SUMMARY:Field Trips: High Wheel Bike Race\, Frederick MD
DESCRIPTION:Take a trip back in time at the only high wheel race of its kind in the country!  Watch racers on bicycles that have up to a five-foot tall front wheel and a tiny rear wheel as they move through a 0.4 mile course in historic downtown Frederick Maryland at speeds up to 20 mph.  There will be both vintage and reproduction bikes and many racers wear vintage clothing.  There are two qualifying heats and a championship heat along with events between those races.  In addition to photographing the racers and spectators you can take advantage of the many photo opportunities Frederick MD offers by visiting its river walk and shooting the architecture of the historic downtown.  There are also many great restaurants and shops if you would like to make a day of it.  Where: Frederick\, MD(Start/Finish: Brewer’s Pub\, 124 N. Market Street\, Frederick\, MD)The National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race When:Saturday\, July 16\, 2022 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.(There is no rain date for this event) Cost:This is a free event.  On-street and garage parking in Frederick is $1/hour.  Equipment: \n\nLenses in the 24-70 range will work well\nThere will not likely be room to use a tripod\, but hand-holding should work well and will permit movement between shots of the racers and spectators. \n\n  \nNotes:Driving time is approximately one hour from Fairfax.  \nFrederick has several parking garages.  The two closest to this event are the Church Street garage at 17 E. Church Street and the Carroll Creek garage at 44 E. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Smithsonian Folklife Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival returns for 2022.  Every year\, the Smithsonian organizes a festival on The Mall inviting people from around the world to share their cultures at our nation’s Capitol.  This festival is a cornerstone event on The Mall.  It’s recognized as the largest annual cultural event in the US capital and ranks among other top events like the World Expo.  This is one festival you don’t want to miss.  Best of all\, it’s FREE. \nEach year\, the Smithsonian Folklife festival has two themes and several special evening concerts.  This year’s themes are the United Arab Emirates (https://festival.si.edu/2022/uae) and Earth Optimism (https://festival.si.edu/2022/earth-optimism).  Based on years past\, you can expect to witness craftsman\, music\, dance\, story-telling\, and other amazing demonstrations that will blow your socks off.  At the time of this writing the festival calendar has not been posted. \nThe festival runs daily 11am to 6pm from June 22-27 and June 30 until July 4\, 2022.  \nIn the past\, the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building hosted the marketplace for the festival\, however\, there is no word that will be happening this year. \nEquipment: \n\nTripods on The Mall are allowed\, but with the crowd and your own mobility in mind\, you probably want to leave the tripod at home.\nLenses in the range 24-70 will capture much of the action but don’t forget to bring a longer lens\, 70-200\, for staged events and presentations.\nComfortable walking shoes for walking.\nProtection from the sun such as sunscreen and a hat.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, June 25\, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p. mRain date on Sunday\, June 26\, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet outside the Smithsonian Metro Stop on The Mall (not the exit on the corner of 12th St. SW and Independence Ave SW).  This location is also traditionally the location for the festival’s information booth so it may be a little busy.  We’ll try to find a spot within 50 feet that is away from the crowd so we’re easy to spot. \nStreet parking will be difficult East of the Washington Monument.  Garage parking will probably run you $20-$35.  You’ll find them within one block North of Constitution Ave. and one block South of Independence Ave.  The parking lot run by the National Park Service at the Tidal Basin may offer a few spots\, but those spots are time limited (3 hours max). \nMetro will be your best bet.  The convenience and accessibility of the metro to this event cannot be overstated.  Bring a mask and some personal sanitizer.  The Smithsonian stop is served by the Blue\, Orange\, and Silver lines. \nCOVID precautions: \nAlthough this event is outdoors\, you may find yourself among larger crowds.  With variants of the virus on the rise\, you may want to carry a face covering just in case.  If you decide to take public transit\, you’ll probably want to mask up as well. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz taken from 2016-2018  (https://festival.si.edu/past-programs)

