and Honorable Excellent Service from the society.  \n\n\n\nKimxuan likes to travel within the United States as well as the world to capture mostly landscaping and wildlife.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Egypt\, Jordan and the Valleys of the Vendors with Bill Corbett
DESCRIPTION:This fall Bill and Judy Corbett joined a group tour to see the pyramids in Egypt\, Petra in Jordan\, and many other antiquities in between.  Along the way\, Bill took the opportunity to photograph not only the iconic sites\, but also the people at work in those places.  Bill often shot surreptiously and silently\, using a wide angle lens\, the camera upside down at hip level\, and set for a high frame rate. The denizens of the “valleys of the vendors” were his favorite subjects \nA photojournalist in college\, Bill Corbett returned to photography fifteen or so years ago with the advent of digital tools.  He enjoys nature and travel photography the most.  He has been a member of NVPS since 2011 and is a past president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions).  Bill and Judy moved to Aldie in Loudoun County in 2017 after 23 years in McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He served for two decades as a U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Flora and Fauna: Four Seasons in the Washington DC Area with Eva Lanyi
DESCRIPTION:For the past year or so\, Eva stayed close to home for her photography adventures.  Exploring local gardens and natural areas for plants and animals to photograph was incredibly rewarding.  She was able to capture nature in all four seasons and experience the changes it undergoes with time’s passage.  Starting and ending with spring\, her slideshow will take you on the journey with her. \nEva has been interested in photography since childhood and still has her first camera\, a Kodak Brownie Starmatic.  She dabbled in film photography for many years until about 10 years ago\, when she got serious with her first digital camera.  Now she spends much of her spare time enjoying photography and improving her skills.

DESCRIPTION:In January\, our club will visit the sites around the Old Post Office and Clock Tower.  This is a wonderful winter destination for urban landscape\, architecture\, and street photography. \nWe’ll begin our tour by gathering along 12th Street NW in front of the Woodrow Wilson Plaza where some may find their first shots of the morning.  Following our usual meet and greet\, we’ll move indoors to escape the cold January morning.  We’ll enter the Old Post Office using the public entrance on 12th St.  A hallway outlining the history of the building will lead us to an elevator that will take us to the top floor of the main building with a view of the renovated hotel atrium.  The exhibit continues to the clock tower elevator where we’ll go up to witness the views from on top of the third tallest building in Washington DC. \nWhen we’re done peeping at rooftops and the outdoor temperatures have warmed up\, we’ll return to the street for some external shots including views of The Capitol down Pennsylvania Ave.  We’ll also go on the hunt as we wander our way around the Woodrow Wilson Plaza picking out the nooks and crannies created by all the paths in and out. \nDepending on the outcome from our meet and greet discussions\, we may decide to visit one of the nearby restaurants for lunch.  There is also an indoor food court in the Reagan building. \nA lot of renovations have occurred since our last visit in 2008: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2007-2008-Field-Trips/Oldpostoffice/ \nEquipment: \n\nStandard and wide angle lenses will work well for those who want to focus on architecture and street photography. DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Street Photography at Night” within the past three (3) years \nStreet Photography at Night:  \nFor this theme “street photography” is defined as a photograph featuring (1) the human condition\, or (2) the relationship or interaction between people and their surroundings.  There should be a person in the image\, although that person need not be the subject of the photo. A street photo example could be a candid\, semi-candid or spontaneous (but not staged) photo of a person (or persons) in a public\, private or open place doing something other than posing for you to take their picture.  This is also night photography meaning the image should be taken after sunset and before sunrise. \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge is Denise Silva. \nBIO: \nDenise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. DESCRIPTION:Like most NVPS members\, Stan and Judy have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what was it that caught your eye\, did you convey that vision to the viewer.  \nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images. The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose. Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help\nExperiments with new processing techniques\nImages you are considering for competition\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer. You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. You also can use Zoom chat to send a direct message only to Education & Training Coordinator Art Rose and he will ask the question or make the comment for you. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 27\, 2022 to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Stan and Judy to review them before the January 10 meeting.  \nSubmitting Images \nYou can submit up to three images.  \nResize Your Image(s)Size images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically. DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham has been fortunate to do some amazing things in her life\, but the time she spends doing landscape photography\, remains at the top of her list. Judy’s E&T presentation is about her approach to the art\, covering topics such as her gear and accessories\, camera settings\, time of day for best results\, various composition techniques\, and challenges in the field. This presentation is sure to provide useful information for novice and intermediate photographers\, and advanced photographers will similarly find useful information about how she sees compositions. \nBIO:  \nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life. She retired March 1\, 2018\, after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 with the goal of meeting local photographers\, doing more local photography\, and learning more about the art of photography. Judy has served in various Board positions for NVPS\, including President for the 2021-2022 club year. \nJudy is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in more recent years she has expanded her travel to include such places as Alaska\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Bolivia\, Patagonia\, and the Canadian Rockies and Yellowstone\, in winter. She does not let the cold or bad weather get in her way. \nMost recently Judy joined the Capital Photography Center as an instructor. She will be sharing her passion for landscape photography and teaching novice to intermediate photographers the principles of composition in the field.

