SUMMARY:Competition: (Zoom) Theme: Industrial with Judge Russ Young
DESCRIPTION:I began photography as the high school yearbook photographer using a 4×5 Speed Graphic; the very definition of immersion. My senior year\, I worked after school as the darkroom monkey for a commercial & industrial photographer. These experiences still shape my imagery as I still shoot film and large format. I taught for The University of Texas at Austin and Ohio Wesleyan University. My specialties are the history of Pictorialism and 19th century printing methods. \n\n\n\nSaint Andrews University (Scotland) granted me a Ph.D. in art history for my dissertation on soft focus lenses and Pictorialism. file:///C:/Users/russ/Downloads/WRussellYoungPhDThesis.pdf (warning: reading it has been known to induce narcolepsy).  \n\n\n\nThe Royal Photographic Society denominated me as a Fellow about 20 years ago. \n\n\n\nLiving for 18 years on an isolated farm near The Blue Ridge\, landscapes have been the primary subject of my cameras. Although I capture the landscape with both film and digital\, the vast majority of my images are black & white. Impossible to avoid\, I use PhotoShop and its ilk minimally. My photographs have been viewed in both one-person exhibitions and group shows.

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nDavvid Kravitz\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDuring his high school years\, David Kravitz had his own dark room and enjoyed exploring black and white film photography. Then life intervened. SUMMARY:Members’ Forum (In Person) - Blur with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Perlow\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for over 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens and bathrooms.  He is presently actively involved in commercial real estate investment. \n\n\n\nHe began taking photographs seriously around 2013\, and has been a member of NVPS since 2018.  His favorite genres are conceptual\, landscape\, and portrait.  Always looking to grow as a photographer\, he enjoys learning\, studying\, and experimenting with new ways to express ideas visually. \n\n\n\nGary has won awards for his photography\, including a national best-in-show in monochrome in 2024 from the Photographic Society of America\, two best-in-shows from Nature Visions/MAPV in 2019 and 2022 (as well as in a variety of categories)\, and the NVPS’s Ollie Fife award in 2022. \n\n\n\nHe has been exhibiting photographs in galleries around the country and in Barcelona\, Spain. He currently is participating in a group show at the Carter Burden Gallery in Manhattan. \n\n\n\nBlur: \n\n\n\nBlur in photography is something we have always experienced many times – but it is not always a flaw: it can be a powerful tool for expressing emotion and creativity.  By intentionally incorporating blur\, photographers can enhance the storytelling aspect of their images and create mystery\, as well.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In Person) (Prints) - Some of My Favorite Prints with Philip Winters
DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nPhilip Winters\n\n\n\nPhil began taking pictures as a kid with an old family camera. Through his teens and after high school\, he had a series of SLRs\, including one of his father’s older rangefinders. Fast forwarding\, Phil has had various digital cameras and now uses a Sony 6300 and 6600\, which he’s very happy with. He also keeps a Nikon point-and-shoot in his car\, just in case\, and of course has his phone ready for any photo emergencies. \n\n\n\nHe is very glad he joined NVPS many years ago—so long ago\, he says\, that it feels like forever\, but in a good way. Through the club\, he has learned a great deal\, including better composition\, enough Lightroom to feel almost comfortable\, and\, thanks to demonstrations at meetings\, how to mat his prints.    \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nPhil’s prints this evening show his wide range of photographic interests and techniques: reflections\, architecture\, machinery\, ICM\, panning.  He continues to hone his craft. \n\n\n\nAll photos taken by Philip Winters:

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In-Person) - Photographing the American Trackside with Suzy McIntire
