SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Monuments at Night
DESCRIPTION:NVPS May 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\nVisiting the nation’s monuments at night is the best time of the day to experience them. Our May field trip will return to this favorite where we’ll have the opportunity to photograph the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool at sunset. We’ll also photograph the World War II Memorial and Washington Monument at the blue hour and tour the other monuments as time permits including the Vietnam War Memorial\, Korean War Memorial\, and more. This is a wonderful field trip for all levels\, especially beginners as most shots are done using manual controls. However\, there is far too much to see in one night so be prepared to return on your own. \n\n\n\nTripods are allowed in most outdoor areas\, however\, if a park ranger asks you to move or pick up your tripod\, it will be because you’re set up in a high traffic area. Tripods are not allowed anywhere inside of or on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or Jefferson Memorial. \n\n\n\nSunset is at 8:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nLenses in the range 24-200 will be most useful.\n\n\n\nGraduated filters are a great tool for capturing sunsets.\n\n\n\nA sturdy tripod along with remote shutter / cable release will be useful to keep the camera steady for long exposures.\n\n\n\nFlash and or flashlight is optional.\n\n\n\nWear your best walking shoes.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 17\, 2025 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p. m \n\n\n\nRain date on Sunday\, May 18\, 2025 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet next to 17 St. SW at the World War II Memorial. We’ll chat\, assess the weather\, and coordinate the evening’s schedule based on participant interests. If the weather cooperates\, we’ll photograph the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool set in front of a wonderful sunset. During the blue hour\, we’ll photograph the World War II Memorial itself and the Washington Monument. Then we’ll walk toward the Lincoln Memorial and stop at any memorials along the way. We’ll finish our field trip at the Lincoln Memorial which will provide us views of the Washington Monument and Capitol Hill as well as the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Rosslyn skyline. Members not interested in the sunset photo-op or extensive walking will be able to meet up with the group at the Lincoln Memorial after 9pm. \n\n\n\nMetered parking is normally in effect from 7am-8pm on Ohio Dr. SW. The cost is $2.30 per hour with a three hour maximum ($6.90 total). However\, reports indicate construction in the area and street parking on 22nd Street NW (next to Einstein statue) might be a better alternative. The parking lots A\, B\, and C along Ohio Dr just past the 14 St. overpass are also an option.  \n\n\n\nThose who wish to ride the metro will be able to use blue and orange lines servicing Foggy Bottom and Smithsonian stations which are the nearest stops on our field trip. Note that the blue line’s Arlington National Cemetery station may be a good alternate but it closes at 10pm. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025 \n\n\n\n* Photographs of the monuments courtesy Steven Glintz.  Additional examples and inspiration available on NVPS galleries: \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2021-2022-Field-Trips/Monuments-At-Night-April-2022 \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2020-2021-Field-Trips/DC-Monuments-Sep-2020/ \n\n\n\nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2014-2015-Field-Trips/DC-at-Night/

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Washington DC’s National Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:NVPS February 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\nWashington DC’s National Cathedral is a great destination at any time of year.  The building’s Gothic revival architecture and nearby garden offer a variety of subjects.  On a sunny morning in the Winter\, when the sun is low in the sky\, the cathedral’s nave and arcade light up in a dazzling array of colors.  The South arcade will be the most brilliant in the early morning.  The North arcade doesn’t get as much light\, but the other sides more than make up for that.  You will also find the rose windows light up over the North\, South\, and West entrances.  The light shining through the stained glass windows lasts well into the early afternoon and is constantly moving. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet on a sunny Saturday morning to tour the facility.  After paying our admission\, we’ll explore the nave\, high altar\, and Southern arcade where most of the light will shine.  Our group will hunt down compositions for a few hours and then take a break at the Open City at the National Cathedral cafe (https://www.opencitycathedraldc.com/).  Inside\, we can relax and enjoy a warm beverage or snack as we chat and share what we’ve  witnessed.  (Be sure to keep your ticket stub for re-entry.) \n\n\n\nAs this is a working church\, please be respectful to others who may be there on business. Shy your camera away from parishioners to respect their privacy. Sometimes\, the cathedral offers a noontime service. If there is a 30-45 minute service and you are in the nave\, you may be asked to stop taking pictures.  