DESCRIPTION:Prints (Virtually): Mandala – From Ordinary to Extraordinary with Kirk Johnson\nKirk Johnson is an seasoned photographer who has been taking digital photos for the past decade.  A Nikon shooter\, Kirk is interested in a variety of subjects to include wildlife (in November 2019 he did a photo shoot in South Africa and Zimbabwe)\, architecture\, street and urban\, portrait\, black-and-white\, floral and abstract.  Kirk uses an array of post-processing tools to create his final product including Photoshop CS6\, Topaz Studio\, Photomatix\, and PortraitPro. \nA proud member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS)\, Kirk has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including: 2019 Annual Photography Award (APA) – Honorable Mention for Wildlife category\, 2017 International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA) – Nominee Award for Abstract photography; the 2014 Great American Country  (GAC) – Hunt for Americana Photo Contest – United States Southern Region Finalist; and numerous NVPS monthly and end-of-year competition awards.  Additionally\, his photographs have appeared in Outdoor Photography.com\, Bliss Magazine\, twice in Shutterbug.com “Photo of the Day\,” and inside the Willing Warriors Retreat at Bull Run (Reflecting Pond and Lincoln Memorial)\, and in the 2020 Burke and Herbert Calendar – for the month of August (Jefferson Memorial).  You can see some of Kirk’s photo creations on www.kirkjohnsonphotography.squarespace.com. \nKirk\, a retired Naval officer\, lives in Alexandria\, Virginia with his wife\, Leslie.  Currently\, he works in Washington\, D.C as a Staff Director for the federal government. \nTonight\, Kirk will be presenting some of his (virtual) prints of Photo Mandalas; taking ordinary photographs and using Photoshop to create mandala-like images. \n   \n  \n  \nDigital: Street Photography: a patchwork of day-to-day images from around the world with Ilenia Alvarez\nIlenia has been attracted to photography from an early age. She started with an old Minolta camera that belonged to her aunt. She would usually be the designated photographer during family trips\, reason why she may not appear in a lot of the family photos. Ilenia got her first Canon DSLR camera in 2011 (which she will pass on to her eight-year old niece); but\, it is not until later in 2016\, that Ilenia became more interested in improving her photography technical skills. \nIlenia enjoys landscape\, night and long-exposure photography however travel photography and street photography are the dearest to her heart. The digital collection for this member’s gallery includes some of her favorite photos taken during her travels in Europe\, Africa\, Latin America\, and the Middle East but mainly in Asia\, from 2012 through 2019. Considering the current limitations for travel\, Ilenia has recently purchased a macro lens\, and she plans to experiment macro photography with various subjects at home. \nIlenia joined NVPS in 2018. DESCRIPTION:Prints (Virtually):Passages with Fred Krebs\nFred Krebs\nFred’s “Passages Portfolio” began more than 15 years ago on a business trip to Veracruz\, Mexico.  The walkway under the walls of San Juan de Ulúa\, an old Spanish fort\, immediately caught his eye—something about its colors and symmetry drew him in.  He stopped and simply stared down its long expanse.  The repetition reminded him of what you see when you hold a mirror up to a mirror.  Since then he has looked for other passages that have had a similar impact—ones that draw him in\, make him stop and simply look deep into the scene before him.  Once he  began looking for these passages he began to see them. \nFred Krebs came to work in DC in 1975.  In his first paycheck he paid for his rent.  In his second paycheck he purchased a camera (which he still has). After 40 years as an attorney\, lobbyist\, association executive and professor Fred now work diligently at being 100% retired with grandchildren\, travel\, golf and photography being his primary interests.  He takes pictures of things that are of interest to him. Fred felt like he was in a photographic rut so he joined NVPS in 2018 to improve his skills.  Fred says that so far he has had fun with the club as well as a valuable experience that has made him a better photographer. \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nDigital: From Angkor Wat to Hanoi: Travels in Postwar Cambodia & Vietnam – Part I Cambodia with Bill Corbett\n(Part II Vietnam scheduled for 12/22/2020) \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels. \nBill and Judy moved three summers ago to southern Loudoun from McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He is still just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly.  His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing.  It is fun. \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions)\, a member of NVPS for the past ten or so years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan and enjoyed/suffered through more than a few travels to other points as a minor representative of American diplomacy.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there. \n

DESCRIPTION:JUDY GUENTHER\, photographer\, enjoys capturing scenes from her world travels in a variety of styles from storytelling to discovering small details in ordinary scenes. Capturing the beauty and art in nature and the people of the world is a special joy for her. Judy also enjoys photographing details in architecture and looking for abstracts. She shoots with an Olympus OMD-EM1 Mark II with a variety of lenses and is also enjoying her new Apple 11 Pro Max. Judy enjoys the creativity of post-processing using a variety of tools and packages. DESCRIPTION:Shape and Texture\nBy Ginger Werz-Petricka\n \nGinger joined NVPS in 2009 at a point in her life when she really needed to find a creative outlet. Over the years she has been involved with Members Gallery and Education and Training\, but her special interest has always been the Portfolio Project. \n \nShe has been interested in photography since high school and while studying for a fine arts degree in college concentrated on printmaking and photography as her media.  Looking back at early images it has become evident that dramatic light\, shape\, and texture has always been a driving force in her work.  