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzy McIntire joined NVPS in 2019\, and is club secretary for 2026-27. She shoots primarily with a Fuji X-T5\, and loves her 17-40mm f/1.8 Sigma lens. Suzy enjoys street photography— capturing little-noticed moments in everyday life and the humor that sometimes comes with it. She’s also partial to human-created vernacular landscapes. For several years she has been photographing from moving vehicles\, usually trains\, as a way of finding otherwise-inaccessible scenery and higher vantage points\, always to discover what people are doing in their particular worlds.  \n\n\n\nAlabama \n\n\n\nIn her presentation\, Suzy will show landscape photos of the U.S. taken from 18 different Amtrak trains (such as the Empire Builder\, Sunset Limited\, Coast Starlight\, Crescent\, Floridian\, and Southwest Chief) through 35 states\, and answer questions about shooting from moving vehicles. She’ll display a silicone lens hood for keeping reflections off the window glass\, and describe how to deal with dirty windows and motion blur. And\, of course\, there will be a few photos of trains and everyone can ask about long-distance train travel! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDescription of the Presentation:  Photographing the American Trackside  \n\n\n\n“You can still see the iconic American landscape from the train\,” Suzy says\, “fantastic agricultural scenes in particular. But much of the trackside is marvelously decayed\, slow to change\, and regional.” She finds it a more interesting\, less-homogenized America.  \n\n\n\n\nArizona\n\n\n\nCalifornia\n\n\n\nFlorida

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In Person - Digital) - What Do I See with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Since joining NVPS in 2015\, Wayne’s multiple presentations of his work has included images in about every genre\, but he remains a fine art photographer at heart.  His images often highlight his interest in patterns\, lines\, and geometric content like curves\, circles\, and triangles.  But there’s more to Wayne’ssubject interests\, which he’ll show in this presentation. It is a collection of work he particularly likes from the past five years\, mixed together on purpose and including a few images he may have shown in digital competitions or on his Facebook feed.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWayne began his photography avocation in the late 1960s and became increasingly involved with Fine Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in two local art galleries and The Art League of Alexandria presented many opportunities to create new work for his pleasure and competitions. Joining NVPS in 2015 added both camaraderie and more opportunities for presenting new work.  He has been fortunate to travel widely with his wife Judy\, which is a trigger to follow his basic photography rule; “Be There; Shoot.” \n\n\n\nWayne has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 30 years\, including MAPV 2021-2024\, and placed in many NVPS monthly competitions.   He uses two OM System bodies and two Olympus lenses (24-40mm f2.8 and 40-150mm f4) and\, increasingly\, the iPhone camera.

SUMMARY:Programs (Zoom) - The Power of Colour in Photography with Sharon Tenenbaum
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Tenenbaum\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nSharon Tenenbaum defines herself as an artist working within the medium of photography. The artistic process is paramount in every creation she completes. She always aspires to ‘show reality in a different way’\, creating images rather than capturing them. Sharon \n\n\n\n is constantly challenging herself: whether experimenting with bicycle parts to create composite cityscapes or painting selective overlays onto her images. She is committed to the artistic process of growth and change in the continuous pursuit of novelty.  \n\n\n\nSharon was educated as a Civil Engineer. Her love for structures is reflected in a vast body of work that celebrates more than mere architecture\, but rather\, the Art of Architecture. \n\n\n\nAs an artist\, Sharon has won numerous international photography awards and has been published in esteemed magazines such as National Geographic. As an educator\, Sharon has taught group workshops from New York to Melbourne\, as well as on-line workshops and courses. She has a variety of video tutorials and  ebooks and is the founder of Talk-&-Learn\, a free one-hour weekly Zoom session for image critique and creation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSharon’s info: \n\n\n\nSharon TenenbaumFINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER | EDUCATOR | AUTHOR | ENGINEERsharon@sharontenenbaum.comwww.SharonTenenbaum.comWebsite | Facebook | Instagram– \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nColour is one of the most powerful storytelling tools available to a photographer. In this presentation\, we’ll