DESCRIPTION:NVPS September 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn September we’re going to hone our street photography skills in Dupont Circle\, a lively\, busy part of DC.  We’ll find photo ops from the many restaurants\, storefronts\, and people out and about and heading to brunch.  We’ll also go down a few of the nearby residential streets for some architectural photography.  We’re going to go there on a Sunday to make parking easier to find and because street parking is free.When: \n\n\n\nSunday\, Sept. 10 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, Sept. 9 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (Rain date announced by Thursday\, Sept. 7th) \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nSince stealth is the name of the game\, a walk-around lens with good range (e.g. 24-120 or 28-300) or a small prime lens (50mm) is recommended.  Think light! SUMMARY:August 16\, 2023: Field Trips: Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:NVPS August 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Montgomery County Fair for a weekday field trip.  The fair is a lot of fun as it challenges the creativity and eye of the photographer.  There’s lots to photograph at the agriculture fair\, however\, our group this year will be focusing on the midway and rides after dark. \n\n\n\nIf you have the time\, spending the late afternoon strolling around the Upper Grounds and the Old MacDonald’s Barn (https://mcagfair.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023-Fair-Map-Letter-FINAL.pdf) can be rewarding.  You’ll find a photography exhibit\, old time agriculture machinery and general store\, flower and garden displays\, and a variety of demonstrations including chain saw sculpting.  You’ll also find the raptor tent where the local rescue organization will put on display several hawks and owls.  The racing pigs show will also be returning this year.  It always seems to bring out a smile and a few memorable images. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur group will meet just inside the main entrance about an hour before sunset.  After our usual socializing and planning\, we’ll split up and begin the hunt on the midway.  We’ll find carnival games\, concessions\, prizes\, and the colorful glitz that surrounds them.  We’ll also find fair attendees gorging on corn dogs\, cotton candy\, and popcorn\, playing games\, and enjoying the thrills of the rides.  The Grandstand will also be showing monster trucks at their show starting at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nTripods are essential for after dark photography.  Find spots that are not heavy in pedestrian traffic to avoid patrons tripping over your gear.\n\n\n\nWide angle lenses (24-70mm) will work great\, but you will also want to bring something with just a little extra reach (70-200mm) for longer range candid photography.\n\n\n\nWear comfortable walking shoes.\n\n\n\nIf you plan to attend the agriculture fair\, be sure to remember the sunscreen and a hat.\n\n\n\nBring extra cash for drinks and snacks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 17\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nWe’ll meetup at 7pm just past the main gate and security check.  You’ll find our group hanging out next to the first concession stand straight ahead. \n\n\n\nParking and tickets: \n\n\n\nOnsite parking is $15 per car.  There should be plenty of parking\, but anticipate some heavy traffic.  Car-pooling is a good option. \n\n\n\nFree parking with shuttle bus is also available from the Odendhal Ave parking lot at Lakeforest Mall. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 online\, $15 at the gate. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: National Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take it slow as we tour the The United States National Arboretum for our August field trip.  This 446 acre park is impossible to cover in a single visit\, but it always has something to see if you slow down.  The park has landscapes\, wild flowers\, gardens\, museums\, and more.  You can walk the park\, hop from trail to trail in your car\, or stalk the scenery as you cruise the many winding roads of the park all from the comfort of your air conditioned car. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start our tour at the visitor’s center.  Ignoring the obvious signs of renovation and construction occurring around the building at this time\, the pond and nearby gardens across the street will offer plenty of opportunities for more intimate subjects.  Working South the landscape begins to open with unique framing and landscape opportunities.  You’ll have the option of taking the paved road along Ellipse Rd NE (East of the Columns) or the dirt path through the field to the Capitol Columns.  Both paths offer different compositions with either fields of grass or leading lines in the foreground.  We’ll stay and study the columns for more shots before returning to the visitor’s center.   \n\n\n\nWhen 10am approaches\, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum opens for more intimate views.  You can also return to your car and drive South\, past the Columns\, to the Fern Valley parking lot.  The Fern Valley (North of the parking lot) offers year round wildflower blossoms and the nearby Youth Garden (just before the parking lot) will have butterflies fluttering about in their butterfly garden. \n\n\n\nThe park is enormous.  Going inside the visitor’s center to interview the ranger on what to see should also be considered.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nBring your landscape and macro lenses.  A 12-24mm\, 24-70mm\, 70-200mm\, or macro lenses can all be used depending on your creativity as you stroll the park.  \n\n\n\nNever leave home without a polarizer.  Consider packing an ND filter as well if you don’t want people in your landscapes.\n\n\n\nTripods are welcome in the park with the obvious precautions.  Keep the tripod out of the gardens and don’t block narrow passages.\n\n\n\nThe weather will be hot and humid.  Bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and comfortable hiking shoes.  Benches litter the park and provide welcome resting spots.  The visitor’s center\, which opens at 8am has restrooms.  The gift shop across the street opens at 10am and also has restrooms.  Port-a-poties are available\, but they are few scattered throughout the park.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 12\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 13\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nThe park will not open gates until exactly 8am.  Take your time and find a parking spot near the entrance after the gates open and we’ll wait for you at the traffic circle in front of the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections: \n\n\n\n2400 R St NE\,  \n\n\n\nWashington\, DC 20002 \n\n\n\nIf you cannot join us for this field trip\, maybe our other offering this month to the Montgomery County Fair will better suit your schedule and or desires. \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023(If you need to contact the coordinators click on Board Contacts\, then click on the link next to field-trips.) \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz and Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Green Spring Gardens

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Upperville Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:With the exception of the American Civil War\, The Great War\, World War 2\, and the recent pandemic\, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show has been held every year under the oak trees of Grafton Farm since 1853.  Originally established to showcase and improve local breeding stock\, today’s longest running horse show in America is considerably bigger attracting over 20\,000 spectators and is one of the most prestigious in the country. \nOur June field trip will take us West on Route 50 to Upperville\, VA where on Sunday June 11\, 2023 we will attend the 170th Horses & Horsepower Car Show.  The day starts with a car show including antique roasters\, muscle cars\, and other cars that will satisfy the exotic motorist and photographer.  The car show\, however\, is only the tip of the iceberg because the afternoon events at the farms culminate in the racing horses around the grand prix track.  \nInclement weather may delay the events on the final day of the show.  With our club picnic and other events landing on the same weekend\, we do not have an alternate day scheduled.  If the weather turns sour\, we’ll send out a notice to cancel the field trip.  \nMore information about the show can be found online: \nhttps://wineandcountrylife.com/the-upperville-colt-horse-show/ https://www.upperville.com/ \nPlease be aware of the event’s photography policies. \n\n“The use of flash attachments is not permitted on horse paths\, in the paddock or during competition.”\n\nTickets: \nParking is free and so is the show.  Reserved seating is available for a price.  See https://upperville.com for more information. \nEquipment: \n\nBring a standard lens (24-70mm) as you walk about the grounds hunting for subjects.\nBring your super telephoto (300mm+) to catch the action around the grand prix. In addition to the Zoom presentation\, we will be having a picnic at Burke Lake Park on Saturday June 10th. We hope that you can join us for the picnic\, but please be on the lookout for an eBlast with the full picnic details and how to RSVP for it. \nWe are pleased to have Kristi Odom as the judge for the end of year competition. She has the most difficult task of selecting the top images from all of the images that were awarded a 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, or Honorable Mention throughout the year within each competition class and category. That is going to be quite the challenge after seeing so many impressive winning images this club year. \nBIO: \nKristi Odom is an internationally acclaimed photographer\, a Nikon Ambassador\, an associate fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers\, and a motivational speaker. With a background in sports\, concerts\, and wedding photography\, she now works solely on her biggest passion\, which is wildlife. A photographer and filmmaker\, her work focuses on connecting people emotionally to animals and celebrating those who have a connection to the natural world. While she is based in Denver\, Colorado\, she runs an adventure company with her husband\, taking photographers all around the world and providing guests with life-changing experiences while teaching advanced photo skills.  \nHer accolades include over 60 international photography awards including two Nature’s Best Photography awards\, which exhibited her images at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. DESCRIPTION:Patagonian Sunrise–at Lago Grey Hotel\nFred Krebs just returned from a 3 1/2 week Overseas Adventure Travel trip around Patagonia. This presentation will include images from across that remote\, diverse and incredibly beautiful region as well as a few from Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls (spectacular in its own right). \nFred joined NVPS in 2018 and is thankful for how much it has helped him improve his photographic skills. He generally takes away something from each meeting that he can use. Fred especially appreciates the Portfolio Projects and how much he learns from his participation. \nFred takes pictures of things that interest him (which frequently changes). Since retiring Fred and his wife have increased their travels and the photo opportunities have grown as well.  