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our very last meeting of the 2021 – 2022 season\, NVPS End-of-Year Awards Night! We will have the full program of awards presented via Zoom this evening. In addition to the Zoom presentation\, we will be having a picnic at Burke Lake Park on Sunday June 12th. We hope that you can join us for the picnic\, but please be on the lookout for an eBlast with the full picnic details and how to RSVP for it. \nWe are pleased to have Nikhal Bahl as the judge for the end of year competition. He has the most difficult task of selecting the top images from all of the images that were awarded a 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, or Honorable Mention throughout the year within each competion class and category. That is going to be quite the challenge after seeing so many impressive winning images this club year. \nBIO \nNikhil Bahl is a full time professional photographer\, author\, educator\, workshop instructor and environmentalist residing in the Washington D.C. area.  Drawing continuous inspiration from nature\, Nikhil adopts novel approaches and seeks meaningful interpretations:  to create photographs that transcend the commonplace\, reflect deeper insights\, and convey an enchantment of the subject’s beauty. \nAn offshoot of Nikhil’s fine art photography and love of nature is his documentation of wildlife behaviors and habitats.  As a volunteer with the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, his goal is to portray environmental stories with an artistic appeal\, so his photographs educate and motivate about the imperative of conservation. \nEach year Nikhil leads numerous photography tours and instructional workshops in the United States and abroad. His teaching encourages participants to advance beyond ordinary photos and develop their own style and vision. Nikhil is a popular speaker at photography clubs\, expos and industry events. DESCRIPTION:Sarah loves to travel and capture her experiences through photography.  While working remotely during the pandemic\, she hiked many National and State Park trails throughout the United States including Yellowstone\, Grand Tetons\, Rocky Mountain\, Zion\, Bryce Canyon\, Arches\, Joshua Tree\, Mt. Rainier\, Columbia River Gorge\, Haleakalā\, Grand Canyon\, Saguaro\, Sedona\, Acadia\, and Shenandoah.  Walking with nature has given Sarah an appreciation of the depth\, breadth\, and the beauty of the great outdoors.  This gallery highlights photos from Sarah’s travels over the past two years\, shot entirely on her iPhone.  She frequently pulled her iPhone out of her hiking backpack to capture shots of the stunning landscapes and interesting silhouettes along the way.Sarah is a beginner photographer and new member of NVPS\, joining in the Fall of 2021.  She was inspired by her father and fellow club member\, John Olsen\, to further develop her photography skills.  Sarah has attended several NVPS field trips with her Dad over the years.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): A View from the Street with Robin Weisz
DESCRIPTION:Robin will present a galley of architecture\, shadows\, reflections\, and street photography. \nRobin was introduced to photography as part of the curriculum in her work towards her BFA in graphic design. Working her way through college as an assistant in the photo lab she spent many hours helping others with their processing of film and black and white prints. From the very beginning Robin found herself drawn to images of architecture\, abstraction and reflections. That continues to be the main focus of her work. Robin is a full-time graphic designer with her own studio\, Robin Weisz Design (robinweiszdesign.com). The studio’s focus is on publication design for non-profits and higher education. Robin’s architectural photography has been featured in many publications designed for UCLA. \nOriginally from New York\, Robin has been a full-time resident of Los Angeles for the past 40 years. Fellow NVPS member\, and high school classmate\, Rena Schild suggested that since the NVPS meetings were now virtual she might be interested in joining. She has enjoyed the virtual meetings and participating in the competitions and feels she has learned a great deal from her membership and the critiques.

SUMMARY:Portfolio Project – Final Portfolio Project Review\, Group 2 with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:Portfolio Project: The second final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Brian Zwit as our reviewer for the second group of this years participants. \nBrian Zwit\, formerly just a photographer and educator in northern Virginia\, added filmmaker to his resume during the pandemic years. \nWhile still enthralled with still photography\, he is using video to expand his storytelling options and range of subjects. When shooting stills\, his favorite subject is the elegance and majesty of nature\, particularly landscapes\, and when filmmaking\, the human condition\, telling the unique and unusual stories of the everyday person. While having his favorite genres\, he dabbles with photographing and filming protests\, dogs\, travel adventures\, and street life. \nBrian has been teaching photography for more than ten years for workshop companies and non-profits\, including the Ward Museum\, Chincoteague Bay Field Station\, and camera clubs in the mid-Atlantic. Brain is an exceptional Lightroom instructor\, and he has had more than 1\,000 students attend his Lightroom training. Brian also speaks to camera clubs\, schools\, and other organizations on creativity and photographic techniques. He is well known for his ability to distill complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple\, easy to understand ways \nBrian’s favorite assistant is Dingo\, a Parson Russell Terrier\, who really is not very helpful but is always ready for a walk in the woods. She also reminds him not to get too obsessed with work\, photography\, and filmmaking and just enjoy paying attention to her. \nBrian’s skills have extended to his excellent Portfolio reviews for several years\, providing the participants and the entire club with valuable insight on improving our communication and presentation skills.

