SUMMARY:Field Trip: Enid A. Haupt Garden / Smithsonian Castle
DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s Enid A. Haupt Garden sits at the center of the city block framed between 12th St. and 7th St. SW and Independence Ave and Jefferson Dr SW.  Included in this block are a number of iconic and unique structures including (but not limited to) the Smithsonian Castle\, Arts and Industries Building\, and Hirshhorn Museum.  Between these structures\, the Smithsonian maintains a variety of gardens and outdoor vignettes including the Haupt Garden\, Moongate Garden\, Mary Livingston Ripley Garden\, and more.  This spot is a gem on The Mall of Washington DC and ideal for our purposes allowing us to spread out. \nYour field trip coordinators have chosen a date in mid-April in hopes of avoiding any potential leftover crowds caused by the cherry blossoms.  At the time of this writing\, all museums are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Also in the news are the renovations planned for the Haupt Garden and immediate area.  However\, we have received word\, the construction planned for 2021 will now begin in 2023. \nWhat: \nIn this field trip\, we’ll tip toe through the tulips while gawking at the architecture.  The Smithsonian Castle and the Enid A. Haupt Garden will be the epicenter of this field trip\, but you are welcome and encouraged to explore other vignettes including the Arts and Industries Building\, the Moongate Garden\, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, and all the spaces in between.  Each destination offers engaging subject matter. \nPlease note\, tripods are not allowed on Smithsonian grounds (https://gardens.si.edu/plan-your-visit/#photo).  I have been approached by security while carrying a tripod to question my intentions and remind me of their policy.  Most in security are nice about it\, but I recommend for your comfort\, leave the tripod home or in the car trunk. \nSunrise is expected at 6:39 a.m. \nEquipment: \nMost any lens between 24-200 will satisfy your needs.  Consider a macro lens as well if you have steady hands and or electronic stabilization. \n** Remember\, tripods are not allowed on Smithsonian grounds ** \nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 10\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a. m \nRain date on Sunday\, April 11\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet outside the gate to the Haupt Garden bordering Independence Ave. at 7am for a brief meet and greet. \nOne of my favorite free places to park is outside the US Botanical Garden on Maryland Ave.  However\, you can pay for street parking at the electronic kiosks\, available on Jefferson Dr. in-front of the Smithsonian Castle.  There is typically a three hour maximum. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz \nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \nField Trip Coordinators contact information can be found at Board Contacts. \n* Photographs of the castle and gardens courtesy of NVPS member Steven Glintz.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Great Falls\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in applying what we learned from September’s Education and Training session with Lynn Cates as we explore Great Falls\, Maryland. \nWhat:  \nThe C&O tow path between the visitor center and the path to the Great Falls overlooks offer opportunities to capture wildlife\, color\, reflections\, and more.  Landscapes\, details\, abstracts\, and more opportunities are available for what we hope will be peak Fall season subjects. \nWe’ll meet and greet outside the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center restrooms.  From there\, we’ll head South towards Washington DC along the C&O tow path.  There are several trails that branch off the tow path that you’re welcome to explore as you practice your social distancing.  About 0.3 miles from the Visitor’s center is the Olmstead Island Trail that bridges the tow path to the primary overlook.  Beware the bridge will bob up and down as pedestrians cross.  It’s also narrow so take care if you decide put a tripod down on the bridge.  Anything you drop is instantly donated to the rocks and rapids below.  Additional photographic opportunities are also available within another mile down the path towards Washington.  Feel free to explore.  Please anticipate hiking on a compact gravelly path for about 1 mile or more.  Bring comfortable hiking shoes and anticipate the cooler weather. \nFor those unfamiliar with the area\, please be advised that sections of the Billy Goat Trail should not be traversed (especially with expensive camera gear) unless you’re willing to accept the risks including steep drops and large rock scrambling.  Parts of that trail can be considered strenuous and people frequently injure themselves.  