Ginger shot with a Canon 6D for several years\, but after injuring her foot in 2017 has found that her lightweight mirrorless Olympus OMD mark ll has become the camera of choice.\n \n“One of the first questions a photographer always seems to get is ‘What kind of photography do you do?’    My answer is all kinds.  I’m aware that some people think that a photographer needs to specialize\, but if you see the world as shapes\, textures\, light\, and shadow\, any subject is fair game.  Perhaps the exceptions are that I’m not really interested in standing in the woods waiting for birds and animals to make that perfect shot.  I love to get them when they’re cooperative…but.\nFor this collection\, I wanted to include some recent works illustrating the kind of images that make me want to pick up my camera.”\n\n \n\n\n  \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nNatGeo Arctic Expedition\nby Len Johnson \nIn the Summer of 2019\, Len took an 18-day trip to Iceland\, Greenland and the Canadian High Arctic on the National Geographic Explorer ship. This ship is relatively small with only 148 guests plus crew. The expedition team of experts included a naturalist\, two NatGeo photographers\, and regional specialists that shared their knowledge and insights on the wildlife\, landscape\, and local culture. \nThis journey included a street festival in Reykjavik\, Iceland to celebrate their 24th Annual Culture Night\, and a visit to the Whale Museum that features a life-size replica of a great blue whale. There was a short flight from Reykjavik to a small landing strip in Kangerlussuaq\, Greenland where the expedition group was transported by Zodiacs to the National Geographic Explorer ship.\nWe then cruised down the length of Kangerlussuaq Fjord en route to Sisimiut\, a former whaling port on Greenland’s west coast. This small-town features brightly painted colored buildings from the 18th century. \nWe began our exploration of the Canadian High Arctic with a visit to the small Inuit community of Pond Inlet where we saw a cultural and arts presentation by village children and elders. We then sailed to Dundas Harbor where we hiked on the tundra. The ship continued its voyage into Lancaster Sound where we saw polar bears on the drifting icebergs. \nAs we continued the voyage to Dundas Harbour on the Southern shore of Devon Island\, we experienced a magnificent cliff exposing a three-billion-year long geological history of the area.\nAs we continued to explore the Arctic and the Russian Far East\, we sailed to Fram Fjord\, Ellesmere Island. We continued on our journey to Philpots Island where we saw massive icebergs that recently calved from the huge glacier descending from the Cunningham Mountains.\nA highlight was Buchan Gulf\, Baffin Island with its dramatic cliffs carved by Ice Age glaciers that had clouds hovering over their peaks. As our journey continued\, we set anchor in the town of Ilulissat on the West coast of Greenland. Here we visited the archaeological UNESCO World Heritage-designated Ilulissat Icefjord in the Sermermiut Valley.\nThe trip ended sailing through Greenland’s ice cap and picturesque waterways until we returned to Kangaamiut airstrip for the journey home.\nThe Member’s Forum video presentation will be a selection from Len’s photos that feature his favorite images including polar bears\, whales\, soaring icebergs\, and massive glaciers. The presentation also includes colorful buildings in Greenland’s Sissimiut community and photos of the World Heritage site of Ilulissat Icefjord captured on this expedition. \nLen Johnson Bio \nLen Johnson received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Illinois and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was sent to Fort Monmouth New Jersey for training as a photographer. Upon completion of his training\, he was assigned to a base in Okinawa\, Japan where he photographed military ceremonies\, Bob Hope’s USO Tour visit\, and local cultural activities. While in the Far East\, he also traveled to India\, Thailand\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, and the Expo 70 World’s Fair in Osaka\, Japan. \nAfter his military tour of duty in 1971\, he and his wife settled in Arlington\, Virginia and Len began working at a three-person graphic design firm. After ten years as an employee\, he purchased the firm upon the owners’ retirement. He then grew the firm to a 15-person integrated marketing communications firm called JDG Communications. JDG had clients in the government\, corporate and nonprofit sectors and he sold his company in 2009. Since his retirement\, Len has served as a volunteer for the Washington DC chapter of SCORE that mentors small business entrepreneurs. \nHe has been a member of NVPS since September 2015 and appreciates the educational and social opportunities it provides. He photographs using two Fuji X-T3 cameras and likes to shoot landscapes\, nature\, and wildlife. On previous photo journeys\, he photographed wildlife in Africa\, wildflowers in the Arizona desert\, landscapes in Tuscany\, and architecture in Rome and Florence. Len’s next photo adventure will be a photography workshop in Argentina and Chile in March and April of this year. \n    \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Prints with Fran Bastress \nFran Bastress\nFran will entertain us on January 28 with a collection of the beautiful photographic images she’s created in recent years. Fran has been involved in photography for decades\, and sees it as a way to connect with the extraordinary in the world. She captures and creates her images because of their beauty\, uniqueness\, and elements of design. Inspired by the North American landscape\, she has traveled its highways and byways to discover limitless possibilities for harvesting art from nature in the magical light of early morning and late afternoon. \nShe has been drawn especially to America’s West and South\, and recently Iceland. \nFran became more engrossed in photography after buying a secondhand Hasselblad and taking a photography course in Boston\, where she developed her darkroom skills. Black & white photography was her passion while living in New England\, and she found the area rich with photographic possibilities. \nMoving into digital after shooting with film\, Fran has advanced through a variety of Canon’s single lens reflex cameras\, most recently to the 5D Mark