SUMMARY:Field Trip to Meadowlark Gardens for Winter Lights
DESCRIPTION:NVPS December Field Trip to Meadowlark Gardens for Winter Lights \nWhen: Thursday\, December 12th at 7 PM \nWhere: The Meadowlark Visitor Center \n9750 Meadowlark Gardens Ct. Vienna\, VA 222182 \nWe look forward to you joining NVPS for a field trip to photograph the Meadowlark Gardens winter celebration in lights.  A beautiful sight and fun for all! \nAt that time of year\, it is hard to know what the weather will be other than we can anticipate it will most likely be cold\, so dress warmly.  The visitor center is warm and cozy but has limited seating if you need to warm up. The lights will shine in all weather.   \nWe will meet at the Visitor Center at 7PM.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online starting October 1\, 2019 at https://www.eventbrite.com/.  It is important to get your ticket ahead of time as the Gardens manages the crowd by the ticket sales.  The tickets are sold for date and time and are reasonably price. We will confirm prices closer to the date. Unfortunately\, we are unable to get a group discount for NVPS members. \nYou can check out all the Meadowlark activities at https://www.novaparks.com/parks/meadowlark-botanical-gardens \nWe can plan on an after-shoot snack or desert at the Amphora Restaurant located at 377 Maple Ave W\, Vienna\, VA 22180. \nWe hope you will join us! \nJudy Graham and Tana Ebbole \nField Trip Coordinators 2019-2020 \nFieldtrips-2019@nvps.org \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Anonymous Critique with Fran Bastress and Kathryn Mohrman
DESCRIPTION:Education and Training: December 10\, 2019 \nAnonymous Critique with Fran Bastress and Kathryn Mohrman \nTake this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are experimenting with new software; images that need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images.  \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 3\, to allow time for our computer team to anonymize the images and for Fran and Kathryn to review them before the December 10 meeting.   \nYou can submit up to three images.  Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued.  Beyond that\, Fran and Kathryn will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease submit your images to critique-2019@nvps.org\, sized the same as for competition:  jpeg images with a maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend your images be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI) for best results with our projector.  If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions?  Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi\, at education-2019@nvps.org.  \n

SUMMARY:Programs: Mark Buckler - Nailing Your Exposures - It’s not as hard as you think
DESCRIPTION:Bio\nMark Buckler has been actively documenting nature for over 30 years. Mark was born on Cape Cod\, MA and his passion for photography was ignited and honed in this area of natural beauty. In 2005\, Mark moved to the Outer Banks of NC\, where he continues to reside and pursue his passion for nature\, wildlife and landscape photography. Mark’s degree in wildlife biology from the University of Vermont and his extensive experience as a wildlife field biologist provides him with a deep understanding of nature and animal behavior. This knowledge enhances Mark’s ability to capture unique and interesting nature images and also put his workshop clients into the right spots to capture the most compelling images. Additionally\, his 15 years of experience as a high school biology teacher contributes to Mark’s ability to offer engaging\, meaningful and enjoyable instructional workshops and presentations. Mark is a renowned photographic instructor who has been invited to teach workshops or give presentations nationwide. Mark’s highly acclaimed images have received numerous international\, national\, regional and local awards. His fine art prints have been featured in many exhibitions and can also be found in several galleries. Mark’s photos have appeared in dozens of magazines and other publications\, Along with co-author\, Steve Alterman\, Mark has documented the abundant wildlife and diverse habitats in and around the Outer Banks in a book\, Coastal Wild – Among the Untamed Outer Banks. \nPresentation\nNailing Your Exposures – It’s not as hard as you think\nThroughout decades of teaching experience\, I have recognized that the single most challenging aspect of photography that most people face is that of getting the proper exposure. This presentation will break down the entire concept of exposure into a few basic considerations that will simplify this complex\, abstract and counterintuitive process. We will cover exposure theory\, the benefits and drawbacks of various shooting modes and how to properly meter using today’s digital cameras. \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: Portugal – Top To Bottom with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:The Program \nIf you like visiting European countries\, there’s a lot to like about Portugal as a travel and photo destination. It’s big on history\,antiquities\,culture\, great food\, friendly people\, (many who speak English)\, and it’s a direct flight from Dulles airport. Also\, the country is small enough to see a good part of it (by car) in a relatively short time. \nIn