SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: (In-Person) A (Virtual) Tour of Dubai and World Expo 2020 with Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:The Gathering\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther’s Member’s Gallery will include images taken in February 2022 in Dubai\, UAE―a city of amazing architecture\, ports\, beaches\, and a world hub of finance and trade. Dubai hosted the World Expo from fall 2021 to spring 2022 (planned for 2020 but delayed by the pandemic). It was a jaw-dropping event with innovative pavilions\, programs and people\, and a smorgasbord of photographic opportunities. \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer who loves the process of photography from the capture to post-processing. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects including landscapes\, abstracts\, colors\, nature\, wildlife\, and people\, but she is particularly drawn to architectural abstracts. \n\n\n\nJudy is currently the editor of the NVPS newsletter FotoFax\, and a member of the Art League in Alexandria\, the Maryland Federation of Art\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Collective. Her work has been juried into shows across the country\, published in various journals\, and received awards including grand prize in The Washington Post 2022 Travel Photography Contest.   \n\n\n\n\nReflection\n\n\n\nDubai Harbor\n\n\n\nBlue Abstract\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery ( In Person) What's On My Walls with Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:BIO: \n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 when she started exploring ways to be creative and engaged after retirement. She has been primarily involved with the Portfolio Project and is currently the club president for 2023-2024. \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nGinger has been collecting the art of other people for her entire adult life. But that doesn’t mean she has ignored her own photographic art.  \n\n\n\nSometimes an image just calls out to her\, but very often the images that find a home on her walls are those she has entered into competition or those from shows. It is a pleasure for Ginger to be reminded of memories from past trips and interesting projects.  \n\n\n\nAnother good aspect of displaying her photography is that she has daily reminders that perhaps she could go back and improve on her previous results. \n\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

SUMMARY:Field Trips - National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:The National Gallery of Art provides a wonderful backdrop for capturing some unique images.  Let’s get inspired from our visit where we’ll immerse ourselves in over 150\,000 pieces of art while making some of our own. Though this field trip is not guaranteed to make you famous from the art you create\, it is guaranteed to entertain you on what might otherwise be a boring winter day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBesides the art exhibits\, you will find lots of interesting subjects including architecture\, lines\, colors\, shapes\, and street photo ops of people admiring the art in the East Building. Unlike the modern architecture of the East Building\, the West Building’s neoclassical architecture provides a more traditional layout including two garden courts\, a rotunda\, and expansive hallways connecting them. While some museums are extremely difficult to work in\, the National Gallery of Art offers a lot more space to spread out. That openness should make it easier to compose images to tell your story without annoying distractions. \n\n\n\nIf the weather is comfortably cool or the sun is just too nice to ignore\, consider a visit to the Sculpture Garden which lies further West of the West Building. The outdoor exhibit opens at 11am\, and in the winter\, the Smithsonian drains the fountain in the center and converts it to an ice rink (weather permitting). Also outside and between the East and West Buildings you will find a cobblestone plaza with pyramidal skylights and a sunken fountain.  \n\n\n\nMore information about the gallery’s current exhibits is available on their website: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/current.html

SUMMARY:Competition(Zoom) with Judge Angie McMonigal – Theme: “Natural Sand”
DESCRIPTION:Natural Sand: \n\n\n\nThe image must include natural sand. Natural sand is a granular material composed of finely divided rock or mineral particles\, such as silicates and volcanic minerals\, as well as coral and biogenic sands – these result in sands that are white\, yellow\, tan\, pink\, green\, black\, and other colors. \n\n\n\nSand can’t help but play with wind and water to make beautiful and interesting designs. Sand is also a basic landscape material that might escape notice.  From the sand dunes on a wind-swept beach to desert sands\, sand castles\, meditation gardens\, local parks\, children’s playgrounds\, and sports fields\, the possibilities are all around us. \n\n\n\nCompositions can be created or found\, real or abstract. You may come across natural sand and human-made creations in both obvious places and places you may not consider until you start to look and pay attention. And feel free to create your own composition with sand as a major element!  \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAngie is a fine art and commercial architecture photographer based in Chicago striving to bring a detailed\, thoughtful perspective to her work\, whether for clients or through the workshops she leads. Having grown up surrounded by nature yet fascinated by the big city she’s called home for more than two decades; she brings the meditative calm of her upbringing to a terrain that’s always transforming. Drawing from her education in the micro sciences (molecular biology\, microbiology\, virology) her focus is more frequently on bold architectural details rather than sweeping cityscapes\, creating images that celebrate those unexpectedly iconic elements hiding in plain sight.  \n\n\n\nYou can find her work published and exhibited both nationally and internationally. She frequently works with art consultants\, designers\, brands\, architectural firms\, and private collectors creating images that draw out the organic interplay between design\, structure\, environment\, and society. You can see her work here – www.angiemcmonigal.com \n\n\n\nWorkshops: \n\n\n\nAngie’s mission is to help creative-minded photographers explore the world of architectural photography. Through blog posts\, eBooks\, newsletters\, photowalks\, and workshops\, she aims to provide hands-on\, practical\, and creative training. You’ll be able to improve your entire creative process from shooting to post-processing. For more information visit her here – www.angiemcmonigal.com/workshops

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (Zoom) "How's Your Storage?" with Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS since 2010-2011. He has served on multiple Board positions and is a past President. For the last ten years he has helped with photo workshops in Washington State\, New Mexico\, Alaska and Montana. He has also contributed to the Smithsonian North American Songbird project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter 30 years of film photography\, Stan jumped into the digital world in 2007. This past summer the company whose image storage system he relied upon for ten years and that housed over 800\,000 images\, went bankrupt. He had a dead box of images. This lead to relearning the new world of image storage. It was at about this same time that Jim asked Stan to present at E&T. It seemed that the topic of image storage and security had not come up at NVPS. While we all pay close attention to any new camera\, lens and processing technology\, how we protect our art perhaps gets less consideration.

