SUMMARY:Programs: Seeing Out of the Box: Abstract Photography Opportunities in the DC Area with E. David Luria
DESCRIPTION:Put your thumb and forefinger together into a small circle\, hold it up to one eye\, close the other eye. Look through that circle: that’s how your camera lens sees the world\, just a small\, tight area\, no peripheral vision.  \nAnd it is also the “secret sauce” of abstract photography technique\, which is the subject of E. David Luria’s presentation on September 7 entitled “Seeing Out of the Box: Abstract Photography Opportunities in the DC Area”. \nDavid maintains that unique abstract images surround us everywhere\, in our own backyard\, on the sidewalk\, in the ribbed patterns of a fallen leaf\, on tie-dye T-shirts\, in a stack of bicycles or nested chairs\, in rug patterns\, on mural art\, graffiti\, on wallpaper\, in glass reflections\, in stained glass windows\, and in art museums.  Abstract photography enhances our photo portfolios with  colorful\, wild and crazy images\, He also maintains it helps train our brains to think out of the box\, look at problems in new ways AND to come up with those clever “Aha!”  answers to crossword puzzle clues!  Best of all\, no special equipment is needed for abstract photography: a phone is fine! \nIn this Zoom talk David will show us examples of abstract shots he has done around the DC area\, explaining when and where he got the shots\, so that club members will be inspired to go out\, squinting through the circles of their thumbs and forefingers. to find similar jewels of art wherever they may be! \nDavid Luria is a professional architectural photographer and founder of the popular Washington Photo Safari program (www.washingtonphotosafari.com) . \nSince the program began in 1999\, David and his 11 fellow instructors have trained over 39\,200 amateur photographers from 50 states and 53 countries in 29 different areas of photography\, such as travel\, architecture\, nighttime\, portraits\, event\, street\, nature and wildlife photography and in Lightroom and Photoshop post-processing techniques.  Training an average of 5 photographers every day\, 365 days a year for 22+ years\, his 6\,000 small-group safaris have taken place in 186 different locations in 11 states\, 30 cities\, and 8 countries around the world\, including photo cruises in the Caribbean and in Europe. Several NVPS members have participated in his safaris \nDavid’s Washington Photo Safari has received hundreds of 5-star reviews on all major search engines\, and it benefits from high customer loyalty\, with about one-third of all his clients coming back as repeat customers\, year after year\, 750 of them participating in an average of 9 safaris apiece. In 2019 it was ranked among the top two Best Photography Services in the DC Area by the readers of City Paper. Trip Advisor now rates Washington Photo Safari at No. 3 out of 89 outdoor activities in Washington DC. \nBorn in Hamburg and raised in New York City\, David has lived in his adopted city of Washington DC for more than 50 years\, and so he claims to know where all the good pictures are! He has photographed over 3\,500 apartment\, hotel and restaurant properties in the DC area\, plus dozens of events and conventions\, and he is a frequent speaker at local camera clubs\, including ours. His work can be viewed at www.edavidluriaphotography.smugmug.com. \nAn honors graduate of Amherst College and a US Army veteran\, David is fluent in Spanish\, French\, German and English\, spent 32 years as a senior executive working for international non-profit organizations like CARE\, Inc\, worked 6 years in Colombia and Panama\,   and studied photography with a protégé of famed French photographer Henri Cartier- Bresson at the Parsons School of Design in Paris\, France. He claims his proudest achievements are his 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Programs: Psychology of Photography with Nic Stover
DESCRIPTION:Nic Stover created the Psychology of Photography as a way to help photographers think of ways to think beyond the basics of taking pictures and into the world of creating images. The Psychology of Photography explores 5 different areas that encompass the bigger part of the artistic and creative process. \nFirst\, we will look at Sensations and Perceptions which is how do we perceive the world and make order out of it\, we will also look at Beliefs and Creativity\, finding some of what we believe in and how do we create.  But no part of perceptions and beliefs are complete unless we look at Expression and Interpretation the parts of us that is about how do we interpret scenes and develop them (and ourselves) through processing. The final portion is about our Formulation and Evolution where we explore what kind of photographer\, we are\, want to be\, and where we are going. With the final piece being Reflection and Refinement of how we can put ourselves and our processes into a state of constant renewal. \nThrough our time together with Nic we will look at how are we drawn to patterns\, shapes\, lines\, and what do they mean to our subconscious. We will also explore some of the different schools of psychology and how the brain forms thoughts and how you can work with that\, examine some of the models of creativity and how we can look to follow and understand where we are in the creative process and understand that there are definable stages of our growth that we experience as photographers. \nAbout Nic Stover \nNic Stover was raised in the high mountains of Western Colorado on a single magazine subscription to National Geographic and only 5 television channels\, where the only shows his family regularly watched were Nature (PBS) and the Tour De France. It was here that his love for adventure\, the outdoors\, and photography took shape. \nStover is based in San Luis Obispo\, California and focuses on landscape photography classes and workshops encouraging his class participants to Develop their skills\, Explore their capabilities\, and to Create meaningful work. \nNic Stover Photography exists to help photographers understand the unique perspectives that assist in the discovery of their capabilities\, while enabling a deeper connection with themselves and others through creative expression.  