We will have a fog machine to play with\, several stations with water activities\, a black light set-up\, and more. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Unspoiled-South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:South Georgia Island is famous as the destination for Ernest Shackleton\, the explorer whose expedition ship was crushed in the Antarctic ice in November 1915. The story of how he got to South Georgia and returned to rescue his entire crew is the stuff of legend.  The island is in the middle of nowhere\, 870 miles east of the Falklands which themselves are about 300 miles East of South America.  Both are under British Overseas Territory rule\, with about 3500 inhabitants on the Falklands and 8 to 40 seasonal researchers on South Georgia\, \nOur National Geographic expedition departed Ushuaia\, Argentina in March 2016 and stopped in several remote areas in the Falklands for bird viewing (mostly penguins) and landscapes before steaming two days further east to South Georgia Island.  There we cruised for seven days\, going ashore numerous times via zodiac boats as the wildlife and scenery presented opportunities and as the weather allowed.  With no predators the wildlife is unconcerned about humans and we could advance to prescribed minimum distances\, although the penguins frequently came quite close on their own. Then we had a rough three days plowing through heavy seas to visit Port Stanley\, Falklands\, and an interior sheep farm before another day at sea to return to Ushuaia and our flight home. \nThis presentation will describe this journey and include photos of penguins\, albatross\, and other birds\, seals\, and scenery from these desolate but incredibly beautiful and pristine islands. \nBIO \nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, has placed in numerous NVPS monthly competitions\, and was awarded their Class Three Digital Photographer of the Year designation in 2017.   \nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic.  He switched to the micro-four-thirds system in 2014 and uses Olympus E-M1 bodies (currently Mark III) and a combination of Olympus (12-40mm f2.8 Pro; 40-150mm f2.8 Pro; and 17mm f1.7)\, Panasonic/Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4\, and Sigma 56 f1.4 lenses. \nHis web site is www.wayneguentherphotography.com

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Arizona Skies with Debra Mastronardi
DESCRIPTION:Debra will present a collection of images from storm chasing during Arizona’s monsoon season. \nDebra was introduced to photography by a classmate while in college\, and was instantly  hooked.  She gets inspired by what is possible when looking through the lens.  Growing up in New York City combined with her love of travel\, she explored different genres from cityscapes\, landscapes\, architectural\, and most recently\, street.  She discovered she has always been a street photographer at heart but never realized that until she digitized all her photos.  Debra enjoys exploring new genres of photography and honing her street photography skills. She joined NVPS in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:For a few weeks every year\, nature photographers converge on the Appalachian Mountains to capture the beautiful fall foliage. Yet this unique region offers year-round opportunities for image making\, as Dave hopes to convey to you. \nDave Lattanzi got into photography over 20 years ago after finding his mother’s old Canon AE-1\, primarily to impress his girlfriend. His love of photography has lasted far longer than that relationship. His photographic journey started with traditional black and white darkroom processes that still influence the way he shoots today. \nHe has a love of both nature and travel photography\, often in combination. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world with his camera\, having visited 50 states\, 5 continents\, and more countries than he can count. But his heart belongs to the West Virginia highlands\, and he is devoted to capturing the unique beauty of those lands. He counts Fay Godwin\, Bruce Percy\, Clyde Butcher\, and Galen Rowell among the myriad photographers that have inspired him over the years. He has been a member of NVPS since 2018. DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Prepared Food” within the past three (3) years \nPrepared Food:  \nFor this theme you should make images of prepared food that is good enough to eat\, whatever it may be – a plate of fried fish\, a soufflé ready to collapse\, a steaming bowl of pea soup with home-made bread\, etc.  This food must be cooked or prepared and ready to eat.  Creative presentation of the food is encouraged.  No images of raw\, unprepared food not ready to be eaten. \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge for this competition is Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeida. \nBIO: \nAlain is a professional photographer\, photojournalist\, artist\, food blogger\, and creator and owner of his own photography and travel business\, Thru Alain’s Eyes\, LLC. He was born and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, and spent nearly 18 years there working as a photojournalist for various media entities\, photographing high-profile cultural and social events like the visits of President Barack Obama and Pope Francis\, The Rolling Stones concert\, and Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel runway show.  