This is normal. Try exploring the crypt downstairs. Take the elevator up to explore the South and North towers.  Explore the architecture outside\, or have a beverage or snack at the cafe. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGeneral Admission tickets cost $15 if purchased in advance and $18 if purchased onsite. SUMMARY:Field Trip: U.S. Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:NVPS January 2025 Field Trip \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn January\, NVPS will visit the tropical conditions inside the U.S. Botanical Garden located at the foot of Capital Hill on Independence Ave.  Exhibits at the Garden range from roses to orchids\, the rain forest of the Mid-Atlantic\, endangered plants and the latest in home gardening. The indoor galleries display flora of the jungle\, desert and primeval settings. This diversity of form and color will provide outstanding photographic opportunities.  Admission is free. \n\n\n\nThe Botanical Garden has a photographic policy which prohibits the use of tripods unless you have a permit.  There are a limited number of tripod permits available.  If you plan to use one\, you must get prior approval by contacting Victoria Gesell at victoria.gesell@aoc.gov.  Permit reservations must be requested at least one week in advance.  Permits on the day of our trip may not be available\, but check with the visitor’s desk for approval. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.usbg.gov/visit/photography-and-art-policy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Garden entrance at the opening time of 9:45 AM for a short meet and greet before the Garden opens at 10am.  We’ll take images of the plants and scenery inside the Garden for a couple of hours and then take a break.  Across the street at the Smithsonian American Indian Museum is the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe.  We’ll meet there at 12:30pm for some coffee and snacks. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n• Bring your favorite close up or macro lens.  A 24-70mm will also be useful for indoor shots.  Be mindful that the Garden is a popular destination in the Winter so bring your patience as well.   \n\n\n\n• The Garden maintains high humidity in some areas and mists the plants with water.  This leaves the plants wet and shiny.  You can cut the shine and pop the colors if you remember to bring your polarizer. \n\n\n\n• Be mindful when transitioning between exhibits.  Bring your microfiber cloth or official NVPS spud to help keep your lens free of fog. \n\n\n\n• Use of a tripod requires a permit.  See above. \n\n\n\nWhen:  Saturday\, January 25\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm  \n\n\n\nSunday\, January 26\, 2024 from 9:45am – 12:30pm (in case of bad weather) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet at 9:45am outside the Garden’s entrance facing The Mall / Maryland Avenue SW.   \n\n\n\nThe US Botanic Garden does not have any official parking available.  Parking on Maryland Avenue SW is restricted\, especially if Congress is in session.  You will find metered street parking in the area\, including across Independence Ave.  Metro is great alternative.  The Orange\, Blue\, and Silver lines will all take you to Federal Center SW which is a two block walk on Third Street NW\, South of the Garden. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Fireworks & Old Town at Night
DESCRIPTION:Want to enjoy shooting fireworks without fighting crowds or heat?  This field trip will give you that opportunity.  Every Saturday through the end of the year there is a fireworks show at National Harbor.  The show\, which begins at 5:30 p.m.\, lasts 5-10 minutes\, and will give all levels of fireworks photographers a chance to get shots of the fireworks with the Capital Wheel and National Harbor in the background. We will photograph the fireworks from across the river at Jones Point Park.  After the show is over we will drive a mile up the road and meet at the northwest corner of King and S. Fairfax Streets\, where we’ll start our walk to photograph Old Town at night\, which will be decked out for the holidays.  \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, December 14 from 5:15 – 8:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, December 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. (without the fireworks\, meet in Old Town) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nJones Point Park \n\n\n\nJones Point Drive\, Alexandria\, VA \n\n\n\n(free parking: park as close to the water as possible; we will meet at the fishing pier visible from path underneath the Wilson Bridge next to the water’s edge) \n\n\n\nOld Town Alexandria \n\n\n\n(park at the Market Square garage at 108 N. Fairfax St. – $5 weekend flat fee – and walk out to the corner of King and S. Fairfax Streets; we will meet there) \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nFor the fireworks\, a 24-70mm or a 28-300 or similar lens will work well.  (No wide angle is needed given the distance we will be from the fireworks). Either will also work for the Old Town shots unless you want to shoot handheld\, in which case you should bring a prime with good glass. Tripods are necessary for the fireworks and encouraged for Old Town.

