SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) (Prints) A Talk on the Wild Side with Eva Lanyi
DESCRIPTION:Eva was about 11 years old when her parents gave her a camera\,  a Kodak Brownie Starmatic (which she still has).  With it\, she learned the basics of photography\, and then went on to use her father’s old steel Voigtlaender camera (she still has it\, too) for more formal photography training.   In 2013\, she started learning digital photography and processing\, an ongoing effort that has happily occupied much of her time since then.  NVPS has been integral to her photo education.  She has served as coordinator for Education and Training and\, currently\, for Members’ Gallery. \n\n\n\nNature photography\, including all kinds of wildlife\, is Eva’s favorite subject\, because she enjoys being outdoors as much as possible.  She also wants to contribute\, in an admittedly small way\, to preserving the natural world through her images.  So much of it is under threat. \n\n\n\nIn the last few years\, Eva has especially enjoyed photographing animals and birds in ways that demonstrate how much they communicate without words as we understand them. Anger\, fear\, love\, and fun\, for example\, are some of the sentiments they seem to express in their own ways.  Her prints will illustrate the eloquence of animal and bird language as she has experienced it.

DESCRIPTION:During his high school years\, David Kravitz had his own dark room and enjoyed exploring black and white film photography. Then life intervened. After college\, graduate school\, and a 40-year academic career\, he has returned to photography\, as he always intended\, though he has left film for digital. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAlthough David’s interests are wide-ranging\, his primary love is nature photography\, especially when combined with travel. This presentation is drawn from the ~25\,000 photos he took when on two back-to-back safaris with Pangolin Photo Safaris in May and June of 2024\, primarily in Botswana

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Digital\, In Person) - iPhone Photography:  The Things You See! with Greg Smith
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith his iPhones\, Greg Smith has often captured spur-of-the-moment events\, but also taken landscapes\, portraits\, and anything else that is picture worthy.  And quite a bit that is not.  Greg has found that often the iPhone’s camera settings are excellent as far as the image capture and has used native and Lightroom apps for editing his pictures.  With the iPhone Pro model\, he recently learned from NVPS members that he could even take RAW photos. \n\n\n\nGreg enjoys photographing whatever he happens upon\, primarily birds and landscapes\, and street photography when afforded the opportunity. As he and Gitta travel around the country in their RV trailer\, he has found that taking a quick iPhone picture from the same vantage point as the pictures they took with their Nikons\, Greg is able to capture the location and have it on a map\, making remembering where they took all the pictures much easier.  They have taken multiple trips to Denver\, the Grand Tetons\, Yellowstone\, and Acadia National Parks\, lots of State Parks\, and many stops in between and along the way.  Yes\, you can use the GPS function with your camera\, but Greg thinks the iPhone has made it even easier. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Smith became interested in photography from an early age when watching his father\, taking many pictures throughout their many family travels.  His dad always considered angles and framed the subjects when he could\, describing what and why as he did so.  Greg got his first SLR\, a Minolta\, prior to deploying to the Mediterranean with the Marines\, knowing there would be ample opportunities for pictures. However\, it was when attempting to take a picture of the Duomo in Florence\, Italy that he realized he needed a wide-angle zoom\, as he had to take the picture from three blocks away to get it all in!  Many years of photography have followed.  Greg shoots primarily with his Nikon D750\, but he has a great camera in his pocket all the time – his iPhone!

SUMMARY:Members Gallery (Prints) (In Person):  In Search of Big Cats with Don Little
DESCRIPTION:Black Leopard by Don Little\n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThere is something compelling about big cats. It is easy to be drawn in by their gaze. Their majestic appearance and nature are awe-inspiring\, and it is thrilling to see and try to capture moments of as they live their lives hunting\, playing and resting.  Don Little undertook a somewhat unpredictable journey last year to try and find and photograph one particular leopard\, a melanistic (black) leopard in Kenya.  Black leopards are quite rare and this one leopard is really the only one in Africa that you may have a chance to photograph as her home range overlaps with a camp in Laikipia and she is less shy than others. While Don only had a few brief encounters with her (in mostly low light…)\, it was an amazing experience. As with many wild animals\, you are often dealing with early morning or evening low light and trying to balance shutter speed\, aperture and ISO for the best quality photos. Every encounter with a big cat is thrilling\, being able to capture a few images is a plus. Don is looking forward to the next opportunity to see these amazing creatures in the wild again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon Little\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nDon began his photography journey in high school with an old twin reflex of his Dad’s. His photography grew largely from his travels exploring other counties and love of nature. Starting mostly with travel and landscapes and in recent years he has shifted more to wildlife. He joined NVPS a few years ago looking for kindred spirits and hoping to improve his photographic results beyond the “postcard” photos of the past. \n\n\n\nA goal has emerged in recent years to photograph many of the big cats in the wild. He has managed to get 5 of the top 7 big cats in recent years (tigers\, lions\, jaguars\, pumas and leopards). The sixth\, Cheetahs\, should be an easy fix with the right Africa trip. While the seventh\, snow leopards\, will take a bit more of an effort and luck… \n\n\n\nAdditional Photos by Don Little:\n\n\n\n\nKanha Tiger\n\n\n\nPantanal Jaguar\n\n\n\nPatagonia Puma

