SUMMARY:Member's Forum: (In Person) AI and Photography with David L. Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Interested in the latest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it shaken up photography? David will present a 30\,000-foot view of AI and demonstrate current examples of AI that are currently in use in photography software editing programs.  He will demonstrate Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools and Luminar Neo’s newest AI tools\, GenErase\, SceneExpand\, and SceneSwap. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDavid Crooks\n\n\n\nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursues his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and faraway\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia\, to be closer to work. He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \n\n\n\nDavid is also the organizer of the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group which has over 2\,700 members and leads about four to five field trips a month. The Group also does a Photo-A-Day for the year and a monthly project. The goal is to take photos every day and post the best one to the Meetup site. This is a proven way to improve your photography. In 2021\, David wrote the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group Guide Book. It is available at Amazon in Kindle version for $9.99 and paperback for $15.99: https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB_Amazon There is a website that has a document called “Updates and Errata” and it can be found at: https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB. David is an affiliate of Skylum and has done a few of these live edit sessions for the Meetup Group. He has a discount code and affiliate links. He receives a small commission on the sale\, but this does not increase the price. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) - Orchids on Canvas with KieuLan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Kieulan Nguyen\n\n\n\nKieulan considers herself an avid photographer.  She loves to photograph macro\, landscape\, travel\, street and currently she is working on Light and Shadow project.   \n\n\n\nIn 2019 during Covid\, she took a workshop from Rosie Lalonde to learn how to take pictures of flowers and transform them into paintings using mixer brushes in Photoshop.  Since that day\, she has immersed herself learning more and more about this technique and lately  besides orchids she also paints dogs\, cats\, and birds.   \n\n\n\nFor the last 4 years\, Kieulan has been building up her portfolio of painting orchids.   These paintings are from pictures that were taken from many trips to Longwood Gardens\, US Botanical\, and local gardens near her house.  These images that she presents today are a small body of her work as she continues to look for more exotic orchids to add to her collection. \n\n\n\nPainting is just like mediation.   Seeing an ordinary picture and transforming it into a painting is something that Kieulan loves to do\, and she feels so rewarded after finishing one painting.  A sense of fulfillment that is.

SUMMARY:Competition (Zoom) with Judge Peggy Feerick - Theme: "Written Language"
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Written Language” within the last three (3) years \n\n\n\nThe image should include some element of a written language – using letters\, characters\, words\, or some portion thereof. All the world’s written languages are acceptable. Compositions can be created or found\, real or abstract – although the language elements must not be abstracted beyond recognition. The language elements must be photographed and not added in post-processing – no captions or layers of added text. \n\n\n\nWritten language is both impactful and beautiful. We can’t help but read it wherever it appears in public spaces – such as on street and shop signs\, as well as in our own spaces – such as on books\, handwritings\, keyboards\, labels\, etc. The more you look\, the more you will see. It draws the eye and may convey more than one meaning depending upon the setting.   \n\n\n\nWritten language can also be visually appealing in terms of its shapes\, patterns\, curves\, and lines\, independent of any linguistic meaning – the language elements that you include do not need to be “read” as text.  This is your chance to make the written language engaging in new ways! \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nPeggy Feerick has taught photography for over 40 years and is currently instructing classes for The Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program. She retired from George Mason University as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Photography in 2016\, with prior teaching at various institutions including the University of New Mexico\, Georgetown University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition\, she was the photo archivist and curator for the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art photographic collection from 1988 to 1994. \n\n\n\nShe has served as a lecturer\, moderator\, and conference panelist both locally and nationally. In 1998\, she co-authored an article on “Women in Photography” for The Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History. In 