Through his classes\, webinars\, tutorials\, and presentations Nic works with people of all ages\, backgrounds\, experiences\, and desires focused around a dialog on how we can thrive in our own unique creative and artistic process. \nHis landscape photography work has taken him across the globe — from the backcountry of Greenland\, to the windswept mountains of Patagonia\, and the frigid extremes of Alaska.  His portfolio of work encompasses desert\, ocean\, night\, and mountain photography.  Nic also enjoys showcasing the amazing the places that are unique to the Central Coast\, from sea caves to sand dunes\, and its dramatic coastal landscapes. \nAdditional information can be found at www.stoverphoto.com

SUMMARY:Programs: Chasing The Stars - Capturing The Night Sky with Robert Fawcett
DESCRIPTION:Chasing the Stars – Capturing the Night Sky – a visual presentation of capturing the Milky Way month by month highlighting the season from January to October. Emphasis is placed on the importance of planning to capture in camera a perceived nightscape for a star filled sky (composition). As part of the planning aspect\, Robert will discuss the apps for scouting locations\, positioning and time of day. He will also discuss choosing the right camera equipment\, lenses for a night of shooting along with various types of low-level lighting to employ on your night time experience. As a preface\, Robert will talk about various post-processing techniques to help make decisions on shooting methods for quality night sky images. \nRobert W. Fawcett (Bob) – Retired from 31 years of Government service\, 26 of those years as a Forensic / Scientific / Technical Photographer. Growing up in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania the interest in photography began early with his father taking the family on weekend drives through the country\, taking in the scenery down back roads never explored. Little did Robert know back then it would become a career that would take him on a journey to places around the globe. That journey began in Washington\, D.C. in October of 1985. As he continues the journey\, his plan is to share with others his passion for photography and pass along the experiences from the days of film to the current digital world. From the beginning and up until present Robert have always been a true believer of shooting in a manual mode\, using the three things of what photography is: ISO\, Aperture and Shutter. When mastered one can be in total control of light and the vision in your mind to capture the creative images you desire. \nAdditional information on Robert Fawcett can be found at one of the following links: \nFawcett Photography Adventures\nwww.meetup.com/Fawcett-Photography-Adventures/ \nFawcett Photography\nwww.facebook.com/rfawcettfoto/\nwww.instagram.com/rwfawcett/ \nFine Art America\nwww.rfawcett.com \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Programs: How to Shoot the Moon\, Fireworks\, Waterfalls\, and Snow with Marie Joabar
DESCRIPTION:Marie Joabar from the Capital Photography Center will present How to shoot the Moon\, Fireworks\, Waterfalls and Snow at NVPS’s December 1st program meeting. \nMarie Joabar has been immersed in photography and photography education for more than 20 years and is passionate about sharing her knowledge about photography\, cameras and digital technology with others. \nWhether she’s teaching photography\, helping one better understand their camera or “see” better compositions\, she works to build one’s confidence and take away the intimidation and sense of overwhelming that often accompanies learning new things. She finds just the right way to take complicated concepts and explain them in a logical\, easy to understand way. \nMarie founded Capital Photography Center in January 2012 to help those with a love of photography grow their skills and reach their goals – be it to capture better snapshots or become a professional photographer. To this end\, her company offers a wide variety of photography classes taught by professional photographers and renowned photographic educators where amateurs\, hobbyists and professionals can learn about the areas of photography suited to their interests and experience level. \nIn addition to running her business and teaching\, Marie finds time to enjoy her own photography and loves capturing people – both candid and posed\, country landscapes\, and dynamic cityscapes\, especially at nighttime.  Her travels have given her the opportunity to photograph in Venice\, Tuscany\, London\, New York and various other locations in the United States.  Her work can be viewed on her website at Marie Joabar Photographs \nOriginally from Michigan\, Marie has lived in Alexandria\, Virginia (outside of Washington DC) for the past 30+ years with her husband. \nThere are certain subjects that can be difficult to expose well such as the moon and snow. Marie will cover how to get proper exposures of each and will share tips to craft exciting shots of these subjects. \nMarie will also cover tips and techniques for capturing waterfalls as a silky flow and will cover the tools that make it easier to be more creative. She’ll also discuss how to freeze the fireworks display and capture it with multiple bursts in one frame.