DESCRIPTION:Spring has sprung and it’s time to capture some flowers at one of the nicest gardens in the country: Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond\, VA.  The garden is comprised of 82 acres and contains more than a dozen themed garden areas\, a conservatory and a large lake.  In May you can expect to see roses (with 2\,000 blooms in the rose garden)\, peonies and azaleas in bloom\, among many other flowers.  The garden also has a café and gift shop. SUMMARY:Member’s Forum – The Art of Building Photography with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:Construction photography is a subject that not many photographers get at chance to explore.  For me\, however\, it came as an integral part of my career in architecture and construction project management. My interest in photography paralleled my architectural education during which I documented most of my college projects. As my career developed\, so did my interest and fascination with photographing not only the finished projects\, but the process of creating them as well.  \nI started to record the process in a documentary form\, but soon saw the potential to go beyond to capture the incredible images of light\, color\, form\, texture\, and composition that the construction process can produce. The images can be of materials\, machinery\, and equipment; and of course\, the trades people themselves. \nCapturing images on a construction site is a challenge on two levels – technical and interpersonal. The technical challenge is being at the right place\, at the right time\, with the right light. Understanding the construction sequence is of course very helpful. The pace can be fast and often sporadic\, so there’s no time for lighting setups\, umbrellas\, or other assisted illumination.  You must use what is there. Equipment needs to be simple and flexible. In the early film years\, this was a challenge without quality zoom lenses. So\, I carried two cameras with different lenses – one normal and one telephoto. As digital photography developed\, I was able to simplify this to one camera and two lenses. \nDeveloping a level of familiarity and trust with the construction team is as important as the technical aspects. The craftsmen are at first suspicious of a photographer in their midst– they are concerned that the pictures will be used to show them doing something wrong. So\, I start by being as inconspicuous as possible until my presence is accepted.  It helps to give trades people a print of their picture – they love to show their families how they look at work. \nOf course\, I’ve shared these images with the architects and builders I’ve worked with. Some of these images were published in the October 2011 edition of Lenswork. I hope you will enjoy them too.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: People\, Places and Things with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:People\, Places and Things (but not in that order!) \nThis presentation is broken into three parts:  People (street photography)\, Things (that caught my eye) and Places (landscapes and places) from our travels over the last few years. \nGreg Smith Bio: \nEnthusiast to Opportunist to Hobbyist to “Something More”? \nGreg became familiar with photography from an early age.  His father\, serving in Ireland and Cyprus\, took many pictures throughout their many travels\, always considering angles and framing the subjects when he could\, and describing what and why as he did so.  Many a slide show was enjoyed!  \nGreg got his first SLR (Minolta) prior to deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures.  However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from 3 blocks away to get it all in!  He secured his lens at the Navy Exchange in Naples\, and so the enthusiast was hooked. \nWhen Greg’s wife upgraded her camera\, he took over her Nikon 5600 and began taking pictures again.  He was able to have a cup of coffee with a retired Marine who introduced him to NVPS\, showing him several amazing award-winning photographs.  K-12 invited Greg to visit a club meeting\, which he did\, along with his wife\, and shortly after they joined. \nSince joining NVPS he has enjoyed the inspiration of seeing amazing pictures\, the creativity of other members and the focused opportunities afforded by the themed competitions.   Taking more pictures led to upgrading to a Nikon D750\, and with the encouragement of his wife\, adopted shooting primarily in manual mode.  \nNow Greg enjoys shooting whatever he happens upon: birds and landscapes primarily\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity.  He is becoming more purposeful in his photography\, moving from just shooting snapshots to thinking about compositions and seeking out better environments for capturing images.  He and his wife Gitta are anticipating an RV trip to Denver\, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks\, with many stops along the way\, and hopefully will have many opportunities to expand his skills.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Getting to Know You with Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan
DESCRIPTION:This evening will be an NVPS first: a Group Member’s Gallery featuring three of our newer and new to gallery presentation members. Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan present three mini Member’s Galleries. \nSusan Blalock \nSusan got her love of photography from her grandfather and helped him develop photos for family holiday cards in his home darkroom which was located a closet under the stairs.  She purchased a digital camera several years ago and the pandemic gave her the opportunity to spend more time taking photos.  Finding NVPS was quite the happy accident for Susan when she started to look for a local camera club to join.  NVPS’ weekly meetings\, variety of speakers\, field trips\, and the mentor program were all interesting and last winter she decided to join the Club.  Since the Fall Susan has been working with mentor Will Friedman and so far their focus has been working on black and white images.  Willa’s guidance has helped Susan to improve how she sees images and improved the tonal range of her images.  Susan is still very much a “newbie” and she enjoys nature photography\, long exposure\, and macro\, but is not opposed to giving any genre a try. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nSuzy McIntire \nSuzy has had two wonderful mentors since she joined NVPS in 2019: Willa Friedman and Stan Bysshe. She can’t thank them enough for help to learn her Fuji\, how to shoot in RAW and use HDR and LightRoom\, how to choose a picture for competition\, and the importance of “knowing her bird.” There was excellent discussion of issues around street photography\, and some pictures even got competition awards\, although not when she didn’t listen to Willa. \n\n\n\n\n\nTerri Lannigan \nTerri was introduced to photography by her father\, an avid photographer of nature\, trains and automobiles.  They spent many hours hiking and capturing photos\, mostly landscape\, with her trusty Pentax K1000.  The cost of film was prohibitive during college and early professional years\, and photography fell by the wayside.  With the advent of digital photography\, and with young children\, Terri again picked up the camera for family events and vacations.  As the kids got older\, and time was more available to return to hiking and to devote to the craft of photography\, Terri was lucky to be encouraged by Georgette Grossman to join NVPS.  She hasn’t looked back!  Originally\, thinking that she would focus on mammals and landscape\, she found that vision difficult to realize for short weekend jaunts and ended up developing a love of birds\, insects and tree frogs.  NVPS has been a huge contributor to her growth as a photographer and she is looking forward to continuing to learn and grow through the many resources available here.

DESCRIPTION:Portfolio Project: The first final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Cynthia Keith as our reviewer for the first group of this years participants. \nCynthia L. Keith is a native Washingtonian. Her love of photography started in a journalism class at Walt Whitman High School and over the years has led her to scenic locations from Alaska to Maine in search of landscape images. Her specialty is garden landscape photography\, a marriage of her vision for the grand landscape and intimate flower portraits. \nCynthia has been a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club since 1992 where she has exhibited\, participated in numerous presentations\, and served on multiple committees. She is a frequent judge at camera clubs in the greater Washington area. \nOutside of photography\, she has a BA in Music and an MBA from the University of Maryland and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Cynthia has worked for several financial firms in the Washington\, DC area during her career as an investment manager. She is past president of the Washington Association of Money Managers and the CFA Institute in Washington.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:If you missed our Fall 2020 trip to visit the Monuments at Night\, you’re in luck.  Our April field trip will return to the monuments at (or just after) peak cherry blossom season.  Lots of photographers visit this time of year\, but what many don’t know is that the monuments are best viewed after sunset.  This is a wonderful trip for all levels of photographers\, especially beginners. \nWhat: \nThe cherry blossoms will be well underway and Spring will be in the air.  We’ll visit the World War II Memorial\, Vietnam War Memorials\, Korean War Memorial\, Lincoln Memorial and other nearby sites.  Feel free to see and do as much as you want.  There really is too much to see in one night. \nPlease note\, the National Cherry Blossom Festival will be in full swing.  In fact\, there is a parade on the morning of April 9 (10am) along Constitution Ave.  There is also a street festival on Pennsylvania Ave between 3rd and 7th St. until 6pm.  Our activities will not be impacted\, but this could impede your chances at getting the perfect parking spot. \nTripods inside the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial are prohibited.  Tripods are allowed in most outdoor areas\, however\, if a park ranger asks you to move or pick up your tripod\, it will be because you’re set up in a high traffic area. \nSunset is at 7:40 p.m. (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nSturdy tripod\nLeave your super telephotos and fast glass at home.\nRemote shutter or cable release will be useful to prevent camera shake.\nGraduated filters are optional for sunset shots.\nFlash and or flashlight is optional.\nYour best walking shoes.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 9\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p. mRain date on Sunday\, April 10\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet at the World War II Memorial for what we hope will be a wonderful sunset behind the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool.  