1993\, she curated “The Telling Image: Portrait Photographs from the Archives of American Art.” This exhibition was shown at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, DC\, and later traveled to New York City. \n\n\n\nFeerick ‘s work is mainly photographic in nature but at times includes the mediums of printmaking and sculpture. Her work is exhibited locally and nationally and represented in both private and public collections. Peggy has received several grants and awards\, including a residency at CREAR in Scotland and George Mason’s Mathy Award. She holds a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Photography and MA and MFA in Photography and Art History from the University of New Mexico. \n\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Photography and the Law with Jim Norman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on two topics of importance to photographers — an introduction to copyright and a discussion of limitations that can be placed on where and when you can take a photograph and the uses you can make of that photograph.    \n\n\n\nCopyright is controlled exclusively by Federal law and provides important protections — and limitations — to you as the creator of a photograph. You automatically own the copyright in a photograph you make for your own use (if you’re employed by someone else\, other factors come into play)\, but once you share a photograph\, things become more complicated.  In addition\, your rights and remedies change significantly if you take the time to file a copyright registration.  In some instances\, it may be worthwhile to take legal action against a party that has made unauthorized use of one if your images.  In addition to the more complicated remedies available in the past\, we now have a less complex\, and less expensive\, option — the Copyright Claims Board. We will also touch upon the “fair use” exceptions and the complications that can arise if you employ artificial intelligence to make or enhance an image.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLimitations of when and where you can take a photograph\, and how you can use it\, will vary considerably depending on circumstances. We’ll go over the factors you need to take into account and what your options are if someone tells you “you aren’t allowed” to make photos of a particular scene.  It can be complicated\, and often the best option is to use common sense and common courtesy\, regardless of what you have the “right” to do. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJim Norman is a long-time member of NVPS and other organizations with an interest in photography\, including being a Creator Member of the Copyright Alliance.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Photography as Conceptual Art with Cat Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Since its conception in 1839\, photography has experienced a continual shift in process and functionality. The evolution of the medium has brought us to our current shoreline of artistic definition where we not only can make stunning photographic art but also conceptualize ideas and convey meaning within photographs in unique ways.  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Cat Simmons will discuss conceptual aspects of photography and how the medium is rapidly evolving and redefining the way we think about photographs and the medium as a whole. As part of her discussion\, she will present her body of work Objet a || Unremembering in which she utilizes the materiality of the photograph alongside the use of language to alter the visual representation of past memory.  \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nCat Simmons\n\n\n\nCat Simmons is a Maryland native and an active member in the photo community. She began her photo career in 2012 at Montgomery College in Rockville. From there Cat went on to earn her MFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2021. Her photo interests span multiple genres\, but her favorites are studio portraiture and conceptual work. She has exhibited in several places including Montgomery College\, the Contact Photo Festival in Toronto\, Patch and Remington Gallery in Michigan\, and the United Nations Building when living abroad in Vienna\, Austria. She is a member of the Silver Water Collective\, an all female group of SCAD graduates who joined talents to create\, collaborate\, and inspire others in their own photographic practices. \n\n\n\nWhen Cat isn’t in the studio\, she is teaching. She teaches a variety of in-person and virtual classes for Praxis Gallery\, Salisbury University\, Frederick Community College\, and Santa Fe Workshops. Cat also is an active member and chair for the North Bethesda Camera Club\, is a liaison for NBCC’s highschool outreach program\, and volunteers with the Potomac Community Resources offering photo critique for teens and adults with developmental differences. He bought a Canon XT and has used Canon ever since. He is now shooting with a Canon R5 mirrorless.  \n\n\n\nHis focus is on landscape\, nature\, and night photography. He donates many of his images to iNaturist.org (currently 3\,200 images of 1\,400 unique species). He also allows the use of his images at National Wildlife Refuges where he volunteers. He teaches a course in An Introduction to Nature Photography. \n\n\n\n\nSnowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) launching froma barn roof in New Lowell\, Ontario\, Canada\,\n\n\n\nFemale Jaguar (Panthera onca) “Gisele” stalking in the Parque Nacional de Pantanal Matogrossense\, Porto Jefre\, Brazil.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Virtual): (Zoom) A Western Road Trip with Thu Huyhn