IV. She has participated in photo tours and workshops\, but now she and her husband do extensive research to create their own photography adventures. \nFran personally handles all aspects of her art\, from image capture to framing. She uses Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and a variety of plug-ins\, including the Nik and Topaz collections. \nFran has been active in NVPS for nearly 10 years\, and served on its board two years as secretary. DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Eva Lanyi \nTitle: Portfolio Excerpts \nA member of NVPS since 2015\, Eva Lanyi has been interested in photography since her first blurry black and white photos of the neighbor’s dog\, taken with her Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  School\, work\, and life in general created other priorities for many years. Since retiring from a 32-year federal career as an analyst\, she’s been able to concentrate more on photography and plans to make it a big part of her life going forward.   She constantly works to improve her technical and artistic abilities\, while keeping photography a fun\, enjoyable endeavor.   \nMs. Lanyi does mainly landscape and garden photography\, because she loves being outdoors.  She has also started doing bird and wildlife photography. In addition\, believing that the natural world is imperiled by human activity\, she would like her photography to show the grandeur of Mother Nature before it is gone.  She also constantly scrutinizes trees\, rock formations\, leaves\, sand (anything\, really) for interesting\, more abstract scenes from nature. Every photography adventure\, for her\, is an opportunity for a “personal best” photo. She works with Nikon equipment and a trusty Manfrotto tripod.  You can view some of her work at evalindalanyi.com. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n“Digital” with Philip Winters \nDigital Image Gallery – Philip Winters – Norway\, a Country of Sea\, Mountains\, Snow\, and Ice  \nPhil started taking pictures as a kid\, using an old family box camera.  In his teens\, he got to use one of his father’s older range finders for his intermittent photo efforts. He received an SLR\, he thinks it might have been a brand called Miranda\, as a high school graduation present and began taking as many photos as he could with the usual limited funds of a college student. Once his income rose above zero\, he splurged on a Minolta SLR\, a step up with modern features like a built-in light meter. During his working life as a Federal Budget Analyst in the Congressional Research Service\, he continued taking photos\, mostly for fun and for family and now has thousands of slides and prints locked safely away in sleeves and boxes\, possibly never again to see the light of day. In the 1980’s\, his wife took her students on five-week tours of Europe and Phil got to go along on several of them\, taking as many film rolls\, mostly slides\, as he could stuff in his luggage. An after-trip party was held that included a slide show – who remembers those? – that Phil put together.  \nOnce the digital era arrived\, he bought a 3-megapixel non-DSLR of some forgotten brand (he doesn’t remember the brand and can’t find the camera in his photo equipment graveyard). He remembers that the camera took fairly decent pictures\, as long as you didn’t blow them up or crop them. Since then\, he’s moved on\, first to a Nikon 90\, followed by a Nikon 7000\, both very nice cameras\, but his shoulders and back complained about the weight of the accumulation of stuff in the camera bag. That led to his current cameras\, the mirrorless Sony 6000 and Sony 6300.  His shoulders and back gave him a big thank you. He keeps a Nikon point-and-shoot in his car\, just in case\, and of course has his phone ready for photo emergencies. \nHe’s very happy that he joined NVPS several years ago (he says it feels like forever – in a good way).  He’s learned a lot\, including better composition\, being almost comfortable using Lightroom\, and enjoying being able to cut and mat his prints.    \nHe hopes you enjoy his photos of Norway.  \n    \n

DESCRIPTION:“Prints” with Curtis Gibbens \nTitle: The Wild Side \nCurtis Gibbens\nCurtis Gibbens has been taking outdoor photography for over 20 years. His interest sparked the first time he stepped on the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows Park. He did not realize such a wetland environment existed in Fairfax County. \nCurtis has many landscape images\, but wildlife is his favorite subject. Most of his wildlife images are birds – they are everywhere\, from national parks to his back deck. \nCurtis enjoys visiting great locations like Yellowstone\, Bosque del Apache\, and Alaska\, but finds the Washington metro area provides many opportunities for nature photography. Mountains are two hours west and the Eastern Shore is two hours east. Curtis’s favorite day trips are Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge\, Maryland. However\, Huntley Meadows Park is still his favorite photographic location today. \nCurtis has been a NVPS member for almost 20 years. He gained great knowledge throughout the years such as having an eye for photography\, exploring new subjects and locations\, and gaining knowledge of his Nikon equipment. \nHe had an image selected by the North American Nature Photography Association in “Expressions”\, 2016. Curtis was the album photographer for an alternative band\, “The Mood”. He has also been drafted to take pictures at work and church events\, which is when he wishes no one knew of his photography interest. He currently has a government job and can’t wait to retire and to devote more time to photography. Here are some of Curtis’s images. \n  \n    \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n“Digital” with Jim Sinsheimer. \nTitle: Architecture and the Urban Landscape \nAs an architect and design/construction manager for the past 45 years\, I’ve been engrossed in the creation of building and interior spaces\, mostly within the urban environments of Phoenix\, Southern California and lately Chicago. Photography has always been an integral part of my career even from college where we had a small darkroom in the College of Architecture at the University of Arizona back in the early 70’s. I started merely documenting my completed projects\, then progressed to construction documentation. Along the way\, I realized that there was an artistic bent to be captured if I only looked beyond the basic forms. Images became more expressive and expanded into the urban context itself.   