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Great Falls MD (South End)
DESCRIPTION:Great Falls is a DMV treasure and a favorite place for landscape photography. In November we will photograph the Potomac River and C&O Canal on the southeast end of the Maryland side of Great Falls.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will park in the (free) parking lots across from The Old Angler’s Inn and head over the Angler’s Footbridge and down to the shore of the Potomac River\, which at that point provides a beautiful wide view of the river and the shores beyond it. We will then walk northwest along the C&O Canal and take advantage of the landscape and wildlife photo ops that the canal provides.  We will make our way back toward the parking lot on the same path. For those who would like to get something to eat afterwards\, we will meet at Market on the Boulevard\, a deli 3.6 miles down the road from the parking lot.  \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday November 16 from 8 -11 a.m. (post-trip gathering at 11:15 a.m.) \n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, November 17 from 8-11 a.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nGreat Falls National Park \n\n\n\nStart at parking lot across from Old Angler’s Inn (10801 Macarthur Blvd\, Potomac\, MD) \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\nA walkaround or landscape lens will work well. A wide angle lens (camera or phone) would be nice for river and footbridge shots. If you would also like to photograph birds on the canal\, you can bring a longer lens\, although the birds will be relatively close.     \n\n\n\nParking is free and there is no admission fee at this end of the park. There is an upper and lower parking lot across from Old Angler’s Inn\, and restrooms at the lower lot. We will meet by the restrooms.  \n\n\n\nThe walk down to canal and river is moderately steep and the paths are not paved\, so hiking footwear is recommended. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2024-2025 \n\n\n\nPhotographs courtesy of Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trip: The Old Town Farmers' Market

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  The Montgomery County Fair

SUMMARY:Field Trip:  Green Springs Gardens

DESCRIPTION:This event was so much fun last year that we’re doing it again!  Please join us in the beautiful Virginia countryside for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.  Established in 1853\, it is the oldest horse show in America. There are multiple areas of competition with beautiful horses and riders of all ages. In addition to the main attraction there are artisans and other vendors and great people-watching. And on Sunday there will be a car show with antique cars and muscle cars.  \n\n\n\nThere is pretty much something for everyone to photograph.  Food is available and there are outdoor tables at which to enjoy it. SUMMARY:Field Trip - Fredericksburg
DESCRIPTION:Fredericksburg will be offering a wide variety of photographic opportunities on the day our visit.  We’ll start our trip with Cars and Coffee held at the Gari Melchers museum.  This is a free monthly event held on the second Saturday of each month between 8am and 10am where members of the community drive in and display their antique cars.  Admission to the Gari Melchers museum costs $12\, but you may find more subjects around the nearby grounds.  Stay as long as you like\, but consider joining us at our next stop. \n\n\n\nEven if cars aren’t your thing\, everyone is welcome to meet up a short drive away at Chatham Manor.  The Georgian-style mansion stands overlooking the Rappahannock River and the city of Fredericksburg. Even though the interior of the mansion is undergoing renovations\, the grounds of the former Union headquarters and field hospital offers today’s photographers plenty of colonial style gardens and exhibits. \n\n\n\nAs lunch approaches and if there is interest\, we can meetup in Old Town Fredericksburg for a bite to eat before heading home.  When visiting downtown\, you will find colorful storefronts and other historical hot spots including the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop\, the Rising Sun Tavern\, and the Mary Washington House and Gardens.  Each of these museums costs $10 to enter ($8 senior/military) individually or for $24 you can visit all of them.  Feel free to explore these resources on your own. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n* This field trip should offer lots of opportunities to capture subjects with a typical mid-range lens.  Bring a longer lens if you want to capture details in people or landscapes.  A macro lens may also be particularly useful in the gardens at Chatham Manor.* Flash\, tripods\, and monopods are permitted outdoors provided they stay out of the garden beds and do not present a danger to others.* Most or our walking will involve flat gravel and paved paths.  Wear comfortable walking shoes.* Restrooms are available starting at 9am in the Chatham Manor’s Visitor Center.* Parking in downtown Fredericksburg should cost no more than $8 if you decide to go. \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, May 11\, 2024 from 8:30am – 11:30am(Rain date: Sunday\, May 12\, 2024 from 8:30am – 11:30am) \n\n\n\nWhere:We’ll meet at 8:30am outside the Visitor’s Center lot at Gari Melchers Home and Studio.  You can access the facility from Washington St. which intersects with the Southbound lanes of Warrenton Rd (US Rt.17 Business). \n\n\n\nDirections:Take 95-South to exit 133A\, US Route-17 Business / Warrenton Rd. SUMMARY:Field Trip - Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

