DESCRIPTION:Alain Lazaro Gutierrez Almeida\n\n\n\nThe first final review of the Portfolio Project will be held with Alain Lazaro Gutierrez Almeida. Alain has served as a judge for NVPS competitions\, and now as a reviewer for NVPS Portfolio Projects. \n\n\n\nAlain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeda is a professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience.  He was born and raised in Havana\, Cuba. \n\n\n\nWith a background in photojournalism\, he has developed an extensive portfolio that includes documentary-style photography\, portraiture\, cultural travel photography\, street photography\, action shots\, landscapes\, and night photography. \n\n\n\nAlain is an energetic person with an engaging personality who enjoys collaborating with others in a creative environment. Since he moved to America\, Alain has created his own company “Thru Alain’s Eyes” that designs\, coordinates\, and guides individualized tours that meet the legal requirements for Americans visiting Cuba and allow his clients to support and engage with the Cuban people\, experiencing Cuba like a Cuban. SUMMARY:Field Trip - Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Meadowlark Botanical Gardens offers a wide variety of photographic possibilities.  Participants will have the opportunity to capture landscapes and colorful images of flowers blooming in one of a dozen garden beds in this ever expanding park operated by the Northern Virginia Park Authority.  There’s even something for bird photographers as this park attracts small songbirds with their bird feeders. \n\n\n\nThe park has nearly five miles of winding trails.  The visitor’s center and conservatory overlook the valley gardens where you will find the Lake Caroline Gazebo surrounded by cherry trees.  Azaleas should be blooming so a visit to the Azalea Woods Gazebo might be productive.  The Korean Bell Garden is another popular destination so there is plenty of room to spread out. \n\n\n\nFor your convenience\, here is a map of the gardens to help you plan ahead. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n* You will find images to compose with every lens so bring your favorite.   Consider bringing a macro lens to capture something uniquely colorful and up close or a longer lens if you want to capture the birds that frequent the garden. \n\n\n\n* Don’t forget your circular polarizer to cut the glare some of the more waxy plants. \n\n\n\n* Tripods and monopods are permitted provided they stay out of the garden beds. \n\n\n\n* Bring comfortable walking shoes for paved and mulch walking paths.  There are benches placed throughout the park and lots to see so don’t feel disappointed if you don’t make it all the way around. \n\n\n\nMeadowlark Botanical Gardens has a few rules and guidelines for photography.  Please respect their wishes so everyone can enjoy the gardens. \n\n\n\nMeadowlark has a small entrance fee: \n\n\n\nFree for ages 5 and under \n\n\n\n$4 for ages 6-17 and 55+ \n\n\n\n$8 for ages adults 18-54 \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, April 7\, 2024 from 10:00am – 1:00pmSaturday\, April 6\, 2024 from 10:00am – 1:00pm (Saturday is our alternate rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet in front of the Visitor’s Center for our usual greeting and socializing.  At that time\, we’ll also decide if we want to reconvene for lunch afterwards.  \n\n\n\nRestrooms are located near the cashier’s window at the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections:9750 Meadowlark Gardens CourtVienna\, VA 22182 \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

DESCRIPTION:Program Description \n\n\n\nMike Whalen\n\n\n\nMike enjoys a wide variety of photography subjects. In this video presentation he will show some of his favorite nature photos\, past and present. These still images will be shown in four groups: \n\n\n\n\nFlowers\, Trees\, Leaves and Bugs\n\n\n\nBirds\, Mammals\, Amphibians and Fish\n\n\n\nWater and Landscapes\n\n\n\nClose-Ups and Abstracts\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSome examples are shown below. The presentation will be a short video slide-show (approx. 10 minutes) with background music. The video will also be available to members via the website (within a few days after the date presented). \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. His first camera was an entry level Canon DSLR. \n\n\n\nHe joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. \n\n\n\nHe also volunteers weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter\, and occasionally\, as an event photographer for charitable organizations such as the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \n\n\n\nJoining NVPS was a significant learning opportunity due to the many club activities and inspiration from talented members. \n\n\n\nHis photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel\, and abstract photography. DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS since 2010-2011. He has served on multiple Board positions and is a past President. For the last ten years he has helped with photo workshops in Washington State\, New Mexico\, Alaska and Montana. For the past few years he has been working for the Smithsonian North American Songbird Project. \n\n\n\nSAFE\, Saving Animals from Extinction and the North American Songbird Project is an undertaking of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) of which the National Zoo is a partner. They are always looking for images and have several assigned bird photographers across the country. Basically Stan helps with images of Atlantic Coast songbirds. \n\n\n\nThe Members Gallery prints are part of the collection used for the SAFE project and were all taken over the past three years\, in his backyard.