explore how colour harmony\, saturation\, and brightness influence the mood\, emotion\, and impact of an image. You’ll learn why some colour combinations feel pleasing while others create tension\, and how subtle adjustments in post-processing can completely transform the way a photograph is perceived. \n\n\n\nThe goal of this presentation is to help participants become more intentional in their use of colour—both in-camera and during post-processing. By the end of the session\, you’ll have a deeper understanding of colour theory\, practical techniques for enhancing your images\, and the confidence to use colour as a creative tool to strengthen your photographic vision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChicago 2022

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In-Person) - Creating a Watercolor Painting Effect in Photoshop with Ilenia Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:Description: \n\n\n\nIlenia Alvarez will transform a regular photograph into a watercolor painting using Adobe Photoshop. The process involves applying a series of editing techniques that simplify photographic details\, create the appearance of brush strokes\, soften edges\, enhance colors\, and add the texture of watercolor paper. Each step is designed to imitate the characteristics of traditional watercolor painting while using Photoshop’s digital tools. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker’s Bio: \n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Ilenia began a photographic voyage\, initially captivated by the dynamic energy of urban landscapes and the candid moments found in street photography. Through her lens\, Ilenia has captured life’s spontaneous moments\, crafting images that tell stories of time and place. Yet\, as her journey unfolded\, a transformation occurred\, leading Ilenia to the delicate and mesmerizing world of bird photography. \n\n\n\nIlenia joined NVPS in 2018. In the 2019-2020 club year\, Ilenia was awarded Digital Photographer of the Year in the Novice category. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person - Print) Hawaii with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:As an architect and design/construction manager for the past 45 years\, photography has always been an integral part of Jim’s career\, starting with a small darkroom in the College of Architecture during the early 70’s. Subsequently\, he progressed from a tiny darkroom over a clothes dryer to a fully equipped facility for work; from a 4×5 view camera and finally into the digital age. Jim’s work has been published in several issues of Black and White Magazine and LensWork\, and shown in hanging exhibits in California and Chicago.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter moving from southern California to Virginia to be closer to family\, he joined NVPS in 2019 and has enjoyed its comaraderie and friendships. Travel photography has also been and remains a favorite part of the trips he has taken over the years\, of which his five trips to the Hawaiian Islands were most memorable. He spent much of his time there hiking ocean side trails\, exploring the jungle-like forests\, viewing the islands from helicopters\, throwing snowballs at top of Mauna Kea\, and rising at 4:30 am to see a volcano at sunrise. The photographs he is showing depict the great photographic opportunities the islands offer.

A Master Craftsman\, Master of Artistry\, and Master of Photography (PPA)\, she weaves wonder from pixels and light\, balancing science and soul as only a true alchemist of imagery can. SUMMARY:Beanetics Exhibit Reception: Pareidolia by Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Duration: September 8\, 2026 at 8:00 to October 13\, 2026 at 5:00 pm \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement: \n\n\n\npareidolia is the psychological term for the normal tendency to see  familiar objects  such as faces or animals\, in water\,  clouds\, rocks\, or shadows.  While our brains may be trying  to find familiar shapes\, we don’t all see the same things in the same situations .   \n\n\n\n My imagination sometimes shows me something I would like to share.  But how cane this be done in a photograph?   You may not  see exactly what I see\, and the camera probably won’t see an imagined animal at all. With the help of Photoshop\,  this is my attempt to find these critters and  show them to you \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBeanetics Coffee Roasters – 7028 Columbia Pike\, Annandale\, VA 22003