The Dyke Marsh trail\, which begins at Belle Haven Park\, is an out-and-back trail through woodland with water on one or both sides and views of the Potomac River and sailboats moored at the adjacent Belle Haven Marina.  There is an eagles’ nest and bald eagles can often be seen flying between it and various trees or snags along the trail.  Waterfowl and songbirds are often seen\, and foxes and barred owls have been seen there on occasion.  For those who want to get there early\, sunrise can be seen and is often reflected in the water along both of the small sandy beaches on the left/east side of the trail. SUMMARY:Field Trips - National Gallery of Art
DESCRIPTION:The National Gallery of Art provides a wonderful backdrop for capturing some unique images.  Let’s get inspired from our visit where we’ll immerse ourselves in over 150\,000 pieces of art while making some of our own. Though this field trip is not guaranteed to make you famous from the art you create\, it is guaranteed to entertain you on what might otherwise be a boring winter day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBesides the art exhibits\, you will find lots of interesting subjects including architecture\, lines\, colors\, shapes\, and street photo ops of people admiring the art in the East Building. Unlike the modern architecture of the East Building\, the West Building’s neoclassical architecture provides a more traditional layout including two garden courts\, a rotunda\, and expansive hallways connecting them. While some museums are extremely difficult to work in\, the National Gallery of Art offers a lot more space to spread out. That openness should make it easier to compose images to tell your story without annoying distractions. \n\n\n\nIf the weather is comfortably cool or the sun is just too nice to ignore\, consider a visit to the Sculpture Garden which lies further West of the West Building. The outdoor exhibit opens at 11am\, and in the winter\, the Smithsonian drains the fountain in the center and converts it to an ice rink (weather permitting). Also outside and between the East and West Buildings you will find a cobblestone plaza with pyramidal skylights and a sunken fountain.  \n\n\n\nMore information about the gallery’s current exhibits is available on their website:   \n\n\n\nhttps://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/current.html

SUMMARY:Field Trips:  Cyclocross
DESCRIPTION:Do you like action photography?  Have you wanted to try outdoor sports photography?  Would you like to have fun in the process?  In December we’re going to a free local cyclocross event known as the Capital ‘Cross Classic where you’ll have the opportunity to photograph cyclists up close and personal as they race on pavement\, on grass\, up and down hills and even carry their bikes over hurdles!  While this is a sporting event\, it is high-energy and very spirited: some riders wear costumes\, food and drink is handed out to the riders and some years there is live music. There is also a lot of cheering. It takes place in Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.  This is an all-day event (usually 8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) but we will go to the afternoon races\, which culminate in the exciting elite men’s race at 3:00 p.m. The event is held rain or shine (or snow) and if it rains or has recently rained the course and riders get muddy\, making for dramatic photos.    \n\n\n\nWhen:Sunday\, Dec. 3 from 12:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.   \n\n\n\nThere is no rain date for this event since it will take place in the event of inclement weather.   \n\n\n\nEquipment and Notes: \n\n\n\n\nBoth short and long lenses have a place when shooting cyclocross\, so a walk-around lens with good range (e.g. 24-120 or 28-300) is the easiest lens to take.  However\, since the action is fast\, better glass will make for better images\, so a combination 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 would also work well.  Flash is often used to freeze the action and does not disturb the riders.  We suggest leaving tripods and monopods at home since there is a lot of walking the course\, some walking in tight spaces and moving around to get the right angle.\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those who can’t or don’t want to walk up hills or on uneven surfaces\, there is a flat area of the course that will also have good photo ops\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is free parking in the lot for the park and there is good turnover in spaces since some riders leave after their early races and others come in the afternoon for their later races. \n\n\n\n\n\nThere are restrooms at the park and there are usually one or two food trucks there for this event\n\n\n\n\n\nFeel free to go earlier and meet us at 12:15 p.m.  