this presentation\, Mike will review his May 2019 road-trip with his wife and two friends. Starting and ending in Lisbon the team drove a big loop that included Sintra\, Óbidos\, Porto\, Braga\, Douro Valley\, Evora\, and Lagos (Algarve). Mike wil provide the route\, the company who booked hotels\, setup car rental\, and provided a pre-programmed Garmin navigation device. Naturally\, many photos taken along the way will be shared. \nPortugal exceeded expectations in every respect and therefore is highly recommend going there either for a vacation or seeking photo-ops. If you have any interest in visiting Portugal\, you may find this presentation informative. Portugal has been somewhat of a sleeper for tourists and the traffic seemed less than the other popular European destinations. However\, don’t expect that to last as the word gets out of this lesser-known gem. \n  \nBIO of Mike Whalen \nAs a teen\, Mike learned a few photo basics from his father\, a photographer and artist. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that with a few digital point-and-shoots.  However\, it wasn’t until 2006\, when he purchased a basic DSLR\, that he began to see the potential of digital technology. \nAfter a chance meeting with member\, Willa Friedman\, in 2008\, where he learned about NVPS\, he joined in 2009. He has served on the board from 2010 to the present and served as President in 2013. In 2018 and 2019 he was awarded distinguished service awards.  From participating in many NVPS competitions\, he received numerous annual awards including\, “Photographer-of-the-Year”\, “Color-Print-of-the-Year” and “Image-of-the-Year” at various times. In recent years\, he also scored three cover shots on the Spring editions of Washington Gardener Magazine and in 2016\, he won Nature Visions “People’s Choice” award. Mike also donates his time regularly\, as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, volunteers as a photographer for charitable organization’s annual DC events such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: “Prints” with Eva Lanyi; “Digital” with Philip Winters
DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Eva Lanyi \nTitle: Portfolio Excerpts \nA member of NVPS since 2015\, Eva Lanyi has been interested in photography since her first blurry black and white photos of the neighbor’s dog\, taken with her Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  School\, work\, and life in general created other priorities for many years. Since retiring from a 32-year federal career as an analyst\, she’s been able to concentrate more on photography and plans to make it a big part of her life going forward.   She constantly works to improve her technical and artistic abilities\, while keeping photography a fun\, enjoyable endeavor.   \nMs. Lanyi does mainly landscape and garden photography\, because she loves being outdoors.  She has also started doing bird and wildlife photography. In addition\, believing that the natural world is imperiled by human activity\, she would like her photography to show the grandeur of Mother Nature before it is gone.  She also constantly scrutinizes trees\, rock formations\, leaves\, sand (anything\, really) for interesting\, more abstract scenes from nature. Every photography adventure\, for her\, is an opportunity for a “personal best” photo. She works with Nikon equipment and a trusty Manfrotto tripod.  You can view some of her work at evalindalanyi.com. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n“Digital” with Philip Winters \nDigital Image Gallery – Philip Winters – Norway\, a Country of Sea\, Mountains\, Snow\, and Ice  \nPhil started taking pictures as a kid\, using an old family box camera.  In his teens\, he got to use one of his father’s older range finders for his intermittent photo efforts. He received an SLR\, he thinks it might have been a brand called Miranda\, as a high school graduation present and began taking as many photos as he could with the usual limited funds of a college student. Once his income rose above zero\, he splurged on a Minolta SLR\, a step up with modern features like a built-in light meter. During his working life as a Federal Budget Analyst in the Congressional Research Service\, he continued taking photos\, mostly for fun and for family and now has thousands of slides and prints locked safely away in sleeves and boxes\, possibly never again to see the light of day. In the 1980’s\, his wife took her students on five-week tours of Europe and Phil got to go along on several of them\, taking as many film rolls\, mostly slides\, as he could stuff in his luggage. An after-trip party was held that included a slide show – who remembers those? – that Phil put together.  \nOnce the digital era arrived\, he bought a 3-megapixel non-DSLR of some forgotten brand (he doesn’t remember the brand and can’t find the camera in his photo equipment graveyard). He remembers that the camera took fairly decent pictures\, as long as you didn’t blow them up or crop them. Since then\, he’s moved on\, first to a Nikon 90\, followed by a Nikon 7000\, both very nice cameras\, but his shoulders and back complained about the weight of the accumulation of stuff in the camera bag. That led to his current cameras\, the mirrorless Sony 6000 and Sony 6300.  