SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Improve Your Story with Motion – Filmmaking for Photographers With Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Humans have been sharing stories since they first learned to speak. However\, the way we tell those stories has changed over time. We started by painting our stories on the walls of caves. We later learned to write and paint on wood\, paper\, and canvas and still later we invented photography and filmmaking. In the past 20 years\, we got Tik Tok\, Reels on Facebook\, You Tube\, and very short attention spans. Progress has been relentless. \n\n\n\nPhoto slideshows are\, however\, stuck in the in the 70s and 80s. When dad took out the projector to show the slidesfrom the recent trip to Disney World\, there was always a collective sigh in the room and reluctant consent to what was about to be endured during the next hour. Slideshows have not changed much since the 70s. Back then\,filmmaking was an expensive and frustrating experience. Today\, it is the most popular storytelling media.  \n\n\n\nBy including some short clips in your slideshows\, you can better capture the viewer’s attention and tell a richer story. Improve Your Story with Motion will cover how to incorporate filmmaking into your storytelling\, including the following: \n\n\n\n• Why add video to your storytelling \n\n\n\n• What are the differences between shooting stills and capturing motion \n\n\n\n• How to plan for capturing clips for your storytelling \n\n\n\n• What equipment you need to capture motion (Hint: Not much.) \n\n\n\n• What and how to capture the clips you need for your story \n\n\n\nBrian approaches this as well as all of his creative efforts with a simple philosophy: He believes that the most important tool a photographer possesses is their creativity and willingness to put in the effort to capture an image. Equipment can sometimes help to capture an image\, but truly great images are the results of creativity and perspiration. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nOver 40 years ago\, Brian discovered that photography provided a powerful means for expressing his vision of the world. Over the years\, his love of the outdoors and photography as well as an aptitude for computer technology have morphed into a passion (some would say obsession) for capturing the elegance and majesty of the unique landscapes and flora of the United States. While the pursuit of nature takes him all over the continent\, he favors the west\, northeast\, mid-Atlantic\, and Canada’s eastern provinces and\, wherever he is\, his love of hiking and backpacking takes him far beyond populated areas into settings which few people visit. \n\n\n\nIn addition to landscape photography\, Brian is always experimenting with other genres of photography and has accumulated thousands of architectural\, travel\, dog\, and city and street life images. During the pandemic\, Brian learned filmmaking and is working on a couple of film projects. Lately\, he has become particularly enamored with instant photography and now owns way too many instant cameras. Brian’s images are in private residences and corporate offices and have appeared in regional magazines. Corporate clients have also used his images for promotional and internal publications. \n\n\n\nBrian’s philosophy is simple: He believes that the most important tool a photographer possesses is their creativity and willingness to put in the effort to capture an image. Equipment can sometimes help to capture an image\, but truly great images are the results of creativity and perspiration. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching workshops\, field trips\, and classes and speaking to camera clubs\, schools\, and other non-profits as well as for profit entities for over fifteen years. He has taught Lightroom to over 1\,000 students. Brian is well-known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy to understand ways and is a recognized expert in digital workflow with Lightroom\, Photoshop\, Nik software\, and other editing applications. \n\n\n\nBrian has degrees from Purdue University in chemical engineering\, the University of Houston Law Center in law\, and Northern Virginia Community College in photography.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In-Person) Alternative Printing Methods with Phil DeShong