Races usually start at 8:00 a.m. and there is usually a race for kids under 9 years old at noon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe race schedule for this year has not yet come out but is expected to be the same as in years past.  If there are any changes in the schedule and therefore a change in the field trip time we will notify you well before the field trip\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nLake Fairfax Park \n\n\n\n1400 Lake Fairfax Drive \n\n\n\nReston\, VA \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 12:15 p.m. in front of the park office (which will be closed)\, which is the larger of the two structures in the park and located between the parking lot and the grassy part of the course.  \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us!Rena Schild and Steven GlintzField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024

DESCRIPTION:Photo by Josh Taylor\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening and sunset at the Manassas Battlefield Park.  The park offers lots of photographic opportunities that are scattered around the 5000 acre park.  We recommend you beginning your tour at one of the several parking lots accessible from Route 29 which runs through the park.  Start at either end of the park. DESCRIPTION:DC\, Jefferson Memorial\n\n\n\nThe nearest metro stop\, Smithsonian (blue line)\, is a 1 mile hike. \n\n\n\nThe Tidal Basin is more than a Mecca for spring time photographers.  Join us as we explore the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and cherry trees of the Tidal Basin as they strut their golden yellow\, orange\, and red fall foliage.  Stay a little longer and take a walk through the nearby Franklin D. Roosevelt and Martin Luther King memorials for more compositions.  The FDR memorial features sculptures depicting various scenes from the Great Depression and the MLK memorial features a massive granite figure of the man himself full of details.  Paths between these memorials are lined with more cherry trees so the canopy of colors should be vibrant.Sunrise is at 7:31am EDTSunset is 6:12pm EDTEquipment:* Bring any lens that helps your creativity.  There will be lots of compositions for lenses in the range 24-70mm and 70-200mm.  You may even find a use for a macro lens depending on your ambitions.* Remember to bring a polarizer and consider packing a graduated ND filter if you want to get a sunrise shot of the Thomas Jefferson memorial.  An ND filter would be a must if you want to eliminate other tourists from your images.  You probably won’t need a flash.* Tripods are are prohibited inside the Thomas Jefferson Memorial\, but you can use them with care outside.* Weather should be temperate\, but it might be chilly in the early morning.  We’ll hope for fog\, clear horizons\, high pressure clouds\, and anything else that will make our trip memorable.* The Thomas Jefferson memorial has a public bathroom nearby.  The FDR memorial also has public bathrooms at either end.  Park benches dot the path along the Tidal Basin.When:Saturday\, October 28\, 2023 from 7:00am to 10:00amSunday\, October 29\, 2023 from 7:00am to 10:00am (Rain Date)Where:Our group will meet outside the front of the Thomas Jefferson memorial at the base of the stairs.  We’ll have our customary socializing and determine if weather permits a sunrise shot.  We’ll make any additional planning during this meeting.Directions:Ohio Drive SW – approach is recommended from the Arlington Memorial Bridge.  Keep right as you enter the district and take the second right.  Cross the intersection with Independence Ave SW\, drive until you come upon the baseball diamonds on your left\, and begin your hunt for a parking spot.Parking Lot A – if you do not find any spots on Ohio Dr SW or you simply want to park closer to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial\, parking lot A is located off Ohio Dr. just past the 395 overpass.  If the lot is full try lot B or C. DESCRIPTION:NVPS August 2023 Field Trip \n\n\n\nJoin us at the Montgomery County Fair for a weekday field trip.  The fair is a lot of fun as it challenges the creativity and eye of the photographer.  There’s lots to photograph at the agriculture fair\, however\, our group this year will be focusing on the midway and rides after dark. \n\n\n\nIf you have the time\, spending the late afternoon strolling around the Upper Grounds and the Old MacDonald’s Barn (https://mcagfair.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023-Fair-Map-Letter-FINAL.pdf) can be rewarding.  You’ll find a photography exhibit\, old time agriculture machinery and general store\, flower and garden displays\, and a variety of demonstrations including chain saw sculpting.  You’ll also find the raptor tent where the local rescue organization will put on display several hawks and owls.  The racing pigs show will also be returning this year.  It always seems to bring out a smile and a few memorable images. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur group will meet just inside the main entrance about an hour before sunset.  After our usual socializing and planning\, we’ll split up and begin the hunt on the midway.  