His shoulders and back gave him a big thank you. He keeps a Nikon point-and-shoot in his car\, just in case\, and of course has his phone ready for photo emergencies. \nHe’s very happy that he joined NVPS several years ago (he says it feels like forever – in a good way).  He’s learned a lot\, including better composition\, being almost comfortable using Lightroom\, and enjoying being able to cut and mat his prints.    \nHe hopes you enjoy his photos of Norway.  \n \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Image Critique – Assessing Your Own\, and Others’\, Images with Willa Friedman\, Ginger Werz-Petricka\, and Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:Speakers’ Panel for Education and Training: The panel will include members: Willa Friedman\, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Mike Whalen \nThe November 12 E & T panel discussion will offer a basic methodology of assessing images\, whether your own or someone else’s\, with a goal of making effective\, impactful images.  Realizing that all image creation and critique is subjective\, the panel will discuss questions that should be considered when photographing or assessing an image.  The goal of the session is to help club members improve their own photography and increase understanding of the factors under consideration in image critique and/or competition. \nFor example: When preparing to make a photograph\, the first questions to ask are: what is the subject or purpose of my image?  What am I trying to convey?  When looking at an image\, the questions a viewer asks are: what am I supposed to see or feel?  What is the point of this image? \nAll image creation and critique flow from the above basic questions.  A number of discrete\, identifiable factors goes into answering the questions: there are technical aspects such as focus\, lighting\, and contrast; and compositional aspects such as subject interest\, subject placement\, and image clutter.   Ginger\, Willa\, and Mike will provide examples\, offer their insights\, and take questions.  \nIf you have specific questions you’d like them to addresses\, please send them by November 1 to education-2019@nvps.org.

SUMMARY:Field Trip to Huntley Meadows Park - Friday
DESCRIPTION:NVPS November Field Trip to Huntley Meadows Park \nWhen: \nFriday\, November 8\, 2019 (Rain Date\, Saturday) \nNOTE: THE SATURDAY FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED! \nSaturday\, November 9\, 2019 (No rain Date) \nWe are going there both days.  Please attend the date that works for you. \nField Trip Leader: \nStan Bysshe \n \nThis time of year it is hard to know what to expect at Huntley Meadows. But since all will be traveling by car there is no reason not to be prepared for all photo subjects. \nThere is a fair amount of walking and it can be wet so hiking shoes are helpful. \nTripod and a good assortment of lenses for birds\, landscapes and macro can all be used. \nDepending on the season there may still be quite a bit of fall color and migratory birds may still be hanging out. Early morning is the best time to see deer\, beaver\, and the elusive fox and otter. \nSunrise will be at approximately 7:00 a.m. so Stan will be in the parking lot by 6:30 ready to head out. Stragglers can meet us on the boardwalk. \nDepending on the light and subject manner we can shoot until late morning and plan for brunch at iHop on Route 1.  \nHuntley Meadows:   https://www.google.com/maps/place/3701+Lockheed+Blvd\,+Alexandria\,+VA+22306/@38.76\,-77.0976212\,16.44z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89b7adf703dc2dc5:0xc0896358d9baec18!8m2!3d38.7601672!4d-77.0955692 \niHop:   \n7694 Richmond Highway \nAlexandria\, Va. 22306 \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: "Work It" with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Forum: “Work It” with Wayne Guenther \nThe title of my forum discussion is “Work It!” I shoot all kinds of subjects but it’s relatively rare that I spend more time and attention on what’s in the viewfinder than two or three exposures. I do move position and change in-camera crop and consider the orientation\, but “see it\, shoot\, move on” is my usual photography mode. There are visual situations however\, that so grab my attention that I shoot many more exposures and thus “work” the scene. Sometimes these events are planned and sometimes serendipity. For the presentation I’ll go through my experiences with a melded slide show/narrative with examples of working the subject\, ending with favorite shots from each sequence. \nShort Bio.\nWayne Guenther got involved with photography in 1967 when running around with like-minded soldiers during his first stationing in Germany\, and it grew into an avocation over the next thirty years. He retired from Army Logistics as an Lieutenant Colonel in 1988 and moved on to manufacturing management\, but always had the urge to look for creative photographs when time allowed. In 1995 he was juried into Gallery West\, an art co-op in Old Town Alexandria\, and also joined The Art League of Alexandria. This gave him the nudge to create new work every month which helped develop his base style; it’s strongly graphic\, with patterns and lines\, curves\, and reflections. In 2001 Wayne retired again and started a one-man photography business which led to a contract job at the Lorton\, VA Workhouse Arts Center where he documented the conversion of the federal prison to an arts center and functioned as “staff photographer” when it opened in 2009. He was a charter member of two photography cooperatives at the Workhouse until 2011. He and his wife Judy\, also an NVPS member\, have been traveling widely for ten years\, which has really broadened Wayne’s subject matter and style. Who knew there were landscapes\, people/cultures\, and wildlife out there? Wayne joined NVPS in 2015\, and was Photographer of the Year for Class Three Digital Images\, 2016-2017.