DESCRIPTION:Covering equipment\, exposure\, autofocus\, craft and flash\, Bill will share what’s he learned and what you might need to know.  Whether you are getting started or getting juried with your bird images\, this update of Bill’s 2020 presentation will offer useful tips and information.  There will be a few nice pictures\, too. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBIO  \n\n\n\nA photographer of student life and sports for his college yearbook in the seventies\, but thereafter without a darkroom or free film\, Bill Corbett resumed his photography education in 2006\, thanks to the gift of a D70 from his wife\, Judy.  Since then he’s become an avid nature and travel photographer.   \n\n\n\nTaking part in activities at the McLean Photo Club\, NVPS\, MAPV/Nature Visions and elsewhere have helped Bill to keep learning. He was also very lucky to find a friend and mentor in the late Bill Prosser\, who is sorely missed. \n\n\n\nBill served for two decades as a U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator.  He is a longtime volunteer for Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions.  After twenty-odd years raising their three kids in Fairfax County\, Bill and Judy moved to Aldie in Loudoun County in 2017\, where nowadays Bill does a lot of his bird photography in their back yard.

DESCRIPTION:Deborah Loeb Bohren\n\n\n\nCompetition Theme:  “Making the World Go ‘Round – Gears\, Sprockets\, and Wheels” within the past three (3) years \n\n\n\nThe image should include gears\, sprockets\, or wheels. Gears\, sprockets\, and wheels have two things in common – they are round and move in a circular motion.  Some we see daily – such as bikes and auto wheels\, while others are usually hidden from view\, such as gears in many watches and clocks.  They come in all sizes\, from minuscule to gigantic.  Some are practical and utilitarian\, and some are colorful and fun. They could be in motion or at rest. They could be functional or no longer in service. Compositions can be created or found\, real or abstract.  Definitions:  A gear is a rotating circular machine part having cut teeth which mesh with another toothed part to transmit torque and speed.  A sprocket\, sprocket-wheel or chainwheel is a profiled wheel with teeth that mesh with a chain\, track\, or other perforated or indented material.  A wheel is a circular frame or disk arranged to revolve on an axis\, as part of a vehicle or machinery. \n\n\n\nFor Reference:  NVPS Competition Themes – Future\, Current and Past – NVPS \n\n\n\nThe judge is Deborah Loeb Bohren. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nThe offspring of two photographers\, Deborah is convinced an inescapable passion for photography was imprinted on her DNA. Raised on film and in a darkroom\, she believes the essence of photography is the art and science of painting with light. Deborah uses her camera as an artist would use a paintbrush and thinks about her work as visual alchemy―a transformation not of matter into gold but of light\, color\, and line into art. Multiple exposure and intentional camera movement are essential tools of her alchemy allowing her to challenge reality rather than simply recording what lies in front of her lens. Patience\, experimentation\, and the benevolence of the photography gods are also integral to her work. \n\n\n\nDeborah’s work is part of individual and corporate collections across the country and her “Homage to the Cubists in Paris” was awarded 1st Place in the 14th Annual International Color Awards (2021). She has also had the privilege of participating in a multitude of group exhibitions in the US\, including Sequences\, Iterations and Permutations at the Hyde Park Arts Center (Chicago\, IL\, 2022); Any Shape or Form and Enigma at the Upstream Gallery (Hastings-on-Hudson\, NY\, 2022\, 2023); iMotif at Sohn Fine Arts (Lenox\, MA\, 2021); Ricochet at the Katonah Museum of Art (Katonah\, NY\, 2021); and Rhythm of the Unseen at Soho Photo Gallery (New York\, NY\, 2023)\, as well as internationally at the Horsebridge Arts Centre’s Abstract Rhythm & Blue Notes exhibition (Whitstable\, Kent\, UK\, 2022). \n\n\n\nDeborah serves as a judge and speaker at camera clubs nationwide and teaches a range of photography courses via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Deb Rose and Tana Ebbole\, joined by Ginger Werz-Petricka\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will review Artist Statements and images and consider how they represent the theme or topic as presented in the Artist Statement. Self-critique is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to review their work with a critical eye. Even if you are not participating in Portfolio Project this year\, please join in and see some amazing photos and the hard work that has gone into developing these portfolios. \n\n\n\nThe Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 12. The Dyke Marsh trail\, which begins at Belle Haven Park\, is an out-and-back trail through woodland with water on one or both sides and views of the Potomac River and sailboats moored at the adjacent Belle Haven Marina.  