SUMMARY:Portfolio Project: Final Portfolio Project Review with Brian Zwit
DESCRIPTION:This is it everyone! The final Portfolio Review is on May 21 and we have a special surprise for you. Local photographer and workshop leader Brian Zwit has agreed to be our reviewer\, www.brianjzwit.com. Many of you will remember the wonderful job Brian did as our reviewer for the 2016 Portfolio Project. We are lucky that he has agreed to come back this year. \nIt’s time to start wrapping up those final images and work on your presentation. Please have your digital portfolios finalized by midnight on Tuesday\, May 14\, to give Brian enough time to review them. As was stated before\, we will have a digital presentation of everyone’s work\, with the Artist Statement followed by 12 of your images\, from which Brian will make his comments. For the final review we will be going alphabetically by first name from Z to A. Be sure to put your best images in the gallery for the presentation\, starting strong and ending strong. Review your Artist Statement – is it concise and easy to read\, both in content and on the screen? \nWe’ll be putting the presentations on the back tables where we have members’ gallery so they can be viewed by everyone\, and where you can discuss your work with other members. \nThe Portfolio Project is always a wonderful showcase of the talent\, imagination and skill of the NVPS membership. We hope everyone will be there to celebrate and enjoy the presentation. \nBy the way\, the next Photo Slam will be on June 9 in DC at ‘Busboys and Poets’. This could be an excellent venue for you to show your portfolio! \nCheck out the details at http://glenechophotoworks.org/2019/04/15/photo-slam-2019- the-event/ . The winner will be part of a show at Glen Echo this year. As per the website: “Content for entries is open\, with no limitations as to theme or subject matter. Photographers working in both film- and digital-capture are encouraged to participate\, though the format of the entries must be digital. Both black-and-white and color entries are encouraged. As stated above\, entrants are strongly encouraged to organize their portfolios according to a unified theme or vision.” \nThe submission deadline for the Photo Slam is June 5 and the event will be on June 9. \nWhat a timely event for your work! \nFinally\, would you be interested in learning about the Portfolio Project and co-chairing with Ginger for the next club year? Please let Stan or Ginger know if you are interested.

SUMMARY:Education & Training: "Anonymous Critique" with Willa Friedman and Ron Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Take this opportunity to get feedback on your images. Submit images you are experimenting on with new software; images that need just a little help\, and/or images you may consider for a competition. The sole purpose of anonymous critique is to help you grow as a photographer.  You will not be identified unless you choose to make comments or ask questions about your images. \nThe firm deadline for image submission is 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 2\, to allow time for our computer team to anonymize the images and for Willa and Ron to review them before the April 9 meeting.   \nYou can submit up to three images.  Please prioritize them by naming them as follows: number_title\, where number is 1\, 2\, or 3\, followed by an underscore and anything you’d like for a title. For example\, “1_Red House on the Prairie.” Putting the number first will allow us to sort the images so that at least one image from every photographer is critiqued.  Beyond that\, Willa and Ron will critique as many images as time allows. \nPlease submit your images to critique@nvps.org\, sized the same as for competition:  jpeg images with a maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high (vertical shots have the same 1050 pixel height requirement)\, sRGB workspace. We recommend your images be set to 127 pixels per inch (PPI\, sometimes called dots per inch or DPI) or less (e.g.\, 127\, 96 or 72 PPI) for best results with our projector.  If you send the images from Mac mail\, please select the “actual size” option from the “image size” menu in the upper right corner. \nQuestions?  Please contact the Education and Training Coordinator\, Eva Lanyi\, at education@nvps.org.

SUMMARY:Portfolio Project: Interim Review with Kevin Egan & Ginger Werz-Petricka
DESCRIPTION:On February 12\, 2019\, three of NVPS’s most experienced photographers (Ginger Werz-Petricka\, Kevin Egan\, and Kathryn Mohrman) will lead the initial review of portfolios for NVPS members who are participating in the Portfolio Project this year.   Whether you have a portfolio for review or not\, it will be a fun and interesting learning experience.  Although the reviewers may comment on individual images\, the Portfolio Project emphasizes a body of work and how the individual images work together as a cohesive whole. Our reviewers will also provide their thoughts about the Artist Statement that begins each portfolio\, giving feedback on how it correlates with the actual portfolio.  They will also look for continuity\, repetition\, and the order of images\, and give helpful suggestions. \nPortfolio Project participants will use this coming Tuesday’s feedback to hone their work and ready it for the final review on May 21\, 2019. \nPortfolios are an important way for photographers to display their artistic vision and develop different projects for bodies of work.  Seeing the various portfolios and hearing the reviewers’ comments will hopefully give everyone ideas for portfolios of their own. \nGinger Werz-Petricka