\nAfter shooting with Nikon equipment for 47 years\, he sold everything in 2014 and changed to Micro Four Thirds\, using both Olympus and Panasonic equipment. SUMMARY:Member's Gallery "Prints" with Curtis Gibbens; "Digital" with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Curtis Gibbens \nTitle: The Wild Side \nCurtis Gibbens\nCurtis Gibbens has been taking outdoor photography for over 20 years. His interest sparked the first time he stepped on the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows Park. He did not realize such a wetland environment existed in Fairfax County. \nCurtis has many landscape images\, but wildlife is his favorite subject. Most of his wildlife images are birds – they are everywhere\, from national parks to his back deck. \nCurtis enjoys visiting great locations like Yellowstone\, Bosque del Apache\, and Alaska\, but finds the Washington metro area provides many opportunities for nature photography. Mountains are two hours west and the Eastern Shore is two hours east. Curtis’s favorite day trips are Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge\, Maryland. However\, Huntley Meadows Park is still his favorite photographic location today. \nCurtis has been a NVPS member for almost 20 years. He gained great knowledge throughout the years such as having an eye for photography\, exploring new subjects and locations\, and gaining knowledge of his Nikon equipment. \nHe had an image selected by the North American Nature Photography Association in “Expressions”\, 2016. Curtis was the album photographer for an alternative band\, “The Mood”. He has also been drafted to take pictures at work and church events\, which is when he wishes no one knew of his photography interest. He currently has a government job and can’t wait to retire and to devote more time to photography. Here are some of Curtis’s images. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n“Digital” with Jim Sinsheimer. \nTitle: Architecture and the Urban Landscape \nAs an architect and design/construction manager for the past 45 years\, I’ve been engrossed in the creation of building and interior spaces\, mostly within the urban environments of Phoenix\, Southern California and lately Chicago. Photography has always been an integral part of my career even from college where we had a small darkroom in the College of Architecture at the University of Arizona back in the early 70’s. I started merely documenting my completed projects\, then progressed to construction documentation. Along the way\, I realized that there was an artistic bent to be captured if I only looked beyond the basic forms. Images became more expressive and expanded into the urban context itself.   I hope to convey the fascinating opportunities of capturing these types of images in my presentation.  \nMy introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when my Dad converted a coal bin (we now had gas heat) to his darkroom.  However\, my interest really took off in college.  I’ve been a member of NVPS since last year having moved recently to Virginia from Southern California to be with our grandson and his family.  My work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork and will be soon featured again LensWork’s “Seeing in Sixes”.  I have had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago.  For several years\, my images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nI’ve been a Canon shooter forever – I still have my FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. For the future\, I’m working on a portfolio of architectural details to install at the 71 South Wacker digital wall. Travel photography to Europe is also in the plan. Of course\, the Willing Warriors project is of foremost importance. \n  \n \n \n \n… \n \n

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Waterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster's House
DESCRIPTION:October Field Trip \nWaterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster’s House \nWaterford\, located in northern Loudoun County\, is one of the most photogenic locations in our region. Founded in the early 1700s\, it is today a National Historic Landmark District\, with buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These include the Waterford Mill (mid-1700s)\, the “Arch House Row” (also mid 18th Century)\, and the Presbyterian church (1882). Waterford\, with a largely Quaker and abolitionist population\, remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War\, but was the scene of a battle. \nMany of us know Waterford from its annual fair in early October. (It will be October 4\, 5\, 6 and this year.) Roger Lancaster knows it as home and has offered to share some of his favorite photographic locations with us during a NVPS Field Trip on Saturday\, October 19. An added bonus is Roger will have the keys to the mill\, the old school and other buildings\, plus he has made arrangements to visit some of the beautiful gardens. \nYou can get a preview of Waterford’s sites and articles on its history at https://www.waterfordhistory.org/ \nAfter touring the Waterford area\, Roger will host a potluck at his house. To keep things moderately organized\, please bring whatever you’d like to drink as well as a dish to share: \nLast name beginning with A – J Salad or hamburger fixings (ketchup\, relish…) \nLast name beginning with K –R Side dishes (potato salad…) \nLast name beginning with S – Z Dessert \nWe will meet at Roger’s house at 9:00 a.m. on October 19. (Maps and directions will be provided separately.) \nField Trip Coordinators for 2019-2020 are Tana Ebbole and Judy Graham\, fieldtrips-2019@nvps.org

