DESCRIPTION:Jim McDermott’s photography draws from travel and from our beautiful “DMV” region. Some of the photographs come from trips to Alaska’s Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park and New Mexico’s White Sands National Park and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. \n\n\n\nJim McDermott\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJim McDermott is this year’s Education and Training coordinator for NVPS. Trained as an economist\, he finds the trade-offs among shutter speed\, aperture\, and ISO intuitively sensible. He particularly enjoys wildlife photography\, although he enjoys just about any opportunity to practice his craft. \n\n\n\nHe credits NVPS and many friends in the club with challenging him to become a better photographer. At NVPS\, he’s helped coordinate field trips and served as Program VP. He also worked to arrange speakers for Nature Visions\, prior to it becoming Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn-Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery: Virtual (In-Person) -  Wildlife Images from 2023 with Rena Schild
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic sparked Rena’s interest in wildlife photography.  She has recently started travelling to photograph wildlife in other parts of the country and will share some of her wildlife images from 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nRena Schild\n\n\n\nRena has been interested in photography since she received a film camera as a college graduation gift\, but was sidelined by the practice of law until she had time to take some photography courses in the 1990’s.  She then began experimenting with many types of photography\, including family portraits\, events\, red carpet\, sports\, fine art and most recently bird photography.  Rena is currently happiest capturing athletes and birds in motion but thoroughly enjoys all photography\, especially outdoors.  She joined NVPS in early 2020.  \n\n\n\nIn-Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Patagonia and Beyond with Fred Krebs
DESCRIPTION:Patagonian Sunrise–at Lago Grey Hotel\nFred Krebs just returned from a 3 1/2 week Overseas Adventure Travel trip around Patagonia. This presentation will include images from across that remote\, diverse and incredibly beautiful region as well as a few from Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls (spectacular in its own right). \nFred joined NVPS in 2018 and is thankful for how much it has helped him improve his photographic skills. He generally takes away something from each meeting that he can use. Fred especially appreciates the Portfolio Projects and how much he learns from his participation. \nFred takes pictures of things that interest him (which frequently changes). Since retiring Fred and his wife have increased their travels and the photo opportunities have grown as well.  He loves travel photography but his pictures may include just about anything else. Recently\, he has become especially fascinated with black and white and hopes to improve in that area. \nFred purchased his first camera in 1975 shortly after coming to Washington\, DC for a new job.  The first paycheck paid the rent and with the second he bought an Olympus OM 1 (which he still has). While he has tried virtually every brand of camera from Canon to Sony\, Fred remains partial to Olympus and the mirrorless MFT system because of its relatively small size. However\, he took several of the photos in this presentation with his iPhone 13\, which has assumed an increasingly larger role in his photography. He subscribes to the saying\, “the best camera is the one you have with you”.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually) Birds - One Photo Per Species with David Kravitz
DESCRIPTION:Description: David took this invitation as a challenge to create enough acceptable photographs of birds to fill a 10-minute presentation without repeating species. The photographs were taken in the U.S.\, Costa Rica\, Ecuador (the Galapagos Islands)\, and Iceland \nBio: David Kravitz enjoyed Black and White photography (with his own darkroom) for 2-3 years around 1970\, but then life intervened and time for photography faded away. He always intended to return to photography when he retired\, which he did in June 2019. He researched local photography clubs and\, because he concluded that it would provide the best learning opportunities\, he joined NVPS – a decision he has never regretted. He considers himself a neophyte and is still open to almost all areas of photography. He devotes the most time to nature photography\, but also enjoys travel\, documentary\, street\, and sports photography.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Street Photography with Phyllis Kimmel and Suzy McIntire
DESCRIPTION:Phyllis Kimmel and Suzy McIntire will share a combined Member’s Gallery focused on street photography around Washington DC and New York. Phyllis will share photos from local street fairs and festivals in Washington DC – both spontaneous and street portraits – along with some other local and NYC street photography. Suzy enjoys walking around the city\, noticing what people and animals are up to\, and capturing their sometimes unusual activities. \nBIO – Phyllis Kimmel \nPhyllis has loved photography for as long as she can remember and was thrilled with the Canon AE-1 she received as a Bat Mitzvah gift from her grandmother.  Eventually Phyllis went digital and shot with Canon DSLRs until\, in 2023\, she took the leap to a Fuji mirrorless camera. \nPhyllis combines her love of hiking and the outdoors with photography.  She spends her weekends camera in hand\, exploring trails\, mountains\, parks\, gardens\, and more.  