Also\, as of July 3\, 2020\, this trail has also been designated one way going downstream towards Washington. \nTripods are widely accepted.  Please be mindful when staking your spot and maintain your social distancing. \nSunrise is anticipated at 6:50 a.m. \nHere are some equipment recommendations: \n\nA sturdy tripod\nAny and all glass will be useful\, however if you want to pick out details of the falls\, consider a 200mm or longer lens with optional teleconverter. The estimated distance from the overlook to the middle of the falls is about 40 yards.\nFilters optional\, though a polarizer to eliminate glare may come in handy since you’ll be shooting perpendicular to the sunrise.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\,  November 14\, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.\nRain date on Sunday\, November 15\, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll assemble briefly at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center / restrooms adjacent to the parking lot.  If you don’t see us there\, head South towards Washington DC until you reach the overlook trailhead.  You’re certain to run into other members. \n  \nEntrance fees have increased in January 2020.  The current rate per car is $20.  If you walk into the park\, the cost is $10.  The fee buys you a permit allowing you to reenter both sides of Great Falls (Maryland and Virginia side) for up to seven days from the date issued.  America the Beautiful and Great Falls Annual pass holders gain free entry.  If you’re on the fence about getting an America the Beautiful pass\, know that the cost of the Great Falls Annual pass can be put towards upgrading to the America the Beautiful pass. \nCarpools are recommended to save you cash provided you can travel with others in your extended “bubble”.  Please remember to bring a mask and anticipate wearing the mask while around others.  Please also be patient and remain the recommended six feet away from other visitors. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \n* Photographs courtesy Stan Bysshe.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS gallery. Great Falls Gallery \n

Parking is available underground for $9\, or for free on Wisconsin Ave. if it’s your lucky day.  There are mass transportation options listed on the Cathedral’s website https://cathedral.org/visit-us/directions-parking/.   \nThe morning will start by exploring the South side arcade.  This side of the Cathedral really shines in the morning due to the low angle of the sun.  Participants should slowly make their way down to the high altar to check out the light splashing on the organ pipes\, the altar\, and the many decorations above. \nAt 12 noon\, there is a 30-minute service.  We will have to disperse at this time. No photography is allowed near the high altar\, the naive\, or either arcade (basically anywhere inside on the ground floor).  Steve recommends going downstairs to explore the crypt or going up the elevator in the Northwest tower which connects to the Southwest tower.   \nWhen the service concludes\, the group will return to the ground floor for an encore.  This time to explore the naive and the North arcade. The sun will be at its highest point in the sky and the light cast through the stained-glass windows above creates more unique photographic opportunities.   \nIf participants feel they’ve been overloaded with architecture and color\, there are opportunities to flex your creative muscles.  Multiple exposures of some of the glass windows allow you to combine interesting subjects in unusual settings. Or try dragging the shutter.  This place is literally a candy store for the photographer to quote Steve. \nThe group will take a break around 2 p.m. to meet up next door (immediately south next to the Bishop’s Garden) at the Cathedral coffee shop. They offer coffee\, hot chocolate\, pastries\, and other lite snacks.   \nWhen 3:30 p.m. rolls around\, the group will return outdoors in hopes of a sunset which will turn the outside of the Cathedral that warm golden glow. \nIt’s going to be a full day of photographic wonders\, so stay as long as you like. \nWe hope you can join us! Please email us at fieldtrips-2019@nvps.org if you plan to. \nJudy Graham and Tana Ebbole \nField Trip Coordinators 2019-2020 \nFieldtrips-2019@nvps.org  \nNote: If you cannot join NVPS for the field trip\, you can visit the Cathedral at any time.  Each visit yields different results. For best results (or at similar to the images created by Steve) he recommends visiting the Cathedral within 6-8 weeks of the winter solstice (December 21\, 2019).  The reason for that is because the sun is especially low on the horizon which helps the inside glow in wonderful colors. \nIf you visit on a Sunday\, you can get free parking and free entry\, however\, Sunday’s are usually busy\, and you have to wait until after 12 noon for services to end.

