SUMMARY:Education & Training - A Workflow from Raw to Print with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will be an in-depth description of a linear logical approach to photograph editing that will take you from a raw file straight out of camera through Photoshop to printing.  It will be geared to novice and experienced users of Photoshop.  Topics discussed will shed light on what should be done\, when it should be done\, and why it should be done. \nThe programs used will be Bridge\, Adobe Camera Raw\, and Photoshop.  The why and wherefore of raw processing will be discussed in depth.  Then we will take a picture into Photoshop and demonstrate the steps to edit non-destructively and get the absolute most out of your picture to produce a “clean” image\, before diving into artistic effects\, cropping and sharpening. \nBio: \nGary first picked up a camera about 7 years ago to photograph his daughter’s academic athletic events.  He realized the powerful effect that careful post-processing could have on an image\, finding that the marriage of the two\, photography and Photoshop\, brought a welcome and readily accessible outlet for creativity.  In fact\, he enjoys post-processing at least as much as he does taking photographs. \nGary shoots a wide variety of images that hopefully have the potential to arouse an emotional response: portraits\, nature\, landscapes\, architecture\, and things.  In coming years\, he hopes to get more into creative\, imaginative edits and mood-type photography that transcend reality\, if ever so slightly.  In the 2019 Nature Visions Expo\, he won best landscape\, best wildlife\, and best in show.  This past year at the club\, he won the advanced digital photographer of the year\, the advanced color prints photographer of the year\, and the advanced versatile photographer of the year. \nGary enjoys talking Photoshop\, and would invite anyone at NVPS at any level to discuss anything about post-processing with him.

DESCRIPTION:Lightroom is the most powerful post-processing software available. It is simple to use and easy to learn\, BUT often photographers find it complicated or confusing. This program will clear up many misconceptions and show you how easy\, fast\, and foolproof using Lightroom can be. If you have tried Lightroom but found it difficult or time-consuming\, OR if you have been reluctant to use it because you thought it would be hard to learn OR if you erroneously thought you would have to change your entire image filing and storage system (which you do not) this program will help give you more confidence and better skills. \nLook below for three examples that illustrate the “Before” and “After” shots to give you a sense of what you’ll learn at this event. \nBio: \nMollie is a professional photographer specializing in nature and wildlife\, abstracts\, and flowers. She runs Awake The Light Photo Workshops and Tours and leads educational and inspirational photo workshops across the country and around the world. She loves sharing her passion for photography with others. \nEarly in her career\, she studied with Ansel Adams and Joyce Tenneson. Her work is in the Permanent Collection of the International Photography Hall of Fame and has been exhibited at Epcot Center in Disney World\, and Grand Central Station in New York City. She is a 15-time winner of the Kodak Gallery Award\, considered by some to be the “Oscar” of photography. \nIn addition to photographing nature and wildlife\, she is also a portrait photographer. She is honored to have photographed many famous faces including actress Meryl Streep\, jazz musician Wynton Marsalis\, and the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. \nShe has authored a coffee table photography book\, plus educational photography e-books. The Flying Circus is the longest running air show in the state of Virginia featuring antique airplanes\, hot air balloons\, formation flying\, aerobatics and wing walking. \nWhen:            Saturday\, October 3\, 2020\, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nRain Date – Sunday\, October 4\, 2020\, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. \n** Rescheduled from August 15 & 16 2020 by the event host\, Flying Circus *** \nThe hot air balloon launch occurs twice daily between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The airshow runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.\, members can photograph the antique planes\, meet with other members\, or have lunch. SUMMARY:Education & Training - The Joys of Water Photography with Lynn Cates
DESCRIPTION:Lynn will share her love of the creative aspects of water photography. Moving water is fascinating whether it is in majestic waterfalls or tiny streams. It has many moods – from lively and energetic to peaceful and calm. Lynn will discuss how to capture some of these moods with techniques she uses in the field such as varying shutter speeds and filters. She also will discuss techniques she uses in post-processing to accentuate lines\, shapes\, and textures to help bring out the feelings she wants to evoke. Lynn also will talk about photographing reflections and water droplets. \nLynn became serious about photography in June 2015. That month she began shooting RAW at a workshop in Acadia National Park\, and she took Corey Hilz’ class “Lightroom in a Day”  and started processing her images. She is passionate about combining her photography with her cross-country road trips. She loves her Nikon D850. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Photographing India's Golden Triangle with George Hogeman
