SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) No Theme with Judge Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years.  \n\n\n\nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filmmaking his favorite subject is the human condition—telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. In addition to his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching photography more than ten years for workshop companies and non–profits including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the Mid–Atlantic. He is an exceptional Lightroom instructor and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and other photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy–to–understand ways. \n\n\n\nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful\, but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking and just enjoy life. DESCRIPTION:I began photography as the high school yearbook photographer using a 4×5 Speed Graphic; the very definition of immersion. My senior year\, I worked after school as the darkroom monkey for a commercial & industrial photographer. These experiences still shape my imagery as I still shoot film and large format. I taught for The University of Texas at Austin and Ohio Wesleyan University. My specialties are the history of Pictorialism and 19th century printing methods. \n\n\n\nSaint Andrews University (Scotland) granted me a Ph.D. in art history for my dissertation on soft focus lenses and Pictorialism. file:///C:/Users/russ/Downloads/WRussellYoungPhDThesis.pdf (warning: reading it has been known to induce narcolepsy).  \n\n\n\nThe Royal Photographic Society denominated me as a Fellow about 20 years ago. \n\n\n\nLiving for 18 years on an isolated farm near The Blue Ridge\, landscapes have been the primary subject of my cameras. Although I capture the landscape with both film and digital\, the vast majority of my images are black & white. Impossible to avoid\, I use PhotoShop and its ilk minimally. My photographs have been viewed in both one-person exhibitions and group shows.

DESCRIPTION:BIO:  \n\n\n\nFrank Van Ripper\n\n\n\nFrank Van Riper is an award-winning documentary and fine art photographer\, journalist\, author and lecturer whose work has been published internationally.  \n\n\n\nHis photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery (Washington\, DC) as well as in the Portland Museum of Art (Portland\, Maine.) His 1998 book of photography and essays\, Down East Maine/A World Apart\, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the silver award for photography from the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington.  \n\n\n\nHis latest book is Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980\, which immediately became an Amazon bestseller. His previous book\, done in collaboration with his wife and professional partner Judith Goodman\, was Serenissima: Venice in Winter\, a coffee table collection of black and white photographs and essays\, published in 2008 both in the US and Italy.  Their next collaboration—and their first book in color–is The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria and its Ancient Neighbors. (Fall\, 2025) \n\n\n\nVan Riper was a member of the New York Daily News Washington Bureau for 20 years\, serving as White House correspondent\, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. He was a 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard. In 1982 he partnered with his wife in commercial and documentary photography. In 1992\, Van Riper became photography columnist of the Washington Post\, where his column\, “Talking Photography\,” appeared for 19 years. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In Person - Digital) - What Do I See with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Since joining NVPS in 2015\, Wayne’s multiple presentations of his work has included images in about every genre\, but he remains a fine art photographer at heart.  His images often highlight his interest in patterns\, lines\, and geometric content like curves\, circles\, and triangles.  But there’s more to Wayne’ssubject interests\, which he’ll show in this presentation. It is a collection of work he particularly likes from the past five years\, mixed together on purpose and including a few images he may have shown in digital competitions or on his Facebook feed.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWayne began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Fine Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in two local art galleries and The Art League of Alexandria presented many opportunities to create new work for his pleasure and competitions. Joining NVPS in 2015 added both camaraderie and more opportunities for presenting new work.  He has been fortunate to travel widely with his wife Judy\, which is a trigger to follow his basic photography rule; “Be There; Shoot.” \n\n\n\nWayne has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 30 years\, including MAPV 2021-2024\, and placed in many NVPS monthly competitions.   He uses two OM System bodies and two Olympus lenses (24-40mm f2.8 and 40-150mm f4) and\, increasingly\, the iPhone camera.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person - Print)  Hawaii with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:As an architect and design/construction manager for the past 45 years\, photography has always been an integral part of Jim’s career\, starting with a small darkroom in the College of Architecture during the early 70’s. Subsequently\, he progressed from a tiny darkroom over a clothes dryer to a fully equipped facility for work; from a 4×5 view camera and finally into the digital age. Jim’s work has been published in several issues of Black and White Magazine and LensWork\, and shown in hanging exhibits in California and Chicago.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter moving from southern California to Virginia to be closer to family\, he joined NVPS in 2019 and has enjoyed its comaraderie and friendships. Travel photography has also been and remains a favorite part of the trips he has taken over the years\, of which his five trips to the Hawaiian Islands were most memorable. He spent much of his time there hiking ocean side trails\, exploring the jungle-like forests\, viewing the islands from helicopters\, throwing snowballs at top of Mauna Kea\, and rising at 4:30 am to see a volcano at sunrise. The photographs he is showing depict the great photographic opportunities the islands offer.