She finds herself drawn to the beauty in the ordinary and focusing on capturing the smaller details around her.  Over the past six years\, Phyllis has been a volunteer photographer for a local non-profit\, Community of Hope\, and with that\, began aspiring to become more comfortable with people as subjects.  More recently\, she’s stepped even farther outside her comfort zone with street photography—a fun endeavor.  \nPhyllis has been a member of NVPS for the past nine years or so.  She received an Honorable Mention at the October 2022 Art League Patterns exhibit\, and in February 2023\, two of her photographs won first and second place in their categories of the Washington Gardener photo competition. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nBIO – Suzy McIntire \nWith her first Olympus film camera\, Suzy McIntire took all the photos for her 2002 garden book (An American Cutting Garden\, UVA Press). For many years at the Natural History Museum\, she photographed small fossils for researchers and the collections database.  Using a microscope\, scientific camera\, and software for “extended depth of field” (EDF) photos\, these were composites sometimes of as many as 25 pictures.  She once was asked to photograph what a museum visitor claimed was a fossil apple—this visitor planned to sell it to Apple for a million dollars to fund his retirement. (A paleontologist had to tell him it was not a fossil apple.)  \nIn 2012 Suzy won the Washington Post Humor Photo Contest for a photo of an outhouse on a dinosaur dig in Wyoming.  Tiring of documentary pictures\, she got a Fuji camera three years ago and found happiness in street photography and urban landscapes. This past month she was pleased to get a photo into the Exposed DC annual competition.  She has been an NVPS member since 2019\, unless it was 2018.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Nostalgia-Field Trips Before Covid with Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Willa will be just reminiscing.  Field trips are always fun and looking back at the pictures we took is fun too. \nBIO: \nWilla’s first job after college was as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, Her first summer there\, she had a choice of several summer projects—filing\, cleaning small animal cages or photographing wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools. She claimed to be able to do photography and brought home a camera and a light meter.   Bob taught her everything she needed to know over the following weekend and her work was published. Bob still claims to have taught her everything she knows.  \nWilla has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, and Santa Fe Workshop in Santa Fe\, NM.  She has also had extensive courses in Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. She has been a member of NVPS since 2004 and has learned a great deal from the members and speakers. She has held many positions and is currently coordinator for the solo shows at Beanetics. \nWilla won Photographer of the Year in Novice Monochrome in 2006\, Advanced Monochrome in 2009 and Color Print of the Year in 2008.  Willa has work on display at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and Falls Church Arts.  She has an image in the permanent collection of the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts. She has had several images published in the Northern Virginia Review and has won their Best in Visual Arts award twice\, and was also published in Elan Magazine\, as well as being in numerous juried shows.   Willa has had solo shows at 1st Stage\, the Stone Tower Gallery at Glen Echo and has had several shows at Beanetics Coffee Rosters in Annandale and has been a guest artist at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Staying Local with Tana Ebbole
DESCRIPTION:Tana has thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to explore and photograph what she calls “local” places. She feels there are many amazing national and state parks\, formal gardens\, museums\, architecture\, and interesting neighborhoods and towns nearby. One really does not need to travel far to experience  places to photograph\, and since neither she nor her husband are great travelers\, they feel fortunate to live in an area of the country that one does not have to go far to seen new and interesting sites.  Tana feels that NVPS members will recognize the locations in her slide show and hopes that what she has captured represents these sites through interesting and appealing photographs. \nBIO \nTana Ebbole\, an Arlington based photographer\, seeks interesting flowers\, landscapes\, and scenes to photograph\, finding that the solitude and peace of being outside in nature or working in her ad hoc studio help her to achieve total focus and a place of calm and peacefulness. She has been selected in several juried competitions\, and is a member of NVPS and the Art League’s Gallery 75.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): A Five Month Journey Around the US with Alan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:After months of planning and making reservations\, Alan and his wife Marty set off on April 25\, 2022\, for a 156-day journey around the U.S. in their 27-foot motorhome. The trip took in 25 states and many National Parks as well as other interesting places. They returned on September 27. Obviously\, Alan made photos.  Over 21\,000!  This presentation attempts to distill those 21\,000 images into a 10-minute Members Gallery. \nBIO \nA member of NVPS since 2012\, Alan has been involved in some way or other with photography for the past 60 years.  