SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) - Life with a Camera with Tommy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Bio and Description\n\n\n\nTommy Brown and Friend\n\n\n\nTommy Brown graduated from college and informed his parents he was going to become a photographer; a ludicrous idea as he had never made a noteworthy picture. He saved money working in his dad’s machine shop and took off on a 5 month trip to Europe. This trip would determine the path of my life. It was do or die as he planned to make the pictures that would get him into a graduate art program (ridiculous considering he had not gone to art school as an undergrad). The urgency of this proposition is palpable in the images (some are included in his talk and below). And yes\, he got into the MFA program at Yale\, which was his long-shot at best. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor years\, he didn’t have a darkroom but he photographed obsessively. He’d develop his film at night\, hold the negatives up to see if anything looked good\, sleeve and store. DESCRIPTION:Pete Duvall\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAfter getting bitten by the photo bug in high school\, Pete attended The Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts\, graduating with Bachelor in Fine Arts in Photography. He began teaching at The Art League School that same year\, and has continued since. He went full time freelance in 2004\, and has a studio in the Gateway Arts Center in Brentwood\, MD. His professional specialty is documenting artwork for artists\, galleries and private collections. However\, he has done a lot of commercial\, portrait and event photography. \n\n\n\nClients have included WETA\, The Marriott Corporation\, United Health Care\, The University of Maryland\, The David Driskell Center\, The Congressional Award\, The University of Florida\, The Hitachi Foundation\, American University\, NPR\, Victory Record\, DeSoto Records\, Trustkill Records\, and the Hillwood Estate and Museum. \n\n\n\nHe has been published in Spin Magazine\, The Washington Post\, American Craft\, Punk Planet\, Architecture DC\, Art & Style and The Flow. DESCRIPTION:NVPS May 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\nFor the May 2026 Field Trip we are exploring a new venue that is a bit further afield from many of our previous excursions. \n\n\n\nStep back in time and bring your camera along for the Northern Virginia Photographic Society’s May field trip to the Virginia Renaissance Faire. This historically inspired outdoor event offers a visually engaging environment populated by costumed performers\, musicians\, and interpreters whose activities evoke the pageantry and rhythms of Renaissance life. Throughout the grounds\, we will encounter staged performances and informal street scenes that lend themselves to images emphasizing gesture\, expression\, costume detail\, and atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe Faire’s diverse entertainment—including live music\, comedic and dramatic performances\, demonstrations of historical skills\, and equestrian events such as jousting—provides opportunities to explore both dynamic action and quieter observational moments. This field trip is well suited to candid work\, environmental portraiture\, and visual storytelling in an active public setting where timing and anticipation play an important role. SUMMARY:Portfolio Project – (In Person) Final Review\, Group 2 with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit\n\n\n\nThe final review for Group 2 of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit on Tuesday\, May 19. \n\n\n\nOver 40 years ago\, Brian discovered that photography provided a powerful means for expressing his vision of the world.  Over the years\, his love of the outdoors and photography\, as well as an aptitude for computer technology\, have morphed into a passion (some would say “obsession”) for capturing the elegance and majesty of the unique landscapes and flora of the United States. While the pursuit of nature takes him all over the continent\, he favors the West\, Northeast\, mid-Atlantic\, and Canada’s Eastern Provinces and\, wherever he is\, his love of hiking and backpacking takes him far beyond populated areas into settings which few people visit. \n\n\n\nIn addition to landscape photography\, Brian is always experimenting with other genres of photography and has accumulated thousands of architectural\, travel\, dog\, and city and street life images. During the pandemic\, Brian learned film-making and is working on a couple of film projects. Lately\, he has become particularly enamored with instant photography and now owns way too many instant cameras. Brian’s images are in private residences and corporate offices\, and have appeared in regional magazines. Corporate clients have also used his images for promotional and internal publications. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching workshops\, field trips\, and classes\, and speaking to camera clubs\, schools\, and other nonprofis as well as for-profit entities for over 15 years. He has taught Lightroom to over 1000 students. Brian is well-known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. DESCRIPTION:Members’ Gallery provides a forum for NVPS members to share ideas and images.  It aims to help club members think about their own body of work and various ways to see it.   \n\n\n\nSo\, for the last Members’ Gallery of the season on May 26\, 2026\, everyone in the club is invited to bring any printed material of their own images.  Books\, calendars\, greeting cards\, T-shirts\, puzzles\, mugs\, posters\, etc. are possible print formats. Images printed on traditional photo paper or other media such as wood\, metal\, canvas\, or something else\, framed or not: also welcome!  Printed images could be finished products\, or an idea in process.  \n\n\n\nAnother goal of this now-annual evening is to show how images can move from the computer to real life.  Sometimes a printed image\, no matter the medium\, evokes responses and reveals detail in addition to what a digital image can do. \n\n\n\nFor questions\, please contact Members’ Gallery coordinator Eva Lanyi at nvps-members-gallery@googlegroups.com.