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThu Huyhn recently had a western road trip with her friends for seven days. Her trip began in the state of California. She went through four other states including Nevada\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, and Utah. The group then headed back to California. The slideshow includes pictures she took during this entire trip. There was about a 30-minute rest at the hotels every day on this busy schedule. It really was an unforgettable road trip! \n\n\n\nThu Huyhn\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nThu started learning photography in 2019. She simply wanted to improve her photography skills for her real estate business\, but it was then that she knew she had a passion for photography and became deeply immersed in it. She loves various types of photography\, including landscape\, portrait\, wildlife\, sports\, macro and street photography. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Zoom

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: (In-Person) Prints - People of Pleiku\, Vietnam with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Mother and Baby\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nI was an Army Captain stationed near Pleiku\, Vietnam from September 1970 to September 1971. My budding enthusiasm for photography was muted while there because of long workdays and the “Off Limits” designation of the city. I was able to do some photography during my official business travels but those images were captured mostly from the air and from vehicles transiting busy city streets. Pleiku’s status changed to “On Limits” in the spring of 1972\, and coupled with my maintenance battalion’s reduced workload related to US troop withdrawals\, I was able to spend a few hours in the city on scattered weekends until I departed for home. I usually parked my jeep on the edge of the marketplace and wandered around\, occasionally with another soldier/photography enthusiast. I was received with curiosity and frequent smiles from the people I encountered and was not hindered from raising the camera and pressing the shutter release. \n\n\n\nAlthough all my Vietnam photos lay dormant for decades\, I always intended to do a book or a show around the “People of Pleiku.”  An exhibit opportunity arose in 2013 at the Northern Virginia Community College Verizon Gallery and I matted and framed 30 images for the show. Now another decade has passed and I’m glad to have this opportunity to display them again for NVPS. I hope you find them interesting. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nWayne Guenther\n\n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions.   \n\n\n\nIn Vietnam Wayne shot with Nikon bodies and three lenses; 35mm\, 50mm\, and 135mm.  He processed most of his black and white film at the nearby Air Force Base photo lab\, and sent off the transparency film to the States. He saw the results on returning home.  Time was not friendly to Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides\, and the storage conditions were hardly archival. Some scans were done in the early 2000s and the others in 2013 and edited with the software of that time. \n\n\n\n\nCigarette Boy\n\n\n\nAnnoyed Fishmonger\n\n\n\nSad Eyed Girl\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at Dunn-Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training - (In-Person) Matting with Bob and Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:At this month’s Education and Training session\, Bob and Willa will present a how-to/hands-on matting seminar to help members prepare their images for print competition\, exhibits or for personal use.   \n\n\n\nAfter our brief demonstration\, there will be several workstations around the room where several experienced members will demonstrate how they cut mat using their equipment.   This is a hands-on session\, so bring a photo\, not larger than 8.5 x11 to mat.  We will have mat board and other materials required to practice on. \n\n\n\nIf you have a mat cutter\, bring it to follow along. \n\n\n\nAlso\, if you have a jump/flash drive bring it so we can share our spreadsheet for cutting dimensions. \n\n\n\nBob Friedman\n\n\n\nWilla Friedman\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBIOs: \n\n\n\nBob started his photography journey as a teenager with a darkroom in his parents’ basement which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when he and Willa bought their house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \n\n\n\nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools and where her images were published in a fourth-grade textbook. \n\n\n\nBob and Willa say that If selling a few photos makes them pros\, then they are pros. Otherwise they consider themselves