DESCRIPTION:NVPS November Field Trip to Huntley Meadows Park \nWhen: \nFriday\, November 8\, 2019 (Rain Date\, Saturday) \nNOTE: THE SATURDAY FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED! \nSaturday\, November 9\, 2019 (No rain Date) \nWe are going there both days.  Please attend the date that works for you. \nField Trip Leader: \nStan Bysshe \n \nThis time of year it is hard to know what to expect at Huntley Meadows. But since all will be traveling by car there is no reason not to be prepared for all photo subjects. \nThere is a fair amount of walking and it can be wet so hiking shoes are helpful. \nTripod and a good assortment of lenses for birds\, landscapes and macro can all be used. \nDepending on the season there may still be quite a bit of fall color and migratory birds may still be hanging out. Early morning is the best time to see deer\, beaver\, and the elusive fox and otter. \nSunrise will be at approximately 7:00 a.m. so Stan will be in the parking lot by 6:30 ready to head out. Stragglers can meet us on the boardwalk. \nDepending on the light and subject manner we can shoot until late morning and plan for brunch at iHop on Route 1.  \nHuntley Meadows:   https://www.google.com/maps/place/3701+Lockheed+Blvd\,+Alexandria\,+VA+22306/@38.76\,-77.0976212\,16.44z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89b7adf703dc2dc5:0xc0896358d9baec18!8m2!3d38.7601672!4d-77.0955692 \niHop:   \n7694 Richmond Highway \nAlexandria\, Va. 22306 \n

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Waterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster's House
DESCRIPTION:October Field Trip \nWaterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster’s House \nWaterford\, located in northern Loudoun County\, is one of the most photogenic locations in our region. Founded in the early 1700s\, it is today a National Historic Landmark District\, with buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These include the Waterford Mill (mid-1700s)\, the “Arch House Row” (also mid 18th Century)\, and the Presbyterian church (1882). Waterford\, with a largely Quaker and abolitionist population\, remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War\, but was the scene of a battle. \nMany of us know Waterford from its annual fair in early October. (It will be October 4\, 5\, 6 and this year.) Roger Lancaster knows it as home and has offered to share some of his favorite photographic locations with us during a NVPS Field Trip on Saturday\, October 19. An added bonus is Roger will have the keys to the mill\, the old school and other buildings\, plus he has made arrangements to visit some of the beautiful gardens. \nYou can get a preview of Waterford’s sites and articles on its history at https://www.waterfordhistory.org/ \nAfter touring the Waterford area\, Roger will host a potluck at his house. To keep things moderately organized\, please bring whatever you’d like to drink as well as a dish to share: \nLast name beginning with A – J Salad or hamburger fixings (ketchup\, relish…) \nLast name beginning with K –R Side dishes (potato salad…) \nLast name beginning with S – Z Dessert \nWe will meet at Roger’s house at 9:00 a.m. on October 19. (Maps and directions will be provided separately.) \nField Trip Coordinators for 2019-2020 are Tana Ebbole and Judy Graham\, fieldtrips-2019@nvps.org

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Old Town Alexandria - Street Photography
DESCRIPTION:September 2019 Field Trip \nOld Town Street Photography \nWithin eyesight of Washington\, D.C.\, on the Potomac River Old Town Alexandria\, VA is nationally recognized for its rich history\, beautifully preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture\, cobble stone streets\, and for their delightful festivals\, parades\, shops\, restaurants and great people watching. \nKicking off the 2019 – 2020 club year\, two of NVPS’ best street photographers\, Willa and Bob Friedman\, will lead a field trip through Old Town Alexandria.  They will provide an opportunity for us to learn and/or refine the art of street photography\, including how to capture in” stealth mode” those special moments of people doing their thing. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 21st at \nTime: 9:00a.m. \nWhere: 301 King Street\, Alexandria\, VA \nWe will meet at the entrance to the Market Square Parking Garage (Republic Parking) at 110-198 N. Fairfax Street near the intersection of King Street and N. Fairfax.  There is free parking until noon according to their website. Note – the last time Bob was there the sign said 1:00PM. \nWe will begin by wandering through the market seeking interesting scenes and people.  Once we’ve had our fill and/or the market gets too crowded\, we will head toward the river taking photos along the way which includes some interesting architecture.  Then along the river behind the Torpedo Factory is a park and veranda with great opportunities to catch people “doing their thing” and interacting with a new art installation.   \nAs to photo gear a medium zoom covers it all. Wide angle and normal lens\, 50-75mm should be adequate. A long lens is not recommended. And per Willa\, no tripods! \nField Trip Coordinators for 2019-2020 are Judy Graham and Tana Ebbole\, fieldtrips-2019@nvps.org

