DESCRIPTION:Africa \nKirk Johnson Biography \nSince joining NVPS in August 2012\, Kirk Johnson has been taking digital photographs of a variety of subjects\, such as architecture\, animal\, street and urban\, portrait\, black-and-white\, floral and abstract. \nUtilizing the Nikon D7100 DSLR and LG G7 smartphone as well as a variety of post-processing tools (Photoshop CS6\, NIK Collections\, Topaz Studio\, Portrait Professional 18\, and Photomatix)\, Kirk has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including: 2017 International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA) – Nominee Award for Abstract photography; the 2014 Great American Country  (GAC) – Hunt for Americana Photo Contest – United States Southern Region Finalist; numerous NVPS monthly competition awards.  Additionally\, his photographs have appeared in Bliss Magazine and twice in Shutterbug.com “Photo of the Day.” \nKirk\, who retired from the U.S. Navy in 1999 as a Lieutenant Commander\, currently resides in Alexandria\, Virginia with his wife Leslie.   Presently\, Kirk is a Principal Director working for the federal government in Washington\, D.C.  \n For the January 2020 Member’s Forum Kirk will discuss his November 2019 trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe; and share some background information on a number of sites he and his wife\, Leslie\, visited along with photographs taken during the nearly two weeks stay.

DESCRIPTION:Prints with Fran Bastress \nFran Bastress\nFran will entertain us on January 28 with a collection of the beautiful photographic images she’s created in recent years. Fran has been involved in photography for decades\, and sees it as a way to connect with the extraordinary in the world. She captures and creates her images because of their beauty\, uniqueness\, and elements of design. Inspired by the North American landscape\, she has traveled its highways and byways to discover limitless possibilities for harvesting art from nature in the magical light of early morning and late afternoon. \nShe has been drawn especially to America’s West and South\, and recently Iceland. \nFran became more engrossed in photography after buying a secondhand Hasselblad and taking a photography course in Boston\, where she developed her darkroom skills. Black & white photography was her passion while living in New England\, and she found the area rich with photographic possibilities. \nMoving into digital after shooting with film\, Fran has advanced through a variety of Canon’s single lens reflex cameras\, most recently to the 5D Mark IV. She has participated in photo tours and workshops\, but now she and her husband do extensive research to create their own photography adventures. \nFran personally handles all aspects of her art\, from image capture to framing. She uses Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and a variety of plug-ins\, including the Nik and Topaz collections. \nFran has been active in NVPS for nearly 10 years\, and served on its board two years as secretary. DESCRIPTION:Education & Training – Artistic Image Processing with Roger Lancaster \nRoger Lancaster has been a member of NVPS since 2009. He first started his journey into photography as a 6-year-old when his grandfather\, a photojournalist\, let him use his fold up Kodak camera. He delved a bit more when his family gave him the old 35mm Pentax film camera\, and as his kids grew older immersed himself in photos of their sports contests\, concerts\, vacations\, etc. However\, upon retirement\, he pursued fine art photography with a passion. As he says\, it was a hobby that got out of control! He has won numerous awards for his photography\, the most recent being Photographer of the Year for Color Prints Class 3 from NVPS in 2018. He also has had his images printed in many magazines and photo journals. \nThe world of digital photography opened his eyes to the creative aspect of the craft\, and he now gets as much enjoyment out of the artistic aspects of post-processing as he does the actual shooting of the image. In fact\, his business card now refers to him as a Photographer/Image Artist. In his session at NVPS on January 14\, Roger will discuss and illustrate his approach to the artistic aspect of post-processing and will cover such subjects as use of brushes\, filters\, and\, plugin tools in Photoshop that allow artistic expression\, use of actions in Photoshop\, converting to monochrome\, plus other topics. If there are specific topics in the general area of artistic expression and image manipulation that you would like to cover\, please let him know prior to his presentation. \n