He was also selected by the US Embassy to be the official photographer at their embassy re-opening ceremony with Secretary of State John Kerry. \nIn September 2014 he began a blog entitled “Taste of Cuba” with the goal of sharing Cuban culinary trends and traditions with the rest of the world.  It featured his photographs and stories of the chefs and cuisine that are shaping Cuba today.  Alain believes that food brings us all closer together.  Whenever he travels\, he prefers eating where the locals eat.  If you really want to experience a place\, experience its food—those are the ingredients that define a people\, and every dish can be a lesson in culture. \nWith the renewal of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States\, he began to offer his services as a local guide for photography and culinary tours in Havana and other parts of Cuba.  In 2018 he moved to the United States and is now based in Bethesda.  Starting in March 2019 he began designing\, organizing\, and guiding his own tours and road trips for small groups visiting his beloved homeland. When he is not leading tours to Cuba\, he works as a freelance photographer in the Washington area\, offering photography and video services for theatrical productions\, school events and activities\, and graduation and family portraits.  With his background in photojournalism\, he excels at creating compelling and authentic photos that capture your attention. \nHe loves exploring the world around him and telling the stories of those he meets during his travels.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Smithsonian's National Zoo
DESCRIPTION:NVPS November 2022 Field TripPlease join us for an autumn morning safari around the zoo. The Smithsonian’sNational Zoo is a popular destination renowned for its wide assortment of exoticanimals. One of the best features of the National Zoo is the relatively naturalenvironments curated for each animal. Most of these photogenic animals you’ll meet are ready and willing to pose for your camera. Our task will be to capture their best in the warm morning light among the most natural backgrounds we can find. We’ll walk the outdoor exhibits starting with the Asia Trail. Then we’ll walk down Olmsted Walk (the main thoroughfare) downhill to visit the primates and Great Apes. When we’re done contemplating what it would be like if apes ruled over the Earth\, we’ll complete the downhill trek to the Great Cats exhibit to get some of our best shots of the lions and tigers. The surrounding area also offers lots to capture before we begin our hike back uphill. Please be mindful of where you set up.· Bring your longest lens because some exhibits can be pretty deep. 200mm is capable\, but 300mm or higher is best to fill the frame with your subject. Those without long lenses will find subjects among the humans and smaller exhibits\, so don’t skip out. · Comfortable walking shoes for walking. The zoo is built on a hill and we’ll be covering up to two miles.·When:Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, November 13\, 2022\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nWhere:We’ll meet at the Visitor's Center just inside the Connecticut Ave. entrance. This is the best location to start our safari as it’s right next to our first destination. Please note that the outdoor zoo exhibits will be open prior to our scheduled meetup so feel free to come early and snoop around nearby exhibits. Indoor exhibits open around 9 am. \nDirections:If you plan to drive\, be aware that entrance to the parking lots is limited to Connecticut Ave. only. You cannot gain entry from the Harvard St NW entrance of the Rock Creek Pkwy. That said\, Rock Creek Pkwy is still the best road. Just take the CathedralAve NW exit before the Beach Dr. NW split. The National Zoo is metro accessible\, though it's a little extra walking. If you want to walk downhill to the zoo\, take the Red line to Cleveland Park. The Woodley Park-Zoo stop is a little closer to the main entrance\, but it requires an uphill hike. \nParking and tickets:Tickets to the zoo are free but reservations are required. Parking is free to members\, but non-members need to purchase tickets for their vehicle which will include free ticket(s) to the zoo. If you want free parking\, you will need to purchase a premiere levelmembership before you reserve your tickets to this field trip. Coordinators will monitor the weather and provide guidance by Tuesday\, November 8\, 2022\, based on weather predictions. \nCOVID precautions:This event is outdoors\, the zoo paths are generally wide\, and the zoo is limiting timed tickets to prevent enormous crowds. Masks are not required by the zoo. You are likely to come into close contact with other humans in the outdoor exhibits as well as indoors. We anticipate this event will be relatively low risk. However\, there is a high risk of fun. SUMMARY:Education & Training – How to Make (Realistic) Composites with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:The online world is replete with photographic composites: many funny\, most poorly done.  Gary is going to walk you through the process that will help you create believable composites.  When a composite is believable the emotional impact is magnified.  He will address and demonstrate such topics as perspective\, color\, saturation\, shadows and other elements. \nBio: \nGary\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for nearly 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens\, bathrooms\, and choosing paint colors.  