We’ll find carnival games\, concessions\, prizes\, and the colorful glitz that surrounds them.  We’ll also find fair attendees gorging on corn dogs\, cotton candy\, and popcorn\, playing games\, and enjoying the thrills of the rides.  The Grandstand will also be showing monster trucks at their show starting at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nTripods are essential for after dark photography.  Find spots that are not heavy in pedestrian traffic to avoid patrons tripping over your gear.\n\n\n\nWide angle lenses (24-70mm) will work great\, but you will also want to bring something with just a little extra reach (70-200mm) for longer range candid photography.\n\n\n\nWear comfortable walking shoes.\n\n\n\nIf you plan to attend the agriculture fair\, be sure to remember the sunscreen and a hat.\n\n\n\nBring extra cash for drinks and snacks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 17\, 2023 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain date) \n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nWe’ll meetup at 7pm just past the main gate and security check.  You’ll find our group hanging out next to the first concession stand straight ahead. \n\n\n\nParking and tickets: \n\n\n\nOnsite parking is $15 per car.  There should be plenty of parking\, but anticipate some heavy traffic.  Car-pooling is a good option. \n\n\n\nFree parking with shuttle bus is also available from the Odendhal Ave parking lot at Lakeforest Mall. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 online\, $15 at the gate. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us! \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2023-2024 \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz

SUMMARY:Field Trips: National Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take it slow as we tour the The United States National Arboretum for our August field trip.  This 446 acre park is impossible to cover in a single visit\, but it always has something to see if you slow down.  The park has landscapes\, wild flowers\, gardens\, museums\, and more.  You can walk the park\, hop from trail to trail in your car\, or stalk the scenery as you cruise the many winding roads of the park all from the comfort of your air conditioned car. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start our tour at the visitor’s center.  Ignoring the obvious signs of renovation and construction occurring around the building at this time\, the pond and nearby gardens across the street will offer plenty of opportunities for more intimate subjects.  Working South the landscape begins to open with unique framing and landscape opportunities.  You’ll have the option of taking the paved road along Ellipse Rd NE (East of the Columns) or the dirt path through the field to the Capitol Columns.  Both paths offer different compositions with either fields of grass or leading lines in the foreground.  We’ll stay and study the columns for more shots before returning to the visitor’s center.   \n\n\n\nWhen 10am approaches\, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum opens for more intimate views.  You can also return to your car and drive South\, past the Columns\, to the Fern Valley parking lot.  The Fern Valley (North of the parking lot) offers year round wildflower blossoms and the nearby Youth Garden (just before the parking lot) will have butterflies fluttering about in their butterfly garden. \n\n\n\nThe park is enormous.  Going inside the visitor’s center to interview the ranger on what to see should also be considered.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEquipment: \n\n\n\n\nBring your landscape and macro lenses.  A 12-24mm\, 24-70mm\, 70-200mm\, or macro lenses can all be used depending on your creativity as you stroll the park.  \n\n\n\nNever leave home without a polarizer.  Consider packing an ND filter as well if you don’t want people in your landscapes.\n\n\n\nTripods are welcome in the park with the obvious precautions.  Keep the tripod out of the gardens and don’t block narrow passages.\n\n\n\nThe weather will be hot and humid.  Bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and comfortable hiking shoes.  Benches litter the park and provide welcome resting spots.  The visitor’s center\, which opens at 8am has restrooms.  The gift shop across the street opens at 10am and also has restrooms.  Port-a-poties are available\, but they are few scattered throughout the park.\n\n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 12\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 13\, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere: \n\n\n\nThe park will not open gates until exactly 8am.  Take your time and find a parking spot near the entrance after the gates open and we’ll wait for you at the traffic circle in front of the visitor’s center. \n\n\n\nDirections: \n\n\n\n2400 R St NE\,  \n\n\n\nWashington\, DC 20002 \n\n\n\nIf you cannot join us for this field trip\, maybe our other offering this month to the Montgomery County Fair will better suit your schedule and or desires. \n\n\n\nRena Schild and Steven Glintz \n\n\n\nField Trip Coordinators 2022-2023(If you need to contact the coordinators click on Board Contacts\, then click on the link next to field-trips.) \n\n\n\n* Photographs courtesy Steven Glintz and Rena Schild