It began with a science teacher instructing him on the art of film developing.  At that time\, he was using a Kodak Brownie.  Veering off during his teen-age years to using an 8mm movie camera\, he returned to still photography during his college years and while working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper. \nAlan was supposed to call in a newspaper photographer for photos\, but she lived nearly 30 miles away\, so he opted to take photos himself.  At first\, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant\, crisp pictures.  But encouraged by a classmate and photographer\, Alan got a 35mm camera and access to the college’s darkroom\, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request.  \nAfter graduating from college\, Alan enlisted in the Navy\, becoming a Navy Journalist and later a Public Affairs Officer. \nHis high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR\, and that became Alan’s Holy Grail.  As a low-ranking Navy man\, Alan scraped up the money and bought his first true SLR — a Minolta SRT-101.  As he progressed up the Navy ranks\, he upgraded to a Minolta X700. \nFast forward to 2003.  Alan’s brother-in-law was getting married and Alan was the photographer.  An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100.   It was love at first click!  Since then\, Alan has had a D100\, D200\, D300\, D810\, and since November 2017\, a D850. \nRetired from the Navy in 1994 and retired from Civil Service in 2011\, Alan is happy to spend his time making images.  He loves photographing just about everything\, but really likes night scenes and landscapes. His photos have been used for greeting cards by non-profits\, used for proposals by environmental entities\, have been used by sports web sites\, have appeared in newspapers\, and even hang in a gas station. \nAlan says he loves being a member of NVPS.  He has gained some great friends\, enjoys the camaraderie\, and has learned something new nearly every meeting.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Italy's Adriatic coast towns with Clark Barker
DESCRIPTION:Scenes from Clark and wife Joan’s last overseas pre-covid journey to Rome\, Malta\, and the Adriatic Coast of Italy by small ship\, ending in Venice. \nBio: \nFollowing college and gainful employment Clark purchased a Minolta SRT101 which was mostly used to produce slides.  After a couple more Minoltas\, a digital 8 megapixel Olympus and several Canons he went mirrorless with a Canon R5 the first day it was available.  Clark’s photographic experience has mostly been as a tourist taking snapshots of interesting places visited and photos of his son and daughter when they were children.  After retirement Clark and wife Joan took several overseas trips with organized tour groups. \nClark joined NVPS in 2015 and was the class two color print Photographer of the Year for 2016-2017.  NVPS membership has led to vastly improved comprehension of shutter speed\, aperture and ISO.  He uses Lightroom/Photoshop CC and Topaz for postprocessing.   \nHe enjoys taking travel photos\, especially landscapes\, but has more recently begun exploring other types of photography such as wildlife and macro. \nPhotos on the 2019 trip to Malta and Italy were taken with a Canon 5D mark III camera.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): East Africa - Again with Nancy Dubiell and Bill Vanderpool
DESCRIPTION:Even though we have been to East Africa before\, we welcomed this\, our fifth trip.  Although the land is the same\, the people and the animals are always different.  This trip\, with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)\, included Kenya\, Tanzania\, and Rwanda. \nBIO:    \nNancy and Bill have been members of NVPS since\, well\, since the Washington Gas days. They started getting more serious about photography as their travels commenced\, first within the States and then overseas.  This was their 22nd trip with OAT. \nThey started with slides and\, as they transitioned to digital\, kept the old habit of trying to get the image right in the camera\, with minimal post processing.  Most of their photography is of their travels.  Bill likes street photography and Nancy leans towards landscapes.  Both enjoy wildlife photography. \nAfter a long dry spell of traveling due to Covid\, they have recently started back with a summer trip to Ireland and this one of 3 ½ weeks to Africa.  They are already signed up for at least one trip this year and another in 2024.  Both use Canons and have recently changed to the Tamron 18×400 as their “all-in-one” travel lens.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Egypt\, Jordan and the Valleys of the Vendors with Bill Corbett
DESCRIPTION:This fall Bill and Judy Corbett joined a group tour to see the pyramids in Egypt\, Petra in Jordan\, and many other antiquities in between.  Along the way\, Bill took the opportunity to photograph not only the iconic sites\, but also the people at work in those places.  Bill often shot surreptiously and silently\, using a wide angle lens\, the camera upside down at hip level\, and set for a high frame rate. The denizens of the “valleys of the vendors” were his favorite subjects \nA photojournalist in college\, Bill Corbett returned to photography fifteen or so years ago with the advent of digital tools.  He enjoys nature and travel photography the most.  He has been a member of NVPS since 2011 and is a past president of Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formerly Nature Visions).  Bill and Judy moved to Aldie in Loudoun County in 2017 after 23 years in McLean\, where they raised their three kids.  He served for two decades as a U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator.

