SUMMARY:Field Trip: National Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:When the sun is low in the winter\, it’s a great time of year to visit the National Cathedral.  It’s a literal photographic gold mine.  On a sunny day the light creates a dynamic and colorful environment indoors that is unmatched.  The National Cathedral also features beautiful and unique Gothic revival architecture outdoors.  There are lots of details to discover here\, and I’m happy to see they have reopened recently after closing for COVID. \nAdvanced tickets cost $15 for adults ($10 for seniors and military).  We’ll be going rain\, snow\, or shine.  We’re hoping for the best possible weather. \nWhat:  \nIt’s been almost 11 years since the earthquake\, but repairs continue to the outside of the cathedral.  You will likely see scaffolding on the South side of the cathedral and around the top of the center tower.  The grounds surrounding the cathedral\, including the Bishop’s Garden\, are freely accessible to explore; however\, tickets are required if you want to go in. \nInside you will find the rose windows over the north\, south\, and west entrances.  The north side doesn’t get as much light this time of year\, but the other sides more than make up for that.  The south arcade will be the brightest.  The light shining through the stained-glass windows lasts well into the early afternoon and moves from the opposite wall to the floor and then to the adjacent wall.  The unique light shining through the stained-glass window near the statue of George Washington (southwest corner of the nave\, just to the right as you enter the nave) can’t be missed either. \nAs this is a working church\, please be respectful to others who may be there on ‘business’.  Shy your camera away from parishioners to respect their privacy.  Normally\, the cathedral offers a noontime service.  If there is a service and you are in the nave\, you may be asked to stop taking pictures.  This is normal.  Try exploring the downstairs\, towers\, or going outside for the next 30-45 minutes. \nSteven Glintz did his first portfolio on the National Cathedral.  He later self-published a much larger body of work\, but the portfolio can be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/PortfolioProject/2017-2018/Steveglintz/ \nAdditional images from our club’s last visit in 2020 can also be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/National-Cathedral-January-2020/ \nEquipment: \n\nA 24-70mm should easily capture most indoor shots\, however a 70-300mm can be useful to reach finer details higher up. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly\, VA is part of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum.  The museum is housed in a giant hanger providing ample indoor space to move about and explore. \nThis is a space for photographers who want to play and experiment.  You’ll find static displays\, but as a photographer\, you can add motion by dragging that shutter.  If geometry is your thing\, you’ll find lots of circles\, curves\, lines\, and other ways of assembling your composition.  The materials of the exhibits range from shiny to colorful challenging the photographer to find interesting abstract distortions and or unique color and geometric shapes.  There are a lot of creative outlets so take your time and study the subjects that interest you. \nWhat: \nThe Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum is located adjacent to Dulles International Airport.  The hanger exhibits full size aircraft including the Space Shuttle Discovery\, SR-71a Blackbird\, the B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay”\, and more.  Unfortunately\, there is a closed off area of the hanger under construction / renovation this year.  That means the general aviation and WW2 aviation exhibits will be impacted.  However\, the commercial aviation exhibit\, cold war era exhibit\, and space hanger are still open.  (I’m not certain if the x-wing is still in the restoration hanger or if it’s been moved to Washington DC yet.  Take a peek from the visitor overlook walkway upstairs.) \nAs per the Smithsonian website (https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center/visiting-tips) The use of tripods\, monopods\, and selfie sticks are prohibited.  Leave that weight at home and walk around in comfort.  Masks are also required while indoors. \nAlso be aware that there is no food currently sold onsite and food and drink is prohibited inside (bottled water is okay).  If you want lunch\, you’ll have to take a short car ride to eateries South on Rt.28 (exits Rt.50\, Willard Rd.\, or Westfields Blvd. all within a couple miles)\, but your original parking pass should get you back in without having to pay again. \nAdditional examples of our club’s work can be found online: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/FieldTrips-2018-2019/Udvar-Hazy-Museum-February/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/Udvar-Hazy-2017/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/Udvar-Hazy/ \n(Honestly\, I didn’t realize we as a club\, visit every other year.  It’s a fun place to go on a winter day.) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Capitol Hill Christmas Tree