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery - (In-Person):Colena Turner - The Faces of Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Portrait By Benita Mayo\n\n\n\nColena’s passion for photography began in high school when a family friend gave her a film camera. She quickly became the go-to photographer for family gatherings. In 2003\, she upgraded to her first digital camera\, the Nikon Coolpix E4300. Over the years\, she used several Nikon digital SLRs\, including the D90 and D7100. Thirteen years later\, seeking a lighter camera for a cruise\, Colena purchased a Fujifilm X-E2 and became an immediate fan. Since then\, she’s added the Fujifilm X-T2\, X-T5\, and X-T30 to her collection and sold her Nikon gear. \n\n\n\nColena’s main passion lies in capturing people in various settings. Over time\, her interests have also grown to include abstract\, macro\, and nature photography. Her work has been featured in juried exhibitions such as the Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions and the Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibit. \n\n\n\nColena became a member of NVPS in February 2012 and has held various roles\, including coordinator for the Members’ Gallery\, the Ask Me A Question Table\, and Board Secretary/Historian. She credits the Club with fostering her ongoing growth and passion for the art and craft of photography. As a volunteer photographer\, Colena has contributed her skills to organizations such as the Professional Woman’s Alliance\, Help Portrait\, Loudoun Foto Trek\, Cornerstones\, the Library of Congress National Book Festival\, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Wreaths Across America\, and Honor Flight. In 2016\, the Reston Association recognized her with the Adult Volunteer Group of the Year Award. For the past twenty years\, she has also been actively involved in the Photography Ministry at Heritage Fellowship Church. \n\n\n\nFor the March Members’ Virtual Gallery\, Colena will showcase images captured during a Street Photography workshop in Cuba. One of the featured images\, titled “Reflection\,” was published in CubaSeen Issue 09\, a bilingual art zine that highlights works by both Cuban and American artists.

Or when we do take time to look back\, we think about the wonderful generals serving our nation\, but we forget the small things behind them\, such as the people working to make an honest living and buildings that look incredibly more incredible because they were built with no modern technology. This gallery represents only a small part of what life would have looked like\, not just the soldiers fighting\, but the buildings and architecture of the people working in shops…and the stories they bring to life. \n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nSarah is a middle school student who joined NVPS in 2022. She has competed in monthly competitions and participated in portfolio projects. Sarah has a love of history that she brings to her photography. SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In Person):  Judy’s Travels from Above the Arctic Circle to Mars and In-Between with Judy Graham
DESCRIPTION:Judy Graham\n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nJudy has been fortunate to travel to some amazing places in her pursuit of landscape photography\, and occasionally she transforms into a wildlife photographer. Her member’s gallery consists of images from Norway\, New England\, Isle of Skye in Scotland\, the Northwest\, Caddo Lake in Texas\, and the Badlands in South Dakota and Utah. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nJudy has lived in the Washington\, D.C. area most of her life.  She retired March 1\, 2018 after a long career in the field of human resources management for corporate America. Judy joined NVPS in January 2011 and has served in numerous positions\, including as President. Her goal for joining was to meet local photographers\, do more local photography\, and learn more about the art of photography. Her goals have been met 10 times over! \n\n\n\nJudy loves to travel and is primarily drawn to photographing dramatic landscapes\, often remote and difficult to get to. Initially her interest was in the desert southwest; however\, in more recent years she has expanded her travel to even include some very occasional wildlife photography. \n\n\n\nJudy currently shoots with a Canon R5 mirrorless system. \n\n\n\nAs for the future\, she has several trips planned\, including her 5th trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon\, Ireland\, Slovenia\, Italy and Hawaii.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery -  Print (In Person):  Nature and Theater with George Bradshaw
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo themes\, similar from a certain perspective — though some may call theater mere artifice\, it also serves as our meager attempt to grasp the nature of Nature. And as the photographer attempts to capture the natural beauty of a perched bird or a lone tree or a rippling river reflection\, he also attempts to capture the actor’s\, choreographer’s and scene designer’s representation of human nature.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio:\n\n\n\nGeorge Bradshaw\n\n\n\nGeorge Bradshaw inherited a photo gene from his father who freelanced in the ‘30s and ‘40s. But the gene did not express itself until 2015 when\, in retirement\, he bought a Canon 70D; and has been having a blast with photography ever since. George caught the bug to photograph theatrical performances during an OLLI class at George Mason University\, where he observed actors “getting into character” at a moment’s notice\, transitioning to unmistakably separate personae – George wanted to capture these otherwise fleeting moments of nature and art. \n\n\n\nIn 2018 George joined the NVPS and now volunteers on the editorial staff. He especially enjoys the NVPS Education & Training programs\, which\, along with all the other NVPS activities\, continually drive him forward to “see” his world and discover meaningful compositions.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person): Historic Cape May\, New Jersey with Janice Kane
DESCRIPTION:Cape May\, New Jersey is a quaint\, historic town located at the southern tip of New Jersey.  It was founded in 1609\, originallyas hunting grounds. It soon became a hub for the East Coast whaling industry. In 1761\, it became the first seashore resort in our country.  After a fire swept through the town in the late 1800’s\, new buildings were constructed in the “modern” Victorian Style.  It is those homes that are the center of this presentation. Preservation efforts have allowed Cape May to retain much of the architecture constructed during that time and that has resulted in its present-day charm. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice and her husband Jake have three daughters and three grandchildren.  Her daughters and grandchildren are her favorite subjects to photograph! \n\n\n\nHailing from a large Philly family\, Janice loved to take photos of their many family events.  She especially enjoyed taking family photos at the beach\, particularly a small town just North of Cape May.  When comparing her images to others she had seen\, Janice realized she needed to learn more about her camera\, photo composition\, and editing. Upon retirement\, she finally had more time to dedicate to improving her photography.  Her education began with taking an Introduction to Photography course at Northern Virginia Community College. She also tookseminars from local photography centers along with reviewing online tutorials.  All came up short in addressing Janice’s growing interest and desire to improve.  By searching the internet for photography clubs\, Janice learned of NVPS.  Janice became a member of NVPS in January of 2019. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, Janice signed up for the mentorship program.  Shesigned up for the portfolio project and attended as many field trips as possible.  Each provided much-needed guidance in the various aspects of photography. These activities also allowed her to interact with very knowledgeable members from whomshe continues to learn. \n\n\n\nShooting family functions and portraits continues to be her main focus.  As a beach lover\, she particularly enjoys taking surfers\, boaters\, and water fowl.

Known historically as the “Land of a Thousand Elephants\,” Laos is celebrated for its breathtaking natural landscapes\, warm-hearted people\, and flavorful cuisine. Life here unfolds with a calm simplicity\, where daily activities bring contentment and joy. The images in this presentation are chosen to convey the uniqueness of this “Simply Beautiful” country\, as seen through the photographer’s lens. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nDidem Lenz is a photography enthusiast whose journey began in 2005 at a photography workshop in Paris\, France. There\, she acquired basic photography skills and an introduction to stock photography while exploring Paris with fellow photographers. Inspired by the experience\, she purchased her first SLR camera and joined iStock as a contributing stock photographer. Since 2022\, Didem has been a member of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society\, continuing to hone her skills and share her photographic vision.

SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (In-Person): The Illinois Forest Preserves with Jim Sinsheimer
DESCRIPTION:During the post-World War II era of the late 20th century\, the northern suburbs of Chicago saw dramatic development of residential and commercial construction. To preserve portions of the natural forest which originally covered the land\, the Illinois Forest Preserves were created by the various counties in the area.  As I grew up there\, the forest preserves always impressed me with their state of natural\, undeveloped character. Through the seasons\, the forest areas changed their colors in the fall\, were covered in winter snow\, were inundated with spring rain and provided a lush canopy of green in the summer months. When my parents moved to a retirement community near the Des Plaines River in 2008\, I began to photograph this portion of the preserves during my periodic visits. Over ten years\, I captured images of the preserves and the river in all states of weather and seasons.     \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy introduction to photography was at around 7 years old when my dad converted a coal bin (we now had gas heat) to his darkroom.  However\, my interest really took off in college.  I’ve been a member of NVPS since 2018 having moved to Virginia from Southern California to be with our grandson and his family.  My past work has been published in Black and White Magazine\, LensWork and LensWork’s “Seeing in Sixes”. I’ve been a Canon shooter forever – I still have my FTB\, TL and F1 cameras as “museum” pieces.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery: (In-Person) (Digital) Wildlife\, Landscape\, Macro: My Photo Journey with Nancy Galib
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been taking photographs for most of my life\, but much more so in the past 7 or so years.  I started out with a Kodak Instamatic camera when I was a teenager\, and moved on to a rangefinder\, and then an SLR during the film-only era.  But digital photography and post-production tools were game changers.  It’s so much easier to experiment without the expenses of getting rolls of film developed.  My photography really took off after a photo trip to Alaska in the winter of 2017\, when I learned about shooting raw files and post-processing with Lightroom and Photoshop. I love the creativity that it gives me to convey what I feel. I’ve taken several photography trips since then — to places like Yellowstone\, the Southwest\, and most recently Botswana.  Each trip brings new skills\, new ways of seeing the world around me\, and new friends.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy photography doesn’t yet have a particular style\, and I am not drawn to one particular genre. I see photography as a journey of learning\, seeing\, and connecting with the world around me. My photos encompass wildlife\, landscape\, macro\, abstract\, and everything in between.  The wildlife photos will be primarily of the incredible birds and animals I saw along the Chobe River and in the Okavango Delta last fall\, but will also include birds and animals a little closer to home.  I was captivated by the colors and patterns in Alaska and U.S. national parks\, and my landscape photos from these places will include both beautiful mountain scenery as well as the abstract patterns I saw around me.  Flowers and insects will make up most of the macro images\, many of which were taken in my neighborhood or in local parks.  \n\n\n\nI look forward to continuing this journey!

SUMMARY:Members’ Gallery - (In-Person) (Print):  The Fun of Handmade Books with Tana Ebbole 
DESCRIPTION:We seldom think of making  our own photography books from scratch.  It is wonderful to be able to make a book with an online company and get back a lovely final product. \n\n\n\nBut leaning and making your own by hand is also fun and fascinating. It allows the photographer to have complete control over the entire process.  This opens many possibilities for various types and styles.  As well as having choices of the binding materials and designs.  Not to mention the paper used for the images to be displayed upon. \n\n\n\nI’m not an expert but have enjoyed taking classes and making several books.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGaetana (Tana) Ebbole\, an Arlingtonbased photographer\, seeks interesting flowers\, plants\, landscapes\, architecture and interior scenes to photograph.  She finds the solitude and peace of being outside in nature\, interesting architecture or working in her ad hoc studio help her to achieve total focus and a place of total enjoyment.  Her goal is to capture an image in such a way that others will be excited and touched as she was by what she saw in that moment. She finds the creative process of finding the scenes to capture through producing a printed image fascinating.  Her interests include landscapes\, flora\, rural and urban settings\, and scenes created in her ad hoc studio.   \n\n\n\nShe has been selected in juried national\, regional and local competitions and is a member of NVPS and the Art League’s Gallery 75. \n\n\n\nAll images are printed with archival ink on archival paper. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWebsite: Tanaebbolephotography.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram: TanaEbbole