SUMMARY:Education & Training: "Macro Photography" with Dennis Govoni
DESCRIPTION:“On December 11\, Dennis Govoni will talk about tools and techniques of doing macro photography.  Included in the presentation is how to do focus stacking and what subjects are most suited.  What equipment and software are most useful?   How is focus stacking done?  Dennis will show how best to capture macro images that can later be focus stacked to make them sharp throughout the scene. An actual demo will be done showing the steps using Adobe Photoshop.” \nBio\n“Dennis began his photographic journey in 1964 while an undergraduate at Marietta College in Ohio. \nAfter graduate school\, he took a professorship at Virginia Wesleyan College and during a two week period in January\, known as the “January Term”\, he often offered various courses in photography starting with black and white and eventually moving towards color photography using the then innovative technology known as the “Cibachrome Method”\, a direct positive-to-positive color print approach. \nNow retired for 7 years\, Dennis continues to spend time enjoying photography. His approach is to try and look for interesting details in a subject (influenced by his biology and botany background) and the role of light quality in revealing  those details. While he started out doing macro photography\, he also enjoys wildlife and landscape\, too. \nWhile not a professional by any means\, his work has appeared in a children’s book series on nature and in publications such as Photography Week. He is also an active Getty Image contributor where his images have been used by the BBC\, The Weather Channel\, Bank of America and other enterprises. He has also taught in George Mason’s OLLI Program (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) as the lead for their “The Art of Photography” Series.  \nDennis has been a member of NVPS for about eight years and has been involved with Nature Visions for the last four years. \nHis photos can be found at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dngovoni/.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Education & Training: "The Art of Photographic Composition" with Mike Whalen
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Photographic Composition   \nBy Mike Whalen \nGood composition is another piece of the puzzle in creating stronger\, more pleasing images. Most photos are composed of multiple elements and sub-elements that are framed together. How we choose to include and visually position these elements will contribute to the success or failure of the final image. This presentation will provide guidelines to improve your compositions. \nAspects of photography can be comparable to other art forms. For example\, music can have a distinct melody\, harmony\, background singers\, etc. All these individual parts work together to produce a song that is greater than the sum of its parts. Such is true with photographs. We typically have a main subject or focal point\, foreground\, background\, supporting elements. A good photographer will include the pieces that work together to enhance the subject and eliminate the distracting or conflicting elements.  Sometimes we just get lucky\, but generally\, a good image needs to be thoughtfully “composed” right before we release the shutter. \nThis presentation will include discussions and examples of:   \n\nSubject placement\nColor\, contrast and texture\nLines: leading and S-curves\nBackgrounds considerations\nBalancing subject with other sub-elements\nFraming (frame within a frame)\nCreating depth perspective on a 2D image\nLeaving room during framing\nSimplicity versus complexity\nCropping in post\n\nReferences \nWeb links: \n20 Composition Techniques That Will Improve Your Photos: \nhttps://petapixel.com/2016/09/14/20-composition-techniques-will-improve-photos/ \nVisual Flow: Mastering the Art of Composition\, with Ian Plant: \nhttps://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/videos/photography/visual-flow-mastering-the-art-of-composition-with-ian-plant \n11 Thoughts: An Introduction to Photographic Composition: \nhttps://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/11-thoughts-introduction-photographic-composition \nBooks \nMaster Composition Guide for Digital Photographers Paperback – Ernst Wildi \nThe Photographer’s Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos – Michael Freeman \nLearning to See Creatively – Bryan Peterson \nPhotography and the Art of Seeing – Freeman Patterson \nBIO of Mike Whalen \nAs a teen\, Mike learned a few photo basics from his father\, a photographer and artist. He dabbled with film camera in the 80’s and 90’s\, and after that with a few digital point-and-shoots.  However\, it wasn’t until 2006\, when he purchased a basic Canon DSLR\, that he began to see the potential of this “new” digital technology. \nAfter a chance meeting with member\, Willa Friedman\, in 2008\, where he learned about NVPS\, he joined in 2009. He has served on the board from 2010 to the present and served as president in 2013. In 2018 he was awarded the distinguished service award.  From participating in many NVPS competitions\, he received numerous annual awards including\, “Photographer-of-the-Year”\, “Color-Print-of-the-Year” and “Image-of-the-Year” at various times. In recent years\, he also scored three cover shots on the Spring editions of Washington Gardener Magazine and in 2016\, he won Nature Visions “People’s Choice” award. Mike also donates his time regularly\, as a pet photographer for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and\, volunteers as a photographer for charitable organization’s annual DC events such as: The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and The Epilepsy Foundation of America. \n          \n  \n

The B & H demonstrator tapes the image to the backboard; we don’t do that for a number of reasons. There are also several mat cutters that have variations but in the end we all get the same result.\n\nAfter our brief demonstration\, there will be several workstations around the room where several experienced members will demonstrate how they cut mat using their equipment.   \n\nThis is a hands-on session\, so bring a photo\, not larger than 8.5 x11 to mat.  We will have mat board and other materials required to practice on.\n\nIf you have a mat cutter\, bring it to follow along.\n\nHere are are some documents (2 Word and 1 Excel) Resource for you to download.  Click on the link and then right-click (Mac: CTL+Click)  to select Save Link As to save to your hard drive:\n\nmatting Resources\n\nMake Mattes\n\nDouble Mats_measuring & cutting