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will discuss the use of non-traditional methods of printing photos digitally.  Typically\, we use papers specifically tailored to give exceptional results with modern inkjet/giclee printers from Epson and Canon. However\, there are many other forms of media that are available including transparent film (digital negatives and color positives)\, papers designed for watercolor painting (cyanotype\, carbon\, platinum-palladium prints) or mechanical printing (photogravures). \n\n\n\nPhil DeShong began taking photos seriously in high school – many decades ago.  His first camera was a used Nikon F.  In college and graduate school\, he was the chief photographer for his research groups\, had a dedicated darkroom\, and learned to print b&w and diazo.  During his career\, Phil and his wife have had the opportunity to live in Europe for several years and to travel extensively which provided many opportunities for photography.  During the bulk of his academic career\, it was impossible to maintain a darkroom and slides were his chief media\, but as soon as digital cameras became available\, he bought switched over to digital.  His first digital camera was a Leica D-Lux 4 which he still owns and uses while traveling.  Phil’s exploration of non-traditional printing techniques centers on his interests in b&w photography and photo restoration efforts.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nf

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery - (Zoom) Bearly | Snowy | Moose | Lightning with Tammy Tideswell
DESCRIPTION:Grizzly bears\, snowy owls\, moose\, and lightning appear worlds apart at first glance. However\, each subject represents a deliberate step in an artistic journey to develop new and distinctively different photographic skills. This presentation takes you from the remote wilderness of Khutzeymateen\, Canada\, and Lake Clark National Park and Preserve\, Alaska — where logistical hurdles were as challenging as the grizzly bears themselves — to the sub-zero temperatures of Wolfe Island\, Canada\, to capture the high-speed action of snowy owls in flight. Following the owls\, we track moose in the rut through the deep and dramatic snow of Grand Teton National Park\, Wyoming. Finally\, we move from the wilderness to the sky\, as we chase lightning and storms across five states in the western United States. Please join me for a photographic journey on the wild side. \n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Michelle Valberg \n\n\n\n\nTammy is a nature and wildlife photographer\, dedicated to capturing the raw beauty and quiet power of the natural world. A passionate Nikon shooter and self-described light chaser\, she seeks that fleeting moment when the world holds still\, and there is harmony between light\, landscape\, and life. Her work is based on a respect for nature and a commitment to authenticity. She believes that photography isn’t about perfection\, but about presence. Her work invites viewers to slow down\, to observe\, and to reconnect with nature — one frame at a time.  \n\n\n\nAn award-winning and published photographer\, Tammy is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association\, the Cosmos Club Cosmotographers\, and the Northern Virginia Photographic Society.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum (Zoom): Iceland and Noisy Birds With Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:A two part presentation on the challenges of photographing wildlife in low light and secondly an update on the latest noise reduction software for post processing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStan joined NVPS in 2011 looking for help with his photography. Up until that point his 40 years with a camera were primarily spent underwater. There he  graduated from a range-finder Nikonos to sophisticated housings and strobes for his digital SLRs. His images and articles were published in dive magazines and scuba destination websites. Prior to transitioning to land photography he taught underwater photography in the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nNot surprisingly his photography today is “nature-centric”. He has been lucky to help guide trips to Yellowstone N.P.\, Alaska\, New Mexico\, Washington State and Florida. All along this journey NVPS has been a constant source for learning the art of photography. \n\n\n\nStan has helped with club field trips\, competitions\, mentoring and has served in the past as President. \n\n\n\nHe has enjoyed giving multiple presentations  to NVPS as well as other local camera clubs.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Piscataway Park
