DESCRIPTION:I Am \n\n\n\nby Lidia Slominski \n\n\n\nI am a mother\, a wife\, a daughter\, \n\n\n\nDevoted to my Family. \n\n\n\nI am a speck of dust in the immensity \n\n\n\nof \n\n\n\nthe Universe. \n\n\n\nI am an artist\, a writer\, \n\n\n\nan Army professional\, loyal to my country. \n\n\n\nI am a name on an endless list. \n\n\n\nI am All\, and Nothing. \n\n\n\nI Am. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs an artist\, I am self-taught. Art is my way to express my views of the world around me without using words. I always loved taking photos; I feel inspired every time I look around\, whether alone\, with my family or at work\, by anything and everything.  I create stories around the photographs that I take. I look at them as life scenes and use them as inspiration for my paintings. When I create photograph series\, I sometimes tell the story in a poem. My first painting was inspired by my professional mentor calling me a “tall poppy “and by childhood memories. Creating my first painting inspired a series of photographs that feature poppies.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs far as showcasing my work\, I usually give my photographs or paintings as gifts to friends\, as a memento of a memory we share. However\, I have participated in a few events where I sold my art or raised funding for events. Most recently\, I was the featured artist of May 2023 at the Darbytown Art Studio in Fredericksburg. I also earned awards and various photography group recognitions\, such as Top Image of the Month with the NOVA Macro/Nature Photography VA – DC – MD\, January 2021 (run by Lori Lankford)\, Second Place\, two Honorable Mentions and a Merit Award at the 2022 Annual Fredericksburg Photography Show\, and most recently Second Place at the NVPS intermediate Color Monthly Competition of April 2024 (I joined NVPS in March 2024). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Window \n\n\n\nBy Lidia Slominski \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA dark gloomy room\,  \n\n\n\nPaint peeling off the walls. \n\n\n\nOpen doors\, of closets and cabinets. \n\n\n\nEmpty now…Bearing memories of things\, \n\n\n\nAnd the people that the things belonged to. \n\n\n\nA dirty\, worn-out rug across the floor\, \n\n\n\nWith stains of times past\, and a musty odor. \n\n\n\nAn empty\, abandoned room. \n\n\n\nIn an empty\, abandoned building. \n\n\n\nCold and dark. A sanitarium\, more precisely. \n\n\n\nSuddenly\, I feel the burden. \n\n\n\nA burden of many\, that now becomes mine… \n\n\n\nOverwhelming and distant at the same time. \n\n\n\nAnd then\, I see the light seeping through. \n\n\n\nComing through a window\, \n\n\n\nThat seems blocked by a brick wall. \n\n\n\nAs I walk past the door\, the light becomes brighter.  \n\n\n\nThe brick wall is fading\, and my soul feels lighter. \n\n\n\nA feeling of hope has taken over. \n\n\n\nAnd I can go on…

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person) – Prints: Dance and Architecture with Catherine Wang
DESCRIPTION:Dance and Architecture are two distinct yet profoundly interconnected subjects in photography\, each offering unique challenges and opportunities for creative expression. Capturing dance in photography involves freezing moments of fluid motion\, translating the grace\, power\, and emotion of the dance into a still image\, while Architectural photography focuses on capturing the design\, form\, and aesthetic of buildings and structures. It emphasizes lines\, shapes\, patterns\, and the relationship between different elements of the design. Can we find something in common between these two? Yes\, it’s “ART”\,  Both dance and architecture photography require a strong artistic vision. Photographers need to see beyond the obvious and capture unique perspectives that showcase their subjects in new and artistic ways. In my “Dance and Architecture” presentation\, I hope the audience will find the unique connection hidden behind the photos.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Wang is an International award-winning photographer based in DMV area (DC\, Maryland\, Virginia)\, specializing in still life\, architecture\, portrait and dance photography. Her work also exhibited in many countries\, such as UK\, Switzerland\, Japan etc.   \n\n\n\nWith 8 years of experience\, Catherine has developed a unique style that blends contemporary aesthetics with classic techniques.   \n\n\n\nCatherine’s journey into photography began in 2016\, when she got her first Nikon DSLR camera. Her skills took off in 2020 when COVID-19 started\, allowing her to work remotely and giving her more time to dive into photography. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines\, including Photo Vogue\, 1x.com etc.  \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not behind the camera\, Catherine enjoys reading\, teaching photography workshops and mentoring aspiring photographers. DESCRIPTION:Lisa Cuchara\, PhD\, OM SYSTEM Ambassador\, Master Craftsman (PPA)\, Master of Artistry (PPA)\, Master of Photography (PPA)\, HonNEC\, is very passionate about photography and enjoys both being behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. She loves to photograph nature but finds many subjects equally intriguing. She appreciates the world around her and embraces the challenge of interpreting what her eyes see\, and her heart feels\, via her photographs. \n\n\n\nLisa met her husband Tom through photography\, and they are both very active in many local\, national\, and international photography organizations. They have a photography studio for teaching photography as well as for portraits. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions\, their work has been accepted into numerous juried exhibitions\, and their images have won awards at the local\, state\, national\, and international levels. Their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life\, Wild Bird\, Birder’s World\, on calendar pages and covers\, and on the cover of a fictional paperback novel. They have published two books with Amherst Media— “Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things” which is about their HDR and light painted images and “The Frog Whisperer.” \n\n\n\nThey have presented a wide variety of motivational and instructional programs in person and via zoom to many photography groups/conventions. They also teach photography and post–processing and lead photo tours. SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) - Before You Print with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:The overwhelming volume of photographs these days are viewed digitally on a screen. You upload to social media yourself without much thought of file size (around 1000px) and resolution (72dpi) because it looks fine on the screen. If you want to print\, however\, you must consider many more things from capture to editing\, and matting and framing\, to create a digital file that will print beautifully for competition or decoration. This is a costly endeavor whether you print yourself or use a commercial service\, but the key to cost control is standardization. We will discuss how to select two or three image sizes that will scale to fit two or three standard mats and frames\, allowing for purchase of precut mats and backing\, glass\, and frame rails.  Once the event that required the print is over and if the piece is returned to you\, remove the print from the mat and reuse the mat/backing for the next requirement.  I will demonstrate how I place prints in mats and safely remove them later\, and a way to attach information about you and the print that can be removed without damaging the backing. Lastly\, I will talk about commercial printing service\, pros and cons of buying a printer\, and display different papers with the same printed image. \n\n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style. In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years and has placed in numerous NVPS monthly competitions.    \n\n\n\nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic. She has won the Kodak Gallery Award 14 times\, considered by some to be the “Oscar” of photography. SUMMARY:Field Trip:  The Montgomery County Fair

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Green Springs Gardens
DESCRIPTION:We’re returning to Green Spring Gardens for our field trip in early July. Green Spring Gardens offers so much with only a fraction of the crowds. The gardens around the gazebo and the winding paths between the parking lot and the lawn will be showing their blooms. In addition to the flowers\, you will also hopefully find birds\, butterflies\, bees\, dragonflies\, and maybe even a hummingbird or two. \n\n\n\nIn the far end of the park\, you will find several garden vignettes including a children’s garden. \n\n\n\nThe lower gardens is where you will find another gazebo and two ponds where you can capture water lilies and lotus flowers towering out of the water. This area is also home to great blue and green herons. These gardens are accessible from either a paved path leading down from the parking lot or the wooded stream valley path on the far end. \n\n\n\nPeople walking the park and otherwise enjoying nature will also provide for unique photographic opportunities around the park. \n\n\n\nMore information about the park and its events can be reviewed online\, https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/greenspring \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nGreen Spring Gardens \n\n\n\n4603 Green Spring Rd. \n\n\n\nAlexandria\, VA \n\n\n\nPlease note that while the grounds are open from dawn to dusk\, the gate to the parking lot will probably be closed when we arrive. There are two options for parking: (1) in the parking spaces on Witch Hazel Road (accessed from Braddock Rd.) leading to the parking lot; and (2) on Green Spring Road (accessed from Little River Turnpike) across from the Salvation Army. Parking is permitted there where noted from 7 a.m. on.                 \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, July 6\, 2024 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.  \n\n\n\n(Rain date: Sunday\, July 7\, 2024 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nFor the flora\, lenses in the 24-70 range and macro lenses will work well.  If you have a Lensbaby or other creative lenses\, bring them out for some fun and sun.\n\n\n\nDon’t forget your polarizer\n\n\n\nTripods are helpful and permitted but not necessary\n\n\n\nFor bird photography\, bring the longest lens you have\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNotes: \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the gazebo on the main level\, i.e.\, the level with the parking lot\, at 7:30 a.m. \n\n\n\nSunrise will be at 5:49 a.m.  If you want to start shooting before the meetup time you can return to the gazebo at 7:30 a.m. or look for us in the park.  If you arrive late and there is no one at the gazebo\, you should be able to find us:  it’s a small park. \n\n\n\nThe visitor center\, which has restrooms\, will open at 9 a.m. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Upperville Colt & Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:This event was so much fun last year that we’re doing it again!  Please join us in the beautiful Virginia countryside for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.  