SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) An Illustrator's view of Landscape Photography with David Akoubian
DESCRIPTION:David started photographing in 1972\, mainly as an aid for his illustrating and paintings of nature. He found that the rewards of photographing were better than drawing or painting\, so he put down the pencils and brushes and continued with the camera and lens. In 1992 David decided to pursue photography as a profession. Since that date in addition to photographing he has taught classes and workshops around the US and Iceland. Currently he resides in the North Georgia Mountains in a place they call Bear Woods. Many of the bird images he creates are in his backyard which is a certified Wildlife Sanctuary. David’s work has appeared in many magazines and guide books\, and he volunteers his time and efforts to several conservation groups in Georgia as well as Wyoming. He is a Tamron Image Master\, an f-stop Gear Pathfinder\, and a Kase Filter Ambassador. \n\n\n\nIn this program you will learn how David approaches landscape photography while basing his compositions and vision from his days as an illustrator. He likes to use the same techniques that he worked with as a painter in his photography like incorporating elements to lead the viewer’s eye through the frame. David feels the quality of the light is critical to capture his vision and most of his images are done in a single frame simply utilizing great light. David will talk about the traditional “Rules” as well as why breaking them is so important. David will discuss photographing iconic locations\, then finding the “different” image as well. David will discuss settings and gear that is critical for capturing the image properly. Join David as he takes us on an inspirational trip through the landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Since its conception in 1839\, photography has experienced a continual shift in process and functionality. The evolution of the medium has brought us to our current shoreline of artistic definition where we not only can make stunning photographic art but also conceptualize ideas and convey meaning within photographs in unique ways.  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Cat Simmons will discuss conceptual aspects of photography and how the medium is rapidly evolving and redefining the way we think about photographs and the medium as a whole. As part of her discussion\, she will present her body of work Objet a || Unremembering in which she utilizes the materiality of the photograph alongside the use of language to alter the visual representation of past memory.  \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nCat Simmons\n\n\n\nCat Simmons is a Maryland native and an active member in the photo community.  She began her photo career in 2012 at Montgomery College in Rockville.  From there Cat went on to earn her MFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2021.  Her photo interests span multiple genres\, but her favorites are studio portraiture and conceptual work.  She has exhibited in several places including Montgomery College\, the Contact Photo Festival in Toronto\, Patch and Remington Gallery in Michigan\, and the United Nations Building when living abroad in Vienna\, Austria.  She is a member of the Silver Water Collective\, an all female group of SCAD graduates who joined talents to create\, collaborate\, and inspire others in their own photographic practices. \n\n\n\nWhen Cat isn’t in the studio\, she is teaching.  She teaches a variety of in-person and virtual classes for Praxis Gallery\, Salisbury University\, Frederick Community College\, and Santa Fe Workshops.  Cat also is an active member and chair for the North Bethesda Camera Club\, is a liaison for NBCC’s highschool outreach program\, and volunteers with the Potomac Community Resources offering photo critique for teens and adults with developmental differences. DESCRIPTION:TONE THEORY―The Principles of Tone \nDescription: You’ve seen them\, those images that make your jaw drop and leave you speechless.  They pull you in\, you are captivated by them\, and can’t stop looking at them.  They leave a plethora of emotions swirling around in your brain and you just can’t stop thinking about them.  But then\, you look through your portfolio and wonder\, “Why don’t my images have that same feeling?  Why doesn’t passion resonate in my photos?” The truth is that most people run toward color and over–saturation to try to achieve the same mood.  Color Theory is definitely powerful and knowing it can help you transform your images.  But there is something even more important that sets the stage for your colors―your tones!  In this presentation Blake is going to introduce you to his Tone Theories.  After this you will be able to look at an image and see almost immediately why it works or doesn’t based on tones alone. \nPhoto by Jeremy Ellsworth\nBio:  Blake Rudis is a 20–year retired USAF Combat Veteran and a classically trained artist who started as a painter.  Blake transitioned into printmaking and sculpture in which he received his BFA in Fine Art from the University of Delaware. His passion for art shifted when he finally decided to double down on his love for the American landscape.  In 2006 Blake took up photography\, but he incorporates his knowledge of aesthetics and color theory into his photography courses and is known for his acclaimed Photoshop® workflow.Blake is a self–published author and has worked as an independent photo educator for many software companies.   Some of his partnerships include Topaz Labs\, Plotagraph Pro\, and ON1. DESCRIPTION:Humans have been sharing stories since they first learned to speak. However\, how we tell those stories has changed over time. We started by painting our stories on the walls of caves and then learned to write and paint and later invented photography and filmmaking. Story Telling at 24 Frames Per Second will cover the advantages\, disadvantages\, and differences between still photography and filmmaking as well as why and how to incorporate filmmaking in your story telling. It’s a journey and\, if for nothing else\, one that will improve your still photography. \nBIO \nBrian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. \nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes\, and when filmmaking\, the human condition\, telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. While having his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic. Brain is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy to understand ways \nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking and just enjoy life.