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Night Photography at Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:On August 14 Mike Whalen will lead a late-afternoon/evening field-trip to the Montgomery County Fair in Gaithersburg\, MD. This is an excellent opportunity to photograph colorful lights and carnival rides\, award-winning farm animals\, people having fun\, and so much more. \nA highlight will be to capture night photos of the many moving light-trails produced by the rides. Plan to stay well after dark. A tripod  is a must  for slow-shutter captures\, and a wide-standard focal length zoom lens would be most useful. \nWe will plan to meet inside the fairgrounds around 4:00 PM\, likely near the poultry house on Hickory Ave.  We will also plan to meet at 6:30 near the intersection of Red Oak St. and Maple Ave. to grab a quick bite at one of the nearby eateries. After that\, we will migrate to the carnival area to photograph lights\, rides\, concessions\, etc. (See map below.) \nIf your interested\, please contact Mike via email (specialboardmember1 “at” nvps.org) and include your cell phone number in case he needs to contact you. \nThe admission cost is $15 and parking is $10. There is plenty of parking\, but car-pooling is always a good option. \nThe fair’s website: http://mcagfair.com/general-information/ \nFairground Map: http://mcagfair.com/general-information/fairground-map/ \nA few photos taken at last year’s fair: https://www.facebook.com/mike.whalen.16718/media_set?set=a.929106210616518&type=3 \nFairground Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Montgomery+County+Agricultural+Fair/@39.1466123\,-77.2156419\,14z/data=!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x89b62d270c7697d7:0x9de7eefbd5feab22!2sMontgomery+County+Agricultural+Fair!8m2!3d39.1455449!4d-77.2086971!3m4!1s0x89b62d270c7697d7:0x9de7eefbd5feab22!8m2!3d39.1455449!4d-77.2086971

SUMMARY:Field-Trip: Truck Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:The “Truck Graveyard” is the destination for our March 23rd Field Trip. The Graveyard is situated on the property of the PL Duncan Company located at 2 Duncan Store Road in Columbia Virginia. Travel time from the Beltway is approximately 2 3⁄4 hours primarily on Routes 66\, 29 and 15 South. About 60 vintage (mid 20th century) vehicles in various states of decay are scattered among the several acres of wooded area\, open fields and under the roof of some quite dilapidated storage buildings. As morning light is preferable we should plan to start our shoot at 9:00 AM. As Columbia\, VA is quite a schlep from N. VA\, we encourage your early sign up to facilitate forming carpools. \nOne further note: there are no facilities within 20-minutes of the truck graveyard. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center\, Air & Space Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the destination for the NVPS February Field Trip\, scheduled  to meet at 10:00 AM on Saturday\, February 16th.    The museum is located in Chantilly near the Dulles Airport\, accessible from Route 28.  The Center is the companion facility to the National Air and Space Museum at the National Mall. \nThere are hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft on display including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird a super-sonic spy craft\, the Boeing B-29 Super Fortress Enola Gay that delivered the decisive atomic attack on Japan that ended the WWII in the Pacific theater\, the Space Shuttle Discovery\, among many others.  Other current exhibits include:  Aerobatic Flight\, Application Satellites\, Business Aviation\, Clouds in a Bag\, and Cold War Aviation. \nThe Center is located at 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway\, Chantilly.  As tripods are not permitted inside of the Center\, photography can be challenging.  None-the-less\, the myriad artifacts\, displays and architecture provide rich opportunities for creative captures. \nThe museum opens at 10:00 AM.  There is no fee for admission\, however there is a $15.00 fee to park your car.  Accordingly we encourage and will facilitate forming carpools.  Refreshments to follow photography will likely be had at one of the several excellent Breweries in nearby Sterling or Ashburn (TBD).