SUMMARY:Education & Training (In-Person) - WILD: Four Principles for Better Bird Photography with Shawn Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShawn Thomas is a Virginia-based nature and wildlife photographer with a street photography approach to birds. Perpetually underprepared\, slightly disheveled\, and making it work with whatever flies by. He shoots mostly in local parks and forgotten edges\, usually while lying in something wet and reconsidering his choices. His work has been recognized by Amateur Photographer of the Year\, the reFocus Awards\, Virginia Wildlife\, the Piedmont Environmental Council\, and others\, and he’s self-published three photo books\, two of them zines. He’s a Nikon shooter\, a committed tripod hater\, and his best shooting partner is his ten-year-old daughter\, who spots the birds long before he does. He writes weekly at blog.shawnthomas.art about trips\, photography tips\, and what works and what doesn’t. What he’s found after all of it is that he’s never really photographing the animal. He’s photographing light\, atmosphere\, and moment. The bird is just the punctuation mark. \n\n\n\nProgram Intro: \n\n\n\nIt has never been easier or cheaper to get into wildlife photography\, and there is way more around you than you think. You just have to look for it. In this talk Shawn walks through WILD: Watch\, Illuminate\, Level\, and Depth. Four principles for making bird photos that feel like more than a record shot\, covering behavior and anticipation\, working with (and occasionally faking) light\, why perspective matters more than almost anything else\, and how to make your background do real work. He’ll also get into the practical stuff\, including settings\, glass\, and why you shouldn’t be afraid of high ISO\, plus a few examples of what happens when you get all four right and what happens when you don’t. Fair warning: it involves getting dirty.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: “Smorgasbord”
DESCRIPTION:NVPS August 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\n“Smorgasbord” \n\n\n\nLet’s try something different this month! Our normal field trip often explores a single location or venue in depth\, with time to ponder\, photograph\, and explore in detail. Very good for single locations with multiple things to photograph. This month you are invited to sample several smaller venues or locations where there may be only one or a few great views – a “Smorgasbord” where you choose locations from the list below that interest you. Or think of it as a “sampler”. Start anytime 6:00 AM or later at a location of your choosing; End at Panera Bread on Elden Street in Herndon about 10:00 AM. At Panera we will grab a snack or drink and share with each other how the morning went along with a few of our “finds” from our cameras and phones. \n\n\n\nFor those of us that are adventurous and are willing to get started early we have identified sites that could provide excellent “Pre-Sunrise” (6:00 AM–6:34 AM). For the rest we have “Sunrise/Golden Hour” (6:34 AM–7:35 AM) and “Later Morning” (after 7:35 AM) for your reference. \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, 29-Aug-2026 6:00 AM (or later) to 10:00 AM. \n\n\n\nPost-Shoot Meeting Location: \n\n\n\nPanera Bread;10:00 AM; 460 Elden St\, Herndon\, VA 20170 \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nArlington to Herndon Corridor – You choose your own locations and route. There are multiple photographic and equipment strategies from bringing a single camera and lens to putting your “kit” in the back of the car and choosing different equipment at different locations. Smartphone photographers will find lots of different opportunities to use anything from “basic and simple” JPEG images to trying out those new “pro” or “advanced” modes and RAW capabilities. \n\n\n\n● For Sunrise shooting you may want a tripod \n\n\n\n● To capture morning “sun stars” any lens used with a small aperture (at least f11\, preferably f16 to f32) is useful \n\n\n\nLocation Details \n\n\n\nTime Key: \n\n\n\n• Pre-Sunrise = 6:00–6:34 AM \n\n\n\n• Sunrise/Golden Hour = 6:34 AM–7:35 AM \n\n\n\n• Later Morning = after 7:35 AM \n\n\n\n• Ratings: Excellent\, Good\, Poor \n\n\n\nBon Air Rose Garden \n\n\n\nFeatures: Memorial Rose Garden; Flowers; Macro; Ornamental and Teaching Gardens \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Poor | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Excellent | Later Morning: Poor \n\n\n\nAddress: 850 N Lexington St\, Arlington\, VA 22205 \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at the above address \n\n\n\nApple: https://maps.apple.com/?q=850%20N%20Lexington%20St%2C%20Arlington%2C%20VA%2022205 \n\n\n\nGoogle: https://maps.google.com/?q=850%20N%20Lexington%20St%2C%20Arlington%2C%20VA%2022205 \n\n\n\nCherry Hill Farmhouse \n\n\n\nFeatures: Historic Farmhouse; Greek Revival Architecture; Mid-19th-Century Barn; Park Landscape \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Good | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Excellent | Later Morning: Good \n\n\n\nAddress: 312 Park Ave\, Falls Church\, VA 22046 \n\n\n\nParking: On-street parking in front of Cherry Hill Farmhouse\, or Falls Church Government Center lots on Little Falls Street \n\n\n\n Apple Maps \n\n\n\n Google Maps \n\n\n\nColvin Run Mill \n\n\n\nFeatures: Historic Working Mill; Miller’s House; General Store; Millrace and Water Features; Wooded Grounds \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Good | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Good | Later Morning: Good \n\n\n\nAddress: 10017 Colvin Run Rd\, Great Falls\, VA 22066 \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at the above address \n\n\n\n Apple Maps \n\n\n\nGoogle Maps \n\n\n\nHendry House and Gardens \n\n\n\nFeatures: Historic House; Victorian Architecture; Gardens; Civil War Earthworks; Meadow and Mature Trees \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Good | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Excellent | Later Morning: Good \n\n\n\nAddress: An exact address that navigation systems can use was difficult to identify\, so instead the Latitude/Longitude is provided\, along with text directions from Eastbound I66 \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at 38.901334\, -77.088162 \n\n\n\nApple Maps \n\n\n\nGoogle Maps \n\n\n\nDirections from Eastbound I66: \n\n\n\n• Follow I66 Eastbound \n\n\n\n• Take exit 72 for US-29/Langston Blvd toward Spout Run Pkwy \n\n\n\n• Turn right onto US-29 N/Langston Blvd \n\n\n\n• Turn left onto N Spout Run Pkwy \n\n\n\n• Continue on Lorcom Ln to your destination \n\n\n\n• Turn left onto Lorcom Ln \n\n\n\n• Turn right onto N Edgewood St \n\n\n\n• Turn right onto 24th St N \n\n\n\n• Pass the Service Entrance to Hendry House \n\n\n\n• Turn left into the parking lot \n\n\n\nHerndon Depot Museum\, Historic Herndon \n\n\n\nFeatures: Historic Railroad Depot; Railroad History; Caboose; Historic Streetscape; W&OD Trail Corridor \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Excellent | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Good | Later Morning: Good \n\n\n\nAddress: Parking for both locations at 731 Station St\, Herndon\, VA 20170 \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at the above address \n\n\n\nApple Maps \n\n\n\nGoogle Maps \n\n\n\nLake Anne Plaza \n\n\n\nFeatures: Mid-Century Modern Architecture; Waterfront Plaza; Public Art; Fountain; Reflections; Streetscape \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Excellent | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Good | Later Morning: Excellent \n\n\n\nAddress: 1609 Washington Plaza N\, Reston\, VA 20190 \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at the above address \n\n\n\n Apple Maps \n\n\n\n Google Maps \n\n\n\nAccess: Go through retail area to find Lake Anne \n\n\n\nMarine Corps War Memorial & Netherlands Carillon \n\n\n\nFeatures: Memorial; Netherlands Carillon; Formal Grounds; Lincoln Memorial\, Washington Monument\, and U.S. Capitol Views; Sunrise Skyline \n\n\n\nTime: Pre-Sunrise: Excellent | Sunrise/Golden Hour: Excellent | Later Morning: Good \n\n\n\nAddress: An exact address that navigation systems can use was difficult to identify\, so instead the Latitude/Longitude is provided along with text directions from Eastbound Route 50. \n\n\n\nParking: Parking lot at 38.890368\, -77.071210 \n\n\n\nApple Maps \n\n\n\nGoogle Maps \n\n\n\nDirections from Eastbound US 50: \n\n\n\n• Follow US Rt 50 Eastbound \n\n\n\n• Take the N Rolfe St exit \n\n\n\n• Follow Arlington Blvd Service Road past several streets. SUMMARY:Beanetics Exhibit Reception: The Colors of Death Valley by Anita Feidler
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Duration: August 4\, 2026 at 8:00 am – September 8\, 2026 at 5:00 pmArtist Statement \n\n\n\nSunrise at Zabriskie Point\, Death Valley NP\, CA\n\n\n\n“As I drove down Highway 190 in the middle of a December day\, I saw a parched\, washed-out landscape. I began to wonder why I chose to visit this desolate place where landmarks are named to evoke hell or the devil.  \n\n\n\nBut at the crack of dawn and as the sun set\, I observed the beauty of Death Valley. I witnessed the play of golden light and blue shadows on wind-sculpted sand dunes. I followed the quickly moving alpenglow as it cast shades of rose\, violet\, and orange across badlands and rugged mountains. And I observed the patterns and jagged formations that reflected the many colors of sunrise and sunset in salt springs and vast salt flats. \n\n\n\nBy the end of my trip\, I found Death Valley to be a place of unique beauty and diverse\, colorful landscapes.” \n\n\n\n– Anita Feidler \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nBeanetics Coffee Roasters – 7028 Columbia Pike\, Annandale\, VA 22003