DESCRIPTION:For the past year or so\, Eva stayed close to home for her photography adventures.  Exploring local gardens and natural areas for plants and animals to photograph was incredibly rewarding.  She was able to capture nature in all four seasons and experience the changes it undergoes with time’s passage.  Starting and ending with spring\, her slideshow will take you on the journey with her. \nEva has been interested in photography since childhood and still has her first camera\, a Kodak Brownie Starmatic.  She dabbled in film photography for many years until about 10 years ago\, when she got serious with her first digital camera.  Now she spends much of her spare time enjoying photography and improving her skills.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Arizona Skies with Debra Mastronardi
DESCRIPTION:Debra will present a collection of images from storm chasing during Arizona’s monsoon season. \nDebra was introduced to photography by a classmate while in college\, and was instantly  hooked.  She gets inspired by what is possible when looking through the lens.  Growing up in New York City combined with her love of travel\, she explored different genres from cityscapes\, landscapes\, architectural\, and most recently\, street.  She discovered she has always been a street photographer at heart but never realized that until she digitized all her photos.  Debra enjoys exploring new genres of photography and honing her street photography skills. She joined NVPS in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:For a few weeks every year\, nature photographers converge on the Appalachian Mountains to capture the beautiful fall foliage. Yet this unique region offers year-round opportunities for image making\, as Dave hopes to convey to you. \nDave Lattanzi got into photography over 20 years ago after finding his mother’s old Canon AE-1\, primarily to impress his girlfriend. His love of photography has lasted far longer than that relationship. His photographic journey started with traditional black and white darkroom processes that still influence the way he shoots today. \nHe has a love of both nature and travel photography\, often in combination. He has been fortunate enough to travel the world with his camera\, having visited 50 states\, 5 continents\, and more countries than he can count. But his heart belongs to the West Virginia highlands\, and he is devoted to capturing the unique beauty of those lands. He counts Fay Godwin\, Bruce Percy\, Clyde Butcher\, and Galen Rowell among the myriad photographers that have inspired him over the years. He has been a member of NVPS since 2018. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Alaska Brown Bears with Len Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Alaska Brown Bears presentation is a collection of photos taken by Len Johnson during a photography workshop led by Tom and Cree Bol in July 2022. This was a 7-day adventure that started in Anchorage Alaska. The 8-person group of photographers flew in Piper Cub planes to Salmon Creek Lodge in Lake Clark National Park. We landed on the beach in front of the lodge and stayed there for six days. \nEach day was a new adventure as we traveled in open carts pulled by 4×4 vehicles in search of roaming bears. We also walked out on the beach behind the lodge and came within 30 yards of the mother bears strolling with their cubs. The bears were grazing on sedge grass and digging in the beach sand for clams. Even though we were extremely close to the animals\, they never appeared to feel threatened by the photographers\, and we also felt secure in our distance. Most often a mother bear had two or three cubs near her. Our workshop included early morning expeditions and afternoon sessions that lasted until dusk. \nThe trip ended with a helicopter flight to the Kink Glacier where we landed on the tundra. We debarked from the helicopter and strapped spikes to our boots to give us traction on the ice. The scene was both desolate and beautiful as we carefully walked across the ice. Actually\, it felt like we were walking on the moon! \nThis was a “bucket list” adventure that I look forward to sharing with NVPS and hope it makes you want to experience it yourself. \nBIO \nAfter graduating with a BFA degree in graphic design from the University of Illinois\, Len served three years in the U.S. Army as a photographer during the Vietnam War era. Upon completing his enlistment commitment\, he joined a 3-person design firm in Washington\, D.C.\, where he worked for seven years. He began his business career when he purchased the firm from the owner upon his retirement. Len operated his firm JDG Communications (JDG)\, for 30 years. JDG tripled in size and became an award-winning brand development and integrated marketing firm with national accounts. Government agencies selected his firm for high-profile federal programs\, including the FTC Do-Not-Call launch campaign\, the SBA Business.gov website launch\, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Centennial celebration\, and the rebranding of the U.S. Agency for International Development. \nThe growth of the business with its talented team and valuable government contracts made JDG an acquisition candidate for other integrated marketing firms in metropolitan Washington\, D.C. In 2009 he sold his firm to Sage Communications (Sage). \nHe has been a member of NVPS since 2014 and appreciates the opportunities it provides for learning from experienced professional photographers’ presentations and competition critiques. He also values the friendships he has made through NVPS meetings and events.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Flower Photography with Georgette Grossman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is all about FLOWERS…some photographed in nature\, some in a studio setting\, and some captured in grocery stores with my cell phone! Each flower has its own personality and I love photographing their beauty.  \nBio: \nGeorgette Grossman’s love of photography began in earnest when her granddaughter\, Ava\, was born in 2006. Before then she had played with point’n’shoot cameras but never understood what was really going on inside the “box.” The following year\, when Ava began to move around faster than her point’n’shoot could capture her smiles\, it was time to buy and learn how to use a DSLR (Nikon D80 was her first). Georgette took a class through Fairfax County Adult Ed. Her first instructor\, John Gonsalves\, was wonderful. He told the class on the first day of instruction that we all had expensive cameras with lots of automatic features\, but we were going to learn how to shoot manual! Initially the class was terrified\, but somehow the concept of aperture\, shutter speed\, and exposure fell into place. Tell a story he would say; fill the frame! Georgette’s journey in photography had begun. \nGeorgette learned about the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) at Meadowlark in February\, 2008 and she joined shortly thereafter. The club was a source of endless people who LOVED photography as much as she did—folks who were willing to share their talents to help her improve her photography. The meetings provided wonderful programs and hands-on workshops that made learning fun. \nGeorgette especially remembers participating in a Portfolio Project where Joe Miller announced that in this day of digital technology almost anyone could take a decent picture\, but it took effort to capture great images. What a true statement! Monthly competition became a way to learn what makes an image better. Watching everyone’s images being critiqued\, became a useful learning experience. \nIn 2010 Georgette was elected the Secretary/Historian for NVPS. She was elected the president of NVPS for the 2014-2015 term and has served as an Advisor to the Board ever since. \nShe photographed with a variety of Nikon DSLR’s but switched to mirrorless Fuji in 2016. Currently she uses the Fuji X-T3 and loves the fact that she can “see” what the image will look like before she presses the trigger. She also photographs with her Pixel 6 cell phone camera. \nGeorgette uses her photography to share her vision of the world with others. She captures moments she wants to remember; her subjects include abstracts\, people\, places\, nature. Flowers are a favorite. During the COVID pandemic she did not get out to photograph much\, but\, every time she grocery shopped she captured the flowers in the Giant and practiced various post-processing techniques in Lightroom\, Photoshop\, DXO Nik\, and Topaz Studio 2. Some of those images are in her presentation. \nShe had a solo exhibit at Beanetics Coffee Roasters coffee shop in Annandale\, VA. . Her images\, A Man and his Dog and Quiet Lunch were selected for Volume 31 of The Northern Virginia Review\, Spring 2017. Her image African Daisy was the cover image in The Washington Gardener Magazine in 2019. Georgette has exhibited her images at The Art League in Alexandria\, VA\, the Glen Echo Annual Labor Day Art Show\, the ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Exhibit\, Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions Expo annual exhibit\, Washington Gardener Magazine\, and the Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit. SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Abstracts – Just for Fun with Joan Barker
DESCRIPTION:This gallery presentation will showcase how much Joan enjoys using Camera Motion and computer manipulation to create images beyond reality. \nJoan joined NVPS in 2015.  Although Joan has always enjoyed photographing family and places she visited\, she was not sure that she would enjoy being a part of a photography club.  Joan was using a point and shoot camera at the time and knew nothing about F stop\, Shutter Speed\, or ISO.  Needless to say Joan has learned a lot in the past 7 years and now shoots with the mirrorless Fuji X-T3. \nShe enjoys shooting landscapes\, flowers\, and abstracts.  She loves doing post processing on the computer as it encourages her creative juices.  This naturally led to her interest in abstracts as there are so many opportunities to manipulate an image digitally. During the pandemic\, she joined her churches’ photographic team and spent many hours safely documenting their events both outdoors and eventually inside as well.  \nJoan was an educator and taught elementary school before her children were born. After kids\, she chose part time teaching and eventually administration in Early Childhood.  \nYes\, Joan is happy she joined NVPS as the group has inspired her to try new techniques and enabled her to enjoy the works of so many excellent photographers.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: A Walk With Nature with Sarah Olsen
DESCRIPTION:Sarah loves to travel and capture her experiences through photography.  While working remotely during the pandemic\, she hiked many National and State Park trails throughout the United States including Yellowstone\, Grand Tetons\, Rocky Mountain\, Zion\, Bryce Canyon\, Arches\, Joshua Tree\, Mt. Rainier\, Columbia River Gorge\, Haleakalā\, Grand Canyon\, Saguaro\, Sedona\, Acadia\, and Shenandoah.  Walking with nature has given Sarah an appreciation of the depth\, breadth\, and the beauty of the great outdoors.  This gallery highlights photos from Sarah’s travels over the past two years\, shot entirely on her iPhone.  She frequently pulled her iPhone out of her hiking backpack to capture shots of the stunning landscapes and interesting silhouettes along the way.Sarah is a beginner photographer and new member of NVPS\, joining in the Fall of 2021.  She was inspired by her father and fellow club member\, John Olsen\, to further develop her photography skills.  Sarah has attended several NVPS field trips with her Dad over the years.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): A View from the Street with Robin Weisz