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Abstract Architecture Photography: Creativity in Composition with Angie McMonigal
DESCRIPTION:Join Angie for a discussion focusing on creative approaches to architectural subjects. Emphasis will be on architectural details and creating abstracts of the built environment. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Cyclocross
DESCRIPTION:Do you like action photography?  Have you wanted to try outdoor sports photography?  Would you like to have fun in the process?  In December we’re going to a free local cyclocross event known as the Capital ‘Cross Classic where you’ll have the opportunity to photograph cyclists up close and personal as they race on pavement\, on grass\, up and down hills and even carry their bikes over hurdles!  While this is a sporting event\, it is high-energy and very spirited: some riders wear costumes\, food and drink is handed out to the riders and some years there is live music. There is also a lot of cheering. It takes place in Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.  This is an all-day event (usually 8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) but we will go to the afternoon races\, which culminate in the exciting elite men’s race at 3:00 p.m. The event is held rain or shine (or snow) and if it rains or has recently rained the course and riders get muddy\, making for dramatic photos.    \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, Dec. 3 from 12:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.   \n\n\n\nThere is no rain date for this event since it will take place in the event of inclement weather.   \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n\nBoth short and long lenses have a place when shooting cyclocross\, so a walk-around lens with good range (e.g. 24-120 or 28-300) is the easiest lens to take.  However\, since the action is fast\, better glass will make for better images\, so a combination 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 would also work well.  Flash is often used to freeze the action and does not disturb the riders.  We suggest leaving tripods and monopods at home since there is a lot of walking the course\, some walking in tight spaces and moving around to get the right angle.\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those who can’t or don’t want to walk up hills or on uneven surfaces\, there is a flat area of the course that will also have good photo ops\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is free parking in the lot for the park and there is good turnover in spaces since some riders leave after their early races and others come in the afternoon for their later races. \n\n\n\n\n\nThere are restrooms at the park and there are usually one or two food trucks there for this event\n\n\n\n\n\nFeel free to go earlier and meet us at 12:15 p.m.  Races usually start at 8:00 a.m. and there is usually a race for kids under 9 years old at noon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe race schedule for this year has not yet come out but is expected to be the same as in years past.  If there are any changes in the schedule and therefore a change in the field trip time we will notify you well before the field trip\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nLake Fairfax Park \n\n\n\n1400 Lake Fairfax Drive \n\n\n\nReston\, VA \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 12:15 p.m. in front of the park office (which will be closed)\, which is the larger of the two structures in the park and located between the parking lot and the grassy part of the course.  \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024

SUMMARY:Member's Forum: (In Person) AI and Photography with David L. Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Interested in the latest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it shaken up photography? David will present a 30\,000-foot view of AI and demonstrate current examples of AI that are currently in use in photography software editing programs.  He will demonstrate Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools and Luminar Neo’s newest AI tools\, GenErase\, SceneExpand\, and SceneSwap. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDavid Crooks\n\n\n\nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursues his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and faraway\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia\, to be closer to work. He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \n\n\n\nDavid is also the organizer of the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group which has over 2\,700 members and leads about four to five field trips a month. The Group also does a Photo-A-Day for the year and a monthly project. The goal is to take photos every day and post the best one to the Meetup site. This is a proven way to improve your photography. In 2021\, David wrote the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group Guide Book. It is available at Amazon in Kindle version for $9.99 and paperback for $15.99: https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB_Amazon There is a website that has a document called “Updates and Errata” and it can be found at: https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) - Orchids on Canvas with KieuLan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Kieulan Nguyen\n\n\n\nKieulan considers herself an avid photographer.  She loves to photograph macro\, landscape\, travel\, street and currently she is working on Light and Shadow project.   \n\n\n\nIn 2019 during Covid\, she took a workshop from Rosie Lalonde to learn how to take pictures of flowers and transform them into paintings using mixer brushes in Photoshop.  Since that day\, she has immersed herself learning more and more about this technique and lately  besides orchids she also paints dogs\, cats\, and birds.   \n\n\n\nFor the last 4 years\, Kieulan has been building up her portfolio of painting orchids.   These paintings are from pictures that were taken from many trips to Longwood Gardens\, US Botanical\, and local gardens near her house.  These images that she presents today are a small body of her work as she continues to look for more exotic orchids to add to her collection. \n\n\n\nPainting is just like mediation.   Seeing an ordinary picture and transforming it into a painting is something that Kieulan loves to do\, and she feels so rewarded after finishing one painting.  A sense of fulfillment that is.

