SUMMARY:Programs: Ethical Wildlife Photography with Kristi Odom
DESCRIPTION:In her presentation\, Kristi will discuss things related to bird and wildlife photography\, from lenses to camera choices\, autofocus settings\, getting great shots\, and how to do it ethically. She will talk about gear\, behavior (the wildlife as well as our own)\, and respect. For instance\, how close is too close? How do you know if a bird or wild animal is disturbed by human presence or activity? \nKristi Odom is an internationally acclaimed photographer\, a Nikon Ambassador\, an associate fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers\, and a motivational speaker.  With a background in sports\, concerts\, and wedding photography\, she now works solely on her biggest passion\, which is wildlife.  A photographer and filmmaker\, her work focuses on connecting people emotionally to animals and celebrating those who have a connection to the natural world.  While she is based in Denver Colorado\, she runs an adventure company with her husband\, taking photographers all around the world\, providing guests with life-changing experiences\, while teaching advanced photo skills.  \nHer accolades include over 60 international photography awards including 2 Nature’s Best Photography awards\, which exhibited her images at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.  Her work has appeared either online and/or in print for the following clients: National Geographic\, Nikon\, Forbes\, Rollingstone\, Microsoft and Outside Magazine. \nKristi OdomPhotographer / Conservationist / Public Speaker / Nikon Ambassadorwww.kristiodom.com

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – The Art of Building Photography with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:Construction photography is a subject that not many photographers get at chance to explore.  For me\, however\, it came as an integral part of my career in architecture and construction project management. My interest in photography paralleled my architectural education during which I documented most of my college projects. As my career developed\, so did my interest and fascination with photographing not only the finished projects\, but the process of creating them as well.  \nI started to record the process in a documentary form\, but soon saw the potential to go beyond to capture the incredible images of light\, color\, form\, texture\, and composition that the construction process can produce. The images can be of materials\, machinery\, and equipment; and of course\, the trades people themselves. \nCapturing images on a construction site is a challenge on two levels – technical and interpersonal. The technical challenge is being at the right place\, at the right time\, with the right light. Understanding the construction sequence is of course very helpful. The pace can be fast and often sporadic\, so there’s no time for lighting setups\, umbrellas\, or other assisted illumination.  You must use what is there. Equipment needs to be simple and flexible. In the early film years\, this was a challenge without quality zoom lenses. So\, I carried two cameras with different lenses – one normal and one telephoto. As digital photography developed\, I was able to simplify this to one camera and two lenses. \nDeveloping a level of familiarity and trust with the construction team is as important as the technical aspects. The craftsmen are at first suspicious of a photographer in their midst– they are concerned that the pictures will be used to show them doing something wrong. So\, I start by being as inconspicuous as possible until my presence is accepted.  It helps to give trades people a print of their picture – they love to show their families how they look at work. \nOf course\, I’ve shared these images with the architects and builders I’ve worked with. Some of these images were published in the October 2011 edition of Lenswork. I hope you will enjoy them too.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: People\, Places and Things with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:People\, Places and Things (but not in that order!) \nThis presentation is broken into three parts:  People (street photography)\, Things (that caught my eye) and Places (landscapes and places) from our travels over the last few years. \nGreg Smith Bio: \nEnthusiast to Opportunist to Hobbyist to “Something More”? \nGreg became familiar with photography from an early age.  His father\, serving in Ireland and Cyprus\, took many pictures throughout their many travels\, always considering angles and framing the subjects when he could\, and describing what and why as he did so.  Many a slide show was enjoyed!  \nGreg got his first SLR (Minolta) prior to deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures.  However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from 3 blocks away to get it all in!  He secured his lens at the Navy Exchange in Naples\, and so the enthusiast was hooked. \nWhen Greg’s wife upgraded her camera\, he took over her Nikon 5600 and began taking pictures again.  He was able to have a cup of coffee with a retired Marine who introduced him to NVPS\, showing him several amazing award-winning photographs.  K-12 invited Greg to visit a club meeting\, which he did\, along with his wife\, and shortly after they joined. \nSince joining NVPS he has enjoyed the inspiration of seeing amazing pictures\, the creativity of other members and the focused opportunities afforded by the themed competitions.   Taking more pictures led to upgrading to a Nikon D750\, and with the encouragement of his wife\, adopted shooting primarily in manual mode.  \nNow Greg enjoys shooting whatever he happens upon: birds and landscapes primarily\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity.  He is becoming more purposeful in his photography\, moving from just shooting snapshots to thinking about compositions and seeking out better environments for capturing images.  He and his wife Gitta are anticipating an RV trip to Denver\, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks\, with many stops along the way\, and hopefully will have many opportunities to expand his skills.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Getting to Know You with Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan
DESCRIPTION:This evening will be an NVPS first: a Group Member’s Gallery featuring three of our newer and new to gallery presentation members. Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan present three mini Member’s Galleries. \nSusan Blalock \nSusan got her love of photography from her grandfather and helped him develop photos for family holiday cards in his home darkroom which was located a closet under the stairs.  She purchased a digital camera several years ago and the pandemic gave her the opportunity to spend more time taking photos.  Finding NVPS was quite the happy accident for Susan when she started to look for a local camera club to join.  NVPS’ weekly meetings\, variety of speakers\, field trips\, and the mentor program were all interesting and last winter she decided to join the Club.  Since the Fall Susan has been working with mentor Will Friedman and so far their focus has been working on black and white images.  Willa’s guidance has helped Susan to improve how she sees images and improved the tonal range of her images.  Susan is still very much a “newbie” and she enjoys nature photography\, long exposure\, and macro\, but is not opposed to giving any genre a try. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nSuzy McIntire \nSuzy has had two wonderful mentors since she joined NVPS in 2019: Willa Friedman and Stan Bysshe. She can’t thank them enough for help to learn her Fuji\, how to shoot in RAW and use HDR and LightRoom\, how to choose a picture for competition\, and the importance of “knowing her bird.” There was excellent discussion of issues around street photography\, and some pictures even got competition awards\, although not when she didn’t listen to Willa. \n\n\n\n\n\nTerri Lannigan \nTerri was introduced to photography by her father\, an avid photographer of nature\, trains and automobiles.  They spent many hours hiking and capturing photos\, mostly landscape\, with her trusty Pentax K1000.  The cost of film was prohibitive during college and early professional years\, and photography fell by the wayside.  With the advent of digital photography\, and with young children\, Terri again picked up the camera for family events and vacations.  As the kids got older\, and time was more available to return to hiking and to devote to the craft of photography\, Terri was lucky to be encouraged by Georgette Grossman to join NVPS.  She hasn’t looked back!  Originally\, thinking that she would focus on mammals and landscape\, she found that vision difficult to realize for short weekend jaunts and ended up developing a love of birds\, insects and tree frogs.  NVPS has been a huge contributor to her growth as a photographer and she is looking forward to continuing to learn and grow through the many resources available here.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:If you missed our Fall 2020 trip to visit the Monuments at Night\, you’re in luck.  Our April field trip will return to the monuments at (or just after) peak cherry blossom season.  Lots of photographers visit this time of year\, but what many don’t know is that the monuments are best viewed after sunset.  This is a wonderful trip for all levels of photographers\, especially beginners. \nWhat: \nThe cherry blossoms will be well underway and Spring will be in the air.  We’ll visit the World War II Memorial\, Vietnam War Memorials\, Korean War Memorial\, Lincoln Memorial and other nearby sites.  Feel free to see and do as much as you want.  There really is too much to see in one night. \nPlease note\, the National Cherry Blossom Festival will be in full swing.  In fact\, there is a parade on the morning of April 9 (10am) along Constitution Ave.  There is also a street festival on Pennsylvania Ave between 3rd and 7th St. until 6pm.  Our activities will not be impacted\, but this could impede your chances at getting the perfect parking spot. \nTripods inside the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial are prohibited.  Tripods are allowed in most outdoor areas\, however\, if a park ranger asks you to move or pick up your tripod\, it will be because you’re set up in a high traffic area. \nSunset is at 7:40 p.m. (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nSturdy tripod\nLeave your super telephotos and fast glass at home.\nRemote shutter or cable release will be useful to prevent camera shake.\nGraduated filters are optional for sunset shots.\nFlash and or flashlight is optional.\nYour best walking shoes.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 9\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p. mRain date on Sunday\, April 10\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet at the World War II Memorial for what we hope will be a wonderful sunset behind the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool.  When that’s done\, we’ll travel West along the Reflecting Pool to visit the Vietnam War Memorials\, Lincoln Memorial\, and Korean War Memorial.  We’ll also go behind the Lincoln Memorial to view the newly rehabilitated Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Rosslyn skyline. \nIf there is enough interest\, Steve will be willing to lead another another group from our meeting spot at the WW2 Memorial to the Tidal Basin visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial\, FDR Memorial\, and finish at the Jefferson Memorial. \nMetered parking is in effect from 7am-8pm on Ohio Dr. SW.  The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total).  Please note that the cherry blossom festival will still be going on so the parking lot at the Tidal Basin Paddle Boats will probably be filled with equipment and closed to the public.  The parking lots A\, B\, and C along Ohio Dr just past the 14 St. overpass should be an option.  The metro blue and orange lines will also service Smithsonian and Foggy Bottom which are the nearest stops to our field trip. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy  Rena Schild and Steven Glintz.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS galleries. \nField Trip: DC Monuments\, Sep 2020Field-Trip: DC at Night\, Dec 2014