DESCRIPTION:Robin will present a galley of architecture\, shadows\, reflections\, and street photography. \nRobin was introduced to photography as part of the curriculum in her work towards her BFA in graphic design. Working her way through college as an assistant in the photo lab she spent many hours helping others with their processing of film and black and white prints. From the very beginning Robin found herself drawn to images of architecture\, abstraction and reflections. That continues to be the main focus of her work. Robin is a full-time graphic designer with her own studio\, Robin Weisz Design (robinweiszdesign.com). The studio’s focus is on publication design for non-profits and higher education. Robin’s architectural photography has been featured in many publications designed for UCLA. \nOriginally from New York\, Robin has been a full-time resident of Los Angeles for the past 40 years. Fellow NVPS member\, and high school classmate\, Rena Schild suggested that since the NVPS meetings were now virtual she might be interested in joining. She has enjoyed the virtual meetings and participating in the competitions and feels she has learned a great deal from her membership and the critiques.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: People\, Places and Things with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:People\, Places and Things (but not in that order!) \nThis presentation is broken into three parts:  People (street photography)\, Things (that caught my eye) and Places (landscapes and places) from our travels over the last few years. \nGreg Smith Bio: \nEnthusiast to Opportunist to Hobbyist to “Something More”? \nGreg became familiar with photography from an early age.  His father\, serving in Ireland and Cyprus\, took many pictures throughout their many travels\, always considering angles and framing the subjects when he could\, and describing what and why as he did so.  Many a slide show was enjoyed!  \nGreg got his first SLR (Minolta) prior to deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures.  However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from 3 blocks away to get it all in!  He secured his lens at the Navy Exchange in Naples\, and so the enthusiast was hooked. \nWhen Greg’s wife upgraded her camera\, he took over her Nikon 5600 and began taking pictures again.  He was able to have a cup of coffee with a retired Marine who introduced him to NVPS\, showing him several amazing award-winning photographs.  K-12 invited Greg to visit a club meeting\, which he did\, along with his wife\, and shortly after they joined. \nSince joining NVPS he has enjoyed the inspiration of seeing amazing pictures\, the creativity of other members and the focused opportunities afforded by the themed competitions.   Taking more pictures led to upgrading to a Nikon D750\, and with the encouragement of his wife\, adopted shooting primarily in manual mode.  \nNow Greg enjoys shooting whatever he happens upon: birds and landscapes primarily\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity.  He is becoming more purposeful in his photography\, moving from just shooting snapshots to thinking about compositions and seeking out better environments for capturing images.  He and his wife Gitta are anticipating an RV trip to Denver\, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks\, with many stops along the way\, and hopefully will have many opportunities to expand his skills.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Getting to Know You with Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan
DESCRIPTION:This evening will be an NVPS first: a Group Member’s Gallery featuring three of our newer and new to gallery presentation members. Susan Blalock\, Suzy McIntire and Terri Lannigan present three mini Member’s Galleries. \nSusan Blalock \nSusan got her love of photography from her grandfather and helped him develop photos for family holiday cards in his home darkroom which was located a closet under the stairs.  She purchased a digital camera several years ago and the pandemic gave her the opportunity to spend more time taking photos.  Finding NVPS was quite the happy accident for Susan when she started to look for a local camera club to join.  NVPS’ weekly meetings\, variety of speakers\, field trips\, and the mentor program were all interesting and last winter she decided to join the Club.  Since the Fall Susan has been working with mentor Will Friedman and so far their focus has been working on black and white images.  Willa’s guidance has helped Susan to improve how she sees images and improved the tonal range of her images.  Susan is still very much a “newbie” and she enjoys nature photography\, long exposure\, and macro\, but is not opposed to giving any genre a try. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nSuzy McIntire \nSuzy has had two wonderful mentors since she joined NVPS in 2019: Willa Friedman and Stan Bysshe. She can’t thank them enough for help to learn her Fuji\, how to shoot in RAW and use HDR and LightRoom\, how to choose a picture for competition\, and the importance of “knowing her bird.” There was excellent discussion of issues around street photography\, and some pictures even got competition awards\, although not when she didn’t listen to Willa. \n\n\n\n\n\nTerri Lannigan \nTerri was introduced to photography by her father\, an avid photographer of nature\, trains and automobiles.  They spent many hours hiking and capturing photos\, mostly landscape\, with her trusty Pentax K1000.  The cost of film was prohibitive during college and early professional years\, and photography fell by the wayside.  With the advent of digital photography\, and with young children\, Terri again picked up the camera for family events and vacations.  As the kids got older\, and time was more available to return to hiking and to devote to the craft of photography\, Terri was lucky to be encouraged by Georgette Grossman to join NVPS.  She hasn’t looked back!  Originally\, thinking that she would focus on mammals and landscape\, she found that vision difficult to realize for short weekend jaunts and ended up developing a love of birds\, insects and tree frogs.  NVPS has been a huge contributor to her growth as a photographer and she is looking forward to continuing to learn and grow through the many resources available here.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Greek Islands 2021 with Kirk Johnson