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Seton Droppers\n\n\n\nFor our March field trip\, we will explore the scenic beauty of Piscataway Park in Accokeek\, Maryland. Overlooking the Potomac River and directly across from Mount Vernon\, this National Park Service site offers a peaceful blend of wetlands\, meadows\, forest trails\, and sweeping river views. Early spring is an excellent time to visit—trees begin to bud\, migratory birds return\, and the soft morning light creates ideal conditions for both landscape and wildlife photography. \n\n\n\nThe park is also home to the National Colonial Farm\, where historic structures\, split-rail fences\, and farm animals provide additional photographic opportunities. Whether you enjoy wide-angle landscapes\, wildlife\, or rustic details\, Piscataway Park offers a variety of subjects in a quiet\, natural setting. \n\n\n\nMore information about the park can be found here: https://www.nps.gov/pisc/ \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 21\, 2026 from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.(Rain date: Sunday\, March 22\, 2026 from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) \n\n\n\nPost Field Trip Coffee and Snacks at Dunkin Donuts on MD 210 (at the intersection of Bryan Point Road) \n\n\n\nThe National Colonial Farm Gate opens at 7:00 a.m. and sunrise will be at 7:10 a.m. We will meet just after 7:00 a.m. in the parking lot next to the National Colonial Farm Visitor Center. The visitor center and parking is labeled “Accokeek Foundation at Piscataway Park” on Google Maps. More detailed directions will be provided with the March Field Trip emails. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nPiscataway Park – Accokeek Foundation at Piscataway ParkOn Google Maps use “Accokeek Foundation at Piscataway Park” for your destination. (The official address of 3400 Bryan Point Rd\, Accokeek\, MD brings you to the park border\, NOT the parking lot\, and can be confusing). \n\n\n\nParking is free in the main lot near the visitor center. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n● A telephoto lens is recommended for birds and wildlife \n\n\n\n● A standard or wide-angle lens works well for landscapes and farm structures \n\n\n\n● Tripods and monopods are permitted throughout the park \n\n\n\n● Waterproof footwear is helpful—some areas may be muddy in early spring \n\n\n\n● Restrooms are available near the visitor center \n\n\n\n● The park is largely open and exposed\, so dress in layers for changing morning temperatures \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:Programs - (Zoom): For the Love of Boats with Alison Langley
DESCRIPTION:Alison Langley\n\n\n\nBio and Description\n\n\n\nAlison Langley’s work lives at the intersection of two lifelong passions: sailing and photography. Each informs the other\, creating visuals that are rooted in experience\, patience\, and deep familiarity with life on the water. Her formal education began at New York University\, where she studied film\, and continued at the Rhode Island School of Design\, where she focused on photography. But it was through travel\, work\, and immersion that Alison found her true education. \n\n\n\nDriven by a desire to see the world\, Alison travelled to Australia\, where she worked in the film industry and learned to sail on Sydney Harbour. Sailing began as a personal pursuit\, but quickly evolved into a profession. Alison left the film industry and spent six years crewing aboard a range of vessels\, from the 130-foot classic square rigger Eye of the Wind to privately owned yachts\, sailing around theworld. These years at sea covered the North and South Pacific\, Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean\, to places including the islands of Melanesia\, Japan\, Korea\, Borneo\, and Madagascar. \n\n\n\nIt was during this period that Alison’s photographic voice emerged. Her images\, grounded in authenticity and access\, began appearing in sailing and travel publications worldwide\, establishing her career as a nautical photographer. \n\n\n\nAfter returning to the United States\, Alison spent six years managing Stock Newport\, a photo stock agency specializing in nautical imagery. This experience sharpened her understanding of both the creative and commercial sides of photography\, laying the foundation for her freelance career\, which she launched in the late 1990s. Alison eventually settled in Midcoast Maine\, where Penobscot Bay\, long a haven for wooden boats\, continues to inspire her work. In addition to her assignments\, Alison teaches workshops at Maine Media aboard the Windjammer “Angelique”\, sharing her decades of experience. \n\n\n\nPhotographing what you love can be deeply rewarding\, but developing a meaningful body of work requires more than just repetition. It demands deliberate practice\, thoughtful feedback\, and a willingness to develop the adjacent skills that strengthen one’s core focus. In this talk\, Alison explores the creative rewards that can come from deeply committing to a specific subject. \n\n\n\nFor Alison\, photographing boats is about far more than documenting objects that float. It is about capturing a way of life.