DESCRIPTION:NVPS January 2020 Field Trip to Washington National Cathedral \nWhen: Saturday\, January 11\, 2020  \nWhere: Washington National Cathedral \n3101 Wisconsin Ave.\, N.W. \nWashington\, D.C. 20016  \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \n \nSteve Glintz of NVPS\, will share his knowledge and lead the field trip to the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday\, January 11\, 2020\, at 10 a.m. (date subject to change with notice in the event new activities are announced at the Cathedral which would impact our plans – Steve will monitor). \nThe plan is to meet at 10:00 a.m. at the northwest corner of the Cathedral near Wisconsin Ave. by the elevator to the underground parking.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and active military/veterans. Parking is available underground for $9\, or for free on Wisconsin Ave. if it’s your lucky day.  There are mass transportation options listed on the Cathedral’s website https://cathedral.org/visit-us/directions-parking/.   \nThe morning will start by exploring the South side arcade.  This side of the Cathedral really shines in the morning due to the low angle of the sun.  Participants should slowly make their way down to the high altar to check out the light splashing on the organ pipes\, the altar\, and the many decorations above. \nAt 12 noon\, there is a 30-minute service.  We will have to disperse at this time. No photography is allowed near the high altar\, the naive\, or either arcade (basically anywhere inside on the ground floor).  Steve recommends going downstairs to explore the crypt or going up the elevator in the Northwest tower which connects to the Southwest tower.   \nWhen the service concludes\, the group will return to the ground floor for an encore.  This time to explore the naive and the North arcade. The sun will be at its highest point in the sky and the light cast through the stained-glass windows above creates more unique photographic opportunities.   \nIf participants feel they’ve been overloaded with architecture and color\, there are opportunities to flex your creative muscles.  Multiple exposures of some of the glass windows allow you to combine interesting subjects in unusual settings. Or try dragging the shutter.  This place is literally a candy store for the photographer to quote Steve. \nThe group will take a break around 2 p.m. to meet up next door (immediately south next to the Bishop’s Garden) at the Cathedral coffee shop. They offer coffee\, hot chocolate\, pastries\, and other lite snacks.   \nWhen 3:30 p.m. rolls around\, the group will return outdoors in hopes of a sunset which will turn the outside of the Cathedral that warm golden glow. \nIt’s going to be a full day of photographic wonders\, so stay as long as you like. \nWe hope you can join us! For best results (or at similar to the images created by Steve) he recommends visiting the Cathedral within 6-8 weeks of the winter solstice (December 21\, 2019).  The reason for that is because the sun is especially low on the horizon which helps the inside glow in wonderful colors. \nIf you visit on a Sunday\, you can get free parking and free entry\, however\, Sunday’s are usually busy\, and you have to wait until after 12 noon for services to end.

DESCRIPTION:Photographic Voice and Vision \nEvery photographer should think about how they can find their photographic voice. Once a photographer has found their voice they can then start to develop their vision. It takes time\, but both these aspects are essential to the growth of any photographer. Nikhil will define photographic voice and vision and share his thoughts on how you can develop your photography to speak about who you are as a photographer and what you want to express. This presentation will help you to think about your photography more deeply. \nBIO\n\nNikhil Bahl is a full time professional photographer\, author\, educator and and environmentalist residing in the Washington D.C. area.  Drawing continuous inspiration from nature\, Nikhil adopts novel approaches and seeks meaningful interpretations:  to create photographs that transcend the commonplace\,reflect deeper insights\, and convey an enchantment of the subject’s beauty.\n \nAn offshoot of Nikhil’s fine art photography and love of nature is his documentation of wildlife behaviors and habitats.  As a volunteer with the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, his goal is to portray environmental stories with an artistic appeal\, so his photographs educate and motivate about the imperative of conservation.\n  \nEach year Nikhil leads numerous photography tours and instructional workshops in the United States and abroad. His teaching encourages participants to advance beyond ordinary photos and develop their own style and vision. Nikhil is a popular speaker at photography clubs\, expos and industry events. SUMMARY:Competition: “Night Photography” with Judge Roy Sewall
DESCRIPTION:Night Photography is the theme for the Competition\nThe night presents an interesting set of photographic opportunities. Places active with human activity\, such as city streets\, country fairs\, fireworks\, and etc.\, come alive at night.  But even quiet and lonely places – cemeteries\, back alleys\, and moon-lit shorelines – can surprise you with what they have to offer. The absence of daylight at night will force us to ensure that we capture sufficient light by increasing the length of our exposures\, by adding light (flash or light painting)\, or by increasing the sensitivity (ISO) of our sensors. However\, be careful to maintain the feeling of darkness in the image\, i.e.\, don’t let a too-long exposure turn your scene into the daytime. Wherever you may be headed\, grab your tripod\, a wireless or cabled shutter release\, and a friend (for assistance\, company\, and safety)\, and have fun shooting in the dark.  \nThe definition of night photography is after sunset\, until before sunrise. This would include dusk\, and/or twilight\, which is after sunset. The after sunset/before sunrise is already in the definition. \nRoy Sewall Bio\nRoy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations\, architecture and design\, people\, nature\, old places and things\, and abstracts. But since 2012 his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy\, whimsy\, and spirits. \nRoy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients\, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations. \nRoy’s considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print\, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows\, as well as in his own studio.