DESCRIPTION:George Hogeman\nGeorge Hogeman retired in 2019 following 31 years as a Consular Officer with the Department of State. His assignments took him and his family to Nigeria\, Canada\, Tanzania\, Afghanistan\, China\, and India.  He fondly remembers shooting Kodachrome and Ektachrome with a Yashica SLR through the end of the nineties when he switched to digital. \nSince 2014\, he’s used Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras with a variety of Olympus and Lumix glass. He enjoys landscape\, wildlife\, and astrophotography.  He and his wife Geri have two adult children. DESCRIPTION:Prints (Virtually):Passages with Fred Krebs\nFred Krebs\nFred’s “Passages Portfolio” began more than 15 years ago on a business trip to Veracruz\, Mexico.  The walkway under the walls of San Juan de Ulúa\, an old Spanish fort\, immediately caught his eye—something about its colors and symmetry drew him in.  He stopped and simply stared down its long expanse.  The repetition reminded him of what you see when you hold a mirror up to a mirror.  Since then he has looked for other passages that have had a similar impact—ones that draw him in\, make him stop and simply look deep into the scene before him.  Once he  began looking for these passages he began to see them. \nFred Krebs came to work in DC in 1975.  In his first paycheck he paid for his rent.  In his second paycheck he purchased a camera (which he still has). After 40 years as an attorney\, lobbyist\, association executive and professor Fred now work diligently at being 100% retired with grandchildren\, travel\, golf and photography being his primary interests.  He takes pictures of things that are of interest to him. Fred felt like he was in a photographic rut so he joined NVPS in 2018 to improve his skills.  Fred says that so far he has had fun with the club as well as a valuable experience that has made him a better photographer. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nDigital: From Angkor Wat to Hanoi: Travels in Postwar Cambodia & Vietnam – Part I Cambodia with Bill Corbett\n(Part II Vietnam scheduled for 12/22/2020) \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels. \nBill and Judy moved three summers ago to southern Loudoun from McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He is still just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly.  His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing.  It is fun. \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions)\, a member of NVPS for the past ten or so years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan and enjoyed/suffered through more than a few travels to other points as a minor representative of American diplomacy.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there. \n

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us for a club favorite\, Monuments at Night on Friday September 11th at 7 pm.  This is a wonderful opportunity for all levels of photographers\, especially beginners.  Your host\, Steven Glintz\, will be on hand for any questions or trouble you may have. \nYour field trip coordinators will also monitor for any developing situations which may impact our enjoyment and update this field trip if necessary.  Be sure to check back the week of this event for updated information. \nWhat: \nThe monuments between the World War II memorial and the Lincoln Memorial take on a whole new life after dark.  Although the Arlington Memorial Bridge will be under repair and the Jefferson Memorial will be undergoing restoration\, there are many other attractions open and available.  The Reflecting Pool\, Lincoln Memorial\, Korean War Memorial\, Vietnam War Memorial\, and the service men and women memorials are all down on the West side.  The water fountains at the World War II memorial should also be operating.  Of course\, there is also the District of Columbia War Memorial (World War I).  The FDR memorial is another option and has many interesting subjects. \nTripods are generally accepted around the grounds provided the photographer is not blocking or hindering pedestrian traffic.  Tripods inside the Lincoln Memorial are prohibited and park rangers will ask you not to use them (there are reports some rangers will look the other way\, but that’s the exception not the norm). \nSunset is anticipated at 7:20 p.m. and Moonset will be at 3:33 p.m.  (no moon\, sorry) \nEquipment: \n\nSturdy tripod\nLeave your super telephotos and fast glass at home\nRemote shutter or cable release may be useful to prevent camera shake on long exposures\nFilters optional\nFlash optional\n\nWhen: \nFriday\, September 11\, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p. m \nRain date on Saturday\, September 12\, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: \nAssemble at Reflecting Pool in front of Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m. for a brief meet and greet. \nMetered parking is available on Ohio Dr. SW as well as the parking lot at the Tidal Basin Paddle Boats.  The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total).  Carpools are recommended if you can travel with others in your extended “bubble”.  Please bring a mask and anticipate wearing the mask when around others.  Please also be patient and remain the recommended six feet away from other visitors. \n  \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy of NVPS member Steven Glintz.  Additional examples and inspiration are available on NVPS gallery. \nNVPS Field Trip Gallery-December 2014: DC at Night \n  \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training - Understanding Photoshop Layers with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:As we all know\, Photoshop is an awesome editing tool for photographers. It has many choices with regard to tools that provide virtually unlimited editing possibilities. One of the most versatile capabilities is use of layers in the workflow process. In Jim’s presentation\, he will review what a layer is\, the different types of layers\, what basic editing can be done with them\, and discuss masking\, which unlocks the full potential of Photoshop layers. The presentation will be live (Jim will do actual editing). However\, don’t feel you’ll need to take copious notes for he has prepared a PowerPoint file of the editing to be posted on the NVPS website. \nJim’s introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when his Dad converted a coal bin into his darkroom. His interest really took off in college. Jim has been a member of NVPS for two years\, having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with his grandson and his family. Jim’s work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork\, and will be soon featured again in LensWork’s “Our Magnificent Planet.” He’s had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago. For several years\, his images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nJim has been a Canon shooter forever – he still has his FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. Travel photography to Finland for the Northern Lights was planned\, but is now on hold due to the pandemic.