DESCRIPTION:I Am \n\n\n\nby Lidia Slominski \n\n\n\nI am a mother\, a wife\, a daughter\, \n\n\n\nDevoted to my Family. \n\n\n\nI am a speck of dust in the immensity \n\n\n\nof \n\n\n\nthe Universe. \n\n\n\nI am an artist\, a writer\, \n\n\n\nan Army professional\, loyal to my country. \n\n\n\nI am a name on an endless list. \n\n\n\nI am All\, and Nothing. \n\n\n\nI Am. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs an artist\, I am self-taught. Art is my way to express my views of the world around me without using words. I always loved taking photos; I feel inspired every time I look around\, whether alone\, with my family or at work\, by anything and everything.  I create stories around the photographs that I take. I look at them as life scenes and use them as inspiration for my paintings. When I create photograph series\, I sometimes tell the story in a poem. My first painting was inspired by my professional mentor calling me a “tall poppy “and by childhood memories. Creating my first painting inspired a series of photographs that feature poppies.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs far as showcasing my work\, I usually give my photographs or paintings as gifts to friends\, as a memento of a memory we share. However\, I have participated in a few events where I sold my art or raised funding for events. Most recently\, I was the featured artist of May 2023 at the Darbytown Art Studio in Fredericksburg. I also earned awards and various photography group recognitions\, such as Top Image of the Month with the NOVA Macro/Nature Photography VA – DC – MD\, January 2021 (run by Lori Lankford)\, Second Place\, two Honorable Mentions and a Merit Award at the 2022 Annual Fredericksburg Photography Show\, and most recently Second Place at the NVPS intermediate Color Monthly Competition of April 2024 (I joined NVPS in March 2024). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Window \n\n\n\nBy Lidia Slominski \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA dark gloomy room\,  \n\n\n\nPaint peeling off the walls. \n\n\n\nOpen doors\, of closets and cabinets. \n\n\n\nEmpty now…Bearing memories of things\, \n\n\n\nAnd the people that the things belonged to. \n\n\n\nA dirty\, worn-out rug across the floor\, \n\n\n\nWith stains of times past\, and a musty odor. \n\n\n\nAn empty\, abandoned room. \n\n\n\nIn an empty\, abandoned building. \n\n\n\nCold and dark. A sanitarium\, more precisely. \n\n\n\nSuddenly\, I feel the burden. \n\n\n\nA burden of many\, that now becomes mine… \n\n\n\nOverwhelming and distant at the same time. \n\n\n\nAnd then\, I see the light seeping through. \n\n\n\nComing through a window\, \n\n\n\nThat seems blocked by a brick wall. \n\n\n\nAs I walk past the door\, the light becomes brighter.  \n\n\n\nThe brick wall is fading\, and my soul feels lighter. \n\n\n\nA feeling of hope has taken over. \n\n\n\nAnd I can go on…