He is presently involved in commercial real estate investment. \nHe started taking photographs of his daughter’s sporting events about 10 years ago\, and discovered that post-processing the images provided a welcome creative outlet.  Then and today\, he has never stopped being an ardent student of Photoshop.  Its potential never ceases to amaze.  \nHe received the Best in Show award at Nature Visions in 2019\, Best in Show (Photo Art Division) at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions in 2022\,  and the Ollie Fife Award in 2022 from the NVPS.  His photographs of Civil War battlefields have appeared in Hallowed Ground\, a publication of the American Battlefield Trust. \n.His other hobby is powerlifting where he has competed nationally – but due to aches and pains\, no longer competes.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Travelling the Mother Road: A Route 66 Trip with Art and Deb Rose
DESCRIPTION:Deb and Art enjoy travelling and sharing their experiences and adventures through their photography. Over 28 days in September of 2021\, they travelled 3\,619 miles on Old Route 66 from Chicago\, Illinois to Los Angeles\, California. This had always been a dream to travel the Mother Road. Art and Deb will share their planning\, learning\, and highlights of the road trip. You can also read their Route 66 travel blog on Shorewoods Photography- Boarding Group 2 \nBio \nArt and Deb’s interest in photography blossomed over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, Art as a chemical engineer and Deb as a pediatric physical therapist\, they have been living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography. Their travels have taken them through North\, Central and South America\, Europe and Asia.  Domestic road trips include Utah & Arizona\, Route 66\, Louisiana\, West Virginia\, and Maine (complete with puffins). They enjoy all types of photography encountered on their travels: landscape\, street\, wildlife\, architectural\, night sky and every flavor in-between. \nMembers of NVPS since 2018\, Art and Deb enjoy learning and developing creative skills to enhance their photography. Deb blends watercolor painting and brush effects with her photography to create photo artistic pieces\, and Art enjoys applying new techniques to landscape\, wildlife and still-life photos. \n “We see photography as a way to connect with others\, capture the experiences of new places\, and discover different perspectives of familiar places”.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Alaska Brown Bears with Len Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Alaska Brown Bears presentation is a collection of photos taken by Len Johnson during a photography workshop led by Tom and Cree Bol in July 2022. This was a 7-day adventure that started in Anchorage Alaska. The 8-person group of photographers flew in Piper Cub planes to Salmon Creek Lodge in Lake Clark National Park. We landed on the beach in front of the lodge and stayed there for six days. \nEach day was a new adventure as we traveled in open carts pulled by 4×4 vehicles in search of roaming bears. We also walked out on the beach behind the lodge and came within 30 yards of the mother bears strolling with their cubs. The bears were grazing on sedge grass and digging in the beach sand for clams. Even though we were extremely close to the animals\, they never appeared to feel threatened by the photographers\, and we also felt secure in our distance. Most often a mother bear had two or three cubs near her. Our workshop included early morning expeditions and afternoon sessions that lasted until dusk. \nThe trip ended with a helicopter flight to the Kink Glacier where we landed on the tundra. We debarked from the helicopter and strapped spikes to our boots to give us traction on the ice. The scene was both desolate and beautiful as we carefully walked across the ice. Actually\, it felt like we were walking on the moon! \nThis was a “bucket list” adventure that I look forward to sharing with NVPS and hope it makes you want to experience it yourself. \nBIO \nAfter graduating with a BFA degree in graphic design from the University of Illinois\, Len served three years in the U.S. Army as a photographer during the Vietnam War era. Upon completing his enlistment commitment\, he joined a 3-person design firm in Washington\, D.C.\, where he worked for seven years. He began his business career when he purchased the firm from the owner upon his retirement. Len operated his firm JDG Communications (JDG)\, for 30 years. JDG tripled in size and became an award-winning brand development and integrated marketing firm with national accounts. Government agencies selected his firm for high-profile federal programs\, including the FTC Do-Not-Call launch campaign\, the SBA Business.gov website launch\, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Centennial celebration\, and the rebranding of the U.S. Agency for International Development. \nThe growth of the business with its talented team and valuable government contracts made JDG an acquisition candidate for other integrated marketing firms in metropolitan Washington\, D.C. In 2009 he sold his firm to Sage Communications (Sage). \nHe has been a member of NVPS since 2014 and appreciates the opportunities it provides for learning from experienced professional photographers’ presentations and competition critiques. He also values the friendships he has made through NVPS meetings and events.