DESCRIPTION:Biographical Statement:   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer who loves the process of photography from the capture to post-processing. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects during her travels and is particularly drawn to architecture.  \n\n\n\nJudy is a member of the Art League in Alexandria and the Maryland Federation of Art. Her work has been juried into shows across the country\, published in various journals\, and received awards including grand prize in The Washington Post 2022 Travel Photography Contest and Honorable Mention in the 2023 Contest.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHer Member’s Gallery will include images taken in Spring 2024 and Autumn 2025 in Japan. Her spring cherry blossom photo tour was a smorgasbord of locations\, traditional Japanese history\, landscapes\, snow monkeys\, Samurai sword manufacturing\, big cities\, and Sumo wrestlers.  \n\n\n\nJudy returned to Japan last autumn with husband\, Wayne\, who was visiting Japan for the first time. The trip was divided into exploring Japan’s country and culture\, followed by an “Essence of Autumn” small group photo tour to capture gorgeous fall colors and landscapes. Her Member’s Gallery digital presentation will feature images from both trips.

I began to wonder why I chose to visit this desolate place where landmarks are named to evoke hell or the devil.  \n\n\n\nBut at the crack of dawn and as the sun set\, I observed the beauty of Death Valley. I witnessed the play of golden light and blue shadows on wind-sculpted sand dunes. I followed the quickly moving alpenglow as it cast shades of rose\, violet\, and orange across badlands and rugged mountains. SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition Awards (In Person) with Judge Ben Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Ben Greenberg\n\n\n\nBen Greenberg is a lifelong resident of Virginia and the cities of Richmond and Charlottesville. His passion for photography began in 1970 with the birth of his first son and for 56 years he has pursued his commitment to capturing images from the natural world in Virginia and 20 other states across the nation\, including 20 national parks. \n\n\n\nBen’s carefully crafted landscape photographs have won local and national awards and competitions including the international grand prize of Kodak’s newspaper competition\, KINSA. His photographs have been exhibited in numerous individual and group shows. His landscape and wildlife images are currently represented in several Virginia galleries and shops\, especially C’ville Arts\, a cooperative gallery on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  \n\n\n\nTaking great pride in creating photographic images of the highest quality in color and black and white\, Ben uses the best of traditional and digital technology in creating and printing his photographs. His photographic prints and all materials used in their presentation meet the highest archival quality standards for a lifetime of enjoyment. \n\n\n\nBen thoroughly enjoys teaching classes and workshops and mentoring individuals in their quest to improve their photography skills and decision-making. He is also very active in making presentations of his landscape and wildlife images to groups\, including camera clubs. His presentations include emphasis on Virginia images\, panoramic photography\, the importance of composition in images\, as well as his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. He hopes to photograph many other states in coming years. He is planning a trip to Alaska in 2027.   \n\n\n\nIn March 2014 Ben published his first photography book\, Natural Virginia.  A coffee table size book (10×17\, 240 pages and 122 images)\, Natural Virginia features panoramic color landscape and wildlife photographs from throughout the state\, celebrating its natural beauty and the need for its preservation. The book was marketed and distributed by the University of Virginia Press and cites the important work of nine statewide non-profit Virginia environmental organizations. There were three sold out printings of Natural Virginia and the more than 5\,000 printed copies. \n\n\n\nBen is now working on his second Virginia book focusing on the importance of the state’s national\, state\, regional\, and local natural public lands. The significant role that these public lands serve for the state’s residents and visitors was demonstrated throughout the Covid pandemic with the need for individuals and families to escape to the natural environment and away from the health dangers created by the virus. DESCRIPTION:Bio and Description\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 and has been active primarily with the club’s educational programs\, Education and Training\, Members Gallery and her favorite\, the Portfolio Project. She is also a past club president and is club rep for MAPV. \n\n\n\nAbout a dozen years ago Ginger and her husband Ron were in Alaska and took the train from Fairbanks to Anchorage. At the Denali stop she looked up at the impressive mountains and asked\, is that Denali? The answer was no\, Denali was above the clouds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout an hour later in the trip the conductor stopped the train and directed everyone to go to the right side and look back\, as the clouds covering Denali had cleared. The view of the distant mountain was still breathtaking\, and the desire to see it again was born. \n\n\n\nFast forward to 2025 and the opportunity finally realizes\, flying into Denali National Park to stay at Camp Denali and experience the beauty of this sub-arctic landscape firsthand. What followed was as memorable as anyone could wish. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll photos taken by Ginger Werz-Petricka:

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nRichard Distlerath\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStarting in grade school with a science project to build a pinhole camera\, Richard’s photography endeavors cascaded into a full darkroom where he developed and printed black & white images as well as processed color slides. Photography became lean during his New Jersey working years\, after which the digital age brought about a whole new learning curve. Richard credits Ralph Lee Hopkins from Nat Geo as his first mentor in the digital world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nRichard and his wife Linda have traveled the world to see the beauty of wildlife and of nature itself.  His slideshow depicts big cats\, birds\, class D killer whales\, the narwhal\, and other species in the Arctic and Antarctic\, Africa\, Iceland\, and North and South America. Some of his images show a pair of animals displaying typical behavior\, some present portraits. All are shown in their natural environment\, as Richards enjoys photographing wildlife perfectly adapted to its surroundings. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll images by Richard Distlerath:

DESCRIPTION:Members’ Gallery provides a forum for NVPS members to share ideas and images.  It aims to help club members think about their own body of work and various ways to see it.   \n\n\n\nSo\, for the last Members’ Gallery of the season on May 26\, 2026\, everyone in the club is invited to bring any printed material of their own images.  Books\, calendars\, greeting cards\, T-shirts\, puzzles\, mugs\, posters\, etc. are possible print formats. SUMMARY:Portfolio Project – (In Person) Final Review\, Group 2 with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit\n\n\n\nThe final review for Group 2 of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit on Tuesday\, May 19. \n\n\n\nOver 40 years ago\, Brian discovered that photography provided a powerful means for expressing his vision of the world.  Over the years\, his love of the outdoors and photography\, as well as an aptitude for computer technology\, have morphed into a passion (some would say “obsession”) for capturing the elegance and majesty of the unique landscapes and flora of the United States. While the pursuit of nature takes him all over the continent\, he favors the West\, Northeast\, mid-Atlantic\, and Canada’s Eastern Provinces and\, wherever he is\, his love of hiking and backpacking takes him far beyond populated areas into settings which few people visit. \n\n\n\nIn addition to landscape photography\, Brian is always experimenting with other genres of photography and has accumulated thousands of architectural\, travel\, dog\, and city and street life images. During the pandemic\, Brian learned film-making and is working on a couple of film projects. Lately\, he has become particularly enamored with instant photography and now owns way too many instant cameras. Brian’s images are in private residences and corporate offices\, and have appeared in regional magazines. Corporate clients have also used his images for promotional and internal publications. \n\n\n\nBrian has been teaching workshops\, field trips\, and classes\, and speaking to camera clubs\, schools\, and other nonprofis as well as for-profit entities for over 15 years. He has taught Lightroom to over 1000 students. Brian is well-known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. DESCRIPTION:NVPS May 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\nFor the May 2026 Field Trip we are exploring a new venue that is a bit further afield from many of our previous excursions. \n\n\n\nStep back in time and bring your camera along for the Northern Virginia Photographic Society’s May field trip to the Virginia Renaissance Faire. This historically inspired outdoor event offers a visually engaging environment populated by costumed performers\, musicians\, and interpreters whose activities evoke the pageantry and rhythms of Renaissance life. Throughout the grounds\, we will encounter staged performances and informal street scenes that lend themselves to images emphasizing gesture\, expression\, costume detail\, and atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe Faire’s diverse entertainment—including live music\, comedic and dramatic performances\, demonstrations of historical skills\, and equestrian events such as jousting—provides opportunities to explore both dynamic action and quieter observational moments. This field trip is well suited to candid work\, environmental portraiture\, and visual storytelling in an active public setting where timing and anticipation play an important role. He began teaching at The Art League School that same year\, and has continued since. He went full time freelance in 2004\, and has a studio in the Gateway Arts Center in Brentwood\, MD. His professional specialty is documenting artwork for artists\, galleries and private collections. However\, he has done a lot of commercial\, portrait and event photography. \n\n\n\nClients have included WETA\, The Marriott Corporation\, United Health Care\, The University of Maryland\, The David Driskell Center\, The Congressional Award\, The University of Florida\, The Hitachi Foundation\, American University\, NPR\, Victory Record\, DeSoto Records\, Trustkill Records\, and the Hillwood Estate and Museum. \n\n\n\nHe has been published in Spin Magazine\, The Washington Post\, American Craft\, Punk Planet\, Architecture DC\, Art & Style and The Flow. SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) - Life with a Camera with Tommy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Bio and Description\n\n\n\nTommy Brown and Friend\n\n\n\nTommy Brown graduated from college and informed his parents he was going to become a photographer; a ludicrous idea as he had never made a noteworthy picture. He saved money working in his dad’s machine shop and took off on a 5 month trip to Europe. This trip would determine the path of my life. It was do or die as he planned to make the pictures that would get him into a graduate art program (ridiculous considering he had not gone to art school as an undergrad). The urgency of this proposition is palpable in the images (some are included in his talk and below). And yes\, he got into the MFA program at Yale\, which was his long-shot at best. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor years\, he didn’t have a darkroom but he photographed obsessively. He’d develop his film at night\, hold the negatives up to see if anything looked good\, sleeve and store. DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nSusan Blalock\n\n\n\nSusan was introduced to photography by her grandfather\, but after college she did not have much time for photography.  The 2020 pandemic gave Susan time to spend taking photos.  Susan found NVPS through a simple google search and has been active member since 2021.  In 2025\, Susan was NVPS’ Novice Versatile Photographer of the year.  She enjoys shooting a variety of subjects including flowers and garden photography\, abstracts using ICM\, wildlife\, and architectural photography.    \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs an avid gardener\, Susan enjoys photographing plants wherever she goes.  Whether formal gardens or on roadsides\, there is always something to see and shoot.  While a garden is at its prime in the warmer months\, there is still plenty to see and photograph in all seasons.  A garden is not just home to plants\, but a variety of insects\, birds\, and small mammals who also depend on the garden to maintain them throughout the year.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll images by Susan Blalock