SUMMARY:Member's Forum: (In Person) Why Architecture? with Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Judy Guenther\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther enjoys photographing a wide variety of subjects during her world travels. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the interesting people of the world is a special joy for her. She is also drawn to the details\, patterns\, abstracts\, and design of architecture\, especially modern architecture. She has won several awards\, including the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest and Honorable Mention in their 2023 Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, The Art League Gallery of Alexandria\, and the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis. Her web site is www.judyguentherphotography.com and her Instagram account is @guenther.judy \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nBlue Stacks by Judy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy shares her answer to the question “Why Architecture?” in her presentation. For her\, the composition possibilities are endless in architecture\, especially modern architecture. New construction methods and materials\, in tandem with creative architectural designs\, have produced buildings that are not just functional\, but are intrinsically beautiful. Curves\, geometric patterns\, reflective glass\, titanium plates\, attract like a gourmet meal. \n\n\n\nWhat can you find inside these buildings? Amazing staircases\, soaring ceilings\, views below and above\, paintings\, warm woods and cool metals\, arches\, squares\, and more. What can you find outside? Entire buildings that are works of art\, closeups of geometrical patterns\, clouds and other buildings reflected in the glass\, and unlimited abstract compositions. Both Judy\, and her photographer husband\, Wayne\, find that they always move a little faster and stay a bit longer when they spot modern architecture. \n\n\n\n\nIntricate Design by Judy Guenther\n\n\n\nThe Gathering by Judy Guenther\n\n\n\nPleated Architecture by Judy Guenther

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Virtual): (In Person) The Places I Visited in 2024 with Kieulan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nKieulan Nguyen \n\n\n\nKieulan Nguyen has been a photographer for a long time\, and her work consists of macro\, landscapes\, travel\, street photography and black & white photography. Her approach to photography is using her camera to find beauty in the things and people around her. She uses different techniques such as high key\, intentional camera movement (ICM)\, long exposures\, and multiple exposures. Currently\, she is working on a black and white project and hopes to be able to present it to NVPS in the next year or so. \n\n\n\nAt the end of December of 2021 Kieulan retired from government and became a full-time photographer and digital artist. She now enjoys travelling to different countries with her family and friends to capture the beautiful landscapes as well as people’s lives and interactions via street photography. \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Kieulan would like to show the lives of many Cubans who still live as in the 1950s. She will also show the beautiful street art from places she’s been in Chile; the bustling life in La Paz\, Bolivia; and the unforgettable grand landscape of the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia. \n\n\n\nKieulan lives in Virginia and also volunteers with The Vietnamese Photographic Society of Northern Virginia\, with which she’s been involved for the last ten years. It has been a wonderful experience for her\, because she likes to give back to the Vietnamese community through teaching and encouraging others to learn the art of photography.  \n\n\n\nAll images by Kieulan Nguyen:

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Print) (In Person) - Mostly Birds with Clark Barker
DESCRIPTION:Clark Barker\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nClark’s first real camera was a used 35mm fixed lens Voigtlander\, followed by a Minolta SRT101 after college and gainful employment. After a couple more Minoltas\, a digital 8 megapixel Olympus and several Canons\, he went mirrorless with a Canon R5 the first day it was available. Most of the pre-digital photos were 35mm slides. \n\n\n\nClark’s past photographic experience was mostly as a tourist taking snapshots of interesting places visited and photos of his son and daughter when they were children. He still enjoys taking travel photos and has expanded to birds\, other wildlife and macro photography. \n\n\n\nClark joined NVPS in 2015 which led to vastly improved comprehension of the impact of shutter speed\, aperture and ISO on the photo\, as well as an appreciation for composition.  He was the class two color print Photographer of the Year for 2016-2017.  He uses Lightroom/Photoshop CC and Topaz for post processing.  He cuts his own mats to mount photos printed with an Epson P800 printer and has recently transitioned from using mostly luster type paper to using matte paper.  Description \n\n\n\nAll images by Clark Barker:

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Print) (In Person) - Memories from More Than 25 Years of Photography with Patricia Deege