advanced amateurs. They have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada. They have also had extensive courses in Photoshop. They have been members of NVPS for 17 years. \n\n\n\nWhile their subjects are varied\, Bob enjoys street photography and Willa looks for reflections everywhere. Both use a Fuji X-T5 with various lenses. \n\n\n\nTheir work is currently on display at the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria\, and they have had images published in the Northern Virginia Review and District Lines. They have had multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution and have prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area. \n\n\n\nTheir current job is retirement—while it doesn’t pay very well\, it’s a lot more fun than working. \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:August 16\, 2023: Field Trips: Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:NVPS August 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Montgomery County Fair for a weekday field trip.  The fair is a lot of fun as it challenges the creativity and eye of the photographer.  There’s lots to photograph at the agriculture fair\, however\, our group this year will be focusing on the midway and rides after dark. \n\n\n\nIf you have the time\, spending the late afternoon strolling around the Upper Grounds and the Old MacDonald’s Barn (https://mcagfair.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023-Fair-Map-Letter-FINAL.pdf) can be rewarding.  You’ll find a photography exhibit\, old time agriculture machinery and general store\, flower and garden displays\, and a variety of demonstrations including chain saw sculpting.  You’ll also find the raptor tent where the local rescue organization will put on display several hawks and owls.  The racing pigs show will also be returning this year.  It always seems to bring out a smile and a few memorable images. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur group will meet just inside the main entrance about an hour before sunset.  After our usual socializing and planning\, we’ll split up and begin the hunt on the midway.  We’ll find carnival games\, concessions\, prizes\, and the colorful glitz that surrounds them.  We’ll also find fair attendees gorging on corn dogs\, cotton candy\, and popcorn\, playing games\, and enjoying the thrills of the rides.  The Grandstand will also be showing monster trucks at their show starting at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nTripods are essential for after dark photography.  Find spots that are not heavy in pedestrian traffic to avoid patrons tripping over your gear.\n\n\n\nWide angle lenses (24-70mm) will work great\, but you will also want to bring something with just a little extra reach (70-200mm) for longer range candid photography.\n\n\n\nWear comfortable walking shoes.\n\n\n\nIf you plan to attend the agriculture fair\, be sure to remember the sunscreen and a hat.\n\n\n\nBring extra cash for drinks and snacks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 17\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nWe’ll meetup at 7pm just past the main gate and security check.  You’ll find our group hanging out next to the first concession stand straight ahead. \n\n\n\nParking and tickets: \n\n\n\nOnsite parking is $15 per car.  There should be plenty of parking\, but anticipate some heavy traffic.  Car-pooling is a good option. \n\n\n\nFree parking with shuttle bus is also available from the Odendhal Ave parking lot at Lakeforest Mall. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 online\, $15 at the gate. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: National Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take it slow as we tour the The United States National Arboretum for our August field trip.  This 446 acre park is impossible to cover in a single visit\, but it always has something to see if you slow down.  The park has landscapes\, wild flowers\, gardens\, museums\, and more.  You can walk the park\, hop from trail to trail in your car\, or stalk the scenery as you cruise the many winding roads of the park all from the comfort of your air conditioned car. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start our tour at the visitor’s center.  Ignoring the obvious signs of renovation and construction occurring around the building at this time\, the pond and nearby gardens across the street will offer plenty of opportunities for more intimate subjects.  Working South the landscape begins to open with unique framing and landscape opportunities.  You’ll have the option of taking the paved road along Ellipse Rd NE (East of the Columns) or the dirt path through the field to the Capitol Columns.  Both paths offer different compositions with either fields of grass or leading lines in the foreground.  We’ll stay and study the columns for more shots before returning to the visitor’s center.   \n\n\n\nWhen 10am approaches\, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum opens for more intimate views.  You can also return to your car and drive South\, past the Columns\, to the Fern Valley parking lot.  