SUMMARY:Program: Abstract Photography by Don Rosenberger
DESCRIPTION:Bio  \nDon Rosenberger sold all his camera gear and walked away from photography\, but that was back in 1983.  He picked up a camera again in 2005 and has spent most of his weekends and vacation time trying to make up for those years he walked away.   \nSince 2005 he has worked with and been mentored by a great group of well known and some not so well known photographers.   Today Don is still driven by the passion and the urge to always create something better and constantly strives to take his work to the next level.   \nDon served on the board of Nature Visions for 4 years before co-founding Road Runner Photography Tours in 2013.  After 6 years of incredible adventures at Road Runner\, he resigned in order to spend more time pushing his skills into new areas of photography.   \nPresentation Description \nIn this presentation Don will detail his journey into shooting abstracts\, discuss influences and provide suggestions for further study.   By using slower shutter speeds and camera motion we can create a new body of work that allows us to depart from reality. Abstract photography allows to take our art form into a more expressive direction.   With a little practice\, you may also find this to be a compelling form of expression.

SUMMARY:May 7\, 2019 - Programs: "Low Light Photography" with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Brian Zwit is a nature and outdoor photographer and educator based in northern Virginia. He loves to photograph the elegance and majesty of nature and he especially likes to photograph landscapes but avoids the well-known locations\, preferring instead the solitude of the backcountry. He looks for new and creative ways of presenting landscapes\, including photographing them on real and instant film and post-processing them in new ways\n\nWhile focusing on fine art nature photography\, Brian also enjoys other genres of photography and has photographed protests\, dogs\, and city and street life. His images are exhibited in private residences and corporate offices and have been used in regional magazines and for corporate and international publications.\n\nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic. Brain is an exceptional Lightroom instructor and he has had more than 750 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy to understand ways.\n\nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful but is always ready for a walk in the woods. They are collaborating on a children’s book tentatively called What’s Dingo Thinking?. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with photography and enjoy just being in nature.

SUMMARY:Programs: "Self Critiquing & Developing Your Style" by Alan Sislen
DESCRIPTION:Alan Sislen Bio:\nAs photographers\, we often find ourselves in the role of self-critiquer and evaluator. It’s clearly a case of learning by doing\, but there are many skills and techniques that can help us become better self-critiquers and evaluators of our own images\, and ultimately\, we will even become better photographers. \nFrequently you find yourself in situations where you will be evaluating and self-critiquing your images – making choices of images to submit to a competition or an exhibit; editing down hundreds\, or even thousands of images after a successful photo excursion or workshop; deciding which of your recent “favorites” are worth taking the extensive time and effort to thoroughly edit and print; deciding which of your images to include in the galleries on your website\, on Facebook\, or on Instagram.\nImage evaluation and self-critiquing are intertwined and challenging\, but it is a topic rarely discussed. We can become better at this unique skill with awareness and practice! Once you’ve narrowed down your selection to a “reasonable number\,” you’ll want to use those same skills to objectively evaluate each image for processing so that you are not just randomly trying different edits\, hoping you will end up with the ideal image? How do you look at your “raw” material to decide if the image has the potential\, with thoughtful processing\, to be the image you imagined? For image processing\, honing your skills of evaluation and self-critiquing are critical and will save you hours and hours of time.\nThis presentation will be filled with dozens and dozens of real images\, evaluations\, and decisions. Alan will lead you through his process and the techniques he uses to make this critically important\, but rarely discussed part of the photographic workflow come alive.