DESCRIPTION:For this Members Gallery\, Kirk will be presenting photographs that were taken during a November 2021 cruise to the Greek Islands. \nKirk Johnson is a seasoned photographer who has been taking digital photos since 2012.  A Nikon shooter\, Kirk is interested in a variety of subjects that include wildlife (in November 2019 he did a photo shoot in South Africa and Zimbabwe)\, architecture\, travel\, street and urban\, portrait\, black-and-white\, floral and abstract.  Kirk uses an array of post-processing tools to create his final product including Photoshop Creative Cloud Topaz Studio\, Photomatix\, and PortraitPro Studio. \nKirk has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including: six photo creations on CBS Sunday Morning (2021 & 2022)\,  2019 Annual Photography Award (APA) – Honorable Mention for Wildlife category\, 2017 International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA) – Nominee Award for Abstract photography; the 2014 Great American Country  (GAC) – Hunt for Americana Photo Contest – United States Southern Region Finalist; and numerous NVPS monthly and end-of-year competition awards.  Additionally\, three of his photographs were juried into the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions competition and a People’s Choice finalist.  \nHis photographs have appeared in Outdoor Photography.com\, Bliss Magazine\, twice in Shutterbug.com “Photo of the Day\,” and inside the Willing Warriors Retreat at Bull Run (Reflecting Pond and Lincoln Memorial)\, and in the 2020 Burke and Herbert Calendar – for the month of August (Jefferson Memorial).  \nKirk\, a retired Naval officer and Federal employee lives in Alexandria\, Virginia with his wife\, Leslie.  Kirk has volunteered his time in NVPS; as a Members Forum Coordinator\, Members Gallery Coordinator\, and most recently Vice President for Programs. \nYou can see some of Kirk’s photo creations on his website www.kirkjohnsonphotography.squarespace.com.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Close to Home with Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:For the past two years\, because of the pandemic\, Willa has been photographing very close to home. This is an overview of the parks in the vicinity and almost all the pictures were taken in the last two years. The only exception that she can think of is the river otter at Huntley Meadows\, but they are unusual and Willa wanted to show what might be seen in these places. \nWilla’s first job after college was as an instructor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, She had a choice of several summer projects—filing\, cleaning animal cages or photographing wildlife in city parks for the NYC schools. She claimed to be able to do photography and came home with a camera. Bob taught her everything she needed to know over the following weekend and her work was published. Bob still claims to have taught her everything she knows.\n\nWilla has taken courses and workshops at Photoworks at Glen Echo\, and with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant in New Brunswick\, Canada\, and Santa Fe Workshop. She has also had extensive courses in Photoshop with Eliot Cohen. She has been a member of NVPS since 2004 and has learned  a great deal from the members and speakers. She is currently coordinator for the solo shows at Beanetics\, or will be when they re-open. \nHer work is on display at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and she has an image in the permanent collection of the Joseph Miller Center for Photographic Arts and has had images published in the Northern Virginia Review  and District Lines and has had solo shows at 1st Stage and Beanetics Coffee Rosters in Annandale and has been  a guest artist at Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda. \n

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: A Family Vacation in South Africa with Kevin Linde
DESCRIPTION:Twenty nine years after leaving South Africa\, Kevin and his family were able to enjoy visiting the country that he grew up in. Southern Africa offers so many photographic opportunities that range from beautiful landscapes to some of the most incredible wildlife on earth. \nKevin was born and raised in Johannesburg\, South Africa and moved to Canada in 1992 where he met his wife\, Debby. In 1998 they moved to Northern Virginia with their 2-year-old son\, Ryan. Their second son\, Jared\, was born in 1999 when they moved into their current home in Fairfax City. Kevin’s eldest son is now working and living in Austin\, TX and his youngest is a senior at the University of Alabama. Kevin currently works as a physical therapist in a private practice clinic\, which he founded in 2003. \nKevin became interested in photography about 16 years ago when he bought his first Canon DSLR. Prior to that he had a Pentax SLR\, which he owned for about 5 years prior to switching to digital. He learned the basics with this camera but was never that interested in photography. The change to digital provided instant feedback\, which allowed him to learn beyond the basics a lot faster. Kevin also enjoys post processing and continues to improve his skills with practice and online learning. He currently uses Canon equipment that he has accumulated over the years. His favorite subject to shoot is motor racing\, which is influenced by his interest in the sport. Not far behind is nature and animals which he was fortunate enough to enjoy while living in South Africa. He states that the great thing about photography is that you can take a photo of almost anything out there and make it something unique. He has been a member of NVPS for five years and has enjoyed meeting some wonderful people and great photographers. He enjoys sharing his photos but also enjoys seeing the great talent of others. Kevin loves the creativity of photography and looks forward to many more years of creating and sharing images.