Established in 1853\, it is the oldest horse show in America. There are multiple areas of competition with beautiful horses and riders of all ages. In addition to the main attraction there are artisans and other vendors and great people-watching. And on Sunday there will be a car show with antique cars and muscle cars.  \n\n\n\nThere is pretty much something for everyone to photograph.  Food is available and there are outdoor tables at which to enjoy it. Tonight’s presentation was influenced by James Prochnik’s recent NVPS program titled Picturing Strangers: Facing Fears\, Finding Connections\, & Having Fun. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nKirk became interested in digital photography in 2012 when he joined NVPS. He has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including numerous photo sun creations on CBS Sunday Morning (2021 thru 2023)\, Annual Photography Award (APA)— Honorable Mention\, International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA)—Nominee Award\, Great American Country (GAC)—Hunt for Americana Photo Contest\, and NVPS monthly and end–of–year competition awards. She will discuss techniques and considerations to making a good street shot with examples and stories. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDebra was introduced to photography by a classmate while in college\, and was instantly hooked.  She is inspired by the endless possibilities when looking through the lens.  Raised in the vibrant backdrop of New York City and fueled by her passion for travel\, she delved into various photographic genres\, ranging from cityscapes\, landscapes\, architectural  and most recently\, street photography.  She discovered she has always been a street photographer at heart but never realized that until she digitized all her photos.  Debra enjoys exploring new genres of photography and honing her street photography skills. DESCRIPTION:We have a special event for everyone on May 28\, the last meeting of the year. Instead of one member displaying their prints (usually of a single theme and with uniform mats and/or frames)\, we invite all members to bring in up to four prints or photo projects prepared in any manner you’d like. We hope to see examples of all sizes\, decorative frame styles\, and prints on alternative materials like metal\, canvas\, acrylic\, and wood\, as well as work done for competition presentations. We’d also like to see examples of photo books and special projects like calendars\, photo cards\, mouse pads\, scarves\, and other gifts. \n\n\n\nInstructions:   Bring your printed items to the Firehouse before the meeting starts and lay them out on the tables in the back of the room at the direction of the helpers. They will assist in marking off your space and ask you to put your name on a Name Tent that will connect you to your displayed items. DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit\n\n\n\nThe second final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit\, a frequent reviewer for NVPS Portfolio Projects. \n\n\n\nBrian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. While still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. \n\n\n\nWhen shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filmmaking\, his favorite subject turns to the human condition\, telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. While having his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic region. Brian is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on the topics of creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. \n\n\n\nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell terrier\, who really is not very helpful\, but is always ready for a walk in the woods. SUMMARY:Field Trip - Fredericksburg
DESCRIPTION:Fredericksburg will be offering a wide variety of photographic opportunities on the day our visit.  We’ll start our trip with Cars and Coffee held at the Gari Melchers museum.  This is a free monthly event held on the second Saturday of each month between 8am and 10am where members of the community drive in and display their antique cars.  Admission to the Gari Melchers museum costs $12\, but you may find more subjects around the nearby grounds.  Stay as long as you like\, but consider joining us at our next stop. \n\n\n\nEven if cars aren’t your thing\, everyone is welcome to meet up a short drive away at Chatham Manor.  The Georgian-style mansion stands overlooking the Rappahannock River and the city of Fredericksburg. Even though the interior of the mansion is undergoing renovations\, the grounds of the former Union headquarters and field hospital offers today’s photographers plenty of colonial style gardens and exhibits. \n\n\n\nAs lunch approaches and if there is interest\, we can meetup in Old Town Fredericksburg for a bite to eat before heading home.  When visiting downtown\, you will find colorful storefronts and other historical hot spots including the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop\, the Rising Sun Tavern\, and the Mary Washington House and Gardens.  Each of these museums costs $10 to enter ($8 senior/military) individually or for $24 you can visit all of them.  Feel free to explore these resources on your own. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n* This field trip should offer lots of opportunities to capture subjects with a typical mid-range lens.  Bring a longer lens if you want to capture details in people or landscapes.  A macro lens may also be particularly useful in the gardens at Chatham Manor.* Flash\, tripods\, and monopods are permitted outdoors provided they stay out of the garden beds and do not present a danger to others.* Most or our walking will involve flat gravel and paved paths.  