There is an eagles’ nest and bald eagles can often be seen flying between it and various trees or snags along the trail.  Waterfowl and songbirds are often seen\, and foxes and barred owls have been seen there on occasion.  For those who want to get there early\, sunrise can be seen and is often reflected in the water along both of the small sandy beaches on the left/east side of the trail. DESCRIPTION:Making street portraits of strangers can be one of the most intimidating yet rewarding types of photography you will ever try. In this presentation\, James Prochnik will share his experiences making photographs of strangers wherever he finds himself\, from the suburban streets of Northern Virginia to his New York City home base. Through stories and examples\, James will take us through his process – how to prepare\, how to approach strangers\, and how to make pictures in the moment that you and your subject will both appreciate.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames Prochnik is a Brooklyn-based photographer focusing on lyrical documentation of the social and environmental landscape. SUMMARY:Member's Forum - (In Person) "Epic Journey 2.0:  Around the U.S. in 88 Days" with Alan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:Alan Goldstein\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nIn 2022\, Alan and wife Marty traveled around the U.S. in their 27-foot mobile home. The trip took 156 days and covered 18\,602 miles. Alan shot 21\,350 photos. This past summer\, Alan and Marty decided to go on another trip. While a good portion was spent in Michigan with Marty’s family\, the rest was to visit those places the couple missed in 2022 as well as visiting the remainder of the lower 48 states. \n\n\n\nThis Members’ Forum will show a small number of the more than 8\,300 photos Alan shot during the nearly 10\,000 miles of Epic Journey 2.0. \n\n\n\nA member of NVPS since 2012\, Alan has been involved in some way or other with photography for the past 56 years.  It all began with a science teacher instructing him on the art of film developing.  At that time\, he was using a Kodak Brownie.  Veering off during his teenage years to using an 8mm movie camera\, he returned to still photography during his college years and while working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAlan was supposed to call in a newspaper photographer for photos\, but she lived nearly 30 miles away\, so he opted to take photos himself.  At first\, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant\, crisp pictures.  But encouraged by a classmate and photographer\, Alan got access to the college’s darkroom\, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request.  This\, plus being a radio disc jockey probably contributed to his less-than-stellar GPA! \n\n\n\nAfter graduating from college\, Alan enlisted in the Navy\, becoming a Navy Journalist and later a Public Affairs Officer. \n\n\n\nHis high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR\, and that became Alan’s Holy Grail.  As a low-ranking Navy man\, Alan scraped up the money and bought his first true SLR — a Minolta SRT-101.  As he progressed up the Navy ranks\, he upgraded to a Minolta X700. \n\n\n\nFast forward to 2003.  Alan’s brother-in-law was getting married\, and Alan was the photographer.  An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100.   It was love at first click!  Since then\, Alan has had a D100\, D200\, D300\, D800\, D810\, and for the past seven years\, D850. \n\n\n\nAlan considers himself an advanced amateur\, even though he has made more than five figures making pictures.   His biggest job was making progress photos of the deconstruction and reconstruction of the D.C. public library in Georgetown. \n\n\n\nRetired from the Navy in 1994 and retired from Civil Service in 2011\, Alan is happy to spend his time traveling and making images.  He loves photographing just about everything\, but really likes night scenes and landscapes. His photos have been used for greeting cards by non-profits\, used for proposals by environmental entities\, have been used by sports web sites\, have appeared in newspapers\, and even hang in a gas station. \n\n\n\nAlan was the FotoFax editor from 2014 to 2018. Alan says he loves being a member of NVPS.  