For the past 25 years\, she has traveled the world in search of her favorite subjects – landscapes\, nature close-ups\, interesting architectural details and abstracts. \n\n\n\nMary Louise’s photography is in private\, university and corporate collections in over 40 states and is exhibited nationally through art shows\, galleries and shops. Her images have been used in calendars\, magazines\, books and websites including the National Parks Magazine and various projects with National Geographic maps. In 2020 she was awarded the distinction of “Master Artisan in Fine Art Photography” by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen\, in recognition of achievement in the three benchmarks of excellence in craftsmanship\, resolved design and unique voice. \n\n\n\nMary Louise has been a speaker at photography conferences and is a regular competition judge and speaker for photography clubs from the Carolinas to the Royal Photographic Society in England. DESCRIPTION:Library of Congress \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor our December field trip\, we will explore one of the most iconic and photogenic interiors in Washington\, DC—the Library of Congress. The Jefferson Building is a masterpiece of Beaux-Arts architecture\, filled with soaring ceilings\, marble staircases\, mosaics\, and murals. In December\, the Library is beautifully adorned with holiday decorations\, including a grand Christmas tree in the Great Hall. The seasonal touches add warmth and color to the already stunning architecture\, offering unique opportunities to capture both the historic grandeur and the holiday spirit. This trip is perfect for those who enjoy photographing symmetry\, patterns\, and festive details in a historic setting. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, December 13\, 2025\, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.We will meet at the Library of Congress Jefferson Building entrance 10 minutes before opening time (9:50 a.m.)\, so that we can enter together. The entrance is on First St SE between Independence and East Capitol. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free. However\, timed-entry passes are required and must be reserved in advance through the Library of Congress website. Details can be found here: https://www.loc.gov/visit/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere:Library of Congress – Jefferson Building10 First Street SEWashington\, DC 20540 \n\n\n\nTwo-hour metered street parking is available in DC on Saturdays. If using Metro\, the closest station is Capitol South Station (orange/silver/blue line) on First Street SE. The First and C Street entrance is approximately one and a half blocks south of the Library of Congress on First Street SE. \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin photographing the awe-inspiring spaces in the Great Hall\, including the holiday tree\, and move through the building to take advantage of the many photo opportunities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n\nA wide-angle lens (16–35mm) will be useful for capturing the grand spaces and impressive architecture.\n\n\n\nA normal zoom lens (e.g.\, 24–105mm\, 24-200mm) may be useful for capturing architectural details and murals.\n\n\n\nTripods are not permitted inside the library.\n\n\n\nBe mindful of low-light conditions indoors; a fast lens or higher ISO settings will help.\n\n\n\n\nAfter our photography session\, members are welcome to gather informally at Pete’s Diner for food and conversation. DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nLike most NVPS members\, Stan\, Judy\, and Bill have entered countless photo competitions and have had numerous favorite images shot down by judges. It is important to pay attention to detail when taking a photo and processing it. But it is also important to remember the reason why you took the photo\, what was it that caught your eye\, did you convey that vision to the viewer. \n\n\n\nThe NVPS Anonymous Critique is a great opportunity to get feedback on your images.  The process is anonymous\, so you have nothing to lose.  Examples of the kinds of images you might want to submit for critique include: \n\n\n\n\nImages you think are keepers but may need a little help;\n\n\n\nExperiments with new processing techniques; and\n\n\n\nImages you are considering for competition.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe sole purpose of the anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you identify yourself by making comments or asking questions about your images during the Zoom session. \n\n\n\nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Monday\, November 24\, 2025\, (this is a change to the earlier announced date) to allow time for David Crooks to anonymize the images and for Stan\, Judy\, and Bill to review them before the December 9 meeting. \n\n\n\nSubmitting Images\n\n\n\nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, December 2\, 2025 to allow time for reviewing the images before the December 9 meeting. \n\n\n\nYou may submit up to three images to this NVPS Dropbox folder:  https://www.dropbox.com/request/AqHnGlwnD97MnW8LUFDr \n\n\n\nResize Your Image(s)\n\n\n\nSize images the same way as for our monthly competitions\, that is\, not to exceed 1400 pixels horizontally or 1050 pixels vertically.  Image resolution should be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI). But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology\, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the scuba gear\, and when he joined NVPS\, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography. Still\, nature remained a driving force behind his images. \n\n\n\nSince joining the club\, Stan has “volunteered” for Field Trips (twice)\, Competitions\, and Mentoring\, and is a past President. This will be his fourth Anonymous Critique. \n\n\n\nFor the past several years Stan has helped lead photo tours in Washington State\, Alaska\, Yellowstone National Park\, New Mexico\, and Florida. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\nJudy enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts.  She has won several awards\, including the grand prize in the Washington Post’s 2022 Travel Photography Contest. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and The Art League Gallery of Alexandria\, Va. Her web site is Judy Guenther Photography. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBill Millhouser\n\n\n\nBill became interested in Photography in the mid 1970s\, but his deep dive into all things photography skyrocketed when he joined NVPS in 2010. Bill is an avid bird\, wildlife\, and travel photographer\, and his trips overseas have often combined birdwatching and photography. Over the years he has visited Costa Rica (multiple times)\, Ecuador\, Patagonia\, Kenya\, Tanzania\, South Africa\, the Falkland Islands\, and Iceland. Bill has served as NVPS coordinator for Field Trips\, Competitions\, and Mentoring\, and is a past President.

That is also when she paid more attention to Dr. Seuss’s books with playful\, simple texts and illustrations with powerful messages on success within us\, life’s inevitable highs and lows\, devotion\, perseverance\, and resilience. The bubbles are beautiful\, delicate\, fragile\, yet resilient despite sun\, heat\, wind and cold. \n\n\n\nIn her portfolio project A Story with Bubbles\, the intent was to symbolize the human struggle and determination to grow and to achieve\, despite the obstacles we must overcome\, but at the same time appreciate the joy and the humor along the journey. \n\n\n\nBut it doesn’t have to be that deep. Bubbles are an easy\, versatile and fun subject to photograph and most importantly anytime\, anywhere. In addition\, you can make your own bubble mixture\, or you can buy it in the store. You can use a wand or a bubble blowing machine. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In Person) (Prints) 65 Years of Making Images with Alan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is a little different from the usual.  It is a curated collection of eighteen of the thousands of images Alan has created over the time he has been engaged in photography. Creation years range from 1960 to 2025\, and the source media ranges from drugstore prints to Polaroids to slides to digital images. In this presentation\, he includes the year made\, the location\, and the type/brand/model of his camera.        \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlan’s interest in photography was encouraged in ninth grade by a science teacher who taught him the art of film developing.  At that time\, he was using a Kodak Brownie. In college and working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper\, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant\, crisp pictures.  But encouraged by a classmate and photographer\, Alan got access to the college’s darkroom\, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request. His camera was a Russian-made TTL model T-32.  His high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR\, and that became Alan’s Holy Grail.  However\, financial considerations dictated that Alan’s first true SLR was a Minolta SRT-101. Later\, he upgraded to a Minolta X700. In 2003.  Alan’s brother-in-law was getting married\, and Alan was the photographer.  An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100.   It was love at first click!  Since then\, Alan has had a D100\, D200\, D300\, D800\, D810\, and for the past eight years\, D850. A member of NVPS for the past 13 years\, Alan still considers himself more of a photojournalist than an art photographer.

DESCRIPTION:Brian\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. \n\n\n\nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes. When filming his favorite subject\, the human condition\, he tells the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. In addition to his favorite genres\, Brian Zwit dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. Brian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic. He is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and other photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy-to-understand ways. Brian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking\, and just enjoy life. \n\n\n\nBrian’s website has Images by Brian J Zwit. Brian has been a speaker for NVPS and a frequent reviewer for the Portfolio Project’s final reviews.

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nGeorge Hogeman has been interested in astronomy longer than he has been a photographer. One of his early jobs included teaching astronomy and running a small planetarium at a Connecticut boarding school. He enjoys tracing the constellations\, tracking the planets and identifying deep space objects.  He also doesn’t forget observing the Moon and Sun. He now volunteers in the Astronomy Education Department at the National Air & Space Museum and shares his small telescope with dozens of families who attend the monthly star gazing events at Udvar-Hazy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, George will share some of his photographs and demonstrate the open-source program “Stellarium” which is an easy way to see what there is to see on a given night. He will also bring in his SeeStar S50 which is a $549 combined telescope and camera which can capture remarkable images of the Moon\, the Sun and distant galaxies even from our local rather light-polluted skies. George is also a member of the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) and can share details of the dark sky observing sites that club membership enables.  \n\n\n\nHe looks forward to a rich discussion about astrophotography with NVPS members! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll photos taken by George Hogeman

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nAnnalise Kaylor is a wildlife photographer and science photojournalist whose work has taken her on assignments to 40 countries (and counting!) around the world. \n\n\n\nWith an emphasis on narrative-driven documentary photography\, Annalise’s photo andvideo work has been seen in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, AudubonMagazine\, and the Associated Press\, as well as PBS\, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver\, Great Big Story\, and the Discovery Channel. She also partners with NGOs and non-profitsfor their visual storytelling\, including The Nature Conservancy\, charity:water\, and Habitatfor Humanity International. \n\n\n\nAnnalise’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout North America\, South America\, and her photographs are part of the permanent collections of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library\, the World Health Organization\, and the United Nations. Her photography is part of the Planet Ocean exhibit at Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany that opened in March of 2024 and is currently being prepared for an extended European tour. \n\n\n\nAnnalise is also the co-creator of the Photo WILD podcast\, which braids together the artand science of wildlife photography\, and a contributing writer for the publication of the same name. She is also a keynote speaker at the 2026 Mid-Atlantic PhotoVisions Conference.

DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\nJoan Barker\n\n\n\nJoan Barker offers a kaleidoscope of her time with flowers in the last three years. She shares a wonderful adventure of beauty. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nJoan joined NVPS in 2015.   \n\n\n\nAlthough she has always enjoyed photographing family and places she visited\, she was not sure that she would enjoy being a part of a photography club. Joan was using a point and shoot camera at the time and knew nothing about F stop\, Shutter Speed\, or ISO.  Needless to say Joan has learned a lot in the past 10 years and now shoots with the mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \n\n\n\nShe enjoys shooting landscapes\, flowers\, and abstracts. She loves doing post processing on the computer as it encourages her creative juices. Four years ago she joined St. Stephens United Methodist Church’s photography ministry enabling her to branch out in photography as well as offering assistance in documenting happenings at the church.  \n\n\n\nJoan was an educator and taught elementary school before her children were born. After kids\, she chose part time teaching and eventually administration in Early Childhood.  \n\n\n\nYes\, Joan is happy she joined NVPS as the group has inspired her to try new techniques and enabled her to enjoy the works of so many excellent photographers. \n\n\n\nPhotos taken by Joan Barker:

Prior to the advent of YouTube and digital cameras\, he developed expertise in efficiently setting up 35 mm slide cameras and adapting to challenging lighting conditions presented by microscopes\, endoscopes\, and otoscopes\, utilizing a range of film cameras. \n\n\n\nTransition to Creativity After Retirement \n\n\n\nAfter retiring in 2012\, an entirely new skill set became necessary. This period marked a journey into exploring and discovering imaginative approaches to building composites and abstracts. \n\n\n\nA New Artistic Direction \n\n\n\nThe pursuit of creative techniques led to the development of innovative ways to transform ordinary photos. Emphasis was placed on finding fresh perspectives and methods to enhance images beyond their original form.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In Person) (Print) - Sports Action Photography with Gary Rubin
DESCRIPTION:Bio/Description:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Rubin’s photography journey began in middle school with his dad’s Minolta SRT-101. He shot primarily black-and-white film through high school and into college\, where he was a photographer and photo editor for his college yearbook. He set photography aside for a few years after college and made the move to digital photography about 20 years ago to document and share his kids’ activities and adventures with family members. About 10 years ago\, Gary began to return to photography as a hobby\, shooting wherever family activities and vacations took him. He started getting more serious about sports photography thanks to his kids’ involvement in a variety of sports. He found in particular that watching his son’s wrestling matches through a DSLR eyepiece provided emotional distance and made the matches much less stressful. While he continues to shoot a variety of subjects and genres\, the vast majority of his shutter clicks are spent capturing sports. \n\n\n\nGary is currently a freelance and volunteer sports action photographer. He can often be found at Falls Church High School\, where he volunteers on behalf of the Athletic Boosters and also provides sports action photos for sale as team fundraisers. A highlight of his sports photography experience was being classified as a staff member during the post-COVID return to sports when spectators were still unable to attend games. During those shortened seasons he photographed every sport at FCHS and allowed the Boosters to provide parents and family members with images of their athletes competing. Gary’s preferred style is to shoot and crop tight to give viewers a feeling of being in the midst of the action and to provide a perspective that can’t be seen from the bleachers. He primarily shoots on a Nikon Z6iii and D5. His current favorite lens is a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8. He is a 2nd-year member of NVPS.   \n\n\n\nThe photos selected for this Members’ Gallery span a variety of sports and are representative of Gary’s style\, bringing the audience into the action while balancing peak-of-action with story-telling and emotion. DESCRIPTION:Anja Hitzenberger\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAnja Hitzenberger is a photographer\, filmmaker\, consultant\, and educator. She is the founder of StrudelmediaLive\, an educational platform that offers live online photography classes and more to people around the world. Anja studied in the Creative Practice full–time program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City and has been on the faculty there since 2009. She is dedicated to working with people from different cultures across the globe. \n\n\n\nHer work has been exhibited in solo and group shows\, film festivals\, and on theater stages throughout Europe\, the United States\, South America\, and Asia. Her photography has been published internationally\, and is a part of both private and institutional collections\, including the International Center of Photography. She has received numerous artistic grants\, and has been awarded residencies in Rome\, Paris\, Warsaw\, Beijing\, and Tainan (Taiwan). A focus of her activities has been working with live performance\, including producing a multimedia piece that toured in New York City\, Austria\, and Korea. \n\n\n\nAnja has been teaching live online photography classes since 2015\, as well as in–person workshops at organizations in New York\, Europe\, China\, and Taiwan\, including C/O Berlin\, Three Shadows (Beijing)\, Westlicht Museum (Vienna)\, and FJUM (Forum for Journalism and Media–Vienna). SUMMARY:Education & Training (In Person):  Five Minutes to Better Photos with Jeff Hancock
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Hancock\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJeff Hancock has been a detachable lens photographer since 1987. His first professional gig was for a Surfer in Hawaii who paid him $20 for a roll of film\, and he’s been underpaid ever since. He’s now the official photographer for the Office of Historic Alexandria\, The Mike O’Meara Show Podcast\, Die Laughing Productions\, and Dangerboy\, a rock and roll cover band.   \n\n\n\nNone of this pays enough for him to quit his day job in Data Visualization. He photographs everything in front of him that looks interesting and sometimes seeks out interesting things to stand in front of to make photographs. He’s been a member of NVPS since 2007.   \n\n\n\nYou can see his work\, paid and otherwise\, at https://www.jeffhancockphotography.com/. \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nDo you spend too much time editing your images?  Would you like to get great (ok\, acceptable) results in five minutes or less per photo? Come to NVPS on Tuesday\, October 14th\, to see how Jeff makes the magic happen. Send in some RAW\, unprocessed images.  Jeff will import them into Lightroom (explaining his workflow process while he does it) and will edit them with Lightroom and Topaz Photo AI (where necessary). Jeff has to process hundreds of event photos\, and he usually finishes editing them the next day. He’s not crafting each one into art\, but they are usually much better than they were straight out of the camera. Time is money when you’re getting paid a flat fee\, so the less time you spend processing photos\, the higher your hourly rate. Even if you don’t need to edit hundreds of photos\, saving time processing will give you time to shoot more photos. \n\n\n\nTo Submit Photos\n\n\n\nIf you have some images that you would like Jeff to edit during the October 14 session\, please submit RAW out–of–the camera images (no jpegs) no later than October 14 at 4 PM (yes\, the day of the event!) by following the instructions at NVPS Dropbox.  Dropbox will ask for your name and an email address.  The email address will be used to notify you that the upload of your file was successful.  Though we can not configure Dropbox to refrain from asking for your email address\, it appears Dropbox does not validate email addresses.  \n\n\n\nNote that Jeff might not be able to get to all the submitted images. \n\n\n\nPhotos taken by Jeff Hancock:

DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThis program will explore the beauty of imperfect and/or unconventional subjects. As nature photographers we often seek out the flowers\, leaves and such that are perfect\, with no blemishes or defects. This program highlights subjects that are not perfect\, such as flowers that have character\, double headed flowers\, decaying fall leaves\, the deformed coneflower that stands out as flawed and hence different and beautiful\, rust as it creates abstract patterns amidst the decay\, etc. We will also explore the concept of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of everyday life\, things that might be overlooked. As purveyors of rust and decay we appreciate the perseverance and beauty of “life after humans” as cars and equipment falls apart and succumbs to oxidation and decay. Wabi-Sabi teaches us to find beauty in everyday life. It is a kind of anti-aesthetic\, an alternative to the dominating discriminatory ideas we hold about beauty. “Wabi means a beauty of elegant imperfection. Sabi means aloneness. Together\, they suggest the beauty of ‘the withered\, weathered\, tarnished\, scarred\, intimate\, coarse\, earthly\, evanescent\, tentative\, ephemeral.’ ~ Crispin Sartwell\, Six Names of Beauty. It is a way of honoring that everything is impermanent\, and we are always in a state of both becoming and falling away. It is used to describe a particular philosophy that beauty can be found in the old\, the everyday\, the imperfect. Wabi Sabi applies to more than nature and the seasons of change and decay\, but it also to the “Life after Humans” arena or UrbEx (urban exploration). DESCRIPTION:Exercise your creative side\, playing with patterns\, textures\, shapes and colors in abstract and still life photography!  Bring your camera\, tripod\, remote trigger or cable release (if you have one)\, lenses (macro if you have one)\, and a smartphone (or iPad).  A headlamp with a red light option would also be useful\, as we will spend much of the evening photographing with the fire hall lights turned out.  We will supply tools and subjects for light painting and abstract photography with oil/water and water droplet refraction.  We will also have light tables and product box setups for composing still life subjects.  If you have something that you think others in the club might enjoy photographing\, please bring it!

DESCRIPTION:Bio/Description: \n\n\n\nGary Rubin\n\n\n\nGary Rubin is a 2nd-year member of NPVS. His photography journey began in middle school with his dad’s Minolta SRT-101. He shot primarily black-and-white film through high school and into college\, where he was a photographer and photo editor for his college yearbook. He set photography aside for a few years after college and later made the move to digital photography about 20 years ago to document and share his kids’ activities and adventures with family members. About 10 years ago\, Gary began to return to photography as a hobby\, shooting wherever family activities and vacations took him.   \n\n\n\nAs with many digital photographers\, Gary did a majority of his processing using Adobe Lightroom. Following an Adobe price increase around 2020\, Gary began looking for subscription-free processing options and came across DxO PhotoLab and related products. DxO’s excellent denoising capabilities filled a need when processing high-school sports photos\, with DxO’s purchase of the Nik Collection tools also contributing to Gary’s decision to give DxO a try. Five years later\, Gary is a happy user of DxO PhotoLab and Nik Collection tools and administers a 3800-member Facebook group for DxO users.  \n\n\n\nDuring this Member’s Forum\, Gary will provide an introduction to DxO’s PhotoLab\, PureRaw\, and Nik Collection software tools. He will also provide a discount code should anyone be interested in purchasing DxO software.

DESCRIPTION:Art & Deb Rose\n\n\n\nIn June of 2024 Art and Deb made their first trip to Cuba. They were so taken the beauty of the country and kindness of the Cuban people\, they returned for a second visit in November. Tonight’s gallery is a collection of their favorite memories and experiences during their time traveling through Havana\, the southern coast and the countryside in Vinales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt and Deb’s interest in photography began over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, they have been living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography. They have travelled extensively through North\, Central and South America including Cuba\, the Panama Canal\, Costa Rica\, Galapagos\, Ecuador\, Peru and Machu Picchu. Travels through Europe and Asia include Japan\, Singapore\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Hong Kong\, Italy\, Greece and Malta. They enjoy all types of photography encountered on their travels: landscape\, street\, wildlife\, macro\, architectural\, night sky and every flavor in-between. \n\n\n\nMembers of NVPS since 2018\, Art and Deb enjoy learning and developing their skills to enhance their photography. Deb enjoys creating photo artistic pieces with her images and writes their travel blog\, Boarding Group 2. Art enjoys applying new techniques to macro\, landscape\, wildlife and still-life photos.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) (Prints) A Talk on the Wild Side with Eva Lanyi
DESCRIPTION:Eva was about 11 years old when her parents gave her a camera\,  a Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  With it\, she learned the basics of photography\, and then went on to use her father’s old steel Voigtlaender camera (she still has it\, too) for more formal photography training.   In 2013\, she started learning digital photography and processing\, an ongoing effort that has happily occupied much of her time since then.  NVPS has been integral to her photo education.  She has served as coordinator for Education and Training and\, currently\, for Members’ Gallery. \n\n\n\nNature photography\, including all kinds of wildlife\, is Eva’s favorite subject\, because she enjoys being outdoors as much as possible.  She also wants to contribute\, in an admittedly small way\, to preserving the natural world through her images.  So much of it is under threat. \n\n\n\nIn the last few years\, Eva has especially enjoyed photographing animals and birds in ways that demonstrate how much they communicate without words as we understand them. Anger\, fear\, love\, and fun\, for example\, are some of the sentiments they seem to express in their own ways.  Her prints will illustrate the eloquence of animal and bird language as she has experienced it.

SUMMARY:Education & Training (In Person):  Working the Scene in Landscape Photography with Judy Graham
DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life. She retired March 1\, 2018\, after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 with the goal of meeting local photographers\, doing more local photography\, and learning more about the art of photography. Judy has served in various Board positions for NVPS\, including President for the 2021-2022 club year. \n\n\n\nJudy is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in recent years she has expanded her travel to include such places as Alaska\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Ireland\, and Norway. She does not let the cold or bad weather stop her. \n\n\n\nJudy joined the Capital Photography Center as an instructor in September 2022. She shares her passion for landscape photography and teaching novice to intermediate photographers though the Year of CPC program. \n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nIn landscape photography\, “working the scene” refers to the process of carefully exploring and adjusting various elements within a location to capture the most compelling image. It involves moving around\, experimenting with different angles\, perspectives\, and focal lengths\, and considering the changing light conditions. Judy’s E&T presentation will explore various techniques from moving your feet to changing your lens to achieve your creative vision. SUMMARY:Programs:  (Zoom) Getting Creative with the Cyanotype Alternative Photographic Process with Mary Louise Ravese
DESCRIPTION:Mary Louise Ravese\n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nCyanotype is a simple photographic printing process that creates an archival blue and white print. The cyanotype process was invented in the 1840s and is relatively easy and inexpensive to do at home. The chemicals involved are even safe enough to be rinsed down the drain once diluted. In the basic process\, organic material (paper\, fabric\, etc.) is coated using a light sensitive solution of iron compounds. Objects and/or film negatives are placed on the material and then exposed to UV light (sunlight or UV lamp) to develop the image. In the final step\, the exposed material is rinsed revealing an archival white print on a “Prussian Blue” background. \n\n\n\nA lot of creativity can be interjected into this basic process to produce even more interesting one-of-a-kind prints. For example\, the color of the print can be altered by adjusting the proportions of the chemical mix\, by toning the rinsed print\, or by working with a variety of additives like vinegar\, or spices like turmeric. The texture of the print can be enhanced by adding things like salt or soap bubbles during the exposure stage. Layering objects on the light sensitive material can increase the 3-dimensionality of the print. Furthermore\, you’ll have fun getting photographic-like results even without a camera. For those interested in taking the process further\, photographs of a cyanotype print at different stages can be blended together in Photoshop to create stunning composite images. \n\n\n\nPhotographer Mary Louise Ravese of Bella Vista Photography is always on the lookout for ways to be creative with her photography practice. In this presentation she will discuss her foray into the cyanotype process for a new fine art photographic project. In the process you will get insights into how different effects are achieved and perhaps be inspired to try making cyanotypes of your own. The August field trip is to Sky Meadows State Park\, Turner Pond entrance\, an International Dark Sky Park where “Astronomical Observation” is allowed between dusk and 2:00 AM any clear evening.This is a “learning” field trip\, especially for those of us that have not done Dark Sky photography before.