DESCRIPTION:For his presentation\, Mark will talk about his time as a senior staff photographer with Nikon for more than 20-years\, how he was tasked with creating marking imagery for Nikon.  Mark’s last two award winning project were the showcase marketing adventures that were shown world-wide. These projects were to create UHD (4k) time Lapse for both the Nikon D850 and Z7 camera releases. Mark will break down how each project was shot\, from lens choice\, camera settings\, supporting gear\, as-well-as location choices and the apps he used to predict lighting and night skies. \nMark has been behind a camera for more than 40-years. He began his photography career in the US Navy documenting the Navy’s global operations as a Syracuse University trained photojournalist. Mark spent 20-years as a Navy Photojournalist traveling the world documenting historical military operations.  His efforts and talent were recognized through numerous awards\, including being awarded the prestigious Military Photographer of the Year.  After retiring from the Navy\, Mark spent 21-years working for Nikon Professional Services\, as a senior staff photographer. With Nikon he continued his passion for adventure\, travel and photography. Mark’s camera has taken him on expeditions to Everest Base Camp\, the Galapagos Islands\, the rugged coast of south & central America\, and deep into the jungles of the Amazon River basin.   With camera in hand\, Mark has covered 4 summer and 3 winter Olympics\, including being selected as an Olympic Venue Photo Manager for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In addition\, Mark’s focus has taken him to the sidelines of 5 World Cups\, 4 Super Bowls\, and numerous collegiate playoffs.  \nHis personal belief of –Giving back as freely as you were given– has allowed Mark to be a workshop leader for Defense Information School\, Nikon School\, Santa Fe Workshops\, Arizona Highways Magazine\, US DOD Military Workshops\, Lindblad Expeditions and Photography at the Summit Workshops.  For 23-years he has volunteered as the Lead Team Leader for the Eddie Adams Workshop\, an intense four-day gathering of top photography professionals\, along with 100-carelfully selected students. SUMMARY:Programs: Life in the Chesapeake Bay - Tangier Island\, a Visual Journey with Irene Sacilotto
DESCRIPTION:Irene’s presentation will explore the Tangier Islands\, Virginia located just south of the Maryland line\, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.  It is actually a series of small islands connected by narrow bridges spanning marshes and tidal creeks. From the mainland\, it can only be reached by boat or small plane.  On its narrow roads\, golf carts and bicycles replace cars as the primary mode of transportation.  It is a charming community of shop owners and waterman\, with many inhabitants making their living on the water as did their ancestors\, oystering and crabbing. Recently\, Tangier Island has been the focus of news stories as a possible casualty of climate change and sea level rise as each year flooding on the island becomes more frequent and erosion increases. This presentation is a visual journey\, compiled from photos that I have taken over the years.  It explores life on Tangier and paints a picture of the island\, waterman community\, and the wildlife that inhabits its marshes\, lagoons\, and tidal guts.  Includes tips on photographing the waterman community and wildlife.  \nBIO \nFor more than 35 years\, Irene has shared her photographic experiences and love of nature with thousands of individuals through more than 300 photo classes\, workshops\, lectures\, and tours in both the U.S. and abroad including Kenya\, Iceland\, Newfoundland\, the Falkland Islands\, the Brazilian Pantanal\, South Dakota Badlands\, Bosque del Apache\, Chincoteague NWR\, Tangier Island\, etc.  Program sponsors have included zoos\, nature centers\, camera clubs\, and conservation organizations such as National Wildlife Federation and the Assateague Island Alliance. \nFor many years\, she has taught photography classes at Johns Hopkins University and other educational institutions and have written “How To” articles on nature photography for national publications such as Outdoor Photographer and Birding. \nHer images have appeared in magazines\, calendars\, and books published by National Wildlife Federation\, Natural History Society\, Audubon\, and Sierra Club. DESCRIPTION:This program discusses “Some Ways to Analyze and Improve Your Photos” which will cover  \n\nUse of space\nVisual weight\nBalance\nFlow\nElimination of distractions\n\nVisual weight is a primary driver in all of these\, so Roy’s emphasis will be on visual weight. \n  \nWaterside Woolen Mill\, Woodbury\, PA\nRoy Sewall is a retired professional photographer based in Bethesda\, Maryland. Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations\, architecture and design\, people\, nature\, old places and things\, and abstracts. He then moved on to a project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy\, whimsy\, and spirits. Today Roy’s interests are quite broad. Roy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients\, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations. \nRoy considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print\, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows\, as well as in his own studio. \nRoy’s first photography coffee-table book\, Our Potomac\, from Great Falls through Washington\, D.C.