When that’s done\, we’ll travel West along the Reflecting Pool to visit the Vietnam War Memorials\, Lincoln Memorial\, and Korean War Memorial.  We’ll also go behind the Lincoln Memorial to view the newly rehabilitated Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Rosslyn skyline. \nIf there is enough interest\, Steve will be willing to lead another another group from our meeting spot at the WW2 Memorial to the Tidal Basin visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial\, FDR Memorial\, and finish at the Jefferson Memorial. \nMetered parking is in effect from 7am-8pm on Ohio Dr. SW.  The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total).  Please note that the cherry blossom festival will still be going on so the parking lot at the Tidal Basin Paddle Boats will probably be filled with equipment and closed to the public.  The parking lots A\, B\, and C along Ohio Dr just past the 14 St. overpass should be an option.  The metro blue and orange lines will also service Smithsonian and Foggy Bottom which are the nearest stops to our field trip. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy  Rena Schild and Steven Glintz.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS galleries. \nField Trip: DC Monuments\, Sep 2020Field-Trip: DC at Night\, Dec 2014

SUMMARY:Programs:  Tips on creating that Amazing UHD Time-lapse with Mark Kettenhofen
DESCRIPTION:For his presentation\, Mark will talk about his time as a senior staff photographer with Nikon for more than 20-years\, how he was tasked with creating marking imagery for Nikon.  Mark’s last two award winning project were the showcase marketing adventures that were shown world-wide. These projects were to create UHD (4k) time Lapse for both the Nikon D850 and Z7 camera releases. Mark will break down how each project was shot\, from lens choice\, camera settings\, supporting gear\, as-well-as location choices and the apps he used to predict lighting and night skies. \nMark has been behind a camera for more than 40-years. He began his photography career in the US Navy documenting the Navy’s global operations as a Syracuse University trained photojournalist. Mark spent 20-years as a Navy Photojournalist traveling the world documenting historical military operations.  His efforts and talent were recognized through numerous awards\, including being awarded the prestigious Military Photographer of the Year.  After retiring from the Navy\, Mark spent 21-years working for Nikon Professional Services\, as a senior staff photographer. With Nikon he continued his passion for adventure\, travel and photography. Mark’s camera has taken him on expeditions to Everest Base Camp\, the Galapagos Islands\, the rugged coast of south & central America\, and deep into the jungles of the Amazon River basin.   With camera in hand\, Mark has covered 4 summer and 3 winter Olympics\, including being selected as an Olympic Venue Photo Manager for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In addition\, Mark’s focus has taken him to the sidelines of 5 World Cups\, 4 Super Bowls\, and numerous collegiate playoffs.  \nHis personal belief of –Giving back as freely as you were given– has allowed Mark to be a workshop leader for Defense Information School\, Nikon School\, Santa Fe Workshops\, Arizona Highways Magazine\, US DOD Military Workshops\, Lindblad Expeditions and Photography at the Summit Workshops.  For 23-years he has volunteered as the Lead Team Leader for the Eddie Adams Workshop\, an intense four-day gathering of top photography professionals\, along with 100-carelfully selected students. Mark is the co-author of America from 500-feet II\, a photographic exploration of the United States from the air with legendary landscape photographer\, Bill Fortney.  Mark volunteers his time with Team Rubicon\, a vet-based disaster response team. \nMark’s passion for photography is only eclipsed by his love of adventure and the conservation of our planet.

DESCRIPTION:Description of Presentation: \nSkylum has released two AI photo editing tools (AI and Neo) which David Crooks will demonstrate using your photos in a live photo editing session.  Instructions for submitting photos to David will be available in the “Notices” section of all NVPS eBlasts sent from March 15 through March 25\, under the heading “Call for Photos.”  The deadline for submissions is Saturday\, March 26.  You may coordinate with David as necessary via the “Webmaster” email address found in Board Contacts. \nBio: \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursues his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and far away\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia to be closer to work. He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \nDavid is also the organizer of the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group which has over 2\,000 members and leads about two field trips a month. The Group also does a Photo A Day for the year and a month project. The goal is to take photos every day and post the best one to the Meetup site. This is a proven way to improve your photography. Mike will also provide details on the two walking tours taken along the northwest coast. \n\n\n\nBIO \n\n\n\nMike’s introduction to digital photography happened in 2002 when he purchased a digital point-and-shoot camera. He became hooked in 2006 after purchasing a basic DSLR. \n\n\n\nMike joined NVPS in 2009 after learning about the club from fellow member\, Willa Friedman. DESCRIPTION:For this Members Gallery\, Kirk will be presenting photographs that were taken during a November 2021 cruise to the Greek Islands. \nKirk Johnson is a seasoned photographer who has been taking digital photos since 2012.  