Wear comfortable walking shoes.* Restrooms are available starting at 9am in the Chatham Manor’s Visitor Center.* Parking in downtown Fredericksburg should cost no more than $8 if you decide to go. \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 from 8:30am – 11:30am(Rain date: Sunday\, May 12\, 2024 from 8:30am – 11:30am) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet at 8:30am outside the Visitor’s Center lot at Gari Melchers Home and Studio.  You can access the facility from Washington St. which intersects with the Southbound lanes of Warrenton Rd (US Rt.17 Business). \n\n\n\nDirections:Take 95-South to exit 133A\, US Route-17 Business / Warrenton Rd. DESCRIPTION:You’ve worked hard to develop your skills. You have all the right equipment. You’ve studied all the right things and mastered all the necessary software. You’ve spent countless hours behind the camera and in front of the computer\, so you have solid technique and you’re technically proficient. \n\n\n\nYou’ve definitely put in the time\, and you absolutely know what to do. And yet\, you find that you’re still asking yourself the same old questions: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– Why can’t I make the photographs I want to make?  \n\n\n\n– I want my photographs to reflect my own vision and style\, but I’m not even sure I can tell you what those things are. How do I figure that out? \n\n\n\n– I know these things exist and I know they’re important because I’ve seen them in the work of other photographers. But how do I get from here to there? \n\n\n\n – Have I been wasting my time learning the wrong things?                                                                                                     \n\n\n\n  – How will I ever get to where I want to be? \n\n\n\nIf that describes you\, you can relax a bit because you’re already 80 percent of the way there. The good news is that you don’t need to learn any new skills to get that last 20 percent. You already know everything you need to know. The bad news is that you’ve crossed the border and left the reservation. You’ve entered the wilderness and are now in the realm of The Artist. You’re on your own out here\, so you need a new plan because the old rules no longer apply. In fact\, there are no rules at all in this wilderness\, so photography education can no longer provide you with the answers you need. Fortunately\, there is a well-trodden path that can lead you forward. You can begin your journey on it by pondering these questions: \n\n\n\nHow do I stop working with the camera? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I begin creating through the camera? \n\n\n\nThere is a monumental difference between these two ways of seeing and working. If the only thing you see is what’s in front of you\, then that’s all you’ll ever be able to shoot. Truly seeing your work begins long before you point a camera at anything. It begins even before your visual system is engaged. This kind of seeing is an inner act that reaches outward\, and it allows you to consciously participate in the act of creation before it even begins. There is a way to do that. It’s simple\, but it’s not easy. You’ll also have to work at it\, but it’s more than worth the effort. I didn’t find my best work. It found me. It showed up after I worked out a practical way to bring my brain and my heart together. That was the key to unlocking it. DESCRIPTION:Gary\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for nearly 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens\, bathrooms\, and choosing paint colors.  He is presently involved in commercial real estate investment. \n\n\n\nHe started taking photographs of his daughter’s sporting events about 12 years ago\, and discovered that post-processing the images provided a welcome creative outlet.  Then and today\, he has never stopped being an ardent student of Photoshop.  Its potential never ceases to amaze.  \n\n\n\nHe received the Best in Show award at Nature Visions in 2019\, Best in Show (Photo Art Division) at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions in 2022\, and the Ollie Fife Award in 2022 from the NVPS.  His photographs of Civil War battlefields have appeared in Hallowed Ground\, a publication of the American Battlefield Trust. \n\n\n\nHis other hobby is powerlifting where he has competed nationally – but due to aches and pains\, no longer competes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

Alain has served as a judge for NVPS competitions\, and now as a reviewer for NVPS Portfolio Projects. \n\n\n\nAlain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeda is a professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience.  He was born and raised in Havana\, Cuba. \n\n\n\nWith a background in photojournalism\, he has developed an extensive portfolio that includes documentary-style photography\, portraiture\, cultural travel photography\, street photography\, action shots\, landscapes\, and night photography. \n\n\n\nAlain is an energetic person with an engaging personality who enjoys collaborating with others in a creative environment. Since he moved to America\, Alain has created his own company “Thru Alain’s Eyes” that designs\, coordinates\, and guides individualized tours that meet the legal requirements for Americans visiting Cuba and allow his clients to support and engage with the Cuban people\, experiencing Cuba like a Cuban. SUMMARY:Field Trip - Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Meadowlark Botanical Gardens offers a wide variety of photographic possibilities.  Participants will have the opportunity to capture landscapes and colorful images of flowers blooming in one of a dozen garden beds in this ever expanding park operated by the Northern Virginia Park Authority.  