He loves travel photography but his pictures may include just about anything else. Recently\, he has become especially fascinated with black and white and hopes to improve in that area. \nFred purchased his first camera in 1975 shortly after coming to Washington\, DC for a new job.  The first paycheck paid the rent and with the second he bought an Olympus OM 1 (which he still has). While he has tried virtually every brand of camera from Canon to Sony\, Fred remains partial to Olympus and the mirrorless MFT system because of its relatively small size. However\, he took several of the photos in this presentation with his iPhone 13\, which has assumed an increasingly larger role in his photography. He subscribes to the saying\, “the best camera is the one you have with you”.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually) Birds - One Photo Per Species with David Kravitz
DESCRIPTION:Description: David took this invitation as a challenge to create enough acceptable photographs of birds to fill a 10-minute presentation without repeating species. The photographs were taken in the U.S.\, Costa Rica\, Ecuador (the Galapagos Islands)\, and Iceland \nBio: David Kravitz enjoyed Black and White photography (with his own darkroom) for 2-3 years around 1970\, but then life intervened and time for photography faded away. He always intended to return to photography when he retired\, which he did in June 2019. He researched local photography clubs and\, because he concluded that it would provide the best learning opportunities\, he joined NVPS – a decision he has never regretted. He considers himself a neophyte and is still open to almost all areas of photography. He devotes the most time to nature photography\, but also enjoys travel\, documentary\, street\, and sports photography.

DESCRIPTION:The second final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Denise Silva\, a frequent participant with NVPS. \nBIO: \nDenise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Revolutionary War Weekend at Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:It’s another British invasion.  This time it’s centered at Washington’s Mt. Vernon and it involves highly enthusiastic historical re-enactors instead of a rock band.  We’ll visit Mt. Vernon during their Revolutionary War Weekend.  This is a large event hosting hundreds of re-enactors and has become very popular.  Tickets will sell out well in advance.  \nWe’ll hope for the best possible weather as we plan to attend Saturday morning.  If you cannot secure Saturday tickets\, you may want to consider attending Sunday instead.  This is an awesome event for any history buff and photographer interested in portraits\, candids\, and historically accurate journalistic compositions.  There is so much to see and the cast are photo friendly.  \nThe schedule of events for the day is not published until the “generals” meet\, usually the morning of the event.  Camp life is demonstrated throughout the day and there is always something happening.  Use your eyes and ears to anticipate unique opportunities so you can be at the right place at the right time.  Troop inspection usually occurs around 10am in the morning and will be announced over the PA system.  Pick your side and stick with them.  In the past\, there have been two scheduled skirmishes\, one around 12pm and another around 2pm.  Skirmishes are dependent on the weather as they will be using real muskets and real gunpowder.  \nRemember\, most participants are photogenic and welcome the opportunity provided they’re not busy.  Approach with a smile and a curiosity and you may find yourself much smarter after the encounter.  The cast is very knowledgeable about their uniforms\, the unit they are a member of\, and their camp. \nWe’ll start our tour from the Ford Orientation Center (aka visitor’s center).  We’ll leave the visitor’s center and follow the path leading us towards the Continental Army encampment which is usually found on the lawn beyond the Bowling Green.  The British and Hessian camps are usually located on the back lawn (river side) behind the upper garden.  Families (yes\, actual wives and children) of the soldiers often accompany the re-enactors just like camp followers would have in the past and they even play their historical rolls as well. \nIt won’t take long for many of us to become separated\, engrossed in whatever catches our eye.  This is certainly anticipated though we encourage small groups while you tour.  We’ll wander around from tent to tent\, capture scenes and events\, and find groups of soldiers marching or otherwise preparing for the day.  \nOur groups will most likely react to events announced over the PA.  Everything is a short walk\, but you’re not going to see everything as some events overlap.  We recommend finding something and following the action for a while before moving on.  Some events like the skirmishes may require you to plan ahead and stake out a spot before the crowds overtake the venue.  Knowing the contour of the land\, a bit of luck\, and a hint about the planned skirmish will help you find the right spot. \nPlease be aware of Mt. Vernon’s code of conduct which includes their photography policy.  No flash photography indoors and tripods are prohibited despite the fact that events such as Mt. A standard lens (about 24-70mm) will cover most of the images you’ll capture walking around the camps.\nWeather permitting\, there will be multiple mock skirmishes with musket and cannon fire. For these events\, you will be required to stand behind roped off viewing areas. For this reason\, be sure to bring a telephoto lens.  A 200mm will give you a wide shot of the “battlefield”.  You will need at least a 300mm to isolate individuals.\nAlways bring a polarizer.\nNo flash photography is permitted in the mansion or galleries.\nTripods are also prohibited. You shouldn’t need your tripod anyways. Save yourself the weight and leave it at home.\nWeather is anticipated to be warm. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the afternoon sun. DESCRIPTION:TONE THEORY―The Principles of Tone \nDescription: You’ve seen them\, those images that make your jaw drop and leave you speechless.  They pull you in\, you are captivated by them\, and can’t stop looking at them.  They leave a plethora of emotions swirling around in your brain and you just can’t stop thinking about them.  But then\, you look through your portfolio and wonder\, “Why don’t my images have that same feeling?  Why doesn’t passion resonate in my photos?” The truth is that most people run toward color and over–saturation to try to achieve the same mood.  Color Theory is definitely powerful and knowing it can help you transform your images.  But there is something even more important that sets the stage for your colors―your tones!  In this presentation Blake is going to introduce you to his Tone Theories.  After this you will be able to look at an image and see almost immediately why it works or doesn’t based on tones alone. \nPhoto by Jeremy Ellsworth\nBio:  Blake Rudis is a 20–year retired USAF Combat Veteran and a classically trained artist who started as a painter.  Blake transitioned into printmaking and sculpture in which he received his BFA in Fine Art from the University of Delaware. His passion for art shifted when he finally decided to double down on his love for the American landscape.  In 2006 Blake took up photography\, but he incorporates his knowledge of aesthetics and color theory into his photography courses and is known for his acclaimed Photoshop® workflow.Blake is a self–published author and has worked as an independent photo educator for many software companies.   Some of his partnerships include Topaz Labs\, Plotagraph Pro\, and ON1. DESCRIPTION:In this presentation Rena will discuss her work in sports photography\, including what goes into making a good sports image\, and will tell the stories behind some of her images.  After the discussion portion of the presentation\, she will present a slide show of her images from a variety of sports. \nBio:  \nRena has been interested in photography since she received a film camera as a college graduation gift\, but was sidelined by the practice of law until she had time to take some photography courses in the 1990’s.  She then began experimenting with many types of photography\, including family portraits\, events\, red carpet\, sports\, fine art and most recently bird photography.  Rena is currently happiest capturing athletes and birds in motion but thoroughly enjoys all photography\, especially outdoors.  She joined NVPS in early 2020.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Street Photography with Phyllis Kimmel and Suzy McIntire
DESCRIPTION:Phyllis Kimmel and Suzy McIntire will share a combined Member’s Gallery focused on street photography around Washington DC and New York. Phyllis will share photos from local street fairs and festivals in Washington DC – both spontaneous and street portraits – along with some other local and NYC street photography. Suzy enjoys walking around the city\, noticing what people and animals are up to\, and capturing their sometimes unusual activities. \nBIO – Phyllis Kimmel \nPhyllis has loved photography for as long as she can remember and was thrilled with the Canon AE-1 she received as a Bat Mitzvah gift from her grandmother.  Eventually Phyllis went digital and shot with Canon DSLRs until\, in 2023\, she took the leap to a Fuji mirrorless camera. \nPhyllis combines her love of hiking and the outdoors with photography.  She spends her weekends camera in hand\, exploring trails\, mountains\, parks\, gardens\, and more.  She finds herself drawn to the beauty in the ordinary and focusing on capturing the smaller details around her.  Over the past six years\, Phyllis has been a volunteer photographer for a local non-profit\, Community of Hope\, and with that\, began aspiring to become more comfortable with people as subjects.  More recently\, she’s stepped even farther outside her comfort zone with street photography—a fun endeavor.  \nPhyllis has been a member of NVPS for the past nine years or so.  She received an Honorable Mention at the October 2022 Art League Patterns exhibit\, and in February 2023\, two of her photographs won first and second place in their categories of the Washington Gardener photo competition. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nBIO – Suzy McIntire \nWith her first Olympus film camera\, Suzy McIntire took all the photos for her 2002 garden book (An American Cutting Garden\, UVA Press). For many years at the Natural History Museum\, she photographed small fossils for researchers and the collections database.  Using a microscope\, scientific camera\, and software for “extended depth of field” (EDF) photos\, these were composites sometimes of as many as 25 pictures.  She once was asked to photograph what a museum visitor claimed was a fossil apple—this visitor planned to sell it to Apple for a million dollars to fund his retirement. (A paleontologist had to tell him it was not a fossil apple.)  \nIn 2012 Suzy won the Washington Post Humor Photo Contest for a photo of an outhouse on a dinosaur dig in Wyoming.  Tiring of documentary pictures\, she got a Fuji camera three years ago and found happiness in street photography and urban landscapes. This past month she was pleased to get a photo into the Exposed DC annual competition.  