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nRichard Distlerath\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStarting in grade school with a science project to build a pinhole camera\, Richard’s photography endeavors cascaded into a full darkroom where he developed and printed black & white images as well as processed color slides. Photography became lean during his New Jersey working years\, after which the digital age brought about a whole new learning curve. Richard credits Ralph Lee Hopkins from Nat Geo as his first mentor in the digital world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nRichard and his wife Linda have traveled the world to see the beauty of wildlife and of nature itself.  His slideshow depicts big cats\, birds\, class D killer whales\, the narwhal\, and other species in the Arctic and Antarctic\, Africa\, Iceland\, and North and South America. Some of his images show a pair of animals displaying typical behavior\, some present portraits. All are shown in their natural environment\, as Richards enjoys photographing wildlife perfectly adapted to its surroundings. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll images by Richard Distlerath:

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In Person): Denali with Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:Bio and Description\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 and has been active primarily with the club’s educational programs\, Education and Training\, Members Gallery and her favorite\, the Portfolio Project. She is also a past club president and is club rep for MAPV. \n\n\n\nAbout a dozen years ago Ginger and her husband Ron were in Alaska and took the train from Fairbanks to Anchorage. At the Denali stop she looked up at the impressive mountains and asked\, is that Denali? The answer was no\, Denali was above the clouds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout an hour later in the trip the conductor stopped the train and directed everyone to go to the right side and look back\, as the clouds covering Denali had cleared. The view of the distant mountain was still breathtaking\, and the desire to see it again was born. \n\n\n\nFast forward to 2025 and the opportunity finally realizes\, flying into Denali National Park to stay at Camp Denali and experience the beauty of this sub-arctic landscape firsthand. What followed was as memorable as anyone could wish. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll photos taken by Ginger Werz-Petricka:

SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition Awards (In Person) with Judge Ben Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Ben Greenberg\n\n\n\nBen Greenberg is a lifelong resident of Virginia and the cities of Richmond and Charlottesville. His passion for photography began in 1970 with the birth of his first son and for 56 years he has pursued his commitment to capturing images from the natural world in Virginia and 20 other states across the nation\, including 20 national parks. \n\n\n\nBen’s carefully crafted landscape photographs have won local and national awards and competitions including the international grand prize of Kodak’s newspaper competition\, KINSA. His photographs have been exhibited in numerous individual and group shows. His landscape and wildlife images are currently represented in several Virginia galleries and shops\, especially C’ville Arts\, a cooperative gallery on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  \n\n\n\nTaking great pride in creating photographic images of the highest quality in color and black and white\, Ben uses the best of traditional and digital technology in creating and printing his photographs. His photographic prints and all materials used in their presentation meet the highest archival quality standards for a lifetime of enjoyment. \n\n\n\nBen thoroughly enjoys teaching classes and workshops and mentoring individuals in their quest to improve their photography skills and decision-making. He is also very active in making presentations of his landscape and wildlife images to groups\, including camera clubs. His presentations include emphasis on Virginia images\, panoramic photography\, the importance of composition in images\, as well as his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. He hopes to photograph many other states in coming years. He is planning a trip to Alaska in 2027.   \n\n\n\nIn March 2014 Ben published his first photography book\, Natural Virginia.  A coffee table size book (10×17\, 240 pages and 122 images)\, Natural Virginia features panoramic color landscape and wildlife photographs from throughout the state\, celebrating its natural beauty and the need for its preservation. The book was marketed and distributed by the University of Virginia Press and cites the important work of nine statewide non-profit Virginia environmental organizations. There were three sold out printings of Natural Virginia and the more than 5\,000 printed copies. \n\n\n\nBen is now working on his second Virginia book focusing on the importance of the state’s national\, state\, regional\, and local natural public lands. The significant role that these public lands serve for the state’s residents and visitors was demonstrated throughout the Covid pandemic with the need for individuals and families to escape to the natural environment and away from the health dangers created by the virus. DESCRIPTION:NVPS June 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\nThis event is so much fun that we’re continuing a club tradition! Please join us in the beautiful Virginia countryside for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. Established in 1853\, it is the oldest horse show in America. There are multiple areas of competition with beautiful horses and riders of all ages. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person - Digital) - Two Seasons of Japan with Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Biographical Statement:   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer who loves the process of photography from the capture to post-processing. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects during her travels and is particularly drawn to architecture.  \n\n\n\nJudy is a member of the Art League in Alexandria and the Maryland Federation of Art. Her work has been juried into shows across the country\, published in various journals\, and received awards including grand prize in The Washington Post 2022 Travel Photography Contest and Honorable Mention in the 2023 Contest.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHer Member’s Gallery will include images taken in Spring 2024 and Autumn 2025 in Japan. Her spring cherry blossom photo tour was a smorgasbord of locations\, traditional Japanese history\, landscapes\, snow monkeys\, Samurai sword manufacturing\, big cities\, and Sumo wrestlers.  \n\n\n\nJudy returned to Japan last autumn with husband\, Wayne\, who was visiting Japan for the first time. The trip was divided into exploring Japan’s country and culture\, followed by an “Essence of Autumn” small group photo tour to capture gorgeous fall colors and landscapes. Her Member’s Gallery digital presentation will feature images from both trips.