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Deege\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nPatricia has been a member of NVPS since the late 1990’s. Before then\, she had a good Nikon film camera but little knowledge of the “how to’s” of photography. F-stops\, shutter speed\, depth of field\, etc. –what did that mean?  Starting as a total beginner\, she learned much of her photography craft through attendance at weekly club meetings and numerous photography workshops. From the film era she graduated to the digital age and has enjoyed additional inspiration from all the amazing new techniques and software. Her current camera gear is the mirrorless kind and she has enjoyed being able to get closer to her subjects with lighter-weight zoom lenses\, often without using a tripod. \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nNature has ever been Patricia’s major love\, be it flowers\, landscapes\, or wildlife but sometimes she focuses on street photography and the abstract. Converting an older Nikon camera for infrared photography opened up another venue for exploration. She is always looking out for that unexpected photo opportunity. This presentation includes some examples of the many different scenes she has captured over the years. \n\n\n\n\nPatient Donkey by Patricia Deege\n\n\n\nPraying Lion by Patricia Deege\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAutumn at Great Falls by Patricia Deege\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIrises\, MIsty Peach by Patricia Deege

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
DESCRIPTION:NVPS February 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\nBasilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception \n\n\n\nImage. by Willa Friedman\n\n\n\nFor our February field trip\, we will visit one of Washington’s most breathtaking architectural landmarks: the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. As the largest Catholic church in North America\, the Basilica offers an extraordinary range of photographic opportunities—from soaring domes and intricate mosaics to quiet chapels\, stained glass\, and sweeping architectural lines. The morning light filtering through the nave and transepts creates beautiful color and contrast\, making this an ideal location for both wide-angle compositions and detail-oriented studies. \n\n\n\nThe Basilica is an active place of worship\, so please be respectful of parishioners and any services that may be taking place. Photography is permitted throughout most public areas\, but tripods are not allowed inside the Basilica. \n\n\n\nMore information about the Basilica can be found here: https://www.nationalshrine.org/ \n\n\n\nImage by Bob Friedman\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 21\, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.(Rain date: Saturday\, February 28\, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.) \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 9:00 a.m. inside the lower-level entrance (West Entrance). SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) Theme - Simplicity with Judge Deborah Loeb Bohren
DESCRIPTION:Raised on film and in a darkroom\, Deb believes the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light. She likes to use her camera like a paintbrush and thinks of her work as visual alchemy: a transformation not of matter into gold but rather of light\, color and line into art. Minimalism\, abstraction\, in-camera multiple exposure and intentional camera movement (ICM) are all essential tools of her alchemy. She finds that these techniques work in a way that are simultaneously controllable and unpredictable\, allowing her to challenge reality and capture a feeling or impression rather than replicating reality with precision. \n\n\n\nHer work is part of individual and corporate collections across the country\, and her images have been part of solo and group shows at galleries in the U.S. and England. Most recently she was the featured artist at Metro Art Studios in Bridgeport with her Curvilinear series\, exploring how abstraction in photography can transcend literal representation\, and offer a deeper\, more intuitive experience of form\, movement\, and space. And this summer her Visual Alchemy in Tuscany and Apple a Day series will be on exhibit at the Cousen Rose Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard.  \n\n\n\nDeb serves as a judge and guest presenter for camera clubs across the country and in England\, as well as teaching a range of photography courses online. Her newest venture  has her leading international travel photography workshops to London\, Paris\, Lisbon and beyond. Deb also continues to chronicles her global adventures in words and images as a contributing editor for Everett Potter’s Travel Report. \n\n\n\nClasses and Tours: www.travelinglensphoto.com \n\n\n\nPortfolio: www.deborahloebbohren.com

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In Person) Preliminary Portfolio Review with Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Willa Friedman and George Hogeman
DESCRIPTION:During this review\, the portfolio co–chairs\, Ginger Werz–Petricka\, Willa Friedman and George Hogeman\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement.  Self–analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye. \n\n\n\nThe preliminary review for Group 2 will be held on March 10. Final reviews will be April 14 for the first group and May 19 for the second group. \n\n\n\nFor further information and more details regarding the Portfolio Project\, please contact Portfolio Projects under Club Activities at Board Contacts. To view the galleries from prior year portfolios\, see Portfolio Project Galleries.