He has gained some great friends\, enjoys the camaraderie\, and has learned something new at nearly every meeting. \n\n\n\n\nJoshua Tree National Park is named for the abundance of the Joshua trees in the park. Originally declared a national monument in 1936\, Joshua Tree was redesignated as a national park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act. On August 10\, 1936\, after Minerva Hoyt and others persuaded the state and federal governments to protect the area\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the power of the 1906 Antiquities Act to establish Joshua Tree National Monument. Today\, the park spreads over 1\,242.4 square miles\, an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island.  The park includes parts of two deserts\, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. The earliest known residents of the land in and around what later became Joshua Tree National Park were the people of the Pinto Culture\, who lived and hunted here between 8000 and 4000 BCE. Joshua Tree National Park\, San Bernadino County\, Calif. 21 September 2023\n\n\n\nThe Lower Tahquamenon Falls. The Tahquamenon Falls are divided into the Upper and Lower Falls and are on the Tahquamenon River shortly before it empties into Lake Superior. They are the largest waterfalls in Michigan\, and one of the largest in the eastern half of North America. The water is noticeably brown from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains\, leading to the nickname “Root Beer Falls”. Tahquamenon Falls State Park\, Mich. 15 August 2023\n\n\n\nAn interpreter in the role of a British gunner fires a mortar during an artillery firing demonstration at Fort Michilimackinac. Fort Michilimackinac was an 18th century French\, and later British\, fort and trading post in the Great Lakes. Built around 1715\, and abandoned in 1783 when the British were victorious in the French and Indians Wars\, it was located along the southern shore of the strategic Straits of Mackinac connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan\, at the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan. The site of the fort in present-day Mackinaw City is a National Historic Landmark and is now preserved as an open-air historical museum. Mackinaw City\, Michigan.    800 North Huron Ave.\, Mackinaw City\, Mich. 13 August 2023\n\n\n\nTexas cowhands drive a herd of Texas longhorns down East Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards National Historic District of Fort Worth\, Tex.  The city of Fort Worth first established the Fort Worth Herd on 12 June 1999 to celebrate Fort Worth’s 150th anniversary by driving a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle from downtown Fort Worth to their home here in historic Fort Worth stockyards. Organizers were very concerned to ensure that the program told an accurate history of the period just after the Civil War\, when longhorns were in South Texas and driven along the Chisholm Trail through Fort Worth. The Chisholm Trail was the most important route for cattle drives leading north from the vicinity of Ft. Worth across Indian Territory (Oklahoma) to the railhead at Abilene. The typical drive comprised 1\,500–2\,500 head of cattle. The era of the cattle drive lasted about 20 years\, ending when the building of additional trunk lines of railway south into Texas caused rail shipments to take the place of trail driving of Texas cattle north to market. DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nJennifer Nguyen\n\n\n\nJennifer Nguyen learned about the Basic Photography and Developing photos using the chemical process during her last year at the Architecture University in Vietnam. She realized that photography was the passion of her life and her hobby\, but she had to stop pursuing this passion when she moved to the United States. She was so busy building her career by working full time and studying part time. After graduating\, she worked full time as an engineer at the Department of Defense and took care of her special needs son. She really didn’t have free time for herself at all. \n\n\n\nAfter retiring\, she came back to her passion and hobby in 2019.  Wow\, learning digital photography was easier\, and more interesting with Photoshop and Lightroom processing. Her photographic interests include landscapes\, nature\, macro\, studio portrait\, travel and ICM photography. She joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) in 2019 and her skills have improved since then\, because NVPS has many club activities. She received several awards within the NVPS’s monthly competitions with her passion and her inspiration from all other talented members.” \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany photographers adore the Autumn atmosphere with the cool air and the yellow and red leaves\, so Jennifer Nguyen went to Southern Maine in November 2022 to photograph the Autumn view. She visited Acadia National Park\, the area around it and Portland.