SUMMARY:July 2026 Field Trip - Smithsonian Castle and Museums
DESCRIPTION:Image by George Bradshaw\n\n\n\nNOTE: Originally scheduled for July 18\, in response to the poor air quality in the area and understanding there is still a chance for poor air quality Saturday morning\, we are postponing the July field trip one week to Saturday 25-Jul-2026. \n\n\n\nSmithsonian Castle and Museums\n\n\n\nFor July\, often the hottest month in our area\, we will explore the Smithsonian Castle and the Arts and Industries Building. Both buildings are open this summer\, allowing access during their extended renovations. \n\n\n\nSmithsonian “Castle”\n\n\n\n(From the Smithsonian Web Site) “Completed in 1855\, the Castle is our signature building. Amidst its first major renovation in more than 50 years\, part of the first floor is open through September 7\, 2026\, for Our Shared Future: 250 programming to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday.” \n\n\n\nArts and Industries Building\n\n\n\n(Again\, from the Smithsonian Web Site) “The Arts and Industries Building is the Smithsonian’s second oldest building. Arts and Industries opened in 1881 as the country’s first U.S. National Museum\, an architectural icon in the heart of the National Mall. Its soaring halls introduced millions of Americans to wonders about to change the world—Edison’s lightbulb\, the first telephone\, Apollo rockets. Over the years\, Arts and Industries has been the origin and incubator for almost every other Smithsonian museum\, debuting everything from dinosaurs to rocket ships. To celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary\, the Arts and Industries Building is open through September 7\, 2026\, hosting the Voices and Votes traveling exhibition.” \n\n\n\nWithin an easy walk are the Hirshorn Museum\, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History\, and other Smithsonian Museums. \n\n\n\nAdditional Information:• Smithsonian Institution Building (The Castle) | Smithsonian Institution• Arts and Industries Building | Smithsonian Institution• Smithsonian Museums and Zoo | Smithsonian Institution \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 18\, 2026\, from 9:00 AM to Noon.We will meet at the Enid A. Haupt Garden near the Smithsonian Castle. \n\n\n\nPost Field Trip Snacks: \n\n\n\nFor any that wish to join for post-picture refreshments\, there is the Castle Café Summer Shack 250. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nMeet at the Enid A. Haupt Garden\, near the Smithsonian Castle.• Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ygs6CQg5r38UBmgr6• Street Address: 1050 Independence Ave SW\, Washington\, DC 20560Metro is often the best way to get to the Smithsonian on the National Mall. Travel to the “Smithsonian” station on the Orange\, Blue\, or Silver line: Trip Planner | WMATA Rider Tools \n\n\n\nCost: \n\n\n\nAdmission is free. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n• Your normal “walk-about” (24-70\, 24-105) will likely suffice• For inside exhibits you may find a fast lens (f2.8) helpful• A mid-telephoto lens can be useful for indoor subjects you cannot approach closely \n\n\n\nTripods\, monopods\, and selfie sticks are NOT allowed in Smithsonian museums and gardens. \n\n\n\nRemember\, field trips are an ideal opportunity to try lenses and techniques that you are not familiar with! An ultra-wide-angle lens in the garden\, or a long telephoto. Field trips can also be an opportunity to bring just one camera and lens\, or perhaps just your cell phone. Some of us find we approach our picture selection differently\, with better results than we expected. Don’t forget\, even with a single piece of equipment almost all of us have the “two-foot” zoom where we use our two feet to move closer and “zoom in”\, or further away and “zoom out”. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Seton Dropper \n\n\n\nAdditional images: \n\n\n\nImage by George Bradshaw\n\n\n\nImage by Seton Droppers

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Upperville Colt & Horse Show & Lunch at Stan's