SUMMARY:Programs - (Zoom): Seeing More Creatively with Lyn Morton
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever been in a great location and thought\,“There’s nothing interesting to photograph here…”— only to later see someone else’s images from the same place and wonder how they saw so much more? \n\n\n\nIn The Art & Science of Seeing More Creatively\, photographer and educator Lyn Morton explores how creativity in photography isn’t just about being“artsy\,” but about learning how to see — and understanding how your camera helps bring that vision to life. \n\n\n\nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN:How to move beyond obvious compositionsHow to spot creative opportunities others missHow story and intention shape stronger imagesHow lenses\, perspective\, and technical choices influence creativitySimple creative drills to train your eyeHow comparison and rigid expectations can block creativity — and how to avoid them \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLyn Morton is a North Jersey–based professional photographer\, educator\, and storyteller with a background spanning photojournalism\, marketing\, and community leadership. A former Army photojournalist and leader of Canon USA’s Live Learning program\, he now runs Lyn Morton Photography\, serving clients across New Jersey and New York\, and Shutterbug Life\, an online community for photographers who want to learn\, grow\, and create together. SUMMARY:Member's Forum (Zoom) - Japan (and Hong Kong and Taipei) by Boat with Jim and Jerri McDermott
DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nJim and Jerri McDermott\n\n\n\nJerri and Jim McDermott have been active members of NVPS for over 10 years. Jerri was a librarian in the Fairfax County schools\, and Jim an economist in the federal government. Both credit their friends at NVPS with encouraging their learning and development as photographers. They’ve both migrated to using mirrorless Nikon cameras. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nHaving lucked into a repositioning cruise deal\, NVPS members Jerri and Jim McDermott traveled to Hong Kong\, Taipei\, and along the coast of Japan in 2025. (Repositioning happens when cruise lines move ships from sailing in one geographic region to another. The cruises are sometimes less expensive than “normal” cruises\, generally less frequent\, but may not offer the same range of shore excursions.) Jerri and Jim will share some photography from the trip\, as well as observations on doing photography on a cruise\, particularly a repositioning cruise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\n\nPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\n\nPhoto by Jim McDermott

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Library of Congress
DESCRIPTION:Library of Congress \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor our December field trip\, we will explore one of the most iconic and photogenic interiors in Washington\, DC—the Library of Congress. The Jefferson Building is a masterpiece of Beaux-Arts architecture\, filled with soaring ceilings\, marble staircases\, mosaics\, and murals. In December\, the Library is beautifully adorned with holiday decorations\, including a grand Christmas tree in the Great Hall. The seasonal touches add warmth and color to the already stunning architecture\, offering unique opportunities to capture both the historic grandeur and the holiday spirit. This trip is perfect for those who enjoy photographing symmetry\, patterns\, and festive details in a historic setting. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, December 13\, 2025\, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.We will meet at the Library of Congress Jefferson Building entrance 10 minutes before opening time (9:50 a.m.)\, so that we can enter together. The entrance is on First St SE between Independence and East Capitol. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free. However\, timed-entry passes are required and must be reserved in advance through the Library of Congress website. Details can be found here: https://www.loc.gov/visit/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere:Library of Congress – Jefferson Building10 First Street SEWashington\, DC 20540 \n\n\n\nTwo-hour metered street parking is available in DC on Saturdays. SUMMARY:Education & Training: (Zoom) Anonymous Critique with Stan Bysshe\, Judy Guenther\, and Bill Millhouser