DESCRIPTION:These Are a Few of our Favorite Things…. \n\n\n\nArt and Deb’s interest in photography blossomed over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, they are living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography.  \n\n\n\nTheir travels have taken them through North\, Central and South America\, Europe\, and Asia.  Domestic road trips include Utah & Arizona\, Grand Canyon\, Route 66\, Louisiana\, West Virginia\, Maine (complete with puffins)\, the Oregon Coast and Covered Bridges from Maryland to the Finger Lakes of New York.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir interests span many types of photography including landscape\, street\, night sky\, and wildlife. Deb enjoys merging creativity with her photos. Using photoshop\, she blends watercolor painting and brush effects to create photo artistic pieces; and in a process she calls “Photo Alchemy”\, combines differing images to create new artistic compositions.  Art enjoys working in post processing to create realistic composites and impart a range of dramatic looks to his photos.  \n\n\n\nIn this print Members Gallery\, Deb and Art have selected some of their favorite photos to share with you. These are the photos that as soon as they saw them pop up on their computer screens from their cameras they thought: “We have to print that!”  \n\n\n\nTheir photos come from their road trips and travel. Each has a special memory that goes along with the image. See if you can guess why each photo became one of their favorites!

DESCRIPTION:During this review the Portfolio co-chairs\, Deb Rose and Tana Ebbole\, joined by Ginger Werz-Petricka\, will offer suggestions on the draft copies of portfolios for half of this year’s participants. They will review Artist Statements and images and consider how they represent the theme or topic as presented in the Artist Statement. Self-critique is a valuable tool for photographers to learn as they develop their personal photography projects and learn how to review their work with a critical eye. Even if you are not participating in Portfolio Project this year\, please join in and see some amazing photos and the hard work that has gone into developing these portfolios. \n\n\n\nThe Preliminary Review for Group 2 will be held on March 12. DESCRIPTION:Joint Field Trip with the Prince William Photography Club \n\n\n\n\n\nwww.studios.com\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a special joint field trip with members of the Prince William Photography Club. This is a chance to meet and shoot with new people who love photography and their photography club as much as we do ours.  \n\n\n\nIn February we will meet up at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station\, where we can photograph the architecture\, trains and people in the Metro station as well as the VRE train station located there as well. If the weather permits we can also spend some time photographing the exterior of the International Spy Museum (1 min. walk)\, the new\, all-glass Metro headquarters (6 min. walk) and HUD headquarters (8 min. walk). \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, February 11 from 2:00 – 4 :00p.m.   \n\n\n\nThere is no rain date for this event since it will take place indoors.      \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nBring lenses you would use for street photography (35mm or 50mm) and architecture photography (wide angle)\, or travel light by bringing a good walk-around lens like a 24-120 or 28-300. Since the Metro station is indoors\, a 2.8 lens or better glass would help you keep your ISO down.  \n\n\n\nTripods are prohibited in the Metro station. \n\n\n\nThere is free parking on Sunday on nearby streets\, including Independence Avenue\, but the most convenient mode of transportation would be to take the Metro to the L’Enfant Plaza station. \n\n\n\nYou will need to bring or purchase a Metro farecard in order to enter the Metro station (which you will have if you have arrived by Metro). \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\n      L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station \n\n\n\n      600 Maryland Ave.\, SW \n\n\n\n      Washington DC \n\n\n\nNVPS and PWCC members will meet just inside the turnstiles at the Maryland Ave & 7th St. SW entrance at 2 p.m.  \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n\nwww.wjla.com\n\n\n\nRena Schild\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.tripadvisor.co.nz

SUMMARY:Programs: (Zoom) An Illustrator's view of Landscape Photography with David Akoubian
DESCRIPTION:David started photographing in 1972\, mainly as an aid for his illustrating and paintings of nature. He found that the rewards of photographing were better than drawing or painting\, so he put down the pencils and brushes and continued with the camera and lens. In 1992 David decided to pursue photography as a profession. Since that date in addition to photographing he has taught classes and workshops around the US and Iceland. Currently he resides in the North Georgia Mountains in a place they call Bear Woods. Many of the bird images he creates are in his backyard which is a certified Wildlife Sanctuary. David’s work has appeared in many magazines and guide books\, and he volunteers his time and efforts to several conservation groups in Georgia as well as Wyoming. He is a Tamron Image Master\, an f-stop Gear Pathfinder\, and a Kase Filter Ambassador. \n\n\n\nIn this program you will learn how David approaches landscape photography while basing his compositions and vision from his days as an illustrator. He likes to use the same techniques that he worked with as a painter in his photography like incorporating elements to lead the viewer’s eye through the frame. David feels the quality of the light is critical to capture his vision and most of his images are done in a single frame simply utilizing great light. David will talk about the traditional “Rules” as well as why breaking them is so important. David will discuss photographing iconic locations\, then finding the “different” image as well. David will discuss settings and gear that is critical for capturing the image properly. Join David as he takes us on an inspirational trip through the landscape.