\, was published in 2005. The book led to numerous lecture and slide show engagements with local organizations\, and established him as one of the leading photographers of the Potomac River and C&O Canal. His second book\, Great Falls and Mather Gorge\, took a magnifying glass to this extraordinary area; it was published in 2009. These are still the definitive photography books of the river and canal in the DC area. \nRoy offers both private and group instruction and critique to novice and intermediate photographers. In 2014 he became an instructor for the Capital Photography Center\, where he offers classes and local field trips. \nRoy has judged photographic competitions and has critiqued bodies of work at Maryland\, DC\, and Virginia camera clubs more than 70 times since 2006. He regularly does instructional programs at camera clubs and Nature Visions (Manassas\, Virginia)\, with the most popular one being “Taking Your Photography to the Next Level.” \nHe has made over 40 presentations to the general public about the Potomac River and C&O Canal using photographs from his two books. He has also made presentations of photographs of China from 1901 to 1939 by his missionary grandfather Robert Fitch\, to Chinese and U.S. audiences. \nIn 2018\, Roy was selected by the Maryland Photography Alliance to conduct their Judges Training Program\, a three- session program each Fall and Spring. \nRoy served as the President of the North Bethesda Camera Club from 2016 to 2018. You could also learn from the design principles used by master painters and artists through the centuries in creating their timeless masterpieces. DESCRIPTION:A National Geographic staff photographer since 1990\, Mark Thiessen has published numerous feature stories and covers for National Geographic magazine and other National Geographic publications on subjects ranging from Peruvian mummies to the study of human performance.   \nIn 1996\, Thiessen began a personal photography project on Wildland firefighters that took him to the front lines of this phenomenon every summer that led to NGM feature stories on Russian Smokejumpers and recently Alaskan Smokejumpers. Mark’s photographs for the July 2008 National Geographic cover story “Under Fire: Why the West Is Burning” earned first-place recognition by Pictures of the Year International. \nMark documented film director James Cameron’s dive to the ocean’s deepest location at the bottom of the Mariana (or Marianas) Trench. DESCRIPTION:Put your thumb and forefinger together into a small circle\, hold it up to one eye\, close the other eye. Look through that circle: that’s how your camera lens sees the world\, just a small\, tight area\, no peripheral vision.  \nAnd it is also the “secret sauce” of abstract photography technique\, which is the subject of E. David Luria’s presentation on September 7 entitled “Seeing Out of the Box: Abstract Photography Opportunities in the DC Area”. \nDavid maintains that unique abstract images surround us everywhere\, in our own backyard\, on the sidewalk\, in the ribbed patterns of a fallen leaf\, on tie-dye T-shirts\, in a stack of bicycles or nested chairs\, in rug patterns\, on mural art\, graffiti\, on wallpaper\, in glass reflections\, in stained glass windows\, and in art museums.  Abstract photography enhances our photo portfolios with  colorful\, wild and crazy images\, He also maintains it helps train our brains to think out of the box\, look at problems in new ways AND to come up with those clever “Aha!”  answers to crossword puzzle clues!  Best of all\, no special equipment is needed for abstract photography: a phone is fine! \nIn this Zoom talk David will show us examples of abstract shots he has done around the DC area\, explaining when and where he got the shots\, so that club members will be inspired to go out\, squinting through the circles of their thumbs and forefingers. to find similar jewels of art wherever they may be! \nDavid Luria is a professional architectural photographer and founder of the popular Washington Photo Safari program (www.washingtonphotosafari.com) . \nSince the program began in 1999\, David and his 11 fellow instructors have trained over 39\,200 amateur photographers from 50 states and 53 countries in 29 different areas of photography\, such as travel\, architecture\, nighttime\, portraits\, event\, street\, nature and wildlife photography and in Lightroom and Photoshop post-processing techniques.  Training an average of 5 photographers every day\, 365 days a year for 22+ years\, his 6\,000 small-group safaris have taken place in 186 different locations in 11 states\, 30 cities\, and 8 countries around the world\, including photo cruises in the Caribbean and in Europe. Several NVPS members have participated in his safaris \nDavid’s Washington Photo Safari has received hundreds of 5-star reviews on all major search engines\, and it benefits from high customer loyalty\, with about one-third of all his clients coming back as repeat customers\, year after year\, 750 of them participating in an average of 9 safaris apiece. DESCRIPTION:Nic Stover created the Psychology of Photography as a way to help photographers think of ways to think beyond the basics of taking pictures and into the world of creating images. The Psychology of Photography explores 5 different areas that encompass the bigger part of the artistic and creative process. \nFirst\, we will look at Sensations and Perceptions which is how do we perceive the world and make order out of it\, we will also look at Beliefs and Creativity\, finding some of what we believe in and how do we create.  