DESCRIPTION:***Rescheduled to Sunday December 12th due to Saturday weather forecast of wet and windy*** \nThere’s nothing like getting into the holiday spirit than by visiting a giant tree decorated with lights.  In December\, we’ll visit the Capital Christmas Tree and surrounding area for an evening of photographic creativity.  There will be urban landscapes\, architecture\, light painting and more.  The monuments on the East side of the Mall are great at night. \nWhat: \nPhoto Credit: Rena Schild\nThe Capital Dome and Christmas tree will be our primary subjects\, however\, there’s lots of goodies around Capital Hill so feel free to explore the area.  The US Botanical Garden will also have their own outdoor holiday display (https://www.usbg.gov/plan-your-holiday-visit) that will be open until 5pm.  And don’t forget about the East side of the Capital Dome.  If it’s a wet evening\, you’ll likely find interesting (and fun) puddles on the pavement in front of the East side of the Capital.  Across 1st St. you have both the Library of Congress and Supreme Court for even more subjects.  If the Capital Dome is your thing\, maybe also check out the Upper and Lower Senate Park and look South for the dome.  There’s lots to see and do. \nSunset  4:47 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well\, but other ranges will also work if you want to bring more glass. Maybe leave the super telephoto at home.  You don’t want to attract too much attention.\nGenerally speaking\, Capital police won’t allow tripods except on the land around the Christmas tree. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Harper’s Ferry
DESCRIPTION:Many parts of West Virginia peak their fall colors in the first few weeks of October.  We’ll be visiting Harper’s Ferry after what would be considered peak season\, but that’s okay.  The sun will be lower in the sky and that can help accentuate textures and create interesting light and shadows in and around town.  This field trip may be a black and white photographer’s bread and butter\, so to speak. \nWhat:  \nPhoto Credit: David Crooks\nArchitecture photographers may find St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church interesting.  The church appears to be open now so feel free to go inside.  Landscape photographers may find sweeping vista shots from locations higher up like Jefferson Rock.  Those same photographers looking for more of a workout may try for the Maryland Heights trail (accessible via B&O Railroad Bridge) which takes you to a commanding view of the town.  The trail takes a few hours to complete\, but it can be rewarding.  Of course\, there’s all the alley ways and nooks and crannies around the downtown area.  There are lots of attractions just outside town as well including Piney Run Waterfall at Potoma Wayside Park so consider snooping around the area before you leave for the day.  For this field trip\, we’ll concentrate around downtown. \nSunrise  6:52 a.m. (EST)Sunset  4:58 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\n24-70mm is my favorite walk about lens and will serve you well in these conditions.\n70-200mm is another favorite for landscapes\, candid street photography\, and detail shots.\nTripods are welcome\nBring a mask if you plan to use the shuttle or go into any buildings. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Summit Point Raceway
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE (9/7/21): Summit Point has agreed to waive entrance fees for NVPS members and asks in exchange that we provide some of our best shots to use for social media (with credit). We would like to supply a list of the members who will attend and ask you to email the field-trip coordinators (contact information can be found at Board Contacts) by Thursday\, September 16\, 2021 if you will attend. \nUPDATE (9/7/21): The Drift Nirvana event has been moved to another date but there will still be an exciting motorcycle event on September 19. The Porsche Club of America event will also take place and\, although private\, can apparently be seen through the gate. \n\n  \nPhoto Credit: Kevin Egan \nBrush up on your panning skills and get ready for some high speed fun!  We’re heading to Summit Point Motorsports Park for some car and motorcycle action.  Summit Point has three tracks and there will be events on all three: (1) Drift Nirvana 2.0\, in which cars “drift\,” or skid\, leaving smoke in their wakes; (2) a motorcycle event; and (3) a Porsche Club of America event.  This will be a chance to get the cars and motorcycles in focus with a nice background blur or get some nice motion blur on the vehicles.  We should also be able to get close-ups of cars and motorcycles. \nWhat: \nSummit Point Motorsports Park is a road racing and driver training facility located in Summit Point\, WV.  It is about a 1.25 hour drive from Merrifield\, Virginia. \nThe events are as follows: \n\nSummit Point Circuit: Porsche Club of America Potomac – Rock the Summit (private)\nPotomac Pad:            Drift Nirvana – Team V2.0\nShenandoah Circuit:  Evolve GT Track Days (motorcycles)\n\n Equipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. \nTripods can be used but are not necessary\nBring water\, snacks and sunscreen (there are restrooms and a snack bar)\nA travel chair can be used since no one is permitted on the bleachers\n*A reflective vest is required and we must supply our own.  They can be purchased from Amazon for $13\n\nWaivers will need to be signed in order to be on the grounds \nWhen:Sunday\, September 19\, 2021 from 8:30 am – 12 p.m.  \nEvents normally run from 9 a.m. to 12 or 1 p.m.\, but there may be an afternoon session so you may opt to stay for the day.  The Shenandoah Circuit is subject to a “quiet hour” for church from 11 a.m. – noon.  \nThe Drift Nirvana fee is $10/spectator.  There is usually no charge for the motorcycle event and the Porsche event is private (and no charge)\, but you can see it from outside the gate. \nWhere:We’ll meet in the parking lot of the red building just beyond the entrance to the park at 8:30 a.m. so we can be positioned for the 9 a.m. start times.  There appear to be two entrances on Motorsports Park Circle. Jason Kolela)\nYour field trip coordinators are excited to bring you this summer-time field trip.  The Sunset Parade occurs every Tuesday evening from late May to early August at the Marine Corps War Memorial.  This free event provides an opportunity to listen to “The Commandant’s Own” US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and witness the precision drills performed by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. \nWhen the show is over\, there are even more opportunities to capture iconic shots of the Lincoln Memorial\, Washington Monument\, and US Capitol Dome from the base of the Netherlands Carillon.  I also feel the Marine Corps War Memorial is a very photogenic subject too. \nWhat: \nThe Army has their Golden Knights.  The Navy has their Blue Angles.  The Air Force has their Thunderbirds.  Only the Marine Corps has a land based performance such as this.  Let the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps and Silent Drill Platoon impress you with a demonstration of their skills and training.  Did I mention it’s FREE? \nThe performance starts at 6:45pm and runs for one hour.  After the performance\, I highly recommend the short 5 minute walk South to the base of the Netherlands Carillon to get some iconic shots of the Washington monuments lined up.  Then when you’re done with that\, why not go back to the Marine Corps War Memorial and take some shots around there.  I find that monument very photogenic\, especially after sunset. \nMasks are not required to attend provided you’ve been fully vaccinated.  It’s difficult to judge how many people will attend these performances\, but I the memorial sits on a large plot of land so outdoor physical distancing should be possible. \nMore information is found on the USMC website: https://www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/Sunset-Parade/ \nand here: https://dcphotoguide.com/marine-corps-sunset-parade-iwo-jima-memorial/ \nSunset is expected at 8:17 p.m. (EDT) \nMaster GySgt. Marines like to keep the audience at a safe distance and you might want that extra reach.\nI did not see guidance on USMC website regarding flashes\, but I would ask that you leave the flash at home. Hopefully\, there will be plenty of glorious warm sunset light that comes naturally without distraction.\nTripods are permissible provided they do not impede on the enjoyment of others.\nBring a mask (to keep on hand). Bug spray for those pesky evening gnats.  And a water bottle because it will be warm and humid.\nSeating is not available\, just plenty of grass. DESCRIPTION:Photo By: Rena Schild \nWe’re back with this club favorite\, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.  NVPS frequently visits this destination at this time of year because the lotus flowers and water lilies are in bloom.  If you haven’t got your flower shot for next season’s themed competition\, here is a great opportunity.  If you’re not into flowers\, consider the opportunities to capture images of dragon flies\, birds\, turtles\, frogs\, and more. \nWhat:  \nKenilworth Aquatic Gardens is home to heron\, birds\, dragon flies\, and amphibians.  You’ll also notice the rather obvious shallow ponds filled with lotus and water lilies. \nYou’re welcome to wander along the paths that separate the ponds in search of your next image.  When you’re done \nPhoto By: Steven Glintz \nwith the lotus and lilies\, you can take the boardwalk at the far end of the park out to a viewing platform where along the way you can typically find herons and other birds. \nThis is a very popular destination at this time of year.  Please be patient and locate your subjects while maintaining social distancing from other photographers.  The National Park Service warns that if the park becomes too crowded they may temporarily close the park gates to limit people on site. \nSunrise is expected at 5:52 a.m. (EDT) \nPhoto By: Rena Schild \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Shenandoah National Park\, Big Meadow
DESCRIPTION:The drive to the Big Meadows inside Shenandoah National Park from Fairfax is just over two hours.  This area has been chosen for its wildlife\, landscapes\, waterfalls and other diverse nature photography opportunities.  It also happens to be one of the best destinations we can occupy to avoid COVID.\n\nJune is a particularly fortunate time as the fawns should be out frolicking with mamma doe.  The trails surrounding Big Meadows campgrounds have also frequently reported black bears.  The nearby waterfalls may not have as strong a flow\, but they should also provide unique opportunities for those who are looking for a hike to go with their photography.  Others will find many opportunities to pull off the side of Skyline Drive to find inspirations a few hundred feet from the side of the road.  (Skyline Drive is about 106 miles long and takes about 3 hours to drive.  Add in frequent stops and you’re looking at a better part of a full day of shooting.)\n\nThe Shenandoah Valley also makes for a spectacular subject should conditions present themselves for a sunset shot or nighttime astro-photography. In fact\, this field trip offers so much to photograph that you might just want to include an overnight stay at the Big Meadows Lodge or at a nearby accommodation.\n\nBig Meadows Lodge\nSkyline Drive Mile 51\nShenandoah Natl Park\, VA 22835\n\nhttps://www.goshenandoah.com/lodging/big-meadows-lodge\n\nNote: new COVID cancellation policies include no-charge cancellations “by 4:00 pm EDT 2 days before the scheduled arrival date.”\n\nWhat:\n\nAs mentioned above\, this destination is abundant in all things wild\, from wildlife to wildflowers.  On June 12 (or June 13 in case of rain)\, we’ll meet in the afternoon at the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center to plan our late afternoon photography activities.  From there\, we’ll decide if it’s best to trek the Big Meadows loop trail across the road for deer\, explore the campground trails for bears\, or start the landscape hunt early.  We’ve timed this field-trip in hopes of capturing the fawns and cubs that inhabit the Big Meadows area\, but there are opportunities for other nature inspired photography you may not want to miss.\n\nSunrise is expected at 5:49 a.m. (EDT)\nSunset is expected at 8:38 p.m. (EDT)\n\nMilky Way will be visible for most of the night.\n\nMoon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase (4%\, New moon on June 10)  https://www.moongiant.com/calendar/june/2021/\n\n\nEquipment:\n\n 	Any lens between 18-200mm will satisfy most landscape needs. For wildlife captures\, I recommend 300mm+.  Wildlife are accustomed to humans\, but you still need to keep your distance.\n 	Astro-photographers should bring fast wide angle lenses.\n( f/5.6 okay\, f/4 better\, f/2.8 even better )\n 	I never leave the house without a polarizer.  Bring your other neutral density and graduated filters to help balance your exposures.\n 	Tripods are allowed everywhere.\n 	Don’t forget a spare battery and memory card(s).\n 	Bring a light jacket for higher altitude temperatures and comfortable shoes.\n 	Bring a mask and some personal hand sanitizer\n\nRemember\, fuel is available near the visitor center\, but it can be a bit expensive.  Be sure to fuel up prior to entering the park as there only three gas stations along the drive (milepost 24\, milepost 51\, and milepost 79).\n\nWhen:\n\nSaturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\nRain date on Sunday\, June 13\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\n\nWhere:\n\nWe will meet outside the Harry F. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Brookside Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Brookside Gardens is part of the Wheaton Regional Park and is operated by Montgomery Parks. This award-winning 50-acre public display garden has a wide array of subjects to satisfy the landscape and garden photographer. The location boasts excellent water features such as a small pond with reflection terrace and a Japanese tea house\, a brook connecting the pond to Pine Lake (further south)\, and an aquatic garden. May and early June are especially colorful months for Maryland and Virginia so we can expect many of the various gardens maintained by the park to be in full bloom. \nAdmission to the gardens is free and no permits are required for non-commercial photographers. Brookside Gardens asks that photographers not disturb the gardens\, block paths\, or interfere with other visitors’ enjoyment of the gardens.  (Brookside Gardens Photo Policy) \nWhat: \nThis outdoor venue will give us a very colorful way of keeping our social distancing up while we ride out the COVID variants. We’ll meet at the visitor’s center where we can say hello and get caught up. Groups can break off to start capturing wider landscape shots found by walking south of the visitor’s center (follow trails leading to your right). Or if you’re more inclined to start working the garden vignettes\, follow the trails east of the visitor’s center (generally trails that lead to the left). Either way\, you can’t lose. \nUnfortunately\, the conservatory building is closed. That means there will be no access to the greenhouse or the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. When they reopen\, it is recommended you return and pay the small fee to enter. \nSunrise is expected at 5:56 a.m (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 18-200mm should satisfy most needs. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Enid A. Haupt Garden / Smithsonian Castle
DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s Enid A. Haupt Garden sits at the center of the city block framed between 12th St. and 7th St. SW and Independence Ave and Jefferson Dr SW.  Included in this block are a number of iconic and unique structures including (but not limited to) the Smithsonian Castle\, Arts and Industries Building\, and Hirshhorn Museum.  Between these structures\, the Smithsonian maintains a variety of gardens and outdoor vignettes including the Haupt Garden\, Moongate Garden\, Mary Livingston Ripley Garden\, and more.  This spot is a gem on The Mall of Washington DC and ideal for our purposes allowing us to spread out. \nYour field trip coordinators have chosen a date in mid-April in hopes of avoiding any potential leftover crowds caused by the cherry blossoms.  At the time of this writing\, all museums are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Also in the news are the renovations planned for the Haupt Garden and immediate area.  However\, we have received word\, the construction planned for 2021 will now begin in 2023. \nWhat: \nIn this field trip\, we’ll tip toe through the tulips while gawking at the architecture.  The Smithsonian Castle and the Enid A. Extensive woodland trails\, boardwalks through the wetlands\, and an observation deck allow for close viewing of the abundant and diverse wildlife. March conditions can be unpredictable as we transition from winter to spring. DESCRIPTION:Please join us in applying what we learned from September’s Education and Training session with Lynn Cates as we explore Great Falls\, Maryland. \nWhat:  \nThe C&O tow path between the visitor center and the path to the Great Falls overlooks offer opportunities to capture wildlife\, color\, reflections\, and more.  Landscapes\, details\, abstracts\, and more opportunities are available for what we hope will be peak Fall season subjects. \nWe’ll meet and greet outside the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center restrooms.  From there\, we’ll head South towards Washington DC along the C&O tow path.  There are several trails that branch off the tow path that you’re welcome to explore as you practice your social distancing.  About 0.3 miles from the Visitor’s center is the Olmstead Island Trail that bridges the tow path to the primary overlook.  Beware the bridge will bob up and down as pedestrians cross.  It’s also narrow so take care if you decide put a tripod down on the bridge.  Anything you drop is instantly donated to the rocks and rapids below.  Additional photographic opportunities are also available within another mile down the path towards Washington.  Feel free to explore.  Please anticipate hiking on a compact gravelly path for about 1 mile or more.  Bring comfortable hiking shoes and anticipate the cooler weather. \nFor those unfamiliar with the area\, please be advised that sections of the Billy Goat Trail should not be traversed (especially with expensive camera gear) unless you’re willing to accept the risks including steep drops and large rock scrambling.  Parts of that trail can be considered strenuous and people frequently injure themselves.  Also\, as of July 3\, 2020\, this trail has also been designated one way going downstream towards Washington. \nTripods are widely accepted.  Please be mindful when staking your spot and maintain your social distancing. \nSunrise is anticipated at 6:50 a.m. \nHere are some equipment recommendations: \n\nA sturdy tripod\nAny and all glass will be useful\, however if you want to pick out details of the falls\, consider a 200mm or longer lens with optional teleconverter. The estimated distance from the overlook to the middle of the falls is about 40 yards.\nFilters optional\, though a polarizer to eliminate glare may come in handy since you’ll be shooting perpendicular to the sunrise.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\,  November 14\, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.\nRain date on Sunday\, November 15\, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll assemble briefly at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center / restrooms adjacent to the parking lot.  If you don’t see us there\, head South towards Washington DC until you reach the overlook trailhead.  You’re certain to run into other members. \n  \nEntrance fees have increased in January 2020.  The current rate per car is $20.  If you walk into the park\, the cost is $10.  The fee buys you a permit allowing you to reenter both sides of Great Falls (Maryland and Virginia side) for up to seven days from the date issued.  America the Beautiful and Great Falls Annual pass holders gain free entry.  If you’re on the fence about getting an America the Beautiful pass\, know that the cost of the Great Falls Annual pass can be put towards upgrading to the America the Beautiful pass. \nCarpools are recommended to save you cash provided you can travel with others in your extended “bubble”.  Please remember to bring a mask and anticipate wearing the mask while around others.  Please also be patient and remain the recommended six feet away from other visitors. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \n* Photographs courtesy Stan Bysshe.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS gallery. Great Falls Gallery \n

DESCRIPTION:This field trip has been Cancelled!\nWhen: Saturday\, March 14\, 2020\, at 10:00 a.m \nWhere: Luray Caverns \n101 Cave Hill Rd\, Luray\, VA 22835 \nField Trip Leader: Jim Sinsheimer \nJoin NVPS for an unearthly experience to the Luray Caverns March 14\, 2020! We will experience cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high\, towering stone formations\, and natural wonders at every turn. While tripods are not allowed\, with the proper camera settings you will be able to achieve wonderful results. \nIn March it is hard to know what the weather will be\, but it won’t matter to us. The caverns are a constant 54 degrees with very high humidity which makes it feel more like 65 degrees. Some people prefer a light jacket while touring the caverns. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. \nWe will meet at the Visitor Center in the morning at 10:00 a.m. Carpooling will be encouraged since from the Firehouse where we meet it’s at least a 1.5-hour drive. \nIf you are planning to join us you will be able to purchase your ticket online at Luray Caverns Ticket Sales. Better yet\, if we get 20 confirmed participants\, we will be able to get a group rate. General admission includes Luray Caverns\, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum\, Toy Town Junction\, and the Luray Valley Museum. \nWe are also planning to meet for lunch following the field trip someplace close by in the town of Luray. DESCRIPTION:NVPS Field Trip \nLibrary of Congress \nFebruary 17\, 2020 at 8:30 a.m. \nPresidents Day \nEstablished in 1800\, the Library of Congress (LOC) “is the world’s largest library with more than 167 million items\, in 470 languages\,38 million books\, and other print materials\, 3.6 recordings\, 1.4 million photographs\, 5.5 million maps\, 8.1 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts.” (LOC Website https://www.loc.gov/) \nThe February 17\, 2020 Field Trip will be to the Library of Congress\, Jefferson Building.  The Jefferson Building is a remarkable building with a plethora of beautiful architecture and art to photograph.  It is where the LOC Reading Room is located\, this room is restricted and only open to the public 2 days a year\, one is President’s Day.   \nThe hours of the Library are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We will plan to meet at the First Street\, SE entrance at 8:30 to get an early start.  We will need to split up into smaller groups of no more than 5 individuals when we enter the LOC. \nThe best way to arrive is public transportation\, the closest metro stations are Capitol South or Union Station.  For additional information:  www.loc.gov/visit/directions. \nThe security process requires going through airport security like system.  Oversized bags (not exceeding 25”x15”) which will not fit through the conveyor belts for the x-ray system are prohibited.  No provisions are available to check prohibited items. \nPhotography is allowed in public areas of the Jefferson Building.  The use of a flash is prohibited\, as well as certain photographic equipment\, including tripods and selfie sticks.  Please familiarize yourself ahead of time with the LOC Photography and Video Guidelines\, which must be observed. DESCRIPTION:NVPS January 2020 Field Trip to Washington National Cathedral \nWhen: Saturday\, January 11\, 2020  \nWhere: Washington National Cathedral \n3101 Wisconsin Ave.\, N.W. \nWashington\, D.C. 20016  \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \n \nSteve Glintz of NVPS\, will share his knowledge and lead the field trip to the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday\, January 11\, 2020\, at 10 a.m. (date subject to change with notice in the event new activities are announced at the Cathedral which would impact our plans – Steve will monitor). \nThe plan is to meet at 10:00 a.m. at the northwest corner of the Cathedral near Wisconsin Ave. by the elevator to the underground parking.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and active military/veterans. Parking is available underground for $9\, or for free on Wisconsin Ave. if it’s your lucky day.  There are mass transportation options listed on the Cathedral’s website https://cathedral.org/visit-us/directions-parking/.   \nThe morning will start by exploring the South side arcade.  This side of the Cathedral really shines in the morning due to the low angle of the sun.  Participants should slowly make their way down to the high altar to check out the light splashing on the organ pipes\, the altar\, and the many decorations above. \nAt 12 noon\, there is a 30-minute service.  We will have to disperse at this time. No photography is allowed near the high altar\, the naive\, or either arcade (basically anywhere inside on the ground floor).  Steve recommends going downstairs to explore the crypt or going up the elevator in the Northwest tower which connects to the Southwest tower.   \nWhen the service concludes\, the group will return to the ground floor for an encore.  This time to explore the naive and the North arcade. The sun will be at its highest point in the sky and the light cast through the stained-glass windows above creates more unique photographic opportunities.   \nIf participants feel they’ve been overloaded with architecture and color\, there are opportunities to flex your creative muscles.  Multiple exposures of some of the glass windows allow you to combine interesting subjects in unusual settings. Or try dragging the shutter.  This place is literally a candy store for the photographer to quote Steve. \nThe group will take a break around 2 p.m. to meet up next door (immediately south next to the Bishop’s Garden) at the Cathedral coffee shop. They offer coffee\, hot chocolate\, pastries\, and other lite snacks.   \nWhen 3:30 p.m. rolls around\, the group will return outdoors in hopes of a sunset which will turn the outside of the Cathedral that warm golden glow. \nIt’s going to be a full day of photographic wonders\, so stay as long as you like. \nWe hope you can join us! SUMMARY:Field Trip - Waterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster's House
DESCRIPTION:October Field Trip \nWaterford\, VA and Barbecue at Roger Lancaster’s House \nWaterford\, located in northern Loudoun County\, is one of the most photogenic locations in our region. Founded in the early 1700s\, it is today a National Historic Landmark District\, with buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These include the Waterford Mill (mid-1700s)\, the “Arch House Row” (also mid 18th Century)\, and the Presbyterian church (1882). Waterford\, with a largely Quaker and abolitionist population\, remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War\, but was the scene of a battle. \nMany of us know Waterford from its annual fair in early October. (It will be October 4\, 5\, 6 and this year.) Roger Lancaster knows it as home and has offered to share some of his favorite photographic locations with us during a NVPS Field Trip on Saturday\, October 19. An added bonus is Roger will have the keys to the mill\, the old school and other buildings\, plus he has made arrangements to visit some of the beautiful gardens. \nYou can get a preview of Waterford’s sites and articles on its history at https://www.waterfordhistory.org/ \nAfter touring the Waterford area\, Roger will host a potluck at his house. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Old Town Alexandria - Street Photography
DESCRIPTION:September 2019 Field Trip \nOld Town Street Photography \nWithin eyesight of Washington\, D.C.\, on the Potomac River Old Town Alexandria\, VA is nationally recognized for its rich history\, beautifully preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture\, cobble stone streets\, and for their delightful festivals\, parades\, shops\, restaurants and great people watching. \nKicking off the 2019 – 2020 club year\, two of NVPS’ best street photographers\, Willa and Bob Friedman\, will lead a field trip through Old Town Alexandria.  They will provide an opportunity for us to learn and/or refine the art of street photography\, including how to capture in” stealth mode” those special moments of people doing their thing. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 21st at \nTime: 9:00a.m. \nWhere: 301 King Street\, Alexandria\, VA \nWe will meet at the entrance to the Market Square Parking Garage (Republic Parking) at 110-198 N. Fairfax Street near the intersection of King Street and N. Fairfax.  There is free parking until noon according to their website. Note – the last time Bob was there the sign said 1:00PM. \nWe will begin by wandering through the market seeking interesting scenes and people.  Once we’ve had our fill and/or the market gets too crowded\, we will head toward the river taking photos along the way which includes some interesting architecture.  Then along the river behind the Torpedo Factory is a park and veranda with great opportunities to catch people “doing their thing” and interacting with a new art installation.   \nAs to photo gear a medium zoom covers it all. Wide angle and normal lens\, 50-75mm should be adequate. A long lens is not recommended. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Night Photography at Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:On August 14 Mike Whalen will lead a late-afternoon/evening field-trip to the Montgomery County Fair in Gaithersburg\, MD. This is an excellent opportunity to photograph colorful lights and carnival rides\, award-winning farm animals\, people having fun\, and so much more. \nA highlight will be to capture night photos of the many moving light-trails produced by the rides. Plan to stay well after dark. A tripod  is a must  for slow-shutter captures\, and a wide-standard focal length zoom lens would be most useful. \nWe will plan to meet inside the fairgrounds around 4:00 PM\, likely near the poultry house on Hickory Ave.  We will also plan to meet at 6:30 near the intersection of Red Oak St. and Maple Ave. to grab a quick bite at one of the nearby eateries. After that\, we will migrate to the carnival area to photograph lights\, rides\, concessions\, etc. (See map below.) \nIf your interested\, please contact Mike via email (specialboardmember1 “at” nvps.org) and include your cell phone number in case he needs to contact you. \nThe admission cost is $15 and parking is $10. DESCRIPTION:Stan Bysshe \nPlan a fun weekend shooting images in Chincoteague on the Eastern Shore of Virginia under the guidance of our President and Bird Photography extraordinaire Stan Bysshe. The drive will take between 3 and 4 hours depending on your starting point. Ten rooms have been reserved at the Comfort Suites in Chincoteague (757-336-3700/5452). DESCRIPTION:Updated: April 16\, 2019\nField Trip: Eastern State Penitentiary\, Philadelphia PA \nApril 20\, 2019 @ 9:30 am – 1:00pm\, Cost: $11 (seniors $10) + $5 for tripods \n2027 Fairmont Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19130 \nThis field trip provides an opportunity to photograph a haunting world of crumbling cell-blocks and empty guard towers of a famous prison. \nWe will have an early admission at 9:30am and will enjoy a guided highlight tour from 9:30-10:00 am\, before the facility opens to the public. Driving time from Northern Virginia is around 2.5 to 3 hours. Please be on time! \nWe have a reduced entrance fee of $11 per adult\, and $10 for seniors\, and a reduced tripod fee of $5 if our group has a minimum of 15 persons.  In order to get the reduced rate\, I will need to pay for our group with my credit card and be reimbursed by club members. \nThe building does not have any climate control so please dress accordingly. \n Suggested lenses are super-wide angle (16mm FF)\, medium wide to tele zoom (24-105mm FF)\, and short telephoto to 200mm FF. SUMMARY:Field-Trip: Truck Graveyard
DESCRIPTION:The “Truck Graveyard” is the destination for our March 23rd Field Trip. The Graveyard is situated on the property of the PL Duncan Company located at 2 Duncan Store Road in Columbia Virginia. Travel time from the Beltway is approximately 2 3⁄4 hours primarily on Routes 66\, 29 and 15 South. About 60 vintage (mid 20th century) vehicles in various states of decay are scattered among the several acres of wooded area\, open fields and under the roof of some quite dilapidated storage buildings. As morning light is preferable we should plan to start our shoot at 9:00 AM. As Columbia\, VA is quite a schlep from N. VA\, we encourage your early sign up to facilitate forming carpools. \nOne further note: there are no facilities within 20-minutes of the truck graveyard. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center\, Air & Space Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the destination for the NVPS February Field Trip\, scheduled  to meet at 10:00 AM on Saturday\, February 16th.    The museum is located in Chantilly near the Dulles Airport\, accessible from Route 28.  The Center is the companion facility to the National Air and Space Museum at the National Mall. \nThere are hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft on display including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird a super-sonic spy craft\, the Boeing B-29 Super Fortress Enola Gay that delivered the decisive atomic attack on Japan that ended the WWII in the Pacific theater\, the Space Shuttle Discovery\, among many others.  Other current exhibits include:  Aerobatic Flight\, Application Satellites\, Business Aviation\, Clouds in a Bag\, and Cold War Aviation. \nThe Center is located at 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway\, Chantilly.  As tripods are not permitted inside of the Center\, photography can be challenging.  None-the-less\, the myriad artifacts\, displays and architecture provide rich opportunities for creative captures. \nThe museum opens at 10:00 AM.  There is no fee for admission\, however there is a $15.00 fee to park your car.  Accordingly we encourage and will facilitate forming carpools.  Refreshments to follow photography will likely be had at one of the several excellent Breweries in nearby Sterling or Ashburn (TBD).

SUMMARY:December 1\, 2018 - Field Trip: "Scottish Festival" -  Alexandria\, VA
DESCRIPTION:Our December field trip will be December 1 in Old Town Alexandria. We’ll start with the Scottish Walk\, a holiday parade that’s an Alexandria tradition\, with the tartans of Scottish Clans\, the  stirring sound of Scottish bagpipes and drums\, Scottish dancers\, reenactment groups\, Scottie dogs\, dignitaries\, classic cars\, Santa Claus\, and much more.” The parade begins at St. Asaph and Wolfe Streets in Old Town (photo opportunities abound as the groups get organized) and ends at Market Square. In addition to the parade itself\, this is an excellent opportunity for street  photography\, especially for those who are somewhat intimidated by asking people if we can photograph them. The parade starts at 11:00am though the staging area will be active well before that.  \nAfter the parade\, we’ll meet at Mia’s Italian Kitchen at the base of King Street at 1:00pm; we have a reservation upstairs. \nThe day will conclude with the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. The parade itself begins at 5:30pm at the waterfront; there are events planned at the Torpedo Factory during the afternoon. Night  photography skills can be practices or enhanced!