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Close to Home with Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:For the past two years\, because of the pandemic\, Willa has been photographing very close to home. This is an overview of the parks in the vicinity and almost all the pictures were taken in the last two years. The only exception that she can think of is the river otter at Huntley Meadows\, but they are unusual and Willa wanted to show what might be seen in these places. \nWilla’s first job after college was as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, She had a choice of several summer projects—filing\, cleaning animal cages or photographing wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools. She claimed to be able to do photography and came home with a camera. Bob taught her everything she needed to know over the following weekend and her work was published. Bob still claims to have taught her everything she knows.\n\nWilla has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, and Santa Fe Workshop. She has also had extensive courses in Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. She has been a member of NVPS since 2004 and has learned  a great deal from the members and speakers. She is currently coordinator for the solo shows at Beanetics\, or will be when they re-open. \nHer work is on display at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and she has an image in the permanent collection of the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts and has had images published in the Northern Virginia Review  and District Lines and has had solo shows at 1st Stage and Beanetics Coffee Rosters in Annandale and has been  a guest artist at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda. \n

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Max Waugh – Theme: “Abstracts”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Abstract” within the past three (3) years \nAbstracts: An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer\, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects\, or it may involve the use of color\, light\, shadow\, texture\, shape and/or form to convey a feeling\, sensation or impression. Close ups of common objects\, reflections on moving water are some examples. Generally\, the subject is not readily identifiable. “Basic” post processing is allowed. Software add-ins and tools such as liquify\, textures\, etc. are not allowed. Stacking multiple images\, zooming\, and panning done by the photographer are permitted. This theme is about what the photographer can accomplish in camera not about processing with software tools. \n \nMax has been photographing wildlife\, travel\, and sports professionally for the past two decades. He has received multiple honors in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition (including a win in the Black and White category in 2019)\, and commendations in the Nature’s Best/Windland Smith Rice Awards. Max’s work has appeared in such publications as Africa Geographic and ESPN the Magazine\, and has been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington\, DC\, and the Natural History Museum in London. \nMax leads photo tours in the Pacific Northwest\, Yellowstone and overseas\, with a heavy emphasis on biodiversity and destinations that offer a variety of subject matter. . \nMore information can be found on Max’s website at www.maxwaugh.com.

SUMMARY:Programs: Life in the Chesapeake Bay - Tangier Island\, a Visual Journey with Irene Sacilotto
DESCRIPTION:Irene’s presentation will explore the Tangier Islands\, Virginia located just south of the Maryland line\, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.  It is actually a series of small islands connected by narrow bridges spanning marshes and tidal creeks. From the mainland\, it can only be reached by boat or small plane.  On its narrow roads\, golf carts and bicycles replace cars as the primary mode of transportation.  It is a charming community of shop owners and waterman\, with many inhabitants making their living on the water as did their ancestors\, oystering and crabbing. Recently\, Tangier Island has been the focus of news stories as a possible casualty of climate change and sea level rise as each year flooding on the island becomes more frequent and erosion increases. This presentation is a visual journey\, compiled from photos that I have taken over the years.  It explores life on Tangier and paints a picture of the island\, waterman community\, and the wildlife that inhabits its marshes\, lagoons\, and tidal guts.  Includes tips on photographing the waterman community and wildlife.  \nBIO \nFor more than 35 years\, Irene has shared her photographic experiences and love of nature with thousands of individuals through more than 300 photo classes\, workshops\, lectures\, and tours in both the U.S. and abroad including Kenya\, Iceland\, Newfoundland\, the Falkland Islands\, the Brazilian Pantanal\, South Dakota Badlands\, Bosque del Apache\, Chincoteague NWR\, Tangier Island\, etc.  Program sponsors have included zoos\, nature centers\, camera clubs\, and conservation organizations such as National Wildlife Federation and the Assateague Island Alliance. \nFor many years\, she has taught photography classes at Johns Hopkins University and other educational institutions and have written “How To” articles on nature photography for national publications such as Outdoor Photographer and Birding. \nHer images have appeared in magazines\, calendars\, and books published by National Wildlife Federation\, Natural History Society\, Audubon\, and Sierra Club. Credits include the book\, “Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge\, an Ecological Treasure.”