SUMMARY:Member's Forum:  (In Person) Into the Great Unknown: Grand Canyon River Rafting Photography Tour with Art and Deb Rose
DESCRIPTION:Join Art and Deb as they share their preparation and experience rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. Over 8 days they traveled 182 miles through 33 rapids\, hiked canyons and plateaus\, slept under the stars along the river\, all while capturing some iconic and beautiful photographs. This unique photography tour led by Colleen Miniuk and Hatch River Expeditions brought about a different way to think about taking photos\, bringing camera gear into harsh environments and maybe\, even just a little\, about modern life itself. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nArt and Deb’s interest in photography blossomed over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. DESCRIPTION:The Gathering\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther’s Member’s Gallery will include images taken in February 2022 in Dubai\, UAE―a city of amazing architecture\, ports\, beaches\, and a world hub of finance and trade. Dubai hosted the World Expo from fall 2021 to spring 2022 (planned for 2020 but delayed by the pandemic). It was a jaw-dropping event with innovative pavilions\, programs and people\, and a smorgasbord of photographic opportunities. \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer who loves the process of photography from the capture to post-processing. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects including landscapes\, abstracts\, colors\, nature\, wildlife\, and people\, but she is particularly drawn to architectural abstracts. \n\n\n\nJudy is currently the editor of the NVPS newsletter FotoFax\, and a member of the Art League in Alexandria\, the Maryland Federation of Art\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Collective. DESCRIPTION:BIO: \n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 when she started exploring ways to be creative and engaged after retirement. She has been primarily involved with the Portfolio Project and is currently the club president for 2023-2024. \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nGinger has been collecting the art of other people for her entire adult life. But that doesn’t mean she has ignored her own photographic art.  \n\n\n\nSometimes an image just calls out to her\, but very often the images that find a home on her walls are those she has entered into competition or those from shows. SUMMARY:Field Trips - National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:The National Gallery of Art provides a wonderful backdrop for capturing some unique images.  Let’s get inspired from our visit where we’ll immerse ourselves in over 150\,000 pieces of art while making some of our own. Though this field trip is not guaranteed to make you famous from the art you create\, it is guaranteed to entertain you on what might otherwise be a boring winter day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBesides the art exhibits\, you will find lots of interesting subjects including architecture\, lines\, colors\, shapes\, and street photo ops of people admiring the art in the East Building. Unlike the modern architecture of the East Building\, the West Building’s neoclassical architecture provides a more traditional layout including two garden courts\, a rotunda\, and expansive hallways connecting them. While some museums are extremely difficult to work in\, the National Gallery of Art offers a lot more space to spread out. That openness should make it easier to compose images to tell your story without annoying distractions. \n\n\n\nIf the weather is comfortably cool or the sun is just too nice to ignore\, consider a visit to the Sculpture Garden which lies further West of the West Building. The outdoor exhibit opens at 11am\, and in the winter\, the Smithsonian drains the fountain in the center and converts it to an ice rink (weather permitting). Also outside and between the East and West Buildings you will find a cobblestone plaza with pyramidal skylights and a sunken fountain.  \n\n\n\nMore information about the gallery’s current exhibits is available on their website:   \n\n\n\nhttps://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/current.html

DESCRIPTION:Natural Sand: \n\n\n\nThe image must include natural sand. Natural sand is a granular material composed of finely divided rock or mineral particles\, such as silicates and volcanic minerals\, as well as coral and biogenic sands – these result in sands that are white\, yellow\, tan\, pink\, green\, black\, and other colors. \n\n\n\nSand can’t help but play with wind and water to make beautiful and interesting designs. Sand is also a basic landscape material that might escape notice.  From the sand dunes on a wind-swept beach to desert sands\, sand castles\, meditation gardens\, local parks\, children’s playgrounds\, and sports fields\, the possibilities are all around us. \n\n\n\nCompositions can be created or found\, real or abstract. You may come across natural sand and human-made creations in both obvious places and places you may not consider until you start to look and pay attention. DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS since 2010-2011. He has served on multiple Board positions and is a past President. For the last ten years he has helped with photo workshops in Washington State\, New Mexico\, Alaska and Montana. He has also contributed to the Smithsonian North American Songbird project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter 30 years of film photography\, Stan jumped into the digital world in 2007. This past summer the company whose image storage system he relied upon for ten years and that housed over 800\,000 images\, went bankrupt. He had a dead box of images. This lead to relearning the new world of image storage. It was at about this same time that Jim asked Stan to present at E&T. It seemed that the topic of image storage and security had not come up at NVPS. While we all pay close attention to any new camera\, lens and processing technology\, how we protect our art perhaps gets less consideration.