DESCRIPTION:Every photographer should think about how they can find their photographic voice. Once a photographer has found their voice\, they can then start to develop their vision. It takes time\, but both these aspects are essential to the growth of any photographer. Nikhil will define photographic voice and vision and share his thoughts on how you can develop your photography to speak about who you are as a photographer and what you want to express. DESCRIPTION:Manny Fernandez \nI have been involved with photography in one way or another since I was in middle school with my trusty Kodak pocket Instamatic camera and flash cubes. My 22 years in the Air Force gave me the opportunity to visit and live in many countries starting with my first assignment following pilot training in Iceland. I have gone through many makes and types of cameras\, but these days I am shooting with a Nikon D500. Travel photography has always been one of my main interests as I wanted a way to document the great places my wife and I have been able to enjoy whether it was Europe\, the Far East\, or South America. After retiring From the Air Force\, I joined the corporate world which took me to places around the United States that I would not have normally seen. I had the opportunity to meet with people from all walks of life who shared my enthusiasm for photography. These days interspersed between trips to overseas locations\, with camera in hand\, I have been making more trips to visit our many national parks. This included my trip from Fairfax Station to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota on my Harley. Currently\, I’m working to improve my skills with Lightroom and Photoshop and of course\, learning new techniques to shoot better photographs.

DESCRIPTION:Shape and Texture\nBy Ginger Werz-Petricka\n \nGinger joined NVPS in 2009 at a point in her life when she really needed to find a creative outlet. Over the years she has been involved with Members Gallery and Education and Training\, but her special interest has always been the Portfolio Project. \n \nShe has been interested in photography since high school and while studying for a fine arts degree in college concentrated on printmaking and photography as her media.  Looking back at early images it has become evident that dramatic light\, shape\, and texture has always been a driving force in her work.  Ginger shot with a Canon 6D for several years\, but after injuring her foot in 2017 has found that her lightweight mirrorless Olympus OMD mark ll has become the camera of choice.\n \n“One of the first questions a photographer always seems to get is ‘What kind of photography do you do?’    My answer is all kinds.  I’m aware that some people think that a photographer needs to specialize\, but if you see the world as shapes\, textures\, light\, and shadow\, any subject is fair game.  Perhaps the exceptions are that I’m not really interested in standing in the woods waiting for birds and animals to make that perfect shot.  I love to get them when they’re cooperative…but.\nFor this collection\, I wanted to include some recent works illustrating the kind of images that make me want to pick up my camera.”\n\n \n\n\n  \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nNatGeo Arctic Expedition\nby Len Johnson \nIn the Summer of 2019\, Len took an 18-day trip to Iceland\, Greenland and the Canadian High Arctic on the National Geographic Explorer ship. This ship is relatively small with only 148 guests plus crew. The expedition team of experts included a naturalist\, two NatGeo photographers\, and regional specialists that shared their knowledge and insights on the wildlife\, landscape\, and local culture. \nThis journey included a street festival in Reykjavik\, Iceland to celebrate their 24th Annual Culture Night\, and a visit to the Whale Museum that features a life-size replica of a great blue whale. There was a short flight from Reykjavik to a small landing strip in Kangerlussuaq\, Greenland where the expedition group was transported by Zodiacs to the National Geographic Explorer ship.\nWe then cruised down the length of Kangerlussuaq Fjord en route to Sisimiut\, a former whaling port on Greenland’s west coast. This small-town features brightly painted colored buildings from the 18th century. \nWe began our exploration of the Canadian High Arctic with a visit to the small Inuit community of Pond Inlet where we saw a cultural and arts presentation by village children and elders. We then sailed to Dundas Harbor where we hiked on the tundra. The ship continued its voyage into Lancaster Sound where we saw polar bears on the drifting icebergs. \nAs we continued the voyage to Dundas Harbour on the Southern shore of Devon Island\, we experienced a magnificent cliff exposing a three-billion-year long geological history of the area.