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person) – Prints: Dance and Architecture with Catherine Wang
DESCRIPTION:Dance and Architecture are two distinct yet profoundly interconnected subjects in photography\, each offering unique challenges and opportunities for creative expression. Capturing dance in photography involves freezing moments of fluid motion\, translating the grace\, power\, and emotion of the dance into a still image\, while Architectural photography focuses on capturing the design\, form\, and aesthetic of buildings and structures. It emphasizes lines\, shapes\, patterns\, and the relationship between different elements of the design. Can we find something in common between these two? Yes\, it’s “ART”\,  Both dance and architecture photography require a strong artistic vision. Photographers need to see beyond the obvious and capture unique perspectives that showcase their subjects in new and artistic ways. In my “Dance and Architecture” presentation\, I hope the audience will find the unique connection hidden behind the photos.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Wang is an International award-winning photographer based in DMV area (DC\, Maryland\, Virginia)\, specializing in still life\, architecture\, portrait and dance photography. Her work also exhibited in many countries\, such as UK\, Switzerland\, Japan etc.   \n\n\n\nWith 8 years of experience\, Catherine has developed a unique style that blends contemporary aesthetics with classic techniques.   \n\n\n\nCatherine’s journey into photography began in 2016\, when she got her first Nikon DSLR camera. Her skills took off in 2020 when COVID-19 started\, allowing her to work remotely and giving her more time to dive into photography. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines\, including Photo Vogue\, 1x.com etc.  \n\n\n\nWhen she’s not behind the camera\, Catherine enjoys reading\, teaching photography workshops and mentoring aspiring photographers. DESCRIPTION:Program Description \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirk Johnson’s presentation is titled People Watching and he will exhibit some of his favorite photographs of people he has met locally and abroad. Tonight’s presentation was influenced by James Prochnik’s recent NVPS program titled Picturing Strangers: Facing Fears\, Finding Connections\, & Having Fun. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nKirk became interested in digital photography in 2012 when he joined NVPS. He has been recognized internationally\, nationally\, and locally with a variety of photographic awards including numerous photo sun creations on CBS Sunday Morning (2021 thru 2023)\, Annual Photography Award (APA)— Honorable Mention\, International Fine Arts Photography Award (FAPA)—Nominee Award\, Great American Country (GAC)—Hunt for Americana Photo Contest\, and NVPS monthly and end–of–year competition awards. Additionally\, his photographs have been juried into the 2020 Mid–Atlantic Photo Visions competition and a People’s Choice finalist. \n\n\n\nFinally\, his photographs (photo sun mandala creations) have appeared on CBS Sunday Morning (2021 thru 2023)\, in Outdoor Photography.com\, Bliss Magazine\, twice in Shutterbug.com “Photo of the Day\,” in the Willing Warriors Retreat at Bull Run\, and in the 2020 Burke and Herbert calendar. \n\n\n\nKirk has volunteered his time in NVPS as a Member’s Forum Coordinator\, Member’s Gallery Coordinator\, Vice President for Programs\, and most recently as President. DESCRIPTION:We have a special event for everyone on May 28\, the last meeting of the year. Instead of one member displaying their prints (usually of a single theme and with uniform mats and/or frames)\, we invite all members to bring in up to four prints or photo projects prepared in any manner you’d like. We hope to see examples of all sizes\, decorative frame styles\, and prints on alternative materials like metal\, canvas\, acrylic\, and wood\, as well as work done for competition presentations. We’d also like to see examples of photo books and special projects like calendars\, photo cards\, mouse pads\, scarves\, and other gifts. \n\n\n\nInstructions:   Bring your printed items to the Firehouse before the meeting starts and lay them out on the tables in the back of the room at the direction of the helpers. They will assist in marking off your space and ask you to put your name on a Name Tent that will connect you to your displayed items. SUMMARY:Member's Gallery (Print) (In Person) - "Images:  Real and Imagined" with Gary Perlow
DESCRIPTION:Gary\, an ex-New Yorker\, has been living in the northern Virginia area for nearly 30 years.  He was a home builder who especially enjoyed designing kitchens\, bathrooms\, and choosing paint colors.  He is presently involved in commercial real estate investment. \n\n\n\nHe started taking photographs of his daughter’s sporting events about 12 years ago\, and discovered that post-processing the images provided a welcome creative outlet.  Then and today\, he has never stopped being an ardent student of Photoshop.  Its potential never ceases to amaze.  \n\n\n\nHe received the Best in Show award at Nature Visions in 2019\, Best in Show (Photo Art Division) at Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions in 2022\, and the Ollie Fife Award in 2022 from the NVPS.  His photographs of Civil War battlefields have appeared in Hallowed Ground\, a publication of the American Battlefield Trust. \n\n\n\nHis other hobby is powerlifting where he has competed nationally – but due to aches and pains\, no longer competes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Person at the Dunn Loring Firehouse

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In-Person) – Digital:  My Favorite Nature Photos with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:Program Description \n\n\n\nMike Whalen\n\n\n\nMike enjoys a wide variety of photography subjects. In this video presentation he will show some of his favorite nature photos\, past and present. These still images will be shown in four groups: \n\n\n\n\nFlowers\, Trees\, Leaves and Bugs\n\n\n\nBirds\, Mammals\, Amphibians and Fish\n\n\n\nWater and Landscapes\n\n\n\nClose-Ups and Abstracts\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSome examples are shown below. The presentation will be a short video slide-show (approx. 10 minutes) with background music. The video will also be available to members via the website (within a few days after the date presented). \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nMike became interested in digital photography in 2006. His first camera was an entry level Canon DSLR. \n\n\n\nHe joined NVPS in 2009 and held board positions from 2010 to the present\, including president in 2013. \n\n\n\nHe also volunteers weekly as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter\, and occasionally\, as an event photographer for charitable organizations such as the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \n\n\n\nJoining NVPS was a significant learning opportunity due to the many club activities and inspiration from talented members. \n\n\n\nHis photographic interests include nature\, landscapes\, macro\, people\, travel\, and abstract photography. SUMMARY:Members Gallery (Print) (In Person): Yard Birds with Stan Bysshe
DESCRIPTION:Stan has been a member of NVPS since 2010-2011. He has served on multiple Board positions and is a past President. For the last ten years he has helped with photo workshops in Washington State\, New Mexico\, Alaska and Montana. For the past few years he has been working for the Smithsonian North American Songbird Project. \n\n\n\nSAFE\, Saving Animals from Extinction and the North American Songbird Project is an undertaking of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) of which the National Zoo is a partner. They are always looking for images and have several assigned bird photographers across the country. Basically Stan helps with images of Atlantic Coast songbirds. \n\n\n\nThe Members Gallery prints are part of the collection used for the SAFE project and were all taken over the past three years\, in his backyard.

DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\n\n\nJennifer Nguyen\n\n\n\nJennifer Nguyen learned about the Basic Photography and Developing photos using the chemical process during her last year at the Architecture University in Vietnam. She realized that photography was the passion of her life and her hobby\, but she had to stop pursuing this passion when she moved to the United States. She was so busy building her career by working full time and studying part time. After graduating\, she worked full time as an engineer at the Department of Defense and took care of her special needs son. She really didn’t have free time for herself at all. \n\n\n\nAfter retiring\, she came back to her passion and hobby in 2019.  Wow\, learning digital photography was easier\, and more interesting with Photoshop and Lightroom processing. Her photographic interests include landscapes\, nature\, macro\, studio portrait\, travel and ICM photography. She joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) in 2019 and her skills have improved since then\, because NVPS has many club activities. She received several awards within the NVPS’s monthly competitions with her passion and her inspiration from all other talented members.” \n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany photographers adore the Autumn atmosphere with the cool air and the yellow and red leaves\, so Jennifer Nguyen went to Southern Maine in November 2022 to photograph the Autumn view. She visited Acadia National Park\, the area around it and Portland.

DESCRIPTION:These Are a Few of our Favorite Things…. \n\n\n\nArt and Deb’s interest in photography blossomed over 20 years ago during a family trip to Australia. Their passion for both travel and photography continued to grow. Once retired from their careers\, they are living their dream to travel and capture their experiences through photography.  \n\n\n\nTheir travels have taken them through North\, Central and South America\, Europe\, and Asia.  Domestic road trips include Utah & Arizona\, Grand Canyon\, Route 66\, Louisiana\, West Virginia\, Maine (complete with puffins)\, the Oregon Coast and Covered Bridges from Maryland to the Finger Lakes of New York.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir interests span many types of photography including landscape\, street\, night sky\, and wildlife. Deb enjoys merging creativity with her photos. Using photoshop\, she blends watercolor painting and brush effects to create photo artistic pieces; and in a process she calls “Photo Alchemy”\, combines differing images to create new artistic compositions.  Art enjoys working in post processing to create realistic composites and impart a range of dramatic looks to his photos.  \n\n\n\nIn this print Members Gallery\, Deb and Art have selected some of their favorite photos to share with you. These are the photos that as soon as they saw them pop up on their computer screens from their cameras they thought: “We have to print that!”  \n\n\n\nTheir photos come from their road trips and travel. Each has a special memory that goes along with the image. See if you can guess why each photo became one of their favorites!

DESCRIPTION:The Gathering\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther’s Member’s Gallery will include images taken in February 2022 in Dubai\, UAE―a city of amazing architecture\, ports\, beaches\, and a world hub of finance and trade. Dubai hosted the World Expo from fall 2021 to spring 2022 (planned for 2020 but delayed by the pandemic). It was a jaw-dropping event with innovative pavilions\, programs and people\, and a smorgasbord of photographic opportunities. \n\n\n\nJudy Guenther\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nJudy Guenther joined NVPS in the fall of 2015. She is an avid travel photographer who loves the process of photography from the capture to post-processing. She enjoys a variety of photographic subjects including landscapes\, abstracts\, colors\, nature\, wildlife\, and people\, but she is particularly drawn to architectural abstracts. \n\n\n\nJudy is currently the editor of the NVPS newsletter FotoFax\, and a member of the Art League in Alexandria\, the Maryland Federation of Art\, and the F11 Women’s Photography Collective. DESCRIPTION:BIO: \n\n\n\nGinger has been a member of NVPS since 2009 when she started exploring ways to be creative and engaged after retirement. She has been primarily involved with the Portfolio Project and is currently the club president for 2023-2024. \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nGinger has been collecting the art of other people for her entire adult life. But that doesn’t mean she has ignored her own photographic art.  \n\n\n\nSometimes an image just calls out to her\, but very often the images that find a home on her walls are those she has entered into competition or those from shows. DESCRIPTION:Description  \n\n\n\nThien and Kimxuan had traveled to Tanzania twice within a year to photograph animals\, birds\, and everything in between. Tanzania is a Country in East Africa. The people of Tanzania were so nice and courteous. The National Parks had many different types of animals and birds. Also\, the landscapes were peaceful and beautiful.   \n\n\n\n   Bio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKimxuan Nguyen studied photography in college when the photography world was still using film and darkroom to process photos. Fast-forward\, Kimxuan joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) in 2019. She received several Awards including the Ollie Fite Award.  \n\n\n\nThien Nguyen started photography during the pandemic a few years back. He enjoys reading about photography during his spare time. He joined the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS) in 2020. He received several Awards including the Ollie Fite Award.  \n\n\n\nThien and Kimxuan like to travel within the United States as well as the world to capture mostly landscaping and wildlife.