A Nikon shooter\, Kirk is interested in a variety of subjects that include wildlife (in November 2019 he did a photo shoot in South Africa and Zimbabwe)\, architecture\, travel\, street and urban\, portrait\, black-and-white\, floral and abstract.  Kirk uses an array of post-processing tools to create his final product including Photoshop Creative Cloud Topaz Studio\, Photomatix\, and PortraitPro Studio. \nKirk has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including: six photo creations on CBS Sunday Morning (2021 & 2022)\,  2019 Annual Photography Award (APA) – Honorable Mention for Wildlife category\, 2017 International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA) – Nominee Award for Abstract photography; the 2014 Great American Country  (GAC) – Hunt for Americana Photo Contest – United States Southern Region Finalist; and numerous NVPS monthly and end-of-year competition awards.  Additionally\, three of his photographs were juried into the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions competition and a People’s Choice finalist.  \nHis photographs have appeared in Outdoor Photography.com\, Bliss Magazine\, twice in Shutterbug.com “Photo of the Day\,” and inside the Willing Warriors Retreat at Bull Run (Reflecting Pond and Lincoln Memorial)\, and in the 2020 Burke and Herbert Calendar – for the month of August (Jefferson Memorial).  \nKirk\, a retired Naval officer and Federal employee lives in Alexandria\, Virginia with his wife\, Leslie.  Kirk has volunteered his time in NVPS; as a Members Forum Coordinator\, Members Gallery Coordinator\, and most recently Vice President for Programs. \nYou can see some of Kirk’s photo creations on his website www.kirkjohnsonphotography.squarespace.com.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Close to Home with Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:For the past two years\, because of the pandemic\, Willa has been photographing very close to home. This is an overview of the parks in the vicinity and almost all the pictures were taken in the last two years. The only exception that she can think of is the river otter at Huntley Meadows\, but they are unusual and Willa wanted to show what might be seen in these places. \nWilla’s first job after college was as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, She had a choice of several summer projects—filing\, cleaning animal cages or photographing wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools. She claimed to be able to do photography and came home with a camera. Bob taught her everything she needed to know over the following weekend and her work was published. Bob still claims to have taught her everything she knows.\n\nWilla has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, and Santa Fe Workshop. She has also had extensive courses in Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. She has been a member of NVPS since 2004 and has learned  a great deal from the members and speakers. She is currently coordinator for the solo shows at Beanetics\, or will be when they re-open. \nHer work is on display at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and she has an image in the permanent collection of the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts and has had images published in the Northern Virginia Review  and District Lines and has had solo shows at 1st Stage and Beanetics Coffee Rosters in Annandale and has been  a guest artist at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda. \n

SUMMARY:Competition with Judge Max Waugh – Theme: “Abstracts”
DESCRIPTION:Competition Theme: “Abstract” within the past three (3) years \nAbstracts: An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer\, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects\, or it may involve the use of color\, light\, shadow\, texture\, shape and/or form to convey a feeling\, sensation or impression. Close ups of common objects\, reflections on moving water are some examples. Generally\, the subject is not readily identifiable. “Basic” post processing is allowed. Software add-ins and tools such as liquify\, textures\, etc. are not allowed. Stacking multiple images\, zooming\, and panning done by the photographer are permitted. This theme is about what the photographer can accomplish in camera not about processing with software tools. \n \nMax has been photographing wildlife\, travel\, and sports professionally for the past two decades. He has received multiple honors in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition (including a win in the Black and White category in 2019)\, and commendations in the Nature’s Best/Windland Smith Rice Awards. SUMMARY:Portfolio Project – Interim Portfolio Project Review\, Group 2
DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Brenda Wilson and Willa Siegel\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will look at the Artist Statements and images to see how they fit and represent the premise as laid out in the Artist Statement.  Self analysis is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to view their work with a critical eye.  Final reviews will be April 12 for the first group and May 17 for the second group.

SUMMARY:Programs: Life in the Chesapeake Bay - Tangier Island\, a Visual Journey with Irene Sacilotto
DESCRIPTION:Irene’s presentation will explore the Tangier Islands\, Virginia located just south of the Maryland line\, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.  It is actually a series of small islands connected by narrow bridges spanning marshes and tidal creeks. From the mainland\, it can only be reached by boat or small plane.  On its narrow roads\, golf carts and bicycles replace cars as the primary mode of transportation.  It is a charming community of shop owners and waterman\, with many inhabitants making their living on the water as did their ancestors\, oystering and crabbing. Recently\, Tangier Island has been the focus of news stories as a possible casualty of climate change and sea level rise as each year flooding on the island becomes more frequent and erosion increases. This presentation is a visual journey\, compiled from photos that I have taken over the years.  It explores life on Tangier and paints a picture of the island\, waterman community\, and the wildlife that inhabits its marshes\, lagoons\, and tidal guts.  Includes tips on photographing the waterman community and wildlife.  \nBIO \nFor more than 35 years\, Irene has shared her photographic experiences and love of nature with thousands of individuals through more than 300 photo classes\, workshops\, lectures\, and tours in both the U.S. and abroad including Kenya\, Iceland\, Newfoundland\, the Falkland Islands\, the Brazilian Pantanal\, South Dakota Badlands\, Bosque del Apache\, Chincoteague NWR\, Tangier Island\, etc.  Program sponsors have included zoos\, nature centers\, camera clubs\, and conservation organizations such as National Wildlife Federation and the Assateague Island Alliance. \nFor many years\, she has taught photography classes at Johns Hopkins University and other educational institutions and have written “How To” articles on nature photography for national publications such as Outdoor Photographer and Birding. \nHer images have appeared in magazines\, calendars\, and books published by National Wildlife Federation\, Natural History Society\, Audubon\, and Sierra Club. Credits include the book\, “Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge\, an Ecological Treasure.”

DESCRIPTION:Photo by Nikhil BahlPhoto by Jim McDermott\n\n\nNew Mexico calls itself the “land of enchantment\,” a name that rings true after visiting its Bosque del Apache and White Sands National Park. Bosque\, famous for bird photography\, and White Sands\, with miles of snow-white gypsum sand dunes\, provided abundant photographic opportunities for seven NVPS members\, led by Nikhil Bahl (http://www.nikhilbahl.com)\, who is well known by the club as a judge and presenter. \nThis Members’ Forum will differ from most others by presenting the photographs of several photographers. While we traveled together during our week in New Mexico\, our images often differ\, reflecting differences in how we saw and captured the scenes of countless birds in flight or wind-blown patterns in the white sands. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: A Family Vacation in South Africa with Kevin Linde
DESCRIPTION:Twenty nine years after leaving South Africa\, Kevin and his family were able to enjoy visiting the country that he grew up in. Southern Africa offers so many photographic opportunities that range from beautiful landscapes to some of the most incredible wildlife on earth. \nKevin was born and raised in Johannesburg\, South Africa and moved to Canada in 1992 where he met his wife\, Debby. In 1998 they moved to Northern Virginia with their 2-year-old son\, Ryan. Their second son\, Jared\, was born in 1999 when they moved into their current home in Fairfax City. Kevin’s eldest son is now working and living in Austin\, TX and his youngest is a senior at the University of Alabama. Kevin currently works as a physical therapist in a private practice clinic\, which he founded in 2003. \nKevin became interested in photography about 16 years ago when he bought his first Canon DSLR. Prior to that he had a Pentax SLR\, which he owned for about 5 years prior to switching to digital. He learned the basics with this camera but was never that interested in photography. The change to digital provided instant feedback\, which allowed him to learn beyond the basics a lot faster. Kevin also enjoys post processing and continues to improve his skills with practice and online learning. He currently uses Canon equipment that he has accumulated over the years. His favorite subject to shoot is motor racing\, which is influenced by his interest in the sport. Not far behind is nature and animals which he was fortunate enough to enjoy while living in South Africa. He states that the great thing about photography is that you can take a photo of almost anything out there and make it something unique. He has been a member of NVPS for five years and has enjoyed meeting some wonderful people and great photographers. He enjoys sharing his photos but also enjoys seeing the great talent of others. Kevin loves the creativity of photography and looks forward to many more years of creating and sharing images.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Huntley Meadows Park - You Never Know What You Will See with David Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Photos taken of the fairly rare wildlife in the ever-changing Huntley Meadows Park. The atmosphere in the park changes frequently from deftly still too noisy and boisterous. This is David’s favorite place to photograph. If it were possible\, he would go there every day. \nThe photos below were mostly shot in 2021. \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursued his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his  neighborhood to visiting many local and far away parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \nHe was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. In 2021\, David wrote “Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Guide Book.” In it\, he describes 25 locations the Meetup Group frequently visited over the past seven years. The book is available on Amazon.