But no part of perceptions and beliefs are complete unless we look at Expression and Interpretation the parts of us that is about how do we interpret scenes and develop them (and ourselves) through processing. The final portion is about our Formulation and Evolution where we explore what kind of photographer\, we are\, want to be\, and where we are going. With the final piece being Reflection and Refinement of how we can put ourselves and our processes into a state of constant renewal. \nThrough our time together with Nic we will look at how are we drawn to patterns\, shapes\, lines\, and what do they mean to our subconscious. We will also explore some of the different schools of psychology and how the brain forms thoughts and how you can work with that\, examine some of the models of creativity and how we can look to follow and understand where we are in the creative process and understand that there are definable stages of our growth that we experience as photographers. \nAbout Nic Stover \nNic Stover was raised in the high mountains of Western Colorado on a single magazine subscription to National Geographic and only 5 television channels\, where the only shows his family regularly watched were Nature (PBS) and the Tour De France. DESCRIPTION:Chasing the Stars – Capturing the Night Sky – a visual presentation of capturing the Milky Way month by month highlighting the season from January to October. Emphasis is placed on the importance of planning to capture in camera a perceived nightscape for a star filled sky (composition). As part of the planning aspect\, Robert will discuss the apps for scouting locations\, positioning and time of day. He will also discuss choosing the right camera equipment\, lenses for a night of shooting along with various types of low-level lighting to employ on your night time experience. As a preface\, Robert will talk about various post-processing techniques to help make decisions on shooting methods for quality night sky images. \nRobert W. Fawcett (Bob) – Retired from 31 years of Government service\, 26 of those years as a Forensic / Scientific / Technical Photographer. Growing up in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania the interest in photography began early with his father taking the family on weekend drives through the country\, taking in the scenery down back roads never explored. Little did Robert know back then it would become a career that would take him on a journey to places around the globe. That journey began in Washington\, D.C. in October of 1985. As he continues the journey\, his plan is to share with others his passion for photography and pass along the experiences from the days of film to the current digital world. From the beginning and up until present Robert have always been a true believer of shooting in a manual mode\, using the three things of what photography is: ISO\, Aperture and Shutter. DESCRIPTION:Marie Joabar from the Capital Photography Center will present How to shoot the Moon\, Fireworks\, Waterfalls and Snow at NVPS’s December 1st program meeting. \nMarie Joabar has been immersed in photography and photography education for more than 20 years and is passionate about sharing her knowledge about photography\, cameras and digital technology with others. \nWhether she’s teaching photography\, helping one better understand their camera or “see” better compositions\, she works to build one’s confidence and take away the intimidation and sense of overwhelming that often accompanies learning new things. She finds just the right way to take complicated concepts and explain them in a logical\, easy to understand way. \nMarie founded Capital Photography Center in January 2012 to help those with a love of photography grow their skills and reach their goals – be it to capture better snapshots or become a professional photographer. To this end\, her company offers a wide variety of photography classes taught by professional photographers and renowned photographic educators where amateurs\, hobbyists and professionals can learn about the areas of photography suited to their interests and experience level. \nIn addition to running her business and teaching\, Marie finds time to enjoy her own photography and loves capturing people – both candid and posed\, country landscapes\, and dynamic cityscapes\, especially at nighttime.  Her travels have given her the opportunity to photograph in Venice\, Tuscany\, London\, New York and various other locations in the United States.  Her work can be viewed on her website at Marie Joabar Photographs \nOriginally from Michigan\, Marie has lived in Alexandria\, Virginia (outside of Washington DC) for the past 30+ years with her husband. \nThere are certain subjects that can be difficult to expose well such as the moon and snow. Marie will cover how to get proper exposures of each and will share tips to craft exciting shots of these subjects. \nMarie will also cover tips and techniques for capturing waterfalls as a silky flow and will cover the tools that make it easier to be more creative. She’ll also discuss how to freeze the fireworks display and capture it with multiple bursts in one frame.