SUMMARY:Programs: "Portraits" with Catherine Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description\nCatherine is going to be sharing on the topic of Family and Child Photography. This is a broad topic ranging from formal family portraits to candid snapshots for the family album. Catherine will present information and ideas on how to capture images that embody both sentiment and artistry. You’ll learn how to improve your technical and artistic approach to photographing children of all ages. Catherine will break down the differences among portraiture\, lifestyle\, and snapshots and how to approach each one strategically and with intent. \nPerhaps you are a grandparent wanting to photograph your adorable\, but very busy toddler grandchild\, or you’re a parent trying to take your high school senior’s pictures for a graduation party invite. Maybe you are an aunt or uncle trying to document a family vacation at the beach\, or perhaps you are a retired hobbyist who is always being asked to take pictures at special family events and social gatherings. No matter what your specific need may be\, you are sure to walk away with a new level of understanding when it comes to photographing children and families in any context. \nBio\nCatherine is both a seasoned mom and photographer. She began her journey into photography after the birth of her sixth child in 2009. Her children’s ages range from 21 down to 9 years old. As a busy mom\, photography became a way for her to engage with her children\, enjoy her creative appetite for making art\, and document the fleeting years as they passed so quickly. After taking several photography classes at her local community college\, she realized that her hobby was quickly turning into an obsession. She spent the next five years photographing families and their children as a small business on the side. \nAfter moving to Vienna\, Austria in January of 2017\, Catherine decided to begin earning her Master’s in Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design through their e-learning program. While living in Vienna\, Catherine tasted the world of travel photography throughout Europe as well as taught workshops for the United Nations Photography Club.  She earned the first place in the 2017 UNPC Annual Photo Competition as well as in several monthly competitions. \nUpon returning to the States\, Catherine transitioned into the studio where she now is both a Fine Art and Commercial portrait photographer. Additionally\, Catherine teaches workshops on Beginning Portraiture\, Family and Child Photography\, and Editing Portraiture in Photoshop for Capital Photography Center. While her expertise is in the studio\, she continues to shoot families as well as educate others on the wonderful and most joyful experience of photographing children and their families. \n \n

SUMMARY:Programs: "B&W Photography" with Jim Steele
DESCRIPTION:Jim Steele \nWhile coming from a traditional film/darkroom background\, Jim is equally comfortable in both traditional and digital technologies.  His work includes landscape\, flowers\, figurative\, and surreal photography.  He has a studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria\, VA. His photographs are included in many corporate and private collections. \nHe has guest lectured in photography at Georgetown University and taught for the Art League in Alexandria Virginia\, the Smithsonian\, and Glen Echo’s Photoworks. He frequently lectures on the subject of visual literacy and darkroom and digital workflows. \nHe and his wife are members of the Photography Initiative at the National Gallery of Art in DC. \nJim’s interest (obsession) in flower photography started when he was walking to his car one day and noticed a tiger lily in the flower bed beside the driveway.  It was starting to wilt and he thought it was still beautiful.  He took it down to the studio to photograph\, and\, using focus stacking to overcome the shallow depth of field\, he ended up with a final focused digital file consisting of over a hundred stacked images. The rest is history.  \nMany of Jim’s favorite images are scenes he has been drawn to that most people might not photograph.  Jim calls them  “Images I Like\, But Nobody Else Will.” \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Program Meeting: Geometric Abstracts by Greg Holden
DESCRIPTION:Greg Holden is a photographer from Rockville\, MD who uses his photography to share with others his visions of the world. \nHe is an avid hiker and\, while most of his photos are from visits to National Parks\, some of his best photos are from outings closer to home. \nWhile Greg has enjoyed photographing many beautiful sunrises and grand landscapes\, he finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his creativity. Greg is always looking beyond the obvious and photographing the things that others might not even notice…like an acorn sprouting\, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile\, or patterns in the windblown sand of a local beach. \nGreg enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography.  He speaks and judges at clubs throughout the MD/VA area.  He also teaches classes through Capital Photography Center (capitalphotographycenter.com). \nYou can see Greg’s work on his website www.imagesunderfoot.com and follow him on Instagram @imagesunderfoot