The Fern Valley (North of the parking lot) offers year round wildflower blossoms and the nearby Youth Garden (just before the parking lot) will have butterflies fluttering about in their butterfly garden. \n\n\n\nThe park is enormous.  Going inside the visitor’s center to interview the ranger on what to see should also be considered.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nBring your landscape and macro lenses.  A 12-24mm\, 24-70mm\, 70-200mm\, or macro lenses can all be used depending on your creativity as you stroll the park.  \n\n\n\nNever leave home without a polarizer.  Consider packing an ND filter as well if you don’t want people in your landscapes.\n\n\n\nTripods are welcome in the park with the obvious precautions.  Keep the tripod out of the gardens and don’t block narrow passages.\n\n\n\nThe weather will be hot and humid.  Bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and comfortable hiking shoes.  Benches litter the park and provide welcome resting spots.  The visitor’s center\, which opens at 8am has restrooms.  The gift shop across the street opens at 10am and also has restrooms.  Port-a-poties are available\, but they are few scattered throughout the park.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 12\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 13\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nThe park will not open gates until exactly 8am.  Take your time and find a parking spot near the entrance after the gates open and we’ll wait for you at the traffic circle in front of the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections: \n\n\n\n2400 R St NE\,  \n\n\n\nWashington\, DC 20002 \n\n\n\nIf you cannot join us for this field trip\, maybe our other offering this month to the Montgomery County Fair will better suit your schedule and or desires. \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023(If you need to contact the coordinators click on Board Contacts\, then click on the link next to field-trips.) \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz and Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Green Spring Gardens
DESCRIPTION:In July we’re heading to a club favorite\, Green Spring Gardens.  In the gardens on the main level the flowers should be in bloom and plentiful\, and on the lower level there should be beautiful lotuses in bloom at the pond.  It may be a little early for the hummingbirds which appear every summer\, but there are other birds to photograph in the gardens as well as butterflies\, bees and dragonflies on the flowers.  And there are always people enjoying the gardens who make for good subjects.  \nWhere: \nGreen Spring Gardens4603 Green Spring Rd.Alexandria\, VA \nPlease note that while the grounds are open from dawn to dusk\, the gate to the parking lot should be down and the parking lot closed when we arrive.  There are two options for parking: (1) in the parking spaces on Witch Hazel Road (accessed from Braddock Rd.) leading to the parking lot\, before you get to the closed gate; and (2) on Green Spring Road (accessed from Little River Turnpike) across from the Salvation Army.  Parking is permitted there where noted from 7 a.m. on.                  \nhttps://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/green-spring/hours \nWhen: Saturday\, July 8\, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. (Rain date: Sunday\, July 9\, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) \nEquipment: \n\nFor the flora\, lenses in the 24-70 range and macro lenses will work well.  If you have a Lensbaby you may want to bring that for a dreamy effect\nTripods are helpful and permitted but not necessary\nFor bird photography\, bring the longest lens you have\n\nNotes: \nWe will meet at the gazebo on the main level\, i.e. the level with the parking lot\, at 7:30 a.m. \nSunrise on July 8 will be at 5:49 a.m.  If you want to start shooting before the meetup time you can return to the gazebo at 7:30 a.m. or look for us in the park. If you arrive late and there is no one at the gazebo\, you should be able to find us: it’s a small park.    \nThe visitor center\, which has restrooms\, will open at 9 a.m.  \nWe hope you can join us! Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n(Photographs by Steven Glintz)

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Upperville Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:With the exception of the American Civil War\, The Great War\, World War 2\, and the recent pandemic\, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show has been held every year under the oak trees of Grafton Farm since 1853.  Originally established to showcase and improve local breeding stock\, today’s longest running horse show in America is considerably bigger attracting over 20\,000 spectators and is one of the most prestigious in the country. \nOur June field trip will take us West on Route 50 to Upperville\, VA where on Sunday June 11\, 2023 we will attend the 170th Horses & Horsepower Car Show.  The day starts with a car show including antique roasters\, muscle cars\, and other cars that will satisfy the exotic motorist and photographer.  The car show\, however\, is only the tip of the iceberg because the afternoon events at the farms culminate in the racing horses around the grand prix track.  \nInclement weather may delay the events on the final day of the show.  