I hope to convey the fascinating opportunities of capturing these types of images in my presentation.  \nMy introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when my Dad converted a coal bin (we now had gas heat) to his darkroom.  However\, my interest really took off in college.  I’ve been a member of NVPS since last year having moved recently to Virginia from Southern California to be with our grandson and his family.  My work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork and will be soon featured again LensWork’s “Seeing in Sixes”.  I have had showings at the California Department of Transportation Headquarters\, the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles and currently in a large digital wall at the 71 South Wacker building in Chicago.  For several years\, my images have won awards at the Orange County (CA) fair. \nI’ve been a Canon shooter forever – I still have my FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces. For the future\, I’m working on a portfolio of architectural details to install at the 71 South Wacker digital wall. Travel photography to Europe is also in the plan. DESCRIPTION:Print Matting Tutorial \nBob and Willa Friedman will do a mini-matting tutorial on Tuesday\, September 24\, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, before our regular meeting\, in the back of the room.  Participants should bring a mat cutter and practice mats if they have them\, and be prepared to start promptly at 6:30 p.m..  Bob and Willa will also bring some practice mats. \nMember’s Gallery \n \nBirds\, Travel & More \nBill Corbett is a bird and travel photographer who enjoys color\, action and texture in his pictures.  A photojournalist in college\, Bill resumed spending serious amounts of time on photography when digital cameras came along.  He is a Nikon shooter who prefers a long lens and who uses a flash anytime he can. Bill enjoys competing his images at NVPS and making albums from pictures he and his wife Judy take on their travels.     \nBill and Judy recently moved from McLean\, where they raised their three kids\, out to the Willowsford development in southern Loudoun County.  They spend most of the summer in Delaware\, where Bill takes his camera to wildlife refuges regularly. He is just beginning to explore the photo opportunities in Loudoun and west of there.   His main photography goal is to keep on doing what he’s been doing; it is fun.   \nBill is the secretary and a former president of Nature Visions\, a member of NVPS for the past ten years\, and the winner of a small number of photography ribbons and awards from those two organizations. \nBill is a retired foreign service officer and trade negotiator who served in Washington\, Korea and Japan.  Follow him on Facebook for his views on current events; he doesn’t post his pictures there.    \n \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nFlying Critters \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and to be able to capture the beauty of nature is the reward.  From his early days of chasing after cardinals in his neighborhood\, to visiting  many local and far away\, parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wild life” lives\, David pursues his love of photography. \nFive years ago\, David\, his wife\, and their dog Sam\, moved to Annandale from Leesburg to be closer to work.  He was a member of Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then joined NVPS. He is currently the Webmaster of the NVPS website. \nIn January 2015\, David decided to create a local photography Meetup.  He knew there were many great places to photograph the wildlife along the beltway near his house.  Four and a half years later\, the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group has over 1\,900 members and he leads about two field trips a month. \nCurrently David uses a Canon 7D Mark II with a Sigma 50-500mm lens on a gimbal head and tripod.  David has three destinations on his bucket list: Iceland\, Cuba\, and Costa Rica\, in no particular order! \nThe title of his presentation is “Flying Critters\,” a slideshow of his photos of birds and bugs in flight.  Enjoy!

DESCRIPTION:Member: Ron Taylor – Favorites \nDescription: The collection includes some of Ron’s favorite images. \nThis collection includes some of Ron’s favorite images. He has been making photographs on an occasional basis for several years. Ron uses Nikon equipment.  His walkabout camera is a Nikon D750 with a Nikon 24-120 lens. He uses use a Tamron 150-600 lens for distance shots and a Nikon D105 for close-up work. \nRon began competing in Class 1 in 2016\, was promoted to Class 2 in 2017 and to Class 3 in 2018.  He was named both Class 2 Monochrome Photographer of the Year and Versatile Photographer of the Year last year.   \nIn addition to serving as Co-VP Competition in 2018 and 2019 he served as Vendor Manager for the 2018 Nature Visions Expo.  His image “Black and White Sunflower “ won First Place at the 2018 Nature Visions Expo. \nFor the past eighteen years Ron has headed his own company\, The Ron Taylor Group\, specializing in leadership and project management training and consulting.  During that time he has served as an Adjunct Professor in the graduate programs at both Virginia Tech and George Mason University and as President of the Washington DC Chapter of the Project Management Institute which\, with over 10\,000 members\, is the largest such organization in the world. \nRon has been married for 30 years to Yvonne.  His son\, daughter-in-law and grandchildren have been living in New Zealand for the past 5 years\, and he is delighted to say they returned to the U.S. in March and are now living only three time zones away in California. \nRon’s future photography plans include continuing to learn from others and trying to become a better photographer. \n \n\nMember: Kieulan Nguyen   \nDescription: Return to my Motherland after 43 years \nKieulan Nguyen has been doing photography for a long time\, but it wasn’t until 2010 that she took her hobby seriously.  