SUMMARY:December 1\, 2018 - Field Trip: "Scottish Festival" - Alexandria\, VA
DESCRIPTION:Our December field trip will be December 1 in Old Town Alexandria. We’ll start with the Scottish Walk\, a holiday parade that’s an Alexandria tradition\, with the tartans of Scottish Clans\, the  stirring sound of Scottish bagpipes and drums\, Scottish dancers\, reenactment groups\, Scottie dogs\, dignitaries\, classic cars\, Santa Claus\, and much more.” The parade begins at St. Asaph and Wolfe Streets in Old Town (photo opportunities abound as the groups get organized) and ends at Market Square. In addition to the parade itself\, this is an excellent opportunity for street  photography\, especially for those who are somewhat intimidated by asking people if we can photograph them. The parade starts at 11:00am though the staging area will be active well before that.  \nAfter the parade\, we’ll meet at Mia’s Italian Kitchen at the base of King Street at 1:00pm; we have a reservation upstairs. \nThe day will conclude with the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. The parade itself begins at 5:30pm at the waterfront; there are events planned at the Torpedo Factory during the afternoon. Night  photography skills can be practices or enhanced!

SUMMARY:Field Trip: "Great Smoky Mountains" with Bob & Willa Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Bob and Willa Friedman\nThe following are some ideas you may want to consider regarding our upcoming field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. \nThis is a very large park with more than 500\,000 acres with much to see and do.. It is one of the most ecologically varied areas in the world.  You could easily spend a month here\, but to spend your limited time in the park wisely\, we strongly suggest some advanced planning – check out GSMNP web site\, www.nps.gov/grsm \, and enter “Great Smoky Mountains” into Google.  Also\, purchase Photo Traveler’s\, “Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains & Shenandoah National Parks.”  It costs $15.95 and is available by calling 800-417-4680 or going to www.phototraveler.com .  This guide is written for photographers by photographers and outlines the photographic opportunities in the park. It tells you what there is to see\, how to get there\, and at what time of day to be there for the best photo opportunities.  This is an extremely valuable resource for maximizing your time in the park and I strongly urge you to purchase one.  Don’t leave home without it. \nYour first order of business when you arrive on Wednesday is to obtain a park map from one of the park’s visitor centers.  Townsend Visitor Center is the closest (open 9:00-5:00).  It is located in Townsend\, along US 321.  There is also one located in Cades Cove (open  9:00-7:00). \nWe will be gathering at  6:30 pm on Wednesday in the Econoladge Parkside lobby to go to dinner where we will discuss Thursday’s activities.  Outlined below are some park highlights you may want to see.  These are only suggestions and may be modified according to the weather and your own tastes and interests.    \nDay 1: \nYou can easily spend most of the day driving around Cades Cove stopping every quarter mile or so to photograph horses\, deer\, settlers’ cabins\, churches\, scenery\, etc.  Be sure to stop at the Cades Cove Visitor Center where there is a working gristmill. You may want to pack a lunch because this is a loop road.  \nYou should be at the gate into Cades Cove when it opens at sunrise.  At this time of year morning fog is usually in the valley making the ordinary extraordinary – don’t miss it.  If you finish photographing Cades Cove in the afternoon\, I suggest you return towards Townsend might want to continue back past the park entrance and take the Tremont road—there are wild flowers and a running stream. \nFor your sunset photos\, plan to go to Clingmans Dome one evening depending upon the weather. \nDay 2: \nStart your day by photographing the river along Little River Road.  There are many places where you can park your car and walk down to the river.  This road ends at the Sugarlands Visitor Center.  There is a short movie at the visitor center showing the history of the park.  It’s well worth the time to see it.  