Vienna\, VA 222182 \nWe look forward to you joining NVPS for a field trip to photograph the Meadowlark Gardens winter celebration in lights.  A beautiful sight and fun for all! \nAt that time of year\, it is hard to know what the weather will be other than we can anticipate it will most likely be cold\, so dress warmly.  The visitor center is warm and cozy but has limited seating if you need to warm up. The lights will shine in all weather.   \nWe will meet at the Visitor Center at 7PM.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online starting October 1\, 2019 at https://www.eventbrite.com/.  It is important to get your ticket ahead of time as the Gardens manages the crowd by the ticket sales.  The tickets are sold for date and time and are reasonably price. We will confirm prices closer to the date. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum: Portugal – Top To Bottom with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:The Program  \nIf you like visiting European countries\, there’s a lot to like about Portugal as a travel and photo destination. It’s big on history\,antiquities\,culture\, great food\, friendly people\, (many who speak English)\, and it’s a direct flight from Dulles airport. Also\, the country is small enough to see a good part of it (by car) in a relatively short time. \nIn this presentation\, Mike will review his May 2019 road-trip with his wife and two friends. Starting and ending in Lisbon the team drove a big loop that included Sintra\, Óbidos\, Porto\, Braga\, Douro Valley\, Evora\, and Lagos (Algarve). Mike wil provide the route\, the company who booked hotels\, setup car rental\, and provided a pre-programmed Garmin navigation device. Naturally\, many photos taken along the way will be shared. \nPortugal exceeded expectations in every respect and therefore is highly recommend going there either for a vacation or seeking photo-ops. If you have any interest in visiting Portugal\, you may find this presentation informative. Portugal has been somewhat of a sleeper for tourists and the traffic seemed less than the other popular European destinations. However\, don’t expect that to last as the word gets out of this lesser-known gem. \n  \nBIO of Mike Whalen \nAs a teen\, Mike learned a few photo basics from his father\, a photographer and artist. He dabbled with film cameras in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that with a few digital point-and-shoots.  However\, it wasn’t until 2006\, when he purchased a basic DSLR\, that he began to see the potential of digital technology. \nAfter a chance meeting with member\, Willa Friedman\, in 2008\, where he learned about NVPS\, he joined in 2009. He has served on the board from 2010 to the present and served as President in 2013. In 2018 and 2019 he was awarded distinguished service awards.  From participating in many NVPS competitions\, he received numerous annual awards including\, “Photographer-of-the-Year”\, “Color-Print-of-the-Year” and “Image-of-the-Year” at various times. In recent years\, he also scored three cover shots on the Spring editions of Washington Gardener Magazine and in 2016\, he won Nature Visions “People’s Choice” award. Mike also donates his time regularly\, as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, volunteers as a photographer for charitable organization’s annual DC events such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America.

DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Eva Lanyi \nTitle: Portfolio Excerpts \nA member of NVPS since 2015\, Eva Lanyi has been interested in photography since her first blurry black and white photos of the neighbor’s dog\, taken with her Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  School\, work\, and life in general created other priorities for many years. Since retiring from a 32-year federal career as an analyst\, she’s been able to concentrate more on photography and plans to make it a big part of her life going forward.   She constantly works to improve her technical and artistic abilities\, while keeping photography a fun\, enjoyable endeavor.   \nMs. Lanyi does mainly landscape and garden photography\, because she loves being outdoors.  She has also started doing bird and wildlife photography. In addition\, believing that the natural world is imperiled by human activity\, she would like her photography to show the grandeur of Mother Nature before it is gone.  She also constantly scrutinizes trees\, rock formations\, leaves\, sand (anything\, really) for interesting\, more abstract scenes from nature. Every photography adventure\, for her\, is an opportunity for a “personal best” photo. She works with Nikon equipment and a trusty Manfrotto tripod.  You can view some of her work at evalindalanyi.com. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n“Digital” with Philip Winters \nDigital Image Gallery – Philip Winters – Norway\, a Country of Sea\, Mountains\, Snow\, and Ice  \nPhil started taking pictures as a kid\, using an old family box camera.  In his teens\, he got to use one of his father’s older range finders for his intermittent photo efforts. He received an SLR\, he thinks it might have been a brand called Miranda\, as a high school graduation present and began taking as many photos as he could with the usual limited funds of a college student. Once his income rose above zero\, he splurged on a Minolta SLR\, a step up with modern features like a built-in light meter. During his working life as a Federal Budget Analyst in the Congressional Research Service\, he continued taking photos\, mostly for fun and for family and now has thousands of slides and prints locked safely away in sleeves and boxes\, possibly never again to see the light of day. In the 1980’s\, his wife took her students on five-week tours of Europe and Phil got to go along on several of them\, taking as many film rolls\, mostly slides\, as he could stuff in his luggage. An after-trip party was held that included a slide show – who remembers those? – that Phil put together.  \nOnce the digital era arrived\, he bought a 3-megapixel non-DSLR of some forgotten brand (he doesn’t remember the brand and can’t find the camera in his photo equipment graveyard). He remembers that the camera took fairly decent pictures\, as long as you didn’t blow them up or crop them. Since then\, he’s moved on\, first to a Nikon 90\, followed by a Nikon 7000\, both very nice cameras\, but his shoulders and back complained about the weight of the accumulation of stuff in the camera bag. That led to his current cameras\, the mirrorless Sony 6000 and Sony 6300.  His shoulders and back gave him a big thank you. He keeps a Nikon point-and-shoot in his car\, just in case\, and of course has his phone ready for photo emergencies. \nHe’s very happy that he joined NVPS several years ago (he says it feels like forever – in a good way).  He’s learned a lot\, including better composition\, being almost comfortable using Lightroom\, and enjoying being able to cut and mat his prints.    \nHe hopes you enjoy his photos of Norway.  \n    \n

Alan’s work is representative of what he loves: mostly nature\, wildlife and the outdoors. Alan has won numerous regional and international awards. \nAlan has won several local\, regional\, and national photo contests. He has been published in multiple magazines\, and has even shot album covers for local recording artists. DESCRIPTION:Speakers’ Panel for Education and Training: The panel will include members: Willa Friedman\, Ginger Werz-Petricka and Mike Whalen \nThe November 12 E & T panel discussion will offer a basic methodology of assessing images\, whether your own or someone else’s\, with a goal of making effective\, impactful images.  Realizing that all image creation and critique is subjective\, the panel will discuss questions that should be considered when photographing or assessing an image.  The goal of the session is to help club members improve their own photography and increase understanding of the factors under consideration in image critique and/or competition. \nFor example: When preparing to make a photograph\, the first questions to ask are: what is the subject or purpose of my image?  What am I trying to convey?  When looking at an image\, the questions a viewer asks are: what am I supposed to see or feel?  What is the point of this image? \nAll image creation and critique flow from the above basic questions.  A number of discrete\, identifiable factors goes into answering the questions: there are technical aspects such as focus\, lighting\, and contrast; and compositional aspects such as subject interest\, subject placement\, and image clutter.   Ginger\, Willa\, and Mike will provide examples\, offer their insights\, and take questions.  \nIf you have specific questions you’d like them to addresses\, please send them by November 1 to education-2019@nvps.org.

Andrew teaches\nphotography\, sells stock images and writes articles on various aspects of nature\nphotography. A quick review of the gallery will also be provided.  Please bring any questions you may have regarding the website or gallery. \nAdditionally\, Ginger will give a brief update on the Portfolio Project\, show several gallery examples from past portfolios\, and discuss the artist statement. \nWe will also be having our customary “Swap-Meet” on this 5th Tuesday\, so bring any equipment\, books\, magazines\, and etc. that you don’t need/want any longer and see if someone else could use it!  These items can be sold\, traded\, or given away\, it’s up to you! DESCRIPTION:Forum: “Work It” with Wayne Guenther \nThe title of my forum discussion is “Work It!” I shoot all kinds of subjects but it’s relatively rare that I spend more time and attention on what’s in the viewfinder than two or three exposures. I do move position and change in-camera crop and consider the orientation\, but “see it\, shoot\, move on” is my usual photography mode. There are visual situations however\, that so grab my attention that I shoot many more exposures and thus “work” the scene. Sometimes these events are planned and sometimes serendipity. For the presentation I’ll go through my experiences with a melded slide show/narrative with examples of working the subject\, ending with favorite shots from each sequence. \nShort Bio.\nWayne Guenther got involved with photography in 1967 when running around with like-minded soldiers during his first stationing in Germany\, and it grew into an avocation over the next thirty years. He retired from Army Logistics as an Lieutenant Colonel in 1988 and moved on to manufacturing management\, but always had the urge to look for creative photographs when time allowed. In 1995 he was juried into Gallery West\, an art co-op in Old Town Alexandria\, and also joined The Art League of Alexandria. This gave him the nudge to create new work every month which helped develop his base style; it’s strongly graphic\, with patterns and lines\, curves\, and reflections. In 2001 Wayne retired again and started a one-man photography business which led to a contract job at the Lorton\, VA Workhouse Arts Center where he documented the conversion of the federal prison to an arts center and functioned as “staff photographer” when it opened in 2009. He was a charter member of two photography cooperatives at the Workhouse until 2011. He and his wife Judy\, also an NVPS member\, have been traveling widely for ten years\, which has really broadened Wayne’s subject matter and style. Who knew there were landscapes\, people/cultures\, and wildlife out there? Wayne joined NVPS in 2015\, and was Photographer of the Year for Class Three Digital Images\, 2016-2017.\nAfter shooting with Nikon equipment for 47 years\, he sold everything in 2014 and changed to Micro Four Thirds\, using both Olympus and Panasonic equipment. DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Curtis Gibbens \nTitle: The Wild Side \nCurtis Gibbens\nCurtis Gibbens has been taking outdoor photography for over 20 years. His interest sparked the first time he stepped on the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows Park. He did not realize such a wetland environment existed in Fairfax County. \nCurtis has many landscape images\, but wildlife is his favorite subject. Most of his wildlife images are birds – they are everywhere\, from national parks to his back deck. \nCurtis enjoys visiting great locations like Yellowstone\, Bosque del Apache\, and Alaska\, but finds the Washington metro area provides many opportunities for nature photography. Mountains are two hours west and the Eastern Shore is two hours east. Curtis’s favorite day trips are Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge\, Maryland. However\, Huntley Meadows Park is still his favorite photographic location today. \nCurtis has been a NVPS member for almost 20 years. He gained great knowledge throughout the years such as having an eye for photography\, exploring new subjects and locations\, and gaining knowledge of his Nikon equipment. \nHe had an image selected by the North American Nature Photography Association in “Expressions”\, 2016. Curtis was the album photographer for an alternative band\, “The Mood”. He has also been drafted to take pictures at work and church events\, which is when he wishes no one knew of his photography interest. He currently has a government job and can’t wait to retire and to devote more time to photography. Here are some of Curtis’s images. \n  \n    \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n“Digital” with Jim Sinsheimer. \nTitle: Architecture and the Urban Landscape \nAs an architect and design/construction manager for the past 45 years\, I’ve been engrossed in the creation of building and interior spaces\, mostly within the urban environments of Phoenix\, Southern California and lately Chicago. Photography has always been an integral part of my career even from college where we had a small darkroom in the College of Architecture at the University of Arizona back in the early 70’s. I started merely documenting my completed projects\, then progressed to construction documentation. Along the way\, I realized that there was an artistic bent to be captured if I only looked beyond the basic forms. Images became more expressive and expanded into the urban context itself.   I hope to convey the fascinating opportunities of capturing these types of images in my presentation.  \nMy introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when my Dad converted a coal bin (we now had gas heat) to his darkroom.  However\, my interest really took off in college.  I’ve been a member of NVPS since last year having moved recently to Virginia from Southern California to be with our grandson and his family.  My work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork and will be soon featured again LensWork’s “Seeing in Sixes”.  I have had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago.  For several years\, my images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nI’ve been a Canon shooter forever – I still have my FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. For the future\, I’m working on a portfolio of architectural details to install at the 71 South Wacker digital wall. Travel photography to Europe is also in the plan. Of course\, the Willing Warriors project is of foremost importance. \n  \n \n \n \n… \n \n