There’s even something for bird photographers as this park attracts small songbirds with their bird feeders. \n\n\n\nThe park has nearly five miles of winding trails.  The visitor’s center and conservatory overlook the valley gardens where you will find the Lake Caroline Gazebo surrounded by cherry trees.  Azaleas should be blooming so a visit to the Azalea Woods Gazebo might be productive.  The Korean Bell Garden is another popular destination so there is plenty of room to spread out. \n\n\n\nFor your convenience\, here is a map of the gardens to help you plan ahead. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n* You will find images to compose with every lens so bring your favorite.   Consider bringing a macro lens to capture something uniquely colorful and up close or a longer lens if you want to capture the birds that frequent the garden. \n\n\n\n* Don’t forget your circular polarizer to cut the glare some of the more waxy plants. \n\n\n\n* Tripods and monopods are permitted provided they stay out of the garden beds. \n\n\n\n* Bring comfortable walking shoes for paved and mulch walking paths.  There are benches placed throughout the park and lots to see so don’t feel disappointed if you don’t make it all the way around. \n\n\n\nMeadowlark Botanical Gardens has a few rules and guidelines for photography.  Please respect their wishes so everyone can enjoy the gardens. \n\n\n\nMeadowlark has a small entrance fee: \n\n\n\nFree for ages 5 and under \n\n\n\n$4 for ages 6-17 and 55+ \n\n\n\n$8 for ages adults 18-54 \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, April 7\, 2024 from 10:00am – 1:00pmSaturday\, April 6\, 2024 from 10:00am – 1:00pm (Saturday is our alternate rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet in front of the Visitor’s Center for our usual greeting and socializing.  At that time\, we’ll also decide if we want to reconvene for lunch afterwards.  \n\n\n\nRestrooms are located near the cashier’s window at the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections:9750 Meadowlark Gardens CourtVienna\, VA 22182 \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

DESCRIPTION:Program Description \n\n\n\nMike Whalen\n\n\n\nMike enjoys a wide variety of photography subjects. In this video presentation he will show some of his favorite nature photos\, past and present. These still images will be shown in four groups: \n\n\n\n\nFlowers\, Trees\, Leaves and Bugs\n\n\n\nBirds\, Mammals\, Amphibians and Fish\n\n\n\nWater and Landscapes\n\n\n\nClose-Ups and Abstracts\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSome examples are shown below. The presentation will be a short video slide-show (approx. 10 minutes) with background music. The video will also be available to members via the website (within a few days after the date presented). \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. His first camera was an entry level Canon DSLR. \n\n\n\nHe joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. \n\n\n\nHe also volunteers weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter\, and occasionally\, as an event photographer for charitable organizations such as the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \n\n\n\nJoining NVPS was a significant learning opportunity due to the many club activities and inspiration from talented members. \n\n\n\nHis photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel\, and abstract photography. DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS since 2010-2011. He has served on multiple Board positions and is a past President. For the last ten years he has helped with photo workshops in Washington State\, New Mexico\, Alaska and Montana. For the past few years he has been working for the Smithsonian North American Songbird Project. \n\n\n\nSAFE\, Saving Animals from Extinction and the North American Songbird Project is an undertaking of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) of which the National Zoo is a partner. They are always looking for images and have several assigned bird photographers across the country. Basically Stan helps with images of Atlantic Coast songbirds. \n\n\n\nThe Members Gallery prints are part of the collection used for the SAFE project and were all taken over the past three years\, in his backyard.

DESCRIPTION:Covering equipment\, exposure\, autofocus\, craft and flash\, Bill will share what’s he learned and what you might need to know.  Whether you are getting started or getting juried with your bird images\, this update of Bill’s 2020 presentation will offer useful tips and information.  There will be a few nice pictures\, too. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBIO  \n\n\n\nA photographer of student life and sports for his college yearbook in the seventies\, but thereafter without a darkroom or free film\, Bill Corbett resumed his photography education in 2006\, thanks to the gift of a D70 from his wife\, Judy.  Since then he’s become an avid nature and travel photographer.   \n\n\n\nTaking part in activities at the McLean Photo Club\, NVPS\, MAPV/Nature Visions and elsewhere have helped Bill to keep learning. He was also very lucky to find a friend and mentor in the late Bill Prosser\, who is sorely missed. \n\n\n\nBill served for two decades as a U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator.  He is a longtime volunteer for Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions.  After twenty-odd years raising their three kids in Fairfax County\, Bill and Judy moved to Aldie in Loudoun County in 2017\, where nowadays Bill does a lot of his bird photography in their back yard.