\nAs we continued to explore the Arctic and the Russian Far East\, we sailed to Fram Fjord\, Ellesmere Island. We continued on our journey to Philpots Island where we saw massive icebergs that recently calved from the huge glacier descending from the Cunningham Mountains.\nA highlight was Buchan Gulf\, Baffin Island with its dramatic cliffs carved by Ice Age glaciers that had clouds hovering over their peaks. As our journey continued\, we set anchor in the town of Ilulissat on the West coast of Greenland. Here we visited the archaeological UNESCO World Heritage-designated Ilulissat Icefjord in the Sermermiut Valley.\nThe trip ended sailing through Greenland’s ice cap and picturesque waterways until we returned to Kangaamiut airstrip for the journey home.\nThe Member’s Forum video presentation will be a selection from Len’s photos that feature his favorite images including polar bears\, whales\, soaring icebergs\, and massive glaciers. The presentation also includes colorful buildings in Greenland’s Sissimiut community and photos of the World Heritage site of Ilulissat Icefjord captured on this expedition. \nLen Johnson Bio \nLen Johnson received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Illinois and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was sent to Fort Monmouth New Jersey for training as a photographer. Upon completion of his training\, he was assigned to a base in Okinawa\, Japan where he photographed military ceremonies\, Bob Hope’s USO Tour visit\, and local cultural activities. While in the Far East\, he also traveled to India\, Thailand\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, and the Expo 70 World’s Fair in Osaka\, Japan. \nAfter his military tour of duty in 1971\, he and his wife settled in Arlington\, Virginia and Len began working at a three-person graphic design firm. After ten years as an employee\, he purchased the firm upon the owners’ retirement. He then grew the firm to a 15-person integrated marketing communications firm called JDG Communications. JDG had clients in the government\, corporate and nonprofit sectors and he sold his company in 2009. Since his retirement\, Len has served as a volunteer for the Washington DC chapter of SCORE that mentors small business entrepreneurs. \nHe has been a member of NVPS since September 2015 and appreciates the educational and social opportunities it provides. He photographs using two Fuji X-T3 cameras and likes to shoot landscapes\, nature\, and wildlife. On previous photo journeys\, he photographed wildlife in Africa\, wildflowers in the Arizona desert\, landscapes in Tuscany\, and architecture in Rome and Florence. Len’s next photo adventure will be a photography workshop in Argentina and Chile in March and April of this year. \n    \n\n

He has had a number of one person and group gallery shows of his fine art photography images\, and his fine art photographs reside in an art museum and numerous private collections all over the world. DESCRIPTION:Bio: \n\nAubrey Gemignani is a Documentary\, Reportage\, and Event Photographer. She is currently a full-time photographer and photo archivist at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in Washington\, DC.\, where she has had the opportunity to photograph a diverse range of events at the White House\, the Vice President’s residence\, Capitol Hill\, Kennedy Space Center\, Wallops Flight Facility\, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (to cover manned launches to the International Space Station).\nHer documentary and reportage work has been distributed worldwide through news and photo agencies such as Associated Press\, AFP\, Reuters\, National Geographic Online and Getty Images. Publications highlighting her work include Esquire\, The Washington Post\, New York Times\, NPR\, Photographer’s Forum\, Popular Photography\, Pastry Art and Design\, and the Falls Church News Press.\nSome clients include NASA\, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)\, Cue Recording Studio\, Sodexo\, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT)\, Hope for a Healthier Humanity (HHH)\, International Relief and Development (IRD)\, and The National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians (NCAPIP).\nAssignments and her love of travel has taken her to many countries including Vietnam\, Cambodia\, Pakistan\, Thailand\, Kazakhstan\, Russia\, Mexico\, Dubai\, and Italy. \nAubrey holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University located in Richmond\, VA. She also completed a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from George Washington University.\nShe is a native of the Washington D.C. area.\n \n\nDescription of presentation: I plan to discuss and show some work from the past (approximately) 5 years of covering the space program for NASA including launches\, landings\, the Obama and Trump administrations\, astronaut tours/talks\, and the rise of the commercial space programs. Most of my work is photojournalistic for NASA and I will touch on the transition to working in a more high speed\, news-oriented position\, versus the freelance portrait and event photography that I was used to. DESCRIPTION:Colena’s portrait by Gwen Flowers\nThis meeting has been Cancelled\nMembers’ Forum March 24\, 2020 – Egypt: Cairo and Points South\, Colena Turner \nSince high school\, Colena has enjoyed taking pictures.  