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Waterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster's House
DESCRIPTION:October Field Trip \nWaterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster’s House \nWaterford\, located in northern Loudoun County\, is one of the most photogenic locations in our region. Founded in the early 1700s\, it is today a National Historic Landmark District\, with buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These include the Waterford Mill (mid-1700s)\, the “Arch House Row” (also mid 18th Century)\, and the Presbyterian church (1882). Waterford\, with a largely Quaker and abolitionist population\, remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War\, but was the scene of a battle. \nMany of us know Waterford from its annual fair in early October. (It will be October 4\, 5\, 6 and this year.) Roger Lancaster knows it as home and has offered to share some of his favorite photographic locations with us during a NVPS Field Trip on Saturday\, October 19. An added bonus is Roger will have the keys to the mill\, the old school and other buildings\, plus he has made arrangements to visit some of the beautiful gardens. \nYou can get a preview of Waterford’s sites and articles on its history at https://www.waterfordhistory.org/ \nAfter touring the Waterford area\, Roger will host a potluck at his house. SUMMARY:Education & Training: Changing from Nikon to Micro Four-Thirds; the Good\, the Bad\, and the OK with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides Wayne’s perspective on the decision process to leave a long-standing camera system\, and a review of my learning curve to adapt to Micro Four-Thirds.  He will have an orientation of the features so we can understand the problems and successes\, but this is not a technical review. Nor is it a system comparison beyond some basic considerations\, one of which (the user interface) still gives me headaches.  If you are using a point and shoot and are thinking of getting into an interchangeable lens system\, this talk may helpful to see pros and cons regarding Micro Four-Thirds. And many of the aspects he will discuss apply to any camera system change; there are pleasant surprises\, disappointments\, and unintended consequences.  Since the Olympus and Panasonic family isn’t widely used\, at the end of the platform presentation we’ll break\, then assemble around tables in the rear to touch and feel the equipment\, and to look at a variety of prints with metadata so you can see what the camera/lens can do.

DESCRIPTION:Bio  \nDon Rosenberger sold all his camera gear and walked away from photography\, but that was back in 1983.  He picked up a camera again in 2005 and has spent most of his weekends and vacation time trying to make up for those years he walked away.   \nSince 2005 he has worked with and been mentored by a great group of well known and some not so well known photographers.   Today Don is still driven by the passion and the urge to always create something better and constantly strives to take his work to the next level.   \nDon served on the board of Nature Visions for 4 years before co-founding Road Runner Photography Tours in 2013.  After 6 years of incredible adventures at Road Runner\, he resigned in order to spend more time pushing his skills into new areas of photography.   \nPresentation Description \nIn this presentation Don will detail his journey into shooting abstracts\, discuss influences and provide suggestions for further study.   By using slower shutter speeds and camera motion we can create a new body of work that allows us to depart from reality. Abstract photography allows to take our art form into a more expressive direction.   With a little practice\, you may also find this to be a compelling form of expression.

SUMMARY:Member's Forum: The World's Biggest Digital Photo Frames with John Krout
DESCRIPTION:Bio \nJohn Krout began taking photos in 1963. His subjects have been as varied as Richard Nixon’s inaugural\, the Apollo 16 launch\, rock concerts\, school concerts\, aerial fireworks and solar eclipses. In the 1970s\, his rock concert photography was published nationwide by Ampersand magazine. After 29 years of 35mm photography using Pentax SLRs\, he switched to Canon in 1999 and now owns two Canon digital SLRs. Since 2011 he has designed and published month per page photo calendars for his family and friends. He holds a masters degree in computer science and worked for most of his career as a software developer. He works now as a technical writer for the Thales Group\, supporting use of their automated fingerprint identification technology by a major federal agency. He has lived all his life in Arlington VA and has traveled to 49 states\, Europe and South America. \n

DESCRIPTION:Fran Bastress for Review My Image; Jim McDermott for Ask Me a Question (Nikon equipment and Lightroom) \nReview My Image and Ask Me a Question \nThe “Review My Image” and “Ask Me A Question” tables will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in September\, October\, and November.  At the “Review My Image” table\, an experienced club photographer will be available to offer feedback on images members would like to discuss. Bring your image on a laptop or tablet\, or as a print. With image processing software on your laptop or tablet\, you can look at potential changes to the image in real time. One-on-one discussion about images is productive and fun\, and is intended to help members develop their photography skills.   At the “Ask Me a Question” table\, members can talk with an experienced club photographer about specific camera equipment and/or processing software. The discussion will be most productive if members bring their camera\, smart phone\, or computer to show their question and discuss the answer.