DESCRIPTION:Deborah Loeb Bohren\n\n\n\nCompetition Theme:  “Making the World Go ‘Round – Gears\, Sprockets\, and Wheels” within the past three (3) years \n\n\n\nThe image should include gears\, sprockets\, or wheels. Gears\, sprockets\, and wheels have two things in common – they are round and move in a circular motion.  Some we see daily – such as bikes and auto wheels\, while others are usually hidden from view\, such as gears in many watches and clocks.  They come in all sizes\, from minuscule to gigantic.  Some are practical and utilitarian\, and some are colorful and fun. They could be in motion or at rest. They could be functional or no longer in service. Compositions can be created or found\, real or abstract.  Definitions:  A gear is a rotating circular machine part having cut teeth which mesh with another toothed part to transmit torque and speed.  A sprocket\, sprocket-wheel or chainwheel is a profiled wheel with teeth that mesh with a chain\, track\, or other perforated or indented material.  A wheel is a circular frame or disk arranged to revolve on an axis\, as part of a vehicle or machinery. \n\n\n\nFor Reference:  NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \n\n\n\nThe judge is Deborah Loeb Bohren. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nThe offspring of two photographers\, Deborah is convinced an inescapable passion for photography was imprinted on her DNA. Raised on film and in a darkroom\, she believes the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light. Deborah uses her camera as an artist would use a paintbrush and thinks about her work as visual alchemy―a transformation not of matter into gold but of light\, color\, and line into art. Multiple exposure and intentional camera movement are essential tools of her alchemy allowing her to challenge reality rather than simply recording what lies in front of her lens. DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Deb Rose and Tana Ebbole\, joined by Ginger Werz-Petricka\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will review Artist Statements and images and consider how they represent the theme or topic as presented in the Artist Statement. Self-critique is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to review their work with a critical eye. Even if you are not participating in Portfolio Project this year\, please join in and see some amazing photos and the hard work that has gone into developing these portfolios. \n\n\n\nThe Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 12. The Dyke Marsh trail\, which begins at Belle Haven Park\, is an out-and-back trail through woodland with water on one or both sides and views of the Potomac River and sailboats moored at the adjacent Belle Haven Marina.  There is an eagles’ nest and bald eagles can often be seen flying between it and various trees or snags along the trail.  Waterfowl and songbirds are often seen\, and foxes and barred owls have been seen there on occasion.  For those who want to get there early\, sunrise can be seen and is often reflected in the water along both of the small sandy beaches on the left/east side of the trail. Parking is very close to the start of the trail and there are benches along the trail\, making it an easy and enjoyable outing. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nDyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve \n\n\n\nGeorge Washington Memorial Parkway (south of Old Town) \n\n\n\nAlexandria\, Virginia \n\n\n\nParking lot coordinates: 38.7781188\, -77.0512829 \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 9\, 2024 from 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.  \n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, March 10\, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\nNote: We will turn clocks ahead one hour that morning) \n\n\n\n Equipment: \n\n\n\n\nFor wildlife\, a telephoto lens: the more reach the better\n\n\n\nIf you want to make early morning landscape images\, bring a standard or wide angle lens \n\n\n\nTripods or monopods are helpful and permitted but not necessary\n\n\n\nHiking boots or walking shoes are advised: the trail is not paved\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNotes: \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the start of the Dyke Marsh trail at 7:00 a.m. and start walking the trail together.  If you arrive late you are bound to run into NVPS members since there is only one place to enter and exit the trail. Sunrise on March 9 will be at 6:29 a.m.  If you want to go in earlier than 7:00 a.m. to catch the beautiful morning light we will see you on the trail. \n\n\n\n*Park in the parking lot (first left turn – and only turn – after you enter from the GW Parkway) and not on the road leading to the marina\, which is for marina users only.  Park police officers are starting to enforce this parking rule.*  \n\n\n\nIf after completing the Dyke Marsh Trail you want to do more exploring\, drive your car to the north end of the parking lot and explore the tidal marsh area there\, where waterfowl can often be seen.  Be mindful of runners and cyclists since that path is part of the Mount Vernon trail and often gets heavy use. \n\n\n\nRestrooms are located between the parking lot and the Mount Vernon trail as well as at the Belle Haven Marina.  \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024