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – Photographing “Enchantment:” Bosque del Apache and White Sands National Park with Collaboration of NVPS Members
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Nikhil BahlPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\nNew Mexico calls itself the “land of enchantment\,” a name that rings true after visiting its Bosque del Apache and White Sands National Park. Bosque\, famous for bird photography\, and White Sands\, with miles of snow-white gypsum sand dunes\, provided abundant photographic opportunities for seven NVPS members\, led by Nikhil Bahl (http://www.nikhilbahl.com)\, who is well known by the club as a judge and presenter. \nThis Members’ Forum will differ from most others by presenting the photographs of several photographers. While we traveled together during our week in New Mexico\, our images often differ\, reflecting differences in how we saw and captured the scenes of countless birds in flight or wind-blown patterns in the white sands. The NVPS members that were on the trip included: Stan Bysshe\, Walter Keating\, Jerri and Jim McDermott\, Bill Millhouser\, John Thomas\, and Mike Whalen. \n\n\nPhoto by Stan BysshePhoto by Mike Whalen

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: A Family Vacation in South Africa with Kevin Linde
DESCRIPTION:Twenty nine years after leaving South Africa\, Kevin and his family were able to enjoy visiting the country that he grew up in. Southern Africa offers so many photographic opportunities that range from beautiful landscapes to some of the most incredible wildlife on earth. \nKevin was born and raised in Johannesburg\, South Africa and moved to Canada in 1992 where he met his wife\, Debby. In 1998 they moved to Northern Virginia with their 2-year-old son\, Ryan. Their second son\, Jared\, was born in 1999 when they moved into their current home in Fairfax City. Kevin’s eldest son is now working and living in Austin\, TX and his youngest is a senior at the University of Alabama. Kevin currently works as a physical therapist in a private practice clinic\, which he founded in 2003. \nKevin became interested in photography about 16 years ago when he bought his first Canon DSLR. Prior to that he had a Pentax SLR\, which he owned for about 5 years prior to switching to digital. He learned the basics with this camera but was never that interested in photography. The change to digital provided instant feedback\, which allowed him to learn beyond the basics a lot faster. Kevin also enjoys post processing and continues to improve his skills with practice and online learning. He currently uses Canon equipment that he has accumulated over the years. His favorite subject to shoot is motor racing\, which is influenced by his interest in the sport. Not far behind is nature and animals which he was fortunate enough to enjoy while living in South Africa. He states that the great thing about photography is that you can take a photo of almost anything out there and make it something unique. He has been a member of NVPS for five years and has enjoyed meeting some wonderful people and great photographers. He enjoys sharing his photos but also enjoys seeing the great talent of others. Kevin loves the creativity of photography and looks forward to many more years of creating and sharing images.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Huntley Meadows Park - You Never Know What You Will See with David Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Photos taken of the fairly rare wildlife in the ever-changing Huntley Meadows Park. The atmosphere in the park changes frequently from deftly still too noisy and boisterous. This is David’s favorite place to photograph. If it were possible\, he would go there every day. \nThe photos below were mostly shot in 2021. \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursued his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his  neighborhood to visiting many local and far away parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \nHe was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. In 2021\, David wrote “Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Guide Book.” In it\, he describes 25 locations the Meetup Group frequently visited over the past seven years. The book is available on Amazon.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: National Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:When the sun is low in the winter\, it’s a great time of year to visit the National Cathedral.  It’s a literal photographic gold mine.  On a sunny day the light creates a dynamic and colorful environment indoors that is unmatched.  The National Cathedral also features beautiful and unique Gothic revival architecture outdoors.  There are lots of details to discover here\, and I’m happy to see they have reopened recently after closing for COVID. \nAdvanced tickets cost $15 for adults ($10 for seniors and military).  We’ll be going rain\, snow\, or shine.  We’re hoping for the best possible weather. \nWhat:  \nIt’s been almost 11 years since the earthquake\, but repairs continue to the outside of the cathedral.  You will likely see scaffolding on the South side of the cathedral and around the top of the center tower.  The grounds surrounding the cathedral\, including the Bishop’s Garden\, are freely accessible to explore; however\, tickets are required if you want to go in. \nInside you will find the rose windows over the north\, south\, and west entrances.  The north side doesn’t get as much light this time of year\, but the other sides more than make up for that.  The south arcade will be the brightest.  The light shining through the stained-glass windows lasts well into the early afternoon and moves from the opposite wall to the floor and then to the adjacent wall.  The unique light shining through the stained-glass window near the statue of George Washington (southwest corner of the nave\, just to the right as you enter the nave) can’t be missed either. \nAs this is a working church\, please be respectful to others who may be there on ‘business’.  Shy your camera away from parishioners to respect their privacy.  Normally\, the cathedral offers a noontime service.  If there is a service and you are in the nave\, you may be asked to stop taking pictures.  This is normal.  Try exploring the downstairs\, towers\, or going outside for the next 30-45 minutes. \nSteven Glintz did his first portfolio on the National Cathedral.  He later self-published a much larger body of work\, but the portfolio can be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/PortfolioProject/2017-2018/Steveglintz/ \nAdditional images from our club’s last visit in 2020 can also be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/National-Cathedral-January-2020/ \nEquipment: \n\nA 24-70mm should easily capture most indoor shots\, however a 70-300mm can be useful to reach finer details higher up. You may also find use for a 12-24mm\, but I’ve only used mine a couple times here.\nTripods are allowed\, but caution is recommended. The church asks you not to place your tripod in doorways\, stairways\, or any other position that blocks the way.\nMasks are required indoors.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, February 12\, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. No rain date is scheduled. \nRemember\, advanced tickets are required if you want to go inside.  Get your Sightseeing Admission tickets online for the field trip date at this link: https://tix.cathedral.org/TheatreManager/1/online?performance=25071 \nYou can see other ticketed events at the cathedral here: https://tix.cathedral.org/TheatreManager/1/login?event=0 \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet at 10 a.m. outside the northwest corner of the cathedral near Wisconsin Ave. by the elevator to the underground parking. There is plenty of underground parking for $9; however\, you may find free parking along Wisconsin Ave. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n*Photos by Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Programs: Some Ways to Analyze and Improve Your Photos with Roy Sewall
DESCRIPTION:This program discusses “Some Ways to Analyze and Improve Your Photos” which will cover  \n\nUse of space\nVisual weight\nBalance\nFlow\nElimination of distractions\n\nVisual weight is a primary driver in all of these\, so Roy’s emphasis will be on visual weight. \n  \nWaterside Woolen Mill\, Woodbury\, PA\nRoy Sewall is a retired professional photographer based in Bethesda\, Maryland. Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents\, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. \nFrom 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations\, architecture and design\, people\, nature\, old places and things\, and abstracts. He then moved on to a project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy\, whimsy\, and spirits. Today Roy’s interests are quite broad. Roy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients\, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations. \nRoy considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print\, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows\, as well as in his own studio. \nRoy’s first photography coffee-table book\, Our Potomac\, from Great Falls through Washington\, D.C.\, was published in 2005. The book led to numerous lecture and slide show engagements with local organizations\, and established him as one of the leading photographers of the Potomac River and C&O Canal. His second book\, Great Falls and Mather Gorge\, took a magnifying glass to this extraordinary area; it was published in 2009. These are still the definitive photography books of the river and canal in the DC area. \nRoy offers both private and group instruction and critique to novice and intermediate photographers. In 2014 he became an instructor for the Capital Photography Center\, where he offers classes and local field trips. \nRoy has judged photographic competitions and has critiqued bodies of work at Maryland\, DC\, and Virginia camera clubs more than 70 times since 2006. He regularly does instructional programs at camera clubs and Nature Visions (Manassas\, Virginia)\, with the most popular one being “Taking Your Photography to the Next Level.” \nHe has made over 40 presentations to the general public about the Potomac River and C&O Canal using photographs from his two books. He has also made presentations of photographs of China from 1901 to 1939 by his missionary grandfather Robert Fitch\, to Chinese and U.S. audiences. \nIn 2018\, Roy was selected by the Maryland Photography Alliance to conduct their Judges Training Program\, a three- session program each Fall and Spring. \nRoy served as the President of the North Bethesda Camera Club from 2016 to 2018. He was the first Chair of the Board of Directors of the C&O Canal Trust\, and also served on the Board of Directors for the Potomac Riverkeeper Network. \nPlease see his website: www.roysewallphotography.com \n\n\nFound in Utrecht\, NetherlandsLiège-Guillemins Railway Station\, Beligium

SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – History and Beauty on the Amalfi Coast with Wayne & Judy Guenther
DESCRIPTION:The last European trip that Wayne and Judy Guenther took prior to Covid restrictions was in November\, 2019 when they travelled with Road Scholar. While this wasn’t a photography workshop\, there were many opportunities to photograph the richness\, beauty\, and history of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Amalfi Coast on the southwestern shores of Italy. They share their experiences and images from the quaint town of Sorrento to the excavated ruins of Pompeii and including the luscious colors of the local food and cuisine. \n\n\nPhoto by: Judy Guenther Photo by: Wayne Guenther \n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015. He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions.   \nWayne shot with Nikon equipment for many years until the aggregate weight on his back and shoulders became problematic.  He switched to the micro-four-thirds system in 2014 and uses Olympus E-M1 bodies and a combination of Olympus and Sigma lenses. \nJudy Guenther admits to being primarily a travel photographer. She loves shooting a variety of subjects while traveling\, depending on where in the world she happens to be. From landscapes in the Palouse and National Parks\, to water and ice in Greenland and Antarctica\, to wildlife in South Georgia Island and Montana\, to local portraits and street photography\, and finally to amazing architecture. She has been a member of NVPS since 2015\, is a member of the F11 Women’s Photography Collective\, the Art League in the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria\, and the Maryland Federation of Arts in Annapolis\, MD. She has received several awards including at the Nature Visions Expos (now Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions) People’s Choice Award in Photo Art and Best in Flower Photography in the Nature Category. \n\n\n\n\n Photo by: Judy Guenther Photo by: Wayne Guenther

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Beauty Close to Home: Images from the Pandemic with Rena Schild
DESCRIPTION:When the pandemic shut down sports and events\, Rena turned to wildlife and nature photography.  She will share the local beauty she has captured during the pandemic.    \nRena has been interested in photography since she received a manual film camera as a college graduation gift\, but was sidelined by the practice of law until she had time to take some photography courses in the 1990’s.  She then began experimenting with many types of photography\, including family portraits\, events\, red carpet\, sports\, fine art and most recently bird photography.  Rena is currently happiest capturing athletes and birds in motion but thoroughly enjoys all photography\, especially outdoors.  She joined NVPS in early 2020.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Welcome to Da ‘Hood with Debra Mastronardi
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Da ‘Hood – a collection of images from various Manhattan neighborhoods. \nStunning photos have always been Debra’s preferred form of art. She gets inspired by what is possible when looking through the lens. She started shooting with film and enjoyed capturing her life’s journey through the camera. Her camera never left her side for over two decades while raising her two children as she captured every life event; however she switched off manual and onto auto functions. There was no time to fiddle around with aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO. \nNow she is onto the next chapter of her life\, the “empty nester”. She renewed her passion for photography with help from a few friends and started creative shooting again. Her theme for this rebirth is “Life Off Of Auto”. It means more than moving the dial from Auto to Manual. It’s a transition from her children’s needs and schedules to a more spontaneous lifestyle; traveling with her husband while rediscovering her artistic creative side. \nDebra has been an NVPS member for just over 1 year. Some of her favorite styles of photography are cityscape\, landscape and street.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly\, VA is part of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum.  The museum is housed in a giant hanger providing ample indoor space to move about and explore. \nThis is a space for photographers who want to play and experiment.  You’ll find static displays\, but as a photographer\, you can add motion by dragging that shutter.  If geometry is your thing\, you’ll find lots of circles\, curves\, lines\, and other ways of assembling your composition.  The materials of the exhibits range from shiny to colorful challenging the photographer to find interesting abstract distortions and or unique color and geometric shapes.  There are a lot of creative outlets so take your time and study the subjects that interest you. \nWhat: \nThe Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum is located adjacent to Dulles International Airport.  The hanger exhibits full size aircraft including the Space Shuttle Discovery\, SR-71a Blackbird\, the B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay”\, and more.  Unfortunately\, there is a closed off area of the hanger under construction / renovation this year.  That means the general aviation and WW2 aviation exhibits will be impacted.  However\, the commercial aviation exhibit\, cold war era exhibit\, and space hanger are still open.  (I’m not certain if the x-wing is still in the restoration hanger or if it’s been moved to Washington DC yet.  Take a peek from the visitor overlook walkway upstairs.) \nAs per the Smithsonian website (https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center/visiting-tips) The use of tripods\, monopods\, and selfie sticks are prohibited.  Leave that weight at home and walk around in comfort.  Masks are also required while indoors. \nAlso be aware that there is no food currently sold onsite and food and drink is prohibited inside (bottled water is okay).  If you want lunch\, you’ll have to take a short car ride to eateries South on Rt.28 (exits Rt.50\, Willard Rd.\, or Westfields Blvd. all within a couple miles)\, but your original parking pass should get you back in without having to pay again. \nAdditional examples of our club’s work can be found online: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/FieldTrips-2018-2019/Udvar-Hazy-Museum-February/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/Udvar-Hazy-2017/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/Udvar-Hazy/ \n(Honestly\, I didn’t realize we as a club\, visit every other year.  It’s a fun place to go on a winter day.) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well. However\, some of the objects hanging from the roof may require 300mm if you want to fill the frame.  You can probably leave the macro lens at home.\nNo tripods allowed\nMasks required indoors\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, January 22\, 2021 from 10:00am – 1:00pmNo rain date because it doesn’t rain indoors! \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet inside the museum\, outside the museum shop on the left after you pass through the entrance and security. \nParking is $15 onsite\, however\, you can carpool from nearby parking lots to share the cost.  I used to work at 14000 Lincoln Park Dr. Herndon (now Raytheon) and that has a huge open parking lot with easy access to the road leading to the museum parking lot. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n***All photos are provided by Alan Goldstein

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Jean-Pierre Plé – Theme: “Old”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Old” within the past three (3) years \nOld : People\, places\, or objects that are showing their age. Helpful definitions: 1. Having lived for a long time; no longer young. The hands\, eyes\, faces of older people are classic examples. 2. Made or built long ago. Dilapidated barns\, antique cars or trucks are good examples. No dead\, or dying flowers or plants; in their relative life span they are old but it defeats the purpose of this theme. \nJean-Pierre Plé is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves\, to see our emotions\, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to.  He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes\, lines\, or contrast in color or tones.  \nHis photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature\, landscapes\, abstracts and architecture\, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography\, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner.  Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work\, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography.  While he employs DSLR\, mirrorless and iPhone cameras\, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow\, methodical\, and mechanical components of large format.   \nHe is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club.  His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington\, DC area\, including Washington Printmakers Gallery\, Waverly Street Gallery\, Photoworks Gallery\, Nature Visions\, Herndon ArtSpace\, the Joe Miller Gallery\, PhotoWalk in Crystal City\, Touchstone Gallery\, Lowe House Building\, and the Dupont Underground.  His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SUMMARY:Education & Training – “How to Get Your Work Out There” by Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:Georgette’s journey in photography began 15 years ago when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born. Not capturing the cute smiles that she wanted\, Georgette switched from a point’n shoot to a DSLR (Nikon D80) and took classes at Fairfax County Adult Ed with John Gonsalves. Eventually the relationship of aperture\, shutter speed\, and exposure fell into place. John instructed her class to tell a story; fill the frame! She hears his voice whenever she has a camera (or cell phone) in hand!! \nGeorgette captures moments that she wants to remember. Her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, and nature\, but her favorite subject is flowers–close-ups and macros. Currently\, she is photographing with a mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \nGeorgette personally believes that part of photography is sharing your work with others: \n\nat camera club meetings\nat competitions\nat exhibits\nin publications\non social media\non your own website\n\nIn this meeting\, she will explore How to Get Your Work Out There.