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nLike most NVPS members\, Stan\, Judy\, and Bill have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what was it that caught your eye\, did you convey that vision to the viewer. \n\n\n\nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images.  The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose.  Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\n\n\n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help;\n\n\n\nExperiments with new processing techniques; and\n\n\n\nImages you are considering for competition.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. \n\n\n\nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, November 24\, 2025\, (this is a change to the earlier announced date) to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Stan\, Judy\, and Bill to review them before the December 9 meeting. \n\n\n\nSubmitting Images\n\n\n\nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 2\, 2025 to allow time for reviewing the images before the December 9 meeting. \n\n\n\nYou may submit up to three images to this NVPS Dropbox folder:  https://www.dropbox.com/request/AqHnGlwnD97MnW8LUFDr \n\n\n\nResize Your Image(s)\n\n\n\nSize images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically.  Image resolution should be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI). Image format is jpg. Color space is sRGB. \n\n\n\nRename your image filename(s)\n\n\n\nFile naming is important. Include the image title preceded with 1-\, 2-\, or 3-.  Examples: 1-Fishing Boat.jpg\, 2-Old Dock.jpg\, 3-Hawaiian Sunset.jpg. Files starting with 1- will be highest priority\, 2- medium priority\, and 3- low priority. Depending on the number of images submitted\, we might not get through them all\, so number your most important image with a 1-. Spaces are OK\, but do not use any special characters in the filename. \n\n\n\nNote:  Because those critiquing will see the filenames\, do not include your name there\, just the number prefix and image title. \n\n\n\nQuestions?\n\n\n\nContact the Education & Training Coordinator Nick Bauer; email information can be found at Board Contacts. \n\n\n\nBiographies:\n\n\n\nStan Bysshe\n\n\n\nStan Bysshe\n\n\n\nStan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand-me-down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the scuba gear\, and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography. Still\, nature remained a driving force behind his images. \n\n\n\nSince joining the club\, Stan has “volunteered” for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, and Mentoring\, and is a past President. This will be his fourth Anonymous Critique. \n\n\n\nFor the past several years Stan has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska\, Yellowstone National Park\, New Mexico\, and Florida. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts.  She has won several awards\, including the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and The Art League Gallery of Alexandria\, Va. Her web site is Judy Guenther Photography. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\nBill became interested in Photography in the mid 1970s\, but his deep dive into all things photography skyrocketed when he joined NVPS in 2010. Bill is an avid bird\, wildlife\, and travel photographer\, and his trips overseas have often combined birdwatching and photography. Over the years he has visited Costa Rica (multiple times)\, Ecuador\, Patagonia\, Kenya\, Tanzania\, South Africa\, the Falkland Islands\, and Iceland. Bill has served as NVPS coordinator for Field Trips\, Competitions\, and Mentoring\, and is a past President.

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) Distilling the Essence of Architecture with Angie McMonigal
DESCRIPTION:Join Angie McMonigal as she discusses techniques for creating more dynamic architectural images focused on detailed and abstract interpretations. She’ll share examples from various cities throughout the US and Europe\, emphasizing compositional techniques to make your images stronger.  \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nAngie is a fine art and commercial architecture photographer based in Chicago striving to bring a detailed\, thoughtful perspective to her work\, whether for clients or through the workshops she leads. Having grown up surrounded by nature yet fascinated by the big city she’s called home for more than two decades; she brings the meditative calm of her upbringing to a terrain that’s always transforming. Drawing from her education in the micro sciences (molecular biology\, microbiology\, virology) her focus is more frequently on bold architectural details rather than sweeping cityscapes\, creating images that celebrate those unexpectedly iconic elements hiding in plain sight.  \n\n\n\nShe frequently works with art consultants\, designers\, brands\, architectural firms\, and private collectors creating images that draw out the organic interplay between design\, structure\, environment\, and society. \n\n\n\nPublication credits include Chicago Magazine\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, Forbes\, and Architectural Digest. Exhibitions by galleries in Chicago\, Los Angeles\, New York\, Barcelona\, and other destinations.