DESCRIPTION:David’s mother\, an amateur art historian\, introduced him to the fine arts\, but it was his sister — then a serious photographer — who gave him his first camera in high school. She later advised him to get a Pentax when he went to Africa with the Peace Corps. During his career in international development that followed\, David used the Pentax and a series of Cannon PowerShots and iPhones to capture street scenes and portraits. By the early 2000’s he was posting his images on social media. During this time\, he also began creating and posting photo collages (@crashingphotos) and abstracts (@davidabstracted). More recently\, David has shot with Olympus cameras focused on intimate landscape compositions\, primarily in Virginia and eastern France. He joined NVPS in 2025. \n\n\n\nSince his retirement in 2021\, summers find David at his wife’s family home in eastern France composing intimate landscapes that often include the mist that travels over the region’s freshwater lakes\, limestone cliffs\, hilly farmlands and pine forests. Like other photographers\, David uses mist to simplify his compositions and isolate subjects. He also uses it to intensify the atmosphere and create a mood. Sometimes mist itself is the subject of his photographs. In this gallery\, David presents a selection of photos\, some drawn from his 2025 portfolio\, that use these techniques to show the many moods of mist in Eastern France

DESCRIPTION:Photo by Brian Rodriguez\n\n\n\nDuring his high school years\, David Kravitz had his own dark room and enjoyed exploring black and white film photography. Then life intervened. After college\, graduate school\, and a 40-year academic career\, he has returned to photography\, as he always intended\, though he has left film for digital. He joined NVPS in 2019 and is immensely grateful for all he has gained from his membership. \n\n\n\nDescription of presentationDavid’s photographic interests are diverse\, but portrait photography is not an emphasis. He has chosen to present his photographs of people – drawn primarily from his travels or local public events – with the hope that this experience will help him overcome his hesitancy to ask strangers if he can photograph them.