Kieulan is a Canon and Fuji shooter. She enjoys macro\, landscape\, urban photography. Now that her children are grown up\, she has more time to travel so travel photography is something that now interests her.  Because photography keeps evolving\, she never stops learning. She is always looking to bring new and fresh air into her pictures. Being creative is very important for her because it reminds her that she does not take pictures\, but rather makes pictures.   \nKieulan often thought there were so many countries she would love to visit. Viet Nam rarely made her bucket list despite it being her motherland.  After seeing so many wonderful images taken of her country\, her desire to go home grew over time. So after a 43 year absence\, on a spur of the moment in 2018\, she agreed to join her friends to go back for 3 weeks.  That was the best decision she has made.  \nKieulan’s collection is of photos she took during her trip to Viet Nam.  During her visit she spent 12 days driving along many winding country roads from Ha Noi to Ha Giang\, Hue\, Hoi An\, Phan Rang and Phan R. Most of the time it rained\, but it did not stop her.  Every place she visited had its own charm and beauty. She loved every moment she was there. Through her modest lens\, she wants to share with you these images of a beautiful country she is so proud to call home. \nUntil then … Viet Nam\, she will definitely return! \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Member: Roger Lancaster –  “Scene From My Eyes” \nBio for Roger Lancaster \nA native of Western Canada\, Roger first handled a camera when he was 6 years old when his grandfather\, a photo journalist\, let him use his old fold up camera. But it was not until he retired as an association executive 10 years ago that he took a serious interest in the craft. He sees photography\, not just as a record of events in life\, but an opportunity to bring the outdoors inside for all to enjoy. He also sees it as an opportunity to bring out his creative side\, and enjoys the artistic side of processing images as much as he does in capturing the photo. \nRoger initially shot landscape images\, but in recent years has gravitated to a more eclectic style with macro photography\, and experimenting with monochromatic processing of images. \nRoger has received numerous awards for his photography\, including the Best of Loudoun photo for two years running at the Waterford Fair\, an award sponsored by the Loudoun Now newspaper. A number of his images have been juried into Nature Visions Photo Expo. Many of his images have appeared in both popular and photographic journals and he has been the featured photographer in several issues of Grand Strand magazine\, a popular South Carolina based publication. Many of his images can be found in private collections. \nRoger has been an active member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society since 2008. He has also just completed a 2 year term as President of the Nature Visions Photo Expo\, the premier nature photography expo in the Mid-Atlantic region. He currently uses a Nikon D500 as his primary camera\, although he has 3 other Nikons as spares. For processing he uses Lightroom and Photoshop\, and uses numerous filters\, especially the Topaz series. \nRoger and his wife Bunny live in Waterford and invite any members of NVPS who want to enjoy shooting photos in the outdoors to come and visit. \n    \n\nMember: Chuck Campbell – “A Shot in the Dark” \nDescription: This presentation is a compilation of outdoor images which were shot after sunset and before sunrise.  Most of the images were shot with a slow shutter speed to compensate for the lack of natural light.  And many of the images contain colorful artificial light and water reflections.   \nBio: Chuck Campbell is a long-time NVPS member and volunteer.  He enjoys the quiet solitude of shooting images long after others have gone home for the evening or before they wake up and get in the way of a good shot. When traveling\, Chuck always takes a tripod because he knows he will be taking many shots in the dark.  Unfortunately\, as he traveled across Europe and the U.S.\, he has missed many good meals with his wife as he waited for just the right blue-hour light.  With this presentation\, he will happily share those lonely\, hunger-induced images with you. \n  \n  \n  \n    \n

DESCRIPTION:NEAR AND FAR (Clark and Joan Barker) \nClark Barker \nClark’s photographic experience has mostly been as a tourist taking snapshots of interesting places visited and photos of his son and daughter when they were children.  After retirement as a staff analyst from the Navy Comptroller Clark and wife Joan have taken several overseas trips with organized tour groups. The use of tripods was not an option and the lighting was “as is” during bus stops and city tours. A fair number of photos were taken through a bus window. \nClark’s first “real” camera was a used 35mm fixed lens Voigtlander followed by a Minolta SRT101 when he became gainfully employed after college.  After a couple more Minoltas\, mostly using slide film\, he entered the digital age with an 8 megapixel Olympus\, followed by several Canon cameras.  He currently uses a Canon 5Dmk3 with Canon lenses. Most of the pre-digital photos became 35mm slides. \nClark used Photoshop Elements to process and print digital images for many years\, upgrading to Lightroom/Photoshop CC after joining NVPS four years ago.  He attributes improvements in technical skills and composition to NVPS and was the class two color print Photographer of the Year for 2016-2017. He cuts his own mats and does his own printing\, currently with an Epson P800 printer and his favorite paper is Ilford Gold Fibre Silk.  \nHe enjoys taking travel photos\, especially landscapes\, but has begun exploring other types of photography such as wildlife and macro since joining NVPS. \nJoan Barker \nAlthough Joan has always enjoyed photographing family and places they visited\, she was not sure that she would enjoy being a part of a photography club.  Joan was using a point and shoot camera at the time and knew nothing about F stop\, Shutter Speed\, or ISO.  Needless to say Joan has learned a lot in the past 4 years.  She now shoots with a mirrorless Panasonic Luminx Micro 4/3 camera and finally understands how to get off auto.  \nShe enjoys shooting landscapes\, flowers\, and abstracts.  Joan has surprised herself with the success she has had in the monthly competitions from the very beginning.  