SUMMARY:Member's Forum: (In Person) The World of Bubbles - Fun Projects for Slow Days with Lidia Slominski
DESCRIPTION:Lidia Slominski\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nLidia has a full-time job\, a husband and 2 teenage boys. Art is her way to process emotions and express her views of the world around without using words. She always loved taking photos; she continues to feel inspired every time she looks around\, whether alone\, with her family or at work\, by anything and everything. She likes to create stories around the photographs that she takes. She looks at them as life scenes and uses them as inspiration for her paintings. Sometimes she creates photograph series\, or tells the story in a poem. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nWhen UR Heart is in the Bubbles by Lidia Slominski\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLidia Slominski started using bubbles for her art when the children were very young. That is also when she paid more attention to Dr. Seuss’s books with playful\, simple texts and illustrations with powerful messages on success within us\, life’s inevitable highs and lows\, devotion\, perseverance\, and resilience. The bubbles are beautiful\, delicate\, fragile\, yet resilient despite sun\, heat\, wind and cold. \n\n\n\nIn her portfolio project A Story with Bubbles\, the intent was to symbolize the human struggle and determination to grow and to achieve\, despite the obstacles we must overcome\, but at the same time appreciate the joy and the humor along the journey. \n\n\n\nBut it doesn’t have to be that deep. Bubbles are an easy\, versatile and fun subject to photograph and most importantly anytime\, anywhere. In addition\, you can make your own bubble mixture\, or you can buy it in the store. You can use a wand or a bubble blowing machine. You can photograph them in everyday scenes or focus on reflections\, patterns\, repetition\, textures or light play. \n\n\n\nFree Captive by Lidia Slominski

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: (Virtual\, In Person) What I Have Seen – A Walk Through Pictures with Seton Droppers
DESCRIPTION:Seton Droppers\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nSeton’s lifelong journey as a photographer began in childhood\, wandering through fields\, forests\, and creeks with a curious eye and muddy shoes. At age seven\, he received his first camera—a mysterious box that transformed light into memory. That gift sparked a six-decade relationship with photography\, one rooted not in technical precision but in the joy of seeing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nThese images represent Seton’s early journey—captured before he became a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society. They reflect a time when his photography was guided purely by instinct and curiosity\, rather than formal technique. Now\, as he continues to learn the art of composition and presentation through the Society’s mentorship and community\, these photographs stand as a personal record of how he once saw the world—and a foundation for how he is learning to see it anew. \n\n\n\nBecause sometimes\, the most extraordinary things are revealed not just in what we see—but in how we learn to see better. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll photos by Seton Droppers

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In Person) (Prints) 65 Years of Making Images with Alan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is a little different from the usual.  It is a curated collection of eighteen of the thousands of images Alan has created over the time he has been engaged in photography. Creation years range from 1960 to 2025\, and the source media ranges from drugstore prints to Polaroids to slides to digital images. In this presentation\, he includes the year made\, the location\, and the type/brand/model of his camera.        \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlan’s interest in photography was encouraged in ninth grade by a science teacher who taught him the art of film developing.  At that time\, he was using a Kodak Brownie. In college and working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper\, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant\, crisp pictures.  But encouraged by a classmate and photographer\, Alan got access to the college’s darkroom\, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request. His camera was a Russian-made TTL model T-32.  His high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR\, and that became Alan’s Holy Grail.  However\, financial considerations dictated that Alan’s first true SLR was a Minolta SRT-101. Later\, he upgraded to a Minolta X700. In 2003.  Alan’s brother-in-law was getting married\, and Alan was the photographer.  An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100.   It was love at first click!  Since then\, Alan has had a D100\, D200\, D300\, D800\, D810\, and for the past eight years\, D850. A member of NVPS for the past 13 years\, Alan still considers himself more of a photojournalist than an art photographer.