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In Person): Faroe Islands―The Other Danish Territory with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:The Faroes are an archipelago of 18 islands about halfway between Iceland and Norway formed by volcanic eruptions and shaped by multiple ice ages. They were settled by Norsemen in the 800’s. Current residents have eked out a living by fishing\, farming\, and raising sheep in an environment with lots of rain and wind but with a relatively mild climate thanks to the Gulf Stream. It has one “big” city\, Tórshavn (the capital)\, one airport\, and a remarkable infrastructure of roads\, tunnels\, and ferries making it easy to get around.  It has been an autonomous territory of Denmark since 1814. The population is around 50\,000 with half in Tórshavn and the rest scattered around the shoreline in villages. Tourism is on the rise because of the incredible beauty of the sharp ridges\, verdant valleys with hundreds of streams\, and villages with a mix of very old and new homes.  It’s a landscape photographer’s paradise. \n\n\n\nWayne will discuss how he and Judy planned their trip to the Faroe Islands on their own\, a trip easily done over about 5 days with a rental car. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid–1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work. In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired to travel and shoot with wife Judy. In the “Be There; Shoot” philosophy Wayne has subjects associated with wherever he is (e.g. when on African safaris\, photograph animals)\, but his natural style is heavily weighted towards subjects with graphic content; patterns and lines\, geometry\, reflections\, fragments\, and abstracts.  \n\n\n\nWayne joined NVPS in 2015 and was Co–VP for Competitions in 2023–2024. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 30 years\, including MAPV 2021–2024\, and placed in many NVPS monthly competitions.   He shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight of the kit became problematic\, leading him to switch to the micro–four–thirds system in 2014. He uses two OM System bodies and two Olympus lenses ( 12–40mm f2.8 and 40–150mm f4). He increasingly uses the iPhone camera as well.

SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) Theme - Patterns with Judge Tillman Crane
DESCRIPTION:Tillman’s love for the platinum print began in 1976 at the Frederick Evans’ exhibit in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was 1990 before life allowed him to begin his journey to becoming a master of the process. The platinum print continues to be his photographic medium of expression and his understanding of the materials continues to deepen in creating his works of beauty. \n\n\n\nIn 1996 he took a job at the Waterford School (Sandy\, Utah) and was tasked with building a photography program for grades 8-12. 2001 provided an opportunity for him to bring his family back to Maine\, setting up Tillman Crane Photography as a fine art photographer and workshop teacher. \n\n\n\nHe has taught workshops in Mexico\, Scotland\, England\, Canada\, China\, and Japan as well as over 100 workshops in the United States. In addition to his own branded workshops he has led workshops for the Maine Media Workshops\, Visionary Wild Workshops\, Santa Fe Workshops\, Peters Valley School of Craft\, Coupeville Art Center and Inversnaid Photography Center. \n\n\n\nTillman has frequently written on the craft of photography\, with twenty articles for View Camera Magazine and other pieces in Photo Technique\, Silver Shotz and the Ilford Photo Instructor Newsletter.  \n\n\n\nAfter 35 years of working solely with film and large format cameras he has enthusiastically embraced the digital world. Tillman is enjoying the versatility of traveling more lightly and the ability to make ever bigger negatives for his prints. \n\n\n\nTwo of his highest professional achievements include his solo\, one hundred platinum print exhibit\, Alchemy of Light (2016)\, at the National Art Museum of China (Beijing) and his induction into the inaugural class of the Artist Hall of Fame in the Alabama Center for the Arts. \n\n\n\nTillman continues to find joy in creating and teaching photography while being blessed to live in Maine. \n\n\n\nFor more information about Tillman’s photography\, books and workshops\, see his web site TillmanCrane.com

SUMMARY:Education & Training: (In Person) Final Portfolio Review Group 1 with Frank Van Riper
DESCRIPTION:The final review for group one of the Portfolio Project will be held with Frank Van Riper on Tuesday\, April 14. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Van Riper is an award-winning documentary and fine art photographer\, journalist\, author and lecturer whose work has been published internationally.  \n\n\n\nHis photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery (Washington\, DC) as well as in the Portland Museum of Art (Portland\, Maine.) His 1998 book of photography and essays\, Down East Maine/A World Apart\, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the silver award for photography from the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington.  \n\n\n\nHis latest book\, written with his wife Judith Goodman\, and their first book in color\, The Green Heart of Italy – Umbria and its Ancient Neighbors was published very recently.  His previous book\, Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980\, immediately became an Amazon bestseller.  Also done in collaboration with his wife and professional partner Judith Goodman\, was Serenissima: Venice in Winter\, a coffee table collection of black and white photographs and essays\, published in 2008 both in the US and Italy.  \n\n\n\nVan Riper was a member of the New York Daily News Washington Bureau for 20 years\, serving as White House correspondent\, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. He was a 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard. In 1982 he partnered with his wife in commercial and documentary photography. In 1992\, Van Riper became photography columnist of the Washington Post\, where his column\, “Talking Photography\,” appeared for 19 years. It now is now available at www.TalkingPhotography.com.  \n\n\n\nA popular teacher and lecturer\, Van Riper is on the faculty of PhotoWorks at Glen Echo Park\, Md.\, and has lectured and/or taught in the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program\, the Maine Photographic Workshops\, the University of Maine at Machias and at other colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic.