Behind the visitor center\, there is a flat 1-mile nature hike to a cabin and also a short hike to the 40-foot high Cataract Falls. \nEither pack lunch or turn onto Route 441 and head into Gatlinburg for lunch.  At traffic light number 8 turn right to go to the Roaring Fork area of the park.  It is best to visit this area in the afternoon.  The road makes a big loop with places to stop and photograph\, similar to Cades Cove\, except it’s on the side of a mountain.  There are many homesteads to investigate and photograph along with the Roaring Fork Stream.  Down the path from  the first homestead there are rare pink lady slippers that are worth photographing\, however they are nestled in poison ivy. There are opportunities for hikes to several waterfalls along the way.  Two of these are of interest.  First\, Rainbow Falls is a 3.9 mile roundtrip hike to the falls.  A rainbow can be photographed at the falls on a sunny afternoon.  Second\, Grotto Falls is a fairly easy 3-mile round trip hike to the 20-foot falls.  There should be wildflowers along the trail.  On Monday\, Wednesday\, and Friday you may encounter pack llamas bringing supplies to LeConte Lodge.  Finally\, toward the end of the loop you will come to the “Place of a Thousand Drips.”  It is on the left side of the road and is well worth stopping and photographing.  The parking lot can hold only about 2 cars so you may have to wait for someone to leave.  It also may be worth carpooling. \nAfter finishing the loop you may want to get dinner while in Gatlinburg.  For sunset photos you should consider going to Clingmans Dome.  Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the park and it is cold up there\, so bring a heavy winter coat.  I got “frozen out” last year and was happy to watch the sunset from the front seat of my car.  You can photograph the sunset from the parking lot or take the steep ½-mile hike to the observation tower for a 360-degree view. \nDay 3 \nIf you can spend three days\, I suggest the following:  From Townsend\, follow the Little River Road again to Route 441\, Newfound Gap Road.  This time turn right and head into the park and up the mountain.  The first stop is Chimney Tops Picnic Area where you can photograph wildflowers.  My Photo Traveler’s Guide claims the area is covered with wildflowers in mid April and you don’t have to carry your tripod very far since the parking lot and edge of the road are covered with flowers  Also\, there are many wildflowers along the ¾-mile long Cove Hardwood Nature Trail. \nContinue following the Newfound Gap road to Mingus Mill which is ½-mile before the Oconaluftee Visitor Center.  This gristmill is well worth photographing.  At the Oconaluftee Visitor Center is the Mountain Farm Museum.  There are a bunch of 19th century farm buildings and fences that are interesting to photograph. \nIf time permits\, you might try photographing Tom’s Branch Falls.  For directions to the falls check the park map. \nPlan your return trip so you will be at Clingmans Dome at sunset.  Be sure to bring warm clothing. \nIf you need to go home on Sunday\, Bob and I suggest you go to Foot Hills Parkway for sunrise.  The first overlook on the left should have a good view.  Then return to Townsend for brunch and leave for home.  This will  also enable you to by-pass Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge traffic. \nThe following are other destinations worth considering: \nGreenbrier turnoff is located 6 miles east of Gatlinburg on Route 321.  This is a great place for spring wildflowers especially along the easy Porters Creek Trail.  You can photograph the river along the road and hike up to Fern Branch Falls on the Porters Creek Trail.  This trail may be one of the best wildflower locations in the park.  It is a very easy 1.9-mile hike to the falls.  For details see pages 23 and 24 of your Photo Traveler’s Guide. \nAlbright Grove of old-growth timber is located in the Cosby area of the park.  For details in finding the Albright Grove check out page 25 in the Photo Traveler’s Guide.  It is a moderate 7-mile roundtrip hike with 1600 feet of elevation gain along the Maddron Bald Trail.  There is an old pioneer cabin in the first ½ mile of the hike.  Of course\, there are wildflowers\, and small waterfalls where the trail crosses Indian Creek. Once you get to the grove you will see how the Smokes looked before they were logged. \nIf you love streams\, cascades and waterfalls then plan on spending a day photographing along Big Creek on the eastern end of the park – see page 27 in your Photo Traveler’s Guide.  