DESCRIPTION:No other visual experience can compare with seeing a black hole in the sky\, surrounded by an inner corona with myriad shades of red with multicolor streamers expanding out from the sun in all directions. Even non-religious people describe a Total Solar Eclipse as a “spiritual” event. Veteran eclipse photographer Dan Ward will share tips\, tricks and suggestions for successfully imaging the next eclipse. April 8\, 2024 will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until Aug. 23\, 2044. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDan Ward\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA semi-retired Chief Workforce Economist\, Dan Ward is an avid amateur astronomer and photographer. He is actively involved with astronomy educational outreach for the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) and the Analemma Society. He regularly teaches classes on Stargazing with Binoculars\, Capturing the Night Sky with Smartphones\, and Eclipse Photography. SUMMARY:Field Trips:  Cyclocross
DESCRIPTION:Do you like action photography?  Have you wanted to try outdoor sports photography?  Would you like to have fun in the process?  In December we’re going to a free local cyclocross event known as the Capital ‘Cross Classic where you’ll have the opportunity to photograph cyclists up close and personal as they race on pavement\, on grass\, up and down hills and even carry their bikes over hurdles!  While this is a sporting event\, it is high-energy and very spirited: some riders wear costumes\, food and drink is handed out to the riders and some years there is live music. There is also a lot of cheering. It takes place in Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.  This is an all-day event (usually 8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) but we will go to the afternoon races\, which culminate in the exciting elite men’s race at 3:00 p.m. The event is held rain or shine (or snow) and if it rains or has recently rained the course and riders get muddy\, making for dramatic photos.    \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, Dec. 3 from 12:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.   \n\n\n\nThere is no rain date for this event since it will take place in the event of inclement weather.   \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n\nBoth short and long lenses have a place when shooting cyclocross\, so a walk-around lens with good range (e.g. 24-120 or 28-300) is the easiest lens to take.  However\, since the action is fast\, better glass will make for better images\, so a combination 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 would also work well.  Flash is often used to freeze the action and does not disturb the riders.  We suggest leaving tripods and monopods at home since there is a lot of walking the course\, some walking in tight spaces and moving around to get the right angle.\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those who can’t or don’t want to walk up hills or on uneven surfaces\, there is a flat area of the course that will also have good photo ops\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is free parking in the lot for the park and there is good turnover in spaces since some riders leave after their early races and others come in the afternoon for their later races. \n\n\n\n\n\nThere are restrooms at the park and there are usually one or two food trucks there for this event\n\n\n\n\n\nFeel free to go earlier and meet us at 12:15 p.m.  Races usually start at 8:00 a.m. and there is usually a race for kids under 9 years old at noon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe race schedule for this year has not yet come out but is expected to be the same as in years past.  If there are any changes in the schedule and therefore a change in the field trip time we will notify you well before the field trip\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nLake Fairfax Park \n\n\n\n1400 Lake Fairfax Drive \n\n\n\nReston\, VA \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 12:15 p.m. in front of the park office (which will be closed)\, which is the larger of the two structures in the park and located between the parking lot and the grassy part of the course.  \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024

DESCRIPTION:Interested in the latest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it shaken up photography?  David will present a 30\,000-foot view of AI and demonstrate current examples of AI that are currently in use in photography software editing programs.  He will demonstrate Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools and Luminar Neo’s newest AI tools\, GenErase\, SceneExpand\, and SceneSwap. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDavid Crooks\n\n\n\nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursues his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his neighborhood to visiting many local and faraway\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, David\, his wife Cynthia\, and their dog Sam moved to Annandale\, Virginia\, from Leesburg\, Virginia\, to be closer to work.  He was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS).