With her film camera\, she became the family photographer for get-togethers.  In 2003\, she purchased her first digital camera and has expanded her interests to nature\, macro\, abstract\, portrait\, event and street photography.  Colena has used several Nikon DSLRs including D90 and D7100. In 2016\, looking for a lighter and smaller camera to take on a cruise\, she purchased a Fujifilm X-E2.  She has since added a Fujifilm X-T2 to her camera bag and subsequently sold all of her Nikon equipment.  \nShe joined NVPS in February 2012 and has served as coordinator for Members’ Gallery and Ask Me A Question table.  As a volunteer photographer\, Colena has shared her talent with the Professional Woman’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, Library of Congress National Book Festival\, Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, Honor Flight and Reston Association.  For the past ten years\, she has served in the Photography Ministry at her place of worship\, Heritage Fellowship Church. Colena continues to learn about the art of photography through workshops. \nFor Cairo and Points South\, Colena will share highlights of her eleven-day trip to Egypt with her husband. \n

SUMMARY:Competition: Cancelled - No Meeting - “No Theme” with Judge Mark Van Bergh
DESCRIPTION:This meeting has been cancelled. \nMark Van Bergh is a Washington\, D.C. area attorney and photographer.  His photographic interests are varied\, ranging from a passion for nature and wildlife photography\, to travel\, people\, weddings\, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other events.  Beyond the Washington beltway\, Mark’s photographic pursuits have taken him throughout the United States\, including many of our National Parks and wildlife refuges\, to Canada\, Costa Rica\, Europe (east and west)\, many sub-Sahara African nations (Botswana\, Kenya\, Namibia\, Rwanda\, South Africa\, Tanzania and Zambia)\, Japan\, China\, Iceland and Antarctica.  Mark has had photographs displayed at the Foundry Gallery in Washington\, the Washington School of Photography\, and photographic retailers. DESCRIPTION:This field trip has been Cancelled!\nWhen: Saturday\, March 14\, 2020\, at 10:00 a.m \nWhere: Luray Caverns \n101 Cave Hill Rd\, Luray\, VA 22835 \nField Trip Leader: Jim Sinsheimer \nJoin NVPS for an unearthly experience to the Luray Caverns March 14\, 2020! We will experience cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high\, towering stone formations\, and natural wonders at every turn. While tripods are not allowed\, with the proper camera settings you will be able to achieve wonderful results. \nIn March it is hard to know what the weather will be\, but it won’t matter to us. The caverns are a constant 54 degrees with very high humidity which makes it feel more like 65 degrees. Some people prefer a light jacket while touring the caverns. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. \nWe will meet at the Visitor Center in the morning at 10:00 a.m. Carpooling will be encouraged since from the Firehouse where we meet it’s at least a 1.5-hour drive. \nIf you are planning to join us you will be able to purchase your ticket online at Luray Caverns Ticket Sales. Better yet\, if we get 20 confirmed participants\, we will be able to get a group rate. General admission includes Luray Caverns\, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum\, Toy Town Junction\, and the Luray Valley Museum. \nWe are also planning to meet for lunch following the field trip someplace close by in the town of Luray. SUMMARY:Education & Training: An Overview of Landscape Photography with James Norman
DESCRIPTION:Landscape photography gives us opportunities to visit beautiful locations\, see amazing sights\, and even bring home and share a small portion of what we experience.  And you don’t need to travel to another continent or lug a backpack full of heavy\, expensive gear to find and capture striking images.  With minimal equipment and your own creative enthusiasm\, landscape photography will reward you with both images and memories.\n \nJim will provide some suggestions on how you can make the most of your landscape opportunities — planning and preparation\, suggested equipment\, composition\, exposure\, and more. The emphasis of this presentation is fieldwork; processing\, as important as it is\, will be discussed only in passing.\n \nJim is a long‑time member of NVPS\, as well as the Loudoun Photo Club\, NANPA\, and the Alaska Society of Outdoor and Nature Photographers\, and most of his photography centers on landscapes.\n \nSeveral of Jim’s recent landscape photos:
