SUMMARY:Field Trips: Dupont Circle
DESCRIPTION:NVPS September 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn September we’re going to hone our street photography skills in Dupont Circle\, a lively\, busy part of DC. We’ll find photo ops from the many restaurants\, storefronts\, and people out and about and heading to brunch. We’ll also go down a few of the nearby residential streets for some architectural photography. We’re going to go there on a Sunday to make parking easier to find and because street parking is free. When: \n\n\n\nSunday\, Sept. 10 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, Sept. 9 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (Rain date announced by Thursday\, Sept. 7th) \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nSince stealth is the name of the game\, a walk-around lens with good range (e.g. 24-120 or 28-300) or a small prime lens (50mm) is recommended. Think light! No tripods or monopods are needed and only one camera body is recommended.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet on the sidewalk outside the Dupont Circle North Metro station (corner of 20th and Q Streets\, NW). \n\n\n\nThere is street parking in the areas surrounding Dupont Circle and any metered parking should be free on Sundays. The Dupont Circle North metro station is on Metro’s red line. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\nPhotographs courtesy Bob Friedman

SUMMARY:August 16\, 2023: Field Trips: Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:NVPS August 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Montgomery County Fair for a weekday field trip. The fair is a lot of fun as it challenges the creativity and eye of the photographer. There’s lots to photograph at the agriculture fair\, however\, our group this year will be focusing on the midway and rides after dark. \n\n\n\nIf you have the time\, spending the late afternoon strolling around the Upper Grounds and the Old MacDonald’s Barn (https://mcagfair.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023-Fair-Map-Letter-FINAL.pdf) can be rewarding. You’ll find a photography exhibit\, old time agriculture machinery and general store\, flower and garden displays\, and a variety of demonstrations including chain saw sculpting. You’ll also find the raptor tent where the local rescue organization will put on display several hawks and owls. The racing pigs show will also be returning this year. It always seems to bring out a smile and a few memorable images. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur group will meet just inside the main entrance about an hour before sunset. After our usual socializing and planning\, we’ll split up and begin the hunt on the midway. We’ll find carnival games\, concessions\, prizes\, and the colorful glitz that surrounds them. We’ll also find fair attendees gorging on corn dogs\, cotton candy\, and popcorn\, playing games\, and enjoying the thrills of the rides. The Grandstand will also be showing monster trucks at their show starting at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nTripods are essential for after dark photography. Find spots that are not heavy in pedestrian traffic to avoid patrons tripping over your gear.\n\n\n\nWide angle lenses (24-70mm) will work great\, but you will also want to bring something with just a little extra reach (70-200mm) for longer range candid photography.\n\n\n\nWear comfortable walking shoes.\n\n\n\nIf you plan to attend the agriculture fair\, be sure to remember the sunscreen and a hat.\n\n\n\nBring extra cash for drinks and snacks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 17\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nWe’ll meetup at 7pm just past the main gate and security check. You’ll find our group hanging out next to the first concession stand straight ahead. \n\n\n\nParking and tickets: \n\n\n\nOnsite parking is $15 per car. There should be plenty of parking\, but anticipate some heavy traffic. Car-pooling is a good option. \n\n\n\nFree parking with shuttle bus is also available from the Odendhal Ave parking lot at Lakeforest Mall. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 online\, $15 at the gate. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: National Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take it slow as we tour the The United States National Arboretum for our August field trip. This 446 acre park is impossible to cover in a single visit\, but it always has something to see if you slow down. The park has landscapes\, wild flowers\, gardens\, museums\, and more. You can walk the park\, hop from trail to trail in your car\, or stalk the scenery as you cruise the many winding roads of the park all from the comfort of your air conditioned car. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start our tour at the visitor’s center. Ignoring the obvious signs of renovation and construction occurring around the building at this time\, the pond and nearby gardens across the street will offer plenty of opportunities for more intimate subjects. Working South the landscape begins to open with unique framing and landscape opportunities. You’ll have the option of taking the paved road along Ellipse Rd NE (East of the Columns) or the dirt path through the field to the Capitol Columns. Both paths offer different compositions with either fields of grass or leading lines in the foreground. We’ll stay and study the columns for more shots before returning to the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nWhen 10am approaches\, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum opens for more intimate views. You can also return to your car and drive South\, past the Columns\, to the Fern Valley parking lot. The Fern Valley (North of the parking lot) offers year round wildflower blossoms and the nearby Youth Garden (just before the parking lot) will have butterflies fluttering about in their butterfly garden. \n\n\n\nThe park is enormous. Going inside the visitor’s center to interview the ranger on what to see should also be considered. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nBring your landscape and macro lenses. A 12-24mm\, 24-70mm\, 70-200mm\, or macro lenses can all be used depending on your creativity as you stroll the park. \n\n\n\nNever leave home without a polarizer. Consider packing an ND filter as well if you don’t want people in your landscapes.\n\n\n\nTripods are welcome in the park with the obvious precautions. Keep the tripod out of the gardens and don’t block narrow passages.\n\n\n\nThe weather will be hot and humid. Bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and comfortable hiking shoes. Benches litter the park and provide welcome resting spots. The visitor’s center\, which opens at 8am has restrooms. The gift shop across the street opens at 10am and also has restrooms. Port-a-poties are available\, but they are few scattered throughout the park.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 12\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 13\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nThe park will not open gates until exactly 8am. Take your time and find a parking spot near the entrance after the gates open and we’ll wait for you at the traffic circle in front of the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections: \n\n\n\n2400 R St NE\, \n\n\n\nWashington\, DC 20002 \n\n\n\nIf you cannot join us for this field trip\, maybe our other offering this month to the Montgomery County Fair will better suit your schedule and or desires. \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023(If you need to contact the coordinators click on Board Contacts\, then click on the link next to field-trips.) \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz and Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Green Spring Gardens
DESCRIPTION:In July we’re heading to a club favorite\, Green Spring Gardens. In the gardens on the main level the flowers should be in bloom and plentiful\, and on the lower level there should be beautiful lotuses in bloom at the pond. It may be a little early for the hummingbirds which appear every summer\, but there are other birds to photograph in the gardens as well as butterflies\, bees and dragonflies on the flowers. And there are always people enjoying the gardens who make for good subjects. \nWhere: \nGreen Spring Gardens4603 Green Spring Rd.Alexandria\, VA \nPlease note that while the grounds are open from dawn to dusk\, the gate to the parking lot should be down and the parking lot closed when we arrive. There are two options for parking: (1) in the parking spaces on Witch Hazel Road (accessed from Braddock Rd.) leading to the parking lot\, before you get to the closed gate; and (2) on Green Spring Road (accessed from Little River Turnpike) across from the Salvation Army. Parking is permitted there where noted from 7 a.m. on. \nhttps://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/green-spring/hours \nWhen: Saturday\, July 8\, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. (Rain date: Sunday\, July 9\, 2023 from 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) \nEquipment: \n\nFor the flora\, lenses in the 24-70 range and macro lenses will work well. If you have a Lensbaby you may want to bring that for a dreamy effect\nTripods are helpful and permitted but not necessary\nFor bird photography\, bring the longest lens you have\n\nNotes: \nWe will meet at the gazebo on the main level\, i.e. the level with the parking lot\, at 7:30 a.m. \nSunrise on July 8 will be at 5:49 a.m. If you want to start shooting before the meetup time you can return to the gazebo at 7:30 a.m. or look for us in the park. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Upperville Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:With the exception of the American Civil War\, The Great War\, World War 2\, and the recent pandemic\, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show has been held every year under the oak trees of Grafton Farm since 1853. Originally established to showcase and improve local breeding stock\, today’s longest running horse show in America is considerably bigger attracting over 20\,000 spectators and is one of the most prestigious in the country. \nOur June field trip will take us West on Route 50 to Upperville\, VA where on Sunday June 11\, 2023 we will attend the 170th Horses & Horsepower Car Show. The day starts with a car show including antique roasters\, muscle cars\, and other cars that will satisfy the exotic motorist and photographer. The car show\, however\, is only the tip of the iceberg because the afternoon events at the farms culminate in the racing horses around the grand prix track. \nInclement weather may delay the events on the final day of the show. With our club picnic and other events landing on the same weekend\, we do not have an alternate day scheduled. If the weather turns sour\, we’ll send out a notice to cancel the field trip. \nMore information about the show can be found online: \nhttps://wineandcountrylife.com/the-upperville-colt-horse-show/ https://www.upperville.com/ \nPlease be aware of the event’s photography policies. \n\n“The use of flash attachments is not permitted on horse paths\, in the paddock or during competition.”\n\nTickets: \nParking is free and so is the show. Reserved seating is available for a price. See https://upperville.com for more information. \nEquipment: \n\nBring a standard lens (24-70mm) as you walk about the grounds hunting for subjects.\nBring your super telephoto (300mm+) to catch the action around the grand prix. A 200mm will get you shots\, but you may find cropping later to get that little extra zoom.\nNever leave home without a polarizer.\nNo flash photography is permitted at the horse show.\nWeather will be warm and there aren’t enough trees to shade you from the afternoon sun. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself. Food trucks and tents will be onsite to accept your money. Porta-potties will also be available.\n\nWhen: \nSunday\, June 11\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (no rain day) \nWhere: \nReferring to the Upperville Colt & Horse Show Grounds Map\, we’ll meet near Gate 2 across Rt.50 from the main parking area. \nhttps://goo.gl/maps/dNiw418wBBz3P21PA(38.988583\, -77.856111) \nDirections: \n8300 John S Mosby Hwy.Upperville\, VA 20184 \nReferring to the Upperville Colt & Horse Show Grounds Map\, general admission is through Gate 4. \nCOVID precautions: \nThis is an outdoor event that is heavily attended. We’re anticipating a low exposure risk given the time of year and outdoor activity. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n*Photographs courtesy of Stan Bysshe

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Revolutionary War Weekend at Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:It’s another British invasion. This time it’s centered at Washington’s Mt. Vernon and it involves highly enthusiastic historical re-enactors instead of a rock band. We’ll visit Mt. Vernon during their Revolutionary War Weekend. This is a large event hosting hundreds of re-enactors and has become very popular. Tickets will sell out well in advance. \nWe’ll hope for the best possible weather as we plan to attend Saturday morning. If you cannot secure Saturday tickets\, you may want to consider attending Sunday instead. This is an awesome event for any history buff and photographer interested in portraits\, candids\, and historically accurate journalistic compositions. There is so much to see and the cast are photo friendly. \nThe schedule of events for the day is not published until the “generals” meet\, usually the morning of the event. Camp life is demonstrated throughout the day and there is always something happening. Use your eyes and ears to anticipate unique opportunities so you can be at the right place at the right time. Troop inspection usually occurs around 10am in the morning and will be announced over the PA system. Pick your side and stick with them. In the past\, there have been two scheduled skirmishes\, one around 12pm and another around 2pm. Skirmishes are dependent on the weather as they will be using real muskets and real gunpowder. \nRemember\, most participants are photogenic and welcome the opportunity provided they’re not busy. Approach with a smile and a curiosity and you may find yourself much smarter after the encounter. The cast is very knowledgeable about their uniforms\, the unit they are a member of\, and their camp. \nWe’ll start our tour from the Ford Orientation Center (aka visitor’s center). We’ll leave the visitor’s center and follow the path leading us towards the Continental Army encampment which is usually found on the lawn beyond the Bowling Green. The British and Hessian camps are usually located on the back lawn (river side) behind the upper garden. Families (yes\, actual wives and children) of the soldiers often accompany the re-enactors just like camp followers would have in the past and they even play their historical rolls as well. \nIt won’t take long for many of us to become separated\, engrossed in whatever catches our eye. This is certainly anticipated though we encourage small groups while you tour. We’ll wander around from tent to tent\, capture scenes and events\, and find groups of soldiers marching or otherwise preparing for the day. \nOur groups will most likely react to events announced over the PA. Everything is a short walk\, but you’re not going to see everything as some events overlap. We recommend finding something and following the action for a while before moving on. Some events like the skirmishes may require you to plan ahead and stake out a spot before the crowds overtake the venue. Knowing the contour of the land\, a bit of luck\, and a hint about the planned skirmish will help you find the right spot. \nPlease be aware of Mt. Vernon’s code of conduct which includes their photography policy. No flash photography indoors and tripods are prohibited despite the fact that events such as Mt. Vernon fireworks displays have allowed tripods outdoors in the past. \nhttps://www.mountvernon.org/plan-your-visit/tips-for-your-visit/guidelines/guest-code-of-conduct/ \nTickets: \nMt. Vernon’s Revolutionary War Weekend is a ticketed event. Your ticket gives you access to all events for the day as well as general admission to Mt. Vernon including an optional tour of the mansion. This is a popular event\, so we recommend you purchase your tickets online well in advance. \nhttps://www.mountvernon.org/plan-your-visit/calendar/events/revolutionary-war-weekend/ \nAdult: $35Youth: $21 \nEquipment: \n\nYou will have the opportunity to get up close and talk with the event participants. A standard lens (about 24-70mm) will cover most of the images you’ll capture walking around the camps.\nWeather permitting\, there will be multiple mock skirmishes with musket and cannon fire. For these events\, you will be required to stand behind roped off viewing areas. For this reason\, be sure to bring a telephoto lens. A 200mm will give you a wide shot of the “battlefield”. You will need at least a 300mm to isolate individuals.\nAlways bring a polarizer.\nNo flash photography is permitted in the mansion or galleries.\nTripods are also prohibited. You shouldn’t need your tripod anyways. Save yourself the weight and leave it at home.\nWeather is anticipated to be warm. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the afternoon sun. You may also want to bring a small bottle of water with you. Restrooms are available on-site. Benches are available but are spread around the grounds and there never seems to be enough. There is seating on the back porch of the mansion for anyone who wants an extended break to enjoy the late Spring breeze in the shade.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, May 6\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.Sunday\, May 7\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (alternate) \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet briefly at the traffic circle between the Mt. Vernon gift shop and the path leading to the visitor’s center / main entrance. \nDirections: \n3200 Mount Vernon Memorial HighwayMount Vernon\, Virginia 22121 \nPlenty of free parking is available. Be sure to ride with your fellow club mate and convince them to let you off at the traffic circle before you reach the parking lots. This destination is accessible via metro bus service #101 Fort Hunt – Mt. Vernon. \nCOVID precautions: \nThis is an outdoor event with a few opportunities to tour indoors. If you plan to tour the mansion you will wait in line outdoors and then be guided through the mansion in small groups. Masks are are not required and are a personal choice. We’re anticipating a low exposure risk. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER *** to rain date of Sunday\, April 16\, 2023\, 10am to 1pm\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is our pleasure to introduce April’s field trip to the Hillwood Estate\, Museum\, and Gardens. This is a rare destination for our club to explore. The estate is huge and we may not cover it all in one visit\, but we’re certain you will end the day satisfied\, already planning your next visit. \nThe former owner\, Marjorie Merriweather Post maintained an extensive collection of orchids\, so a visit to the greenhouse to see the orchids and other flowers maintained by today’s horticulturists is sure to be impressive. Spring will be well underway and the Japanese style garden will be amazing despite the fact that the cherry blossoms will have past their prime. The Lunar Lawn will also draw in photographers with rows of flowers lining the perimeter. Sculptures and various other subjects will be discovered while wandering around the French Parterre and Four Seasons garden. \nThere is so much to see outdoors you may forget about the lavishly decorated mansion and museum. Inside you can tour the mansion’s collection of Imperial-era Russian art. You’ll also find exotic French furniture\, tapestries\, and paintings as you wander through the rooms of the mansion. \nOn the day of our field trip\, we’ll start with the outdoors. After we’ve paid our admission\, we’ll break into smaller groups and spread out to the various gardens to take advantage of the soft morning light. At or about high noon\, we’ll gather around the Merriweather Cafe for a break. They will have indoor dining as well as a to go menu which will allow us to eat and chat outside in the warm spring weather. The light may be a bit harsh after our break so we recommend going indoors to snoop around for subjects. \nPlease be aware of Hillwood’s photographic policy linked below. It states that tripods may only be used in the gardens\, and flashes\, reflectors\, etc. are prohibited. \nhttps://hillwoodmuseum.org/visit/plan-your-visit/photography-policy \nTickets: \nVisiting Hillwood requires paid admission. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online (https://secure.hillwoodmuseum.org/events) or in person. Purchasing online ahead of time offers a small discount ($1). \nAdult: $18Senior: $15Child (6-18): $6 \nEquipment: \n\nMost subjects will not be too far away so a standard lens will suit for most compositions.\nConsider bringing a macro lens to capture some unique details in either the flowers or decorations.\nDon’t forget to bring a polarizer.\nAs mentioned in the photographic policy\, tripods are only allowed in the gardens. If you bring a tripod\, be prepared to walk back to your car and drop it off before going indoors.\nNo flash photography.\nWeather is anticipated to be comfortably warm. Restrooms are available on-site. Benches and chairs will be scattered throughout the estate.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 15\, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.Sunday\, April 16\, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (rain day) \nWhere: \nYou’ll will find our group on the edge of the parking lot leading to the visitor’s center / museum shop entrance. We’ll meet in a little out of the way spot so we can visit and enjoy each other’s company before going through admissions. \nDirections: \nHillwood Estate\, Museum & Gardens4155 Linnean Ave NWWashington\, DC 20008 \nComplimentary multi-level parking is limited so consider carpooling with your fellow club mates. Should you want to use the Metro\, the nearest stop is the Red Line’s Van Ness-UDC station. From there\, you’ll walk East for a mile past Howard University Law School and the Embassy of the Netherlands. \nCOVID precautions: \nThere is a lot to see and do at the Hillwood Estate. If you plan to tour inside the mansion or the greenhouse\, you should be aware that you will most likely pass by others who are unmasked. We’re anticipating below average risk. The Hillwood Estate is a somewhat popular destination\, but it should not be overly crowded. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy of Rena Schild and Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Library of Congress
DESCRIPTION:Our February field trip will be to the largest library in the world. The Library of Congress is not only home to over 38 million books\, 14 million photographs\, 8 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts\, the Thomas Jefferson building also happens to be DC’s most glamorously decorated interiors. \nThe Thomas Jefferson building\, as it has been known since 1980\, originally opened November 1\, 1897 and was the first public building in DC to be built with electricity installed. The Italian Renaissance inspired design was decorated by more than 40 American painters and sculptors demonstrating contemporary American culture and technological ingenuity. The secret is out and today’s 1.6 million annual visitors are frequently amazed at such a facility. Photographers will not only be inspired by the architecture\, color\, and design\, they will also find various hidden details scattered throughout. The Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson building is an amazing spectacle not to be missed. \nWe’ll visit the Jefferson Building on President’s Day when they traditionally open the Main Reading Room to the public. Although the library staff could not verify these plans\, we know there will be lots to see regardless of whether they open the Main Reading Room or not. \nPlease familiarize yourself with their photography policies: \nhttps://www.loc.gov/static/portals/visit/documents/PhotographyGuidelines.pdf \nCheck out the images from earlier field trips: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/Library-of-Congress-February-2020/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/LOC-022017/ \nTickets: \nVisiting the Library of Congress’ Jefferson Building now requires timed tickets for entry. Tickets become available 30 days in advance. To reserve your ticket\, follow the directions at the following link: \nhttps://loc.usedirect.com/LOC/ \nEquipment: \n\nMany of your images will be taken with a standard or wide angle lens. Bring a telephoto if you want to get details of some of the sculptures as many are located up high in the ceiling.\nTripods are prohibited\, leave them at home and travel light.\nNo flash photography.\nIt will be chilly outside\, but we’ll be spending most of our time indoors. Restrooms are available on-site as well as several benches you can use while you gather your inspiration.\n\nWhen: \nMonday\, February 20\, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.(no rain date) \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet outdoors\, up the first set of stairs behind the Neptune Fountain in front of the Jefferson Building. Well do our standard meet and greet at 9:30am as well as answer any questions you might have. We’ll enter the building when they open at 10am. We’ll want to get inside as soon as possible to not only escape the cold but also get in line to the main reading room. We hope to see you. \nDirections: \nLibrary of CongressThomas Jefferson Building10 First Street SEWashington\, DC 20540 \nYou’ll find free parking West of the Capitol on Maryland Ave SW near the US Botanical Gardens and another lot on Pennsylvania Ave NW between 1st and 3rd St. Both parking lots require a short uphill hike to the Jefferson Building across the street from the Capitol. \nThe Capital South metro station (blue/orange/silver) is the nearest metro stop to the library. It’s located about one and a half blocks South and should make for an excellent public transportation option. \nCOVID precautions: \nThe Library of Congress is a popular destination on President’s Day as it is one of two days a year the main reading room opens to the public. We’re anticipating increased risk considering the interior will probably be crowded. It also happens to be cold and flu season so you may want to wear a mask for some extra protection. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy Rena Schild and Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Old Post Office
DESCRIPTION:In January\, our club will visit the sites around the Old Post Office and Clock Tower. This is a wonderful winter destination for urban landscape\, architecture\, and street photography. \nWe’ll begin our tour by gathering along 12th Street NW in front of the Woodrow Wilson Plaza where some may find their first shots of the morning. Following our usual meet and greet\, we’ll move indoors to escape the cold January morning. We’ll enter the Old Post Office using the public entrance on 12th St. A hallway outlining the history of the building will lead us to an elevator that will take us to the top floor of the main building with a view of the renovated hotel atrium. The exhibit continues to the clock tower elevator where we’ll go up to witness the views from on top of the third tallest building in Washington DC. \nWhen we’re done peeping at rooftops and the outdoor temperatures have warmed up\, we’ll return to the street for some external shots including views of The Capitol down Pennsylvania Ave. We’ll also go on the hunt as we wander our way around the Woodrow Wilson Plaza picking out the nooks and crannies created by all the paths in and out. \nDepending on the outcome from our meet and greet discussions\, we may decide to visit one of the nearby restaurants for lunch. There is also an indoor food court in the Reagan building. \nA lot of renovations have occurred since our last visit in 2008: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2007-2008-Field-Trips/Oldpostoffice/ \nEquipment: \n\nStandard and wide angle lenses will work well for those who want to focus on architecture and street photography. Consider a longer lens if you want to pick out some city landscape details.\nTripods are welcome though it may be a little tight inside the clock tower.\nIt’s January in DC\, dress accordingly for outdoor exploring. Sidewalks may be icy in the morning as the low Sun will likely be blocked by buildings.\n\n When: \nSaturday\, January 21\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet near the elevator access to Federal Triangle metro along 12th Street NW. \nDirections: \nThe Old Post Office and Clock Tower (aka Waldorf Astoria) is located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue\, N.W. in Washington\, D.C.. \nThe metro has a blue/orange/silver line station (Federal Triangle) located directly across the street from the Old Post Office and should be strongly considered. \nParking and tickets: \nYou’ll find multiple parking lots off 11th St\, 12th St\, and E St. one block North. These lots can be considered pricey at $12+. \nThe Old Post Office Pavilion and Clock Tower are all free to visit and do not require tickets. \nCOVID precautions: \nThis event has a mix of indoor and outdoor photo opportunities. We anticipate the risk will be relatively low. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy of Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Smithsonian's National Zoo
DESCRIPTION:NVPS November 2022 Field TripPlease join us for an autumn morning safari around the zoo. The Smithsonian’sNational Zoo is a popular destination renowned for its wide assortment of exoticanimals. One of the best features of the National Zoo is the relatively naturalenvironments curated for each animal. Most of these photogenic animals you’ll meet are ready and willing to pose for your camera. Our task will be to capture their best in the warm morning light among the most natural backgrounds we can find. We’ll walk the outdoor exhibits starting with the Asia Trail. Then we’ll walk down Olmsted Walk (the main thoroughfare) downhill to visit the primates and Great Apes. When we’re done contemplating what it would be like if apes ruled over the Earth\, we’ll complete the downhill trek to the Great Cats exhibit to get some of our best shots of the lions and tigers. The surrounding area also offers lots to capture before we begin our hike back uphill. Traveling the American trail\, we’ll complete our loop starting with the otters and bears and finishing with the elephants. Unfortunately\, zoo staff is still working on the birdhouse which is scheduled to open in 2023. \nCheck out the results from our past field trips in 2017 and 2014:https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/Zoo/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/National-Zoo-September/ \nEquipment:· Tripods are welcome. Please be mindful of where you set up.· Bring your longest lens because some exhibits can be pretty deep. 200mm is capable\, but 300mm or higher is best to fill the frame with your subject. Those without long lenses will find subjects among the humans and smaller exhibits\, so don’t skip out. · Comfortable walking shoes for walking. The zoo is built on a hill and we’ll be covering up to two miles.·When:Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, November 13\, 2022\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nWhere:We’ll meet at the Visitor's Center just inside the Connecticut Ave. entrance. This is the best location to start our safari as it’s right next to our first destination. Please note that the outdoor zoo exhibits will be open prior to our scheduled meetup so feel free to come early and snoop around nearby exhibits. Indoor exhibits open around 9 am. \nDirections:If you plan to drive\, be aware that entrance to the parking lots is limited to Connecticut Ave. only. You cannot gain entry from the Harvard St NW entrance of the Rock Creek Pkwy. That said\, Rock Creek Pkwy is still the best road. Just take the CathedralAve NW exit before the Beach Dr. NW split. The National Zoo is metro accessible\, though it's a little extra walking. If you want to walk downhill to the zoo\, take the Red line to Cleveland Park. The Woodley Park-Zoo stop is a little closer to the main entrance\, but it requires an uphill hike. \nParking and tickets:Tickets to the zoo are free but reservations are required. Parking is free to members\, but non-members need to purchase tickets for their vehicle which will include free ticket(s) to the zoo. If you want free parking\, you will need to purchase a premiere levelmembership before you reserve your tickets to this field trip. Coordinators will monitor the weather and provide guidance by Tuesday\, November 8\, 2022\, based on weather predictions. \nCOVID precautions:This event is outdoors\, the zoo paths are generally wide\, and the zoo is limiting timed tickets to prevent enormous crowds. Masks are not required by the zoo. You are likely to come into close contact with other humans in the outdoor exhibits as well as indoors. We anticipate this event will be relatively low risk. However\, there is a high risk of fun. Should you crack a smile or laugh\, please notify your coordinators immediately of your case of euphoria. \nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023* Photographs courtesy Rena Schild and Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Eastern State Penitentiary
DESCRIPTION:Image by Jeff Hancock\nIt’s time to visit a very old favorite\, Eastern State Penitentiary. This former prison (1829-1971)\, turned museum and historic site once housed notorious criminals as bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. \nThe prison is modeled after a hub and spoke plan. Vaulted cell blocks resemble the church nave while the cells themselves were designed for isolation and penance. Photographically\, this destination offers architecture\, decrepit walls\, peeling paint\, and crumbling sky-lit cells. Visit the barber’s chairs (two of them)\, the surgery\, medical wing\, and more. \nPhotography policy: https://www.easternstate.org/visit/site-rentals/photography-filmmaking \nCheck out the results from our past field trips in 2019 and 2015:https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/FieldTrips-2018-2019/Eastern-State-Penitentiary-April/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/Eastern-State/ \nImage by Bill Millhouser\nEquipment: \n\nTripods are permissible provided you have paid for the photography equipment pass with your admission.\nWide angle lenses are ideal\, but considering the narrow spaces\, an ultra-wide will also work well for certain architectural shots.\nComfortable walking shoes for walking. The interior is surprisingly long\, but the facility does offer the occasional bench to pause.\nBuildings do not have climate controls so dress accordingly to the outdoor season.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, September 24\, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m*No rain date scheduled \nWhere: \nImage by Steve Glintz\n2027 Fairmount Avenue\, Philadelphia\, PA 19130 \nDriving time will be nearly 3 hours and will pass through tolls for tunnels through Baltimore and the JFK Memorial Hwy. (non-MD E-ZPass tolls estimated at $3×2 + $8) \nOur group will gather outside the main entrance across from OCF Coffee House (opposite to the corner at Fairmount Ave and N. 21st St.) for some socializing. Arrive early for a bit of coffee and pastries at the a fore mentioned coffee house. \nOnce paid\, we’re free to roam the facility. Please consider joining us for lunch at 1pm. We’ll decide on the location\, which will be on Fairmount Ave within one block of the prison. \n“Restrooms on site are limited to a three-stall restroom trailer with flush toilets and running water (located near the start of your tour) and two port-a-potties (located near The Big Graph at the end of the main tour route)” – https://www.easternstate.org/safety \nParking and tickets: \nImage by Georgette Grossman\nFree parallel parking on streets around the block that border Eastern State have a 3 hour limit. Be sure to read the street signs as spots opposite the side bordering Eastern State are not free. Do not anticipate parking in this zone for more than 3 hours (even if you find another spot on the block)\, you will get a ticket. \nThere’s also a parking lot in the adjacent block (between N.23rd and N.22nd Streets). For $14\, you can park here for up to 12 hours. \nAdmission tickets are $17 ($15 seniors\, $13 students). There is a $2 surcharge if buying your tickets in person. Photography equipment pass (admission for your tripod): $10. If we can muster 15+ members we can get $11 tickets ($10 seniors\, $8 students) and $5 equipment passes. ** \n** If you are attending\, please email fieldtrips (contact information can be found at Board Contacts) by Saturday September 10h. Steven will keep a tally on the members who have signed up and notify everyone via email on Tuesday September 13th if we have met the minimum requirements and who has signed up. Only members on Steven’s list will be eligible for the discounted admissions on the day of the field trip. If your name is not on the list\, please contact Steven directly (instructions will be provided). \nImage by Steven Glintz\nCOVID precautions: \nThere are photogenic locations both indoors and out. We are not anticipating huge crowds\, but some indoor spaces are narrow so you may be in close contact with people outside your normal bubble. With variants of the virus on the rise\, you may want to carry a face covering just in case. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy of Steven Glintz\, Georgette Grossman\, Jeff Hancock\, Bill Millhouser\, and Mike Whalen \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage by Mike Whalen\n\n\n\nImage by Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Montgomery County Fair
DESCRIPTION:Let’s finish the summer at the Montgomery County Fair. Veterans of this field trip will remember the fun around the animals before sundown followed by the excitement of the carnival. The highlights for this year’s field trip will be focused on street photography at night and the colorful light-trails of the carnival. However\, if you join the group earlier in the day\, you’ll also get the chance to explore the photography exhibit\, capture images of the animals\, and the old timers agriculture equipment displays. In years past there has also been a tent with owls and raptors so who knows what you’ll find this year. \nCheck out the results from our past field trips in 2019 and 2013:https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/Montgomery-County-Fair-August/https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2013-2014-Field-Trips/Montgomery-County-Fair-August-2013/ \nEquipment: \n\nTripods are essential for after dark photography. You’ll want to find spots that are not heavy in pedestrian traffic.\nWide angle lenses in the range 24-70 will work great\, but you will also want to bring something with just a little extra reach (70-200) for events and longer range candid photography.\nComfortable walking shoes for walking.\nProtection from the afternoon sun such as sunscreen and a hat.\nA little spending cash for diner and snacks.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, August 13\, 2022 from 4 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.Rain date on Sunday\, August 14\, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. \nFair’s Website: mcagfair.com \nWhere: \nWe’ll meetup at 4pm in the racing park near the racing pigs course on Hickory Ave. We’ll socialize a bit before exploring the agriculture fair and photography exhibit. On this end of the fair\, you’ll find animal exhibits\, old timer agriculture equipment displays\, and more. \nAt 6pm\, we’ll reconvene for diner at the corner of Maple Ave. and Red Oak St. outside the Old MacDonald’s Barn (the red barn). We’ll find benches and tables here while we send out groups to gather food. When the sun sets and we’ve had our fill\, we’ll walk down to the midway and carnival for some street photography at night and colorful light-trails. \nParking and tickets: \nOnsite parking is $10 per car. There should be plenty of parking\, but anticipate some heavy traffic. Car-pooling is a good option. \nFree parking with shuttle (ie school) bus is also available from the Odendhal Ave parking lot at Lakeforest Mall. \nTickets are $12 online\, $15 at the gate. \nCOVID precautions: \nAlthough this event is outdoors\, you will find yourself among larger crowds. With variants of the virus on the rise\, you may want to carry a face covering just in case. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023 \n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Smithsonian Folklife Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival returns for 2022. Every year\, the Smithsonian organizes a festival on The Mall inviting people from around the world to share their cultures at our nation’s Capitol. This festival is a cornerstone event on The Mall. It’s recognized as the largest annual cultural event in the US capital and ranks among other top events like the World Expo. This is one festival you don’t want to miss. Best of all\, it’s FREE. \nEach year\, the Smithsonian Folklife festival has two themes and several special evening concerts. This year’s themes are the United Arab Emirates (https://festival.si.edu/2022/uae) and Earth Optimism (https://festival.si.edu/2022/earth-optimism). Based on years past\, you can expect to witness craftsman\, music\, dance\, story-telling\, and other amazing demonstrations that will blow your socks off. At the time of this writing the festival calendar has not been posted. \nThe festival runs daily 11am to 6pm from June 22-27 and June 30 until July 4\, 2022. \nIn the past\, the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building hosted the marketplace for the festival\, however\, there is no word that will be happening this year. \nEquipment: \n\nTripods on The Mall are allowed\, but with the crowd and your own mobility in mind\, you probably want to leave the tripod at home.\nLenses in the range 24-70 will capture much of the action but don’t forget to bring a longer lens\, 70-200\, for staged events and presentations.\nComfortable walking shoes for walking.\nProtection from the sun such as sunscreen and a hat.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, June 25\, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p. mRain date on Sunday\, June 26\, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet outside the Smithsonian Metro Stop on The Mall (not the exit on the corner of 12th St. SW and Independence Ave SW). This location is also traditionally the location for the festival’s information booth so it may be a little busy. We’ll try to find a spot within 50 feet that is away from the crowd so we’re easy to spot. \nStreet parking will be difficult East of the Washington Monument. Garage parking will probably run you $20-$35. You’ll find them within one block North of Constitution Ave. and one block South of Independence Ave. The parking lot run by the National Park Service at the Tidal Basin may offer a few spots\, but those spots are time limited (3 hours max). \nMetro will be your best bet. The convenience and accessibility of the metro to this event cannot be overstated. Bring a mask and some personal sanitizer. The Smithsonian stop is served by the Blue\, Orange\, and Silver lines. \nCOVID precautions: \nAlthough this event is outdoors\, you may find yourself among larger crowds. With variants of the virus on the rise\, you may want to carry a face covering just in case. If you decide to take public transit\, you’ll probably want to mask up as well. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz taken from 2016-2018 (https://festival.si.edu/past-programs)

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:If you missed our Fall 2020 trip to visit the Monuments at Night\, you’re in luck. Our April field trip will return to the monuments at (or just after) peak cherry blossom season. Lots of photographers visit this time of year\, but what many don’t know is that the monuments are best viewed after sunset. This is a wonderful trip for all levels of photographers\, especially beginners. \nWhat: \nThe cherry blossoms will be well underway and Spring will be in the air. We’ll visit the World War II Memorial\, Vietnam War Memorials\, Korean War Memorial\, Lincoln Memorial and other nearby sites. Feel free to see and do as much as you want. There really is too much to see in one night. \nPlease note\, the National Cherry Blossom Festival will be in full swing. In fact\, there is a parade on the morning of April 9 (10am) along Constitution Ave. There is also a street festival on Pennsylvania Ave between 3rd and 7th St. until 6pm. Our activities will not be impacted\, but this could impede your chances at getting the perfect parking spot. \nTripods inside the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial are prohibited. Tripods are allowed in most outdoor areas\, however\, if a park ranger asks you to move or pick up your tripod\, it will be because you’re set up in a high traffic area. \nSunset is at 7:40 p.m. (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nSturdy tripod\nLeave your super telephotos and fast glass at home.\nRemote shutter or cable release will be useful to prevent camera shake.\nGraduated filters are optional for sunset shots.\nFlash and or flashlight is optional.\nYour best walking shoes.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, April 9\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p. mRain date on Sunday\, April 10\, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet at the World War II Memorial for what we hope will be a wonderful sunset behind the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool. When that’s done\, we’ll travel West along the Reflecting Pool to visit the Vietnam War Memorials\, Lincoln Memorial\, and Korean War Memorial. We’ll also go behind the Lincoln Memorial to view the newly rehabilitated Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Rosslyn skyline. \nIf there is enough interest\, Steve will be willing to lead another another group from our meeting spot at the WW2 Memorial to the Tidal Basin visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial\, FDR Memorial\, and finish at the Jefferson Memorial. \nMetered parking is in effect from 7am-8pm on Ohio Dr. SW. The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total). Please note that the cherry blossom festival will still be going on so the parking lot at the Tidal Basin Paddle Boats will probably be filled with equipment and closed to the public. The parking lots A\, B\, and C along Ohio Dr just past the 14 St. overpass should be an option. The metro blue and orange lines will also service Smithsonian and Foggy Bottom which are the nearest stops to our field trip. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy Rena Schild and Steven Glintz. Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS galleries. \nField Trip: DC Monuments\, Sep 2020Field-Trip: DC at Night\, Dec 2014

SUMMARY:Field Trip: National Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:When the sun is low in the winter\, it’s a great time of year to visit the National Cathedral. It’s a literal photographic gold mine. On a sunny day the light creates a dynamic and colorful environment indoors that is unmatched. The National Cathedral also features beautiful and unique Gothic revival architecture outdoors. There are lots of details to discover here\, and I’m happy to see they have reopened recently after closing for COVID. \nAdvanced tickets cost $15 for adults ($10 for seniors and military). We’ll be going rain\, snow\, or shine. We’re hoping for the best possible weather. \nWhat: \nIt’s been almost 11 years since the earthquake\, but repairs continue to the outside of the cathedral. You will likely see scaffolding on the South side of the cathedral and around the top of the center tower. The grounds surrounding the cathedral\, including the Bishop’s Garden\, are freely accessible to explore; however\, tickets are required if you want to go in. \nInside you will find the rose windows over the north\, south\, and west entrances. The north side doesn’t get as much light this time of year\, but the other sides more than make up for that. The south arcade will be the brightest. The light shining through the stained-glass windows lasts well into the early afternoon and moves from the opposite wall to the floor and then to the adjacent wall. The unique light shining through the stained-glass window near the statue of George Washington (southwest corner of the nave\, just to the right as you enter the nave) can’t be missed either. \nAs this is a working church\, please be respectful to others who may be there on ‘business’. Shy your camera away from parishioners to respect their privacy. Normally\, the cathedral offers a noontime service. If there is a service and you are in the nave\, you may be asked to stop taking pictures. This is normal. Try exploring the downstairs\, towers\, or going outside for the next 30-45 minutes. \nSteven Glintz did his first portfolio on the National Cathedral. He later self-published a much larger body of work\, but the portfolio can be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/PortfolioProject/2017-2018/Steveglintz/ \nAdditional images from our club’s last visit in 2020 can also be seen on our website: https://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2019-2020-Field-Trips/National-Cathedral-January-2020/ \nEquipment: \n\nA 24-70mm should easily capture most indoor shots\, however a 70-300mm can be useful to reach finer details higher up. You may also find use for a 12-24mm\, but I’ve only used mine a couple times here.\nTripods are allowed\, but caution is recommended. The church asks you not to place your tripod in doorways\, stairways\, or any other position that blocks the way.\nMasks are required indoors.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, February 12\, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. No rain date is scheduled. \nRemember\, advanced tickets are required if you want to go inside. Get your Sightseeing Admission tickets online for the field trip date at this link: https://tix.cathedral.org/TheatreManager/1/online?performance=25071 \nYou can see other ticketed events at the cathedral here: https://tix.cathedral.org/TheatreManager/1/login?event=0 \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet at 10 a.m. outside the northwest corner of the cathedral near Wisconsin Ave. by the elevator to the underground parking. There is plenty of underground parking for $9; however\, you may find free parking along Wisconsin Ave. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n*Photos by Steven Glintz

Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly\, VA is part of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum. The museum is housed in a giant hanger providing ample indoor space to move about and explore. \nThis is a space for photographers who want to play and experiment. You’ll find static displays\, but as a photographer\, you can add motion by dragging that shutter. If geometry is your thing\, you’ll find lots of circles\, curves\, lines\, and other ways of assembling your composition. The materials of the exhibits range from shiny to colorful challenging the photographer to find interesting abstract distortions and or unique color and geometric shapes. There are a lot of creative outlets so take your time and study the subjects that interest you. \nWhat: \nThe Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum is located adjacent to Dulles International Airport. The hanger exhibits full size aircraft including the Space Shuttle Discovery\, SR-71a Blackbird\, the B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay”\, and more. Unfortunately\, there is a closed off area of the hanger under construction / renovation this year. That means the general aviation and WW2 aviation exhibits will be impacted. However\, the commercial aviation exhibit\, cold war era exhibit\, and space hanger are still open. (I’m not certain if the x-wing is still in the restoration hanger or if it’s been moved to Washington DC yet. Take a peek from the visitor overlook walkway upstairs.) \nAs per the Smithsonian website (https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center/visiting-tips) The use of tripods\, monopods\, and selfie sticks are prohibited. Leave that weight at home and walk around in comfort. Masks are also required while indoors. \nAlso be aware that there is no food currently sold onsite and food and drink is prohibited inside (bottled water is okay). If you want lunch\, you’ll have to take a short car ride to eateries South on Rt.28 (exits Rt.50\, Willard Rd.\, or Westfields Blvd. all within a couple miles)\, but your original parking pass should get you back in without having to pay again. \nAdditional examples of our club’s work can be found online: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/FieldTrips-2018-2019/Udvar-Hazy-Museum-February/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2016-2017/Udvar-Hazy-2017/ \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/Udvar-Hazy/ \n(Honestly\, I didn’t realize we as a club\, visit every other year. It’s a fun place to go on a winter day.) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well. However\, some of the objects hanging from the roof may require 300mm if you want to fill the frame. You can probably leave the macro lens at home.\nNo tripods allowed\nMasks required indoors\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, January 22\, 2021 from 10:00am – 1:00pmNo rain date because it doesn’t rain indoors! \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet inside the museum\, outside the museum shop on the left after you pass through the entrance and security. \nParking is $15 onsite\, however\, you can carpool from nearby parking lots to share the cost. I used to work at 14000 Lincoln Park Dr. Herndon (now Raytheon) and that has a huge open parking lot with easy access to the road leading to the museum parking lot. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n***All photos are provided by Alan Goldstein

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Capitol Hill Christmas Tree
DESCRIPTION:***Rescheduled to Sunday December 12th due to Saturday weather forecast of wet and windy*** \nThere’s nothing like getting into the holiday spirit than by visiting a giant tree decorated with lights. In December\, we’ll visit the Capital Christmas Tree and surrounding area for an evening of photographic creativity. There will be urban landscapes\, architecture\, light painting and more. The monuments on the East side of the Mall are great at night. \nWhat: \nPhoto Credit: Rena Schild\nThe Capital Dome and Christmas tree will be our primary subjects\, however\, there’s lots of goodies around Capital Hill so feel free to explore the area. The US Botanical Garden will also have their own outdoor holiday display (https://www.usbg.gov/plan-your-holiday-visit) that will be open until 5pm. And don’t forget about the East side of the Capital Dome. If it’s a wet evening\, you’ll likely find interesting (and fun) puddles on the pavement in front of the East side of the Capital. Across 1st St. you have both the Library of Congress and Supreme Court for even more subjects. If the Capital Dome is your thing\, maybe also check out the Upper and Lower Senate Park and look South for the dome. There’s lots to see and do. \nSunset 4:47 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\nMost any lens with a range of 24-200mm will serve you well\, but other ranges will also work if you want to bring more glass. Maybe leave the super telephoto at home. You don’t want to attract too much attention.\nGenerally speaking\, Capital police won’t allow tripods except on the land around the Christmas tree. National Park police are more forgiving. If things are busy at the outdoor botanical garden display\, don’t be surprised if someone asks you not to use a tripod. Politely accept their request and consider it permission to be more creative.\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, December 11\, 2021 from 4:00pm – 7:30pmRain date on Sunday\, December 12\, 2021 from 4:00pm – 7:30pm \nWhere: \nPhoto Credit: Steven Glintz\nThere should be plenty of free parking at the end of Maryland Ave. (near the US Botanical Gardens). If that lot is full\, try for the other lot at the end of Pennsylvania Ave. If you’re still out of luck\, there is limited parking to the North along Louisiana Ave. (on the way to Union Station). \nWe’ll meet in front of the US Botanical Gardens building at 4:00pm. That gives us an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company prior to the photo shoot. It also gives us the option to capture a sunset if one materializes. If you arrive early to explore the US Botanical Garden’s outdoor display\, please take a break and say “Hi\,” we’d love hear from you. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe photos below are by Steven Glintz.

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Harper’s Ferry
DESCRIPTION:Many parts of West Virginia peak their fall colors in the first few weeks of October. We’ll be visiting Harper’s Ferry after what would be considered peak season\, but that’s okay. The sun will be lower in the sky and that can help accentuate textures and create interesting light and shadows in and around town. This field trip may be a black and white photographer’s bread and butter\, so to speak. \nWhat: \nPhoto Credit: David Crooks\nArchitecture photographers may find St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church interesting. The church appears to be open now so feel free to go inside. Landscape photographers may find sweeping vista shots from locations higher up like Jefferson Rock. Those same photographers looking for more of a workout may try for the Maryland Heights trail (accessible via B&O Railroad Bridge) which takes you to a commanding view of the town. The trail takes a few hours to complete\, but it can be rewarding. Of course\, there’s all the alley ways and nooks and crannies around the downtown area. There are lots of attractions just outside town as well including Piney Run Waterfall at Potoma Wayside Park so consider snooping around the area before you leave for the day. For this field trip\, we’ll concentrate around downtown. \nSunrise 6:52 a.m. (EST)Sunset 4:58 p.m. (EST) \nEquipment: \n\n24-70mm is my favorite walk about lens and will serve you well in these conditions.\n70-200mm is another favorite for landscapes\, candid street photography\, and detail shots.\nTripods are welcome\nBring a mask if you plan to use the shuttle or go into any buildings. You can bring water or buy a bottle from a shop.\n\nPhoto Credit: Mike Whalen\nWhen: \nSaturday\, November 13\, 2021 from 9:30am – 12pmRain date on Sunday\, November 14\, 2021 from 9:30am – 12pm \nWhere: \nWe’ll gather at Arsenal Square at 9:30am. The drive from Alexandria to Harper’s Ferry is about 80 minutes by way of I-495\, I-270\, and Rt.340. \nUnlike many other parks operated by the NPS\, Harper’s Ferry has an entrance fee of $20 per car ($10 per individual). You can also get in with a Harpers Ferry Annual Pass ($35) or an Annual (aka inter-agency) Park Pass ($80\, with discounts for Seniors and Military). \nSee https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm for more information on passes. \nLimited parking is available downtown. Your best bet may be the train station parking lot which hosts 80 spots\, but that lot will fill up fast. There are smaller lots along Shenandoah St. (Alt.Rt.340)\, but if memory serves\, that involves a lot of walking to get to the good stuff. Alternatively\, you can park at the Visitor’s Center (171 Shoreline Drive\, Harpers Ferry\, WV 25425) and ride the shuttle which should let you out near our meetup spot. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n\n\nPhoto Credit: David CrooksPhoto Credit: Mike Whalen

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Summit Point Raceway
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE (9/7/21): Summit Point has agreed to waive entrance fees for NVPS members and asks in exchange that we provide some of our best shots to use for social media (with credit). We would like to supply a list of the members who will attend and ask you to email the field-trip coordinators (contact information can be found at Board Contacts) by Thursday\, September 16\, 2021 if you will attend. \nUPDATE (9/7/21): The Drift Nirvana event has been moved to another date but there will still be an exciting motorcycle event on September 19. The Porsche Club of America event will also take place and\, although private\, can apparently be seen through the gate. \n\n \nPhoto Credit: Kevin Egan \nBrush up on your panning skills and get ready for some high speed fun! We’re heading to Summit Point Motorsports Park for some car and motorcycle action. Summit Point has three tracks and there will be events on all three: (1) Drift Nirvana 2.0\, in which cars “drift\,” or skid\, leaving smoke in their wakes; (2) a motorcycle event; and (3) a Porsche Club of America event. This will be a chance to get the cars and motorcycles in focus with a nice background blur or get some nice motion blur on the vehicles. We should also be able to get close-ups of cars and motorcycles. \nWhat: \nSummit Point Motorsports Park is a road racing and driver training facility located in Summit Point\, WV. It is about a 1.25 hour drive from Merrifield\, Virginia. \nThe events are as follows: \n\nSummit Point Circuit: Porsche Club of America Potomac – Rock the Summit (private)\nPotomac Pad: Drift Nirvana – Team V2.0\nShenandoah Circuit: Evolve GT Track Days (motorcycles)\n\n Equipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. \nTripods can be used but are not necessary\nBring water\, snacks and sunscreen (there are restrooms and a snack bar)\nA travel chair can be used since no one is permitted on the bleachers\n*A reflective vest is required and we must supply our own. They can be purchased from Amazon for $13\n\nWaivers will need to be signed in order to be on the grounds \nWhen:Sunday\, September 19\, 2021 from 8:30 am – 12 p.m. \nEvents normally run from 9 a.m. to 12 or 1 p.m.\, but there may be an afternoon session so you may opt to stay for the day. The Shenandoah Circuit is subject to a “quiet hour” for church from 11 a.m. – noon. \nThe Drift Nirvana fee is $10/spectator. There is usually no charge for the motorcycle event and the Porsche event is private (and no charge)\, but you can see it from outside the gate. \nWhere:We’ll meet in the parking lot of the red building just beyond the entrance to the park at 8:30 a.m. so we can be positioned for the 9 a.m. start times. There appear to be two entrances on Motorsports Park Circle. We will meet at the first one off Summit Point Road. You should see the building immediately after turning onto Motorsports Park Circle. \nThe rules and regulations for the park are here: \nhttps://summitpoint-raceway.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Park-Rules-and-Regulations.pdf \nSummit Point Motorsports Park201 Motorsports Park CircleSummit Point\, WV 25446 \n We hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Marines with the Silent Drill Platoon march for “Pass in Review” during a Tuesday Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial\, Arlington\, Va.\, June 8\, 2021. The hosting official for the evening was Mr. Robert D. Hogue\, counsel for the Commandant of the Marine Corps\, and The Honorable Kirsten E. Gillibrand\, U.S. Senator for New York\, was the guest of honor. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jason Kolela)\nYour field trip coordinators are excited to bring you this summer-time field trip. The Sunset Parade occurs every Tuesday evening from late May to early August at the Marine Corps War Memorial. This free event provides an opportunity to listen to “The Commandant’s Own” US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and witness the precision drills performed by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. \nWhen the show is over\, there are even more opportunities to capture iconic shots of the Lincoln Memorial\, Washington Monument\, and US Capitol Dome from the base of the Netherlands Carillon. I also feel the Marine Corps War Memorial is a very photogenic subject too. \nWhat: \nThe Army has their Golden Knights. The Navy has their Blue Angles. The Air Force has their Thunderbirds. Only the Marine Corps has a land based performance such as this. Let the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps and Silent Drill Platoon impress you with a demonstration of their skills and training. Did I mention it’s FREE? \nThe performance starts at 6:45pm and runs for one hour. After the performance\, I highly recommend the short 5 minute walk South to the base of the Netherlands Carillon to get some iconic shots of the Washington monuments lined up. Then when you’re done with that\, why not go back to the Marine Corps War Memorial and take some shots around there. I find that monument very photogenic\, especially after sunset. \nMasks are not required to attend provided you’ve been fully vaccinated. It’s difficult to judge how many people will attend these performances\, but I the memorial sits on a large plot of land so outdoor physical distancing should be possible. \nMore information is found on the USMC website: https://www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/Sunset-Parade/ \nand here: https://dcphotoguide.com/marine-corps-sunset-parade-iwo-jima-memorial/ \nSunset is expected at 8:17 p.m. (EDT) \nMaster GySgt. Keith Martinez\, drum major\, “The Commandant’s Own\,” U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps\, conducts the Marines during a Tuesday Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial\, Arlington\, VA\, June 15\, 2021. The hosting official for the evening was Brig. Gen. Lorna Mahlock\, Director\, Information\, Command\, Control\, Communications and Computers\, and Ms. Gwynne Shotwell\, President and Chief Operations Officer of SpaceX\, was the guest of honor. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jason Kolela)\nEquipment: \n\n24-70 will give you a nice wide shot with the memorial\, but I suspect you’ll get more use out of a 70-200 for full size individuals and small group shots.\nConsider bringing longer lenses of 300-500mm to get in tight. Marines like to keep the audience at a safe distance and you might want that extra reach.\nI did not see guidance on USMC website regarding flashes\, but I would ask that you leave the flash at home. Hopefully\, there will be plenty of glorious warm sunset light that comes naturally without distraction.\nTripods are permissible provided they do not impede on the enjoyment of others.\nBring a mask (to keep on hand). Bug spray for those pesky evening gnats. And a water bottle because it will be warm and humid.\nSeating is not available\, just plenty of grass. Lawn chairs and folding stools are permissible.\n\nWhen: \nTuesday\, August 3\, 2021 from 6pm – 9pmRain date on Tuesday\, August 10\, 2021 from 6pm – 9pm \nWhere: \nLet’s meet in the NW edge of the USMC War Memorial grounds next to the visitor parking lot (38.8910\, -77.0706). \nThere may be porta potties nearby\, but no other facilities will be available at the memorial. \nParking at the memorial is not available on Tuesday nights. You may get lucky from the limited street parking in the neighborhoods North or West of the memorial. However there are plenty of paid parking options between the memorial and the Roslyn metro station that will get you within a couple blocks. \nYou may also consider using the Roslyn metro station and walking about three blocks (10-15 minutes). The Arlington Cemetery metro station also stops nearby a bike path that will wind your way to the memorial (sounds tricky). \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022 \n*Color photographs courtesy Sgt. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Photo By: Rena Schild \nWe’re back with this club favorite\, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. NVPS frequently visits this destination at this time of year because the lotus flowers and water lilies are in bloom. If you haven’t got your flower shot for next season’s themed competition\, here is a great opportunity. If you’re not into flowers\, consider the opportunities to capture images of dragon flies\, birds\, turtles\, frogs\, and more. \nWhat: \nKenilworth Aquatic Gardens is home to heron\, birds\, dragon flies\, and amphibians. You’ll also notice the rather obvious shallow ponds filled with lotus and water lilies. \nYou’re welcome to wander along the paths that separate the ponds in search of your next image. When you’re done \nPhoto By: Steven Glintz \nwith the lotus and lilies\, you can take the boardwalk at the far end of the park out to a viewing platform where along the way you can typically find herons and other birds. \nThis is a very popular destination at this time of year. Please be patient and locate your subjects while maintaining social distancing from other photographers. The National Park Service warns that if the park becomes too crowded they may temporarily close the park gates to limit people on site. \nSunrise is expected at 5:52 a.m. (EDT) \nPhoto By: Rena Schild \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 24-200mm will satisfy most needs. Those with an interest in birding may want to bring a lens with 300+mm range. A macro lens may also come in handy if you are interested in dragon flies.\nDon’t forget your polarizer and diffuser/reflector.\nTripods are allowed everywhere.\nBring a mask\, the National Park Service requires them.\nBug/tick spray and sunscreen.\nWater – the weather is expected to be very hot and humid.\n\nPhoto By: Steven Glintz \nWhen: \nSaturday\, July 10\, 2021 from 8am – 11am\nRain date on Sunday\, July 11\, 2021 from 8am – 11am \nWhere: \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot to share any updated news. It’s only a couple minutes walk to the gardens. \nPlease note\, the visitor center\, restrooms\, and water fountain will be closed. There will be porta potties. \nKenilworth Aquatic Gardens\n1550 Anacostia Avenue\, NE\nWashington DC 20019 \nParking is free. \nWe hope you can join us! \nRena Schild and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2021-2022

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Shenandoah National Park\, Big Meadow
DESCRIPTION:The drive to the Big Meadows inside Shenandoah National Park from Fairfax is just over two hours. This area has been chosen for its wildlife\, landscapes\, waterfalls and other diverse nature photography opportunities. It also happens to be one of the best destinations we can occupy to avoid COVID.\n\nJune is a particularly fortunate time as the fawns should be out frolicking with mamma doe. The trails surrounding Big Meadows campgrounds have also frequently reported black bears. The nearby waterfalls may not have as strong a flow\, but they should also provide unique opportunities for those who are looking for a hike to go with their photography. Others will find many opportunities to pull off the side of Skyline Drive to find inspirations a few hundred feet from the side of the road. (Skyline Drive is about 106 miles long and takes about 3 hours to drive. Add in frequent stops and you’re looking at a better part of a full day of shooting.)\n\nThe Shenandoah Valley also makes for a spectacular subject should conditions present themselves for a sunset shot or nighttime astro-photography. In fact\, this field trip offers so much to photograph that you might just want to include an overnight stay at the Big Meadows Lodge or at a nearby accommodation.\n\nBig Meadows Lodge\nSkyline Drive Mile 51\nShenandoah Natl Park\, VA 22835\n\nhttps://www.goshenandoah.com/lodging/big-meadows-lodge\n\nNote: new COVID cancellation policies include no-charge cancellations “by 4:00 pm EDT 2 days before the scheduled arrival date.”\n\nWhat:\n\nAs mentioned above\, this destination is abundant in all things wild\, from wildlife to wildflowers. On June 12 (or June 13 in case of rain)\, we’ll meet in the afternoon at the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center to plan our late afternoon photography activities. From there\, we’ll decide if it’s best to trek the Big Meadows loop trail across the road for deer\, explore the campground trails for bears\, or start the landscape hunt early. We’ve timed this field-trip in hopes of capturing the fawns and cubs that inhabit the Big Meadows area\, but there are opportunities for other nature inspired photography you may not want to miss.\n\nSunrise is expected at 5:49 a.m. (EDT)\nSunset is expected at 8:38 p.m. (EDT)\n\nMilky Way will be visible for most of the night.\n\nMoon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase (4%\, New moon on June 10) https://www.moongiant.com/calendar/june/2021/\n\n\nEquipment:\n\n Any lens between 18-200mm will satisfy most landscape needs. For wildlife captures\, I recommend 300mm+. Wildlife are accustomed to humans\, but you still need to keep your distance.\n Astro-photographers should bring fast wide angle lenses.\n( f/5.6 okay\, f/4 better\, f/2.8 even better )\n I never leave the house without a polarizer. Bring your other neutral density and graduated filters to help balance your exposures.\n Tripods are allowed everywhere.\n Don’t forget a spare battery and memory card(s).\n Bring a light jacket for higher altitude temperatures and comfortable shoes.\n Bring a mask and some personal hand sanitizer\n\nRemember\, fuel is available near the visitor center\, but it can be a bit expensive. Be sure to fuel up prior to entering the park as there only three gas stations along the drive (milepost 24\, milepost 51\, and milepost 79).\n\nWhen:\n\nSaturday\, June 12\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\nRain date on Sunday\, June 13\, 2021 from 3pm – 8pm\n\nWhere:\n\nWe will meet outside the Harry F. Byrd\, Sr. Visitor Center (main parking lot) at 4pm for a meet and greet. We’ll also discuss the conditions and review plans for the late afternoon and evening.\n\nThe visitor center will be staffed outside by rangers from 9am – 5pm. The building itself is not expected to be open. Restrooms are expected to be open at the visitor center.\n\nParking is free at the visitor center\, however Shenandoah National Park charges a fee to enter.\n\n $30 / car provides unlimited entry for the vehicle and all passengers for the next seven days.\n $0 if you have either a Shenandoah Annual Pass or America the Beautiful (aka inter-agency pass)\n\nWe hope you can join us!\n\nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021\n\n*Wildlife photos by Stan Bysshe\n*Landscape photos by Alan Goldstein

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Brookside Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Brookside Gardens is part of the Wheaton Regional Park and is operated by Montgomery Parks. This award-winning 50-acre public display garden has a wide array of subjects to satisfy the landscape and garden photographer. The location boasts excellent water features such as a small pond with reflection terrace and a Japanese tea house\, a brook connecting the pond to Pine Lake (further south)\, and an aquatic garden. May and early June are especially colorful months for Maryland and Virginia so we can expect many of the various gardens maintained by the park to be in full bloom. \nAdmission to the gardens is free and no permits are required for non-commercial photographers. Brookside Gardens asks that photographers not disturb the gardens\, block paths\, or interfere with other visitors’ enjoyment of the gardens. (Brookside Gardens Photo Policy) \nWhat: \nThis outdoor venue will give us a very colorful way of keeping our social distancing up while we ride out the COVID variants. We’ll meet at the visitor’s center where we can say hello and get caught up. Groups can break off to start capturing wider landscape shots found by walking south of the visitor’s center (follow trails leading to your right). Or if you’re more inclined to start working the garden vignettes\, follow the trails east of the visitor’s center (generally trails that lead to the left). Either way\, you can’t lose. \nUnfortunately\, the conservatory building is closed. That means there will be no access to the greenhouse or the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit. When they reopen\, it is recommended you return and pay the small fee to enter. \nSunrise is expected at 5:56 a.m (EDT) \nEquipment: \n\nAny lens between 18-200mm should satisfy most needs. A macro lens is also recommended.\nTripods are allowed provided they don’t destroy the gardens or get in the way of other visitors.\nHandheld toys such as lights\, crystal balls\, reflectors\, and diffusers are welcome (keep a low profile to avoid any suspicions that we know what we’re doing).\n\nWhen: \nSaturday\, May 15\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.\nRain date on Sunday\, May 16\, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. \nThe visitor’s center opens at 10a.m. \nWhere: \n1800 Glenallan Avenue\nWheaton\, MD 20902 \nWe will meet outside the visitor’s center (main parking lot) at 7a.m. for a brief meet and greet. \nPlenty of free parking is available at the main entrance/visitor’s center. Additional parking is also available at the conservatory entrance on Glenallen Avenue. \nWe hope you can join us! \nTammy Tideswell and Steven Glintz\nField Trip Coordinators 2020-2021 \n \n* Photographs courtesy of Rena Schild.