SUMMARY:Member’s Gallery (In Person) - Orchids on Canvas with KieuLan Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Kieulan Nguyen\n\n\n\nKieulan considers herself an avid photographer.  She loves to photograph macro\, landscape\, travel\, street and currently she is working on Light and Shadow project.   \n\n\n\nIn 2019 during Covid\, she took a workshop from Rosie Lalonde to learn how to take pictures of flowers and transform them into paintings using mixer brushes in Photoshop.  Since that day\, she has immersed herself learning more and more about this technique and lately  besides orchids she also paints dogs\, cats\, and birds.   \n\n\n\nFor the last 4 years\, Kieulan has been building up her portfolio of painting orchids.   These paintings are from pictures that were taken from many trips to Longwood Gardens\, US Botanical\, and local gardens near her house.  These images that she presents today are a small body of her work as she continues to look for more exotic orchids to add to her collection. \n\n\n\nPainting is just like mediation.   Seeing an ordinary picture and transforming it into a painting is something that Kieulan loves to do\, and she feels so rewarded after finishing one painting.  A sense of fulfillment that is.

DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThu Huyhn recently had a western road trip with her friends for seven days.  Her trip began in the state of California. She went through four other states including Nevada\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, and Utah. The group then headed back to California. The slideshow includes pictures she took during this entire trip. There was about a 30-minute rest at the hotels every day on this busy schedule. It really was an unforgettable road trip! \n\n\n\nThu Huyhn\n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nThu started learning photography in 2019. She simply wanted to improve her photography skills for her real estate business\, but it was then that she knew she had a passion for photography and became deeply immersed in it. SUMMARY:Member's Gallery:  (In-Person) Prints - People of Pleiku\, Vietnam with Wayne Guenther
DESCRIPTION:Mother and Baby\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nI was an Army Captain stationed near Pleiku\, Vietnam from September 1970 to September 1971. My budding enthusiasm for photography was muted while there because of long workdays and the “Off Limits” designation of the city.  I was able to do some photography during my official business travels but those images were captured mostly from the air and from vehicles transiting busy city streets. Pleiku’s status changed to “On Limits” in the spring of 1972\, and coupled with my maintenance battalion’s reduced workload related to US troop withdrawals\, I was able to spend a few hours in the city on scattered weekends until I departed for home.  I usually parked my jeep on the edge of the marketplace and wandered around\, occasionally with another soldier/photography enthusiast.  I was received with curiosity and frequent smiles from the people I encountered and was not hindered from raising the camera and pressing the shutter release. \n\n\n\nAlthough all my Vietnam photos lay dormant for decades\, I always intended to do a book or a show around the “People of Pleiku.”  An exhibit opportunity arose in 2013 at the Northern Virginia Community College Verizon Gallery and I matted and framed 30 images for the show. Now another decade has passed and I’m glad to have this opportunity to display them again for NVPS.  I hope you find them interesting. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nWayne Guenther\n\n\n\nWayne Guenther began his photography avocation in the late 1960s but became increasingly involved with Art Photography in the mid-1990s. Membership in Gallery West and the Art League (both in Alexandria\, VA) nudged him to regularly create new work and develop a style.  In 2009 he was a charter member and President of the Workhouse Photography Group (Lorton\, VA) and remained active there until 2012 when he fully retired. Wayne joined NVPS in 2015.  He has been accepted in many regional juried art competitions/shows over the past 25 years\, and placed in several NVPS monthly competitions.   \n\n\n\nIn Vietnam Wayne shot with Nikon bodies and three lenses; 35mm\, 50mm\, and 135mm.  He processed most of his black and white film at the nearby Air Force Base photo lab\, and sent off the transparency film to the States.  He saw the results on returning home.  Time was not friendly to Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides\, and the storage conditions were hardly archival.