She has been an NVPS member since 2019\, unless it was 2018.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Nostalgia-Field Trips Before Covid with Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Willa will be just reminiscing.  Field trips are always fun and looking back at the pictures we took is fun too. \nBIO: \nWilla’s first job after college was as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, Her first summer there\, she had a choice of several summer projects—filing\, cleaning small animal cages or photographing wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools. She claimed to be able to do photography and brought home a camera and a light meter.   Bob taught her everything she needed to know over the following weekend and her work was published. Bob still claims to have taught her everything she knows.  \nWilla has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, and Santa Fe Workshop in Santa Fe\, NM.  She has also had extensive courses in Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. She has been a member of NVPS since 2004 and has learned a great deal from the members and speakers. She has held many positions and is currently coordinator for the solo shows at Beanetics. \nWilla won Photographer of the Year in Novice Monochrome in 2006\, Advanced Monochrome in 2009 and Color Print of the Year in 2008.  Willa has work on display at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and Falls Church Arts.  She has an image in the permanent collection of the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts. She has had several images published in the Northern Virginia Review and has won their Best in Visual Arts award twice\, and was also published in Elan Magazine\, as well as being in numerous juried shows.   Willa has had solo shows at 1st Stage\, the Stone Tower Gallery at Glen Echo and has had several shows at Beanetics Coffee Rosters in Annandale and has been a guest artist at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda.

DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER ***  to rain date of Sunday\, April 16\, 2023\, 10am to 1pm\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is our pleasure to introduce April’s field trip to the Hillwood Estate\, Museum\, and Gardens.  This is a rare destination for our club to explore.  The estate is huge and we may not cover it all in one visit\, but we’re certain you will end the day satisfied\, already planning your next visit. \nThe former owner\, Marjorie Merriweather Post maintained an extensive collection of orchids\, so a visit to the greenhouse to see the orchids and other flowers maintained by today’s horticulturists is sure to be impressive.  Spring will be well underway and the Japanese style garden will be amazing despite the fact that the cherry blossoms will have past their prime.  The Lunar Lawn will also draw in photographers with rows of flowers lining the perimeter.  Sculptures and various other subjects will be discovered while wandering around the French Parterre and Four Seasons garden.  \nThere is so much to see outdoors you may forget about the lavishly decorated mansion and museum.  Inside you can tour the mansion’s collection of Imperial-era Russian art.  You’ll also find exotic French furniture\, tapestries\, and paintings as you wander through the rooms of the mansion.  \nOn the day of our field trip\, we’ll start with the outdoors.  After we’ve paid our admission\, we’ll break into smaller groups and spread out to the various gardens to take advantage of the soft morning light.  At or about high noon\, we’ll gather around the Merriweather Cafe for a break.  They will have indoor dining as well as a to go menu which will allow us to eat and chat outside in the warm spring weather.  The light may be a bit harsh after our break so we recommend going indoors to snoop around for subjects. \nPlease be aware of Hillwood’s photographic policy linked below.  It states that tripods may only be used in the gardens\, and flashes\, reflectors\, etc. are prohibited. \nhttps://hillwoodmuseum.org/visit/plan-your-visit/photography-policy \nTickets: \nVisiting Hillwood requires paid admission.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online (https://secure.hillwoodmuseum.org/events) or in person.  Purchasing online ahead of time offers a small discount ($1). \nAdult: $18Senior: $15Child (6-18): $6 \nEquipment: \n\nMost subjects will not be too far away so a standard lens will suit for most compositions.\nConsider bringing a macro lens to capture some unique details in either the flowers or decorations.\nDon’t forget to bring a polarizer.\nAs mentioned in the photographic policy\, tripods are only allowed in the gardens. SUMMARY:Portfolio Project – Final Review\, Group 1 with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:The first final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit\, a frequent judge for NVPS Portfolio Projects. \nBrian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. While still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. \nWhen shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filmmaking\, his favorite subject turns to the human condition\, telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. While having his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic region. Brian is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on the topics of creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. \nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell terrier\, who really is not very helpful\, but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking\, and just enjoy paying attention to her.