It is an easy hike up the Big Creek Trail to Midnight Hole and Mouse Creek Falls.  Photographers generally hike up Big Creek Trail photographing the pools\, streams\, cascades and waterfalls for half a day and then turn around and “shoot” their way back to the car. \nA final note: When you plan your day\, be sure to also plan your meals.  There are no restaurants in the park that I’m aware of.  I believe you may be able to buy food at some of the campgrounds in the park.  You may want to carry an emergency stash of food in your car. \nModified by Bob and Willa Friedman\, 2008 \nThings to bring: \nTripod—to take long exposures of the streams. \nWaterproof pants\, extra shoes\, cover for camera\, rainwear\, ground cloth—this area gets about 85 inches of rain per year.  Some of it may fall during our visit. \nPolarizing filter—to take the shine off wet foliage. \nND filters\, reflector\, diffusers\, etc.  You will be photographing in full light and heavy shade—macro and landscapes and everything in between. \nKnee pads for macro shots of flowers. \nWinter jacket for sunrise and sunset. \nSnacks and water. \nLunch!  Bob and I carry peanut butter and bread because we are having too much fun to drive miles looking for lunch.

SUMMARY:Field-Trip: Longwood Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A favorite summer attraction at Longwood Gardens has recently been restored and brought to nighttime brilliance — the illuminated fountain presentations. We’ll be traveling there for a Thursday field trip on August 16. (The trip will be Thursday rather than the weekend to try to avoid the large weekend crowds.) \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet in front of the glass conservatory around 7:00 pm for the 9:15 pm show\, which lasts about 30 minutes. Please plan to have dinner before then. (If you plan to eat inside garden grounds\, the Cafe\, which was undergoing renovation during our winter field trip\, is now open\, as is a Beer Garden.) The gardens and the conservatory open at 9:00 am. Timed tickets are required for admission — $23 for adults\, $20 for seniors (62+)\, and 25 percent off the adult admission for military with a valid DOD card. If you’re a member\, you’ll need to get timed admission tickets (free) if you plan to arrive after 3:00 pm. \n\n\n\nTripods and flash — you’re allowed to use tripods in the Conservatory between 9:00 am and noon\, and in the Gardens at any time\, with exceptions. The exceptions will probably include a prohibition on tripods during the light and fountain show because of the crowds. The Garden’s policy says there “may” be restrictions that are announced prior to the performance — if the crowds are sparse\, we may be able to use tripods. They do expressly prohibit flash after dark. \n\n\n\nKennett Square is about 2 hours drive from the Dunn Loring Fire Station where NVPS meets. If you don’t want to make the drive home some time in the sun and an evening shooting the fountain and light show\, there are several hotels in and near Kennett Square. \n\n\n\nQuestions — please email field-trips “at” nvps.org.——————————————— \n\n\n\nLongwood Gardens never disappoints. Join us for a full day of photography. Arrive at your leisure and we will meet at the cafeteria for lunch at 12:30. \n\n\n\nWhat you need: \n\n\n\nPlease check their website for directions and tickets. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://longwoodgardens.org/\n\n\n\n\nIf you plan on spending the night\, check hotels in the Kennett Square Pa. area. \n\n\n\nThe Illuminated Fountain Show starts at 9:15 PM and lasts about 30 minutes. I am still working on how we might get permission to use tripods. \n\n\n\nOtherwise tripods can be used inside until noon. Outside they can be used during regular hours but be mindful of other guests. \n\n\n\nThere are great flower and architecture photography opportunities from macro to wide angle. Diffusers and reflectors are helpful outdoors. The Water Lily display in the evening is a must. \n\n\n\nI will plan on being there most of the day. If we can not use tripods for the night fountains\, I will likely leave after sunset. \n\n\n\nStan Bysshe