DESCRIPTION:NVPS June 2026 Field Trip \n\n\n\nThis event is so much fun that we’re continuing a club tradition! Please join us in the beautiful Virginia countryside for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. Established in 1853\, it is the oldest horse show in America. There are multiple areas of competition with beautiful horses and riders of all ages. In addition to the main attraction there are artisans and other vendors and great people-watching. \n\n\n\nMore information about the show can be found here: https://www.upperville.com \n\n\n\nAnd after the show Stan Bysshe generously invited us for lunch and socializing at his home in Marshall\, VA. He will also welcome club members who would like to attend the lunch without going to the horse show.  \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday June 6\, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (horse show) and 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. (lunch). (The horse show starts at 7:30 a.m. and generally goes until late in the afternoon\, so feel free to arrive early.) \n\n\n\nNO Rain date this year. \n\n\n\nRSVP: \n\n\n\nKindly email nvps-field-trips@googlegroups.com by Tuesday June 2\, 2026\, if you plan to join us for lunch at Stan’s house\, and let us know how many people are in your party. This is to give Stan a rough idea of how many guests he can expect.  \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nUpperville Colt & Horse Show \n\n\n\n8300 John S. Mosby Highway \n\n\n\nUpperville\, VA \n\n\n\nParking is at the far end of the showgrounds. See the map below for the parking marked as “General Admission.” There should be law enforcement on the street to direct you if needed.  We will meet near Gate 2 (also marked on the map). \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nYou will be shooting subjects both near and far\, so either a long-range lens (28-300\, for example) or two lenses (24-70 and 70-200\, or ideally 300mm+\, for example) would serve you well. \n\n\n\n*No flash photography is permitted \n\n\n\nIt may be hot and sunny\, so bring water and sun protection \n\n\n\nThere are porta-potties throughout the showgrounds. \n\n\n\nHere is a map of the showgrounds: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Seton Droppers and Christopher FedorchakField Trip Coordinators \n\n\n\nPhotographs from the 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\nImage by David Kravitz\n\n\n\nImage by Deb Rose\n\n\n\nImage by Ying Li\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:End-of-Year Competition Awards (In Person) with Judge Ben Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Ben Greenberg\n\n\n\nBen Greenberg is a lifelong resident of Virginia and the cities of Richmond and Charlottesville. His passion for photography began in 1970 with the birth of his first son and for 56 years he has pursued his commitment to capturing images from the natural world in Virginia and 20 other states across the nation\, including 20 national parks. \n\n\n\nBen’s carefully crafted landscape photographs have won local and national awards and competitions including the international grand prize of Kodak’s newspaper competition\, KINSA. His photographs have been exhibited in numerous individual and group shows. His landscape and wildlife images are currently represented in several Virginia galleries and shops\, especially C’ville Arts\, a cooperative gallery on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  \n\n\n\nTaking great pride in creating photographic images of the highest quality in color and black and white\, Ben uses the best of traditional and digital technology in creating and printing his photographs. His photographic prints and all materials used in their presentation meet the highest archival quality standards for a lifetime of enjoyment. \n\n\n\nBen thoroughly enjoys teaching classes and workshops and mentoring individuals in their quest to improve their photography skills and decision-making. He is also very active in making presentations of his landscape and wildlife images to groups\, including camera clubs. His presentations include emphasis on Virginia images\, panoramic photography\, the importance of composition in images\, as well as his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. He hopes to photograph many other states in coming years. He is planning a trip to Alaska in 2027.   \n\n\n\nIn March 2014 Ben published his first photography book\, Natural Virginia.  