SUMMARY:Field Trips: Upperville Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:With the exception of the American Civil War\, The Great War\, World War 2\, and the recent pandemic\, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show has been held every year under the oak trees of Grafton Farm since 1853.  Originally established to showcase and improve local breeding stock\, today’s longest running horse show in America is considerably bigger attracting over 20\,000 spectators and is one of the most prestigious in the country. \nOur June field trip will take us West on Route 50 to Upperville\, VA where on Sunday June 11\, 2023 we will attend the 170th Horses & Horsepower Car Show.  The day starts with a car show including antique roasters\, muscle cars\, and other cars that will satisfy the exotic motorist and photographer.  The car show\, however\, is only the tip of the iceberg because the afternoon events at the farms culminate in the racing horses around the grand prix track.  \nInclement weather may delay the events on the final day of the show.  With our club picnic and other events landing on the same weekend\, we do not have an alternate day scheduled.  If the weather turns sour\, we’ll send out a notice to cancel the field trip.  \nMore information about the show can be found online: \nhttps://wineandcountrylife.com/the-upperville-colt-horse-show/ https://www.upperville.com/ \nPlease be aware of the event’s photography policies. \n\n“The use of flash attachments is not permitted on horse paths\, in the paddock or during competition.”\n\nTickets: \nParking is free and so is the show.  Reserved seating is available for a price.  See https://upperville.com for more information. \nEquipment: \n\nBring a standard lens (24-70mm) as you walk about the grounds hunting for subjects.\nBring your super telephoto (300mm+) to catch the action around the grand prix. SUMMARY:Field Trips: Revolutionary War Weekend at Mt. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:It’s another British invasion.  This time it’s centered at Washington’s Mt. Vernon and it involves highly enthusiastic historical re-enactors instead of a rock band.  We’ll visit Mt. Vernon during their Revolutionary War Weekend.  This is a large event hosting hundreds of re-enactors and has become very popular.  Tickets will sell out well in advance.  \nWe’ll hope for the best possible weather as we plan to attend Saturday morning.  If you cannot secure Saturday tickets\, you may want to consider attending Sunday instead.  This is an awesome event for any history buff and photographer interested in portraits\, candids\, and historically accurate journalistic compositions.  There is so much to see and the cast are photo friendly.  \nThe schedule of events for the day is not published until the “generals” meet\, usually the morning of the event.  Camp life is demonstrated throughout the day and there is always something happening.  Use your eyes and ears to anticipate unique opportunities so you can be at the right place at the right time.  Troop inspection usually occurs around 10am in the morning and will be announced over the PA system.  Pick your side and stick with them.  In the past\, there have been two scheduled skirmishes\, one around 12pm and another around 2pm.  Skirmishes are dependent on the weather as they will be using real muskets and real gunpowder.  \nRemember\, most participants are photogenic and welcome the opportunity provided they’re not busy.  Approach with a smile and a curiosity and you may find yourself much smarter after the encounter.  The cast is very knowledgeable about their uniforms\, the unit they are a member of\, and their camp. \nWe’ll start our tour from the Ford Orientation Center (aka visitor’s center).  We’ll leave the visitor’s center and follow the path leading us towards the Continental Army encampment which is usually found on the lawn beyond the Bowling Green.  The British and Hessian camps are usually located on the back lawn (river side) behind the upper garden.  Families (yes\, actual wives and children) of the soldiers often accompany the re-enactors just like camp followers would have in the past and they even play their historical rolls as well. \nIt won’t take long for many of us to become separated\, engrossed in whatever catches our eye.  This is certainly anticipated though we encourage small groups while you tour.  We’ll wander around from tent to tent\, capture scenes and events\, and find groups of soldiers marching or otherwise preparing for the day.  \nOur groups will most likely react to events announced over the PA.  Everything is a short walk\, but you’re not going to see everything as some events overlap.  We recommend finding something and following the action for a while before moving on.  Some events like the skirmishes may require you to plan ahead and stake out a spot before the crowds overtake the venue.  Knowing the contour of the land\, a bit of luck\, and a hint about the planned skirmish will help you find the right spot. \nPlease be aware of Mt. Vernon’s code of conduct which includes their photography policy.  