SUMMARY:Competition - Judge Kristi Odom - Theme: Low Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Themed Competition “Low Perspective” with judge Kristi Odom. \nBIO \nKristi Odom joined Nikon’s elite Ambassador program in May of 2018.\nAn internationally acclaimed photographer and sought-after\nmotivational speaker\, Kristi travels the world shooting\, teaching and\nsharing her insights. From destination weddings in Thailand to\nconservation projects in the jungles of Borneo\, she’s always on the\nmove\, always ready to connect with others. \nShe has received a Master’s accreditation from WPPI (Wedding and\nPortrait Photographers International) and won over 60 international\nphotography awards. Her recent work has been exhibited twice at the\nSmithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. \nHer web site is:  https://www.kristiodomfineart.com/ \n  \nTheme \nLow Perspective:Placing the camera low to the ground (October 15\, 2019): The idea is to change our normal shooting perspective by shooting images with our cameras close to the ground.  This will provide a great opportunity for creative shots.  Common objects can appear completely different when taken from a low perspective and can provide new compositional opportunities.  Get close and shoot up.  Back up and include foreground and foreground objects.  Get your tripod close to the ground\, or free yourself from your tripod and get down low to the ground with your camera.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Changing from Nikon to Micro Four-Thirds; the Good\, the Bad\, and the OK with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides Wayne’s perspective on the decision process to leave a long-standing camera system\, and a review of my learning curve to adapt to Micro Four-Thirds.  He will have an orientation of the features so we can understand the problems and successes\, but this is not a technical review. Nor is it a system comparison beyond some basic considerations\, one of which (the user interface) still gives me headaches.  If you are using a point and shoot and are thinking of getting into an interchangeable lens system\, this talk may helpful to see pros and cons regarding Micro Four-Thirds. And many of the aspects he will discuss apply to any camera system change; there are pleasant surprises\, disappointments\, and unintended consequences.  Since the Olympus and Panasonic family isn’t widely used\, at the end of the platform presentation we’ll break\, then assemble around tables in the rear to touch and feel the equipment\, and to look at a variety of prints with metadata so you can see what the camera/lens can do.

SUMMARY:Program: Abstract Photography by Don Rosenberger
DESCRIPTION:Bio  \nDon Rosenberger sold all his camera gear and walked away from photography\, but that was back in 1983.  He picked up a camera again in 2005 and has spent most of his weekends and vacation time trying to make up for those years he walked away.   \nSince 2005 he has worked with and been mentored by a great group of well known and some not so well known photographers.   Today Don is still driven by the passion and the urge to always create something better and constantly strives to take his work to the next level.   \nDon served on the board of Nature Visions for 4 years before co-founding Road Runner Photography Tours in 2013.  After 6 years of incredible adventures at Road Runner\, he resigned in order to spend more time pushing his skills into new areas of photography.   \nPresentation Description \nIn this presentation Don will detail his journey into shooting abstracts\, discuss influences and provide suggestions for further study.   By using slower shutter speeds and camera motion we can create a new body of work that allows us to depart from reality. Abstract photography allows to take our art form into a more expressive direction.   With a little practice\, you may also find this to be a compelling form of expression.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: Review My Image & Ask Me a Question