She loves doing post processing on the computer as it encourages her creative juices.  \nBeing retired gives her more time to pursue many interests and Joan is  pleased to add that photography is now one of them.  Joan was an educator and taught elementary school before her children were born. After kids\, she chose part time teaching and eventually administration in Early Childhood.  \nClark and Joan have two children\, a girl and boy\, and 3 grandkids.  They are favorite subjects to shoot for both of them.  In the future she would like to continue to improve her technical skills while keeping the creative side as a big part of what she does.  Joan is interested in becoming more proficient in monochrome photography. She appreciates all the help she receives from Clark and her two Mentors\, Willa and Willa.  Joan has learned a lot from these ladies reinforcing what Clark tries to teach her at home.   \nYes\, Joan is glad she joined as she enjoys the people and the programs but especially the competitions.  So much thanks to Bill Vanderpool and Nancy Dubiell for their encouragement to join NVSP. \n   \n\nTitle: Highlighting Varied Subjects \nDescription: Judy’s show will feature photos of varied subjects taken in the last couple years.  A number of locations will be highlighted\, many of them just a day trip away. \nBio: Judy McGuire became interested in photography and travel when she was 10 and took her first road trip to the western states with her family and her Kodak Brownie camera. She took snapshots documenting family\, friends\, pets and travels for many years before getting a Nikon SLR for slide photography\, and currently shoots with a Nikon D7200. \nSince she joined NVPS in 2001\, the club’s activities and members have been a constant inspiration for learning and improving her photography. Judy believes regular practice is critical to developing skills – as she tried to impress on young students during her many years of teaching piano. But in photography – as well in music – another part of the experience is enjoying the results! \nJudy is most interested in travel and nature photography and loves to photograph anywhere\, searching out back roads as well as obvious sites. She enjoys giving slide shows for various groups\, and makes calendars and note cards using her photographs. Her work has been juried into Nature Visions and the Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibits\, and published in Virginia Wildlife Magazine. She has won a number of awards in NVPS competitions\, including Slide of the Year\, Advanced Digital Image of the Year and Advanced Digital Photographer of the year three times.

DESCRIPTION:Stay Photographically Nimble\, Find Your Go To Place By Stan Bysshe \nWe all love to take pictures. I’d like to think that over the last forty years I have learned something about photography but I keep finding new ways to improve. Traveling to far off photogenic destinations can be inspiring\, but those trips\, for me\, are often separated by long time gaps. So the challenge becomes how to stay photographically nimble. When I was photographing primarily underwater\, I loved to visit the same reef time and again. Now\, shooting exclusively on land\, I have found my go to location near my home\, Huntley Meadows. Of course I travel locally to other spots\, but I try to get to Huntley at least once a week. Some mornings nature surprises me\, some mornings are slow\, but in every instance I have a camera in my hands and I have to deal with the conditions and subjects as they present themselves. Besides being outdoors\, I love that my time at Huntley is spent finding a special moment in nature and trying to capture it.  \nAll images were taken either with a Nikon D5 or D500. All were on a tripod and with one of two lenses\, Nikon 80-400mm and Nikon 500mm f4.  \nI love to print but try to keep it simple. I use an Epson Sure Color P800 with Epson papers\, pre cut mats and mat boards. \n    \n\nTom Schum (tomschumelectronics.com) Bio\nSince I was a teenager\, photography has been a hobby.  I shot and developed and printed monochrome 35mm in 1967-1970\, but took a long break to raise a family and pursue an electronics engineering career. \nLate in my career I was able to re-start the photography hobby\, this time digital.  After having a great time with a pocket Minolta Dimage X\, I bought a Canon 30D in 2004 and a Sigma point and shoot in 2006.  This was followed by more Sigmas and eventually some Fuji cameras. \nNow that I am retired I welcome lots of uncommitted time\, the ultimate luxury.  What better way to spend it than to aimlessly wander around town acting like a tourist? \nBy the time I retired\, I had spent way too much time sitting in front of the computer processing hobby images.  I concluded I don’t need to learn more about this end of photography. While I like to look at some of the arty images done by the many gifted members of this club\, I prefer to leave electric wires\, visual clutter\, litter\, and bird poop in my own images.  I like the authenticity. \nI like to watch and listen as the latest Lightroom and Photoshop techniques are ably explained and demonstrated in full detail at the NVPS meetings.  And\, I especially like not having to remember any of it. I’m not progressing in my technical skills. It’s too much like work! \nMy photographic vision is similarly hap-hazardous\, but every hundred or so snaps I get a keeper.  I even print now and then. I used to have an Epson R2000 but threw it out after years spent buying way too many ink cartridges.  I can highly recommend Nations Photo Labs on the web\, so long as you turn off their “color correction”. \nSo\, I don’t really have a photographic vision\, only just to shoot and enjoy. \nI like landscape\, street (if I can avoid bothering anybody)\, some wildlife\, standard tourist type photos and\, of course\, grandchildren (one so far). \nI joined NVPS in 2017 and prefer to shoot my Fuji X-T100 with manual lenses.  I have no future goals or plans for the development of my photography. \n    \n