A coffee table size book (10×17\, 240 pages and 122 images)\, Natural Virginia features panoramic color landscape and wildlife photographs from throughout the state\, celebrating its natural beauty and the need for its preservation. The book was marketed and distributed by the University of Virginia Press and cites the important work of nine statewide non-profit Virginia environmental organizations. There were three sold out printings of Natural Virginia and the more than 5\,000 printed copies. \n\n\n\nBen is now working on his second Virginia book focusing on the importance of the state’s national\, state\, regional\, and local natural public lands. The significant role that these public lands serve for the state’s residents and visitors was demonstrated throughout the Covid pandemic with the need for individuals and families to escape to the natural environment and away from the health dangers created by the virus. The benefits of the natural environment to the people of Virginia and the nation have been well documented.   \n\n\n\nBen’s photographs can be viewed on his two websites: \n\n\n\nwww.bengreenberg.com (900 landscape & wildlife images from Virginia and 20 other states) \n\n\n\nwww.naturalvirginiabook.com (Information and 30 of the 122 images from Natural Virginia)

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: (In Person): Denali with Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:Bio and Description\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 and has been active primarily with the club’s educational programs\, Education and Training\, Members Gallery and her favorite\, the Portfolio Project. She is also a past club president and is club rep for MAPV. \n\n\n\nAbout a dozen years ago Ginger and her husband Ron were in Alaska and took the train from Fairbanks to Anchorage. At the Denali stop she looked up at the impressive mountains and asked\, is that Denali? The answer was no\, Denali was above the clouds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout an hour later in the trip the conductor stopped the train and directed everyone to go to the right side and look back\, as the clouds covering Denali had cleared. The view of the distant mountain was still breathtaking\, and the desire to see it again was born. \n\n\n\nFast forward to 2025 and the opportunity finally realizes\, flying into Denali National Park to stay at Camp Denali and experience the beauty of this sub-arctic landscape firsthand. What followed was as memorable as anyone could wish. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll photos taken by Ginger Werz-Petricka:

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nRichard Distlerath\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStarting in grade school with a science project to build a pinhole camera\, Richard’s photography endeavors cascaded into a full darkroom where he developed and printed black & white images as well as processed color slides. Photography became lean during his New Jersey working years\, after which the digital age brought about a whole new learning curve. Richard credits Ralph Lee Hopkins from Nat Geo as his first mentor in the digital world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nRichard and his wife Linda have traveled the world to see the beauty of wildlife and of nature itself.  His slideshow depicts big cats\, birds\, class D killer whales\, the narwhal\, and other species in the Arctic and Antarctic\, Africa\, Iceland\, and North and South America. Some of his images show a pair of animals displaying typical behavior\, some present portraits. All are shown in their natural environment\, as Richards enjoys photographing wildlife perfectly adapted to its surroundings. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll images by Richard Distlerath:

DESCRIPTION:Members’ Gallery provides a forum for NVPS members to share ideas and images.  It aims to help club members think about their own body of work and various ways to see it.   \n\n\n\nSo\, for the last Members’ Gallery of the season on May 26\, 2026\, everyone in the club is invited to bring any printed material of their own images.  Books\, calendars\, greeting cards\, T-shirts\, puzzles\, mugs\, posters\, etc. are possible print formats. Images printed on traditional photo paper or other media such as wood\, metal\, canvas\, or something else\, framed or not: also welcome!  Printed images could be finished products\, or an idea in process.  \n\n\n\nAnother goal of this now-annual evening is to show how images can move from the computer to real life.  Sometimes a printed image\, no matter the medium\, evokes responses and reveals detail in addition to what a digital image can do. \n\n\n\nFor questions\, please contact Members’ Gallery coordinator Eva Lanyi at nvps-members-gallery@googlegroups.com.