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Huntley Meadows Park - You Never Know What You Will See with David Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Photos taken of the fairly rare wildlife in the ever-changing Huntley Meadows Park. The atmosphere in the park changes frequently from deftly still too noisy and boisterous. This is David’s favorite place to photograph. If it were possible\, he would go there every day. \nThe photos below were mostly shot in 2021. \nPhotography is David Crooks’ passion and capturing the beauty of nature is the reward. David pursued his love of photography from his early days of chasing cardinals in his  neighborhood to visiting many local and far away parks\, reserves\, and other places where “wildlife” lives. \nHe was a member of the Loudoun Photo Club for about 5 years and then in 2015\, joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS). In 2016\, he volunteered to be the Webmaster of the NVPS website. In 2021\, David wrote “Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Guide Book.” In it\, he describes 25 locations the Meetup Group frequently visited over the past seven years. The book is available on Amazon.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Beauty Close to Home: Images from the Pandemic with Rena Schild
DESCRIPTION:When the pandemic shut down sports and events\, Rena turned to wildlife and nature photography.  She will share the local beauty she has captured during the pandemic.    \nRena has been interested in photography since she received a manual film camera as a college graduation gift\, but was sidelined by the practice of law until she had time to take some photography courses in the 1990’s.  She then began experimenting with many types of photography\, including family portraits\, events\, red carpet\, sports\, fine art and most recently bird photography.  Rena is currently happiest capturing athletes and birds in motion but thoroughly enjoys all photography\, especially outdoors.  She joined NVPS in early 2020.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Prints (Virtually): Welcome to Da ‘Hood with Debra Mastronardi
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Da ‘Hood – a collection of images from various Manhattan neighborhoods. \nStunning photos have always been Debra’s preferred form of art. She gets inspired by what is possible when looking through the lens. She started shooting with film and enjoyed capturing her life’s journey through the camera. Her camera never left her side for over two decades while raising her two children as she captured every life event; however she switched off manual and onto auto functions. There was no time to fiddle around with aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO. \nNow she is onto the next chapter of her life\, the “empty nester”. She renewed her passion for photography with help from a few friends and started creative shooting again. Her theme for this rebirth is “Life Off Of Auto”. It means more than moving the dial from Auto to Manual. It’s a transition from her children’s needs and schedules to a more spontaneous lifestyle; traveling with her husband while rediscovering her artistic creative side. \nDebra has been an NVPS member for just over 1 year. Some of her favorite styles of photography are cityscape\, landscape and street.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery – Digital: Honor Flight with Colena Turner
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Chuck Campbell\nIn 2014 and 2015\, Colena served as a volunteer to greet Honor Flight veterans arriving at Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport to visit their memorials in Washington\, D.C.. Her Member’s Gallery presentation displays many of the emotions and excitement experienced by the veterans and greeters. \nColena is especially drawn to photographing people. In high school\, she started her photography journey as the family photographer for get togethers\, with a camera gifted to her by a family friend. In 2003\, she purchased her first digital camera and has expanded her interests to nature\, macro\, abstract\, portrait\, event\, and street photography. \nAs a volunteer photographer\, Colena has shared her talent with the Phenomenal Women’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, Library of Congress National Book Festival\, Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, Reston Multi-Cultural Festival\, Honor Flight and Reston Association. For the past eleven years\, she has served in the Photography Ministry at her place of worship\, Heritage Fellowship Church. \nColena joined NVPS in February 2012 and has served as coordinator for Member’s Gallery and Ask Me A Question table. She currently serves on the NVPS Board as the Secretary/Historian. Colena continues to learn about the art of photography through workshops\, lectures\, tours and field trips. \n

DESCRIPTION:For November Ginger Werz-Petricka will be showing a variety of images from more recent travels to such far-flung and diverse locations as Washington State\, Maine\, Utah and Tennessee.  \nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009.  Over the years she has been involved with Education and Training\, and Members Gallery\, but is mostly known as co-chair of the Portfolio Project.  Her photography often reflects her interest in shape and texture\, with a love of dramatic light.  She also has a special interest in photographing the abandoned\, especially old buildings.