DESCRIPTION:Eva Lanyi\nA member of NVPS since 2015\, Eva Lanyi has been interested in photography since her first blurry black and white photos of the neighbor’s dog\, taken with her Kodak Brownie Instamatic (which she still has).  School\, work\, and life in general created other priorities for many years. Since retiring from a 32-year federal career as an analyst\, she’s been able to concentrate more on photography and plans to make it a big part of her life going forward.   She would like to improve her technical and artistic abilities\, while keeping photography a fun\, enjoyable endeavor.  \nMs. Lanyi does mainly landscape and garden photography\, because she loves being outdoors.  She is trying to improve at bird and wildlife photography. In addition\, believing that the natural world is imperiled by human activity\, she would like her photography to show the grandeur of Mother Nature before it is gone.  She also constantly scrutinizes trees\, rock formations\, leaves\, sand (anything\, really) for interesting\, more abstract scenes from nature. Every photography adventure\, for her\, is an opportunity for a “personal best” photo. She works with Nikon equipment and a trusty Manfrotto tripod.  You can view some of her work at evalindalanyi.com. \n  \n    \n\nChuck Campbell:  A Shot in the Dark\nNote: This presentation has been rescheduled for April 23\, 2019 \nThis presentation is a compilation of outdoor images which were shot after sunset and before sunrise.  Most of the images were shot with a slow shutter speed to compensate for the lack of natural light.  And many of the images contain colorful artificial light and water reflections.  \n \nChuck Campbell is a long-time NVPS member and volunteer.  He enjoys the quiet solitude of shooting images long after others have gone home for the evening or before they wake up and get in the way of a good shot. When traveling\, Chuck always takes a tripod because he knows he will be taking many shots in the dark.  Unfortunately\, as he traveled across Europe and the U.S.\, he has missed many good meals with his wife as he waited for just the right blue-hour light.  With this presentation\, he will happily share those lonely\, hunger-induced images with you.\n

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: "Digital" with Paula Neumann and "Prints" with Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:Paula Neumann\n A Week in Normandy \nPaula’s interest in photography has developed over time. Paula was definitely more comfortable with a point and shoot camera until relatively recently. Her first experience with an SLR was as team photographer for her daughter’s summer and high school swim teams. From 2000-2010 she took 10’s of 1000’s of photos at meets. She learned some basic Photoshop skills and posted images on team websites and provided images for end of season slideshows. When her daughter headed off to college in 2010\, Paula decided that she needed to develop a serious hobby to fill the void at home. She took three photography classes at the art league in Alexandria over the next 2 years and has been hooked on photography ever since. \nPaula joined the NVPS in 2013 after she retired from her 26 year career as a pathologist at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Her years behind the microscope have trained her to look at things carefully and critically\, to notice patterns and details. Her love of the outdoors and travel have provided her with ample photographic opportunities. She enjoys photographing flowers\, landscapes\, and architecture. She has become more adept at post-processing and primarily does this in Lightroom. She is currently using a Canon 7D Mark II camera. She uses her images to make travel books\, calendars and photo cards and shares them online. NVPS continues to be a valuable resource for education and growth. She enters the monthly competitions with regularity and has received a variety of awards\, but mostly she enjoys learning from the critiques of both her own and other members’ images. Paula’s goals in photography include branching out into portraiture and abstract imaging\, learning to be more patient with bird photography and learning to be more creative in post-processing. \nHer digital presentation is titled “A Week in Normandy” and is a collection of images from a recent trip to Normandy\, France. Normandy is a photographer’s delight with its long and varied history\, quaint villages and half-timbered buildings\, its beautiful countryside with apple orchards\, pastures\, fields and farms\, and its spectacular coastline and beaches. \n\n  \n  \nGeorgette Grossman\nUnder the Tuscan Sky \nTake a tour of Tuscany through my photographs. The scenery is remarkable. Light and shadows play on the wheat-field landscapes giving them velvety contours. Clouds billow against the blue skies. Colorful laundry hangs out windows to dry. Poppies and olive trees mingle in the fields. Cypress trees line the driveways. \nThese images were taken in May 2018 while I was on a landscape workshop with John Barclay and Rad Drew. \nGeorgette’s journey in photography began 12 years ago when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born. Not capturing the cute smiles she wanted\, she switched from a point’n’shoot to a DSLR (Nikon D80). She attended her first Nature Visions show at Meadowlark in 2007 and discovered there were camera clubs in the area! She joined NVPS in January 2008 and was hooked on photography as a hobby. She was the president of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) from 2014 to 2015. \nGeorgette advanced her photography skills by taking hands-on classes. Some of her instructors included John Gonsalves\, Eliot Cohen\, Corey Hilz\, Nikhil Bahr\, Josh Taylor\, Mike Moats\, Don Rosenberger\, and Denise Silva. By attending NVPS lectures\, workshops\, and field trips she believes her photography has evolved to a higher level. Participation in competition has helped to give her a critical eye when capturing and post-processing her images. She reads online columns daily to keep “up to date” on new camera equipment and software tips. Recently Georgette switched from a Nikon D7200 camera to a Fuji X-Pro2 and a Fuji X-T3 to lighten her load.  \nGeorgette captures moments she wants to remember. Her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, and nature\, but her favorite subject is flower close-ups and macros. Lately she is dabbling more with B/W images. \nSeeing her images in print completes the photography journey. Georgette has shown her images at  \n\nThe Art League in Alexandria\, VA\, \nthe Glen Echo Annual Labor Day Art Show\, \nthe ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Exhibit\, \nNature Visions annual exhibit\, and \nthe Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit. \n\nFrom August–October\, 2018 she had a solo exhibit at Beanetics Coffee Roasters coffee shop in Annandale\, VA. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: Digital with Kevin Linde;  Prints with Kevin Egan