Ms. Pottheiser’s list of commercial clients is a venerable Dream Team. She shoots regularly across the globe for the National Basketball Association\, United States Tennis Association\, JP Morgan Chase\, Walgreens\, Gillette\, and countless others. \nFor all of the allure of working with A-list celebs and world-renowned athletes\, Jen is most passionate about her non-profit work. She photographs regularly and also volunteers without her camera for multiple non-profits including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center\, Canine Companions for Independence and The Valerie Fund. DESCRIPTION:Program: \n\n\n\nMike Whalen\n\n\n\nIn this presentation Mike revisits his 13-day trip to Washington State in May 2022. Primary locations include Seattle\, Mount Rainier National Park and The Olympic Peninsula. The Pacific Northwest offers unique opportunities for photographers. \n\n\n\n(Images from the following locations are presented: views from the top of Seattle’s Space Needle; Chihuly Museum of Glass; architect\, Frank Gehry’s iconic building: The Museum of Pop Culture; two botanical gardens; Mt. Rainier; Hurricane Ridge; the Hoh Rainforest; views of Lake Crescent; the Ancient Groves on the Sol Duc River\, and several west coast beaches. Photos from other sites may also be included.) \n\n\n\nThe presentation has 2 parts: Part 1 is informational\, including factual descriptions and documentary photos. Part 2 provides a  slideshow of artistic and favorite photos with a musical background. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. His first camera was an entry level Canon DSLR. \n\n\n\nHe joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. \n\n\n\nHe also volunteers weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter\, and occasionally\, as an event photographer for charitable organizations such as the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \n\n\n\nJoining NVPS was a significant learning opportunity due to the many club activities and inspiration from talented members. \n\n\n\nHis photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel and abstract photography. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Staying Local with Tana Ebbole
DESCRIPTION:Tana has thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to explore and photograph what she calls “local” places. She feels there are many amazing national and state parks\, formal gardens\, museums\, architecture\, and interesting neighborhoods and towns nearby. One really does not need to travel far to experience  places to photograph\, and since neither she nor her husband are great travelers\, they feel fortunate to live in an area of the country that one does not have to go far to seen new and interesting sites.  Tana feels that NVPS members will recognize the locations in her slide show and hopes that what she has captured represents these sites through interesting and appealing photographs. \nBIO \nTana Ebbole\, an Arlington based photographer\, seeks interesting flowers\, landscapes\, and scenes to photograph\, finding that the solitude and peace of being outside in nature or working in her ad hoc studio help her to achieve total focus and a place of calm and peacefulness. She has been selected in several juried competitions\, and is a member of NVPS and the Art League’s Gallery 75.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): A Five Month Journey Around the US with Alan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:After months of planning and making reservations\, Alan and his wife Marty set off on April 25\, 2022\, for a 156-day journey around the U.S. in their 27-foot motorhome. The trip took in 25 states and many National Parks as well as other interesting places. They returned on September 27. Obviously\, Alan made photos.  Over 21\,000!  This presentation attempts to distill those 21\,000 images into a 10-minute Members Gallery. \nBIO \nA member of NVPS since 2012\, Alan has been involved in some way or other with photography for the past 60 years.  It began with a science teacher instructing him on the art of film developing.  At that time\, he was using a Kodak Brownie.  Veering off during his teen-age years to using an 8mm movie camera\, he returned to still photography during his college years and while working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper. \nAlan was supposed to call in a newspaper photographer for photos\, but she lived nearly 30 miles away\, so he opted to take photos himself.  At first\, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant\, crisp pictures.  But encouraged by a classmate and photographer\, Alan got a 35mm camera and access to the college’s darkroom\, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request.  \nAfter graduating from college\, Alan enlisted in the Navy\, becoming a Navy Journalist and later a Public Affairs Officer. \nHis high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR\, and that became Alan’s Holy Grail.  As a low-ranking Navy man\, Alan scraped up the money and bought his first true SLR — a Minolta SRT-101.  As he progressed up the Navy ranks\, he upgraded to a Minolta X700. \nFast forward to 2003.  Alan’s brother-in-law was getting married and Alan was the photographer.  An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100.   It was love at first click!  Since then\, Alan has had a D100\, D200\, D300\, D810\, and since November 2017\, a D850. \nRetired from the Navy in 1994 and retired from Civil Service in 2011\, Alan is happy to spend his time making images.  He loves photographing just about everything\, but really likes night scenes and landscapes. His photos have been used for greeting cards by non-profits\, used for proposals by environmental entities\, have been used by sports web sites\, have appeared in newspapers\, and even hang in a gas station. \nAlan says he loves being a member of NVPS.  He has gained some great friends\, enjoys the camaraderie\, and has learned something new nearly every meeting.

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Rosalie O'Donnell – Theme: “Creative Altered Reality”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Creative Altered Reality” within the past three (3) years \nCreative Altered Reality:  \nYour image may be of any subject matter and must obviously display a change in the natural order of things whether by color\, form\, shape or any combination of these three.  All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else.  Artwork or computer graphics generated by you may be incorporated if the original photographic content predominates.  Images may not be constructed entirely within a computer.  Hi-key\, low-key\, or High Dynamic Range (HDR) images without further changes are not considered. \nThe adjustments you make to an image should result in an “altered reality” and not simply the removal\, adjustment\, or replacement of an element.  You should be able to see immediately that the photograph has been creatively manipulated. \nIn-camera techniques can be employed and you can play with the myriad programs and plugins\, tools and techniques that are available to digital photographers and this competition will be the one place where anything goes as long as it is your original work.  Some examples might involve painting filters\, distortion\, abstracting your image\, applying a creative filter\, mirroring\, compositing\, etc.\, etc.  Get creative! \nFor Reference: NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \nThe judge for this competition is Rosalie O’Donnell. \nBIO \nRosalie O’Donnell graduated from American River College in Sacramento\, CA and the University of California at Berkeley with her BA in the Practice of Art.  She went on to do graduate work at the University of California at Davis where she earned her teaching credential in art and music. \nA painter and printmaker\, Rosalie has shown her monotypes and etchings in California and the Washington\, DC region as well as galleries through-out the U.S\, including The Art League in Alexandria\, VA\, Mattawoman Art Center\, the Ellipse Gallery\, Gallery West\, The World Bank\, the National Institute of Health\, Washington Printmakers and Touchstone Gallery\, Sedona Art Center and Phoenix Economic Development Council annual exhibits. \nO’Donnell moved to Sedona\, AZ in the fall of 2018 and continues to paint and create in a variety of media. She continues to jury exhibits\, advise artists\, and exhibit her own work through-out the country. \nO’Donnell previously worked at The Art League in Alexandria\, VA located in the historic Torpedo Factory Art Center where she was the Gallery Director and Development associate. Rosalie served on the City of Alexandria Art in Public Places Committee\, the statewide board of Year of the Women in the Arts\, and as a juror for many local and regional exhibits in the Washington\, D.C. area. Prior to working in Alexandria\, VA\, she worked at Sierra College in Rocklin\, CA\, as the Director of the Ridley Gallery\, instructor for the Gallery Operations class and in the Marketing and Public Relations department. She also was co-owner of a cooperative gallery in Folsom\, CA and worked at several private galleries in and around Sacramento\, CA. DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Brenda Wilson\, joined by Deb Rose\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for the second half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement. Self-analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. \nFinal reviews will be April 11 for the first group and May 16 for the second group.