With our club picnic and other events landing on the same weekend\, we do not have an alternate day scheduled.  If the weather turns sour\, we’ll send out a notice to cancel the field trip.  \nMore information about the show can be found online: \nhttps://wineandcountrylife.com/the-upperville-colt-horse-show/ https://www.upperville.com/ \nPlease be aware of the event’s photography policies. \n\n“The use of flash attachments is not permitted on horse paths\, in the paddock or during competition.”\n\nTickets: \nParking is free and so is the show.  Reserved seating is available for a price.  See https://upperville.com for more information. \nEquipment: \n\nBring a standard lens (24-70mm) as you walk about the grounds hunting for subjects.\nBring your super telephoto (300mm+) to catch the action around the grand prix. A 200mm will get you shots\, but you may find cropping later to get that little extra zoom.\nNever leave home without a polarizer.\nNo flash photography is permitted at the horse show.\nWeather will be warm and there aren’t enough trees to shade you from the afternoon sun. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself. Food trucks and tents will be onsite to accept your money.  Porta-potties will also be available.\n\nWhen: \nSunday\, June 11\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (no rain day) \nWhere: \nReferring to the Upperville Colt & Horse Show Grounds Map\, we’ll meet near Gate 2 across Rt.50 from the main parking area.  \nhttps://goo.gl/maps/dNiw418wBBz3P21PA(38.988583\, -77.856111) \nDirections: \n8300 John S Mosby Hwy.Upperville\, VA 20184 \nReferring to the Upperville Colt & Horse Show Grounds Map\, general admission is through Gate 4. \nCOVID precautions: \nThis is an outdoor event that is heavily attended.  We’re anticipating a low exposure risk given the time of year and outdoor activity. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n*Photographs courtesy of Stan Bysshe

SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition and Awards (Virtual) with Judge Kristi Odom
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our very last meeting of the 2022 – 2023 season\, NVPS End-of-Year Awards Night! We will have the full program of awards presented via Zoom this evening. In addition to the Zoom presentation\, we will be having a picnic at Burke Lake Park on Saturday June 10th. We hope that you can join us for the picnic\, but please be on the lookout for an eBlast with the full picnic details and how to RSVP for it. \nWe are pleased to have Kristi Odom as the judge for the end of year competition. She has the most difficult task of selecting the top images from all of the images that were awarded a 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, or Honorable Mention throughout the year within each competition class and category. That is going to be quite the challenge after seeing so many impressive winning images this club year. \nBIO: \nKristi Odom is an internationally acclaimed photographer\, a Nikon Ambassador\, an associate fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers\, and a motivational speaker. With a background in sports\, concerts\, and wedding photography\, she now works solely on her biggest passion\, which is wildlife. A photographer and filmmaker\, her work focuses on connecting people emotionally to animals and celebrating those who have a connection to the natural world. While she is based in Denver\, Colorado\, she runs an adventure company with her husband\, taking photographers all around the world and providing guests with life-changing experiences while teaching advanced photo skills.  \nHer accolades include over 60 international photography awards including two Nature’s Best Photography awards\, which exhibited her images at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Her work has appeared either online and/or in print for the following clients: National Geographic\, Nikon\, Forbes\, Rollingstone\, Microsoft\, and Outside Magazine. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Practical Tips for Your Photography Travels with Jim Norman
DESCRIPTION:Description:  Jim will share lessons he’s learned in planning his photography trips and hauling photography equipment all over the world by land\, sea\, and air. Much of this amounts to common sense\, but can be easily overlooked\, some will be less obvious\, and some reflect hard–won experience. Taken together\, these tips and recommendations can help make your photography trips less stressful\, more productive\, and more fun. A handout will provide links to useful references where you can follow up on important recommendations. \nBio:  Jim Norman is a long–time member of NVPS\, as well as a member other organizations that have interests relating to photography―the North American Nature Photography Association\, Professional Photographers of America\, the Loudoun Photo Club\, the Alaska Society of Outdoor and Nature Photographers (Professional Member)\, the Loudoun Arts Council (Professional Member)\, National Wildlife Federation (Life Member)\, and the Copyright Alliance (Creator Member). He enjoys nature and travel photography\, particularly when friends are involved\, and occasionally experiments with other genres.