DESCRIPTION:Fran Bastress for Review My Image; Jim McDermott for Ask Me a Question (Nikon equipment and Lightroom) \nReview My Image and Ask Me a Question \nThe “Review My Image” and “Ask Me A Question” tables will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in September\, October\, and November.  At the “Review My Image” table\, an experienced club photographer will be available to offer feedback on images members would like to discuss. Bring your image on a laptop or tablet\, or as a print. With image processing software on your laptop or tablet\, you can look at potential changes to the image in real time. One-on-one discussion about images is productive and fun\, and is intended to help members develop their photography skills.   At the “Ask Me a Question” table\, members can talk with an experienced club photographer about specific camera equipment and/or processing software. The discussion will be most productive if members bring their camera\, smart phone\, or computer to show their question and discuss the answer.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: “Prints” with Bill Corbett; “Digital” with David Crooks - Print Matting Tutorial - Review My Image
DESCRIPTION:Print Matting Tutorial \nBob and Willa Friedman will do a mini-matting tutorial on Tuesday\, September 24\, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, before our regular meeting\, in the back of the room.  Participants should bring a mat cutter and practice mats if they have them\, and be prepared to start promptly at 6:30 p.m..  Bob and Willa will also bring some practice mats. \nMember’s Gallery \n \nBirds\, Travel & More \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels.     \nBill and Judy recently moved from McLean\, where they raised their three kids\, out to the Willowsford development in southern Loudoun County.  They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly. He is just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing; it is fun.   \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Nature Visions\, a member of NVPS for the past ten years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there.    \n \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nFlying Critters \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and to be able to capture the beauty of nature is the reward.  From his early days of chasing after cardinals in his neighborhood\, to visiting  many local and far away\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wild life” lives\, David pursues his love of photography. \nFive years ago\, David\, his wife\, and their dog Sam\, moved to Annandale from Leesburg to be closer to work.  He was a member of Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then joined NVPS. He is currently the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \nIn January 2015\, David decided to create a local photography Meetup.  He knew there were many great places to photograph the wildlife along the beltway near his house.  Four and a half years later\, the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group has over 1\,900 members and he leads about two field trips a month. \nCurrently David uses a Canon 7D Mark II with a Sigma 50-500mm lens on a gimbal head and tripod.  David has three destinations on his bucket list: Iceland\, Cuba\, and Costa Rica\, in no particular order! \nThe title of his presentation is “Flying Critters\,” a slideshow of his photos of birds and bugs in flight.  Enjoy!

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Old Town Alexandria - Street Photography
DESCRIPTION:September 2019 Field Trip \nOld Town Street Photography \nWithin eyesight of Washington\, D.C.\, on the Potomac River Old Town Alexandria\, VA is nationally recognized for its rich history\, beautifully preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture\, cobble stone streets\, and for their delightful festivals\, parades\, shops\, restaurants and great people watching. \nKicking off the 2019 – 2020 club year\, two of NVPS’ best street photographers\, Willa and Bob Friedman\, will lead a field trip through Old Town Alexandria.  They will provide an opportunity for us to learn and/or refine the art of street photography\, including how to capture in” stealth mode” those special moments of people doing their thing. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 21st at \nTime: 9:00a.m. \nWhere: 301 King Street\, Alexandria\, VA \nWe will meet at the entrance to the Market Square Parking Garage (Republic Parking) at 110-198 N. Fairfax Street near the intersection of King Street and N. Fairfax.  There is free parking until noon according to their website. Note – the last time Bob was there the sign said 1:00PM. \nWe will begin by wandering through the market seeking interesting scenes and people.  Once we’ve had our fill and/or the market gets too crowded\, we will head toward the river taking photos along the way which includes some interesting architecture.  Then along the river behind the Torpedo Factory is a park and veranda with great opportunities to catch people “doing their thing” and interacting with a new art installation.   \nAs to photo gear a medium zoom covers it all. Wide angle and normal lens\, 50-75mm should be adequate. A long lens is not recommended. And per Willa\, no tripods! \nField Trip Coordinators for 2019-2020 are Judy Graham and Tana Ebbole\, fieldtrips-2019@nvps.org