DESCRIPTION:I was born and raised in Johannesburg\, South Africa and moved to Canada in 1992 where I met my wonderful wife\, Debby. In 1998 we moved to Northern Virginia with our 2-year-old son\, Ryan. Our second son\, Jared\, was born in 1999 when we moved into our current house in Fairfax. My boys are now in college\, with one at the University of Alabama and the other at George Mason. We also have two dogs that are wonderful photography subjects. I currently work as a physical therapist at my own private clinic\, which I founded in 2003\, in Fairfax City. I became interested in photography about 13 years ago when I bought my first Canon DSLR. Prior to that I had a Pentax SLR\, which I owned for about 5 years prior to switching to digital. I learned the basics with this camera but was never that interested in photography. The change to digital provided instant feedback\, which allowed me to learn beyond the basics a lot faster. I also enjoyed the post processing which I am constantly learning to this day. I currently use Canon equipment that I have accumulated over the years. My favorite subject to shoot is motor racing\, which is influenced by my interest in the sport. Not far behind is anything else interesting to shoot. The great thing about photography is that you can take a photo of almost anything out there and make it something unique. I have been a member of NVPS for only one year but have enjoyed meeting some wonderful people and some great photographers. I enjoy sharing my photos but also enjoy seeing the great talent of others. I am not sure at this point in time where my photography may take me but until then I will continue to learn as much as I can and will never stop learning. \n   \n \n \n \n————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————\nKevin Egan \nKevin has been enjoying the art of photography since his dad allowed him to waste a few rolls of film with his old brownie camera many moons ago.  He was a very active photographer in high school and in the early years of college\, but putting himself through college proved an expensive ordeal and he was eventually forced to sell his camera and concentrate on school. \nThen an amazing thing happened – the digital sensor was created and the age of digital photography began.  Once the price of digital cameras came down\, and the sensors became better\, Kevin once again began to dabble in his photographic passion.  Somewhere around 2010\, Kevin began searching for a photo club that would afford him a chance to rub elbows with others with the same passion\, and he finally found a home here at NVPS! \nKevin loves to try to create digital art\, and although he loves to shoot rust and chrome\, his interests are not concentrated only in that area.  He loves to shoot waterfalls\, landscapes\, cityscapes\, and streetscapes. \nKevin shoots Canon and has done so for many years\, currently learning to make the most of his 5D Mark IV.   \nIn his real life\, Kevin works for US Customs and keeps the IT equipment working for their facilities overseas.  He hopes to be able to retire someday\, so that he can concentrate on the important stuff – like photography! \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: Digital – Steve Glintz – Print – Christine Tran
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glintz\nTwo Hour Images by Steve Glintz\nSteven graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Computer Science and currently works in Northern Virginia as a software engineer.  For fourteen years\, Steven has supported the U.S. Navy and its allies through the development of air defense simulations and trainers and modernizing tactical control systems on-board submarines.  For the past six years\, Steven has been supporting the intelligence community. \n\n \nSteven spends his free weekends with his Nikon D800e capturing landscape\, architecture\, street\, long exposure\, and wildlife images.  He also enjoys creating macro and other abstract images in his make shift studio at home.  Post processing involves a combination of Adobe Lightroom for cropping\, color\, and dynamic range corrections.  He also uses Photoshop for heavy lifting such as focus stacking\, photo stitching\, and the occasional elimination of unwanted distractions such as dust spots.\n \nSteven has been a member of NVPS for 8 years.  During that time\, he has served the club in various capacities ranging from web maintenance\, digital competition preparation\, backup laptop operator\, and lending a helping hand at every meeting.  Besides attending programs and competitions at NVPS\, outside influences such as periodicals published by Digital Photographer and Digital Camera World as well as Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively and Freeman Patterson’s Photographing the World Around You have tutored him through his early years.\n \nLast year\, Steven completed his first portfolio on Washington’s National Cathedral.  Two years prior to that\, Steven captured images of Western Ireland and the hilltowns of central Italy and Venice.  Fortunately\, Steven’s presentation demonstrates the wide variety of photographic opportunities available to local residents of the Washington metropolitan area who do not need to spend a lot of money on travel.  No matter your interest\, budding photographers are guaranteed a winning image in less than a two hour drive.\n \n\n \n \nLike Old Cheese and Wine by Christine Tran\n\n\nPeople like to take pictures of beautiful flowers and they tend to forget the wilted and droopy ones. To Christine each stage of the life cycle has it’s own beauty. These are the ” mature” flowers through her lens.\n \nAs an amateur photographer\, Christine started photography in 2014 with a Canon 70D. She has a particular fascination for macro and landscape photography. She is currently shooting with a Canon 5D Mark III and just bought a Fuji XT-2 for her upcoming trip to Vietnam in October. Christine joined NVPS in  February 2015.