SUMMARY:Competition (Zoom) with Judge Peggy Feerick - Theme: "Written Language"
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Written Language” within the last three (3) years \n\n\n\nThe image should include some element of a written language – using letters\, characters\, words\, or some portion thereof. All the world’s written languages are acceptable. Compositions can be created or found\, real or abstract – although the language elements must not be abstracted beyond recognition. The language elements must be photographed and not added in post-processing – no captions or layers of added text. \n\n\n\nWritten language is both impactful and beautiful. We can’t help but read it wherever it appears in public spaces – such as on street and shop signs\, as well as in our own spaces – such as on books\, handwritings\, keyboards\, labels\, etc. The more you look\, the more you will see. It draws the eye and may convey more than one meaning depending upon the setting.   \n\n\n\nWritten language can also be visually appealing in terms of its shapes\, patterns\, curves\, and lines\, independent of any linguistic meaning – the language elements that you include do not need to be “read” as text.  This is your chance to make the written language engaging in new ways! \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nPeggy Feerick has taught photography for over 40 years and is currently instructing classes for The Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program. She retired from George Mason University as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Photography in 2016\, with prior teaching at various institutions including the University of New Mexico\, Georgetown University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition\, she was the photo archivist and curator for the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art photographic collection from 1988 to 1994. \n\n\n\nShe has served as a lecturer\, moderator\, and conference panelist both locally and nationally. In 1998\, she co-authored an article on “Women in Photography” for The Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History. In 1993\, she curated “The Telling Image: Portrait Photographs from the Archives of American Art.” This exhibition was shown at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, DC\, and later traveled to New York City. \n\n\n\nFeerick ‘s work is mainly photographic in nature but at times includes the mediums of printmaking and sculpture. Her work is exhibited locally and nationally and represented in both private and public collections. Peggy has received several grants and awards\, including a residency at CREAR in Scotland and George Mason’s Mathy Award. She holds a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Photography and MA and MFA in Photography and Art History from the University of New Mexico. \n\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Photography and the Law with Jim Norman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on two topics of importance to photographers — an introduction to copyright and a discussion of limitations that can be placed on where and when you can take a photograph and the uses you can make of that photograph.    \n\n\n\nCopyright is controlled exclusively by Federal law and provides important protections — and limitations — to you as the creator of a photograph. You automatically own the copyright in a photograph you make for your own use (if you’re employed by someone else\, other factors come into play)\, but once you share a photograph\, things become more complicated.  In addition\, your rights and remedies change significantly if you take the time to file a copyright registration.  In some instances\, it may be worthwhile to take legal action against a party that has made unauthorized use of one if your images.  In addition to the more complicated remedies available in the past\, we now have a less complex\, and less expensive\, option — the Copyright Claims Board. We will also touch upon the “fair use” exceptions and the complications that can arise if you employ artificial intelligence to make or enhance an image.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLimitations of when and where you can take a photograph\, and how you can use it\, will vary considerably depending on circumstances. We’ll go over the factors you need to take into account and what your options are if someone tells you “you aren’t allowed” to make photos of a particular scene.  It can be complicated\, and often the best option is to use common sense and common courtesy\, regardless of what you have the “right” to do. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJim Norman is a long-time member of NVPS and other organizations with an interest in photography\, including being a Creator Member of the Copyright Alliance.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Photography as Conceptual Art with Cat Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Since its conception in 1839\, photography has experienced a continual shift in process and functionality. The evolution of the medium has brought us to our current shoreline of artistic definition where we not only can make stunning photographic art but also conceptualize ideas and convey meaning within photographs in unique ways.  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Cat Simmons will discuss conceptual aspects of photography and how the medium is rapidly evolving and redefining the way we think about photographs and the medium as a whole. As part of her discussion\, she will present her body of work Objet a || Unremembering in which she utilizes the materiality of the photograph alongside the use of language to alter the visual representation of past memory.  \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nCat Simmons\n\n\n\nCat Simmons is a Maryland native and an active member in the photo community. She began her photo career in 2012 at Montgomery College in Rockville. From there Cat went on to earn her MFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2021. Her photo interests span multiple genres\, but her favorites are studio portraiture and conceptual work. She has exhibited in several places including Montgomery College\, the Contact Photo Festival in Toronto\, Patch and Remington Gallery in Michigan\, and the United Nations Building when living abroad in Vienna\, Austria. She is a member of the Silver Water Collective\, an all female group of SCAD graduates who joined talents to create\, collaborate\, and inspire others in their own photographic practices. \n\n\n\nWhen Cat isn’t in the studio\, she is teaching. She teaches a variety of in-person and virtual classes for Praxis Gallery\, Salisbury University\, Frederick Community College\, and Santa Fe Workshops. Cat also is an active member and chair for the North Bethesda Camera Club\, is a liaison for NBCC’s highschool outreach program\, and volunteers with the Potomac Community Resources offering photo critique for teens and adults with developmental differences. SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: (In-Person) Prints - People of Pleiku\, Vietnam with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Mother and Baby\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nI was an Army Captain stationed near Pleiku\, Vietnam from September 1970 to September 1971. My budding enthusiasm for photography was muted while there because of long workdays and the “Off Limits” designation of the city. I was able to do some photography during my official business travels but those images were captured mostly from the air and from vehicles transiting busy city streets. Pleiku’s status changed to “On Limits” in the spring of 1972\, and coupled with my maintenance battalion’s reduced workload related to US troop withdrawals\, I was able to spend a few hours in the city on scattered weekends until I departed for home. I usually parked my jeep on the edge of the marketplace and wandered around\, occasionally with another soldier/photography enthusiast. I was received with curiosity and frequent smiles from the people I encountered and was not hindered from raising the camera and pressing the shutter release. \n\n\n\nAlthough all my Vietnam photos lay dormant for decades\, I always intended to do a book or a show around the “People of Pleiku.”  An exhibit opportunity arose in 2013 at the Northern Virginia Community College Verizon Gallery and I matted and framed 30 images for the show. Now another decade has passed and I’m glad to have this opportunity to display them again for NVPS. I hope you find them interesting. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nWayne Guenther\n\n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions.   \n\n\n\nIn Vietnam Wayne shot with Nikon bodies and three lenses; 35mm\, 50mm\, and 135mm.  He processed most of his black and white film at the nearby Air Force Base photo lab\, and sent off the transparency film to the States. He saw the results on returning home.  Time was not friendly to Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides\, and the storage conditions were hardly archival. Some scans were done in the early 2000s and the others in 2013 and edited with the software of that time. \n\n\n\n\nCigarette Boy\n\n\n\nAnnoyed Fishmonger\n\n\n\nSad Eyed Girl\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at Dunn-Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Education & Training - (In-Person) Matting with Bob and Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:At this month’s Education and Training session\, Bob and Willa will present a how-to/hands-on matting seminar to help members prepare their images for print competition\, exhibits or for personal use.   \n\n\n\nAfter our brief demonstration\, there will be several workstations around the room where several experienced members will demonstrate how they cut mat using their equipment.   This is a hands-on session\, so bring a photo\, not larger than 8.5 x11 to mat.  We will have mat board and other materials required to practice on. \n\n\n\nIf you have a mat cutter\, bring it to follow along. \n\n\n\nAlso\, if you have a jump/flash drive bring it so we can share our spreadsheet for cutting dimensions. \n\n\n\nBob Friedman\n\n\n\nWilla Friedman\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBIOs: \n\n\n\nBob started his photography journey as a teenager with a darkroom in his parents’ basement which he inherited from his brother. The first thing he did when he and Willa bought their house was to build a darkroom in the basement. \n\n\n\nWilla first became involved in photography as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York where she photographed wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools and where her images were published in a fourth-grade textbook. \n\n\n\nBob and Willa say that If selling a few photos makes them pros\, then they are pros. Otherwise they consider themselves advanced amateurs. They have taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada. They have also had extensive courses in Photoshop. They have been members of NVPS for 17 years. \n\n\n\nWhile their subjects are varied\, Bob enjoys street photography and Willa looks for reflections everywhere. Both use a Fuji X-T5 with various lenses. \n\n\n\nTheir work is currently on display at the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria\, and they have had images published in the Northern Virginia Review and District Lines. They have had multiple images in the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections at the Smithsonian Institution and have prints on display in various professional offices in the Metro DC area. \n\n\n\nTheir current job is retirement—while it doesn’t pay very well\, it’s a lot more fun than working. \n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse