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Night Photography at Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:On August 14 Mike Whalen will lead a late-afternoon/evening field-trip to the Montgomery County Fair in Gaithersburg\, MD. This is an excellent opportunity to photograph colorful lights and carnival rides\, award-winning farm animals\, people having fun\, and so much more. \nA highlight will be to capture night photos of the many moving light-trails produced by the rides. Plan to stay well after dark. A tripod  is a must  for slow-shutter captures\, and a wide-standard focal length zoom lens would be most useful. \nWe will plan to meet inside the fairgrounds around 4:00 PM\, likely near the poultry house on Hickory Ave.  We will also plan to meet at 6:30 near the intersection of Red Oak St. and Maple Ave. to grab a quick bite at one of the nearby eateries. After that\, we will migrate to the carnival area to photograph lights\, rides\, concessions\, etc. (See map below.) \nIf your interested\, please contact Mike via email (specialboardmember1 “at” nvps.org) and include your cell phone number in case he needs to contact you. \nThe admission cost is $15 and parking is $10. There is plenty of parking\, but car-pooling is always a good option. \nThe fair’s website: http://mcagfair.com/general-information/ \nFairground Map: http://mcagfair.com/general-information/fairground-map/ \nA few photos taken at last year’s fair: https://www.facebook.com/mike.whalen.16718/media_set?set=a.929106210616518&type=3 \nFairground Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Montgomery+County+Agricultural+Fair/@39.1466123\,-77.2156419\,14z/data=!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x89b62d270c7697d7:0x9de7eefbd5feab22!2sMontgomery+County+Agricultural+Fair!8m2!3d39.1455449!4d-77.2086971!3m4!1s0x89b62d270c7697d7:0x9de7eefbd5feab22!8m2!3d39.1455449!4d-77.2086971

SUMMARY:Member's Forum: "Baseball" with Frank Napoli
DESCRIPTION:Baseball \nFrank Napoli Biography \nI began my “career” in photography back in the mid ‘70s. Two close friends were photographers (one of them a young lady with whom I definitely wanted to spend more time)\, so I decided to get a camera and become “a photographer”.  I bought a used Nikkormat FT2 body (which I still have) and one of the aforementioned friends gave me a 50mm lens\, so I was set! We spent time together shooting a lot of film (mostly Kodachrome 64 for its tight grain pattern)\, attending the Nikon School of Photography\, and sending the film via mail order to Kodak for processing. (It was about a 10-day turnaround time before we got to see our pix; a far cry from our instantaneous  “chimping” feedback today!) \nI’ve always considered starting with the FT2 to have been a great advantage to my basic foundation in photography—it’s a manual focus\, match needle metering body\, with no automatic modes (either focus or exposure) of any kind. It forced me to learn and understand the basics of exposure and focus\, which I strongly recommend to everyone. \nAs time went by I was able to amass a fairly reasonable camera bag full of vintage Nikon equipment – a 200mm and 300mm telephotos\, a 55mm macro\, a 35mm wide angle\, a second body (Nikon EM\, which gave me auto-exposure and a motor drive for the first time!)\, a Vivitar 283 flash\, and the usual assortment of filters\, tripods\, monopods\, manual release cables\, and other accessories. \nAt the time I was shooting primarily wildlife (I’m also an avid birder—ask me about the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in PA)\, and family and work events. I used to keep my camera with me in the car almost all the time\, and would often pull off the road at a moment’s notice to shoot something interesting. I remember\, for instance\, driving down I-70 and seeing a Red Tail Hawk swoop down to take a mouse and light in the median with its prey—I pulled over and got a few good shots of “dinner”. \nI continued shooting regularly after I got married\, often with my wife (she has a considerable collection of camera equipment too\, although she doesn’t shoot much anymore) until my son was born. After that we no longer had room for a camera bag when we traveled\, and started buying cardboard throw-away (film) cameras to stuff in the diaper bag.  Eventually\, I bought my wife a Canon “Digital Elf”\, an early digital point-and-shoot camera not much bigger than the cardboard throwaways\, and the Napoli family entered the world of digital photography\, where we were both very comfortable\, since we both work in IT. Although we made great pictures with the Elf\, I missed the control of my FT2 and selection of lens\, and one day wondered out loud if Nikon digital bodies could use my old “film” lenses. My wife secretly grabbed one of my lenses\, went to the local camera shop (boy do I miss the convenience of local camera stores!) found out that the Nikon D200 would work with all my old lenses\, and bought me one for Christmas that year.  I’ve since upgraded to a D500 and added several state-of-the-art auto-focus lenses\, but still occasionally pull out the 55 macro or the 300 tele. I worked with Georgette Grossman at the time\, who invited me to NVPS\, and the rest\, as they say\, is history. \nMost of my photography since my son was born in 1997 has documented his life. In addition to his career as a singer\, choir director\, and music educator\, throughout elementary and high school he played baseball\, and played catcher/third baseman on the baseball team at DeMatha Catholic H.S. In my presentation tonight I’ll show some of my baseball pictures and I’ll discuss my approach to capturing them\, some of the problems I’ve encountered while shooting them\, and techniques I’ve used to overcome those issues.  Enjoy! \n \n