No flash photography indoors and tripods are prohibited despite the fact that events such as Mt. For these events\, you will be required to stand behind roped off viewing areas. For this reason\, be sure to bring a telephoto lens.  A 200mm will give you a wide shot of the “battlefield”.  You will need at least a 300mm to isolate individuals.\nAlways bring a polarizer.\nNo flash photography is permitted in the mansion or galleries.\nTripods are also prohibited. You shouldn’t need your tripod anyways. Save yourself the weight and leave it at home.\nWeather is anticipated to be warm. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the afternoon sun. DESCRIPTION:*** RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER ***  to rain date of Sunday\, April 16\, 2023\, 10am to 1pm\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is our pleasure to introduce April’s field trip to the Hillwood Estate\, Museum\, and Gardens.  This is a rare destination for our club to explore.  The estate is huge and we may not cover it all in one visit\, but we’re certain you will end the day satisfied\, already planning your next visit. \nThe former owner\, Marjorie Merriweather Post maintained an extensive collection of orchids\, so a visit to the greenhouse to see the orchids and other flowers maintained by today’s horticulturists is sure to be impressive.  Spring will be well underway and the Japanese style garden will be amazing despite the fact that the cherry blossoms will have past their prime.  The Lunar Lawn will also draw in photographers with rows of flowers lining the perimeter.  Sculptures and various other subjects will be discovered while wandering around the French Parterre and Four Seasons garden.  \nThere is so much to see outdoors you may forget about the lavishly decorated mansion and museum.  Inside you can tour the mansion’s collection of Imperial-era Russian art.  You’ll also find exotic French furniture\, tapestries\, and paintings as you wander through the rooms of the mansion.  \nOn the day of our field trip\, we’ll start with the outdoors.  After we’ve paid our admission\, we’ll break into smaller groups and spread out to the various gardens to take advantage of the soft morning light.  At or about high noon\, we’ll gather around the Merriweather Cafe for a break.  They will have indoor dining as well as a to go menu which will allow us to eat and chat outside in the warm spring weather.  The light may be a bit harsh after our break so we recommend going indoors to snoop around for subjects. \nPlease be aware of Hillwood’s photographic policy linked below.  It states that tripods may only be used in the gardens\, and flashes\, reflectors\, etc. are prohibited. \nhttps://hillwoodmuseum.org/visit/plan-your-visit/photography-policy \nTickets: \nVisiting Hillwood requires paid admission.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online (https://secure.hillwoodmuseum.org/events) or in person.  Purchasing online ahead of time offers a small discount ($1). \nAdult: $18Senior: $15Child (6-18): $6 \nEquipment: \n\nMost subjects will not be too far away so a standard lens will suit for most compositions.\nConsider bringing a macro lens to capture some unique details in either the flowers or decorations.\nDon’t forget to bring a polarizer.\nAs mentioned in the photographic policy\, tripods are only allowed in the gardens. DESCRIPTION:In January\, our club will visit the sites around the Old Post Office and Clock Tower.  This is a wonderful winter destination for urban landscape\, architecture\, and street photography. \nWe’ll begin our tour by gathering along 12th Street NW in front of the Woodrow Wilson Plaza where some may find their first shots of the morning.  Following our usual meet and greet\, we’ll move indoors to escape the cold January morning.  We’ll enter the Old Post Office using the public entrance on 12th St.  A hallway outlining the history of the building will lead us to an elevator that will take us to the top floor of the main building with a view of the renovated hotel atrium.  The exhibit continues to the clock tower elevator where we’ll go up to witness the views from on top of the third tallest building in Washington DC. \nWhen we’re done peeping at rooftops and the outdoor temperatures have warmed up\, we’ll return to the street for some external shots including views of The Capitol down Pennsylvania Ave.  We’ll also go on the hunt as we wander our way around the Woodrow Wilson Plaza picking out the nooks and crannies created by all the paths in and out. \nDepending on the outcome from our meet and greet discussions\, we may decide to visit one of the nearby restaurants for lunch.  There is also an indoor food court in the Reagan building. \nA lot of renovations have occurred since our last visit in 2008: \nhttps://nvps.smugmug.com/NVPSGallery/Field-Trips/2007-2008-Field-Trips/Oldpostoffice/ \nEquipment: \n\nStandard and wide angle lenses will work well for those who want to focus on architecture and street photography. Consider a longer lens if you want to pick out some city landscape details.\nTripods are welcome though it may be a little tight inside the clock tower.\nIt’s January in DC\, dress accordingly for outdoor exploring.
